One of my New Year’s Resolutions will be not to attack the hoover! Hello you gorgeous Furry and Feathered Friends!

I am so excited as it is nearly Christmas and I can’t wait to open all my presents. Although, having said that I am a bit worried at the moment because usually by now I have found the stash of gifts that Mistress hides in places she thinks I will never discover. Last year I found a new ball hidden up her jumper sleeve, a bag of treats in her Cornflakes box and a new squeaky Piggy Toy in one of her welly boots. I have even looked in the toilet cistern but nothing! Of course, this is very naughty of me but Little Mistress does the same as me and I just follow her lead. I think Mistress has got wise to us searching for our presents and found somewhere super clever to hide them this year! A big thank you to the lovely Peta at CI Dog Food (cifood.co.uk) for yet another delivery of my grain free food from the Tickety Boo Range but especially for my STOCKING!!!!! Mistress has given me strict instructions not to open it until Christmas Morning. To help me contain myself from having a peep, Peta has included this adorable toy to keep me amused in the meantime. See me here having fun with it. It is a Hoot! One of my New Year’s Resolutions will be not to attack the hoover! The other day I got particularly aggressive with it while Mistress was hoovering and I bashed my nose on it. Now it is sore and red and hurts a bit. I am hoping it will feel better soon otherwise it will be a trip to the vets. In 2022 I am going to try and be kinder to everyone but especially to the wee sausage dog I growl at in the park and to do my poos all in one spot instead of spreading them about. I think if I stand still to do my

My new toy! toilet instead of continuing to walk on the job this should do the trick. Other than that I will be kinder and more thoughtful to Mistress and when she is weary lick her big toes more often. I hope you all have a Wonderful Christmas Time.

Former stray Caffrey looking for best birthday present a rescue dog could wish for – a new home to call his own Dogs Trust West London is appealing for a new home for a former stray dog who’d love a family to call his own in time for his birthday.

15 tips to keep animals safe in the cold As temperatures plummet and with snow forecast, the RSPCA issues its top tips to keep pets, livestock and wildlife happy and healthy this winter

t’s not clear whether we’ll get a white Christmas but with temperatures plummeting, now is the time to take simple steps to keep our pets and wildlife safe this winter. With temperatures dropping below freezing and winter’s first frosts and snows forecast across the country, the RSPCA is urging people to do their bit to help animals. RSPCA pet welfare specialist Dr Sam Gaines said: “It’s really important we help our animal friends get through the chilly weather and we’ve got lots of helpful advice and tips available for people to make sure their own pets, and local wildlife, are kept safe.” Adam Grogan, head of wildlife at the RSPCA, said: “As the weather turns colder it is important to think about how we can ‘join the winter rescue’ and help our animal friends. A few little changes to your everyday routine can really make a difference to animals. For example, a little bit of extra food left out for a hungry bird may be the help it needs to last through a spate of frosty weather.”

Here are our top tips: 1. Keep a close eye on outdoor pets like rabbits and guinea pigs; if the temperature starts to drop below freezing, you may wish to move your bunny inside. We recommend guinea pigs are housed indoors when temperatures are below 15OC. If you do bring your pets indoors, they still need plenty of time and room to exercise safely. If you have to leave them outside, provide them with lots of extra bedding and make sure their home is protected from adverse weather with insulating but ventilating covers. Hutches should be in a sheltered position, with a sloped roof and should be raised off the ground at least 4ins. 2. Ensure cats have constant access to the house or to a warm, indoor area such as an outbuilding or barn. You should also ensure the cat’s bedding or sleeping area is warm, dry and away from any draughts. www.rescueandanimalcare.com

