My dog has been diagnosed with liver disease My little Yorkshire Terrier, Amy, has been diagnosed with liver disease her vet says her behaviour may change is this likely?

Q

Dean Hart answers your questions Dean Hart is a Clinical Behaviourist and Tutor at the Canine Studies College and specialises in helping mature students set up and develop their own business within the canine industry. Visit www.thedoghut.biz

My dog growls at me When I try to move my Jack Russel off the furniture, he growls at me, I am not happy about this, so what should I be doing to stop this?

Q

Bless her, hopefully your vet will be looking after her and you. Yes, potentially all animals that suffer with severe liver disease may develop abnormal behavioural signs. Depending on the severity of Amy’s disease you could see any of the following changes: disorientation, pacing, head pressing, circling, stumbling, collapse or possible seizures. With some dogs that experience this debilitating disease you may also see aggressive behaviour, but with appropriate treatment for Amy, your vet may stabilise her condition and she may show no or little behavioural change. Veterinary treatment is the most sensible and needed route to take. I would suggest you go back to your vet to establish the severity of Amy’s condition and explore possible dietary changes that may help slow down progression of this disease.

A

I would think your JRT is not very happy with this situation either! In most situations where there is an aggressive response, dogs demonstrate aggressive behaviour to stop the person from getting closer. While this behaviour is not acceptable, the first sensible approach is to try to avoid the aggression, to minimise the risk of injury. Do not try to physically move your dog, do not stare ‘purposely at him’, or tell him off when he growls. Initially, be inventive, ring the doorbell or pretend you are dishing up his food in the kitchen for example, so he gets off without force. I can hear some people taking a sharp intake of breath, saying this is ‘giving in’ to him, but in most situations, this will lower the aggression, reduce the dog’s emotional state so the owner can then handle the situation more appropriately and importantly keep safe. This is far better than consistently challenging a dog which will only serve to increase their aggression and the likelihood of it becoming a learned response. This approach will only lead to failure. You have not mentioned how you are asking him to get off, but often dogs perceive this type of situation as threatening, even if they are ‘resource guarding’ the battle for control of the resource can cause anxiety. There needs to be a long-term management and prevention plan in place to help reduce this behavioural response and help build your relationship with him, but only after there has been a behavioural consultation to assess your dog’s motivation and possible influences. Using high value treats is a good starting point for retraining, as you will need to ‘toss’ these away from him onto the floor, to encourage him to get off. When he gets off the furniture (to get the treat) this is the reward for complying. You then need to ask him, calmly, to carry out another behaviour, like go out into the garden, so he does not try to get back on! You can develop a hand signal for this treat delivery which can be developed later as a cue for asking him to get off. He will not learn to ‘get on’ to ‘get off again’ to be given treats, as the timing should be sufficiently different and provided you deliver the treats simply without too much fuss, do not try to retake ‘possession’ of the furniture straight away, provide alternative places for him to sleep and give him something to do immediately afterwards. Ultimately, he needs to learn that he is not allowed on your furniture, that he has alternative locations. Place his dog bed on the floor, near to you if needed, and make it as comfy as possible. Encourage him to stay in it by giving him a stuffed Kong or similar every time he gets into it (you haven’t mentioned that he has food aggression!) Try to ‘block off’ his access to any furniture, by using other items, during this retraining, not yourself. I would recommend you organise a qualified and experienced behaviourist to come and assess your situation in depth and help you implement a structured rehabilitation plan. No matter how safe you may feel, aggression is always dangerous and can develop quickly into more difficult and challenging behaviour. Seeking professional help does not mean you have failed, it just means that additional help is needed from somebody who specialises in this field. A bit like when I call a car mechanic, I can check and fill the oil and water, check the tyres, clean the car and drive it – but I wouldn’t have a clue what to do if it broke down as I sped down the motorway!

Troublesome Treacle Is there such a thing as a Psychic Dog? Hello My Gorgeous Friends, As I sit at my laptop the sun is shining through my window and I’m feeling good! The lighter evenings mean more walks and for Mistress and I, the chance to sit outside in the garden after a long day in the office. The most exciting toys came in the post the other day from Rolf C Hagen UK Ltd. Here’s what I got! A Nerf Dog Tennis Ball Blaster! Oh my goodness, I’ve never so much fun in all my life. The ball was shot out of this high powered launcher into the air as then I ran as fast as my little legs would go to retrieve it. See this video to see how it works. I usually chew up all my toys however tough they look, but not these ones from Zeus Interactive toys! I am having so much fun with them and they’re keeping me and Mistress active for hours on end. Because Zeus know that dogs see in shades of blue and yellow their K9 Fitness Range have been carefully chosen for maximum visibility. This is a brilliant idea and so much easier to find! Sorry about the back view photo of me but mum insisted on taking it because she thinks I am a sight seer! Is there such thing as a Psychic Dog? Even when I don’t know we are expecting a visitor I will sit and wait for them at the front door. Are there any other of my furry friends that are clever like this? I am sure there are as we are just so clever!! Maybe we should start a ‘furtune’ telling business… I will be 8 this year yet it doesn’t seem to me that long ago I was a cute little puppy. I still feel the same in my head it’s only when I look in the mirror I realise how much bigger I am! I think Mistress feels the same. She is quite old now (sorry mum but you are) but still acts like a kid and plays awful tricks on me like hiding behind the door and jumping out. She says we never grow up and just wear bigger clothes or fur coats in my case!

Treacle – The Psychic Dog!

I love writing my column and I have got so carried away again, I’ve run out of space and time! Until next month! K9 Fitness Range

Agria Pet Insurance supports Bee-Friendly initiative Usually, four-legged creatures are the focus for the team at Agria Pet Insurance. But for the second year running, the specialist pet insurer has taken care to help those with six legs too… he British Bee Veterinary Association (BBVA) aims to highlight bee sustainability and address the threats faced by one of our most important species. Bees are critical to the food chain, so the BBVA, with support from Agria Pet Insurance, is doing everything they can to help their plight.

T

Did you know? • We depend on pollination from bees for a third of the foods we eat • It takes the nectar from two million flowers to make just 500g of honey • Bees can do basic maths! • Pollen shortages are a huge threat to bees – each colony needs up to 30kg per year (the equivalent of two large bags of dog food) As well as pollen shortages caused by a reduction in suitable habitat and wild flora, bees are also under threat from pesticides, agrochemicals and parasites.

