Dear Readers

Welcome to our Summer double month magazine, which I hope you enjoy reading! Rescue and Animal Care Magazine will be back in late September with our next issue and in the meantime my designer and I are having a little break to recharge our well worn batteries.

If you need to get in touch we will still be ensuring any important calls and emails are responded to.

Happy Holidays!

Love Jennifer x

Dear Friends

It’s nearly time for me to have a couple of weeks off from my lovely job here at the magazine.

As you know I type my column every month and this can make my paws ache. And it’s no easy task navigating the key board on my computer.

Sometimes during my writing my concentration goes when I daydream of food, playing ball and catching up with my pals in the park. When this happens I get a row of jumbled letters like this xwgybkk yvfssssrf!!!

This is the first time Mistress has time off too since Christmas other than the odd day. She’s going away for a few days soon and leaving me with a friend of hers who will look after me and spoil me rotten!

You will notice that I look less furry and rather fetching after a groom with Country Tails Mobile Dog Grooming covering Sudbury Suffolk and surrounding areas 07496 963563

Natasha came to my house and gave me a senior cut so I didn’t have to stand for too long. She was very patient

Me and Natasha after having a senior cut

and we had breaks in between so I could rest a while. Just look at all this fur! And look at me! I feel much cooler now.

It’s been too hot for many walks but I’ve been playing a lot with my toys to keep me active and amused

I’m signing off now and wish you all a lovely summer I’ll be back with my column at the end of September

Emotional Wellbeing Matters

How often have you really thought about your behaviour today? The answer, I am guessing, is not much. This is because we often do not think about our behaviour, instead we just behave!

And, importantly, how we behave will be in part driven by how we have been feeling physically, emotionally and socially, and the situations we have found ourselves in. We are likely to behave differently depending on what mood we are in, how stressed we are, if we are upset, angry, in pain, happy, safe and so on.

This is because emotional wellbeing matters for us – if we feel safe, free from pain and able to cope with what the world is throwing at us, we are likely to behave in a calm and confident way. If we are stressed, in pain, feeling under pressure, socially anxious etc our

behaviour is likely to reflect that. It is no different for the animals that we share our lives with!

I specialise in working with dogs who are aggressive. The common mistake many caregivers fall in to is to focus on the behaviour being the problem and seek to find ways to ‘correct’ or change that. However, the reality is the behaviour is part of the communication of the real underlying problem. Many dogs who are aggressive, for example, are trying to communicate pain, and that is not just physical pain, but emotional and social pain as well. This again is why emotional wellbeing

matters – how the dogs feel is a major drive to their response. Help them to feel better and the behaviour will change. This is universal for all animals. Relief is one of the most important words in behavioural support. Again, I invite you to consider your own behaviour. When you experience negative feelings and emotions, the reason is to motivate you to find relief from those feelings. For example, if you are in pain you will seek pain relief. If you find yourself in a social pressured situation, you will see relief by finding a way to exit.

Many of the more challenging

behaviours we experience with our companion animals are just their own attempts at finding relief. It is such a shame that not only are their attempts to communicate their needs sometime ignored, but also that this attempt at communication is wrongly labelled as ‘bad’ or ‘naughty’ and they are told off or ‘corrected’ for it. Working with the most complex and potentially dangerous cases, I can tell you that no animal is safer to be around by being made to feel less safe!

This is why Pet Remedy is on a mission to promote a better understanding of emotional wellbeing for all animals. Behaviour science is showing us that the best outcomes are found when we support an animal’s innate needs for safety and relief, and

not just force them to ‘behave’ in a way that does not reflect those needs. When they feel safe, are free from pain and enjoy positive social attachment with their caregivers, many behavioural challenges can be helped and even avoided in the first place.

“No safe amount of time to leave dogs in hot cars”

Dogs Trust Basildon issues advice to keep dogs safe during heatwave

As the country finally basks in some summer sunshine, Dogs Trust Basildon has issued a reminder to dog owners that there is no safe amount of time to leave dogs alone in a car during the hot weather – even a few minutes could prove to be fatal.

The nation’s largest dog welfare charity is warning owners that the temperature inside a car could rise to dangerously high levels in just a few minutes, leading to any dogs inside the car suffering with heatstroke. In some cases, heatstroke can lead to the death of the dog.

Dogs Trust has shared its Dogs Die in Hot Cars video to highlight the issue of leaving dogs in cars on hot days. If you see a dog in a car in distress, the charity advises that members of the public call 999.

Dogs Trust is also reminding owners that exercising dogs in warm weather can lead to severe health problems in our canine companions – three quarters of heat stroke cases are triggered by exercise – and even short walks in the heat should be avoided

Dogs can’t regulate their body heat in the same way as humans, and dogs can overheat in all temperatures, so extra care needs to be taken during warm weather. If dogs are too hot and can’t sufficiently reduce their body temperature by panting, they may develop heatstroke which can be fatal.

Heatstroke can affect any type of dog, but certain breeds and types of dogs are at increased risk, including brachycephalic or flat-faced breeds such as English Bulldogs, Pugs and French Bulldogs, as well as older dogs, overweight dogs and those with pre-existing medical conditions.

Symptoms of heatstroke in dogs include panting heavily, drooling excessively, appearing lethargic, drowsy or uncoordinated, vomiting and / or diarrhoea and collapsing.

says:

“This glorious summer weather is great to see after so many weeks of rain, but while the sunshine might be great for us, hot weather can cause problems for our canine friends.

“Dogs can’t regulate their body heat in the same way as humans, so extra care needs to be taken, especially when exercising or travelling in the car. In this weather, there is no safe amount of time to leave your dog alone in the car, even if you leave the window open.

“The good news is that steps can be taken to prevent our dogs from suffering such as only walking dogs in the coolest parts of the day, reducing their exercise, ensuring dogs have access to somewhere cool and shady to lay down and making sure they always have access to fresh water.

“And of course, never leave your dog alone in a hot car, not even for a short amount of time.

“If you do suspect your dog has heatstroke, start cooling them and call your vet immediately as it is vital they receive the care they need as soon as possible.”

Dogs Trust has additionally issued the following advice to support dog owners during this period of hot weather:

• Avoid walking or doing activities either indoors or outdoors with your dog at the hottest times of the day, so early morning or later in the evening is often best.

• Always take plenty of water with you when out with your dog and make sure they have access to fresh water at home at all times.

• Tarmac can get very hot in the sun – check it with your hand before letting your dog walk on it so they don’t burn their paws. If you cannot avoid taking your dog out in the car on a hot day, even if travelling a short distance, avoid travelling during the hottest times of the day.

• Never leave your dog in a vehicle on a warm day. Not even with the window open. (Leaving your pet alone in a vehicle or tied up outside can also put them at greater risk of being stolen.)

