Dear Readers,

Welcome to our Summer Double Month issue. We have included many very interesting articles.

Here’s just a taster:-

l Thanks to their incredible sense of smell, the key to a greater understanding of the diagnosis of human disease is held is the noses of man’s best friend. Dogs are the best biosensors on the planet. They have 300 million scent receptors in their noses, compared to a human’s 5 million, and can detect odour at parts per trillion. UK based charity Medical Detection Dogs talk about their amazing work!

l Welcoming a new four-legged friend is always an exciting time, but nothing can be more rewarding than rehoming a small pet, giving them the forever home that they deserve. One factor in rehoming decisions is that some owners may be unprepared for the care that is required - gone are the days when guinea pigs were thought of as low maintenance or ‘starter’ pets.

l Welcome to Doodle Aid Charity –The leading UK based registered charity assisting and supporting the rehoming of Poodle Cross dogs (Doodles) introduce you their work and the journeys of Molly and Finley!

l In countries like the US and the UK where English is the most common language, the typical cat sound is written as "meow" and spoken as /mi-ow/, but how does this differ around the world?

Thank you for reading this issue of Rescue and Animal Care Magazine. We hope you enjoy reading it!

Hello all you lovely friends,

I hope you are having a lovely summer despite the buckets of rain we have had!

You maybe wondering why I have the worst fur cut ever! And by the way I am now booked in to have it properly done by the lovely Emma at Pup and Pals Dog Grooming in our village. It’s a long story so put your feet and paws up.

For about three weeks I had been very poorly. Mistress has taken me to the vets many times and initially it was thought I had some nasty bug.

After antibiotics which had little effect

I still had the highest temperature and could barely get up from my bed.

I was off my food which is a first for me and Mistress had to lift me into the car as my arthritic legs felt even weaker.

After blood tests showing I had high liver enzymes, the vet gave me an X-ray and found I had several growths in that area.

As I am 13yrs old now, it was decided not to put me through an investigatory operation.

I was sent home with lots of pills and since then appear to be back to my normal happy playful self. Mistress says it’s a miracle!

We are hoping that I will stay this way for a long while.

So your healing thoughts would be much appreciated.

Mistress is spoiling me rotten and I’ve never had so many kisses and cuddles.

The reason my fur cut looks so bad is that Mistress didn’t think I could stand for long enough at the groomers and so out came the razor! The result as you can see from my photo is embarrassing!

In my next column I will post a picture with my fur looking gorgeous again!

Lots of licks

Giving your guinea pig the best start in life

If you are thinking of rehoming a guinea pig, starting your journey together on the right foot includes not only making sure your new fourlegged friend has a suitable companion, but also providing them with a diet that is tailored to their specific requirements. Diets rich in natural ingredients, mirroring that of the wild are key.

The prime of life

The delicious single component nuggets in Science Selective Guinea Pig are nutritionally balanced to promote wellbeing and vitality. Added stabilised vitamin C, a feature across the whole of the guinea pig diet range, meets the unique need that guinea pigs have for this essential nutrient. High fibre supports optimum dental and digestive health, and with no added sugar for a healthy weight, you can be sure that you are doing your best to keep your pet healthy and happy.

Life stage diets

Of course, it’s not only adult pets that may need rehoming. What about unplanned or ‘accidental’ litters? If you

are a pet parent to a baby guinea pig you may be interested to know that just as puppy and kitten diets give dogs and cats the best start in life, junior diets for smaller pet pals are equally important. Science Selective Junior Guinea Pig offers a higher protein level, tailored to promote healthy development in young

guinea pigs up to the age of 20 weeks. Recipes rich in delicious natural ingredients ensure that tastebuds are tempted with no added sugar. How about dandelion and fennel for an irresistible taste experience?

