My puppy is very excitable My puppy is very excitable, excessive jumping around and barking at every little thing, my neighbour thinks I feed her too much protein could this be right?

Why is my dog eating that Q

My Labrador keeps eating soil why would this be and what should I do about it?

This is not an uncommon behaviour and can be seen in many breeds and with dogs of all ages, so you are not alone. Puppies obviously explore everything, especially with their mouths. I am not sure how old your dog is, how often they are ingesting soil or if it has become such a problem that they will not carry out other normal and expected behaviour when they go outside. Firstly, consider what diet you are feeding your lab, especially if you have decided not to feed a standard commercial diet through distrust in the consumer place, a choice that many people have made. Often homemade diets can lead to lowered mineral content and this can lead to soil eating as dogs then start to look for other sources of minerals. If this isn’t the case, then you may need to get your vet on board. You haven’t mentioned any other physical or behavioural symptoms, but it may be that you need to start screening for possible conditions like anaemia caused through a shortage of iron or gastrointestinal problems that could lead to behaviours known as Pica. This is where dogs ingest any non-nutritious items, it almost becomes compulsive and becomes the dog’s sole reason for living! This is a serious problem and you will need to seek professional advice. So, for now, remember that yelling at your dog won’t stop the behaviour but will cause damage to your relationship and this can cause other behavioural problems, reduce your dog’s access to the soil, prevention and management is key. Make sure your dog has enough physical exercise for their age and plenty of mental stimulation to aid relaxation. Lastly if your dog tries to eat soil, replace this behaviour with another fun activity with you, such as playing ball!

Q A

Buying dog treats for my dogs is proving expensive, can I make my own?

Yes, good for you and your dogs! There are a few considerations. If any of your dogs are on a prescription diet you had best check with your vet. Avoid using baking moulds that contain BPA (Bisphenol A.) a chemical found in polycarbonate plastics and has been linked with endocrine disruption in some animals. As a point of interest, you can also buy BPA free dog bowls. There are also other hazards lurking in some food so remember that the following are toxic to dogs, xylitol, chocolate, garlic, onions and grapes. You also need to check the labels for any readymade ingredients you may be thinking of adding, some peanut butter for example contains xylitol. If cooking foods from scratch also remember to cook to a recommended heat to kill off pathogens such as Salmonella and avoid a fat overload! Happy Baking!

Wow what a massive subject diet and behaviour is and filled with so much disagreement and debate in the doggy world. However, there is scientific evidence that cannot be ignored. Protein is needed for young dogs to grow and for healthy development, so a low protein diet for puppies is not sensible but what is low, medium or high? Well these all depend on your puppy’s breed and activity levels and remembering that puppies do behave excitably too, because they are puppies! A rough daily nutritional guide is around 56 grams of protein for puppies between 12 and 33 pounds in weight, in addition to the right amount of fat and carbohydrate. From a behavioural perspective, when protein is digested partly it becomes small amino acids, these help the production a range of chemicals, some of these are neurotransmitters. Tryptophan is one and this is linked with serotonin production, a chemical known to influence excitability, stress management and coping methods, exploratory behaviour, aggression and mood. So, changes in the level of serotonin in the brain is likely to influence behaviour. But a word of caution, more protein does not mean more serotonin, it is a little more complicated than this. Protein also produces large amino acids. The small amino acids (the ‘good mood’ guys) are in competition with the larger ones when crossing over into the brain, (through the blood-brain barrier). It is the total composition of a dog’s diet that helps with this competition – so a balanced diet is essential for additional serotonin production. This raises another question:- When dogs are fed a simplified raw meat diet without ensuring a daily balanced nutritional approach, how can this benefit the emotional state of the dog – there, I have lit the ‘blue touch paper’ with this question!

Troublesome Treacle Do you have any strange habits? Hello All My Feathered and Furry Fans,

my tongue out to say yes. Impressive eh!

Do you have any strange habits? Mistress says that I have many so I will share them with you guys and gals and see, if indeed my behaviour is a little odd sometimes! Before I reveal all though, I will add that both Mistress and Little Mistress do some rather particular things too. I will explain later…

Number 3. When we walk in the field and Mistress throws the ball, I run for it, catch it and then whereas I used to bring it back to her I just lay down and wait for her to come to me to throw it again. The only way that I will bring the ball to her is if she sits down on a park bench or grass. Perhaps I need to speak to Dean Hart (page 2) our Pet Behaviourist as I have noticed that making Mistress sit down before I respond to commands appears twice in my column so far! Enough about me. Let me talk about some of Mistress’s habits. If you don’t see my column in the issue following this, you will know she has fired me and my Doggy journalist career over.

Number 1. Whereas I used to eat my bowl of food straight away when served, now I wait to be told to eat and I don’t straight away. I start whining until I am told yet again to eat my dinner. And It is not until Mistress sits down to watch me dig in- that I do! Personally I call this good etiquette. Number 2. Another recent new habit which Mistress says I’m very clever is that whenever I’m asked if I want something to eat, I stick

Troublesome Treacle

4

Here we go. Number 1. After a long day in the office and when Mistress settles down on the settee after eating her

dinner, she undoes her TROUSERS! No I am not kidding. Also and this will get me into trouble but to make herself even more comfortable she sometimes even undoes the funny apparel she keeps her boobs in!! Number 2. The most worrying habit of all is her talking to herself. ‘’ Oh no, I’ve run out of toilet paper’’ – ‘’Think I better get myself up to bed now’’-‘’I know there is something I have forgotten to do’’ – and so it goes on.

Number 3. There’s this man called ‘Siri’ she often talks to and asked him thing like, ‘’Will I win the lottery?’’ and ‘’Are you good looking?’’ Well, that’s it. I’ve rabbited on for so long I have reached the end of this month’s column! See you in March and hope you all get lots of Valentines cards.