• Use a cooling mat or wrap an ice pack or frozen water bottle in a tea towel for your pet to lie on if they wish.

• Use cold treats from the fridge for added moisture or make an ice lolly from pet-friendly ingredients.

• Don’t let your pet get sunburnt - use pet-safe sun cream.

• Know the early signs of heatstroke which include panting, difficulty breathing, tiredness, less keen to play, drooling and vomiting, and take immediate action.

If your dog has collapsed or is struggling to breathe, call your nearest vet immediately. They can advise if your dog is suffering from heatstroke and what to do. While you contact your vet, here are some things you can do to help cool your dog down:

• move the dog to a shaded and cool area

• place them in the breeze of a fan, or in an air-conditioned room

• offer them drinking water

• start cooling them down by soaking their body with tap water, avoiding their face

• lie them on a cold wet towel or cooling mat, but don’t place a towel over them as this can raise their temperature.

The gift of friendship

For a unique and thoughtful gift, why not sponsor a Redwings Adoption Star horse or donkey for a friend or loved one, or even yourself?

Standing at an impressive 16.3 hands high, stunning Adoption Star

Shire cross Fox is a true gentle giant who loves to bend his head over the fence for a cuddle with his visitors.

While Fox now enjoys a peaceful life in his paddock at the charity’s Caldecott Visitor Centre, in Norfolk, his future was not always so certain. This handsome gent arrived at Redwings in 2010 as part of a large group of horses when he was just a few months old. Their owner had sadly passed away and no one was able to look after them.

Fox has a condition which means he experiences stiffness in his legs so his chances of finding a new home to suit his needs were slim. However, he now has a permanent home at the

Sanctuary under the watchful eye of Redwings’ vet team.

From just £2 per month, you can sponsor Fox for yourself or a loved one and ensure he and his four-legged friends continue to enjoy happy and healthy lives at Redwings.

What’s included in your adoption?

• Your Adoption Star’s photo and rescue story

• A certificate of adoption

• A bookmark featuring your Adoption Star

• A factsheet all about your chosen animal

• Three postal updates a year from your new friend, including one at Christmas!

• Quarterly email updates with photos from your Adoption Star

• An invitation to their birthday party –yes, really!

Sponsoring a horse, pony or donkey at Redwings is a fantastic way to support our charity and make a new friend in the process. Costing just a few pounds a month and with a huge range of Adoption Stars to choose from, just like Fox, an adoption makes a wonderful gift for a loved one or even to yourself!

Just look at these smiles! Three Collies looking for homes

Roxy is a 2 year old neutered tri coloured short coated collie. She originally came into our care from another rescue after being found as a stray. She then spent 3 days in a home with another dog but sadly they didn't get along.

Roxy did struggle living alongside another dog which had an impact on her overall behaviour and although fine with the female owner she did snap at the man when he reached out to handle her.

Roxy can be worried being handled so requires time and patience to learn to trust people. She would benefit from a calm home without children or other pets. Once she trusts someone she is very affectionate. Although she wouldn't live with other dogs she is good meeting others out on a walk.

He was found straying and although chipped was never claimed. Ralph is a nervous dog and will require an understanding/experienced owner that in the early days can give him the time and space he requires to gain trust in people as if worried he could snap but once he has built a relationship with someone he is a gentle friendly boy. Because of this he may require a few visits. He would be better suited to a quiet household without children. He travelled well on a long journey to our care but was crated. On arrival he was nervous around staff and the following day was very stressed and did have a small seizure but this may have all been stress related as he has been fine since and the previous kennels said he had been fine whilst in their care. Ralph has settle well with us and will now approach staff members and wag his tail and initiate contact. He wouldn't live with a cat.

He originally came in to our care as his owner no longer had time for him due to work commitments. He spent 4 months in another home when a male visitor who was standing up suddenly laughed Bodie mouthed his arm, the man grabbed his collar and in doing so Bodie bit his hand causing two puncture wounds.

Bodie is a shy boy and needs someone that understands him and is willing to introduce him to new experiences/environments gradually. Although he has lived with a 5yr old child in his original home we wouldn't house him with children under 12 yrs old.

He is housetrained, crate trained, is good when left alone, travels well and knows basic commands. He is fine around calm dogs but will guard toys/bones from them so may be better as an only dog. Chases cats.

Life Changing Products for Allergy Sufferers!

Twenty five years on, we reflect on two of our most memorable cases.

Wales 1999

I was working at Boots when I received a call from my mother. Eirlys, her next door neighbour was distraught. She had recently lost her husband and the 2 most precious things in her life were her grandchildren and her cats.

The children had come to stay over the weekend and overnight succumbed to severe asthma attacks and had to be taken to the local hospital.

After examination, the Specialist declared that they were allergic to her cats so she had a choice --- her cats or her grandchildren.

I listened carefully and decided to do some research. I soon discovered that the allergens were present in the saliva and were licked on to the cats’ coat when they cleaned themselves and then went into the air. These tiny Feld1 particles had a positive charge so could

be encapsulated by negatively charged solutions. After a week or so, I had produced in the kitchen a solution that I believed could remove the allergens at source.

For 3 weeks, Eirlys cleaned her cats with the solution once per week and then we persuaded her daughter to let the grandchildren visit. Initially, it was only for short spells but in the absence of any more asthma attacks, her daughter decided to let them stay overnight. There were no more incidents and Eirlys casually remarked that they could not be the only

ones so perhaps I should look at manufacturing the lotion that we eventually called PetalCleanse.

After 6 months I managed to find investment from Finance Wales and 2 private investors and Bio-Life was born. An efficacy trial involving 142 pets --cats, dogs, rabbits, hamsters and guinea pigs --- and 106 pet allergic patients revealed the product to be over 97% effective and safe for the pet. Eirlys, her granchildren and her cats remained loyal customers and lived happy and fulfilling lives together.

help prevent allergic reactions to dust mite, pollen and mould. In fact, allergic reactions to dust mite were even more prevalent than pet allergies. The new products contained the same actives for encapsulation but also included essential oils proven by Tovey and McDonald in Australia to be effective against dust mite allergens.

That summer, we were in Murcia and having breakfast at the Centrico when Pablo arrived for his usual morning brandy. Now, at first sight, you would think that Pablo did not have 2 Euros to rub together. You could not be more wrong! He was in fact one of the wealthiest landowners in Southern Spain growing hectares of peppers, artichokes and citrus fruit that were exported to major supermarkets across Europe. This day, this ordinarily happy, chappy was miserable. With the help of an interpreter we discovered that he suffered from frequent bouts of severe eczema which he kept covered up even in mid-summer in Murcia.