8

Fortunately, making some small changes can make a big difference. Agria Pet Insurance is supporting the BBVA’s ‘Bee-Friendly Practice’ initiative with a donation. The initiative encourages veterinary practices to plant bee-friendly plots, window boxes or containers to provide extra food for bees. It’s the second year that Agria has supported this initiative, together with a pledge to provide ongoing support to help the charity. To find out more about the BBVA, visit www.britishbeevets.com

Shine through Spring and Summer this year Get your horses & pets in tip top condition for the season and shine above the rest. Their winter coats will be moulting out. Instead of just treating the surface, by grooming and shampooing, why not think of supplementing their diet too. After all we are what we eat! By Jennie Gallaher

O

ur “O-Mega Shine” & “Hyper Coat Prime“ supplements are 100% cold pressed Hemp seed oil. This supplement boasts 87% Omega Oils, containing Omega 3, 6 & 9. Our customers simply love this product, once they’ve seen the results they are amazed. Unlike most oil supplements on the market where you have to feed it in high quantities to see results. The high quality of these two supplements means as little as 15ml per day per horse and as little as 5ml for a dog gets results. It is a 100% vegetarian source of Omega Oils, which is also packed with essential fatty acids. One of our customers says “not only did my horses coat start to shine, but his mane growth and general condition also amazed me and my instructor. Just a groom, even on show days gets him shiny. I also noticed his hoof condition has improved and all with only 15ml a day.” The Hyper Coat Prime supplement for dogs is used by a Crufts champion.

An Animal Health customer’s horse that uses O-Mega Shine A great way to help your pets to get rid of their winter coats is to give them a full on pamper a ”spring clean”. Give them a nice all over groom to loosen and remove as much of the loose coat as you can. Then give them a wash with warm water and your preferred shampoo. Our top selling horse shampoos is “Super Body Wash”, which is a non-rinse shampoo with Tea Tree and peppermint. Our popular colour enhancing shampoo (Super White, Super Red, Super Gold & Super Black) are all available in sizes from 250ml to 5lt, and are all concentrated so a little goes a long way. Our Hyper Coat Prime range also includes a nourishing shampoo and a super concentrated condition. Quite often when my horse Thai moults out his coat he gets quite scurfy. As much as I brush, still white scurf appears and he

looks quite unkempt and unloved. So on a nice warm spring afternoon I set about getting him looking nice, which normally results in me being filthy and frizzy haired. I give him a good groom, then damp him down with warm water and then massage in our “Scurf Off” shampoo which is rich in Rosemary oils and ideal to help the dandruff disappear. Then he is rinsed off and dried off. Once I’ve finished he is looking lovely and can be rugged up all cosy and put to bed in his stable for the night. Whilst I try not to swallow the horse hair in my mouth and go and get myself showered and clean again. n To view our full range go to www.animal-health.co.uk or call us on 01787 476400.

ADVERTORIAL

IAMS donates 100 tonnes of food to rescue dogs & cats

W

ith 9 million dogs and 8 million cats kept as pets in the UK1 we truly are a nation of animal lovers, and thankfully more and more of us are choosing to adopt. This is wonderful news for the many dogs and cats waiting for their forever homes, but for every pet adopted, there are more waiting for their own loving family. This is why IAMS is proud to support pet rescue centres and charities across the UK through our I AM HOME feeding programme.

In 2018, we helped to feed thousands of hungry and homeless dogs and cats donating almost 100 tonnes of food to animal rescue centres across the UK, from Cornwall right up to Inverness! We have built trusted relationships with more than 30 animal charities, providing support and care by donating IAMS’ premium nutrition to animals in need, ensuring they benefit from a 100% complete and balanced diet while they wait to be united with a loving family. 2. SUPPORT – This year our friendly IAMS team will take part in volunteer days, helping to relieve the tiring work load that the rescue centre staff face every day.

The I AM HOME feeding programme supports UK pet rescue charities in three ways: 1. DONATE – Not only do we donate food to selected I AM HOME registered charities we also provide FREE I AM HOME Welcome Home Packs for staff to gift with every adopted pet.

Meet Miracle, the rescue dog who saved a family

www.rescueandanimalcare.com

Our growing I AM HOME community on the IAMS UK Facebook page enables pet parents to share their own personal and heart-warming stories of pet adoption, plus our partner charities share stories of cats and dogs waiting to find their forever home. Further real life and inspiring pet adoption stories can be found at www.iams.co.uk/iamhome, including the incredible story of Miracle, our I AM HOME Ambassadog.

I AM HOME Ambassadog Miracle truly represents how adopting a pet today can change a life forever. Life for Miracle started with a rough beginning. Indeed, it’s a miracle he survived. As with so many rescues, Miracle shows his thanks for a second chance at life in a very special way – through his love and devotion for Amanda’s son Kyle who lives with Cerebral Palsy and autism. The pair communicate through an unspoken language, but one they both understand. Pet parent Amanda says, “the two are like kindred spirits.”

3. CARE – We raise awareness of rescue centres by sharing rehoming success stories on our IAMS’ website and social media. We do this because we hope to inspire more people to adopt.

1

Miracle was the inspiration behind I AM HOME and soon became IAMS’ Ambassadog because his story gives hope to all of the homeless animals waiting to finally say ‘I AM HOME’.

PFMA Pet Population Report 2018

At IAMS we know that every pet deserves a loving home which is why our I AM HOME goal is simply to inspire more people to adopt a pet today and change a life forever. RESCUE AND ANIMAL CARE 28 FEBRUARY – 28 MARCH 2019

sses Balto attending agility cla

Balto and Sandra’s story Back in November 2013, Balto, the Siberian Husky, was living a scary and uncertain life as a stray. It’s not known how long he’d been alone on the streets but at only 8 months old he was picked up and taken to the local council pound.