Do you check your Cat’s Poop? Could your Cat be suffering from Giardia or Irritable Bowel Syndrome

Rommel and Kora

Back In October a new pet joined our home to rule over us all. Rommel is a very cheeky Maine Coon cross kitten, who we absolutely adore. Since we have had him his poop has been loose. By Jennie Gallaher

W

e have on a few occasions had to endure washing his back legs in the sink. A job that none of us enjoyed, especially Rommel. I looked at the kitten food he was on and

Rommel in his cat house 8

Cheeky Rommel chilling out on the sofa decided to change it to a grain free diet, in case he is gluten intolerant. I added a natural probiotic to his diet, to help restore the good bacteria back. I even brought a water filter jug, in case the change in water source might have upset his balance. No of course he is not spoilt at all! Under the vets we had his poop tested, it came back positive for Giardia, so treatment began with antibiotics and a low daily dose of panacur for 10 days. Giardia is a parasitic microorganism that infests the small intestine. It is actually pretty common in cats. Especially multi cat households where a shared litter tray is used, which he did before he came to us. We retested a week after his last treatment, which came back negative, however the diarrhea was back. We tested again and the giardia has definitely gone. My vet explained that the antibiotic also has anti-inflammatory properties and maybe that’s why he improved when on them. As it was reducing the inflammation of his gut lining. A lot of reading up on my part and I saw that a lot of cats that suffer from giardia as a kittens develop irritable Bowel disease (IBD). Rommel is now 6 months old and has had a full blood screen done, which basically checks that all his vitals are ok and organ function is normal. This then indicated that

28 JANUARY – 28 FEBRUARY 2019 RESCUE AND ANIMAL CARE

it probably is IBD. So a new food search is on. My vet and myself contact many cat food makers to find a single source protein that is Hydrolysed and aimed at kittens with digestion issues. Long story short there is not one manufacturer that do this food for kittens, adult cats yes, kittens no. We were keen to keep on a kitten diet as he is a large breed cat and therefore slower to mature and develop then a smaller cat. But I have accepted defeat and selected a gastrointestinal food for adult cats. IBD in cats is very common and is treatable. You can give a daily steroid that can help, but we would rather he wasn’t on medication for life. In the business that we are in, we try to use natural where we can. We continue to add probiotics to his diet. I haven’t told him yet, but dreamies as a treat are definitely off his menu, he won’t be pleased. n Jennie Gallaher runs The Animal Health Company with her husband Paul. See their website www.animal-health.co.uk for their product range which includes Westcotts Premium Dog Food.

Owner of Diabetic dog calls on other diabetic pet owners to choose proper treatment

T

he owner of a diabetic dog has appealed to other animal owners not to give up on their pets after research revealed 1 out of 10 diabetic pets are put down at diagnosis. Rebecca South, 40, from South Yorkshire, a Senior Account Manager at MSD Animal Health, has been managing her 16-year-old terrier Lottie’s diabetes since she was diagnosed with the condition at the age of 10 in 2012. Lottie has since been kept under close supervision with a managed diet and insulin and is otherwise a healthy, happy dog. Recent findings from the Big Pet Diabetes Survey (Neissen et al, 2017) have revealed more than 10 per cent of diabetic cats and dogs are euthanised at diagnosis, despite the fact that they can live normal, healthy lives - and some diabetic cats can even achieve remission. Rebecca is sharing Lottie’s story in a bid to inform other pet owners that their animals can go on to live happy lives following a diabetes diagnosis, whilst also urging pet owners to check in with their vet if they spot any signs of diabetes, including weight loss despite increased appetite, excessive thirst, vomiting or lethargy. Rebecca said: “When Lottie was diagnosed with diabetes the vet advised me that she would need some lifestyle changes and insulin treatment for the rest of her life. If I chose not to treat her, the condition would rapidly progress and I would have to put her to sleep. The thought of putting Lottie down just wasn’t an option. She is an important member of the family, and I wanted to do everything I could to keep her with us.

“Six years on, and managing Lottie’s diabetes is second nature. In fact, very quickly we got into a routine and it is normal for us now. She has twice daily feeds with a specialised diabetic diet, followed by twice daily injections of insulin with a pen. “It does sometimes take more organisation than with a non-diabetic dog, as they have to be fed and dosed at roughly the same time every day. A few of us in my household know how to use the insulin pen, so if I’m not at home, we are able to be consistent with her treatment. She has a check up with her vet every six months and sometimes a blood test to check she is still stable and I monitor her at home for the signs that she may be becoming unstable. Consistency with diet, medication and exercise is the key to a happy, stable diabetic.”

Special Cruft’s 10% Discount Code SW10

According to Blaise Scott-Morris MRCVS, MSD Animal Health’s vet advisor for diabetes, further education is needed amongst pet owners to raise awareness of diabetes in pets and the importance of an early diagnosis to achieve better treatment. She said: “Rebecca and Lottie’s story proves that pets can go on to live a fulfilling life after a diabetes diagnosis. To help ensure the long-term health and well-being of our diabetic pets, successfully managing the various facets of the disease and treatments is critical. “Often animals are put to sleep as owners don’t feel they can cope with the medical side of injecting their animal every day. There are ways to make this much more manageable for clients, including the use of insulin pens similar to those used in the treatment of human diabetes. “While 90 per cent of humans use an insulin pen to facilitate insulin injection, less than 20 per cent of diabetic pets are treated in the same way, which indicates an opportunity to improve pet diabetes management. “MSD Animal Health has also launched a Pet Diabetes Tracker app to make the disease far easier to manage for pet owners. It’s an incredibly useful tool that enables owners to use a smartphone or tablet to track water and food consumption, exercise levels, glucose levels and insulin injections. It also allows reminders to be set for vet appointments and medication timings, providing charts and trends that owners can share with their vet. Blaise is urging pet owners to check in with their vet if they spot any signs of diabetes, including weight loss despite increased appetite, excessive thirst, vomiting or lethargy. She added: “We will hopefully see an increase in the number of owners opting for treatment and a drop in the number of unnecessary euthanasia cases if we can succeed in educating pet owners about pet diabetes management.’

Percy the Pointer cross was given a second chance at life after Amanda Bell and her father, Michael, found him in a very bad way on a street in Cyprus. Having been shot multiple times, unable to stand, suffering with failing kidneys and weighing only 9 kilos, Amanda and Michael arranged for Percy to travel to the UK, with his chances of survival looking uncertain. Having been with the family in Sheffield for over six months, Percy is now recovering well and despite being very poorly and frightened when first arriving in the country, the family have built up trust and bonded with Percy and where he once was too scared to go further than the garden gate, they have since helped him to achieve his Kennel Club Good Citizen Scheme Bronze award and, of course, stand in the ring in the Scruffts semi-final.

