This project adapts a historic masonry structure within the heart of Oaxaca’s city center into a new site for learning and urban living. The design iden fies original aspects of the building needing to be preserved, and explores how these characteris cs best drive a contemporary interven on. We iden fy the courtyards as the building’s heart, and emphasize the unique feel and func on of each. The project thus centers around three unique experiences; an in mate wooden courtyard, an expansive courtyard that plays off the sound and cooling effect of water, and finally, a natural “living” courtyard that emphasizes communal outdoor living typical to Oaxaca. By incorpora ng lessons from the exisis ng infrastructure, the project respec ully nests a contemprary interven on within the historic urban city center. Team Project: Ana Lozano, Jessi Kulow, Josh Lamden 5

MANIPULATING THE ARCHETYPE Design Excellence Nomina on. Spring 2014

17

18

This project involved analyzing and manipulating the archetypal gable house to achieve a modest, picturesque addition to a prominent residence designed by architect Steven Ehrlich in the hills of west Los Angeles. By playing off the archetypal house the addition invokes a sense of “home” while also tying into the existing structure’s Japanese inspiration through its earthy materiality and focus on the outdoors.

This design build required each team to design a wall using a finite number of bricks and a build me of under three hours. Our team’s wall won first in show in the class and was awarded first place in the state of Texas by the Texas Masonry Council. MODULair combines aordable modular construc on with passive solar strategies to create a low impact, o-grid lifestyle. Blurring the dis nc on between the interior and exterior encourages movement from room to room over the course of the day. Though developed for a site in Aus n, TX, this design can be seamlessly transplanted to new sites across humid sub-tropical or temperate environments. CULINARY INSTITUTE: RIGOR CREATIVITY

BURRO CHEESE KITCHEN:

CRESTVIEW T.O.D.:

SIMPLICITY BRAND

DESTINATION MOVEMENT

The proposed culinary school and open park adapts Aus n food truck Burro Cheese Kitchen’s philosophy of eleva ng the most basic of foods, the grilled cheese sandwich (bread + cheese) into something more. The school curriculum is divided into five segments (raw, meat, sauces, soups, & dairy), where students learn basic techniques and then are expected to crea vely enhance even the simplest of daily recipes. Furthermore, Burro’s philosophy of transparency within the food making process inspires both literal and phenomenal transparencies throughout the building and outdoors. The result: a common ground to enjoy food and ac vity within a developing district in northern Aus n. Team project: Joshua Lamden & Ko Kuwabara

MONTANA CABIN DEVELOPMENT Lake l Flato Architects. Summer/Fall 2015

53

During my internship at Lake Flato from June 2015-December 2015 I worked primarily on a small development of cabins in Big Sky, Montana. I had the unique opportunity of being involved from the very beginning of the project through the preliminary set of construc on documents. Star ng with marke ng, scheduling, and site analysis in June, to conceptual and final drawings and models throughout the fall, I was instrinsically involved throughout all phases of the design process and was also in constant communica on with the project’s consultants. This unique lake front, ski in/ski out development is slated to begin construc on during the spring/summer of 2016. Project Team: Bob Harris, Ma Wallace, Chris Currie, Josh Lamden
