Choosing a good puppy trainer Q
I am buying a new puppy and want to choose a good trainer, what should I be looking for?
That is a very good question and one that should be continually asked by every dog owner! We probably all have pre-conceived ideas about what a dog trainer is and know the type of people we get along with and those we don’t. Selecting the right person to help you train your dog can be a bit of a minefield. So, let’s consider the following points, firstly your dog trainer needs to be somebody that focuses on training you to train your dog, they won’t be living with you and joining you on every walk, so it is up to you to be your dog’s natural teacher and this is what you need to learn. Training any practical subject also requires skills in planning, setting objectives and targets, what do you need to achieve? Drifting along with no plan and no feelings of achievement is a bit like a pilot not knowing where to fly to. Are you going to compete, or do you just want to enjoy owning a well behaved, sociable and lovable companion? It goes without saying that your dog trainer also needs to possess a wide range of effective ‘human’ communication skills and is approachable. They should be able to assess and understand your capabilities, be encouraging and understand your physical needs too. Cold, wet weather, a cold dingy hall is equally as bad as a hot, indoor school hall that is slippery and echoes too much for you to be able to hear what they are saying! You should feel comfortable to practice exercises and ask questions with them observing you, especially if you attend classes. Your trainer needs to encourage a relaxed, friendly and welcoming club and have group training skills with a knowledge of different human learning styles. I always recommend contacting a dog trainer and asking to attend their club to observe in the first instance. If they are not willing, or friendly on the telephone they don’t choose them! It sounds obvious, but you really don’t need to be looking for a sergeant major style trainer for a family pet (or for any else!). So, we have established that they need people skills, but on the other end of the lead is a canine, so an understanding of canine behaviour, communication and health needs is essential. A professional dog trainer will also be able to know about legislation, local policies and be able to inform you of a dog owner’s health and welfare responsibilities in addition to knowing the functional anatomy and physiology of dogs and possess appropriate insurance. If they have a web site, check out what information they provide, see if they possess their own code of ethics or belong to an association that requests members to follow theirs. Of course, these days, unlike 30 years ago when I started dog training there are several dog training and canine behaviour qualifications, so ask if they have any or have received any formal training. For some dog trainers this can be like ‘lighting the touch paper’ and they may become defensive, but honestly, they shouldn’t mind you asking. It doesn’t matter if they are not qualified, provided they are not stuck in the dark ages with their approach to training! They must possess an understanding of animal learning theories, principles and techniques and not just rely on ‘harsh’ outdated methods, like using their hands to push your developing puppy’s hips into a forced sit, we have moved on from this approach and expect professionals to actively take part in ‘continuing professional development’. An up to date knowledge of available and appropriate training equipment will also provide an indication of their knowledge and their ability to help you! Lastly but not at all least is an understanding and desire to work within animal welfare and know the needs of the dogs while in their care – I bet you are really pleased you asked the question!

Walking dogs on a split lead I am taking on my son’s Akita but already own a retriever they both get on well. I wondered if I should walk them joined together on a split lead?
Q
In my professional opinion, no as this can limit your control of either dog. It is good they both get on and may be about the same size, so generally walking them together should be fine. Make sure they are both individually lead trained, responsive to your commands and happy to lead walk on either side of you. My advice would be to walk them on individual collars and leads (or other suitable equipment) so you can individually adjust your control as needed, I am sure they will enjoy their walk more too!

Troublesome Treacle CATCH UP EACH MONTH WITH OUR OFFICE DOG'S ANTICS!!! Dear Furry, feathered and human friends,
Last month I was looking for a partner on a dog dating site called 'Furever Yours.' I'd met the lovely Boston who is now a good friend (there wasn't that spark) and we go out to the park and just chat about life and how lucky we are to be dogs with lovely kind owners and how we wouldn't want to be humans as they seem to all work very hard and look stressed all the time. We swap stories about the naughty things we get up to and our favourite haunts, including where to find fox poo, lost tennis balls and chase cats! I've decided that for now, I prefer to be single and just enjoy the company of good friends. All this online dating has left me disappointed since most dogs on the site seem to be only after one thing. One of the lovely advertisers in this magazine- The Pet Perfume Boutique www.petperfume.co.uk sent me two bottles of perfume ! One called Coco and the other Jo MaBonePomegranite Noir
Well my friends I smell totally adorable and I am having trouble keeping Mistress away from trying them herself. The Pet Perfume Boutique is the home of natural designers of dog perfume and cologne. They have created a range of colognes and perfumes for the most discerning of dog noses and smell similar to the most popular perfumes and aftershaves in the high street. Their range is natural, kind to the skin and long-lasting and dogs have more sensitive skin than humans, they have carefully balanced the PH levels to suit us. I have never worn perfume before and I smell very nice. Little Mistress is certainly cuddling me more and asking what the fabulous smell is behind my ears!! If one surprise in the post wasn't enough, I was having a doze when a van turned up at the house and Mistress took delivery of lovingly and Gently Hand Cooked dog food straight from the freezer from the Kitchen of Different Dog www.differentdog.com What a selection and I understand they change their new and exciting recipes every week using freshest seasonal ingredients from local suppliers! Mistress put most of the well packaged recyclable food tubs into the freezer but some in the fridge to defrost in time for my tea. When it came to eat-I was drooling. Not a pretty sight. As Mistress put the contents from the tub of food into my bowl I woofed it down-it was fabulous! Charlie and Alex Thurstan set up Different Dog from their kitchen table,

So here I am writing my column smelling great wearing Coco and with a happy tummy. What more could a dog want? As you all know it has been very hot so my walks are early in the morning or evenings when it is a bit cooler. In between my outings I have had a lot of fun too. Being creative to pass the time. Here's a few things you may want to try, if you haven't already! When your Mistress or Master uses the hose to water the garden, throw yourself into the spray and just go mad!! If you see a fly (nasty germy insects!) chase it all around the house. They are surprisingly hard to catch so this activity will pass a lot of time and give you a work-out. When the mop comes out and the floor is being washed get sliding! Careful thoughtake it easy at first. I am off for a wee nap now. See you next month

Office Dogs Have ‘T-riffic’ Time Been there, done that, got the T-shirt. Having dogs in the workplace is a cause close to the hearts of Fish4Dogs staff – so much so, that they produced ‘tour’ T-shirts with the name of their canine colleagues and wore them in celebration of Bring Your Dogs to Work Day.

The full ensemble of staff dogs were in attendance to support the annual event and the team enjoyed a lunch-time dog walk together before settling down to an afternoon’s work with a regular supply of tasty treats on hand.
It was also a double celebration for regular workplace attendee Chaz, the wire-haired terrier companion to Head of Marketing Jo Little, who enjoyed extra fuss for his 16th birthday. In addition to being a corporate sponsor, staff raised extra funds for All Dogs Matter, the official charity of #BringYourDogToWorkDay. Dogs really are at the heart of Fish4Dogs. Research has identified that having dogs in the workplace can have positive benefits for employee productivity and wellbeing – including reducing stress levels in the workplace, increased job satisfaction, team co-operation and morale. The company has enjoyed rapid growth in recent years, with turnover increasing six-fold in just eight years. With a
substantially lower than average staff turnover, Fish4Dogs are sticking by their dog policy! Fish4Dogs CEO, Graham Smith, whose own dog Sadie, a springer spaniel, joined him for the day said: “We always have dogs in the office but it was really nice to have 16 regular attendees here at the same time. There were moments of managed mayhem but it gave us all a smile and the opportunity to celebrate what we are about – a love of dogs which we all share and which is at the heart of our business.”

Your Pets and Allergies S
ummer has arrived and so have all the pollens, the grass is long and started to seed. For humans that suffer from hay fever we know how awful it can be, some of us have mild symptoms but for some of us it can become debilitating. Our dogs can react the same way. Most commonly, they show externally in the deterioration of the skin and hair condition, which can become itchy, flaky and sore with a rash. Your dog will itch, scratch and lick the area which can cause broken skin, hot spots, hair loss & secondary infections. Internally the dogs immune system remembers the allergen and produces more histamines. These histamines act like bouncers and do anything to get rid of the allergen in or on your body, making you sneeze, itchy, runny eyes - whatever it can do to get them off/out of your body. There are three types of allergies your dog can suffer from; a food allergy, which with diagnosis you can control by removing the ingredient. Although finding the source can take some time by a method of illumination and re-introduction of food. The most common are wheat gluten, dairy & egg, but it could be anything. Working with your vet and/or a nutritionist this can normally be easily managed. Flea allergy, which again you can treat by eradicating the fleas and having an ongoing treatment plan to help stop them coming back.
The sore skin caused, will recover with topical treatment and time. With both the above allergies the skin will show signs that something isn’t right. The most common allergy though is an atopical allergy (skin allergies). As with humans these can be seasonal or sadly suffer all year round. They’re mainly caused by pollen, dust mites & mould, but some can be grass or one off causes like running in a field that has been treated by a chemical. Whatever the cause, the skin becomes irritated causing your dog discomfort. Obviously you cannot eradicate the cause long term and the condition cannot be cured, so it’s a case of trying to alleviate the symptoms. Your vet can prescribe your dog antihistamines which work like hay fever pills for us and If the skin becomes infected a course of antibiotics and corticosteroid which can help with infection & inflammation. But there are some natural things we can try, such as adding Omega 3 and 6 to their diet. These help to support skin and coat growth. Omega 3 can offer some anti-inflammatory response in the body too. Often when you see dogs that suffer with allergies it tends to be worse on their tummies and their feet. This can be associated with a reaction to grass, which is hard to avoid for your dog. So after walks using a cloth dampened in cold water, wipe over your pet, all over their bodies but pay special attention to their bellies and armpits. We have all

suffered from sore skin at some point and a cold compress always helps to sooth it. This wiping also helps to remove some of the pollen from the coat. For the paws, dip in cold water to sooth and then towel dry. Using a cream on the sore areas can help, I’ve Showing where coat lost and discoloured through licking. found the best is a Tea tree based cream. Tea tree has natural antifungal, antiseptic and antibacterial properties. One of my horses (well actually a Mule) this year has suffered from Buttercup burn on her lips and a tea tree cream really helped her. Adding Echinacea to the diet. Echinacea has been used for centuries to help boost the immune system in humans and animals. My mantra is to think of what helps us:- Cold compress, soothing creams, bathing in cold water (well for me a swimming pool or the sea) and try to apply the same to your dog where appropriate. Obviously, if you are concerned the first stop is your vet for advice and diagnosis, but you will find what works best for you and your dog to alleviate the symptoms of their allergy.