Buddy Scheme! Rescued pony begins a career helping disadvantaged children on HorseWorld’s Discovery courses. The Discovery programme gives children with a range of challenging behaviours the chance to work with the rescued horses and learn new skills in a non-classroom setting. gain some strength and eventually put on some weight. 6 months into his rehabilitation and Buddy was unrecognisable, he had made a full recovery and was loving playing with his new friends at HorseWorld. Once Buddy was old enough he began to be trained as a ridden pony. He proved to be very laid-back and gentle and staff thought that he’s make the perfect addition to the Discovery team. All horses have a unique personality, just like the children who attend HorseWorld’s Discovery courses. Each pony can teach a child something different and Buddy has lots of lessons to pass on. His difficult start in life resonates with some of the children who have had troubled

uddy was rescued in 2011 after a member of the public found him wandering in her back garden. At first glance it was obvious something was wrong, despite wearing a rug it was clear that the pony was agonisingly thin and covered in open sores. HorseWorld, together with the RSPCA, stepped in to rescue the pony, by the time they were ready with the lorry to bring him to safety he had collapsed and the team weren’t sure if he would make it. Once he was at HorseWorld the pony, now named Buddy by staff, received emergency veterinary care. He was given fluids and needed a blood

times in their past. Buddy can also sometimes be a bit cheeky which teaches the children how to calmly but firmly ask a horse to stand still or allow them to pick out his feet. Sharon, Discovery course leader, said: “Buddy has come through so much hardship and he got a second chance at life because of HorseWorld. That’s what we want to give to the children on our discovery courses, a chance to flourish in a safe environment.” n If you want to know more about HorseWorld and the Discovery courses please visit: www.horseworld.org.uk or you can find us on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.

About the Discovery Programme Discovery is based on a working farm that is home to the rescue charity, HorseWorld. This means that although Discovery is a small and nurturing learning environment, it is also a good introduction to the workplace and provides a chance to develop practical employability skills. The equine care skills that learners develop during the Animal Care Short Courses provide them with a sound basis for continuing learning in this field, should they wish to. At Discovery we work closely with schools, social care, the local hospital education services and specialist provision units. We are on both the Bristol City Council and South Gloucestershire Councils’ Alternative Provision lists and work with many other local authorities and anyone can refer in to the Discovery programme. www.rescueandanimalcare.com

This amazing Charity, dedicated to Helping Needy Horses and Ponies would appreciate your help

T

he Pit Pony Sanctuary is a Registered Charity- No. 1002933 providing a safe haven for abandoned and unwanted ponies who have suffered a lifetime of neglect. Home to a small herd of long-term residents, the Charity’s ponies all have sad past life stories and each one is as heart-breaking as the next. Whilst it’s easy to dismiss pit ponies as a feature of Britain’s ancient past, the shocking reality is that pit ponies were still being overworked, neglected and mistreated right up until the end of the 1990’s. Roy Peckham one of the founders of The Sanctuary, is convinced the practice could still make a comeback, as no legislation has been passed to make it illegal to use working horses underground. Whilst many of the Pit Ponies they rescued have since passed away Pit Pony Spike survives them all. The Sanctuary continue their work with a real mixture of other types of horses and ponies from an ex Race-horse to tiny ponies.

We need your help Sadly, like most Charities, The Sanctuary has suffered as a result of the recession and Brexit worries and as they receive no government funding, they are grateful for any donation. From just £0.50p a week, anyone can help to provide a loving home for one of the Charity’s permanent residents. You can sponsor online at www.sponsorapony.co.uk or drop The Pit Pony Sanctuary a SAE for a sponsor form. Sponsors will receive an A4 full colour certificate of their chosen pony, a full colour pony information sheet, Newsletters and can visit their sponsored pony (during Centre open hours). Dog breeds and the health problems which can affect them For thousands of years dogs have been selectively bred, based on aspects of their performance, behaviour or appearance. Unfortunately, this selective breeding has also often resulted in inherited diseases that can affect the health and welfare of some of our most popular breeds of dog. Although the effects of some of these genetic diseases are relatively mild, others are thought to cause severe and prolonged pain or discomfort.

F

or example, a condition called syringomyelia has been found to occur in 70% of Cavalier King Charles Spaniels by six years of age and appears to be associated with malformation of the skull, resulting in the presence of fluid-filled cavities in the spinal cord of the neck. The disease is known to be very painful in humans and some affected dogs show severe signs of pain around their head, neck, and forelimbs. Another condition, Brachycephalic Airway Obstruction Syndrome, can be a serious welfare problem for short muzzle “flat faced” (brachycephalic) breeds such as Pugs, Shih Tzus, French bulldogs and Pekingese. Affected dogs are at risk of bouts of severe respiratory distress and fear, and these crises can be life-threatening – for example affected dogs are especially at risk when exercising in hot weather. Even mildly affected dogs are likely to suffer disrupted sleep and are prevented from carrying out normal behaviours such as running and exercising because of breathing difficulties. Breeds with deeply folded skin (a common feature of brachycephalic

18

breeds) may suffer from an increased incidence of skin infections resulting in inflammation and irritation. Anal furunculosis is a condition in which there is inflammation and ulceration of the skin under the tail and around the anus, which can become severe. It is a chronic condition, difficult to treat and, once affected, animals often experience ongoing or recurrent episodes of discomfort and pain throughout their life. German Shepherds are particularly prone although the disorder is also seen in dogs from other breeds, indeed a study found that 84% of cases occurred in German Shepherds. English Bulldogs, Boston Terriers and Pugs can suffer from a condition called hemivertebrae in which bones in the spine tend not to align correctly. This can lead to the spinal cord or the nerves arising from it becoming squashed and damaged, causing pain – which can be severe - wobbliness (ataxia) on the hind legs and can also cause loss of hind leg function and incontinence (inability to control passing urine or faeces). Labrador Retrievers and Newfoundlands can be affected by a number of conditions affecting their joints and mobility including degeneration and rupture of the cranial cruciate ligament (one of the ligaments of the knee). This causes pain and lameness, which may be mild or severe depending on the stage of the disease and other factors, and which tends to progress as chronic arthritis develops. Patella luxation is one of the most common orthopaedic conditions encountered in dogs and Labrador Retrievers have been found to be 3.3 times more likely to be affected than other breeds.