Grain free goodness

Completing the line-up for our guinea pig friends, is Selective Naturals Grain Free Guinea Pig Food - the perfect choice for those seeking a grain-free option. High in fibre with Timothy hay as the number one ingredient and with no corn or wheat, this delicious recipe is blended with natural linseed to keep guinea pigs as healthy on the outside as they are on the inside.

Feeding a diet tailored to your guinea pig’s needs includes offering unlimited hay, fresh water, and a handful of leafy greens. By getting their diet right you will be helping to give your pal the best start in their new home.

Lorraine Kelly announced as New StreetVet Ambassador

The beloved TV presenter will support the charity in its mission to help keep pets healthy and together with their owners, wherever possible.

National charity, StreetVet, is delighted to announce its newest ambassador - Scottish TV presenter and author Lorraine Kelly Lorraine is the latest to join a host of incredible ambassadors - including the late Paul O’Grady -, in supporting this award-winning charity to raise awareness of its mission to provide free veterinary care to pets whose owners are experiencing homelessness across the UK.

Animal-lover and proud owner of fiveyear-old Angus (Border Terrier) and regular babysitter to Ruby (her daughter Rosie’s mini Dachshund), Lorraine has a history of championing pets, having previously raised awareness of the relevant role dogs play in beating social isolation - making the partnership with StreetVet a natural fit.

Lorraine Kelly, StreetVet Ambassador, says: “I love the special bond created

between all the dogs I have had in my life. I fully appreciate the crucial role they play every day in my wellbeing. Supporting StreetVet and its mission is a way to give back something to pets and owners in need, ensuring more people can enjoy this special bond long-term.”

The announcement of Lorraine as the charity’s new ambassador has started to be revealed through teaser videos shared on the StreetVet Facebook (@streetvet) and Instagram pages (@streetvetuk_), showing a portrait of Lorraine’s dogs being hand-drawn by illustrator, fundraiser and StreetVet supporter, Hercule Van Wolfwinkle, in his signature ‘rubbish’ style.

Since its initial launch in 2020, StreetVet has continued to develop the StreetVet Accredited Hostel Scheme to ensure that hostels are well-equipped to proactively accept and support residents with pets. With only 10% of all UK hostel

projects currently accepting pets*, StreetVet is committed to ensuring that those seeking support should not be forced to face being separated from their beloved companion in order to access a bed.

Jade Statt, Clinical Director & Brand Ambassador/Co-Founder, says: “The addition of Lorraine Kelly to the StreetVet team as an Ambassador is a very welcome one. As a fellow Glaswegian, I have always admired Lorraine and it is a real privilege to have her represent the charity as I know wholeheartedly that valuing pets as family is a concept that really resonates with her.“

1 In 20 Brits Suffer With IBSBut What About Our Pets?

Dog Expert Weighs In on How To Help Dogs With IBS

1 in 20 in the UK, which is 3.2 million people suffer from IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome) - but who knew it could also affect dogs?

Dog experts Kennel Store have provided an expert comment explaining:

• What is IBS in dogs?

• What causes IBS in dogs?

• What are the symptoms of IBS in dogs?

• How can you help your dog if they have IBS?

“IBS in dogs is somewhat rare, but not completely impossible - so if your dog is experiencing digestive issues it’s important to consider IBS as a possibility.

What is IBS in dogs?

Similar to humans, IBS is a condition that affects the digestive system in dogs , resulting in an upset stomach.

What causes IBS in dogs?

There isn’t one definitive answer to what the cause is, but is commonly set off by stimulants such as food allergies or stress. It’s also possible that IBS can be triggered by bacterial infections or irritation in the bowel from obstructions in the intestines. Seek medical attention from your vet to help narrow down the cause.

What are the symptoms of IBS in dogs?

• Diarrhoea

• Vomiting

• Sudden urge to go to the toilet

• Constipation

• Straining to go to the toilet

• Loss of appetite

• Bloating

• Abdominal discomfort

How can you help your dog if they have IBS?