A

fter a lengthy period of time without being claimed he was sadly placed on the ‘Put to Sleep’ list. With only two days left before being euthanized, Balto was thankfully saved by SHWA Husky Rescue. Retired Police Officer Sandra Heathcote was part of the transport relay team involved with Balto’s rescue and transfer to the safety of a foster home in Sussex and fell in love with the 14

puppy soon after meeting him. Sandra explains, “Balto wasn’t the normal bouncy Siberian Husky that I was used to, instead he was very calm and gentle and I connected with him immediately.” Sandra knew Siberian Huskies well, having owned two already, including her then 14-year old, Kira, but had no intention to take on another dog up until that point. However, after meeting

28 FEBRUARY – 28 MARCH 2019 RESCUE AND ANIMAL CARE

Balto she found herself smitten and soon submitted an application to adopt him and Balto came to live with her in Hayle, West Cornwall. In those early days, Balto looked worse for wear he was very thin with his fur in a terrible condition, but Sandra helped nurse him back to health and with a lot of love and care he soon flourished. Balto’s journey to recovery didn’t stop there. With Kira already working as a Therapy Dog, she took young Balto under her wing and he quickly proved himself to be a natural, later qualifying as a Therapy Dog himself. As part of his duties, Balto has been responsible for supporting many people, from helping an elderly dehydrated patient drink, to comforting a patient following an overdose. As well as his work as a Therapy Dog, Balto and Sandra frequently compete in fun and companion shows where he has been awarded with a number of Best in Show and Reserve Best in Show wins as well as attending agility and trick classes, and trying out scentwork, flyball and tracking. Sandra is especially proud of his achievements winning trick classes as “Huskies are not usually known for that skill.” Whilst it’s clear that Sandra adopting Balto saved his life, she also credits him with saving her own. Sandra suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder, a result of her services as a Police Officer, and believes she would struggle without him, saying: “There are so many things I wouldn’t be able to do without him. He is my soulmate, best friend and constant companion.” Balto will be attending Crufts 2019 in March as part of the Discover Dogs area, as well as with Therapy Dogs Nationwide. n For more information on Crufts, which is taking place from 7th-10th March, please visit https://www.crufts.org.uk/

HorseWorld campaign to end long-term tethering reaches parliament Success for HorseWorld Trust as parliament prepares to debate long-term tethering hanks to massive public support, the issue of long-term equine tethering wasdebated by MP Luke Hall in Parliament on the 20th of February 2019. Bristol based equine rescue charity, HorseWorld, launched #BreakTheChain at Horse of the Year show in October 2018 and since then over 12,000 emails pledging support for the campaign have reached over 94% of MP’s in the UK directly from their constituents. One MP, Luke Hall MP for Thornbury and Yate, took an interest in the campaign. After receiving over 70 emails from his constituents he decided to visit the charity to hear more about the campaign. During his visit Luke met with staff to discuss the issue and met horses with terrible scars induced by tethers. Luke said: “Current Equine welfare codes state that tethering is not a suitable method of long term management of horses, and yet there is no current law to protect horses from dangerous or prolonged tethering. I am holding this debate to call for greater efforts to be made to create the welfare standards necessary to provide horses with the protections they deserve.” There are an estimated 3,500 horses tethered across the UK. Tethering horses for long periods of time jeopardises their welfare. Not only is there serious risk of injury from inappropriate or unchecked tethers but a tethered horse does not have freedom to

express natural behaviour. As a flight animal a horse’s most basic instinct is to run and tethering prevents them from moving anywhere except in a small circle. A study done in South Wales in 2014 found that only 3% of horses were spending more than 5 minutes off their tether over a 6-month period[i]. The practice is universally condemned as a long-term method of keeping horses and it is the opinion of HorseWorld that such a potentially hazardous practice should be regulated by law. HorseWorld Trust launched #BreakTheChain with the aim to limit the time a horse can be tethered to 24 hours and to put a complete ban on tethering in inappropriate locations such as by the side of roads or in the centre of roundabouts, where they pose a risk to motorists as well as themselves. If the campaign is successful it will be a criminal offence to keep a horse permanently on a tether. HorseWorld’s Managing Director, Mark Owen: The practice of tethering is cruel but unfortunately it has become an all too common site and with no legislation in place to protect these horse’s charities are powerless to help. Some horse’s will spend their whole life tied to the same spot, for a flight animal this is unacceptable. We were overjoyed when we met with Luke Hall and he decided to take the subject to parliament, he is truly passionate about animal welfare and it’s great to have his support for this campaign. We are really hopefully about the outcome of the debate.” n If you are interested watching the debate it was shown on Parliament TV: https://parliamentlive.tv/Commons To find out more about the campaign visit: https://breakthechain.horseworld.org.uk/ [1]

Discover Dog Friendly Pembrokeshire Legends are definitely created in Wales and Pembrokeshire is no exception - the birthplace of the Patron Saint of Wales; Saint David, King Henry VII and it’s also the source of the historic bluestones at Stonehenge. ecognised as being the only coastal National Park in the UK with a coastline voted second only to that of New Zealand by National Geographic Magazine, it’s included in a Conde Nast Traveller list of the five best National Parks on the planet and has been crowned Holiday Destination of the year 2018 by BBC Countryfile Magazine. Its stunning 186 mile coastline is a haven for walkers and boasts a total of 56 Coast Awards (11 Blue Flags, 14 Green Coast Awards and 31 Seaside Awards). International sporting events such as Ironman and Red Bull Cliff Diving have themselves also created legends along the Pembrokeshire coastline and have focused a worldwide spotlight on the county’s appeal and infrastructure to be able to host such events. At just over a four hour drive from Birmingham or London and around one and a half hours from South Wales, the natural beauty of the Pembrokeshire coast and countryside means that it’s a destination of choice for millions of visitors each year, many of whom come for the spectacular walks. Other types of tourism, in the form of beach holidays, sport / adventure breaks, faith and historic trails, family parks and zoo’s and the stunning landscape are accessible to everyone and as if that’s not enough, this corner of Wales is now also gaining a legendary reputation for dog friendly tourism. In 2017 Pembrokeshire Tourism, the organisation that supports, promotes and represents the industry held the first ever Dog Friendly Pembrokeshire Tourism Awards which were designed specifically to support and promote dog friendly

“The most dog friendly destination in the UK” provision of tourism in the county. The aim of the awards is to inspire the industry to become more dog friendly and reach out to dog owners who would prefer to travel with their pets rather than face the trauma of separation while they’re away. For the awards, which are still totally unique in the UK, Pembrokeshire Tourism teamed up with Burns Pet Nutrition and involved their specially trained Burns By Your Side Reading Dogs (and owners) throughout the whole process including the judging. Who better to judge the best dog friendly beach than a dog itself? Following the success of the 2017 awards, the Community Council at Amroth had dog waste bins and bag dispensers installed along their award winning seafront and in doing so, not only did it recognise the value of dog friendly tourism but also a shared responsibility to the environment and others. Another community along the coast at Freshwater East successfully fought a proposed dog ban on the beach and referenced it’s shortlisting in the 2017 awards as indication of its appeal to dog walkers. The faith of the community was rewarded when they were announced as category winners in the subsequent 2018 awards. Increased multi media marketing, a new map of dog friendly businesses and filming of a video to showcase the tourism offering have all added to the opportunity for Pembrokeshire to benefit from the additional exposure