28 JANUARY – 28 FEBRUARY 2019 RESCUE AND ANIMAL CARE

Some breeds of spaniel are prone to blood disorders such as Primary Immune-Mediated Haemolytic Anaemia. This triggers antibodies to be produced that attack the red blood cells causing anaemia, malaise, pain and distress that can last for weeks or months. The above are just a few examples and there are many others. Not all dogs in these breeds will be severely affected, but in many breeds genetic diseases are common – and in some cases are unrecognised by owners as they are considered simply to be a characteristic of the breed. What can be done to improve the welfare of dogs and other species that have welfare problems as a result of selective breeding? Breeding has resulted in the problem and, in principle, breeding should be able to also reduce the incidence of genetic diseases by breeding only from those individual animals that are not affected by the conditions. Tackling genetic welfare problems, whether in dogs or other species, requires the concerted efforts of breeders, geneticists, vets, pet owners and others. In particular, it requires a much greater public understanding of the extent of the problems within specific breeds, and of the implications for animal welfare. To help provide information on the types of disease that affect breeds of dog and other species, UFAW’s website has information not just about the physical effects of genetic diseases but also assessments of their effects on the animal’s quality of life and what you can do to help eradicate them. Drinking regularly is important for your cat’s health as it helps ensure proper kidney function and helps prevent crystal formation that can lead to urinary tract infection. Since cats are picky drinkers, Catit developed a fantastic range of cat drinking fountains. Cat drinking fountains are recommended by vets as an effective way to encourage your cat to drink more. A fountain provides your cat with a constant source of clean, healthy and flowing water. Tap water is recirculated through a filter to remove harmful chemicals which helps to prevent urinary tract diseases. Catit fountains hold between 1.5-3 litres of water, providing your kitty with a plentiful supply of water to last the whole day and maximising time between refills. LABRADOR LIFELINE TRUST

HAS A RECORD YEAR FOR REHOMING LABRADORS 2018 saw a massive increase in young Labradors being placed into rescue for various reasons. The main being change of circumstances or buyers not doing their homework in relation to their lifestyle and that of the dog.

I

t is ironic and probably the same in all breed recues that when there are lots of young dogs available then adopters want older versions that are perhaps a little steadier and with a few manners already instilled in them. So many young dogs come into rescue that have obviously received no training or socialisation whatsoever. They are frankly manic and some are aggressive towards other dogs.

It comes down to patience and tolerance as no rescue dog is perfect but is it not worth adopting one and giving it that second chance at a good life rather than purchasing a puppy – you have my word you won’t regret it. Anne Carter – Labrador Lifeline Trust

Bramley

This is a trait that was rarely seen in the Labrador, but media has a lot to answer for in their portrayal of this popular breed. Labradors are always seen as the loveable buffoon that gets on with everything and everyone when in reality this is far from the truth. The rescue dogs that come knocking at our door are rarely perfect, many are over-exuberant, have no conception of special awareness and chances are will send you flying in a heartbeat. Its called love! On the plus side with a bit of work by our experienced foster homes these dogs are gently moulded into a dog that the adopter is proud to own. Take my own dog, Bramley he came to me at 5.5 years and had been 24

ignored for most of his life. He had learned how to open the gate and escape whenever the opportunity presented itself. He became a firm favourite with the local Dog Warden and in the end, the owners were not prepared to pay his mounting fines. If you hold the view that you cant teach an older dog new tricks then I beg to differ. All you need is time and patience and more patience. After 12 months Bramley and I had thoroughly bonded and each day his training came along in leaps and bounds. No longer did he jump higher than anyone he met out on his walks. He no longer pulled like the Eurostar as he had been trained on a harness, which is so much kinder and protected his throat from damage. He is a delight and a pleasure now, I am proud to be his owner, and he is a wonderful ambassador for the Trust. Rescues have to work very hard to get their dogs into the right homes and naturally this entails a lot of processes from vetting the dog and making sure that the new home can cope with it. Giving advice on after care and ensuring that adopters have access to the very best advice and help. Here at the Trust we have always subscribed to the view that we do not just dump a dog in a home and disappear we are there for them 24/7 as we want this

28 JANUARY – 28 FEBRUARY 2019 RESCUE AND ANIMAL CARE

adoption to work and the dog to have a forever home. Our success rate using this method means that we have a 99% non return. The Trust do not discriminate between the old and infirm dog with arthritis or the youngster who may have problems. We recently took in a 16 week old puppy that had jumped up and fractured a leg in two places. The owner could not nurse the dog and decided the best thing was to turn it into rescue. This dog came to us with an external fixator in place and weeks of rehabilitation ahead. Our foster home leapt into action and took him in without turning a hair. Now two operations later he is once again a fit and happy little dog. We are always in need of foster homes who can help us put right some of the things that are wrong. It can be very rewarding to see the dog with either a medical or training problem go to a new home where we know the adopters will be equally as proud of their dog as I am of mine. n Visit www.labrador-lifeline.co.uk info@labrador-lifeline.com Tel: 01256 884027. Help us make a difference

to the lives of many millions of cats globally?

O

ne of the great things about working for a charity like International Cat Care is that you get to meet so many wonderful people. People (like you!) who are not just concerned for their own well-loved kitties snuggled up at home but who also care about the less fortunate cats – the ones that they see on the streets where they live or when they are away on holiday or business. They tell us about their sadness when they see them suffering, their feelings of helplessness at the scale of problem and, above all, their overwhelming wish to help. The one question they always ask us is...