It’s best to identify the source of the dog's stress and reduce or eliminate it where possible. Sources can’t always be identified or controlled, but your vet will be able to help create a plan to help

manage your dogs gastrointestinal symptoms and stress levels. Vets can prescribe medication to relieve symptoms and help your dog begin to feel better. Vets often recommend highfibre diets or fibre supplements to control IBS symptoms in dogs. It’s advised to seek medical treatment for dogs suffering with gastrointestinal issues to prevent suffering from further issues in the future.”

Dogs Trust Basildon welcomes new resident: a live TV show!

For the last three weeks, the training barn at Dogs Trust Basildon has been completely transformed into a TV studio for the show, complete with red sofa, autocue, lights and cameras, and the carpark of the Nevendon Road rehoming centre has been filled with outside broadcast trucks.

Presented live by award-winning broadcaster, writer and dog lover Clare Balding, this warm-hearted series has celebrated the love we have for our dogs, with viewers encouraged to contact the programme to report sightings of dogs who have gone missing and help us track them down in a bid to reunite them with their owners. The show has featuring missing dogs from around the country and has been on the hunt for the owners of some of

the stray dogs that have come into the care of Dogs Trust teams around the country. This includes Lilly, a Belgium Malinois who arrived at Dogs Trust Basildon seven weeks ago as an unclaimed stray. She is now looking for a new family to welcome her into their home.

Over the last three weeks, Clare has also been joined by a number of guests in the Dogs Trust “studio” including Dr James Greenwood, resident vet of BBC’s Morning Live, and BBC radio presenter, Scott Mills.

Talking about the experience, Kelly McMaster, Rehoming Centre Manager at Dogs Trust Basildon, said: “As a rehoming centre caring for thousands of dogs every year, we’re used to the unexpected here at Dogs

Trust Basildon! But playing host to a live TV show has been a completely new and unique experience for us.

“It’s been incredible to see our training barn transformed into a TV set, and to see behind the scenes of a TV show like this.

“We hope that some of the dogs featured on the programme go on to be reunited with their owners, and that the unclaimed stray dogs in our care, including the lovely Lilly, go on to find their new, forever families.”

UK Issues With Yellow Weather Warning: Dog Expert Advises How To Calm Anxious Dogs In Thunder

Reports from the Met Office are warning Brits of potential lightning and showers, and with winds reaching up to 60mph in Southern regions. Dog experts Kennel Store have advised Brits on how to best care for their dogs during these ever changing temperatures and conditions.

Google trends searches show a 5,000% increase in searches for ‘how to calm a calm in thunder’ so concerned Brits are looking for remedies to help their petrified pooches!

Below is an expert comment which details what pet owners can do to help keep their dogs calm in periods of unpredictable weather.

“In recent years, our weather has been changing quickly, and the transition from sunshine and 40°C to lightning and heavy rain can be a strange time for dogs and cause them to feel unsettled and behave differently. Dogs may be fearful and anxious during lightning due to its unpredictability, dark skies and loud claps of thunder; which all contribute to feelings of fear.

Ensure You Are Remaining Calm

If you are feeling uneasy or tense, your dog can pick up on this. Make sure you are calm and try to adopt a neutral, rational attitude. This will translate to your dog and help them feel safe and settled.

Be Careful To Not Reinforce Fearful Behaviour

Whilst it may feel natural to console your dog and fuss them when they’re fearful, you could actually be unknowingly reinforcing the behaviour. Distract them with playing indoor based games such as fetch or give them some kind of chew to help keep them occupied.

Create a Safe Place

If your dog has a crate, move it into the quietest room in your home to create a space for your dog to go if they are feeling overwhelmed or unsettled by the sound of the lightning. You can also

move your dog's bed into the quietest room and this will provide the same kind of comfort as they aren’t as directly exposed to the noise. It’s also worth providing some extra blankets and closing the curtains or blinds so your dog isn’t constantly being stimulated by the weather outside.