Countdown to National Pet Remembrance Day Begins The countdown has started to national PET REMEMBRANCE DAY, which takes place on Thursday 5th July.
P
et Remembrance Day was launched four years ago by 3D printing specialists Arty Lobster (www.artylobster.com). The national day provides an opportunity for people to celebrate the lives of pets and the increasing number of ways in which we can commemorate them. Pet Remembrance Day is once again proud to support The Oldies Club (www.oldies.org.uk), a national charity, which rehomes dogs aged seven and over in need of homes. A Twitter chat will take place on Tuesday July 5 using the hashtag #PetRemembranceDay for people to
show their support and share thoughts and photos of deceased companion animals. Best-selling author and speaker Wendy Van de Poll, MS, CEOL (Certified End of Life and Pet Loss Grief Coach and Founder of Center for Pet Loss Grief, LLC) explains: “Pet Remembrance Day is a time for outwardly expressing your deepest love for your pets that have reached the end of their lives. “Paying tribute to those animals that touched your heart with a pet funeral, memorial, and remembrance will help you heal your loss all the while keeping the love of your companion close by.”
Pet Cemetary.
Founder Lars B Andersen, CEO of Arty Lobster, said: “Pets are like family, and this national day is an important day when people will take
time out, even if just a few moments, to remember deceased pets.”
On Pet Remembrance Day, there are many ways in which people can remember deceased pets, including: n A memorial service in a place where the pet liked to walk or play. n A living memorial by planting a tree or flowerbed n A pet sculpture or portrait featuring the pet or their image printed on a
coaster or other accessory
n A scrapbook with photos and other reminders of the pet. n An online memorial with photos of the pet n A poem about the pet n Donating to charity like The Oldies Club or volunteering at an animal
rescue centre in remembrance of the pet
A NEW BREED OF DOG FOOD Different Dog is on a mission to make dogs healthier and happier with dog food that is cooked like you would at home Charlie and Alex Thurstan set up Different Dog from their kitchen table, in response to their own dog Crumble’s dietary needs and the inadequacy of available dog foods. Having worked in the industry and been outraged by how processed foods are made, and the ingredients that go into them, the husband and wife team were determined that dog food could be made completely differently – and deliver far greater health benefits for dogs. After an 18-month journey, with more than 150 recipes tried, endless trips to the lab for nutritional testing, and countless clean bowls from Crumble and her furry friends, Different Dog was born. Different Dog uses the freshest natural ingredients, and cooks them by hand in a pan, to create a product that looks, smells and tastes like home cooked classics such as casserole or a bolognese, and unlike 10
any other dog food currently available. Different Dog cooks meals in small batches in their kitchen in Shropshire, and, uniquely, creates a new recipe every week to ensure true variety and balance in a dog’s diet. Dishes currently cooking in the Different Dog kitchen include Minted Lamb, Super Green Chicken and Beef and Blueberry. With a team of passionate dog owners, including a vet and a pet nutritionist, recipes are tested out on the Different Dog family for the wagging tail of approval before being made available to customers. And it’s not just four-legged family members who benefit - any leftover ingredients are taken home and eaten round the kitchen table by friends and family at the end of the week, helping to minimize waste. Charlie and Alex Thurstan, co-founders of Different Dog commented; “We started Different

If you go out to for a country walk you may just run into Caroline Hearn Foraging for Organic ingredients to make her now famous Nutritive Herbal blends, supplied by her company Hedgerow Hounds We asked Caroline how her unique business came about ... ‘Dogs are a huge part of my life and I`ve always had at least one dog by my side as a treasured companion from early childhood. My ambition is to attempt to give back some of the unconditional love, incredible loyalty and fun that dogs have given me over my lifetime. After many years of working as a sports and holistic therapist treating people, dogs and horses, the love for natural healthcare, nature and a holistic way of life lead me to create my company called Hedgerow Hounds. I am lucky enough to have access to a large area of organic pasture and ancient hedgerows which my dogs freely wander over on their daily walks. I started to notice that as the seasons changed the dogs were attracted to certain plants, herbs, grasses and berries. They purposefully picked through the vegetation looking for what they wanted on that particular day. They would instinctively know
when herbs were at their very best, such as nibbling on the young shoots of cleavers in March which act as a Spring tonic, nipping out the tops of couch grass when it was sweet and succulent and feasting on blackberries for a vitamin C boost just before the Winter months set in. This lead me to start making the Hedgerow Hounds nutritive herbal blends as I could see just how much enjoyment and benefit the dogs were getting and that so many dogs would never have this opportunity due to location, environment and lack of access to clean, pollution and pesticide free land.
So I got together with my holistic vet and created a range of supplements that used the highest quality herbs, berries, roots and seeds that a dog would naturally forage for if they were freely available. The blends change with the seasons so the dogs are never on the same blend all year round, this not only makes the blends more effective but it also means that your dog has a greater range of
nutrition available to them over the space of the year. They are very versatile so they can easily be added to raw or home cooked meals, simply re-hydrated with a little hot water and stirred into dried foods or alternatively made into a tea. People also use the herbs in homemade treat recipes and for blending vegetables to add into their dogs’ meals.’ Whether you are looking for gentle ways to help your dog cope with anxiety, natural methods to repel fleas & ticks or just an easy way of adding valuable nutrition to raw, home cooked or dried food then Hedgerow Hounds can help. n Visit

Bear's hip after surgery.
Bear in the hyro pool with Jess
Loveable Labradoodle is loving life again! Bear is big and bouncy Labradoodle with a deep, playful bark and sweet nature. At only six years old, Bear is very much in his prime and has always been an extremely active dog, loving his life in Norfolk with his owner, and his fellow Labradoodle playmate, Kitty. Bear never seemed to be obviously lame; however he suddenly became incredibly distressed, needy and just wouldn’t settle. Something was wrong, so his owner, Steve, made an appointment with his vet to get Bear checked out the next day. An x-ray showed that the top of Bear’s left femur was considerably damaged and no longer sitting normally within the hip joint; something which must have been very painful for Bear but that he was very good at hiding. Bear was immediately referred to the Animal Health Trust to explore the option of a left hip replacement and our surgeons went ahead with the operation to fit a prosthetic femur and cup to fix the damaged hip. In order to get back on his feet, Bear needed two months of limited exercise and rest and a course of physiotherapy. Matthew Scott, the AHT’s in-house physiotherapist, started to work on Bear soon after the operation with a combination of ice packing and massage to help reduce the swelling. At his follow-up physio appointments Matthew was able to help Bear use the leg more and more by using weight shifting techniques and progressing onto do a series of sit to stands “doggie squats!”, low pole work (to get Bear moving his feet more) and various other physio techniques to gradually improve range of motion in the joint. Once Bear had progressed enough with the physio and AHT vets were satisfied with his post-op x-rays, Bear was able to finish his rehabilitation with hydrotherapy to build up his strength and muscle mass. Bear had www.rescueandanimalcare.com

five sessions on the water treadmill, where Matthew was able to help improve Bear’s hip extension and overall movement, then three sessions in the hydrotherapy pool. Six months after his surgery, Bear is back to being his big cheeky self again! Bear’s owner, Steven, commented: “The quality of Bear’s care at the AHT has been nothing short of awesome. His consultant, the nurses, and the physio and hydro teams have all been incredible. When we’ve been coming in for his hydrotherapy, we’re often lucky enough to see many of the staff who looked after Bear during his surgery in the corridor and they always stop and give Bear a big dose of fuss. "When Bear sees them, he acts like he does if I’ve been away from home for a while and is so happy to see me. The reception team always know Bear’s name without even checking the computer and greet Bear with tons of enthusiasm. Everyone always says what a special dog Bear is…I agree, but we all think they’re special, don’t we? “It’s been fantastic to know that Bear has been in such great hands throughout his treatment and rehabilitation, and the difference in him just a few months after major surgery is incredible, thanks to the careful aftercare, physio and hydrotherapy Bear received. Huge thanks to everyone involved in looking after our boy and getting back on his feet.” n Visit www.aht.org.uk

Pet Refuge scheme has been keeping pets and their owners together for 14 years Since 2004, London-based animal welfare charity, Mayhew, has been helping pet owners facing a personal crisis and with no option of help to care for their animal, through their vital Pet Refuge programme.
T

Pet Refuge involves Mayhew’s Animal Welfare Officers ensuring that the animal receives the best possible care and is placed in a safe and comfortable environment for the duration of the crisis period. They also receive essential

The Pet Refuge programme sounded ideal and after speaking with the Animal Welfare Officers, they offered to look after Fearne for six weeks, which was the perfect amount of time to give me a break and a chance to get my health back to where it needed to be. “While Fearne was with Mayhew, I was really pleased that they gave her such great care and treatment, she even had a dental procedure, which is something that she had needed for a while. “After six very long weeks being reunited with Fearne was
incredible, I don’t know who was more excited. It was very special for many reasons, for me, my health was so much better, so I had more energy to enjoy the reunion. “Mayhew’s Pet Refuge programme has been a real lifeline for me. It was brilliant that they were able to look after Fearne at such a crucial time. I hate to think what I would have had to do without it. The thought of giving up Fearne completely is horrible because we are both so happy together.” Mayhew’s Animal Welfare Officer, Tania Mazzoni, added: “It is extremely clear to see that Nayan and Fearne have this incredible bond. They would be lost without each other and that’s why it is so
to hundreds of animals in need. They rely solely on public donations and receive no government funding. So please consider a donation by visiting www.themayhew.org/donate to help them help even more animals. Alternatively you can text “PAWS37 £5” or your chosen amount up to £10 to 70070.
Case Study For Nayan, who has recurring health issues, Mayhew’s Pet Refuge programme was the only place he could turn to for help with looking after his beloved 12-yearold Staffie cross called Fearne. Nayan explains: “I live with a disability that keeps me at home a lot of the time, so adopting Fearne from Mayhew just over three years ago helped me at a really crucial time of my life. I tell people that we rescued each other. She gets me up in the mornings and out the door when probably not much else would. “After adopting Fearne from Mayhew, I’ve followed the charity ever since and that’s how I first heard about Pet Refuge. At a time where my health was particularly 14

important that we were able to help during this crisis period and fundamentally keep them together.” For many vulnerable people, their dog is their best friend, so Mayhew are proud to have helped keep them together and provided essential care to so many animals over the past 14 years.