10. If you have a fish pond, check it every day to make sure the surface is not entirely frozen as poisonous gases can build up under the ice. Don’t break the ice as this can harm the fish, but carefully place a saucepan of hot water on the surface to gently melt a hole in the ice. Never tip boiling water straight onto the pond either, as this can also harm or kill any fish living there. And never try to use antifreeze or salt to thaw frozen ponds or birdbaths. 11. Horses and livestock need extra care in the winter, such as adequate shelter to escape bad weather, extra feed as grass can be sparse, and regular checks on water troughs to keep them clear of ice. Give added protection with a waterproof rug, ensure they have access to dry standing areas, and check hooves regularly for loose shoes or signs of problems such as mud fever. Farmers and smallholders should give extra consideration to young animals and whether they need extra protection from the cold weather. 3. Antifreeze and rock salt can be poisonous to pets so keep any stored products out of their reach. If you’re concerned your pet may have ingested anything they shouldn’t, please speak to your vet immediately. 4. If you have a pet who gets wet or cold, rub them dry with a towel and make sure they have plenty of warm bedding. 5. If you have an elderly or sickly dog, you can buy a special coat or jumper to keep them warm when you’re out walking. Make sure your dog can still behave normally, for example, go to the toilet easily and that it is a good and comfortable fit. 6. When walking your dog in the dark or riding your horse, wear reflective clothing and think about reflective protection for your pet too! 7. Keep your pet dog away from frozen ponds, lakes or rivers which can pose a danger, and make sure their paws don’t get impacted with snow. 8. If you keep pet birds in aviaries, coops, or runs, then you should also protect them from the cold weather. Provide plenty of additional dry, warm bedding such as straw and cover enclosures to keep the wind and rain out. Birds will eat more to keep warm in cold conditions so ensure the birds always have access to plenty of food and fresh water, ensuring water does not freeze over. 9. Never house animals, including birds, in greenhouses and take caution if housing them in conservatories. www.rescueandanimalcare.com

12. Wildlife may need an extra helping hand during tough, winter conditions. Birds can struggle to find food during the winter months so, to help them stay strong over this period, householders can leave out extra food for them (like suitable seeds and grains such as oats and sunflower seeds; cooked pasta or rice; boiled potatoes, cheese, or uncooked unsalted bacon rind; raisins and sultanas; net-free fat or suet balls; apples, pears and soft fruits; insects such as mealworms or waxworms). 13. Keep bird baths free of ice, leave out bowls of clean water, and keep feeders clean. 14. Carefully check any wood or leaf piles for wild animals such as hedgehogs, frogs and mice before lighting any fires or bonfires. If you find wild animals in hibernation, be sure to leave them be. 15. We don’t advise keeping dogs outside in any weather. Meeting the needs of dogs when they’re kept outside is very hard - and more so in very low temperatures. Neglected elderly dog abandoned days before Christmas makes incredible transformation Ten-year-old Molly-Moo has ﬁnally found happiness with her new best friend An elderly dog had almost given up on life when she was abandoned on the cold streets of Birmingham just days before Christmas.

en-year-old German Shepherd cross mastiff was in a pitiful state when she was found wandering in Harborne on 20 December last year. West Midlands Police found her and managed to catch her and take her to the RSPCA. Inspector Stephen Lee, who launched an investigation, said: “Poor Molly-Moo was in such a sorry state and looked so sad; when you looked in her eyes she seemed broken, like she’d given up hope. It was devastating. “Molly was wandering along a busy, dangerous road and I believe she’d been dumped there by someone like rubbish. She was incredibly emaciated with bones protruding and had a bad, untreated skin condition.” Molly was chipped and officers

managed to trace her original owners but it turned out she’d been stolen from their garden six years earlier and they were now unable to take her back. She was taken into the RSPCA’s Birmingham Animal Hospital for treatment and TLC. She was put on a special diet to help her put on weight and vets started to treat her skin condition. She spent six months with the staff rehabilitating and recovering until staff felt she was ready to find a loving new home. It didn’t take long for fabricator welder John Bebbington (55) from Leicester and his wife, Joanne, and 15-year-old stepson, Harry, to spot her photo online and fall in love. John said: “We lost our Staffie after 13