We went to visit his wife and again with the help of an interpreter, we explained the process. Wash all bedclothes and Pablo’s clothes in FabriCleanse

regularly. Spray all soft furnishings with HomeCleanse at least once per month and use AirCleanse throughout the house once per week.

Two weeks later we arrived in the Centrico to find absolute pandemonium. Pablo was so thrilled with his now clear skin, he was running around lifting his t-shirt and dropping his trousers to anyone and everyone to show them his beautiful skin!! Fortunately he did not get arrested but not only did he live eczema free for the rest of his days, he

demonstrated a very effective marketing campaign.

We have not been able to repeat this form of marketing but we are delighted to tell you that Pablo proved to be one of the first of many to change his life for good.

Finalists announced in Cats Protection’s National Cat Awards 2024

A

line-up of fabulous felines has been announced as finalists in this year’s National Cat Awards, the UK’s annual celebration of cats.

From sociable cats that spread chee r wherever they go, to caring cats who provide comfort in times of need, 11 marvellous moggies are in the running to be named Cats Protection’s National Cat of the Year 2024.

This year’s top cat will follow in the paw prints of previous winner Zebby who was named National Cat of the Year 2023 to honour the support he gives his deaf owner Genevieve Moss, alerting her to sounds around their home in Chesterfield, Derbyshire.

The finalists in this year’s Awards –which will be hosted by best-selling author and TV presenter Dawn O’Porterinclude:

• Marley – the fluffy heart of the home at a safehouse for women fleeing modern slavery.

• Cilla – a stray who moved into a primary school, calming pupils before their SATs and raising £5,000 to restock the library.

• Marmaduke – a big ginger softie who helped his owner recover from the trauma of working as an emergency ambulance technician at the Manchester Arena on the night of the 2017 attack.

Cats Protection’s National Cat Awards, organised by the UK’s largest feline welfare charity, recognises the incredible bond between cats and people, proving that life is better with cats. The four categories in the 2024 Awards are Connected Cats, Family Cats, Senior Cats and Incredible Cats. Voting opens at 9am on 17 July and cat lovers have until 30 August to vote for their favourite finalist by visiting www.cats.org.uk/nca Category winners and the overall National Cat of the Year – chosen by a panel of distinguished judges – will be announced during a ceremony at London’s One Marylebone on 18 September.

Best-selling author, TV presenter and cat lover Dawn O’Porter – who will be

hosting the awards – said: “I’m so pleased to be back to present the National Cat Awards again this year, I love hearing the amazing stories about the nominated cats and learning how these incredible animals have made lives better for their families. It really is the ultimate event for cat people.”

Cats Protection’s Marketing and Income Generation Director Catherine Cottrell said: “The National Cat Awards is an annual celebration of the nation’s love of cats and this year we received over 1,500 entries. Some of our finalists have shown incredible intuition in understanding their owners’ needs; others are total extroverts, becoming

local celebrities. Then there are the plucky pusses like William, undaunted by losing a leg, and Miss Dave Mittens who is (nearly) as sprightly as a kitten at the grand old age of 21. The central message of all the stories is that cats are cherished family members who add so much love to their owners’ lives. I can’t wait to see who the public chooses as their winners.”

Category winners will each win a prize package of a trophy, a £200 pet store voucher and a year’s subscription to Cats Protection’s The Cat magazine, with the National Cat of the Year also receiving an overall winner trophy.

Cat-acombs ordeal! Feline trapped under St. Paul’s Cathedral rescued by RSPCA

Burmese cat saved after falling down chute at landmark

Acat who disappeared into an underground basement at St.Paul’s Cathedral has been rescued by the RSPCA.

The feline tumbled 15 feet down a shaft near to the outer walls of the Grade I listed central London landmark and ended up trapped in the dark basement below the cathedral.

Fortunately, a schoolgirl who realised the cat’s predicament after watching her dash through a narrow opening at ground level at St. Paul’s Churchyard contacted the RSPCA.

When the charity’s Animal Rescue Officer (ARO) Sidonie Smith went to the churchyard on the evening of Tuesday, July 2 the cathedral had closed for the day. But with the permission of on-site security, and accompanied by a security officer, the RSPCA rescuer climbed down beneath the threecenturies old Anglican cathedral to search for the cat equipped with a strong torch and a carrier.

“We were called by a young teenager who was playing in the churchyard after school and she’d seen the cat run off and vanish underneath a slab of concrete. She was very upset, but she was able to give me a W3W geotrack location of the point where the cat had disappeared and I went to it. When I spoke to security about gaining access it turned out it was an opening down to an old storage basement that apparently no-one has used a key to get down to for 25 years,” explained the animal rescue officer.

“There were some steep, narrow stairs down and it was pitch black where you entered a large chamber, which had lots of corridors attached to it at higher levels.

Fortunately, the cat had fallen onto a bed of leaves and she was largely unscathed. She’d shot through the gap above and dropped down into the basement. She was very nervous and frightened, no doubt through the shock

of falling from height, and I had to grasp hold of her.

“I leaned on the chute to reach up to the spot where she landed. She was covered in fleas and she had a slight graze on her chin, but, happily, nothing was broken and she was able to move around.”

The rescued cat turned out to be a grey-coloured Burmese female who was microchipped. After contacting the registered owner, who claimed he’d sold the cat four years ago, the RSPCA officer placed a number of ‘found’ posters around the churchyard and grounds of St.Paul’s.

Sidonie took the cat, who was also

suffering from hair loss, to RSPCA Finsbury Park Animal Hospital for treatment and staff at the hospital have named her ‘Paula’ because of the location she was found at.

In all, ‘Paula’ spent more than four hours trapped under the cathedral.

After her stay at Finsbury Park she is ready to be moved to RSPCA Leybourne Animal Centre near West Malling in Kent, where staff will seek to find someone who can provide her a loving home and, hopefully, a danger-free life.

The animal rescue officer is also contacting the Diocese of London, who manage St.Paul’s, to highlight the perils posed to smaller animals by the ground-level access to the shaft on St.Paul’s Churchyard.

The RSPCA receives more reports of cruelty in summer than at any other time of year. That’s why we’ve launched the RSPCA Summer Cruelty Appeal http://www.rspca.org.uk/appeal, because it’s vital that we all take action together to help animals. If you believe that no animal deserves cruelty, please donate now http://www.rspca.org.uk/appeal to help animals as abuse reaches its awful peak this summer.

Tips to help new Downing Street cat JoJo settle into his new role as First Cat

Cats Protection experts have offered advice to help Downing Street’s newest political puss settle into life in the corridors of power.

JoJo – the family pet of new Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer – will join an illustrious club of cats to have access to the heart of Government following Labour’s election victory. From long-standing No.10 chief mouser Larry to former stray Humphrey, who moved in during Margaret Thatcher’s tenure, Downing Street has a long history of feline residents.