Bert and Ernie at HorseWorld
Ernie entering a show with his previous loaner
Young cob rescued from neglect is ready to find a home
I
n November 2013, horse rescue charity HorseWorld agreed to take in two young cobs named Bert and Ernie. They had been rescued as part of a group of ponies who were in very poor condition. Both ponies were underweight and unhandled. When HorseWorld collected them, the ponies
needed extensive hoof care. Their feet were overgrown and infested with maggots. After a few months of remedial hoof trimming, veterinary care and training for basic handling both horses made full recoveries and went on to be assessed by the vet and the chiropractor for future ridden work. Bert
found a loving loan home on HorseWorld’s rehoming scheme soon after. Ernie attended the Bath and West Show in 2015 on HorseWorld’s stand and it was from here that he was rehomed. Whilst at his new home, Ernie began his showing career and attended many different competitions with his horse-guardian. “Unfortunately, Ernie had to return to HorseWorld through no fault of his own” said HorseWorld’s Training Manager, Jodi Thomas. “He is now looking for a new loan home. He is a stunning pony who loves to be pampered and would make a great addition to any family. “We have entered Ernie into the Congresbury Horse Show
Portrait of Ernie www.rescueandanimalcare.com

this Sunday (1st July) in the hope that he will catch someone’s attention who may offer him a home. The show is in Winford on Kingdown Road (not far from Bristol Airport). HorseWorld will have a stand there to raise awareness of the charity’s rehoming scheme. Each horse or pony that is rehomed on the loan scheme makes space for the next rescued horse to begin their journey to a new life. “Ernie is a very sweet boy who is easy to care for. He has been ridden by a young child on the lead rein and has been taken out in hand on the roads without a rider. However, he is still new to ridden work so will need a small, competent rider to continue his education. Alternatively, Ernie may also do very well in harness, for people with appropriate experience to bring on a young driving pony.” n Anyone interested in rehoming a rescued horse can find out more at www.horseworld.org.uk/rehome

HOW ACTIVE SILVER CAN KEEP OUR PETS HEALTHY AND SAVE MONEY ON VETS BILLS Active Silver manufacture Colloidal Silver and related products that can be used as very effective antibacterial, antiviral, antifungal and skin/wound healing solutions. Using silver for medicinal purposes is by no means new - it’s been widely used as a natural treatment throughout history, traced as far back as Ancient Greece. Active Silver’s innovative and world class technology ensures that the silver particles are really small, making
the colloidal silver a very effective treatment to kill bacteria, fight infections, clear up skin conditions, heal wounds/cuts, eye and ear infections, and to boost the immune system too. Active Silver is a family business, set up by Lucy Roberts and her father Dick Goodall. Dick has over 50 years’

experience in the water treatment industry, and has been manufacturing Colloidal silver for over 20 years. As passionate believers in the health benefits of Colloidal silver, and Dick’s background and experience in manufacturing it, he and Lucy decided to formally launch their own brand of Colloidal Silver, Active Silver. Colloidal silver has to be one of the most versatile natural immune system boosters - so before you call the vet and dig deep into your bank accounts, consider trying Active Silver this powerful alternative to antibiotics.

Rescued Shire horse with no tail needs a special rug In November last year, horse rescue charity HorseWorld teamed up with 5 other equine rescue organisations to rescue a large group of abandoned Shire horses. During the 15-hour rescue operation, all 19 horses were successfully removed and taken into the care of the charities.
T
hree of them were taken back to HorseWorld. An elderly mare named Florin, a young filly named Lolly and a slightly older mare named Dime. “Florin is quite arthritic and doesn’t have many teeth left” said HorseWorld’s Vicky Greenslade. “She wouldn’t have survived the winter without special feed and care. Lolly has problems with her hind legs that the vet is

monitoring as she grows. It may be a neurological problem that isn’t going to get better or it may be a result of being malnourished at a young age. “Dime is the healthiest of the three but she has had her tail docked to almost nothing so she cannot relieve herself of the flies that pester and bite horses during the summer months. We toyed with the idea of making hair extensions for her but there is not

enough bone left in her tail to lift it and swish it around. “We would like to buy her a special fly rug to keep the flies off of her but she is so big, it has to be specially ordered for her. We'd like to raise £70 to buy this so we’ve set up an appeal at www.horseworld.org.uk/dime Any extra funds raised will be used to care for and feed the other 104 rescued horses on site.” The three Shire horses were in
a paddock next to the main stable yard at HorseWorld’s Open Day on Saturday 23rd June. The event in Whitchurch, Bristol was FREE to enter and the visitors were able to meet many of the rescued horses, see demonstrations and take tours around the farm. n For more details, please visit

Pets are as vulnerable to heat stress as we are so you need to be extra vigilant at this time
Cats & Dogs Make sure that they are treated against worms and fleas especially heartworm at this time of year and make sure that there is always a plentiful supply of cool, clean water on hand. Look out for the following symptoms of heat stress: • Panting • Difficulty breathing • Drooling • Weakness Take extra care with flat faced pets e.g. Pugs or Persians
20
because they are more susceptible to heat stress because they cannot pant as effectively. Do not leave pets unsupervised around a pool – not all pets are good swimmers but a cool dip is very tempting on a hot summer’s day. Trim long hair but never shave because the hair protects the skin from sunburn. Be especially careful with white coated pets because they are more prone to sunburn than the darker coated variety. It is best to excercise pets early morning and later in the evening especially the elderly and chubby puppies. Do not let your dog linger on hot tarmac and asphalt because they can burn their feet. Remember to keep them in if you use herbicides and always
28 JUNE – 28 JULY 2018 RESCUE AND ANIMAL CARE
make sure pesticides are well out of reach. Make sure that people do not feed them from the barbeque and on no account give them alcohol even if they ask for it (We have a dipso dog in the family who regularly begs at the pub!).
Rabbits Rabbits are very vulnerable to fly strike which will kill so protection during the summer months is essential. Keep your bunny out of the sun – bring
inside if the garden is exposed. Placing a marble or ceramic tile in the cage for them to lie on can help greatly to cool them down. Ensure there is a good supply of fresh vegetables on hand including: • Broccoli • Carrrots • Cauliflower • Celery • Cucumber • Beans or peas • Peppers • Spring greens • Lettuce Make sure elederly or plump bunnies drink plenty of water. Sometimes the heat makes them lethargic and they do not bother even when they are thirsty. Given the right level of protection, your pets can enjoy the summer as much as you do! n For further information, please do not hesitate to call the Bio-Life Helpline on 01608 686626 or email mary on sales@biolife-international.co.uk

PRODUCT NEWS “EXPLOSION OF MUTANT SUPER-FLEAS THIS SUMMER” British Pest Control Association predict a Summer explosion of flea activity in homes after the recent hot weather and thunder storms, creating perfect breeding conditions. They stress it is vital to treat homes and furnishings, as well as pets,
to avoid an infestation. Pet owners must appreciate that just killing the fleas on pets is not enough; 95% of the flea life cycle takes place in pet’s bedding and home surroundings such as carpets, soft furnishings, etc. Many owners however, unfortunately, do not heed this advice and become desperate for help on how to deal with flea
infestations on their pets, but also in their carpets, rugs, furnishings, pet bedding and also human bedding where pets share their owners beds. Johnson’s award winning Veterinary Strength 4fleas range for dogs and cats includes 4fleas Spot-on Solution which kills fleas and biting lice on contact, 98 – 100% of fleas within one day following treatment, and kills flea larvae following contact with a treated pet in areas in and around their bedding, resting areas etc. 4fleas Tablets which are very effective and quick acting, starting to kill fleas in 15 minutes and 100% effective within 24 hours. Also safe for use on puppies and kittens from
4 weeks of age and pregnant and nursing animals. 4fleas Household Flea Sprays and 4fleas Room Foggers which contain an I.G.R. (Insect Growth Regulator) to kill fleas and prevent hatching eggs developing into adults, giving protection against re-infestation of pets for up to 7 months. It is also recommended to wash pet bedding regularly at 60 degrees and vigorously vacuum carpets, rugs, floorboards, skirting etc. Johnson’s now have extra supplies of all the 4fleas range to cope with the extra demand and retailers and wholesalers are advised to keep high stocks to avoid shortages over the summer. n For more information visit www.4fleas.co.uk