28 FEBRUARY – 28 MARCH 2019 RESCUE AND ANIMAL CARE

it’s getting. Positive feedback from influencers indicates that the county is already being viewed by some as “the most dog friendly destination in the UK” Pembrokeshire is serious about tourism provision as a whole and about protecting its appeal as a top UK destination of choice for visitors. The Dog Friendly Pembrokeshire Tourism initiative is supported by Visit Wales, Pembrokeshire Coast National Park Authority, and National Trust Pembrokeshire along with other stakeholders and everyone is keen to promote the message of responsible dog ownership to anyone who visits our picturesque county with a dog. n This project has received funding via the Tourism Product Innovation Fund (TPIF) supported through the Welsh Government Rural Communities - Rural Development Programme 2014-2020, which is funded by the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development (EAFRD) and the Welsh Government, the Fund aims to encourage new innovative product ideas working in partnership which will have a greater impact and attract more visitors.

Needs a lot of exercise and an owner with patience who has lots of time for his training.

Originally a stray. He is neutered. He’s very friendly and just wants to play.

He wouldn’t get along with the other cat there so will have to be homed without other cats now.

With us as his owner passed away. Very energetic, needs a lot of exercise.

He is food protective and not used to being around children. Suitable with sensible teenagers & above.

He can be a little choosy over which other dogs he likes also protective over his things.

THE HUMAN SIDE OF RESCUE Working in the world of rescuing animals is often seen as a dream job. Protecting animals against mistreatment, misunderstanding and even worse. Seeing them off to a new home must surely be very rewarding . It is, but it also brings a lot of emotion that is often not expected and rarely talked about.

C

oming to terms on a daily basis with animals having been let down, in some way, by another human can have a culminative effect on rescuers. It often leads to one of two outcomes, the person becomes every anti people or they leave rescue work emotionally scarred . Many years ago when my involvement with Border Collie Trust grew I soon became aware of this “emotional overload” particularly in one situation where a lady

“Those of us who work on behalf of animals and dedicate our lives to them experience four phases in our career evolution.”

Bailey – Just one of the lovely Border Collies looking for a new home

involved in rescue couldn’t say no to any request for help but felt no one was good enough to adopt from her. It lead to mistakes being made, her marriage breaking down, losing her home and indeed the very rescue she had started. I happened across an article “The Four Phases of Rescue” by Doug Fakkema in 2004, it helped bring an understanding of the emotions we experience every day and to keep things in perspective. The article began - “Those of us who work on behalf of animals and dedicate our lives to them experience four phases in our career evolution. As we are unique, so are our individual stories, but we all undergo a similar process. If we survive that process, 24

we go on to understand that we have achieved what we wanted in the first place.” If you search on the internet you will find the full article but I'll give an idea of its message.... Phase 1 - you enter rescue work full of enthusiasm, intending to save every animal that needs it. Your enthusiasm means 25 hour days are possible, you eat, sleep and breath rescue. You are confident that the simple answers to the complex questions of why rescues are needed will solve the problem. Phase 2 - hearing the same stories day in and day out begin to take their toll. Nobody outside your rescue world understands. Despite your 25 hour day the same problems keep happening. We are tired all the time and perhaps reluctant to even talk about what we do. We start to lose touch with family and friends as it's easier to withdraw into our own little world and try to become thick skinned to it all. Phase 3 - people should be euthanised. No one, including co-workers understands what you are going through. You are always tired but can't sleep. You eat rubbish food, smoke and drink too much but it’s the only thing that helps. Anger becomes your over riding emotion with everyone you meet in any situation. You don’t think anyone is suitable to adopt any of your animals and

28 FEBRUARY – 28 MARCH 2019 RESCUE AND ANIMAL CARE

you may even start to develop the characteristics of the animal hoarder. Phase 4 - you realise you can’t save all the animals or educate the entire world population. You realise though that you can still make a difference and accept the need to make rescue work part of your life, not your complete life. You see that not all people are bad and that the solutions are as complex as the problems. Some people do get stuck in Phase 2 and even worse, Phase 3 but the vast majority move between the phases on a daily basis, recognising that sadness and pain are part of their world and that they need to let the feelings of anger and frustration wash over them. They realise the potential they have to help animals and indeed people. They are making a difference. n Ben Wilkes started as a volunteer at Border Collie Trust in 1997, becoming a Trustee in 2000 and volunteers full time at the Trusts rescue centre. Working with Animals Most of us have experience as children with looking after a pet. Whether it is the school’s hamster that your mum nervously promises you won’t lose over the holidays or a beloved dog (read goldfish, kitten, stick insect, or in my case when about 8, a jar of collected worms) animal life is usually present in some degree when growing up. Statistcs show that in 2017/8 26% owned dogs, 18% cats, and just 0.03 mice - though I’d hazard a guess that many more households actually had mice on the premises than admitted in the survey. It isn’t surprising, then, that so many of us want to work in some way with animals, and there are many careers or ways to fulfill this dream. Here are some pointers to help you with ideas of paid and voluntary jobs in this sector, and how to find out about them. By Juliet Abrahamson

Working with animal charities There are many animal and wildlife charities in the UK, and on all their websites you’ll find ideas of the kinds of work that you can do with them, which will include fundraisers or administrators as well as hands-on animal jobs, such as being an animal technician or veterinary nurse. The RSPCA is the largest animal welfare organization in the UK and aims to prevent cruelty and promote kindness to animals. It

“Do your research – you’ll need to know exactly what requirements are needed for your chosen field to stand a chance of getting a job within it.” How to get started

offers jobs as inspectors, animal welfare officers, and animal collection officers. Blue Cross offers similar work as surgeons or veterinary nurse or animal welfare assistants. World Wide Fund for Nature takes its operation internationally, with opportunities to work abroad in environmental jobs. The Wildlife Trusts looks for conservation officers and countryside assistant positions, and you can also apply to be a volunteer, which can be an excellent opportunity to get outside and experience wildlife. 26

Animal courses, training and qualifications are important when seeking a job with animals. Ideally you should look for a combination of relevant, accredited animal courses and hands-on experience. Do your research – you’ll need to know exactly what requirements are needed for your chosen field to stand a chance of getting a job within it. Employers will need to see that you have a recognised diploma or accreditation to be employed, and that you have a real interest in animal welfare. You can research hands-on college courses on working with animals at places such as Easton & Otley College (www.eastonotley.ac.uk), and Animal Jobs Direct provide courses in many subjects online. Also at Animal Jobs Direct you will find useful and comprehensive ebook guides to finding out what working or volunteering with animals jobs are available.