Cats Protection’s Behaviour Manager Nicky Trevorrow said: “Cats make brilliant pets for people with busy lives, so we have no doubt that rescue cat JoJo will be an excellent addition to No.10. Like all cats, he won’t take on anything he doesn’t want to – but if he can raise a smile on stressful days, he’ll be doing a good job.”

With the prospect of JoJo needing to face his first political hurdle – getting to know Downing Street legend Larry – the charity has issued its top tips on helping cats settle into new homes and routines:

Don’t rush: Introducing new pets to each other takes time. If you want a harmonious cat coalition, take it slowly by not forcing them to spend time together.

Swap smells: Cats have an incredible sense of smell and would rather get to know each other through scent before they meet face to face. Do this by using

a small flannel or blanket to wipe over each cat, and then place near the other cat.

Keep them busy: When their owner takes on a busy job, cats may need a bit more entertainment to keep them amused. Feeding toys are a great way to keep their minds sharp and their bodies fit and healthy.

Check out The Cat Manifesto: If JoJo could talk, his first task may be to advise the Prime Minister to check out The Cat Manifesto to see what matters most to our feline friends. Read it at cats.org.uk/manifesto

Walk-in Chalet

The standard unit you will need for your licenced cattery, also used and approved by leading rescue groups throughout the UK.

The fully lined and insulated walk-in sleeping quarter measures 4ft wide x 4ft deep x 6ft high and has a vinyl floor for easy cleaning.

Two removable UPVC shelves, a fully adjustable air vent, lockable cat flap and a fully opening window leading to a sunning shelf and ladder, make this a firm favourite with customers and cats alike!

A 6ft long exercise area gives your cats plenty of space to explore and relax. A second sunning shelf provides another area to watch the world go by as it is near the front of the pen.

Catios

Handmade, bespoke cat runs are a lovely addition to a property, allowing a safe and secure outside space, for your indoor cats. They can be designed with lift out shutters, to have at the time of installation or added at a later date, which provide weather protection from the elements, making it an area that can be used year-round.

We are able to supply extras, to provide activity and viewing point for your cats, such as ladders, posts and sunning shelves. The addition of a Deluxe Cat Cabin can also provide a small hideaway, for cosying up and having a cat-nap.

#CelebrateCats this International Cat Day

Global cat welfare charity International Cat Care (iCatCare) invites cat professionals and enthusiasts from around the world to join them in celebrating our feline friends this International Cat Day.

As co-ordinators of this special day, which takes place annually on 8 August, iCatCare encourages anyone with an appreciation for cats, including cat owners, veterinary professionals and people who work with cats, to take a moment to celebrate the species and the unique bonds we share with them.

With an estimated 600 million cats worldwide, both owned and unowned, the theme ‘Celebrating Cats’ invites cat advocates to come together and share their love for cats - fostering a sense of community and shared passion for championing their welfare.

Leading up to International Cat Day, the charity will be sharing ideas for ways organisations and individuals can get involved in the campaign, across their website (https://icatcare.org/international-cat-day/) and social media channels (@icatcare), including:

l Sharing photos or videos of how you’re celebrating cats for International Cat Day, using the #InternationalCatDay #CelebrateCats and tagging @icatcare

l Highlighting how you celebrate cats

within your workplace. For example, veterinary clinics that have achieved Cat Friendly Clinic status or how those working with unowned cats are able to improve the lives of cats in their care

l Wearing the colour pink or something cat-themed to work to show your colleagues and clients that you’re supporting International Cat Day and celebrating cats everywhere

l Making a donation or organising a fundraiser for your favourite cat welfare charity, such as iCatCare, and encouraging colleagues, family and friends to do the same

Nicola Martin, iCatCare CEO, said: ‘On International Cat Day we will be taking a moment to reflect on how our work ‘celebrates cats’ – from our accredited Cat Friendly Clinics which put cats’ unique needs first when they visit the vet, to our Cat Friendly Homing programme (supported by Battersea) which revolutionises the way the homing sector works to improve the welfare of unowned cats.

I will be encouraging my colleagues to join in with the fun activities we have planned, as well as thanking all the wonderful people who dedicate their time to improving the lives of cats around the world. We’d also like to celebrate our supporters, partners and sponsors who provide us with the funds we need to share our knowledge and expertise to create a cat friendly world.’

n To join the campaign, follow @icatcare on social media, tag us in your posts and use #CelebrateCats and #InternationalCatDay. A 'Supporting International Cat Day' logo can also be downloaded here For more information and campaign ideas, visit: https://icatcare.org/international-cat-day/

NEW! Allax crash-tested dog cages

These dog cages are well-ventilated, with lots of space between the horizontal, length-adjustable aluminium bars. The perspex window at the top of the door prevents the dog from harming itself by pushing its snout into this space.

Thule's Allax range is a really smart and undoubtedly premium-quality take on the long-established concept of the variable length dog cage. Allax comes with the reassurance of crash-tested safety, to TÜV SÜD standards, and if correctly positioned these cages will contain even the heaviest dogs in a vehicle crash, giving fully-reliable protection to the human passengers.

With a 'crumple zone' - more of a telescoping section - a burst-proof door and a rear escape hatch, and with a smart juxtaposition of black steel and silver aluminium parts, and with the variable length allowing more flexibility in the range of vehicles that a particular cage will fit, we think Allax is not only the best of its type (metal cages with a steel back) but also good value for money.

This is the size XS, 50cm wide by 50cm high, adjustable in length from 66cm to 72cm, weight 15.5kg. Our database will tell you if this cage will fit your vehicle. £424.95 RRP: £489.99

It's designed for safety, and has passed TÜV's crash- testing regime. It's also designed for ease of use, with a door on each side (one-handed opening and closing), and a very cosy bed that's easily removed for hand washing. £269.95

The rise of the ‘Hut dog!’ A third more owners are taking their dogs on a beach hut holiday this summer

During Covid, a staggering 3.2 million UK households got a dog. It’s no wonder pet staycations have increased by 40% since 2019. A holiday expert says dog-friendly beach huts are now one of the most relaxed places to take your best four-legged friend.

Following the explosion of ‘pandemic puppies’ during Covid, there are now around 12 million dogs in the UK. 75% of their owners say they plan to take their best four-legged friend on a staycation this summer.

A leading holiday expert says post-Brexit bureaucracy has made it more expensive to take dogs abroad and pet-friendly staycations have increased by 40% since 2019. One of biggest booms is in hound-friendly huts. The increasing number of dog-friendly beach huts means that many of our canine companions have become enthusiastic 'hut dogs'.

