An E x c i t i n g We e k e n d … At One Of The America’s Most Beautiful Locat ions Welcome to the 8th annual Bay Harbor Concours Festival and Bay Harbor’s Northern Michigan Dream Cruise! I look forward to what I know will be an exciting weekend, at one of the America’s most beautiful locations, the Village at Bay Harbor. I wish to thank David V. Johnson, Chairman of Bay Harbor Company, who has been a gracious host this year, as well as all previous years. Proceeds from the Bay Harbor Concours Festival will benefit the Bay Harbor Foundation, a charitable, nonprofit organization that provides grants to other non-profit organizations who provide programs in the arts, education, the environment, and health and human services. We are excited about the first annual Bay Harbor Northern Michigan Dream Cruise component of the Festival, which has been embraced by the local community, from both a sponsorship and participation standpoint. This fun-filled event is free and open to the public, offering a variety of experiences including the 50s and 60s themed cruise night on Friday. We hope that you will walk the streets and visit the shops and restaurants of Bay Harbor while you are here. As with all Bay Harbor events we strive for great social interaction. The Bay Harbor Concours Festival will provide just that. There will be opportunities for all to see vintage as well as future classic, world-class vehicles and boats. Driving and boating tours will afford participants the opportunity to see the spectacular beauty of Northern Michigan. I wish to thank the many organizations that have stepped forward in sponsorship roles with the show, such as the Bay Harbor Company, The Suburban Group, Meade Lexus, ABC TV 29 & 8, Auto Europe Inc.,

S t a r t Yo u r E n g i n e s f o r S u m m e r F u n ! Bay Harbor Concours Festival, marking its eighth season, has again gathered an exceptional collection of historic vehicles and boats. We are thrilled that all of northern Michigan can participate in not only our traditional, exciting classic car and boat show but that this year brings Bay Harbor’s 1st Annual Northern Michigan Dream Cruise — hot rods, muscle cars and tremendous family fun. Bay Harbor Concours Chairman Doug Turnbull, the Concours Board of Directors and Bay Harbor staff are to be commended for all their efforts to produce this great car and boat show at Bay Harbor. They deserve our thanks for their tireless efforts to expand and improve the event, as well as increase its visibility and prestige with both collectors and the general public. While those who attend benefit from this splendid show and its social activities, the greater community will benefit far more. Funds generated for the Bay Harbor Foundation will provide grants to many nonprofit organizations in the greater northern Michigan area to support the environment and health and human services and programs. Our community of owners, merchants, management and staff, invite you to enjoy all Bay Harbor has to offer — the serene beauty of its public nature trails, the pristine waters of Bay Harbor Lake and the priceless sunsets over Lake Michigan to the bustle of our shops and restaurants. Our reputation as a premier destination spot for boaters was acclaimed by MotorBoating magazine when we were named as one of the Top Ten Ports in North America in their March, 2006 edition. The Bay Harbor Equestrian Club was equally honored when it was named as one of the four best equestrian communities in the United States in the winter edition of Everything for Horse and Rider magazine. We hope your experiences find a special place in your heart, and bring you back to Bay Harbor again and again. Sincerely,
David V. Johnson Chairman Victor International Corporation Bay Harbor Company

