mong the “L” words we use in fashion, looks is a biggie and likes certainly gets its share on social media. L as in local manufacturer is an industry term and the high cost of locally manufacturing clothing doesn’t always make us feel lucky . However, local manufacturing is the workhorse of sustainable fashion. Local manufacturing allows JSong to tailor make pieces for boutiques or individuals. There is no waste of labor, materials, or inventory and there is much less of a carbon foot print. It took determination and a lot of hard work to build the JSong Way Local of New York Made Program. Throughout this issue you will see fashions manufactured in New York City. It is a challenge but with love of fashion and knowledge of new technology, we will soar above all challenges. Also our JSong Way On Demand fashions are made in New York City. All styles from the local made collection can be customized. This summer we were honored to make a Way On Demand wedding dress for Sharon Downing. It was so successful that in this season’s JSong Collection, Sharon’s Lace Dress is based on that design. Please visit JSongway.com to learn more about JSong Way On Demand. Our commitment is not limited to creating the unique clothes that you love to wear. We also make sure that communications between our design team, pattern makers and seamstresses is filled with respect and love. This helps us to realize our vision of bringing joy and song to all who make or wear or encounter our clothes. This is our JSong Way to fashion and happiness. We thank our friends, customers and all our readers for all your friendship and support along our journey.

Way

Miss Jessie’s by Alice Chin

Founder and CEO of Miss Jessie’s Products, Miko Branch, Shared with Way Magazine the joy of loving what she does and the challenge of finding time for herself. Miss Jessie’s was created for multi textured hair.

Alice: How did you decide to become an entrepreneur? Miko: My dad came out of the civil rights era and having the freedom to make decisions was extremely important. He carved into our minds the importance of being entrepreneurs. As young children, my sister Titi and I saved the money from our lemonade stand and bought a classic pool for our backyard. So we saw the fruits of our labor at a very young age. Alice: What’s the most challenging part about being an entrepreneur? Miko: My sister and I didn’t go to business school. When you’re learning as you go, there are consequences when you make wrong moves. One time we made a bad decision and we completely lost our business. There was no cash reserve to tap. It was hard to deal with the loss and challenging to rebuild. Luckily, some of the hard times were stepping stones for future successes. Alice: What do you love the most about having your own business? Miko: I love being my own boss. So I’m right where I need to be in terms of occupation. I also love making the tough decisions. As an entrepreneur, the failures are not fun; but the successes are very, very fulfilling. Alice: Do you have any advice for people who want to start their own business? Miko: I recommend a good amount of research. Once you feel like you’ve gotten enough information, I encourage any entrepreneur to just go out there and do it. Trust me: you’ll learn many good things but you’ll learn some bad things. Hopefully going forward you won’t do those bad things again. Alice: In terms of the beauty world, is there anything you would like to see? Miko: I think that we’re at a positive curve in the beauty industry. The beauty standard might still be a little unattainable but we are headed in the right direction: natural beauty. When I look at today’s media, I see more women embracing their natural selves whether it be hair texture, skin color, or even unique personalities. In an age where physical alterations are common, to see natural beauty being embraced is a good sign.

Alice: What’s new at Miss Jessie’s? Miko: We’ve just launched a brand new product called Multicultural Clear which is a sister product to Multicultural Curls. Multicultural Clear is a lightweight gel without the crunch or the flakiness of typical gels. Aside from our hair products, we found that many people are interested in how we built our business. Our first book was “Miss Jessie’s - Creating a Successful Business from Scratch - Naturally”. In our second book, I will continue to share my evolution as CEO and as a female business owner. I think people want to follow the journey. Alice: Speaking of natural beauty, two of your most popular items are Curly Pudding and Jelly Soft Curls. Users say these products keep the natural curl of the hair without weighing it down. That is quite an achievement. What is the unique challenge of working with curly hair? Miko: There are so many different textures when you work with curls, kinks, and waves. The challenge is to create a product that any texture can use. The consistency and the smell of the product must be appealing. Even the name of the product should be fun. If our products work and make people feel good, we’ve done a good job. Alice: Since this issue of Way Magazine is about falling in love with yourself, what do you do to relax and take care of yourself? Miko: I’m in my mid-40s, so I see the importance of taking time for myself. I try to exercise a bit more, spend more time with friends and family, and laugh a lot more. As an entrepreneur, my life belongs to my business primarily. But I’m also a full time mom, so I take that even more seriously than my business.

Interview Way

FALL IN LOVE WITH FASHION by Edward Kwang

Recently I asked Xiao Nan Liu, our intern from the High School of Fashion Industries, about her plans after graduation. Without hesitation, she told me she wants to continue to work in fashion. I was not surprised because since arriving at JSong, I could see the change in her eyes. To many people, fashion is just an unattainable dream of beauty. But what is fashion to those who work in the industry every day? When and what made them fall in love with fashion? What do they like best about owning a fashion store? How do they spread their love of fashion to customers? In this issue, we interviewed 10 boutique owners about their passion for fashion. Below are their delightful answers stories and answers. They have different interesting backgrounds, but there is one thing they have in common: they love fashion.