'What's the best thing we can we do to help unowned cats around the world?' iCatCare has asked itself the same question. Our mission is to help all cats – owned and unowned – wherever they are in the world. But we're not a traditional cat charity. Our expertise is in feline information, advice and training – so how can we best use our skills for unowned cats – how can we empower people to help? • We have helped train vets and volunteers in Trap, Neuter and Return techniques and provide our Feral Cat Manual free online (https://icatcare.org/publication/feral-cat-manual) • We encourage governments, vets, local authorities, communities and other charities to collaborate and galvanise awareness through our International Declaration of Responsibilities to Cats (https://icatcare.org/declaration) • We're looking at advances in nonsurgical population control which could make a massive difference to humanely managing street cat colonies But we have also had many people ask for advice on how to help cats best in homing centres – how to ensure their welfare, www.rescueandanimalcare.com

Our mission is to help all cats – owned and unowned – wherever they are in the world. minimise stress and reduce the time they spend there – using our knowledge of cats, what can we all learn and practically do? Homing centres are amazing – dedicated animal lovers who work incredibly hard and often against ridiculous odds. It's a tough job, especially for the smaller centres around the world operating on a shoestring with a handful of volunteers. They told us they often feel exhausted and frustrated at the scale of the challenge, managing the health and wellbeing of the cats and the huge difficulty of finding homes. They asked us if we could develop resources and training like those we provide to the veterinary sector but tailored to the specific needs of homing centres. And so we are creating Cat Friendly Homing – a new project providing tools and training that give homing centre staff and volunteers confidence and help them rehome more cats. We have been collaborating with homing charities to work out our ideas and participants told us that they felt more confident with their daily decisions – and homing rates went up significantly.

So what happens next? • Firstly, we're building a new information website for homing centres that will be free, comprehensive, up to date and tailored to homing centres, bringing together the latest information in a way that can be used by those doing the difficult job of finding homes for cats. • We're also developing affordable distance learning courses for those interested in further study.

So will you help us to make a difference to the lives of many millions of cats globally? We know that you care about unowned cats and together we can make a better world for them. There are lots of ways to help • Please sign the International Declaration of Responsibilities to Cats https://icatcare.org/declaration Almost 3000 people have already signed up to show they care and to look at all the areas where we need to take responsibility for cats • Please donate to raise funds for the new homing centre website. You can make a one off donation or set up a regular amount https://icatcare.org/support-us/donate • Hold a cat-themed cocktail party with your friends and have fun while raising funds https://icatcare.org/cat-cocktails/find-out-more • Remember street cats in your will with a legacy to support International Cat Care https://icatcare.org/legacy However you choose to support iCatCare, it means a great deal to us and everything you do is hugely appreciated. If you have any questions or would like to talk about supporting Cat Friendly Homing please just get in touch – we're always delighted to chat with people like you! n Shelley Gregory-Jones shelley.gregory-jones@icatcare.org International Cat Care https://icatcare.org/ Charity No. 1117342

De-icers Can be dangerous around Pets! This week as we get the first real taste of a winter freeze many people will be reaching for their de-icers but it is important to be cautious because many common de-icers are dangerous for dogs and cats causing serious illness and irritation of the paws. Types of De-icer De-icers are products that lower the freezing point of water and keep roads and pathways clear. Slippery sidewalks may be dangerous but so too are some of the de-icing ingredients.

The most common de-icers are: n n n n

Salt (Sodium chloride) Potassium chloride Magnesium chloride Calcium chloride

Ingesting large quantities of salt can be deadly for cats and dogs

causing mild ingestion, gastrointestinal upsets. Furthermore, salt can irritate paws. Potassium chloride is severly irritating if ingested and similarly Magnesium chloride cause stomach problems and can aggrevate kidney problems. Calcium chloride is the most hazardous of all causing major gastrointestinal distress and severe irritation of the skin and the paws. Fortunately, pets have to eat large quantities of de-icer to become truly ill but it can happen. Dogs can apidly become addicted to salt in the same way as humans.

The Safest De-icers The alternatives include: n Kitty litter which is just plain old clay. Whilst it will not

actually melt ice, it does stop the surface being slippery. n Sand has a similar effect and is totally unappetising as far

as cats and dogs are concerned. n Safe Paw and other pet safe de-icers that melt snow are

available on the market. The majority of pet-safe de-icers are based on urea that is specifically formulated for pet safety. Urea is less toxic than other de-icing ingredients but do check the label and make sure it does not contain salt. Environmentally friendly liquid de-icers that are non-toxic and biodegradeable are even better. Polar Products offer such a product called PolarThaw™

As a precaution: n Do not walk your pet where salt is used. n Wash your pet’s paws after the walk to remove any

irritants. n Use booties to protect puppy feet if the weather is

especially severe. Given these precautions, snow and ice does not have to mean cancelling the walkies! Dogs need at least half an hour a day of exercise to keep them fit and well and prevent obesity. Cats just cannot be that easily controlled. n If you require any help or advice, please contact the Polar

Products on 01608 686626 (Open 8am to 8pm, 7 days per week) or visit www.polarproductseurope.co.uk

The trained volunteers on our confidential telephone and email support line offer a sympathetic ear and practical advice. We take around 8,000 support calls and emails a year. Raising much needed awareness of our free support line is crucial in being able to help more people.

Training for helping bereaved Pet Owners In addition to our support services, we also offer a number of training courses aimed at anyone working within the animal industry who may need the vital and specialised skills in dealing with bereaved pet owners. Our awardwinning, eight-week CPD accredited e-learning course covers a range of topics in depth. The course helps provide key skills, ensures appropriate and considerate end-of life conversations

and combats against compassion fatigue. We also offer a short course and one-hour webinars that act as an introduction to pet bereavement issues. For more information or to book a place visit bluecross.org.uk/courses-professionals-andvolunteers

Tim transported Delilah from Fernlea Vets in Bristol down to Taunton

Transporting Pets in Comfort and Safety Hi! I'm Tim Dunton and I started UK Dog Transport in 2014 to help pet owners to move their dogs and cats safely around mainland UK and Europe.

I

am fully licensed and insured with ample dog handling experience, as well as being fully dog firstaid trained. My services are available 7 days a week, giving you complete flexibility. I am fully licensed and insured with ample dog handling experience, and dog first-aid trained. I ensure that your pets reach their destinations in comfort and safety – they have roomy, air-conditioned pods in the van and we take regular hydration and comfort stops. UK Dog Transport still works closely with many pet rescue partners and Anne Lewis at the Lost Souls Sanctuary explains: www.rescueandanimalcare.com

appointment is some distance away and you have no transport! That's where UK Dog Transport comes in, with my Vet Transport Run service. If your dog or cat needs taking to or from an appointment but you can't make it, UK Dog Transport can take your pet there and back for you – even if the vet is at the other end of the country! I transported Delilah from Fernlea Vets in Bristol down to Taunton recently, when a big motorway snarl-up meant that her owner couldn't get there in time. This lovely lady is now safely home, and recovering well. Another popular service is one that I personally love; transporting rescues to their new homes and families, who are so excited to meet them. This is Wilson, a handsome Mastiff Cross boy from Last Hope Rescue, arriving at his new home in West Wales. If you have a pet that needs transporting to or from a vet appointment or a new home, give me a call. I'm ready to help!