Placements and apprenticeships. Animal care apprenticeships are becoming more common and are an excellent way of

28 FEBRUARY – 28 MARCH 2019 RESCUE AND ANIMAL CARE

starting a career with animals. Here are some of the placements on offer, and for full details look on their websites. It’s worth looking at these even if you’re not a student, to discover any volunteer jobs on offer. The RSPCA has started offering animal care apprenticeships in their animal centres, and they're keen to give young people from disadvantaged backgrounds the chance to start a career in this field. With Pets at Home you can apply to become a groomer, where you'll spend 13 months working for its Groom Room business. If you are over 16 you can work for the National Animal Welfare Trust at one of its animal rehoming centres. The British Wildlife Centre in Surrey offers one-week placements for students on a recognised animal management course, and finally the Game & Wildlife Conservation Trust take on some students each year, and also offer volunteering opportunities.

jobs and gaining work experience will help show you are committed. It will also give you an idea of the day-to-day work involved and thereby make sure it is really the direction you want to go in. Most charities involved with the care of animals, wild or domestic, are always looking for volunteers, so whether you are seeking to enter the profession and get some experience while you are still at school or university or simply want to work with animals on a voluntary basis, scour the websites of organisations for information and contact details. Look in your own area to find out which local or national charities operate there, or contact local vets, kennels, riding stables or animal sanctuaries that could be crying

out for volunteer help. All it takes is a small search on their websites, and a phone call to ask if they need help. National charities include those such as RSPCA, Blue Cross, PDSA, Dogs Trust and Cats Protection. Certain charities may offer interesting and worthwhile jobs – how about looking after puppies until they can go for training with Guide Dogs for the Blind, who also have over 50 other different established roles for the volunteer? Or find out if your own dog or cat would be suitable to make therapeutic visits to hospitals, special needs homes or care homes with the Pets as Therapy organization. Riding for the Disabled Association helps the disabled to take part in many riding activities, and volunteers can help with mucking-out or grooming. The Cinnamon Trust helps the elderly or ill to care for their pets. There are also many volunteering opportunities available both in the UK and abroad for graduate students. To read more about what you could do including rescuing chimpanzees in Zambia and elephants in Indonesia, see volunteering with animals at https://www.prospects.ac.uk/ Finally in your search don’t forget that it is vital to be able to work with people when you want to work well with animals.

Helping puppies live free from pain and disease

New research reveals powerful long-term impact of DNA tests on dog diseases The Animal Health Trust was one of the first laboratories in the world to offer DNA testing to dog owners To date, thanks to donors and a ten year partnership with The Kennel Club, the AHT has not only created the UK’s largest canine genome bank but also developed 20 DNA tests for more than 50 different breeds. These have been used to test over 60,000 dogs, helping to breed more than 164,000 hereditarily clear puppies born free from debilitating or blinding inherited conditions. The results of a recent study show just how important DNA tests are when it comes to breeding healthier dogs. Scientists looked at the DNA testing data for eight diseases in eight breeds of dog, and discovered that approximately ten years after each DNA test became available, the gene mutations that caused the diseases had decreased in each breed by a staggering 90 per cent or more.

28 FEBRUARY 2018 – 28 MARCH 2019 RESCUE AND ANIMAL CARE

This study proves that DNA testing of dogs can have huge positive health implications for both puppies and potentially the health and welfare of the breed as a whole. The research that the AHT does to develop DNA tests couldn’t happen without charitable support. Despite their success, there remains a huge amount to do with over 300 known inherited diseases in purebred dogs alone. n To find out more about the AHT’s canine genetics work, visit: www.aht.org.uk

Dakota goes from death’s door to dancing pony! Dakota was part of one of the worst rescue cases HorseWorld have ever attended. When she came in she had a foal at foot, was heavily pregnant, underweight and completely feral Where Dakota was rescued from

Dakota safe at Horseworld

T

he conditions from which Dakota was rescued were unimaginable and despite being only 3 years old it was obvious she had experienced serious neglect and did not have any trust in people at all. Her fear was understandable, she tried to avoid human contact at every opportunity and wouldn’t even come to staff for food. Unfortunately, Dakota had been so neglected by her previous owners that her foal died shortly after being born, our team didn’t push her handling and gave her time to recover. HorseWorld trainers, Kayleigh and Caitlin, have extensive experience handling horses from all backgrounds but Dakota and the horses she was rescued with posed a whole new challenge. Kayleigh said: “The horses from Dakota’s group were unlike any we’ve ever worked with, it wasn’t just that they were frightened of us, their instincts overwhelmed them and told them to run from us so none of our traditional methods worked.” The training team spent hours sitting on a stool in a barn with Dakota just getting her used to

and she is now a fully-fledged agility pony! Dakota will follow her trainers around an agility course, over small jumps, over

tarpaulin, through water and underneath archways. She will smile on command and can count to five with her hoof. Kayleigh said: “Dakota is an amazing pony, she is intelligent and is such a funny character. We are all really proud of the progress she has made and she will be able to meet the public at our open days in 2019!” Dakota the dancing pony is looking for people to adopt her! being around people. The next challenge was getting a head collar on her, this took a very long time even once Dakota had overcome her fear of people she had her own ideas about her training programme. Everything had to be done on her terms, once she’d had enough there was no reasoning with her! Nearly 3 years after she arrived at HorseWorld she is finally able to do things a normal horse would be able to do and more! It was obvious to her trainers that Dakota was smart and would do anything for a treat, the decision was made to start clicker training her to do tricks RESCUE AND ANIMAL CARE 28 FEBRUARY – 28 MARCH 2019