Play Calming Music

Combatting anxiety inducing noises from the outside world can be a good way to help calm an anxious dog. There are playlists online which feature songs and pieces of calming music for dogs, or you could turn on the radio/television or white noise. This can help cancel out the noise of the storm and create a more soothing, calm atmosphere.

Contact Your Vet

If you feel that you’re struggling to

manage your dog's anxiety, it’s worth contacting your vet and chatting to them about your concerns. There may be some herbal or medicinal remedies that they can advise you on, or they may need to run tests to rule out any health issues that could be contributing to your dogs behaviour.

The sudden shift in weather can be unsettling for us at the best of times, and our pets are no exception. But understanding what causes this behaviour and how best to manage it means we can support our dogs and soothe them where possible to keep them as comfortable as possible in fear inducing weathers”

The future of disease diagnose-is is furry

Thanks to their incredible sense of smell, the key to a greater understanding of the diagnosis of human disease is held is the noses of man’s best friend.

There are two types of hairy heroes working for MK-based charity, Medical Detection Dogs. Medical Alert

Assistance Dogs support individuals with complex health conditions such as Type 1 diabetes, POTS and non-epileptic seizures by alerting them to an impending life-threatening medical episode. They typically give them a 5-10 minute warning so they can take the necessary action and avoid injury, hospitalisation, embarrassment and drama. As well as saving their lives they restore them, by giving them back their confidence and independence.

Bio Detection Dogs are trained to accurately detect the odour of human diseases such as cancer, Malaria and Parkinson’s from samples in the charity’s training room. This pioneering work could lead to dogs playing an important role in screening for diseases and improving patient care in hospitals. Beyond this, the charity’s vision is to

help scientists and medics develop faster, cheaper and non-invasive methods of diagnosis that could impact on thousands of lives.

There are lots of ways you can support this incredible work. You can sponsor a puppy from just £5 a month, receiving regular pupdates. You can nominate MDD as your charity of the year so all fundraising efforts contribute to training more dogs. You can join a corporate partnership scheme to gain brand

awareness, positive PR, and measurable commercial and marketing benefits to your organisation. You could leave a gift in your Will. Or you can volunteer in all sorts of ways, including socialising a puppy through it’s early training if it’s a paws-on role you like the sound of.

Molly and Finley

In April 2023 we received a request to help find an emergency foster for both Molly and Finley who were only 7 months old as the owner could no longer keep them due to a change in family circumstances. We were told that if no foster could be found within a week they would have to go into kennels. The owner said they could be re-homed separately but this was something we really wanted to avoid as felt they deserved to stay together. We put a plea out and a wonderful couple came forward who passed the home check and became their foster parents within four days of applying.

The journey was not an easy one as neither dog was house trained, pulled on lead and didn’t even recognise their names when called. Unfortunately their fur was matted and both had fleas. Molly was also severely underweight

and had ear mites and neither had been neutered. With the support of DoodleAid both dogs were given all the medical treatment they needed, were professional groomed and we change their diet to a good quality kibble all of which was paid for from the generous donations we received from our supporters.

We worked closely with the foster family who not only asked for our advice when needed but also listened to us. We are so grateful to them as we worked well as one team. The foster family did everything we asked of them and whilst puppy training was very tough on the foster family they never gave up on either dog even during the toughest of times. Following advice from the vet we got Finley neutered as soon as it was safe to do so and Molly was spayed once she has met her weight milestone.

Where are we today - We are so

pleased that this is one of the many success stories we can tell since we became a charity in 2016. Molly and Finley have been adopted by their foster family and have really landed on their paws. Both are healthy, fully toilet and house trained and love walking with their owners in the local woods and enjoy a paddle in the local stream.

We always put the needs of the dog that comes into our care first, we listen to the current owners and we never judge or take over. We offer support and guidance and do everything possible to ensure each dog finds the right home. Many “former” and “current” owners are now good friends and regularly meet up socially and (of course) to walk the dog.