The Rich & Famous — Little Traverse Bay Region “…The Association had reached new highs in prestige. It was recognized as the most distinguished resort in the Midwest, if not the entire country. The members rested secure in the knowledge that the affairs of The Association were in the devoted hands of men whose combined talents were worth millions of dollars. Men who commanded railroads, ran huge banks and masterminded national industries.” This quote came from summer resorter, John Creecy about the condition of the Harbor Point Association of Harbor Springs, Michigan, in 1908.
Text and images contributed by Petoskey-Harbor Springs-Boyne Country Visitors Bureau. All rights reserved.
The history of the Little Traverse Bay region is alive with stories of the rich and famous who were lured to the area by their interest in yachting on Lake Michigan and pollen free air. A place where they could escape from the congestion and pollution of the industrialized cities. As Creecy noted that “they came from London, England, Hong Kong and many parts of the United States. One of the largest contingents was from the Midwest area where “the summers in pre-air conditioned days presented a great incentive for northward travel.”
and the Grand Rapids-Indiana railroad lines, many in the comfort of their own private rail car. Traveling to the north woods could only be achieved by these means. Tourism (as we know it today) was invented in Michigan by one of our early industrialists: Mr. Henry Ford. His creation of the Model N was the proto-type for the Model T which started the revolution of automobile travel by putting everyday “working class Americans” on wheels. In the 1820’s, when surveyor Henry Schoolcraft was mapping Michigan, this region was regarded as the wilderness, something to be feared and dreaded. But in just a short time these magnetic natural qualities, once feared, were discovered to have the rarest purities. The mineral waters were believed to possess great medicinal qualities and the wooded lands became alive with beauty. By the 1870’s many resorters were arriving on luxurious steamships, an example was the SS Northland whose only port-of-call on the eastern shore of Lake Michigan was Little Traverse Bay. Other summer residents arrived by rail on the Pere-Marquette Benefiting Bay Harbor Foundation
Many of the summer residents were of distinguished ancestry. They all had achieved success through their own efforts or had impressively compounded the success of their forbearers. They were endowed with the virtues of hard work and integrity plus the vision to recognize ‘ground floor’ opportunities arising from the westward movement of the American frontier. It is obvious today, to many, that the preservation of the environment of the Little Traverse Bay area is still fully embraced by these descendants of those early industrialists. 13

The Rich & Famous — Little Traverse Bay Region It is clear in the annual returning to their cottages on the Bay that the summer residents are lured by something other than the lust for glamour and excitement. As Mrs. James Davis, a sixty-year summer resident said, “It is simply marvelous to see the sense of continuity. There are so many families represented by the fourth, fifth and sixth generations. These children come back and are perfectly willing to welcome our quaint old ways. In fact, they are the first ones to protest if we try to change them.”
LITTLE TRAVERSE BAY “AT-A GLANCE”
Petoskey, Harbor Springs, Bay Harbor and Boyne City are located in northwest lower Michigan along the shores of Lake Michigan’s beautiful Little Traverse Bay. Boyne City is on the southern tip of glistening Lake Charlevoix. All areas are accessible via U.S. 131 and U.S. 31. For generations, visitors have been coming to the area to enjoy the nautical flavor of the communities. The charming Victorian atmosphere. And the spectacular natural beauty of rolling hills blanketed in hardwoods and pines as far as the eye can see. Bay Harbor stretches over five miles along Little Traverse Bay near Petoskey. The community’s centerpiece is the luxurious Inn at Bay Harbor. This is also home to the spectacular Bay Harbor Golf Club, already acclaimed by Golf Magazine and Golf Digest as one of the top sixteen public golf courses in North America.
This continuity of family ties and the maintenance of traditions from generation to generation is what has supported this unique lifestyle of the summer resorters of the Little Traverse Bay area. Even today, we feel the ‘ripple’ effect of these influences in philanthropic work to secure a ‘state of the art’ health care operation at Northern Michigan Hospital in Petoskey. One only has to look around to see the successful efforts of the Little Traverse Conservancy in protecting thousands of acres of prime land in this region. To also have the Bay View Association, the only Chautauqua community in the United States that is a National Historic Landmark, where thousands of people representing every state in the country have come annually since 1875 to spend the entire summer. The area continues to invite, welcome and lure visitors to discover for themselves what makes this region so special. Those that wish to be seen can go to Vail, Miami, Palm Springs or Hollywood and those that wish to return to a pristine area that is less complicated and where they can be anonymous tend to gravitate back to the Little Traverse Bay area—generation after generation.

Victorian charm is abundant in this corner of northwest Michigan. Visitors can see buildings that were constructed from the 1870’s through 1900’s, when the Victorian style of architecture was at its height. The buildings are original structures, restored to their former elegance. 2,800 hotel rooms; 50+ restaurants, shopping is a browser’s delight in the Village at Bay Harbor, Petoskey’s Gaslight Districts, downtown Harbor Springs and Boyne City; golfing; outdoor festivals; and year-round outdoor activities include fishing, boating, skiing & snowboarding, snowmobiling, bicycling, and hiking.