Drinking regularly is important for your cat’s health as it helps ensure proper kidney function and helps prevent crystal formation that can lead to urinary tract infection. Since cats are picky drinkers, Catit developed a fantastic range of cat drinking fountains. Cat drinking fountains are recommended by vets as an effective way to encourage your cat to drink more. A fountain provides your cat with a constant source of clean, healthy and flowing water. Tap water is re-circulated through a filter to remove harmful chemicals which helps to prevent urinary tract diseases. Catit fountains hold between 1.5-3 litres of water, providing your kitty with a plentiful supply of water to last the whole day and maximising time between refills. Unlucky in love? Owning a dog makes you more attractive • Bulldogs are the best wingmen, with 85% of owners in a relationship or married London, 11 February 2019: Dog owners are more likely to be married or in a relationship when compared to non-dog owners, according to new research from Rover.com. The dog walking and sitting service has found that whilst three in four (75%) dog parents have partners, only 54% of non dog owners have found love. When it comes to different breeds, Bulldogs have proven to be the best wingmen, with 85% of owners in a relationship or married. Terrier owners closely follow, with 83% settled down.

• 75% of dog owners are married or in a relationship, compared to 54% of non-dog owners • 39% believe owning a dog makes them more attractive

Top 10 dog breeds most likely to have owners married or in a relationship Bulldog, Terrier, Daschund, Pug, French Bulldog, Labrador, Retriever, German Shepherd, Jack Russell, Spaniel Nearly half (43%) of owners have used their dog as bait to land a date, with retriever

owners most likely to leverage their furry friend (75%). Terrier owners are least likely (37%), despite 83% having found love. What’s more, over a third (39%) of dog owners believe that owning a dog makes them more attractive to potential partners, with one in 10 saying they would never date someone who didn’t own a dog. In Brighton, this number rises to one in four. Christopher Cederskog, European General Manager at Rover.com, says: “We know that Britain is a nation full of dog-lovers, and this love of dogs can really bring people together. Not only are dogs a great conversation starter, but a dog walk is a great date idea too - so it’s not surprising that many owners have found themselves love.” n For more information or to sign up either as a walker, sitter or owner, please visit: https://www.rover.com/uk/ https://www.facebook.com/RoverDotComUK

Get to grips with Pick & Snip Mayhew’s innovative programme designed to provide vulnerable pet owners with preventative veterinary care Mayhew is a small animal welfare charity with a big difference. We know that a major part of our work lies in understanding the links between social issues and animal welfare, and we work hard to improve life for pets and their owners through a series of pro-active community initiatives and preventative veterinary care. ne of our most important beliefs s that neutering is the most responsible action an owner can take for their pet. Neutering is a simple, quick and low-risk procedure with a number of benefits including: • Behavioural improvement – Neutered pets are less likely to exhibit unwanted behaviours such as spraying, roaming and fighting • Medical wellbeing – Neutering reduces the risk of your pet developing certain cancers and other diseases • Community welfare – Without reproductive control, stray and feral cat populations will rapidly expand

O

PICK & SNIP Our vision is for all pet owners to recognise the benefits of neutering. To make it as easy as possible for those in a vulnerable situation to access our services, we offer an innovative Pick & Snip programme designed to provide free neutering to those most in need.

and could sadly lead to cases of animals been abandoned, neglected or traded irresponsibly. By preventing unwanted pregnancies and other behavioural, health and welfare issues, we hope to see fewer animals abandoned or brought into our shelter, and more pets stay together with loving owners.

Through our Pick & Snip scheme, our Animal Welfare Officers will: • Collect your pet directly from your home, or wherever you are staying • Bring them to our Clinic for treatment • Explain the benefits of neutering and answer any questions about the procedure • Organise and provide any necessary after-care • Return your pet to you (most likely on the very same day)

n To find out more about the benefits of neutering, and to see if you are eligible for our Pick & Snip programme, please visit our website www.themayhew.org or alternatively call and speak to one of our Animal Welfare team on 020 8962 8000. To adopt River, or see our other animals needing a new home, please check out our rehoming pages www.themayhew.org

Our Pick & Snip service is available for dogs and cats, within our designated catchment area. Unneutered female cats are able to reproduce from just five months old, and can have up to three litters per year. This could understandably cause problems for owners who are not able to look after a large and ever-growing number of pets –

CASE STUDY – Rosie and Brave

CASE STUDY – River Poor little River was found abandoned in a commercial garage, which we suspect she had chosen for warmth. Her beautiful white fur was stained with oil, and more upsettingly, she had recently given birth – but her kittens were nowhere to be seen. River was friendly and curious when our Animal Welfare Officers arrived on the scene, leading them to believe she was a domesticated cat. They also discovered early signs of mastitis, a bacterial infection which effects milk production and is prone to developing in dirty environments (like a garage). Because River was found without her kittens, we sadly have no way of knowing if they have survived – or were 40

When Rosie and Brave’s original owner passed away, they were left with no home – and no-one to look after them. A neighbour cared for the two cats as best as they could, until sadly it became too overwhelming for them to continue – and Rosie and Brave turned to life on the streets. Being unneutered, Rosie was at risk of multiple pregnancies, infections and even death. Her litters would also have increased the number of stray and feral cats in the community. Luckily for both cats, they were recently found by our Animal Welfare Officers and brought into Mayhew for treatment. Both were then quickly rehomed, and now live happily without the risk of unwanted litters

abandoned elsewhere, or even sold on for profit. Many other cats unfortunately suffer in identical situations, and we believe widespread neutering would prevent unwanted mums and kittens alike meeting similar fates. River has now been neutered and is in good health. She is being well looked after by staff at Mayhew whilst she waits to find her forever family.

Has a simply charming personality. She enjoys human company and will rub around legs.

He loves a game with his string toy, chasing it about like a playful youngster at times.

Will require outside access as she enjoys the occasional potter outside, particularly when it is sunny.

Looking for plenty of green space that he can explore, where he will create his own adventures.

Neutered and microchipped. Very friendly and talkative, he loves cuddles and eats well.

She is affectionate, loves playing with her toys and likes a lap to sit on. Matilda will need an adult only home.

He is very friendly is quite happy meeting and greeting visitors, especially if they come bearing food!

He is now a bit of a chunky monkey and loves his bed! Needs a home with a safe garden away from busy roads.

He will need someone who can give him the love and patience he needs, and he also gets on with other cats.