Ann Taylor JoVon Fashion Elizabeth, NC I am from a family with 13 children. Even as a little child, I loved to look at beautiful clothes but we could never afford to purchase anything. After graduating from college, I spent a lot of my income on clothing. A tremendous amount! On the side of my job at New York Brooklyn Jewish Hospital, I did home shopping for friends. Home shopping eventually became my part-time job and my customers loved what I bought for them. I also got to know numerous vendors and became familiar with fashion trends. In 1990, my husband and I moved to South Carolina and started our first store. As a fashion store owner, I can place orders in the market and offer personalized service to 17

each customer. My mission is using clothes as a platform to make my customers look fabulous and feel confident. Princess Jerkins The Brownstone New York City, NY When I was 11, I loved to draw and sketch with crayons. I was inspired by the Diana Ross movie: “Mahogany”. I pictured myself as Diana in the movie: a girl from Chicago’s South Side who works days as a secretary in a Loop department store; studies fashion art in night school; and dreams of becoming a top fashion designer: “Do you know where you’re going to?” In the past 30 years, I have seen customers become close friends and developed fantastic relationships with vendors like JSong. Everyday when I open the door and greet my customers, I can’t wait to help them to select from my beautiful collections. The role of fashion store owner allows me to be surrounded by beautiful people and to work with them. Nomzamo Iyanu Nomzamo’s Fashion Baton Rouge, LA Since I was 8 years old, I looked up to my Grandpa who owned a cafe. His cafe featured Blue Bon Music on Saturday afternoons and Zydeco on Sunday. People who came to the cafe liked to dress up and have fun. It was a joy to see. Now, after having my store for 31 years, I am still enthusiastic and love what I do. My store is full of fun and I have a team of fun people. My job is to make customers happy and to work closely with vendors like JSong. By listening to my customers, I know just what they like to wear for special occasions like those weekends at Grandpa’s cafe.

Debra Williams D-Style of Memphis Memphis, TN In my early 20’s, I began to pay attention to beautiful clothing. This all started from watching ladies going to church. Mostly I saw our church’s First Ladies wearing beautiful dresses with spectacular jewelry. I was inspired. I love to dress myself and my customers simultaneously, especially when we are from different backgrounds. Very often, my customers love to have what I wear so I get to introduce them to something new. Through beautiful clothes, I get to know my customers and build trust between us. Sondro Hechavarria Sondro’s Boutique Ft. Lauderdale, FL I have been around fashion all of my life but I fell in love with fashion when I was in high school. I am from New York City and I was a model and also taught at the Barbizon Modeling and Acting Center. In 1971, I moved to Florida and opened my first s tore. I w ork c losely w ith my customers, coordinating them from head to toe with accessories. I pass along my fashion ideas and love of fashion to my customers who have also become my friends. I give them a positive approach to looking good and feeling good. I consequently inspire them to have fashion statements of their own. Mary Dell Mary Dell Designer Fashion Killeen, TX Since I was a little girl, I liked to dress myself when I went to Sunday school. I loved the way the garments looked and I liked learning how to dress. All these things helped me develop into a fashionable young lady. As a store owner, I help my customers to find new trends. I introduce them to things they have never seen and I love to see them transform from ordinary to elegance. I will never sell my customers, who are my friends as well, something that does not look good. Every item must be flattering. Myrtha Bourdeau Dilly D’alley St. Thomas, VI While watching my Mom make clothes, the beauty of the clothes grew into me. I have always loved something different; something just for myself. I fell in love with fashion when I was

18. As a store owner, I am independent. I have freedom to do whatever I want based solely on what I like. This is a challenging role because if I do well with my purchases; I benefit. If not, it cripples me. Sometimes I like to educate my customers about new trends and next season’s fashions. Going to market helps me to stay aware of what is going on in the outside fashion world. Betty Perkins Tosh Fashion Miramar, FL This all started when I was a little girl seeing my Mom dress nicely for church with her beautiful hat. Through fashion, I can help to present not only the beauty of a well crafted garment but also the perfect color and a different look for each customer. I love beautiful collections. Owning a fashion store, I get to use my expertise to coordinate colors and styles so that the customer gets the look they want when they turn to the mirror. I feel my mission is accomplished when I see my customers able to wear something they never have before and look pretty. Carolyn Land Cart’Air Boutique Houston, TX I have loved fashion and beautiful things all of my life. Early on, I learned about fashion by reading books. I knew I wanted my career to somehow be a fashion venture because I like to express myself through the beauty of fashion. Going to market helps me to understand the fashion trend. As a store owner, I have the opportunity to purchase merchandise that I predict my customers will like to wear. I want my customers to wear my Cart’Air collections and to feel good to wherever they plan to go. Zeldi Lustig Unique Boutique Coney Island, NY I have been a store owner since 1981 and fashion is my whole life. My desire was to grow and achieve success in my career. Fashion has helped me to fulfill that goal. As a fashion store owner, I use my talent and fashion sense to dress my customers. They often come to my store for a consultation. To make their entire shopping experience complete, I offer top customer service and fantastic packages to make them happy. It is all about the customer and I spread my passion and love to them.