Do you want to work as an Animal Hydrotherapist? GET QUALIFIED TO WORK AS AN ANIMAL HYDROTHERAPIST! If you have a love and passion for animals and their wellbeing, and some experience/ handling or working with animals, this could be a great new career for you. There is a great deal of flexibility in a Canine Hydrotherapy career. You could begin working in a company or set up your own business. Depending on your client base, your hours are likely to be very flexible and can be managed on a full-time or part-time basis. What is Animal Hydrotherapy?: Animal Hydrotherapists use hydrotherapy techniques to help animals with rehabilitation needs to recover from injury or as part of pain management or even as a type of exercise for animals with mobility issues. An Animal Hydrotherapy session is commonly required as a form of rehabilitation following injury, or major surgery. Vets will refer animals to a registered animal hydrotherapist, who will review their case before creating a suitable course of treatment. Hydrotherapy is a fantastic way to gradually improve the strength and conditioning following surgery, or an injury, as it is low-impact. Hydrotherapy can also be used to help animals that need to lose weight. As it is a low impact form of exercise, there is a lower risk of injury. It is also a great stress-busting activity, which can help improve overall circulation and reduce joint and muscle pain. To work as a registered Animal Hydrotherapist, you must successfully complete the ABC Awards Level 3 Diploma course in Hydrotherapy for Small Animals. Animal Jobs Direct is an approved Animal Hydrotherapy training centre and will assist you every step of the way. The theory elements of these courses includes subjects such as; the management of medical conditions in hydrotherapy, small animal first aid, anatomy & physiology for small animals and water management. The practical training for the Level 3 courses can be undertaken either in Oxfordshire or Newcastle. Our Animal Hydrotherapy courses are also available to international students as the assessments can be done by video link. When you have completed one of these regulated qualifications, you can seek employment as an Animal Hydrotherapist (register with our Job Board for the latest vacancies, or contact Animal Hydrotherapy centres near where you live with your CV). Or alternatively, set up your own Animal Hydrotherapy business! Contact us on 0208 6269646 or visit our website for more information.

A poodle, who was so matted that he could barely see, was recently discovered roaming the streets after being dumped on the busy North Circular road in the middle of the night.
A
member of the public noticed the 10-year-old wandering into the road and nearly getting hit by oncoming traffic in Dollis Hill, North West London, so immediately called the police. At 4am the police brought the poodle, named Brian, into animal welfare charity, Mayhew. Mayhew’s Animal Welfare Officer, Tania Mazzoni, said: “When Brian first arrived he was so matted that he kept
bumping into walls because he couldn’t see properly. The poor poodle even had excrement caught up in his fur and was filthy. “We don’t know how long he’d been walking the streets of North West London for, but he was so exhausted, and finally feeling safe, he fell asleep while our Kennels team were clipping him. “We can’t imagine how terrifying it must have been for Brian to be left

like that and we wish whoever had abandoned him had called us first. At Mayhew we are here to assist and advise on the best course of action for the animal, no matter what the problem is.” After being clipped, Brian was quickly seen to by Mayhew’s experienced Vet team at their on-site Community Vet Clinic and was given a thorough health check. Mayhew’s Vet, Dr Emma Robinson,
said: “When Brian first arrived he was very matted and dirty, so he had to be clipped and bathed. He had a vaccination and flea and worming treatment. He also has some problems with his eyes, which still need further investigation.”

We hope you are enjoying the start of the great British summer as much as we are here at Tails HQ! This season can be a stressful time for pet owners, which is why we asked our supporters for their top tips for a happy heatwave. Turn to page 18 for some ideas you won’t want to miss. With the sound of royal wedding bells still ringing in our ears, it is also officially the time of year for dusting the hat off and celebrating with friends. We speak to wedding and pet photographer Rowan Williams and Mayhew’s Deputy Head of Animal Welfare, Tanya Madden, on page 12 to find out how to include your dog in the big day. Don’t forget to put our Hounds on the Heath event in your diary on 15 July. It’s one of the highlights of our summer (see page 28) and we can’t wait to see you there!

Lord Gardiner said: “We’re very concerned about unscrupulous breeders and we think this may well be a way of helping tackle the problem.” Lord Gardiner met Mayhew CEO, Caroline Yates, who said: “This is a real issue that animal welfare organisations are very concerned about. Getting a dog or cat is not a commercial business and the big puppy farms have no regard for the health or welfare of animals.” At the time of going to press, all interested parties – including Mayhew – have submitted their evidence and we await the next steps to be taken by the government.

A funtastic performance
W
e’d like to say a big thank you to the children’s musical production group, Funtastico, in Cologne, Germany, who raised an amazing €840 for Mayhew International in March. The very talented group of 50 youngsters, aged between four and 13 years old, put on an incredible performance of the musical ‘Cats’ and very generously donated all the profits to our overseas projects. Mayhew’s Chief Vet, Dr Ursula Goetz, went along to the performance and gave a short talk about our work following the all-singing, all-dancing show.
Best practice makes perfect
T
his year Mayhew will be training 20 national and international vets through our vet training programme at our state of the art Community Vet Clinic. The vets each spend two weeks training with our Chief Vet, Dr Ursula Goetz, and the rest of the Vet team. As part of the training, we provide an insight into pre and post-operative care, protocols and techniques for improved animal handling, efficient sterilisation techniques and pain management. Implementing these best practice methods significantly helps to reduce the risk of complications during and postoperation, improves animal welfare and minimises the stress to the animals before, during and after neutering and general surgery.
F
ollowing on from our rebrand last year, we are very excited to announce that our brand new website is about to launch. In an increasingly digital world, our website is a key tool to reach our supporters and it is often the first port of call for people trying to contact us. We’ve listened to your feedback and the new website will be easier to use, and will allow us to help our supporters and their animals more easily, as well as find homes for our residents more quickly. The new site will be up and running by midJune, so keep an eye on www. themayhew.org to see it first!

SUMMER 2018
It takes two
This Volunteers’ Week (June 1-7), we’re celebrating the amazing people who give over 1,000 hours a month to keep Mayhew running. From dog and cat socialisers to our reception team, our volunteers are essential to everything we do.

06/06/2018 11:43
There’s one team of volunteers who have a certain stand out feature: they are formed of human and dog pairs!
Mayhew’s TheraPaws Coordinator, Niamh Carwood, who manages our visiting animal therapy programme, meets some of our extraordinary TheraPaws teams to hear why they got involved in the project, and uncovers the highs (and lows!) of working with your four-legged friend.
Peter and Tobi
Peter Waldman and his dog Tobi, a Weimaraner, have been TheraPaws volunteers since November 2015. Where do you regularly visit? We visit Leonora House each Wednesday for one and a half hours.
What attracted you to the TheraPaws Programme? Life has been very good to me and I’ve had more than a little luck on my side, so sharing the free time I have seemed a good thing to do. It’s been more than a two way event in that I’ve got a great deal out of it myself and Tobi does very well on the treats! Do you remember your first visit? It was an eye opener in that although the care home is extremely well run, there was such a need for the normal interaction that is part of everyday life: simple company and a chat.
What’s your fondest memory so far? There are so many. One person I visit drew the most wonderful pencil sketch of Tobi, which is framed on the wall. I smile each time I see it. Another thinks of Tobi as his best friend and the joy in his face when we visit is difficult to put into words. FUN FACT- Tell us something that your dog does that you love and something your dog does that you don’t love? Tobi has the habit of rolling on his back when we’re on the tube, which always brings a smile or two to those travelling with us. As for the down side, he nicks the duvet at night by lying in the middle of the bed. I can only blame myself for having let him make himself very much at home in the first place.
Peter, on his dog Tobi.
Deborah and Noodle
Deborah Taffler and Schnauzer Poodle cross, Noodle, joined the programme in August 2015. Where do you regularly visit? We visit the National Institute for Health Research, part of UCL’s cancer research department, in central London, every two weeks. Patients have very long days and our appearance around lunchtime provides tremendous relief for them - many book their appointments on a Wednesday so they get to see Noodle.
What attracted you to the TheraPaws Programme? I wanted to start giving back but I’m not a classic charity volunteer. I bumped into a lady with her TheraPaws dog and realised that doing voluntary work with my own dog was just the sort of thing I’d love. I’d already witnessed people succumbing to her charms and as I’m in remission from cancer myself, I know what a help it was having her company when I was recovering. Continued on next page...

The one thing I don’t love is that he chases people’s footballs and punctures them. He has cost me a lot of money! Lynn, on her dog Bentley.
Do you remember your first visit? We had a trial visit to a care home in Kenton. I was a little nervous, not knowing what Noodle’s reaction would be to a room full of strangers. But she was grand and demonstrated a lovely understanding of who it was appropriate to be bouncy with, and who needed calmer behaviour. She was a natural - the anxiety was all of my own making.
What’s your fondest memory so far? On a visit to the Alzheimer’s and Dementia unit at UCLH, a lady was chirping away, telling us stories about her dog when she was a young child - I suspect she thought Noodle was her dog. Meanwhile, her son was sitting by the bed and to my mind he looked rather uncomfortable, so after a few minutes I said that Noodle needed to pee, and whisked her away. The son swiftly followed me out of the ward and I prepared myself for an awkward conversation until he said, “I was just following to see if there was any chance you could come back for a few minutes. You see my Mum hasn’t spoken to anyone for about four weeks and it’s just great to see her so animated by the dog”. It made my day! TheraPaws works wonders. FUN FACT - Tell us something that your dog does that you love and something your dog does that you don’t love? We have an open banister on the stairs in our house. Every time we come home having left Noodle on her own, she races for the stairs, and shoves her face through the banister at our shoulder height so she can rub noses with us, with her tail wagging so hard it looks like it could fly off. Something that drives me mad is squirrels. She goes into a mental ‘zone’ that stops her focusing on anything but the squirrel, and then on all the imaginary squirrels that she assumes are up all the other trees, once the first one disappears. I can be out for a quick ten minute walk on Primrose Hill and find myself chasing her from tree to tree for two hours! But she always comes back….eventually!
Marina and Luna
Marina Heritier and her dog Luna, a Golden Retriever, are one of our newest volunteer teams, joining in March 2018. Where do you regularly visit? We visit the Dementia Café in Ashford Place Community Centre.
What attracted you to the TheraPaws Programme? It allows volunteers to express compassion towards elderly and vulnerable people via our dogs.
Tell us about your first visit? I remember feeling anxious at that time as I didn’t know what to expect. Luckily Niamh was there to help us settle and all the staff and volunteers at the community centre were very welcoming. What’s your fondest memory so far? My fondest memory during the visits was when Luna put on a singing performance during a sing-along session, with accompaniment of an accordion and a clarinet, to the delight of the audience.
FUN FACT- Tell us something that your dog does that you love and something your dog does that you don’t love? I love how she smiles when you rub her tummy and how her tail wags when she’s very happy. I do not like when she uses our boys’ beds as a hideaway, although I think they quite like it!