She is an adorable girl but has unfortunately ‘let herself go’ a bit and needs to regain her waistline.

A home together would be purrrfect for this pair as, although they have the occasional spat, they’re best buddies really and have been together for a long time. However this is not essential should the right home come along seperately.

Mary is unwilling to share with another cat so would be better as an only pet.

He can be quite fussy with a purr like a tractor. All he needs is a little time and patience for his true personality to come shining through.

Maybe I can go and live with another cat providing they were’t too dominant. I may be a big cat but I’m a wuss really !!

Not to be rehomed with young children and unsuitable as a housecat.

All I want is a quiet life which is why I probably wouldn’t be suitable for rehoming where there are young children. Too noisy for me!

Planning for the worst

D

on’t turn away, we are talking about end of life here, that horrible, distressful but unavoidable subject that we all face, no matter how much we would prefer to ignore it. From a pet owner’s perspective this is so difficult to think about never mind actively consider action. Our pets are meant to live forever or at least as long as we do! But every now and then we catch a glimpse of reality staring us in the face and have to somehow deal with the fact that our pet in in the autumn of their life. We plan many things but end of live often lands on the “too difficult to deal with pile”, which is understandable. As our pets age they become more susceptible to serious and even terminal illnesses or age related debilitating conditions that cause suffering and a deteriorating quality of life, when such conditions have struck, the outcome is partially within our control. When we are facing end of life head on, we have the ability to help our pets in a respectful and dignified way. if other treatments to cure or control are not working.

www.rescueandanimalcare.com

When the end is approaching and we know our pets better than anyone, not taking steps to plan is risking a fall into a distressing emergency, in such a situation many say that it is “better to euthanise a week too early rather than a day too late”. And if you are going to face this difficult time many believe that being in the secure and familiar environment of your home is the way to reduce some of the stress for both you and your pet. Our pets give us unquestioning love, loyalty and companionship all their life, a gentle at-home euthanasia, when they may be in pain or suffering is a respectful

way to say a peaceful goodbye on their final journey. Doing some homework and finding out what to expect can take away much of the stress and uncertainty. Talk to your friends, your family and your veterinary clinic, use the internet, get advice and do not to rush into any decision. If you do decide to embrace euthanasia to stop pain and suffering the whole process should be unhurried, peaceful, it is worth considering that the process can normally be done in your own loving home environment. When the inevitable has caught up with your pet, try to take some control of the situation and make the end respectful, not rushed or stressful. n For more information on home visit euthanasia and the service provided by Cloud 9 Vets, you can visit their website at cloud9vets.co.uk or call the Care Coordinators on 08000 354 999.

Eighteen-month-old Japanese Spitz tests Mayhew’s wits with mystery skin condition

Fox with raw looking rashes

When an 18 month-old Japanese Spitz was found wandering the streets of Brent at night, a concerned member of the public brought him straight to Mayhew. oor little Fox had raw looking rashes on his legs and neck that were clearly causing him pain, but with no collar or microchip evident, we had no way of knowing where he came from or what might have happened to him. • Aside from his obvious injuries, Fox seemed clean and well groomed – it was hard to believe he was a stray, and the mystery continued at his first general health check. • Thinking that his sore rashes were perhaps a sign of a skin infection, our Animal Welfare Officers took a series of swabs and asked our Vet team to take a look. • Surprisingly, the results of all of these came back clear – there was no known present infection.

P

Mayhew

Simba M

We therefore chose to treat Fox with medicated baths to see if the inflammation and redness went down, and admitted him to our isolation unit until we could work out what was wrong. Unfortunately, we soon discovered that the medicated baths seemed to be irritating Fox’s wounds even further. After stopping them, we decided just to monitor Fox’s skin and how things developed, and see if we could find some further clues as to the cause of the irritation. We gave Fox a buster collar to prevent him scratching and opening up the wounds even further, and made him as comfortable as possible in his cabin. After a few days of careful observation, we noticed that the rashes appeared to be calming down, and were already much less red and raw. Fox’s general health check came back with no concerns, so we continued to care for him as best we could. Soon enough, the irritation all but disappeared, and we were able to take a closer look. Fox’s exposed skin was now

shiny and hairless, and no longer seemed to be causing him any undue harm or alarm. Our kennels team therefore concluded that his condition was likely to be the result of an old trauma, possibly a burn, which had flared up again after being exposed to an unknown irritant on the streets. After being kept clean and well cared for, the inflammation had reduced dramatically and Fox was able to show his true colours – as a friendly, happy, and bouncy pup! We won’t ever know Fox’s full story, but we are determined to give him a happy ending. He is clearly a tough cookie, and is currently on the hunt for his forever home! n If you’d like to find out more about Fox, please visit our website www.themayhew.org and pop in to meet one of our Adoption Officers.

Three-quarters of UK pet owning holidaymakers choose staycations Many UK holidaymakers are already planning their Easter and summer breaks and as a treasured member of the family many will be taking their pet. However, leading pet charity Blue Cross reveals that 47%1 of cat or dog owners already consider travelling abroad too expensive with a pet and 76%2 have chosen a particular holiday in the UK just so they can take their beloved pets away with them more easily.

Labradoodle getting into back of car he uncertainty around the Brexit agreement and travelling with pets, potentially costing around £250* more just to get them in a position to be allowed to travel, the cost of taking our beloved four-legged members of the family abroad just seems to be too big a barrier. Not only that, the survey commissioned by the charity showed that more than half (54%)3 say they are worried their pet would get hurt travelling on a plane or ferry, resulting in 84%4 of people choosing to take their pet on holiday via car. The UK has some outstanding beauty which is often overlooked, and most of these are ideal for pet owners to enjoy long walks and sightseeing. On average, amongst dog and cat owners who have chosen a holiday because they could take their pet, countryside holidays proved to be the most popular (60%)5. Mark Bossley, Chief Vet at Blue Cross

Victoria, said: “We’re a nation of pet lovers so it’s no surprise that lots of people choose to go on holiday with their pets. We need to make sure that the four-legged members of the family are travelling safely and are happy, as there can be risks involved when travelling with them. Remember to always get advice from a vet before going on any journey with your pet.” All pet owners must make sure their dog is safely clipped into a car harness seatbelt or in a travel crate and cats in a secure cat carrier. Always make sure you have lots of water for yourself and your pets, take breaks if on long journeys, and never leave your pet in the car unattended as this can be fatal very quickly. Mark continues: “One of the biggest threats to pets is heatstroke when in a car so stay with them, lots of ventilation is key and keep an eye on them to make sure they’re looking happy and healthy so everyone can enjoy the holiday.”