"Lost Souls Sanctuary use Tim because he is consistently reliable, very reasonably priced and above all he is wonderful with the dogs he transports and they always arrive in a calm state. We take in some of the most difficult dogs, many of which have been very problematic during the journey to the UK. It is a testimonial to Tim's skills as a handler that he is able to calm them down."

Pets to Vets (and back again) It can be really stressful for both you and your pet when a visit to the vet is necessary – doubly so if that

Charlie's Tale: Escaping the Capital of Canine Cruelty There are thousands of street dogs in Romania, many of which are incarcerated in public shelters. Dog catchers beat and kill them using barbaric methods such as injecting them with anti-freeze or covering their kennels in caustic soda – dogs are treated like vermin. UK Dog Transport works with A Better Life Dog Rescue and Noah's Ark Romanian Rescue, as rescue and transport partners. Charlie (pictured) was in a public shelter at 5 months old, without much human contact. Vanda Kizmaz, the founder of Noah's Ark Romanian Rescue, picks up the story: "We arranged to bring Charlie to the UK in March 2018. On arrival, he was suffering terribly from Demodex ('red mange') and was so petrified that he would poo himself if anyone came near him." Charlie didn't do too well in foster care, where it was too busy for this scared boy. Vanda continues: "As the UK rescue due to take Charlie rejected him because of his skin problems, he went into an emergency foster home for a few weeks where

Vanda says: "Once Tim and Gilly took Charlie under their wing, he started to really flourish, both in his health and in his confidence." With time and patience, Charlie has blossomed into a really nice, well-rounded dog.

Charlie being moved from Shelter

treatment was started on his skin and the hard task of socialising him began." UK Dog Transport was brought in to transfer Charlie from the emergency foster home to kennels for a while, to rehabilitate him. Tim visited him once a week there and could see he was still struggling with the noise and bustle. Tim asked if he and Gilly could adopt him.

Please consider adopting a dog from Romania. They might be difficult to start with, but the journey from terrified pup to a bundle of boundless energy and joy is incredibly rewarding. UK Dog Transport 07581 004473 tim@ukdogtransport.co.uk www.ukdogtransport.co.uk www.facebook.com/UKDogTransport

It Can Only Happen

In Animal Rescue . . .

Me: “Hello! Are you interested in finding a pet today?”

Customer: “Yep.” Me: “And you want to adopt two more?”

Customer: *with young son* “Yes. I would like to adopt two cats.”

Customer: “Yes.”

Me:“That’s fantastic! We have many to choose from.”

Me:“But your landlord says you can only have one animal in your home?”

Customer: “Too bad my landlord won’t let me have more than one pet at my apartment.” *handing me her phone* “Here’s a picture of my son’s cat.”

Customer: “Oh, the two cats I adopt here won’t live with me! My father just passed away and his house is lonely so they’ll live there.”

Me: “You already have a pet?”

Me:“I’m so sorry to hear about your father, but we can’t do an adoption for cats to live alone in a house.” Customer: “Why not?” Me: “Because we want to make sure that the animals would be properly cared for and if no one lives with them they could run out of food and water or get trapped during an emergency and you might not know about it for days.” Customer: “Well, I’m paying for the air

conditioning to be on at his house so someone should live there!” Me: “Maybe you could live out the lease at your apartment then move in to your dad’s house.” Customer: “No, I don’t want to have to move my stuff. What if I just tell you I live there?” Me: “Since I already know that that is a lie, I would not feel comfortable doing the adoption.” Customer: “Do you even care about the animals here?!” Me: “Yes, that’s why I don’t want them it have to live alone in a house. They deserve to be cared for.” Customer: “Maybe I’ll just spend every night at the house so I know they’d be okay!” Me: “Would your son stay with you?” Customer: “No! He’s afraid of the house!” Me:“So, you’re willing to let your young son live alone just so you can adopt these cats?” Customer:“I’m gonna tell you whatever you need to hear so you’ll give me these animals!” Me:: “Ma’am, I truly am sorry that you lost your father. But the situation you are in right now simply makes me unable to let you adopt an animal from us. If you move or can provide us with written proof that your landlord will allow more pets, come back and see what cats we have at that time.”

HRH The Duchess of Sussex pays official Royal visit to Mayhew after announcing charity Patronage

The Duchess chatting to Wully Struthers and his two dogs Azzy and Gallis

Mayhew are proud and delighted to have welcomed The Duchess of Sussex on Her Royal Highness’s first visit as our Patron he Duchess met with CEO Caroline Yates, Mayhew staff and volunteers; as well as members of the community we’ve helped and animals under our care to see first-hand the range and impact of the ground-breaking work we do in London and overseas. Representative Deputy Lieutenant for Hammersmith and Fulham Mr Kevin McGrath joined Caroline Yates to greet The Duchess, who then led Her Royal Highness on a guided tour of our Home and some of our projects. The Duchess was first introduced to one of our TheraPaws teams, Claire Godwin and collie mix breed Roobarb, and two elderly residents of the Lawnfield Care Home where they visit on a regular basis. Her Royal Highness heard first-hand how