Lynn and Bentley
Lynn James and her Staffie Boxer cross, Bentley, have been TheraPaws volunteers since February 2016.
Where do you regularly visit? We visit The Pines, a residential care home in Wandsworth, every fortnight.
What attracted you to the TheraPaws Programme? My dog Bentley gives me so much love and joy, and I wanted to share it with people who need it the most.
Doreen Campbell has been volunteering with TheraPaws since the very beginning – and, amazingly, has been giving her time to Mayhew since 1989! Having spent her first nine years helping socialise dogs and cats, these days she can be found every fortnight at Alan Morkhill Residential Home with her friend Laura and dog Lola.
Do you remember your first visit? Bentley and I were very excited and we felt very welcomed by both the staff and the residents.

SUMMER 2018
Why the cutest dogs are suffering the most
Earlier this year we had an inux of seven French Bulldogs come into our care. The dogs, aged between one-and-a-half and five years old, were handed into Mayhew separately in the space of just one month. Unfortunately, French Bulldogs are one of the many brachycephalic pets that can end up abandoned and in our care either due to ill health or from being bred to sell and no longer wanted.
Elsa was in a bad state
W
hile six of the French Bulldogs were all treated for varying degrees of health problems often associated with brachycephalic pets including chronic ear infections, skin conditions, and dental problems, there was one that was in a particularly bad state. Elsa, a 5-year-old female, was suffering from multiple problems including an inverted tail. Her screw tail had grown inside her body and the resulting tail pocket was continuously getting yeast and bacterial infections. The bony part of her tail pushed inside her rectum and the area was extremely itchy, painful and uncomfortable for poor Elsa. After spending many months clearing the infections through medication and regular
cleaning, our Vet team were able to surgically remove the bony tip of her tail. It was an incredibly difficult procedure as it was very close to her anus and care had to be taken to ensure her anal muscles were not damaged. The surgery was successful although Elsa was very poorly following the operation. Many brachycephalic breeds, with French Bulldogs often being the most affected, are prone to vomiting post-surgery and Elsa suffered badly and anti-sickness medication had to be prescribed.
Not funny or cute
Brachycephalic breeds suffering from an inverted tail tend to wiggle their bottoms against the floor due to the infections and itchiness. You may have seen videos online showing this and many people
10 I
'Tails' - issue 2 summer*.indd 10
06/06/2018 11:43
think it is a funny or cute trait of these breeds, but it is actually caused by pain and discomfort.
However, not all screw tail dogs are as lucky as Elsa, whose condition was operable. A dog’s vertebrae are the bones in its spine, but unlike humans, in healthy dogs and puppies, the bones of the spine extend way beyond the pelvis to form a long straight tail. Screw tail dogs such as Pugs and French Bulldogs can suffer from malformed spinal bones, known as hemivertebrae, which have an odd shape that can cause the whole spinal column to twist. If these bones are confined to the tail, the twisting may not affect the dog’s spine in any significant way. But if there are deformed hemivertebrae bones in the main part of the spine, the twisting can put pressure on the spinal nerves that lie within the column of vertebrae and result in neurological problems for the dog. Thankfully, Elsa hasn’t shown signs of any neurological issues.
Ongoing problems
Due to her bulging eyes, a common trait in flat-faced breeds, Elsa’s eyes constantly water because they are exposed to more air and dry out quicker. Also a lack of proper tear draining means she has moist tear stains in between the skin folds on her face, which can cause irritated sore skin that can become infected if not carefully cleaned regularly. Her ears had also been plagued by bad cases of yeast and bacterial infections and a radiograph confirmed that both her ear canals had narrowed due to ongoing chronic infections. Her ears would have felt painful and itchy, but to scratch them would make them even more painful. She could still hear but sound would have likely been muffled. With infections this chronic, surgery would often be required to completely remove the ear canals but, luckily for Elsa, we were able to control the infections by thorough cleaning twice a day. This reduced the inflammation allowing the ear canals to open up and meant Elsa didn’t have to undergo another invasive surgery. At present both ears look healthy, but they will need regular cleaning for the rest of her life to ensure infection doesn’t return.
As if that wasn’t enough, poor Elsa also has ongoing problems with her teeth because they are misplaced and squashed, which is typical in French Bulldogs because of their short muzzles. Our vets gave her a full dental when she arrived at Mayhew, but just three months later tartar had built up again on her teeth and this will be a continual issue for her.
Be aware
As shown by Elsa’s case, brachycephalic animals have a special physiology that you should be aware of and Mayhew’s Head Vet Dr Ursula Goetz suggests that if you are thinking of getting a dog
Getting ready for surgery
that belongs to a breed that is brachycephalic, it is very important to do your research first. Most of these dogs will require ongoing medical treatment throughout their lives such as cleaning the teeth and skin folds every day, weekly medicated baths and regular ear cleaning. All of which can be costly, a lot of effort and very time consuming. Elsa’s owner told us that she spends an average of five hours every week making sure the skin folds all over her body (anywhere her skin is touching will be prone to yeast and bacterial infections), teeth and ears are kept healthy and in good condition.
When it comes to exercise, rather than going for one long off-lead walk every day, it is safer to take three shorter off-lead walks as brachycephalic breeds tire easily and find it difficult to breathe due to their short muzzles. Owners must pay close attention while exercising their dog, especially in the heat, as not being able to breathe easily means they cannot regulate their body temperature and this can be life threatening. These breeds often have very fun and exuberant personalities but sadly, their physical issues mean they are not able to be as active as they want to be. Many people think these dogs are lazy or placid but in actual fact, their bodies simply cannot cope with too much exercise and they have to stop and rest. Mayhew is saddened to hear cases every year of brachycephalic dogs dying from heat stroke while out on walks during the summer months due to overexertion. It is important that an owner understands the needs of their pet, monitors their breathing while exercising and takes extra precautions to ensure they don’t overdo it. Please think carefully whether you will be able to care for a brachycephalic pet before getting one, both financially and timewise. Getting a pet is always a big responsibility but these breeds need extra care and you must be fully prepared.

With the royal wedding fresh in our minds and wedding season now upon us, we understand that dog owners might want their beloved pet to be part of their big day, just as they would any other family member. However, there are certain things to bear in mind for this extra special guest. Think about your dog’s personality and whether they will cope with being at the wedding. What are they like when they are with unfamiliar people, in crowds and around children? Are they going to become scared, snap, be stressed or pee on anyone’s dress? A wedding is not a suitable place for all dogs. We strongly advise not to dress up dogs in outfits because they can be too constrictive, cause overheating and make the dog stressed. If you do want to coordinate your pet with your wedding theme why not use a bandana, fancy collar or snazzy lead? Be sure to check that anything attached to the item (like flowers or a bow-tie) isn’t going to come off and end up getting swallowed. Think about the time of year of the wedding and what the weather will be like. If it’s a hot day, make sure your dog won’t be kept out in the sun or make them walk on hot pavements (remember the five second rule: if you can’t hold your hand on the ground for five seconds then it’s too hot for a dog to walk on). However, if it’s a cold day remember to keep your dog out of drafts and keep them dry.
Kelsey is wearing a bandana with bow tie available from www.giddingsgifts.com
Never leave your dog unattended in a car, a cage or anywhere else. Designate a trusted family member, friend or dog sitter to look after them at all times and make sure they have access to water. Try to keep their routine as normal as possible and make sure the person taking care of the dog knows them well, how they react to people, what signs to look out for that they are becoming stressed and will know when it is time for them to leave. Make sure none of your guests are tempted to give your dog a few wedding treats. You don’t want to be clearing up vomit or taking a trip to the vet on your wedding night!
Being an animal lover, I can completely understand when a couple want to involve their dog on their wedding day. However, I know that my dog is a bit special and I would need to carefully consider how he would fit in to a big event like a wedding. The main thing to remember is that you don’t want your dog to be stressed on the big day and you want him to enjoy being there. If you plan things carefully and consider all his needs everything will be perfect – just keep his involvement short and sweet!
Don’t expect too much from your dog or keep them there for the full day as it will be too stressful. Have them pop in for the key moments but make sure they have time for toilet breaks and quiet time away from everyone. Plan where they will be for the rest of the day and how they will get there, whether that is to return home or to be with a dog sitter. Remember not to leave them alone at home for longer than they are used to.
”
Make sure your guests know not to constantly fuss the dog – especially if there will be a lot of children around. Your designated dog handler should know when the dog has had enough and to ask people to give them space.

National Microchipping Month Microchipping is quick, cheap and harmless
This June is National Microchipping Month, and we’re looking at the difference microchipping really does make to pet owners and their four legged best friends.
Since March 2016 it has been a legal requirement to microchip your dog. Though not a legal requirement for cats, we also strongly recommend microchipping them to ensure they are able to be reunited with you should they get lost.