Helping the forgotten animals of war

Our Mission

War Paws was created to provide a voice and make the difference for the forgotten animals of war. We feel that the only way to make the difference that is needed is not to just try and remove the animals from war zones and areas of civil conflict, but instead, we aim to provide education for the local populations, provide information and encouragement on better animal welfare and animal husbandry and to promote happy and healthy ownership of animals.

Primarily we are working to alleviate pain and suffering of dogs, cats and any other animal that needs help, predominantly within Iraq but also covering Syria, Afghanistan and other war zones and areas of civil conflict. War Paws does not believe that any animal in any one country is more deserving than another so we are happy to work with any animal in need no matter where it is located.

Could you give one of these Collies a new life phase?

Handsome Tex would benefit from a quiet home

Tex is a mature chap looking for a home. He’s 6 years old and came into our care from another rescue. We are told he had a tough life? He does seem to lack in human interaction but will need time and patience to gain that confidence. We are guessing he has possibly come from a farming background as he does show some work traits particularly around other animals.

Tex would benefit from a quiet home without young children or other pets.

Skye wouldn’t live with cats!

Skye is a 4 year old neutered black and white short coated collie. She was originally purchased from a farm by an elderly couple but they relinquished her to another rescue as they could no longer care for her. She then spent several weeks in a foster home where she settled well apart from when she would sometimes "herd" the family snapping at the back of their legs (never made contact)

Skye is friendly girl but due to the above behaviour we wouldn't house her with young children. She is housetrained and crate trained, knows basic

commands, is good when left alone for a few hours, travels well and although sometimes initially a little shy around other dogs does interact well. She wouldn't live with cats. Do you have a place in your heart and a home to offer Skye?

Tex is 6 years old and would benefit from a quiet home

There is always another waiting in the Wings ...

Having been through the loss of two dogs within seven days of each other I thought I would put into words the mixed emotions that go with the responsibility of owning a dog. I know that many of us have been through this a few times and it never gets any easier. People who have the attitude ‘it is only a dog or a cat or a rabbit’ have had no affinity with the animal they have lost. Maybe they have never had their own animal to love and care for. It is heart-breaking for those of us that have to say that final goodbye. However, we must look at the other side of the coin and realise that we are very fortunate to be able to make the final decision for our pets and not to see them suffer. We are lucky in that we have a superb vet and a practice that makes that decision easier for us and the final peace is done with respect and understanding for both dog and owner.

I have been in rescue for over 30 years now and it has never become any easier with any of my own dogs and in some cases with rescue dogs. Having owned my own dogs for over 30 years if I lost one there was always a comfort in the other ones in the house. My heart always went out to the owner who lost their only dog and I could not begin to imagine how they must feel with an empty house and no one to greet them when they returned home from an outing.

Reality has now struck as losing both dogs within a week of each other was devastating. The house became an empty shell with no purpose apart from the daily routine of getting up, working, eating and sleeping. I have counselled people many times when they have lost a pet and urged them to take their time before jumping in with another dog. You never replace a dog you have lost, you might get another one. You should never draw comparisons, nor have high expectations that the new dog will be as good, well trained and used to your ways. A new dog is a new beginning. So many dogs fail when they are sought as a ‘replacement’.

Within seven days I could bear it no longer I had to have another dog. As luck would have it I had to go to the kennels to photograph the dogs awaiting new homes to go on the

website. The day dawned and I was dreading going and meeting all the dogs, I knew this was going to be very hard for me and I did not go with any intention of looking for another dog for myself in fact that was furthest from my mind. I knew all the dogs in there waiting for new homes but on paper there was nothing suitable for me anyway.

The first dog to come for his photograph to be taken was a chocolate boy aged 6 years. I was told that he would ignore me and do his own thing. I waited camera in hand and out he came, bounced up to me wagging his tail, then he went off to do his own thing.