If you do take your pet abroad, Blue Cross advises to avoid aeroplanes and ferries, unless the ferry company allows pets to stay with their owners. Pets should never be left unattended in a car or anywhere else when travelling - no matter how short the journey, dogs and cats can deteriorate in minutes and risk fatality. To keep your pets safe when travelling, follow Blue Cross advice and speak to your vet ahead of any journey. Make sure your pet is in good health before embarking on adventures with the four-legged members of the family. n For more advice on travelling safely with pets in summer and general pet summer safety visit https://www.bluecross.org.uk/pet-advice/summer-survival-guide-pets, or to make a donation towards caring for sick, injured and homeless pets visit www.bluecross.org.uk

My dog has a skin problem and I have been advised to do an elimination diet, what will this involve?

Simon Bailey

Vet Simon answers your questions

My dog will be going into kennels and they have requested that he receives a ‘kennel cough’ vaccination before doing so. What does this involve and is it essential?

An elimination diet is usually performed to try to highlight the cause of any underlying intolerance to a food or its ingredients. Usually it is associated with dietary or skin disease and I assume your vet has suggested and is overseeing it. It is a strict regime which is maintained usually for at least six weeks. The diet is usually home cooked and is based on a novel protein and carbohydrate source, and water. A novel dietary source should be something the animal has never knowingly had before to make it a true dietary trial. In addition exercise should be controlled, ideally on a lead so they cannot scavenge at all, as this will invalidate the trial. There are no treats or biscuits, and everything else in their management should remain constant during the trial i.e. medications. If over the course of the trial the signs being tested for improve the original diet is reintroduced to see if the signs recur. If so this confirms a dietary component is involved in the disease condition. The animal is then often referred to as being sensitive or ‘allergic’ to the offending diet. This can be taken a step further and specifically identify if it is a certain ingredient involved with the sensitivity. If the diet or ingredient is involved in the disease it should then be avoided for the future. This can involve long term home cooking of a diet, but for most people this is impractical and not cost effective. Therefore they will look for a commercial sensitive of

‘Kennel cough’, which is more correctly called infectious bronchitis is an infectious condition that is caused by a number of organisms, both bacterial and viruses. It is generally spread from close contact with infected animals and as such kennels are traditionally associated with its spread and hence give rise to its common name of kennel cough. The signs which are seen are a characteristic cough which is described as ‘dry hacking’ in nature, a raised temperature and the dog being quite low in it’s overall demeanour. During the first week it is considered to be infectious to other dogs, especially those which area unvaccinated. In older, the very young and sick animals it can result in a more pronounced signs. Consequently most kennels will request

hypoallergenic diet. This diet should match as closely the main ingredients of those in the dietary trial and gradually be introduced as the main diet. If the disease signs begin to recur with the new diet, then it should be stopped and an alternative tried. This process may take some time and should be performed in a structured manner. Your vet or vet nurse nutritional advisor will be able to help. Sensitive diets are commercially produced and are usually based around fish or poultry as their protein source, and pasta, rice or potato as their carbohydrate source. They are a complete food as so have the required vitamins and minerals included for a healthy pet. It may be that a number of these needs to be tried to see the signs do not recur and the dog eats it. In some instances the sensitivities of the pet is so strong or there are multiple sensitivities that a prescription diet is needed. These diets are very hypoallergenic, and produced in a form that reduces the incidence of sensitivities developing or worsening. They are the most sensitive commercial feeds available. There may be a conflict in diets due to sensitivities and other medical problems, and as such this management can require professional specialist nutritional advice from a veterinary dietician.

dogs are vaccinated prior to being boarded to reduce the possibility of its spread. This vaccine is against the main bacterial component of kennel cough in the UK, called Bordetella Bronchiseptica. It is given by a few drops of liquid into the dogs’ nostrils and will provide a local immunity within 7-10 days and last approximately12 months. The general impression in the area of our surgery is that we are seeing more dogs affected than in previous years, and consequently if your dog is entering kennels or likely to be going to areas where there are a lot of dogs present, such as training classes, shows or common dog walking areas, then it may be wise to vaccinate or at least speak to your vet.

Chubbs will make an amazing companion as he absolutely loves people and giving cuddles!

He needs help with house training, but is good with other dogs, and we are suggesting children 10yrs+

A very shy but sweet girl who will need a kind, gentle and patient owner who will give her the time and space she needs to settle in to her new home.

Was found living as a stray so is looking for a quiet home that can show her she is safe and loved. She can be a little unsure of new people.

He should be fine to live with a gentle cat but no dogs please. He loves to play fetch with bits of rolled up paper.

She is worth the wait for a patient person, she will always be nervous, but is a funny, playful, chatty and affectionate girl, very much in need of a home.

She is a feisty girl with a very independent streak. She takes time to warm to new people.

He is a friendly boy who has been around older children, confident cats who will keep him in his place and other dogs.

She is a big girl who can be very bouncy and excitable once she is comfortable and loves to play with her toys.

He would make a great companion for someone on their own to keep each other company.

access to lots of space for her to run around in and a secure garden as she can jump quite high.

Once he gets to know you his cheeky side comes out and he loves a belly rub! Has a lot of love to give the right owner.

Loves toys! He will focus on his ball etc and will quite happily play all day if you have the stamina Has a lot of love to give.

Loves his tennis balls and rope toys! He would play with them all day if he could and loves to carry them around.

He would benefit from being in a quiet, patient home with someone who can continue to help him build his confidence.

She loves a cuddle and could possibly go into another home with another dog with a suitable introduction.

She is a sweet natured, shy girl, who would benefit most from a quiet home where she can relax and slowly gain more confidence.

Velvet is a Pug cross breed. She is a nervous, but sweet girl, who needs time a patience in order to allow her to gain confidence around people.

He is happy to be around other dogs however is quite vocal in the house. He would love to have a house to call his home.

This beautiful girl is full of life and looking for love. She loves to spend her day playing and getting as much fuss as possible.

Mia has bags of character and would make a great addition to a home with another dog (not young and bouncy!).

Would like to be the only dog in an adult only home where she can find her feet and earn your trust. She is very inquisitive and loves to sniff out yummy treats.