years together and we weren’t really looking for another dog but, one day, we came across Molly-Moo’s photo online and we were all smitten. Her face just looked so sad and her story was heartbreaking. I’m glad she can’t talk because I don’t think I could face hearing what she’s been through. Our previous dog had 13 years of bliss and we felt we wanted to give Molly a good end of life.” The family adopted Molly-Moo in June and said she was initially quite nervous and confused. John said: “There was a lot of anxiety initially; she’d cry and manically look everywhere when we were out and about. I could tell she was anxious and frightened. there were chunks of fur coming off all over the house. “It was a hell of an undertaking; we had to bathe her everyday and keep on top of her medication. We had to shampoo her, clean her ears and clean up after her as all of her scabs fell off and her fur came out. There were times when we thought: ‘What have we done?’ But then we remember what someone had done to her and how she deserved a happy and healthy life. “Now, she’s like a totally different dog. Her fur has grown back and her ears have healed; her skin is soft. She’s also much happier in herself. We can let her off the lead and she toddles around the park socialising with other dogs. She’s really turned a corner and is very happy, sweet-natured and well-behaved. “She’s an older girl but it doesn’t stop her bounding around through the grass; it’s an absolute joy to see. She never goes far though; she won’t leave my side. I’ve definitely found a best friend for life; and she has too!” This Christmas will be a far cry from how the old pooch spent her last Christmas, in RSPCA care surrounded by love but still skinny, itchy, frightened and confused. This year, she’ll know what it

Allergic to Christmas!! After the restrictions associated with Coronavirus, I have no doubt we are all looking forward to celebrating Christmas with family and friends this year. However, if your visitors are allergic to your pets, the visits can turn into a nightmare! Mary Lloyd Incidence of Pet Allergies

It is estimated that around 26% of the population are allergic to pets. Allergic reactions to cats are the most common but the reactions to dogs can be more severe. Contrary to popular opinion, the reactions are not caused by dander but the particles that come from the saliva when the pets clean themselves. These tiny, microscopic particles rapidly become airborne and travel throughout the house. Birds and small furry pets can equally generate the response. 18

Neglected Lurcher pups thrown from car in London Playful three-month-olds Wendy and Wilson being cared for by Dogs Trust Two Lurcher puppies who are visually and hearing impaired are being cared for by Dogs Trust after being neglected and reportedly thrown from the window of a car.

endy (above) and Wilson (above) were brought into Dogs Trust West London Rehoming Centre by a witness to the incident close to the centre last month. The pair, who are believed to be siblings, were both severely dehydrated and underweight when they were found. They are now being looked after by the centre’s ‘Home from Home’ foster carers who are giving them all the TLC they need. thrown from a car window and rescued by a witness who saw what happened. “They brought them straight to us here at the centre where we had them immediately checked over by a vet who found that, luckily, they weren’t seriously injured. However, they were in very poor condition from being dehydrated and severely underweight. They were taken to the overnight vets for rehydration and further veterinary care. It was also discovered that the puppies had been born with a congenital abnormality leading to each of them having a hearing or visual impairment.” The puppies are thought to be three months old. Fortunately, their visual and hearing impairments haven’t stopped them having a zest for life and developing into very playful puppies who are now looking for understanding and dedicated forever homes, suitable to their needs.

The benefits of adopting a cat when you have children

It’s definitely possible to adopt a cat with young children at home, although it will require extra consideration as balancing the needs of a new pet and small children can be a challenge. As well as selecting the right cat for your home and lifestyle, you should also consider the age of the cat you’re interested in adopting. It can be tempting to pick a kitten, but kittens and children aren’t always the best mix. Kittens need training, lots of care, and are still learning how to use their claws which makes them more likely to play rough. They’re also not the best cats for toddlers. Young children can be loud and unpredictable, and they don’t yet understand that fluffy little kittens are not soft toys. Instead, you might prefer to choose a slightly older, calmer cat who can better tolerate young children at home. Cats and kittens need predictability, consistency and choice. • Bring home something familiar – If you can, take some of your new cat’s bedding home, as a familiar scent can help them feel more secure • Create a sanctuary in your home – Start slow by keeping your new cat in a separate room with the door closed, with everything they need in one place to allow them to adjust slowly at their own pace • Consider using pheromones – A Feliway diffuser can be helpful in creating a secure environment for cats so it’s useful to have one in the sanctuary room such as FELIWAY® Optimum or FELIWAY® Classic • Share your smell – Give them a piece of your clothing to help them get used to your smell • Give them space – One of the best things you can do is give your cat time and space, let them explore in their own time and approach you when they feel comfortable. Cats need to get used to their sanctuary room first before meeting any family members It is normal for new cats to feel stressed by the change of being in a new home and it may take some time for them to settle. Creating a safe space for your cat