Lily Smith, a travel and holiday expert from the specialist booking service BeachHuts.com, says: ‘Since January 2021, British pet passports are no longer valid for a trip to Europe. Dogs now need a certificate showing they have been microchipped and vaccinated against rabies, which can cost up to £300. It’s no wonder we’ve seen a 29% boom in holidaymakers taking their dogs to beach huts since 2019.

‘Of the 12 million dogs now in the UK, the RSPCA says that 3.2 million were acquired as “pandemic puppies”. Dog owners who baulked at returning to the office certainly would struggle to be parted from their pet during the holidays, so an inexpensive UK staycation is the ideal solution. Fortunately, it no longer requires a bloodhound to sniff out the best beach huts. Many now welcome dogs, while a surprising number of UK beaches are dog-friendly all year round.

‘For example, Devon has 77 dog-friendly beaches where they are welcome 12 months a year, Cornwall has 59 and Pembrokeshire a huge 80. Using

the handy filter on the beachhuts.com website, it's easy to locate a large selection of dog-friendly huts at many of the UK's most beautiful and poochwelcoming beaches.

‘Post-pandemic, many more owners

now ensure their huts are mutt-friendly and offer specific facilities such as dog bowls when people rent them. Look out for welcoming messages such as: “Walton beach is dog friendly all year round, so please feel free to bring your

Caption: A contented ‘hut dog’ settling into a beach hut at Gorleston Beach, Norfolk.

furry friends along to share in your happy day!”

‘Whether it’s your pet’s first time or they are an experienced old sea dog, beach huts make a fabulous base for long walks, splashing after plastic ducks and then crashing out in the shade.

‘Of course, there are a number of beaches that still operate a ban or limits on dogs between April/May and September. For some beaches, that’s an outright ban but some counties, particularly Cornwall, now allow dogs on most restricted beaches from 6pm to 10am.

‘Even if there is a summer-season dog ban in the immediate area of your ideal vacation, there may well be options. One award-winning hut, which lists “dog bowls and treats” among its facilities, says: “Dogs are most welcome in the hut and on the promenade, however not on the section of the beach immediately in front of the hut from April to October. However, dogs are allowed all year round on the beach north and south of where the huts end. There is a lovely dog walk behind the huts and car park over the marshes.”

‘Of course, part of the charm of a

beach hut is it’s still possible to have a cosy time outside of the peak summer season, when there are no dog bans in force for the vast majority of UK beaches. There’s no need for a long ‘paws’ between vacations as many huts remain available all year round.

‘Relaxing by the sea, sipping tea or

something stronger and colder, walking the dog and occasionally sheltering in cosy comfort from the traditional British rain is actually the real holiday most families crave.

‘From the sands of Sandbanks in Dorset and Sandown on the Isle of Wight, to being right next to the sea in Wells-next-the-Sea in Norfolk, BeachHuts.com has been the UK’s No1 beach hut booking website since 2005. It’s true to say, however, that there’s been an unprecedented surge in demand over the last few years, particularly for those huts welcoming man’s – and woman’s and kid’s –best friend.

‘Many people now find themselves returning to the same hut several summers in a row to recharge their batteries or enjoy more active seaside experiences. Huts are available from as little as £20 a day.

Dogs Trust partners with Hush Puppies to support canine welfare

Dogs Trust, the UK’s

With the iconic Basset Hound at the heart of Hush Puppies, the new partnership will support the charity to continue its vital work, with the brand donating 10p per pair of school shoes sold at HushPuppies.co.uk or in store as part of their back-to-school campaign.

Dogs Trust have been working to create a better future for dogs and their owners since 1891. In 2023, Dogs Trust cared for 13,374 dogs and found loving homes for 10,588 of them. Two Basset Hound cross pups who are currently seeking their forever home are dynamic mother and son duo Dasher and Posie. The bonded pair arrived at Dogs Trust West Calder in 2023, having not had the best start in life. Since living at the Rehoming Centre, the pair have stolen the hearts of the team. Dasher and Posie are looking for a family who can work on their training with them while giving them all the attention and cuddles. Their ideal owners would be at home often and be comfortable walking in quiet areas to giving them both time and patience to adapt to home life.

Owen Sharp, Chief Executive Officer at Dogs Trust said: “From rehabilitation to rehoming, we’re here to make life better for dogs in need. We believe that every dog that comes through our doors deserves to find a loving new home. Partnering with Hush Puppies

on their back-to-school campaign this year will make a great difference to the level of support we’re able to give our dogs and their owners. Every penny donated will help us ensure we can continue to give dogs in our care everything they need until they find their forever homes.”

Dogs Trust and Cats Protection issue urgent appeal for fosterers across Berkshire to support pet owners fleeing domestic abuse

Appeal comes as Freedom and Lifeline projects mark 20th anniversary

Two specialist fostering services that support pet owners fleeing domestic abuse have issued an urgent appeal for more volunteers to come forward across Berkshire and open their homes to pets in need after experiencing an increase in demand for their services.

This appeal comes as Freedom, managed by Dogs Trust, and Lifeline, managed by Cats Protection, mark 20 years of supporting pets and their owners fleeing domestic abuse. Since the services launched two decades ago, over 4,500 dogs and cats have been supported, enabling thousands of survivors to get to safety knowing their beloved pet would be safe too.

Both organisations launched in partnership in 2004 due to emerging research at the time highlighting the link between domestic abuse and animal abuse, combined with the majority of refuges being unable to accept pets.

Since then, the two leading dog and cat charities have expanded their services significantly and continue to work closely together to provide temporary foster homes, enabling their owners to access safe accommodation without the fear of what may happen to their pet if left behind.

However, over the last 12 months, both charities have seen an increase in demand and has issued an urgent call for more volunteers to come forward to

provide temporary foster homes for cats and dogs until they are able to be safely reunited with their owners.

This vital service can only be offered through the incredible support of the Lifeline and Freedom volunteers who open their homes and hearts to pets who are at risk. All volunteers are fully supported by the experienced Lifeline and Freedom teams who will provide everything the pet will need throughout their stay, including organising photos and updates for the pet’s owner on how their pet is doing, ensuring that they still feel connected despite their short time apart.

Confidentiality is key for these services and no foster carer details are shared

with the pet’s owner, and vice-versa. Dogs Trust Freedom and Cats Protection Lifeline cover all the costs involved in caring for the animals, so volunteer foster carers get to experience all of the benefits of having a pet in their home with none of the financial implications.

The support of Freedom and Lifeline is vital as many refuges and emergency accommodation providers are unable to accept pets. In fact, the results of a survey conducted by Cats Protection* revealed 90% of domestic abuse professionals surveyed also said that, in their experience, having a pet had been a barrier to someone experiencing domestic abuse getting to safety.