T

The Duchess meeting Foxy 42

The Duchess finished her visit with cuddles from Minnie, a Jack Russell Terrier puppy who is shortly going to be available for adoption Roobarb’s visits to the care home provide companionship, promote emotional and physical wellbeing and benefit the lives of all residents –from inspiring happy memories of previously owned pets to encouraging new friendships and comforting those suffering from loneliness. The Duchess then stopped to chat to Wully Struthers and his two dogs Azzy and Gallis, who we looked after as part of our Pet Refuge scheme when Wully was homeless and needed to access rehab. Speaking alongside Head of Animal Welfare, Zoe Edwards, Wully revealed how Mayhew has helped him and his dogs turn their lives around since he first met Zoe 11 years ago. In our Cattery, The Duchess met two local people, Miriam and Ted, who formed a life-changing friendship over the discovery of a feral cat colony. AJ Ford, Deputy Head of Animal Welfare, explained how we have worked to control the colony size through our Trap, Neuter, Return programme, and have worked with the community to educate them on living with this type of London wildlife. Head Teacher of nearby school North Bridge House, Christine McLelland, who recently found a litter of kittens in her shed then joined the conversation. The Duchess met the kittens - named Leo, Percy, Sasha, Mia and Tiger-Lily by the children at North Bridge House – and heard how they are now being looked after by Mayhew until they are ready to find a new home, and how they

have inspired the students to fundraise for Mayhew over coming months. Caroline Yates then introduced The Duchess to one of our happily rehomed puppies – Maggie, previously known as Truffle. Maggie’s new owner recently adopted the Jack Russell from Mayhew, after our Animal Welfare Officers rescued her from a suspected puppy farm in October last year. Finally, HRH was introduced to Dr Abdul Jalil Mohammadzai DVM (known as Dr Mo) and Head Vet Nurse Gillian Rich RVN, who spoke to The Duchess about Mayhew‘s veterinary work here and in the countries we work in overseas. Dr Mo explained how he and his team have implemented leading animal welfare initiatives within Afghanistan, overcoming an extremely challenging environment to control and prevent the spread of rabies and canine overpopulation. Gillian Rich informed The Duchess about the community-minded veterinary work we do here in London, in our Community Vet Clinic, including offering free and low cost vaccinations and treatment to animals and owners in need. The Duchess finished her visit with cuddles from Minnie, a Jack Russell Terrier puppy who is shortly going to be available for adoption, and Foxy – a Pomeranian who has just found her forever family. n To find out more about Mayhew’s work, visit www.themayhew.org www.rescueandanimalcare.com

Trevor having 3 legs is no issue at all, he enjoys life to the full. He has playtime in the garden chasing his ball.

He would like his owners to be around most of the time with minimal home alone and would like a nice sized garden.

He would like to be the only pet in the home and will need a secure garden for some off lead games!

She will need to be the only dog in the home with no small animals or cats.

He likes playing with toys as well as going for nice long walks and really is a bundle of energy!

This fun little pair enjoy going for walks and having a good play in the garden and would love to learn new tricks to keep them busy. Both of them can be a little shy of meeting new people and could live with sensible teenagers but cannot live with other dogs.

His home alone will need building up gradually but once settled in he could possibly be left for about 3 to 4 hours.

Dotty is a sweet girl, who enjoys some fuss and attention. She is a cat who loves playing and does go crazy over some catnip.

Ideally he would love lots of things to keep him active in the new home, I’m sure we can help with ideas.

Lily is a lovely lady with bags of personality who can be a little independent but still loves to sit on someone's knee and have a good stroke.

Missy is looking to be the only pet in the home and could possibly live with older children who are sensible and calm.

I've been looking after my kittens for a while now, and to have my own home would be stupendous!

She loves the company of people and will quite happily sit next to someone on the sofa.

I am a bit nervous in new situations but if you give me time you’ll soon see I have a big personality! I love to explore new things (and climb inside boxes)!

Cookie loves lots of fuss and attention. She does enjoy playing when she’s had some fuss.

Cats Protection launches search for the UK’s most marvellous moggy The UK’s leading feline welfare charity Cats Protection is calling on cat owners nationwide to nominate their furry friends in this year’s National Cat Awards. For over a decade, the Awards have celebrated the difference cats make to owners’ lives by highlighting heart-warming stories of devotion, companionship and courage. Entries open on Tuesday 15 January and owners have until noon on Friday 8 March to nominate their cat for one of five categories: • Hero Cat – Cats that save the day • Most Caring Cat – Cats that positively impact a person’s health or wellbeing • Furr-ever Friends – Tales of friendship between children and cats • Outstanding Rescue Cat – Fabulous felines adopted from animal charities • Purina® Better Together Celebrating the special bond that has transformed and enriched the lives of both a feline and human

The National Cat Awards is sponsored by PURINA® and a panel of celebrity cat-lovers will select the winners. The winning cats’ owners will then be presented with their trophies at a star-studded ceremony at London’s Savoy Hotel on Thursday 8 August – coinciding with International Cat Day. Cats Protection’s Awards organiser Kate Bunting said: “This event is the highlight of the feline calendar and gives us the chance to celebrate everything we love about cats. “Every year, the entries we receive go to show why cats make such great pets – whether it’s for helping their owners through times of sadness or loss, heroic moggies who come to the rescue, or brave felines who survive against the odds.” The overall winner will inherit the title of National Cat of the Year from Theo, who helped his owner Charlotte Dixon survive a potentially fatal blood clot. Theo followed in the paw prints of a long line of feline heroes honoured by Cats Protection. They include Genie,

who helped schoolgirl Evie Henderson battle bone cancer; Tink, who saved her owners from a house fire, and Jessi-Cat, who was celebrated for helping a seven-year-old boy cope with Selective Mutism. Broadcaster and writer Andrew Collins, whose own cat Gerry was previously a stray, will be one of a panel of celebrity judges selecting the National Cat of the Year. He said: “Cats make a house a home and whatever stage of life they join you, it improves everything. The National Cat

Awards honour acts of extraordinary bravery, empathy and loyalty. Humans are lucky to be chosen and adopted by cats of all ages.” For further information about the awards email nationalcatawards@cats.org.uk or phone 03000 12 12 12. If you would like to ask Simon for some pet advice then log onto their interesting site www.ardmorevets.co.uk

I am just about to get a new puppy; do you have any advice for taking them home and getting them settled in? Simon Bailey

Vet Simon answers your questions

I want to have my cat spayed, what actually happens and when is it best to do so?

