Editor’s Letter
The Fearless Issue features small talks with JSong Way friends in different stages of their professional careers and precareer studies. Their interesting point of views and striking photos are featured throughout the issue.
I hope you are safe and well. It has been a
while since the last issue of Way Magazine. If you are following our JSong Way Newsletter, you already know we have gone through several changes including moving our studio twice and finally settling down in Brooklyn’s Brighton Beach. Last Spring, we created the Green Fashion Revolution Campaign on Indiegogo and we are so grateful to everyone who responded. See our thank you note on page 27. Your kindness and support will always inspire the JSong team on our sustainable fashion journey. Many of the articles and interviews in this issue were written before the Covid-19 Pandemic. Self-quarantine provided me an opportunity to read and savor each of the articles over and over. The wisdom and energy from these brilliant contributors helped me focus on the challenges facing our industry including finding more ways to build our sustainable future. I hope the articles will also bring light to you as you create your own paths to a new normal. We also want to thank all our YouTube subscribers. Finally after a long period of isolation, my colleagues and I were able to reopen our studio. We are together again. We appreciated seeing each other and we expressed our immense gratitude that we are safe and healthy. Thank you to all the people who have been working on the frontlines! We can’t help but feel deep sympathy for the many lives lost to the pandemic. Our thoughts are with all who lost loved ones. We are also focusing on a reawakening of a society that holds a respectful place for each of us and social justice for all of us. This year like no other has provided an opportunity to exam ourselves fearlessly. We can focus on what we can do to truly create happiness for ourselves and everyone around us. Life is precious! Q: Dear Marylou: What’s the latest in sustainable fashion? Make that: What’s the latest in affordable sustainable fashion? __ G.C., Hapeville, GA. Dear G.C.: The latest eco-worthy designs are the brainchildren of Way Zen, JSong’s multi-talented designer/thinker/innovator. Here’s her explanation of why she developed what she calls the upcycled T-shirt: “The fashion industry is facing a seemingly impossible task. As one of the biggest contributors to pollution, fashion designers are looking for different solutions and new ways to make fashion with the least environmental impact. At JSong Way, we’ve developed a sustainable upcycled T-shirt program.” The basic idea is to take a simple cotton T-shirt and customize it with neckline, sleeve and length alterations/transmogrifications made from scraps, patchwork pockets and embroidery stitching from the leftover bin in JSong’s atelier. The T-shirts, made in New York, are available in sizes 4 through 22, with descriptions on how to measure. Now here comes the best part: Each T can be customized to the wearer’s wishes—make that withinreason wishes—from a choice of color (black, white or blue), length, sleeve or sleeveless and fabric patchwork availability. Way Zen’s illustration here is her version of the sustainable T inspired by the Brooklyn Bridge and its suspension wires. It’s a crewneck T with illusional collars and functional pockets created by patchwork, and embroidery imitating the suspension wires. And now: The almost best part: The T is priced at $149, with customization available within five business days. You could say that Designer Way is way, way ahead of the pack in upcycling. Q: Dear Marylou: In the July 24 edition of The New York Post, there’s a big article reporting that “New research says ties interrupt blood flow and increase the risk of stroke. Is it time for businessmen to cut loose?” One part of the story states that the British Journal of Opthalmology found that a tight necktie increases intraocular pressure and “could affect the diagnosis and management of glaucoma”. And here’s the fashion message: “Forcing men into a specifically ‘male’ article of clothing, especially one that is linked to negative health effects, is a form of gender discrimination.” Could this be the end of neckties for men?__ J.I., New York, NY. Dear J.I.: But first this message. The Post story you refer to appeared almost the same day, July 26, that WWD, the country’s leading trade publication covering both menswear and womenswear (plus accessories, beauty and business) showed the 39 menswear looks it considers the top men’s trends for spring 2019. The only tie in this lineup was one tied loosely and tucked into an open-neck sport shirt with “Dad jeans”. As American journalist Linda Ellerbee put it: “If men can run the world why can’t they stop wearing neckties?” It’s a knotty problem. Q: Dear Marylou: I will be coming to New York in January, and would like to wear my fox jacket, but I don’t want to become a target for anti-fur militants. Advice?__ W.M.D., Omaha, NE. Dear W.M.D.: If last winter was any indication, you’ll see furs on the streets of Manhattan come January. Even celebrities like Naomi Campbell, who once posed naked for PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals), was widely photographed in fur outfits. And Vogue’s Anna Wintour, who once had a dead fur-bearing animal thrown on her plate while lunching at the Four Seasons restaurant, was not afraid to further the cause of fur. Q: Dear Marylou: My fiancée is a Virgo. What should I buy her for her birthday? What should I not buy her?__ N.N., Cleveland, OH. Dear N.N. Because Virgo is an earth sign, your fiancée would probably love something in an earthy color such as warm, muted beige, clay, brown and gray. Do not buy her red, yellow or orange (alas, three of the hottest colors of the season). Detail-minded Virgos appreciate clothes and accessories with details. As in: Clothes with jewels and flowers, pants with patterns or prints (trending high) and, of course, a T-shirt with a Virgo logo. It
was in Way Magazine 2007 that I first interviewed Georgia Lee. She was S.E. Bureau Chief of Women’s Wear Daily in Atlanta. We talked about her experience as a journalist and how she viewed the ever-changing fashion industry. She emphasized the importance of accumulating knowledge and, just as importantly, always looking at the broader implications. “We are never too old to learn something,” she said. “I’m still working on what I want to be when I grow up.” After 13 years, what is she up to? In August 2018, she was crowned Ms. Alabama Senior America. In October, 2018, she represented Alabama in the Ms. Senior America Pageant in Atlantic City, NJ. JSong was so honored when she asked us to make her evening gown based on a photo she had seen from former competitions. Georgia, like designer Way Zen, is a perfectionist and multi-talented, with enormous energy and a fierce competitive spirit. We knew her dress had to be special. You can follow the creation of her customized dress on page 50. She is still focused on the importance of journalism and its changing nature, and how a novice can break into the field today. EK: As an experienced journalist, what advice would you give someone who wants to get into this field?