Further to this, research by Dogs Trust** found that pets are often abused and, in some cases, killed by the perpetrator of domestic abuse in order to control and coerce. In addition to the physical abuse that pets may suffer, 97%* of professionals working in the domestic abuse sector also said that animals are often used as a means of controlling someone experiencing domestic abuse.

Annika is one of the people supported by Dogs Trust’s Freedom scheme:

“Both me and Jake were suffering domestic abuse on a daily basis. The level of violence was extreme; it was physical to the point that I was punched and kicked but also, he was controlling and would emotionally abuse me.

“I’d had Jake from just a few months old and he was like my baby, he’d follow

me everywhere. After a while my perpetrator realised that if he couldn’t get to me, he would harm Jake. Jake was also punched, had wood broken over his head, he’d get picked up and thrown against cupboards.

“There were times when I tried to leave but this would be when the levels of physical violence would escalate and end really badly for me. I knew that if I left without Jake, it would end very badly for him too. He made threats to say that if I ever left that he would kill Jake or let him roam out on the streets.

“I contacted a domestic violence helpline and I was given a safeguarding social worker, so both my care coordinator and social worker wanted me to leave straight away, but I couldn’t without Jake. I wasn’t going to leave without him. This was when the social worker told me about Freedom.

“I want to say a massive thank you to the volunteers who make this service possible. It’s fantastic what they do, it enabled me and Jake to leave a really awful situation and if they weren’t there, I don’t know what I would have done.”

Laura Saunders, Freedom Manager at Dogs Trust, said:

“We’ve seen first-hand the ways that perpetrators use dogs to coerce, control, physically harm and threaten as a tool to maintain power and control over their victim. This is incredibly frightening for survivors and is often aimed to leave people isolated.

“By offering this service, we are able to

A Pig Rescue

Earlier in the year, we were called out to rescue a ‘large’ pig that was straying in the wilds of the Norfolk countryside.

We eventually tracked her down and brought her back to the Sanctuary.

Within a couple of days she had given birth to nine healthy piglets! We are so pleased that we were able to find her just in time.

support survivors to access safe accommodation with the reassurance that their dog will be taken care of until they can be reunited.

“However, we are busier than ever and now need more volunteers to open up their hearts and homes and provide temporary foster care so that more people can flee domestic abuse, knowing their much- loved pets will be looked after until they are safely settled.”

Amy Hyde, Lifeline Service Manager at Cats Protection, said:

“Over the past 20 years, we have been proud to support so many survivors and their beloved pets, who mean absolutely everything to them. Sadly though, demand for our services is only increasing and now more than ever we need more volunteers to step forward and join our fostering teams.

"Fostering comes with so many benefits. There’s absolutely no cost and it’s perfect for anyone who would like to enjoy the company of a pet without the long-term commitment. Ninety- five per cent of our foster carers tell us that fostering with Lifeline has had a positive impact on their mental health and wellbeing. While it may be emotional to say goodbye when the survivor is safe and ready to take their pet back, it’s incredibly rewarding for fosterers who know they have supported a pet and their family to get to safety, at a time when they so desperately needed support.”

Above: Poppy as we have called her, is now out, minus nose ring, free-ranging with her offspring at Priory Farm, St Olaves, where you are very welcome to come and meet the family.

Do Birds Have A Specific Feeding Time Throughout The Year?

Despite a common misconception that birds don’t require feeding during summer when natural food sources are in abundance, birds actually need feeding all year round. Sure, in winter they are faced with a diminished amount of natural food sources and climates are colder so they need to find shelter and warmth for survival.

Food shortages can in fact occur at any time throughout the year and so it is essential that we keep up with bird feeding habits throughout the warmer months too.

During spring and summer, birds require high energy, high protein foods to successful moult, mate and nest their young.

Equally, in the winter, birds require high-fat content snacks to ensure their energy is sustained to keep them warm and aid survival in the colder months.

Do Birds Have A Specific Feeding Time Throughout The Day?

The correct time of day to feed birds is a hot topic of conversation among avid bird watchers. Although there isn’t a direct answer to this question other than ‘it depends’, birds are usually most active early in the morning.

The time of year, weather and type of bird can all be depending factors on the time of day you can expect your garden to be at its busiest.

Before dawn is when you can expect the most activity from the most varied selection of bird breeds. However, birds will eat throughout the entire day and so it is necessary that food sources are replenished regularly.

Birds will mostly stop feeding when it's dark, however, it is possible that bird seed may attract other animals throughout the night. It’s important that bird feed is placed out of reach from other animals. You can read more about bird food and other animals here https://kennedywildbirdfood.co.uk/blo g/bird-food-and-other-animals/

When Is The Best Time To See Birds Feeding

Between the hours of 7 am and 11 am are usually the best times to watch birds. Depending on the season, you can expect to see birds earlier in spring and summer when mornings are lighter, and later in the winter months.

As always, if you do spot an extra special bird visit your garden throughout the days to come, make sure to document it in the Birdspotter App https://birdspotter.kennedywildbirdfood.co.uk

The right time to see birds also depends on many factors, including your location. Built up, urban areas will likely see more birds during less busy times of the day. Whereas if you live in a rural area, you may find an influx of birds throughout the day.

Dogs Trust announces its new dog-u-mentary, to air this year

Pete Wicks: For Dogs’ Sake

The UK’s largest canine charity, Dogs Trust, announced that it will feature in a new documentary, Pete Wicks: For Dogs’ Sake, to air later this year on free-to-air entertainment channel U&W, on UKTV

Produced by BBC Studios Entertainment, the docu-series will follow TV star, podcaster, and animal welfare advocate Pete Wicks as he works with Dogs Trust to rescue, rehabilitate and rehome vulnerable dogs.

Pete has worked tirelessly ‘behind the scenes’ at a number of Dogs Trust’s rehoming centres over the UK during 2024, primarily based at the Basildon branch in his home county of Essex.

Viewers will get a glimpse of the heartwarming – and occasionally, heartbreaking – stories of dogs and their owners as Pete follows Dogs Trust through the rehabilitation and rehoming journey, from the moment the dogs are rescued right up to the point they go to their forever homes.

Pete Wicks said:

“Anyone who knows me knows that I prefer animals to people, so this show is a real passion project for me! With two rescue dogs of my own, animal welfare is close to my heart, and I am super excited to be teaming up with U&W for this amazing opportunity.”

Owen Sharp, Chief Executive at Dogs Trust, said:

“We’ve been absolutely delighted to welcome Pete Wicks into our rescue

centres to see, at close hand, how we provide a safe space for dogs in need, and work with them until they’re ready to go into new homes. We can’t wait until the show comes out later this year and,

The nation has a new top dog! Incredible canine hero reaches lifesaving milestone

Meet Sharwood, the incredible blood donor dog who has become the first in the UK to reach 40 donations.