No matter how confident and energetic your cat may be, all cats need peaceful spaces to eat, sleep and get some much-needed rest. Your cat should have a safe space, ideally in a quiet part of your home, to go to when they need some time alone. Your cat’s bed and food should be placed away from the busy communal areas of your home, such as the living room or the hallway. If you have very young children who don’t yet understand how important it is for your cat to rest, you could install a baby gate to create a ‘child-free’ space and prevent children wandering in. It’s a good idea to keep your cat’s litterbox somewhere out of the way. This provides a safe space for your cat to use the bathroom, preventing accidents, as well as stopping children from messing with the contents of the tray, which could make them ill. Cats love having access to high areas, as it allows them to observe family life but create much-needed space. Adding furniture such as tall cat trees, or even cat shelves, is not just a great place to rest, it also provides your cat a place to sleep far away from grabby hands. Cat shelves in particular can be used effectively to create little cat highways on the wall. This could help them to get from one room to another for example, without having to walk on the floor, and is especially useful in busy areas. Cats Protection welcomes debates on pet travel to make sure cats are not left behind The UK’s largest cat charity has welcomed two parliamentary debates which will raise concerns that cats are being left behind in changes to laws around pet travel.

ats Protection says proposals in a Government consultation on the movement of pets into Great Britain would fail to protect cats and kittens in the same way as puppies and dogs. The Government consultation, which closed in October, contained important proposed changes to dog travel – including increasing the minimum age they can travel and banning the movement of heavily pregnant dogs – but fails to extend the same protections to cats. Cats Protection is now calling on the Government to increase the minimum age that cats can travel into Great Britain from 15 weeks to six months, ban the movement into the UK of pregnant cats in their last 42 days of gestation and ban the importation of cats which have been de-clawed. With Cats Protection’s Cats and Their Stats (CATS) report 2021 estimating that 70,000 cats acquired between March 2020 and March 2021 were

from an overseas source, the charity says action is needed to prevent kittens and cats being exploited by unscrupulous international traders. Cats Protection’s Head of Advocacy & Government Relations Jacqui Cuff said: “While the Government is looking at changes to improve the welfare of puppies and dogs being brought into the UK, it is not considering the same improvements for cats, which is a huge concern. “We know there has been an increase in the numbers of people looking to buy a kitten, and prices have also gone up. The current laws on importing kittens and cats are far too relaxed and urgently need to be tightened up to prevent a surge in unscrupulous traders importing kittens into Great Britain for onward sale.” Lord Black of Brentwood, who will be raising the issue in an oral question in the House of Lords said: “Over the years I have been an advocate for the welfare of our companion animals. We are a

nation of animal lovers and pets are so important to the lives of many, an important part of the family, and providers of joy and companionship. “There are risks in buying pets online, particularly from sellers based abroad, and the Government’s review of the pet travel provisions presents a real opportunity to clamp down on unscrupulous sellers smuggling pets into Great Britain. While the horrors of puppy smuggling are well publicised, we must not open the door to sellers turning their attention to bringing in kittens to meet the UK market. Big boy Basher seeks home for Christmas Gentle giant Basher measures in at almost 6ft tall when he stands up on his back legs and weighs a hefty 60kg!

gentle giant is facing his second Christmas in RSPCA kennels as potential adopters are put off by his size. Two-year-old mastiff Basher weighs 60kg and measures in at almost 6ft tall when he stands up on his hind legs making him taller than lots of the staff looking after him! Basher arrived at The William & Patricia Venton Animal Centre, in Cornwall, in July having spent a number of months at a number of other RSPCA centres looking, but failing, to find a home. Helen Jones, animal centre manager at RSPCA Cornwall, said: “Basher was rescued in January 2020 so has spent almost two years waiting to find his forever home. Now, this lovely lad is facing his second Christmas in kennels and we’re desperate to make all of his Christmas wishes come true and find him the paw-fect home. “He is a big boy but is a true gentle giant. He is a lovely, soppy boy who absolutely adores cuddles and doesn’t always remember his size; especially 26