So many people who find themselves in the situation of having lost their only dog think back to the good old times when they had their puppy and trained it from 8 weeks. They tend to forget after 12 or 14 years what that puppy was really like. The chewing, the training and a myriad of other little things that all had to be worked on to produce the well behaved paragon that they have just lost.

They tend to think you cannot teach an older dog and years of rescue have taught me differently, I have seen the oldest of dogs learn new tricks. The other train of thought is ‘I can’t have an older dog as I can’t go through losing one again’. Sad truth is you will at some stage. There are no guarantees that a young dog will live to 13 years or even beyond. In rescue we have lost dogs to cancer at the age of 2 years. I tell people it really is a lottery.

Now on the wrong side of 70 years I knew I had to be sensible and my mind kept going back to the 6 year old in the kennels that was supposed to ignore me. He was the right age and could be a work in progress for me. I knew I would have to work with him to gain his trust and he mine so the die was cast he came home with me.

Many people may have thought ‘far too early’ and lack of respect for my old dog. Not a bit of it, I still shed tears for the office dogs Solo and Libby and there will never be any dog that will replace those two. I do not draw comparisons as Bramley was a new dog and this was a new beginning for both of us. As I type this he is at my feet snoozing. Yes, he does lie in doorways and I have to step over him but there the comparison ends, everything else is different.

The moral of the story is we are all different and grieve for our departed dogs in our own way. When the time comes to get another dog be realistic in what you can cope with and also think about how long that dog may live for bearing in mind your own age. Enjoy your new dog but never forget the faithful one who was at your side for all those years.

Injured pony safe at Redwings after a suspected dog attack

called Alfie

Alfie, who is 15 years old, arrived at Redwings after his owner discovered him in his paddock with a nasty wound to his face in early June and contacted the charity for help.

Redwings Senior Field Officer and Reception Centre Manager Julie Harding, said: “Alfie is a nervous pony, and his owner realised they would need help to catch him and assess the extent of his injury.

“Members of our welfare team attended to assist, and sedated Alfie with a syringe-pole so that a thorough veterinary investigation could be carried out.

“The wound was much more extensive than first thought – with urgent treatment needed to remove infected tissue and clean it. Although no one witnessed what happened, the wound was consistent with a dog bite, and we believe that’s the most likely cause.

“We have a lot of experience with handling nervous and semi-feral ponies

offered

home at Redwings

Redwings Head of Welfare and Behaviour Nic de Brauwere, said: “Alfie still has a long way to go but he’s in the right place and it’s looking positive. When he’s ready he’ll start working with our specialist Behavioural Centre team to help him overcome the trauma from his injury and be more comfortable with human contact.

as well as an in-house veterinary team, and Alfie’s owner and vet agreed that signing him over to Redwings’ care would be best for his ongoing treatment and recovery."

She added: “Alfie’s owner did the very best thing for him, in really upsetting and unforeseen circumstances, and we’re glad that we were able to help.”

Teams from across the charity came together to get Alfie to Redwings’ quarantine centre for new arrivals, so he could be fully assessed and treated.

“We’re grateful that veterinary wound expert Georgie Hollis from Intelligent Wound Care has worked with us to treat Alfie – Georgie previously assisted us with the care of Phoenix, the foal who came to Redwings in 2021 with extensive burns from an arson attack.

“Alfie has even been wearing Phoenix’ special hood, to secure his bandages, which had previously been donated by kind Redwings supporters.”

‘Excellent service, very pleased with tunnels, exactly as described’

‘Great tunnel, great service

I ordered a tunnel from Naylor's - the website was easy to use, and they took the trouble to contact me about the colours I had chosen to make sure they would match, which was a lovely touch. It was made to order but still came really quickly. Well packaged. The tunnel itself is awesome and my dogs have been having great fun with it. Faultless.’

Light weight tunnels are suitable for home use with a small dog.