GL: Basic writing skills are necessary. A willingness to learn on the job is just as important. The importance of research cannot be emphasized enough. It’s not enough to re-write a press release, or worse, print one as is. A journalist must be able to dig for the truth and learn interview skills. When interviewing, take cues from the answers and lead the subject into other questions. Never be afraid to ask a question or to ask for clarification. No question is dumb. Journalists must write to make readers understand; and that can’t happen if the journalist isn’t clear on the topic before writing.

EK: Your 2007 WWD story Doing Good for the World – While Shopping described how fashion brands were becoming involved with causes and charities as a way to raise brand awareness. Do you see anything different now? GL: At that time, it was fashionable to be charitable – every brand was doing it. There is great opportunity for brands to do good by donating to victims in disasters, etc., but it’s a double-edged sword. Consumers are smart. They can see through disingenuous campaigns. Especially young customers who dislike feeling manipulated and want to see authenticity. EK: What made you decide to participate in a pageant competition? GL: When I was a little girl, Miss America was like a fantasy. I loved the beautiful clothes the contestants wore! When I heard about a Ms Senior America Pageant State Contest, I wanted to give myself a try. I never expected to win the title of Ms Alabama. I did it to motivate myself. I have always had performance anxiety, though at the same time, I’ve always performed – music, dance, theatre. When I won, I was shocked. It was unreal, like a dream! I felt like those girls on television when I was small and couldn’t believe this was happening to me. EK: How did you feel when you were on stage facing the judges? GL: Dancing a solo ballet was the hardest part. I worked 2-3 hours a day. I was in great shape from that, but my body was in pain and I was afraid I wouldn’t be able to finish my ballet. I was terrified waiting backstage before I performed in Atlantic City, but once I was onstage, that also felt like a dream. I just knew there was no turning back and kept going. EK: How did you deal with the nerves and pain? GL: I constantly did things I never do – hot tubs, acupuncture, chiropractors, doctors, anti-inflamatory medicine. I hate to go to doctors but I knew I needed it when I was looking at the directory for the chiropractor and fell down just standing there! My body crumbled to the floor.
Nurses came running out of offices. I felt maybe this isn’t such a good idea, but I have been extremely competitive my whole life. My whole family is from Alabama, and I wanted my deceased parents to be proud of me. Just as I planned, I went on and danced to Beautiful Dreamer, my father’s favorite song.