Sharwood’s 40th milestone also saw him retire as a donor as he will soon turn 8, the maximum age limit for dog blood donors, seeing him leave behind a legacy that has helped to save the lives of up to 160 other dogs.

Gordon Setter Sharwood, of Eaton Bray, Bedfordshire, has been loyally attending blood donation sessions since 2017, with the help of his dedicated owner Sue Mitchell.

Sharwood made his 40th and final blood donation at the session run by the charity Pet Blood Bank at Northampton Vets4Pets on Saturday 13 July, securing his crown as the first dog to ever reach this milestone. His 40th donation brings the total weight of blood he has donated to an astounding 22.5kg!

Sharwood comes from a long line of canine blood donors with fellow family members Garner, Baxter, and Brinjal having also contributed many donations over the years. Collectively, Sue’s dogs have donated over 97 units of blood since the family’s first donor Garner joined the pack in 2015, enough to have helped save the lives of up to 388 other dogs. These units of blood are collected by Pet Blood Bank at donation days run across the UK. They are then processed and stored, ready to be sent out to vets when they need it for a critically ill dog.

Dachshund Sizzle is one dog who received a unit of Sharwood’s blood. Sizzle suffers from haemophilia so has been reliant on lifesaving blood products for his whole life.

‘No words can express the relief an owner feels being told there are vital blood products available’, Sizzle’s owner Emma Gray explained. ‘It truly humbles me that owners and their wonderful dogs give up their time to attend donation sessions. Without Sharwood and his lovely owner Sue, our dog Sizzle would simply not be here today. A massive heartfelt thank you to Sharwood and Sue and congratulations on this incredible achievement.’

There are many other owners like

Emma across the country whose beloved pets are here today thanks to the commitment and passion of Sue and her lifesaving dogs, plus the thousands of other owners and dogs who support the charity.

Sue commented, ‘As the owner of Sharwood, I am immensely proud of him reaching this incredible achievement with Pet Blood Bank. His first donation was in 2017 and he has successfully donated on every visit since then! He will now hand over the reins to his son, Brinjal, who has already donated 12 units. Sharwood is the third of my dogs who has regularly donated to this wonderful charity. I am so proud of them for all the lives they have helped to save.’

‘Canine blood donors and their owners are the hidden helpers of the veterinary world,’ said Pet Blood Bank spokesperson Nicole Osborne. ‘Their donations help to ensure that lifesaving blood is always available for any vet that needs it, and Sharwood has gone above

and beyond in his contributions to this cause. We are unbelievably proud of him and Sue for reaching 40 donations. The blood Sharwood has given over the years is enough to have helped up to 160 other dogs, which is an outstanding achievement for a single dog. His siblings are sure to be chuffed for him!’

With Sharwood off to enjoy his well-earned retirement, Pet Blood Bank needs more dogs to come forward as lifesaving donors. To be a donor, dogs need to be between 1 and 8 years old, weigh more than 25kg, and be fit, healthy, and confident.

Dogs receive a health check from a vet before lying on their side while donating approximately 450ml of blood. They are showered in treats, fuss and attention from the Pet Blood Bank team and get a goody bag and toy to take home.

Horse who helped children in Brixton given retirement home at Redwings

A friendly cob who helped children and young people at a Brixton horse club has been given a specialist retirement home at Redwings, where he can receive ongoing care.

Ebony Horse Club, a charity who work with youngsters in London, contacted Redwings about Harley, a 15.3 piebald cob, after all their efforts to find an appropriate final home for him failed.

Thirteen-year-old Harley has osteoarthritis in his hind fetlocks, meaning he can no longer work, and needs closely monitored care.

Redwings is the largest horse welfare charity in the UK and is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year.

Sidony Holdsworth, COO of Ebony Riding Club, said: “We are very grateful that Redwings agreed to take Harley, who is a favourite amongst us all here at Ebony Horse Club.

“He’s been with us for four years,

during which time he’s helped hundreds of children and young people in Brixton who need our services the most, largely from low-income backgrounds who otherwise may never have had an opportunity like this.

“He’s a sweetheart of a horse, who has done so much for so many, and we know that however much time he has, he’ll have the very best of everything at Redwings.”

Harley arrived at Redwings in April and has now been moved to Aylsham Visitor Centre in Norfolk.

Welfare Vet Chloe Jefferd is overseeing Harley’s care. She said: “Harley spent some time with us at our reception centre before being moved to Aylsham where he is enjoying being turned out on

grass with new friends.

“The care staff say he’s formed a nice bond with Maya, and is such a lovely, relaxed horse who loves a scritch from staff and visitors to the site.

“Harley is on anti-inflammatories for his arthritis and hind limb issues. His condition is being closely monitored and we’ll keep him comfortable and happy for as long as we can here at Redwings.”

n Redwings is entirely funded by donations which allow the charity to offer homes to horses like Harley. If you would like to donate towards Harley’s care, and that of the hundreds of others in Redwings sanctuaries, please visit www.redwings.org.uk/support-us/donate

Why cats meow at humans more than each other

This is a story that goes back thousands

of years.

Originally, cats were solitary creatures. This means they preferred to live and hunt alone, rather than in groups. Most of their social behaviour was restricted to mother-kitten interactions. Outside of this relationship, cats rarely meow at each other.

However, as cats began to live alongside humans, these vocalisations took on new meanings. In many ways, when a cat meows at us, it’s as if they see us as their caregivers, much like their feline mothers.

Cats probably first encountered humans roughly 10,000 years ago, when people began establishing permanent settlements. These settlements attracted rodents, which in turn drew cats looking for prey. The less fearful and more adaptable cats thrived, benefiting from a consistent food supply. Over time, these cats developed closer bonds with humans.

Unlike dogs, which were bred by humans for specific traits, cats essentially domesticated themselves. Those that could tolerate and communicate with humans had a survival advantage, leading to a population well-suited to living alongside people.

To understand this process, we can look at Russian farmed fox experiments. Beginning in the 1950s, Soviet scientist Dmitry Belyaev and his team selectively bred silver foxes, mating those that were less fearful and aggressive toward humans.

Over generations, these foxes became more docile and friendly, developing physical traits similar to domesticated

dogs, such as floppy ears and curly tails. Their vocalisations changed too, shifting from aggressive “coughs” and “snorts” to more friendly “cackles” and “pants”, reminiscent of human laughter.

These experiments demonstrated that selective breeding for tameness could lead to a range of behavioural and physical changes in animals, achieving in a few decades what would usually take thousands of years. Though less obvious than the differences between dogs and the ancestral wolf, cats have also changed since their days as African wildcats. They now have smaller brains and more varied coat colours, traits common among many domestic species.