Keeping details up-to-date
As seen in the diagrams above, while the percentage of dogs microchipped has improved, it’s worrying to see the vast majority of dogs with out of date information. Not only is keeping these details up-to-date a crucial factor in owners being reunited with their pets; but not doing so means they could face the same £500 fine as if they didn’t have them microchipped at all. Microchipping your pet is quick, cheap and harmless and can save stress and worry if your cat

or dog goes missing. Owners can have the peace of mind that the probability of them being returned safely is higher than if they are not microchipped and identifiable.
So whether you own a dog or a cat, microchipping is the only way to be sure that should the worst happen and your pet goes missing, you can have the best possible chance to be reunited.

If you’re hesitating to take the plunge, let us put your mind at ease. What is microchipping?
A tiny data chip around the size of a grain of rice is implanted into the dog or cat at the back of the neck. The procedure is similar to giving an injection and is harmless.
Calimero’s story
When Sara went on holiday at the start of this year, she wanted to keep her beloved rescue cat‘s routine as normal as possible. She arranged a cat sitter, and left his cat flap open so he could come and go.
Unfortunately, Calimero went missing and after four agonising months for Sara, a stray cat was brought to Mayhew in April after turning up in a member of the public’s garden in Little Venice and refusing to leave.
When our Animal Welfare Officers scanned the cat for a microchip, they found Sara’s details: it was Calimero! Sara came in straight away to collect him and he’s now happily settled back at home where he belongs. If Calimero wasn’t microchipped and his details were not kept up to date, there’s no guarantee him and Sara would ever have been reunited.
If you’re planning a holiday, make sure your cat is microchipped, your details are up to date, and don’t leave your cat flap open. Whilst keeping them inside during a holiday is not going to do much for their boredom, it is a temporary arrangement and less stressful for them than being in a cattery away from their territory, and far better for them than ending up on the streets lost.
Incorrect microchip details could face the same £500 fine as if they didn’t have them microchipped at all.
How does microchipping work?
The chip holds a unique code that links to a national, 24-hour, secure database where the owner’s contact details are registered. When a missing pet is found, the chip is scanned by an animal professional who contacts the database to find the owner’s details so they can be reunited with their pet. After microchipping does my pet still have to wear a collar?
It is still a legal requirement for your dog to wear a collar and ID tag that states your full name and address. We recommend collars designed to “break off” should it ever get caught on a tree branch or fence. Will it hurt my pet?
Microchipping takes seconds and will only cause your pet to feel a second of shock (much like us getting our ears pierced), and many cats and dogs tolerate it incredibly well.
What is the penalty for not microchipping my dog? If you do not microchip your dog, as the dog owner, you will be served with a notice requiring your dog to be microchipped. You may face criminal prosecution and a £500 fine if you do not comply with the notice. These punishments also apply if you do not keep your microchip up-to-date. How much does microchipping cost?
Microchipping is cheap to do. Our vet and nurse clinics provide a low-cost microchipping service as well as other care treatments for your pet. To find out more and book an appointment, call our Community Vet Clinic on 020 8962 8017.

SUMMER 2018
n your barks, get set, summer!
It’s that time of year again where owners have to think carefully about how to keep their pets healthy and happy in the heat. It’s already on people’s minds: in the week-long April heatwave alone, the RSPCA received 241 concerned calls about dogs suffering. But it doesn’t have to be a scary time. With a bit of planning, there is so much you can do to have fun in the sun with your furry friend.
We turned to Mayhew’s amazing staff and supporters to share their pick of dogfriendly summer plans, from pooch-happy pubs to the best shady walks.

Michelle and her dog Talula: “We’re going to Richmond Park, finding a new route every time!” Radio Host Pandora: “Virginia Water [in Surrey]!! It is incredible, the dogs are allowed in the lakes and they go swimming for miles. It’s surrounded by a big forest and you get lost very easily!” Mayhew’s Reception Coordinator Sue: “We will walk Cassie earlier if it’s very hot, and try to get her to paddle in the ponds on Hampstead Heath – there are loads there that dogs can swim in – but she hates getting wet!” Terie, one of Mayhew’s fantastic volunteers who helps with dog socialising and cat home visits: “I have two lovely dogs, Mastiff cross Tana and Staffie Dolly, and our favourite off lead walk is Gunnersbury Park. On lead has to be Ealing Common!”
Head of Animal Welf are, Zoe Edwards, shares the key thing s to remember whils t you’re having fun wi th your four legged friend this summer. “Lots of dogs love the sun, so keep an eye on them and make sure they have acce ss to shade and wate r all day. Use pet fri endly sun cream on sens itive areas such as the tip of their nose or ears – dogs can ge t sunburnt too!
“Walk your dog ea rly in the morning or late in the evening to av oid the hottest pa rts of the day, and alway s carry water with you. “Brachycephalic do gs (those with shor t, flat faces such as Pu gs or French Bulldog s) are extra susceptib le to heatstroke as they already have a hard er time breathing than other dogs. Keep a close eye on them and watch out for exce ssive panting, droo ling or tiredness – they could all be signs of heatstroke.”
Remember the five second rule
Zoe says, “Hot gr ound can be real ly painful for dogs during summer. This on e is really simple to remem ber though: plac e the back of your hand on the ground, if yo u can’t keep it there co mfortably for fi ve seconds it’s too hot for yo ur dog to walk on !”

Brilliant beaches
AJ, Mayhew’s Deputy Head of Animal Welfare (Community): “I absolutely love taking Barley to the beach during the summer months, he really enjoys running in sands dunes and cooling off in the sea. Rye is a lovely spot close to Camber Sands [East Sussex], where dog friendly beaches are available to exercise your dogs. Barley loves to dig holes in the sand and lay on the wet sand underneath, which is his own natural way of cooling off !” Actress Beatie Edney: “When I’m in Cornwall filming Poldark, Billie (my eight-year-old Mayhew rescue) and I walk everyday on Par beach near St Austell. I love being able to walk the dog on the beach. If we’re in St Ives it’s harder to find beaches that dogs are allowed on but there are some great ones just out of town.”

Pawfect pubs
Singer Rumer: “The best park for dogs in London is Brockwell Park, and Alfie loves The Prince Regent pub, which is right next to it - it’s very dog friendly.” Suzanne and Mayhew rescue Bert love walking the Thames towpath and finding dog friendly pubs along the way. Their favourites include The Blue Boat in Hammersmith and the Duke’s Head in Highgate. We can see Bert feels very at home there!
Radio Host Pandora adds: “The Crabtree Pub in Fulham is great for dogs! They give out free dog treats, which Henry loves obviously, and they have two massive outdoor gardens - one at the back by the water and the other by the side.”
Top treats
Mayhew Animal Welfare Officer Tania and her dog Hooch: “I always have a cold, wet towel on the floor for him to lay on, or to put over his head. I make frozen Kongs and frozen water in ice cream tubs with some treats in there to keep him busy and cool (see the pull-out box on this page for the recipe). And I try to supervise him in the garden as he does like to sunbathe!!” Laura tells us “Our Mayhew dog Jesse [a Saluki cross puppy] loves being in the garden, but for a summer treat, we like a quick game of HOSE! Jesse is very pleased with herself when she catches a spray of water several times over!”
Nicky and Smudge “In the summer, we like to fill a mini paddling pool outside with cold water. Then we throw in a mix of ice cubes, waterproof toys and frozen peas or carrots. It may sound a bit weird, but Smudge loves to bob for peas! It’s a great way to keep her cool.”
How to make a refreshing ice slab treat!
Keep your dog cool and entertained for hours with an easy-to-make frozen treat block. You will need: -
A freezer-safe container box Dog toys Dog treats Water Large dog bowl or rimmed-tray for serving
1. Take your freezer-safe container box. Pop in a few of your dog’s treats and toys in the bottom, cover with water and freeze for 30 minutes. 2. Take the container out of the freezer and add another layer of treats and toys. Cover again with water. 3. Repeat the process for as many layers as you desire. 4. Pop the block in the freezer for a few hours or until it is frozen solid. 5. Take the container out of the freezer and let it thaw for 5-10 minutes. The ice block should then pop right out of the container, if it doesn’t, try running warm water over the bottom. 6. Place the ice block in a large dog bowl or rimmed-tray so it doesn’t melt all over your floor! 7. If your dog is hesitant to lick it, pop a dab of unsalted and sweetener and xylitol-free peanut butter on the top.
We also love filling Kongs with a favourite treat or portion of your dog’s daily food and popping in the freezer for a couple of hours.
Dogs Die In Hot Cars
Mayhew is a proud member of the Dogs Die In Hot Cars campaign group. Zoe, Mayhew’s Head of Animal Welfare, says: “Remember to check your destination is dog friendly before setting off. Temperatures inside a car can soar within minutes: never leave a dog in a car or subject them to long car journeys in the heat. “Sadly, while this is not a new warning, too many pet owners still don’t appreciate how dangerous it is to leave a dog in a car, caravan or conservatory. If you see a dog in a car on a hot day, please call 999 immediately to report this to the police.”

SUMMER 2018
Three deaf kittens‌ see how they play Shelly, a pregnant stray found on the streets, was taken in by our Animal Welfare Officers earlier this year. Brave Shelly gave birth to three beautiful kittens called Indre, Matt (our cover star) and Denise, while in our care. Denise has a small grey spot of fur on her head, but apart from that the three kittens are pure white and were all born deaf.