EK: Many people crave retirement. What advice do you have for someone getting ready to retire regarding maintaining or pursuing a happy active life? GL: When people get older, they use that as an excuse to not participate in sports, exercise or social groups. I tell my yoga students to never use the words “too old” or “I can’t”. Everyone should have projects, things to look forward to, no matter how small. It is so important to stay involved with friends and groups of people, sharing activities. When I find myself isolating, I usually get down and depressed. I have to make myself get out there. EK: What will you work on next? Any projects in the pipeline? GL: I have speaking and charity opportunities in Alabama, especially for seniors this year. I am working on a memoir about me and my son and our challenging relationship. I’m not in denial or a happy-go-lucky person but I know we have to keep going. Someone said “start living or start dying.” I believe that. EK: Georgia, thank you for the inspiration!

The Essence Magazine Fashion Editor of 30 years and a beloved teacher of the High School of Fashion Industries By Edward Kwang
This
issue we are revisiting Ionia Dunn Lee Cisse (Way Magazine 2006 and 2015) to learn how a top fashion editor became an educator propelling new talent into the fashion industry. Cisse majored in Early Childhood Education at California State University. Then for over 30 years she was the Fashion Editor of Essence Magazine. Now she is a fashion design teacher and work based learning coordinator for the High School of Fashion Industries (HSFI) in New York City. Ionia shared with Way Magazine what it is like changing from a fashion editor to a fashion high school teacher. Edward: As Fashion Editor of a major fashion magazine, what part of the job did you like most? Ionia: I enjoyed creating the stories, coordinating the photo shoots, and seeing the vision come alive on the pages of Essence Magazine every month. I also enjoyed the traveling. I enjoyed the many different everyday people, celebrities, and professionals whom I met and had the opportunity to dress. E: How did you transfer your fashion journalism knowledge to education? I: With the fashion knowledge that I gained while at the magazine, I am able to provide the students with real world experiences for their fashion assignments. I am also able to provide internships with professionals based on the student’s field of interest. These were professionals that I met while working at Essence Magazine.

E: It could not have been an easy transition. I: After leaving Essence Magazine, and before teaching, I developed a styling business with my sons. After the styling business, I became a college professor teaching at Fashion Institute of Technology, LIM College, Berkeley College, PARSONS, and Wood-Tobe Coburn. E: Why did you choose to teach fashion after leaving the industry? I: I registered with the New York Public Schools System to become a substitute teacher and was given an assignment to substitute at the High School of Fashion Industries. I fell in love with the entire HSFI family. It was then I decided that I never wanted to go to any other school. E: JSong has welcomed HSFI interns since Spring 2015. They are well disciplined with high standards. We can tell how much they admire you when we mention “Ms Cisse”. You seem more than a teacher to them. I: As a high school teacher of fashion design, pattern-making, and construction (sewing), I feel fulfilled. The students give me purpose and inspire me to come up with creative ways to teach them the skills they will need to be successful in the careers that they choose. Everyday I learn from my students how to teach them. It is a collaborative effort between students and teacher. However, I am concerned about every aspect of their lives. I frequently let them know I love them and want the very best for them. E: Sustainability is a great part of what JSong focuses on. You are a big supporter of our sustainability programs and I am sure you pass this
along to your students. What is your view on incorporating sustainability into fashion? I: I believe in sustainability and feel that it’s beneficial to the planet when we repurpose and not waste products. Sustainability also encourages people to be innovative with new ways to create fashion. E: You held a great fashion show for the National CARES Mentoring Movement Gala. That was awesome! What is the inspiration and message behind National CARES? I: National Cares Mentoring Movement partnered with the High School of Fashion Industries to support the next generation of designers and to provide a scholarship. The partnership with National Cares Mentoring Movement has been truly rewarding for our students as well as for the staff. Through this wonderful partnership, we are both able to provide the students with the tools that they will need to succeed in any area of the fashion industry. E: After so much accomplishment, are you fearful that the fast changes in technology will make many things we did before become obsolete? I: I really enjoy teaching and sharing all of the knowledge and experience that I have attained over the years with students. I still attend classes and take courses to stay fresh and current. There is always room for improvement and attaining more knowledge is the best way to improve on what you already know. Technology will help with that. I like to think that I am still growing. No worries. . .