when he’s trying to sit in your lap! He is such a sweet lad with the most wonderful temperament so we think possible adopters are being put off by his sheer size. “We’re looking for an owner who has experience with large, mastiff types and knows that these dogs can be rather clumsy and messy around the house, and won’t be bothered by all of the slobber! “He has a history of chewing sofas so will need someone who can be around for most of the time, initially, to help him settle in and learn that it’s okay being home alone after spending so long in kennels.” Basher walks nicely on the lead but can be strong and gets over-excited when he sees birds! The centre’s behaviourist is willing to help new owners with Basher as he settles into his new home to ensure he doesn’t end up back in our care. He would be best-suited to an adult-only home where there are no cats and he’ll be the only dog. “Basher is such a wonderful lad who

will be such a fabulous addition to the right family,” Helen added. “It is important that any potential adopters consider what sort of dog - including their size - will suit their lifestyle. “While all dogs are individuals, there are some specific considerations that come with owning dogs that are particularly large. It’s important to do your research before taking on any dog, as well as thinking of the day-to-day care that dog will need. End of life, we know it will happen As much as we would prefer to ignore the trauma of an end-of-life situation, we know it will be something we will go through. I wouldn’t recommend that this becomes a regular subject of conversation but some thought and some planning is always a sensible and strangely comforting thing to do.

aybe you will discuss whether to let your pet die naturally at home or taking them to the vet’s clinic for a planned euthanasia? The decisions you make will be personal and based on the health of your pet and their quality of life. My German Shepherd does not like visiting the vet, (luckily she has not had to do it often) but when she does, the anxiety is obvious and distressing, she looses hair becomes nervous and generally stressed. In an on-line survey arranged by Cloud 9 Vets over 90% of respondents would prefer to organise a home euthanasia. This means avoiding potential pain and risk for clinic anxiety, in other words a peaceful, controlled and stressless passing in the safe environment of your own home.

• Don’t push things too far, in an end of life situation remember the sentiment that “a week too early is so much better than a day too late”. • Don’t blame yourself, considering euthanasia is something you do as an act of love for your pet, to save them from pain and distress. • Don’t let other people make the decision for you, you know your pet best. • Don’t forget about aftercare, do you want to bury at home? Or perhaps organise an individual cremation with the ashes returned in an urn?

Time is always a factor

When it is time, you will likely know as an owner, after all you know your pet better than anyone else. They often send us subtle signals, maybe they are hiding away, maybe they just look at you in ”that” way, asking for some help if their quality of life is not what they or you would want it to be. Don’t feel guilty, those who contemplate putting their elderly or sick pet to sleep do it through love, nothing else. Make sure you say a proper goodbye before the vet’s appointment, there will also be time after you meet the vet, but you may want those few private moments, before the vet arrives. A gentle-euthanasia needs time, do not be rushed, make sure you can go through the process carefully and calmly, without being hurried or too focused on the clock. Be clear with the vet, how much, or little do you

want to know about the process? Make sure you get the closeness and compassion you and your pet need. Even in times of Corona this should still be possible, ask before, because it is too late afterwards. All of these decisions are personal. Should I order an individual or communal cremation, a burial at home? There is not a “right” decision, just a decision, that is right for you and your family. We don’t talk about end-of-life do we? Well we just did! And planning what to do, in good time, makes the process, gentle and dignified, making sure that you celebrate the wonderful life of your pet rather than just mourn their passing. Most cats are, by nature, inclined to roam the area surrounding their home. You're likely to come across a stray cat on your travels, although it might be tricky to find out whether it is a stray cat, a feral or is in fact an owned cat with a sense of adventure. So what should you do if you've found a cat?

Five things to do with a found cat

1. Avoid feeding it unless it is particularly underweight - this will only encourage the cat to come back, even if it has an owner! 2. Call your local animal shelter or organisation - find your local Cats Protection 3. List the cat on your local community Facebook page or put up posters 4. Report abandoned or pets to the RSPCA 5. If the cat doesn't have an owner, contact your local Cats Protection and we'll find the cat a home

How do I know if the cat is feral, stray or an owned cat?