A day or two before collection of your puppy, take a blanket to place in the puppy’s bed, then, when you take the pup home; transfer the blanket to the puppy’s new bed. This will try to reduce some of the stress involved with the transfer, hopefully giving some feeling of security. Also try to make sure everything is prepared with water bowls, bedding, grooming equipment and toys. It is also worth asking the puppies’ breeder what they have been fed and to get the same or ask to have some for the first few days in your home to again reduce the chance of digestive upset during the move. If you choose to change the diet it is advisable to do this gradually over at least a week. The best place for your puppy’s bed is a draught-free corner or room. Kitchens are a good place as they tend to be warm and to have washable floors. Remember the bed is your puppy’s refuge, so keep young children away from it, and never allow a tired puppy to be dragged out of bed to play – your pet is not a toy! On the first few nights in your home, your puppy is likely to cry or whimper. This is quite normal and is simply because they are in a strange environment and away from their litter mates for the first time. Before you go to bed, play with your puppy to induce sleep. After the first few nights, the pup should settle quite happily. Try to keep the bedtime routine as consistent as possible. Toilet training is another big change for all

Starting around the age of 6-8 months kittens, both male and female, start to reach sexual maturity. At this stage they start to show altered behaviour patterns and become capable of breeding and producing their own kittens. For the majority of their owners they do not want kittens, and will not have the time or inclination to do so. With a large number of unwanted kittens and cats in already rescue centres looking for new homes, breeding a litter should be considered carefully. The operation is referred to by a number of names, neutering, de-sexing, castration in the male, and spaying in the case of the female. Neutering a cat not only prevents

concerned. Your new puppy has to learn not to ‘toilet ‘ in the house, but as with all training this will take time and needs positive reinforcement from you. Always take your puppy out first thing in the morning and then again at meal times and at other times at regular intervals. If they should have an accident try not to be angry just take them straight out to the garden again. When they do ‘perform’ correctly give them plenty of praise. Remember some puppies take longer than others to learn – the same as children!! Chewing is natural for puppies, partly for play and social development, partly to help dental development. Do not discourage chewing; just try to ensure they only chew things you have chosen for them to chew, rather than your shoes. Rawhide chews, nylon bones and large hard biscuits are ideal. If the puppy does chew something inappropriate, distract your pet by arranging for something interesting to happen elsewhere and then give something else to chew.

unwanted pregnancies but can adjust/alter certain behaviours, and will greatly reduce the risk of certain diseases. In the case of the female the spaying operation involves surgically removing the ovaries and uterus under a general anaesthetic. The cat will need to have the food withheld from the night before surgery. The fur will be clipped at the site of surgery, and sutures will be apparent when you collect the cat later in the day. They will not normally need to stay overnight. They will receive pain relief during and after the surgery, and will be seen 7-10 days later to check the wound and remove the sutures

Is your pet your hero? Nominate them now for 2019 Blue Cross Medal Soap-star Hayley Tamaddon and animalloving celebs join the search for hero pets to receive charity accolade. Blue Cross pet charity is calling for stories about hero pets from across the nation as nominations open for the prestigious Blue Cross Medal. Animal lovers across the UK are being encouraged to nominate inspirational pets who could be the next medal-winner. The Blue Cross Medal has celebrated inspirational pets for almost 80 years, and awarded its first in 1940 to a dog called La Cloche for saving his owner from drowning during the Second World War after a German torpedo hit their ship. Bravery and companionship isn’t always as dramatic as La Cloche’s story, so last year Blue Cross opened the medal up to more nominees in the hopes to hear about the everyday pet hero who is changing lives in all kinds of ways; from cats who’re there to listen when there is no one else, dogs who help with social anxiety; guinea pigs who are a child’s best friend; any pet who helps people in any way, big or small. Last year’s winner was an incredible pet. A young mastiff called Lemmy won the award www.rescueandanimalcare.com

after being nominated by his owner for saving the lives of her two sons. Rescue-dog Lemmy brought his young owner Max back from depression and suicidal thoughts and turned his life around. A true hero in every sense of the word. Sally de la Bedoyere, Blue Cross Chief Executive, said: “Pets are amazing, they help us in so many ways, from rescuing us from loneliness to teaching us new things, and even saving lives. The Blue Cross Medal is a wonderful way to draw attention to the incredible things our pets do for us every day and to celebrate them. We’re very excited to hear all the amazing stories to be sent through and can’t wait to pick the next medal winner.” Animal-loving celebrities are helping support the Blue Cross Medal this year, including soap-star Hayley Tamaddon, who also partook in a photoshoot with homeless pets at one of the charities rehoming centres. Embarrassing Bodies’s Dr. Dawn and The Bill’s Lisa Maxwell are also showing support and broadening the search. Emmerdale and Coronation Street’s Hayley Tamaddon said: “Pets have always played a wonderful part in my life and I’ve been

grateful to each and every one of them for it. The wonderful German Shepherd I had growing up called Sheeba would be my strong contender for the Blue Cross Medal nomination – she thought she was my bodyguard, she was always close by me and she made me feel so special and loved.

“Pets do so much for us and the Blue Cross Medal is all about celebrating that, so I would urge anyone with a special pet in their life to nominate them right away!” n The Blue Cross Medal is open to pets that have done something brave, life-changing partnerships, assistance animals and serving or working animals. Deadline for entries is 15 February 2019. To nominate a pet and find out more, visit www.bluecross.org.uk/medal

Harriet F3 & Ben M3

I adore going for walks and my ball is my most favourite thing ever!!! I will happily play tug, or fetch all day!

We hope to be able to home them as a pair. Caspar and Evie are beautiful to look at but very timid so would be best suited to an adult home or older children happy to observe them. They are not aggressive and can be checked over once caught.

He doesn’t really like being picked up but is happier to approach you in his own time. He loves spring greens.

He is a lovely cat, who is enjoying human attention more with each passing day. A patient home is needed.

Ben and Harriet have been with us for over two years. Harriet is inquisitive and the larger of the two. She likes a bit of a dig. Ben has recently become much more friendly, possibly because we have so few other rabbits with us at the moment.

PACT Animal Sanctuary

Luna is more friendly than Eclipse. Both love being outside and a bit of a dig!

Bully M2

KitKat M6

Teresa F2

Charley is a very happy dog who can be mischievous, jumps up, will chew and needs a patient owner who can train her in all aspects.

He is nervous around new people and does not like other dogs. Suggs needs an experienced adult only home used to dealing with naughty terriers.

He just needs sensible owners who will understand the needs of a deprived puppy and give him the forever home he truly deserves.

We will consider a family with teenagers, or adult only home, with no visiting small children.

He is super friendly. He loves attention and would be happy to be fussed all day.

This beautiful girl needs a loving owner in a quiet home where she can learn to trust people again.