Deafness and white cats
According to International Cat Care research, deafness is strongly linked to a white coat and blue eyes; but not all white cats or white cats with blue eyes are necessarily deaf.
It’s all to do with one gene, which appears to be responsible for more than one effect: deafness, white coat and also blue eyes. All cats that carry the gene will have a white coat, but it has ‘incomplete penetrance’ when it comes to blue eye colour and for deafness. So while it’s more likely that cats with the gene will have one or both of these characteristics, it’s not a definite. If deafness and blue eyes do occur, this can be in either one or both eyes or ears.
Overall, deaf cats with white coat colour and one or both blue eyes, make up around about 1-1.5% of the total cat population. However, the prevalence of white cats does vary in different geographies – and it is more common among pets, probably due to selective breeding.
Matt and Indre cosy in their kitten cabin
Overall, deaf cats with white coat colour and one or both blue eyes, make up around about 1-1.5% of the total cat population.
If the kittens do venture outside in an enclosed garden to safely play and cause mischief, they will need sunscreen applied to ears and noses as white coated animals are highly prone to skin cancers and need extra sun protection. Thankfully, we were able to care for the three adorable kittens at Mayhew. Had they been born out on the streets and grown up as strays in the urban environment in which they were found, the deaf kittens would likely not have survived for very long. Denise has found her new forever home and Matt and Indre are waiting patiently in our cattery to find theirs.
A bright future
Mum Shelly is still being looked after in our cattery as she developed an unrelated medical problem since her arrival and needs extra care.
At four months old, Indre, Matt and Denise seemed confident and happy, even though they couldn’t hear. While waiting for their forever homes in our cattery, staff would have hours of fun socialising with them and playing with their favourite toys. The kittens may be deaf, but they’re still very vocal and love to purr, meow and call for attention!
Special homes for special kittens
Our Adoption team are looking for extra special homes to ensure that these little kittens live with a family in an especially safe and secure home, as being deaf they are at risk to a wide range of dangers and need to be protected. They must be rehomed in a house or flat where there is no chance of them escaping and if there’s a garden it has to be completely secure. Inquisitive Denise! Can you spot her grey spot?
If you are interested in adopting Matt and Indre, or any of our other animals, please visit www. themayhew.org/adopt or call 020 8962 8000.

SUMMER 2018
The fight against rabies Mayhew’s long-term project to help the city of Kabul, Afghanistan, become rabies free continues to make great progress. Last year, Mayhew Afghanistan signed a landmark agreement with Kabul Municipality to put an end to the dog culling programme in the city. The rabies vaccination project kicked off in August with our team of 12 dog catchers, a VetVaccinator and Surveyor.
I
n February, a second team of dog catchers was taken on and after completing their initial training and receiving their vaccinations, spent time in the field with the original group to learn how to catch dogs humanely. Another driver and two new vetvaccinators also joined the project. The dog catching team has now split into two groups so they can cover more areas and vaccinate more dogs. As of the start of May 2018, over 8,100 dogs have been vaccinated against the disease.
Rabies in numbers
As of 2016, WHO statistics estimate that there have been 1,768 human rabies deaths a year in Afghanistan. Accuracy of data is a challenge as people who have been bitten do not necessarily go to a clinic for treatment and then deaths, which would be attributed to rabies, are not recorded as such. According to data we have had from the Ministry of Public Health recently, 1,789 Kabul residents went to a clinic following a dog bite in 2017. Post prophylaxis treatment for rabies is very expensive, if available at all in Afghanistan, so the risk is very high. Out in the field, our team has caught three suspected rabid dogs so far, all of which have tested positive for the virus. The team has since concentrated their work in the neighbourhoods where those dogs were found and has been raising awareness within the community on what to do if you are concerned about a dog or what to do if bitten.

Dog population
At the beginning of March, our Surveyor, Jawid, and Elham, a final year Vet Student Volunteer, started work on a new Dog Population Survey to compare with the original survey Mayhew carried out in Kabul in 2015. With culling stopped from January 2017, the number of free-roaming dogs may well have changed but this fresh survey will give us the information we need to start the neutering programme. Dr Mohammadzai DVM, Mayhew Afghanistan Director, recently signed a new agreement with the Kabul authorities and the Ministry of Agriculture to formalise the next stage of our long-term strategy for the city, including disease control and humanely reducing the number of free-roaming dogs on the streets.
'Tails' - issue 2 summer*.indd 25
I graduated from Veterinary Faculty of Kabul University in 2017. I am proud to be a veterinarian and that I am a part of Mayhew Afghanistan. I like my job because we are saving both human and animal lives.
On the daily basis we vaccinate free-roaming and owned dogs against rabies. Often the stray dogs need help as they are injured so we clean their wounds and administer an antibiotic shot. Occasionally we come across a dog which is beyond medical help, so the team ends their suffering humanely. Dr Abdul Basit Karimi, Vet-Vaccinator

Helping stray dogs in n
Together with our colleagues at Dog Organisation Georgia (DOG), Mayhew International recently helped 18 stray dogs and puppies living on and around a US marine base in Rustavi, about 45 minutes south of Tbilisi, Georgia. One of the marines, who had been fostering for DOG, reported the litter of puppies. Under the Mayhew-sponsored Trap Vaccinate Neuter Release programme (TVNR), the dogs were brought to New Vet Clinic in Tbilisi, where Mayhew trained vets, Dr Dato Omarashvili and Dr Ana Metskvarishvili, provided general health checks, vaccinations, parasite treatments and neutered several animals.
“
Dato and I are delighted and proud to be helping DOG and Mayhew as it is very important to control the stray population and help animals in need. With DOG, Mayhew and the Free Agrarian University Clinic, we are part of this big plan that needs to be achieved. I am sure one day I will find myself walking in the street proud, as I will be seeing with my own eyes how much we have all contributed.
Over two days, the marines helped bring the dogs into the clinic and transport them back to base, where they will continue to live happily alongside the marines, who are now safe in the knowledge that important steps towards helping to reduce disease among stray dogs and tackling the overpopulation problem have been taken. Whilst the current marine contingent is close to heading home, a new one will arrive soon and pick up the duty of caring for the dogs. Mayhew International and DOG will keep in regular contact with them to assist with any dog questions or issues.
Dr Ana Metskvarishvili, New Vet Clinic, Tbilisi
” 26 I

“
I am grateful that DOG and Mayhew exist because they are primarily thinking about the welfare of the population, and then everything else. I think it is also the only programme in Georgia that provides the complex vaccination against different infectious diseases as well as rabies which is amazing and proves again that it’s for the animals first of all. SUMMER 2018
Hounds on the Heath T
his year, Hounds on the Heath returns for the biggest and best event yet! On Sunday 15 July, hundreds of canines and their companions will be joining Mayhew to celebrate all things four legged.
Held in the beautiful surroundings of Hampstead, Hounds on the Heath offers visitors an array of fun activities to take part in. Test your dog’s will power on Temptation Alley, assess their agility on the course provided by Paws for Thoughts Retreats, or enter them into one of the seven dog show categories where the winner will be crowned Best in Show.
There will also be lots of great stalls to browse for our human guests, as well as prizes and treats to get your hands on in the raffle. After all that, you can round the day off with some delicious vegan treats and a cold drink at the watering hole! Last year, Hounds on the Heath raised an impressive £7,500 to support our work with dogs, cats and communities and with your help this year we want to beat that total! This is the perfect day out for dog lovers and we can’t wait to see you all there.
Could your dog be ‘Best in Show’?

Minikeba Good afternoon,
Minikeba is very relaxed and already treats everything as his own. He plays a lot and enjoys his food. He loves being groomed but, as with everything, he can’t resist playing with the brush.
Since his first night he has been sleeping with us in the bed. He sleeps most of the night and towards the morning we have to mind our feet otherwise they will get ‘attacked’.
Because he is so playful he loves the children’s attention. He uses it as an opportunity to play. Kind regards, Andreea

He does not appear to be dog reactive but we will be checking this out further once he settles.
He knows some basic commands like sit and give paw. Walks very well on the lead.
A patient home is needed for this little boy who has already been let down by so many people in his short life.
This independent chap would like an active home with no other dogs. He is also OK with children over 10 years old.
She is a happy and affectionate girl who is both cat and dog reactive. She needs an active home.

Buster is an older, independent chap, not a cuddly lap dog but a lot of fun.
He is confident out and about, and would love a garden to zoom around in.
He is friendly with everyone he meets, inviting them to play and for a fuss.
Elvis would benefit from a fairly quiet home without many people coming or going to keep him relaxed.

irstly, work out what it is you’d really enjoy doing. That could be an activity such as running, walking or cycling. Or it could be related to baking such as making lots of cakes or even one huge cake. Or perhaps you love crafting and making so want to create lots of new things to share and sell? Work out what you love to do, then do it for the animals you love. Have you been inspired by the World Cup? You could organise a mini World Cup or a five-a-side Tournament which is a fun day for all involved and pulls together a large community of people.

You’ll have to get a trophy for the winning team and arrange for there to be space to playperhaps there is a play area in your community? If you like to push yourself out of your comfort zone, consider abseiling! It isn’t as scary (in our opinion!) as skydiving or paragliding, but will still make people weak at the knees and hopefully willing to donate. Here’s an idea which doesn’t take much space and just needs a bit of muscle – arm wrestling! Arm wrestling competitions can create a fun, and sometimes competitive atmosphere. They may work well in a place with a strong

Craft Making
Get knitting sense of community and also the chance for a beer or two…. Maybe your local pub would host it? You could pitch sports teams against one another, then charge them to compete and prove their team is the best. Most of us love to read, and many of us have a few books we have finished with. How about a book sale? Ask your local school, the parents of the children, your family, your neighbours and friends to donate really good books that they no longer read but work out a really good way to sell them. Perhaps you could create an evening or afternoon when people arrive, choose a book to buy from the sale copies then also buy some cake and tea and then sit and read for an hour…. Like a sponsored silence but with cake! This would also be a chance for some people just to take some time out, or you could make it an event for children to enjoy. Just make sure you have plenty of comfy places for people to sit. How about a charity car wash? You need some space and access to water. You might
Dance all night!
Cake Making need to make it more fun, though. How about you and your fellow car washers dress up? Imagine advertising that for a fiver you could get your car washed Elvis, the Bee Gees or the Royal Family! Your local newspaper might be tempted to send a photographer! Once you’ve got a great idea, think about how you share your fundraising fun in advance so you get as much support as possible. Don’t forget that whilst you can do it in person (sell cakes at a coffee morning for example) you can also use social media to help spread the word and the Just Giving website to collect online donations. Remember to take loads of photo to share online afterwards so you can ask for donations afterwards. If you are really savvy with online social media, perhaps you could do a sponsored head shave, silence or even that abseiling challenge using live streams. Good luck, and above all HAVE FUN! www.rescueandanimalcare.com