Before you do anything, it is important to think about whether the cat you've found is a stray, a feral or an owned cat. If they appear well-groomed and is a healthy weight, they may have an owner nearby. Ferals behave like wild animals and won't come close, even 42

What to do if you find a pregnant cat

Think you’ve found a pregnant cat or a cat with kittens and wondering what to do next? Follow our step-by-step guide. • Check the cat’s tummy, carefully and without startling them (or touching their tummy) – if the mammary glands appear more prominent, the cat may be still nursing her young • Take the cat to the vet by safely wrapping them in a blanket or putting them in a cardboard box. The vet will be able to scan for a microchip, which is vital in locating an owner and may also lead to finding the location of any kittens • If safe to do so, go back to the area where the cat was found and have a look around the area for any signs of kittens. Check under bushes and shrubs, and listen out for their cries • If you’re unsuccessful in locating an owner and kittens, you might want to put up posters locally and post on social media letting people know that there may be a litter of kittens somewhere. Yorkshire donkey with overgrown and twisted hooves is rescued A donkey, whose hooves were so overgrown they had twisted, is now on his journey to recovery, thanks to international animal welfare charity, The Donkey Sanctuary.

ollowing a call from a concerned member of the public in March 2021, Donkey Welfare Adviser Adele Crompton arrived at an address near Huddersfield in West Yorkshire, where she discovered the nine-year-old donkey called Puzzle, suffering with extremely overgrown hooves. Puzzle lived with two other donkeys named Quiz and Wizard, who were also suffering from long overgrown hooves. They were living in a muddy paddock, surrounded by broken fencing and barbed wire. The neglected donkeys were cold and wet due to the lack of adequate shelter, and the Donkey Welfare Adviser could see that they all need urgent veterinary and farriery care. Adele Crompton said: “The first thing I noticed was the state of Puzzle’s feet. I could not believe how he was moving around with such overgrown and twisted hooves. “They had grown so long, especially his hind feet. I noticed when he was moving, he was walking on the backs of his heels. “Quiz and Wizard’s hooves were also in poor condition. Wizard had a big chunk of her hoof missing and the hoof looked deformed. “Quiz’s front feet were starting to twist inwards, and he appeared to be in discomfort when standing. “I knew we needed to intervene quickly to get the donkeys the pain relief and treatment they so desperately needed.”

It was clear that the donkeys, had been suffering for some time for their feet to be so overgrown and that all three needed urgent veterinary and farriery treatment. Donkeys require regular farrier care to ensure their hooves are kept in good condition. They also need access to adequate shelter to protect them from the elements, as their coats are not water resistant, like those of horses. Once Adele had assessed the health and welfare of each donkey from outside their paddock, she enlisted the help of the RSPCA to make contact with their owner. The Covid-19 pandemic had affected the owner’s circumstances, and other priorities meant they had only been able to only provide the donkeys with food and water. It was agreed that it was in the best interest of the animals to relinquish them into the care of The Donkey Sanctuary. The donkeys were transported to one of the charity’s holding bases, where they were provided with a warm, dry shelter, nutritious food and much-needed veterinary and farriery attention. Adele Crompton said: “Despite all they had been through, two-year-olds Quiz and Wizard were still so trusting and friendly, whereas Puzzle was a little nervous.” “This case underlines the importance of seeking help as early as possible. the importance of good welfare and look into potential solutions.” The charity has a team of Donkey Welfare Advisers across the country, who are on hand to provide free guidance to donkey owners and to support donkeys in critical need of help. The donkeys’ condition has since improved, but it will be a long journey until they are fully recovered. A spokesperson for the holding base said: “Puzzle, Quiz and Wizard are doing very well and have become interested in their surroundings and are keen to interact with people. “Since their feet have undergone farriery treatment, their characters are really shining through. Quiz has a heart of gold and is very gentle and patient with the grooms. “All three donkeys certainly seem happier in themselves, and their feet are looking in much better shape. “However, they still have a long way to go. Puzzle’s and Quiz’s hooves were very deformed, so it will take time for them to fully recover. “They are still building confidence around humans, but with a lot of love and care, we are hopeful they will start to trust us more and begin to enjoy life to the fullest.” The three donkeys now have a safe home for life in the care of The Donkey Sanctuary, either in one of its sanctuaries or a private home through its Rehoming Scheme. n The Donkey Sanctuary is a global leader for equine welfare, research and veterinary care. New Redwings animation urges support for rescued ponies this Christmas Redwings Horse Sanctuary has launched its latest fundraising animation, voiced once again by Stephen Fry.

ast year, the charity released a short animation narrated by the popular broadcaster telling the story of a long-term Sanctuary resident, blind Clydesdale horse Boo, which went on to be viewed by over 225,000 people online. This year’s animation takes supporters back to the beginnings of Redwings in 1984 and how it has transformed into a national charity caring for more than 1,500 rescued horses and donkeys at its sites every day. Along the way, viewers will meet some of Redwings’ adorable residents who the Sanctuary has rescued and given a loving home to over the years.