Cats’ vocal adaptations

Like the silver foxes, cats have adapted their vocalisations, albeit over a much longer period of time. Human babies are altricial at birth, meaning they are entirely dependent on their parents. This dependency has made us particularly attuned to distress calls – ignoring them would be costly for human survival.

Cats have altered their vocalisations to tap into this sensitivity. A 2009 study by animal behaviour researcher Karen McComb and her team gives evidence of this adaptation. Participants in the study listened to two types of purrs. One type was recorded when cats were seeking food (solicitation purr) and another recorded when they were not (nonsolicitation purr). Both cat owners and non-cat owners rated the solicitation purrs as more urgent and less pleasant.

An acoustic analysis revealed a highpitch component in these solicitation purrs, resembling a cry. This hidden cry taps into our innate sensitivity to distress sounds, making it nearly impossible for us to ignore.

But it’s not just cats that have adapted their vocalisations: we have too. When we talk to babies, we use “motherese”, more commonly known as “baby talk”, characterised by a higher pitch, exaggerated tones and simplified language. This form of speech helps engage infants, playing a role in their language development.

We’ve extended this style of communication to our interactions with

pets, known as pet-directed speech. Recent research suggests that cats respond to this form of communication. A 2022 study by animal behaviour researcher Charlotte de Mouzon and colleagues found that cats could distinguish between speech addressed to them and speech addressed to adult humans. This pattern of discrimination was particularly strong when the speech came from the cats’ owners.

Our adoption of pet-directed speech reinforces a bond that mirrors motherkitten interactions.

Changes in vocalisations are not only seen in cat-human relationships. Compared to the ancestral wolf, dogs have expanded their barking behaviour to communicate more effectively with humans and, just as with cats, we use pet-directed speech when interacting with dogs.

Over time, cats have evolved to use vocal signals that resonate with our nurturing instincts. Paired with our use of pet-directed speech, this two-way communication highlights the unique relationship we’ve developed with our feline friends. It seems cats might be the winners in this relationship, adapting to solicit care and attention from us. Still, a lot of cat owners wouldn’t have it any other way.

Where are all the Butterflies?

Wet weather and low temperatures causing havoc for butterflies during Big Butterfly Count

Leading wildlife charity Butterfly Conservation has revealed very low numbers of butterflies have been spotted so far in its annual Big Butterfly Count. On average participants are seeing just over half the number of butterflies they were spotting this time last year.

The unusually wet and windy spring, coupled with the colder than usual temperatures so far this summer could be contributing to the lack of butterflies. While there is a chance of a later emergence of the insects if there is a prolonged sunny spell, numbers are currently the lowest recorded in the 14-year history of Butterfly Conservation’s Big Butterfly Count.

With just one week remaining of the Big Butterfly Count, scientists are calling on the public to get outside for 15 minutes and record the number and type of butterflies they see – and to enter their results even if they see very few or no butterflies - as this will help them to understand more about how butterflies in the UK are faring.

Dr Dan Hoare, Director of Conservation at Butterfly Conservation, explains: “Butterflies need some warm and dry conditions to be able to fly around and mate. If the weather doesn’t allow for this there will be fewer opportunities to breed, and the lack of butterflies now is likely the knock-on effect of our very dreary spring and early summer.”

However, the charity is also warning that it is not only this year’s weather

that is contributing to the lack of butterflies being seen. 80% of butterflies in the UK have declined since the 1970s, with habitat loss, climate change and pesticide use the main drivers of this decline.

With populations of butterflies already depleted, they are less resilient to the impact of poor weather.

Dr Dan Hoare continues: “The lack of butterflies this year is a warning sign to us all. Nature is sounding the alarm and we must listen. Butterflies are a key indicator species. When they are in trouble we know the wider environment is in trouble too.

“People are telling us that they aren’t seeing butterflies, but simply telling us is not enough, we need everyone to record what they are or aren’t seeing by doing a Big Butterfly Count as this will give us the evidence we need to take vital action to conserve our butterfly species.”

Butterfly Conservation’s Big Butterfly Count is the largest citizen-science project of its kind and is a positive action everyone can take to help collect important scientific data which informs policy decision making and conservation effort.

The public are asked to spend just 15

minutes outside when in a sunny spot and record the number and type of butterflies they see.

Whether done with friends and family, or in a moment of quiet and calm solitude, the Big Butterfly Count is free, fun and quick to do. It is open to anyone, of any age, in any part of the UK – towns, cities or the countryside. No green space is too small – a back garden, a small terrace or balcony with some pot plants, a public park, allotment, or country lane are all important spaces to explore, track and report.

Last year more than 135,000 Big Butterfly Counts took place up and down the country, with participants spending a combined total of almost four years counting butterflies. Redwings’ welfare officers recognised for over 50 years of helping equines escape cruelty and neglect

Redwings’ senior field officers Jo Franklin and Julie Harding have been given the Team of the Year Award* by the National Equine Welfare Council, recognising over 50 years of service between them at the frontline of animal welfare.

Jo, who joined Redwings in 1990, and Julie, who joined Redwings in 2000, have rescued thousands of horses, ponies, donkeys and mules from cruelty and neglect during their many years working together at the horse welfare charity, which is the biggest in the UK.

Read an extended interview with them as part of Redwings’ People and Ponies series celebrating Redwings' 40th anniversary year here https://www.redwings.org.uk/news-andfeatures/ponies-and-people-weve-chang ed-ponys-life-thats-what-were-here

The pair, who have worked together for decades, were surprised with the award last month, after being secretly put forward by colleagues.

Redwings CEO Lynn Cutress said: “Julie and Jo work tirelessly and mostly unseen to protect the welfare of equines every day. They’re the people who go out to investigate when we receive a call or an email about a welfare concern.

“It is a demanding job that requires them to deal with some hard and horrible situations.

“We are very lucky to have them here at Redwings, and we are glad that we were able to nominate them for this award, as one small way of letting them know how important they are to us. “The horses, ponies, donkeys and mules can’t thank them themselves, so we wanted to take this opportunity to do that on their behalf.”

Reacting to the news of the award, Jo said: “It was genuinely quite shocking! We were in the NEWC annual general meeting and then our names popped up. I thought ‘that’s a surprise, but we won’t win’, and then we did! I text Julie

‘congratulations’ during the meeting, it was lovely.”

Julie said: “It wasn’t just being recognised by Redwings and other organisations, but also the feedback afterwards. It was nice to hear people saying such lovely things.”

They’ve been a crucial part of the life-stories of horses like Charlie who is now living his best life in sanctuary care at Redwings, totally transformed from the emaciated pony he was.

Jo added: “Obviously the fact we are needed is incredibly sad, but we love our

jobs. We know that once we bring in a horse it will receive everything it needs, and that’s just so humbling.

"Watching them go through the process and then living a happy life, that’s what we’re here for.”