Lucy Donkey Foundation In 2015 Lucy Fensom, an English lady, set up a donkey sanctuary in Israel. At the 4 acre site, Lucy is totally committed and dedicated to rescuing over-worked donkeys from a life of neglect, abuse, even torture, like poor Zachariah. He was found distressed and in pain, he’d had both of his eyes deliberately gouged out. With patience and care, he is now adjusting to a life of blindness but in a safe and secure environment. Or recently rescued Michael. He was found tied up with terrible large open sores on his back. These open wounds were probably due to a badly fitting harness constantly rubbing as he worked. By the time Lucy found him, infection had set in and the wound was infested with maggots. Following urgent, intensive medication, Michael has responded well to treatment. Lucy and her team are often called out at all times of the day or night to deal with emergencies and casualties, like the poorly horse that had been simply left to die in a ditch by its owner. Sadly, he could not be saved. Sometimes donkeys are brought to the sanctuary by concerned citizens. A couple brought Saki, an older donkey to the sanctuary in their van during the night since they had found him wandering dangerously close to a busy road and no one else would respond to their appeal for help. Naturally, Lucy took him in. Esther, another elderly donkey, was standing in the middle of a busy motorway and the police had to partially close this until Lucy arrived to take her away before an accident occurred. As part of her work, Lucy makes every effort to help educate the donkey owners by showing them better handling methods, including correct harnessing, hoof care, dentistry and feeding in the hope that this in turn will improve their livelihood. If you would like to read more stories and help Lucy continue with her work by making a donation, however small, please go online
Tractor Appeal Lucy and the volunteers are struggling at the 4 acre sanctuary in Israel with the heavy manual work without the use of a tractor for digging, scraping, spreading sand and lifting/moving heavy hay bales. Kittens on camera: adorable ‘Kittenhood’ winners announced
Overall winners kitten siblings Mocha and Cappuccino
International Cat Care (iCatCare) is delighted to announce the twelve stunning winners of its annual photography competition. Each year iCatCare runs the competition to celebrate fantastic images of felines, the winners of which feature in the charity’s 2019 fundraising calendar. This year’s competition was looking for images specifically of kittens. Eve Davies, iCatCare’s Digital Communications Officer who organised the competition said: ‘With the theme of ‘Kittenhood’, we were looking for images of gorgeous newborns and curious kittens – whether they were snoozing, playing or just looking irresistibly cute – and we were not disappointed! The response we received was fantastic, with nearly 3,000 images sent in from photographers in over 60 counwww.rescueandanimalcare.com
tries. We then had the incredibly tough task of choosing just twelve winning images to feature in the 2019 charity calendar.’ After much deliberation, the twelve winning photographs were chosen. Congratulations go to the following photographers: Sabine Schmidt (Germany), Delila Maslo (Bosnia and Herzegovina), Rachel Philip (UK), John Foreman (UK), Catan Ngan (Hong Kong), Claire Mowforth (UK), Rachel Hunter (UK), Vivian Harding (Canada), Lindsey Chadwick (UK) and Sara
Grant (UK). The overall winner is Lindsey Chadwick from the UK, for her adorable image of kitten siblings Mocha and Cappuccino, which unanimously captured the hearts of the competition judges. Lindsey will receive £500 in prize money and her image will grace the cover of iCatCare’s 2019 calendar, which will be sold to raise funds for the charity. As there were so many amazing entries, a public vote was opened for a 13th winner to be chosen,
whose image will feature alongside the dates for 2020 at the end of the calendar. The winner of this was Francesca Barbero from Italy. To view all of the winning images and to find out more about the stories behind them, visit: http://www.icatcare.org/photography-competition/2018. The iCatCare 2019 ‘Kittenhood’ calendar is available for pre-order at the special price of £5.00 (RRP £7.50) from: https://icatcare.org/shop.

Supplying Catteries and Kennels for over 40 years
Manufacturing Catteries is what we do We don’t build sheds, or garden furniture, we design and build premium bespoke living accommodation for cats. This is a new era for animal housing. Expectations have risen dramatically over the last 5 years meaning customers want larger, lighter, luxurious living spaces for their beloved animals and what better way to ease the wave of guilt you might feel when leaving home watched by two large, sad eyes, than to know your furry friend will be enjoying five star luxury in your absence. Each individual cat house or run is made from scratch by the team of expert joiners in our factory near Bristol. Some weeks we are busy manufacturing enormous 30 pen catteries ready to be delivered and installed in Scotland, other days we will be putting together a bespoke garden run for a cat lover a couple of miles away. Whatever we are doing, we are doing it with the love, care and attention to detail that people have come to know and expect from a Lindee Lu building.
Whether you foster, breed or have been thinking about running a little business from home with a boarding cattery, we are here to help you make your dreams a reality. Why not give us a call for a chat? We don’t hard sell, we don’t insist you buy a minimum number of pens and it doesn’t matter how large or small your project is. Hi there, our names are Basil and Margo and we are a mixed pair looking for a home. I, Margo, am a Black Maran x and I came in because my owner could no longer keep me. We are looking for a new home together and could go to live with other hens.
I'm quite a character, so if you have hens and would like a handsome addition to your flock.
As we are very intelligent so we could be taught to speak, whistle and play with humans.
I am looking for a home where I can settle at my own pace and enjoy some free flying time indoors.

Nothing pleases Neil more than spending a quiet evening in, sharing his corn with a beautiful hen.
He is very active and especially loves to look at himself in his mirror.
Rowntree can be a little wary of human friends but enjoys chirping away to the other birds in the room and along to the radio.

As he can be quite shy and timid at times, Meowson would benefit from a quieter home in a rural area as he has very little road sense.
She is a loveable, affectionate girl who adores a good fuss and loves a head rub. She can be very vocal when she greets you.
Sid would benefit from a quiet home where any children in the house are 10 years or older and are used to having a feline friend.
She is now ready to find her forever home where she can be spoilt rotten and loved no end.
Cheeky little Onyx and his adorable sister Opal came into the centre with their mum as their previous owner could no longer care for them. They are a very active duo, as you can imagine with their age, and are always on the go looking for new adventures and places to explore. Onyx is more confident with people than his sister.
He is such a sweet boy who sometimes struggles to adapt to new surroundings.
Would definitely benefit from a nice big garden and a rural location so he can go on his own little adventures if he needs alone time.

Why Cornwall is the ultimate doggy holiday Us Brits now spend nearly 4.62 billion pounds on our dogs and with the summer nearly upon us, many want to be able to take our four-legged friends on holiday with us. For all the information you need before you head off, The Beach House Company has you covered. We’ve round up the best dog-friendly holiday attractions in Cornwall, so you know about the experiences you and your furry friend can both enjoy! By Rebecca Jackson, Marketing Manager, The Beach House Company
Before you go Cornwall is bursting with dog-friendly properties, but be sure to check pets are allowed when booking your own accommodation to avoid any unpleasant surprises. If travelling by car, check your pet is properly secured, as a loose animal can be distracting to a driver. If you have room in the boot, install either a cage or a rigid dog guard. If your dog can’t go in the boot, they will need to travel on the back seat, restrained by a harness that clips onto one of the rear seat belts. Start your journey early morning or evening, so you’re travelling during the cooler times of the day. Stop for regular breaks to allow your dog to stretch its legs and go to the toilet and keep your furry friend hydrated with lots of water breaks during the journey. www.rescueandanimalcare.com
Packing for the pooch You’ll need to remember your dog’s holiday essentials as well as your own! Don’t forget the basics like leads, toys, plenty of biodegradable waste bags for when they do their business and a water and food bowl. If the weather is going to be nice, pack canine sun-cream – yes dogs also need to be sun safe too - and research the local emergency vet’s number, should the worst happen.
Life’s a beach Luckily for us dog lovers, most of Cornwall’s beaches are dog-friendly. However, you will need to check if there are any seasonal restrictions, especially during peak holiday times. Remember to take plenty of biodegradable waste bags, as a combination of heat and drinking seawater may result in your dog going to the toilet more frequently than normal. Have fresh water with you and try to restrict your dog drinking sea water. Watch out for hidden dangers such as sharp shells,
fishing hooks and jellyfish your dog could eat or injure itself on.
Keep hunger at bay You’ll be spoiled for choice when looking for places to eat and drink in Cornwall. Whether you fancy fresh-from-the harbour seafood, indulgent Cornish Cream Teas or one of the infamous Cornish pasties, there’s something for everyone, including your canine companion. The locations of some restaurants are just as special as the food. St Ives, which is known as the jewel of Cornwall’s crown, is bursting with cafés and restaurants that welcome dogs. Further north, you can even find delicious dog-friendly ice cream in Perranporth and Padstow. For the perfect spot to unwind after an afternoon walk along the Cornish coast, visit Wet Dog Pizza in Newquay for pizza, beer and wine for you and your canine companion.
Cornish charms When beaches become too hot and crowded, why not walk the ‘A twirl of the Cape’, which passes through parts of the Corning Mining World Heritage Site and offers great views outward towards The Brisons and the Longships Lighthouse. Past the Cape, you reach Priests Cove where a natural swimming pool at low tide provides a safe area for wave-shy doggy paddles. Or take a trip to out to the Isles of Scilly to see the Tresco Abbey Gardens, home to 20,000 exotic plants from 80 countries and the Golita Falls, a series of spectacular cascades and waterfalls along a section of the River Fowey. n For more information visit www.thebeachhousecompany.co.uk