Q&A with Nick Jones and Brian Faulkner We asked two experts, Dr Brian Faulkner, veterinary surgeon and Nick Jones, dog behaviourist and dog expert witness, for some additional information on how to choose the right dog. Q: Why is it important to think about the type of dog to get depending on what type of home you have?

Nick Jones: Even some of the larger breeds can cope in a smaller home, but this will place a greater emphasis upon getting out of the home each day and into open green spaces for exercise and social interaction with other dogs, people and locations within your living area. Practically speaking, a large dog in a small home can have various impacts on simple things like manoeuvring around the dog in tight spaces, through to other practical considerations such as rest locations for the dog as it’s not ideal for a dog bed or dog crate to occupy half a living room. Another example that comes to mind (regardless of its size) is keeping a dog in a flat, with multiple stairs to navigate on each toilet break and indeed where you are going to take the dog to the toilet every hour or more. Brian Faulkner: When people are considering getting a dog it is important to do some homework. The three main considerations are space, time and finances. Most dog breeds are naturally energetic and need space in order to maintain both their physical and mental health. Obviously, the larger and more energetic the breed, the more space they require. Dogs are social animals and therefore require company and stimulation in order to thrive and be happy. Leaving a dog alone for long periods often leads to compromised wellbeing due to anxiety and boredom. What’s more,dog ownership isn’t cheap. Even the healthiest dog requires investment in good nutrition, preventative healthcare, including vaccinations and parasite control. Unfortunately, few dogs go through their entire lives without requiring at least some veterinary care. Sudden and prolonged illnesses can often result in vet bills that reach thousands of pounds.

Q: Does your living situation (city vs rural areas) affect what kind of breed you should get?

Brian Faulkner: There are many variables that affect which breeds of dogs are best suited to urban or rural environments. Although most breeds of dogs can ultimately adapt to both city and country life, the most obvious consideration is the space required to exercise larger, more energetic breeds. Whilst exercise facilities do exist in built-up areas, rural environments generally benefit from having a wider range of woodland walks in which dogs can run freely. Urban environments are associated with greater levels of air pollution. This can potentially impact breeds that are more prone to respiratory issues such as the short-faced breeds, or breeds with a greater incidence of cardiac issues.

Q: How can you tackle separation anxiety when you start going to the office more frequently?

Nick Jones: Ideally the owner will start some preparation before the date of returning to work so that the desired time for being left alone is worked towards over a few weeks to help ensure that the dog can cope as the owner progresses with gradually extending departures whereby the dog is left home alone. Consider taking a traditional approach to separation issues by leaving your dog with a stuffed Kong or similar food-based toy for 5 minutes as you leave the home, and then make a note of the dog’s responses in your absence and return. Calm, almost non-interactive human-dog returns can help manage the dog’s emotional state when you re-enter the home. The unit was given to Davies by their equipment supplier PROACT Medical for the referral practice to donate to a worthy organisation of their choice. “PROACT Medial is very generous with its support for veterinary anaesthesia in the developing world,” said Louise Clark, who is Head of Anaesthesia at Davies “This pulse oximeter is one of several essential pieces of kit that they have donated over recent years. They asked us to find a suitable recipient for it and we chose the WVS for the amazing work they do for animals in need, wherever they are around the globe.”

A pulse oximeter is a potentially lifesaving tool for the early recognition of problems associated with anaesthesia. Within human healthcare it is included by the World Health Organisation on their surgical safety checklist. The Worldwide Veterinary Service provides free expert care to animals in need all over the world, by sending vets where they are needed most. The Service trains vets at their International Training Centres in India and Thailand together with running bespoke courses throughout Asia and Africa.