Blogger: @aliceinqueens What achievement of yours are you especially proud of? When I was working at a bank 9 years ago, I decided to leave my job and started a personal blog called aliceinqueens.com because I love fashion. Although running my blog has not always been smooth sailing, it has brought me many opportunities to learn about different brands and interview renowned designers and celebrities. I also began to produce fashion shows and help brands with marketing and sales. Best of all, I have been fortunate to meet and work with many wonderful people such as the team at JSong. What is your ideal job? My ideal job is one where I feel like I’m making a difference to the world and I feel that I’m being challenged and growing. Are you fearless or fearful about the future?
I’m not completely fearless about the future. I will do my best to encourage myself to not give up when facing obstacles and stay positive even when I’m feeling fearful. Many fear failing. Do you ever fear failing? Life can be unpredictable but we can’t be fearful all the time or we will not attempt to do anything and stay on the safe side. Sometimes it is better to fail and try something rather than not try at all. What is your view of sustainability? Sustainability is so important for our future. To be sustainable, it’s important to relearn how to appreciate everything around us including our belongings, our relationships, and our environment. When we consider purchasing something, we should also consider whether it really brings value to our lives.

How JSong Way custom order works 1. Select a design from JSongway.com that you want to customize. Describe your dream garment including fit, color, fabric and budget. Share looks that inspire you, so we understand your style even better. 2. JSong will present sketches for your review. Receive a quoted preview of designs and fabrics. Approve or request modifications. Send us your measurements or let us guide you with measurement taking (available online or offline). 3. Place your order. It usually takes 5-7 business days to create a fitting muslin for you. Muslin can be mailed to you or you are welcome to visit our studio for your fitting. We will make any necessary adjustments to the pattern after the fitting. Then your unique garment will be delivered to your door (worldwide delivery available).
Here are a few examples of how we helped to create some memorable outfits with Joy and Song. Maryalice Finch wanted a special outfit for her Baptism Cer-
emony. She liked the gold sequin jacket on JSongway.com but wanted it in a different color with a matching skirt and customized to fit perfectly. We scheduled an appointment to take her measurements. She chose the colors purple and gold. We were happy to provide the outfit for Maryalice’s life changing occasion.
Ms. Mathia Sanders from Omaha, Nebraska needed
a gold lace dress for her son’s wedding. We asked her to send her measurements and the length she preferred. Three days after receiving her measurements, we sent her a fitting muslin and lace swatches. After she received the fitting muslin, she sent us photos and we made adjustments on the pattern from the photos and phone calls. Ms. Sanders looked radiant and beautiful in her gold lace dress as the mother of the groom as shown on p. 61.
Georgia Lee, writer and Ms. Alabama Senior America 2018, commissioned JSong to design a gown. She submitted a photo of what she liked to provide inspiration. We mailed her a few sketches and selected some sample fabric swatches for her review. Ms. Lee selected the sketch and we created the fitting muslin. After she received it, she gave us feedback and we adjusted the pattern. She flew from Atlanta to NYC and we took her to several fabric companies for final fabric selection. It was a journey well worthwhile to make a beautiful dress that she treasures as shown right and on page 27. 50