Medium weight tunnels can be used at home or for small clubs where you have a few dogs.

Leading cat welfare charity wants owners to engage in ‘Purrfect Play Every Day’ for International Cat Day

Co-ordinator of International Cat Day and pioneering cat welfare charity, International Cat Care (iCatCare), recommends that cat owners take five minutes a day to play with their cats to improve their physical health and mental wellbeing.

The campaign has been developed to encourage owners to play with each of their cats separately for at least five minutes every day with a wand toy, an activity that less than 30% of cat owners are currently engaging in (according to a recent survey conducted by the charity). Just like dogs need walking every day, cats need daily play to keep them active and happy. Wand toy play provides cats with a safe outlet to perform natural behaviours and has many benefits, including:

l Reduced hunting behaviour (by up to 25% in some studies)1

l Increased mental stimulation

l Encourages exercise and helps to maintain a healthy bodyweight

l Reduction in problem behaviours (such as destroying household items)2

l Strengthening of the human-animal bond

l Improved quality of life2

iCatCare will be sharing expert advice on the purrfect toys, how best to play with cats of all ages, plus, tips and tricks for safe play with the whole family. The two-week social media campaign, ‘Purrfect Play Every Day’, will launch on 1 August, leading up to International Cat Day (8 August) and beyond, inspiring owners to make playing with their cats a daily habit.

Sarah Ellis, Head of Cat Mental

Wellbeing and Behaviour at iCatCare said: “The benefits to our cats of playing with them are really impressive, both in terms of their physical health and their mental wellbeing. We know cat lovers want to do their best by their cats and we are therefore excited to help everyone spend 5 minutes on a daily basis playing with their cat with a wand toy. It’s definitely something cats will thank us for!”

Charting the Linguistic Landscape of Cats Across Nations

In countries like the US and the UK where English is the most common language, the typical cat sound is written as "meow" and spoken as /mi-ow/, but how does this differ around the world?

Well, the French language has the lovely “meow” pronounced as /mwa/, while German speakers have a more lively “miau”, pronounced “mia".

Looking further east, we come across amazing contrasts in sounds. The cat's "meow" is frequently written as "nyaa" and is pronounced as "a" in Japan. In Mandarin, the word “miao” is pronounced as "/mja/".

In Latin America, Spanish speakers use the familiar "miau" pronounced as /mjaw/ to represent a cat's sound.

Cat, Kot or Qita: Mapping What Cats Are Called Worldwide

Mandarin speakers use the word "mao" (/ma/) to refer to a cat, while the Japanese word for "cat" is "neko" (/neko/). The term "cat" is pronounced "gato" (/ato/) in both Spanish and Portuguese, while "gato" (/atu/) is also used by Brazilian Portuguese speakers. As we head towards East Africa where Swahili is a very common language, the term for "cat" is "paka" (/paka/).

APBC Case Study - Yogi The Cat

As a result of overgrooming Yogi had to wear a specialist surgical suit to protect his skin from irritation and infection. Yogi’s owner Paula Saint contacted Amanda Campion, a feline behaviourist and Association of Pet Behaviour Counsellors (APBC) member, for professional advice. Following a combination of behavioural and environmental modifications, Yogi has gone on to win several cat shows.

Paula first sought a referral from the vet to ascertain exclusion from any underlying health conditions, as internal and external pathologies can co-exist. With no medical reason for Yogi’s overgrooming, Paula enlisted the expertise of behaviourist Amanda Campion. It was determined Yogi was displaying signs of anxiety, which presented as overgrooming, much like when a human bites their nails.

Upon meeting Yogi and Paula, Amanda determined that Yogi’s compulsion to lick himself was due to redirected anxiety, a common form of anxiety behaviour seen among cats living in the same environment. When a

cat experiences something overstimulating and it cannot respond to those feelings - frustration, aggression or fear may be redirected towards an innate object, itself, another pet or even its owner. In Yogi’s case, it presented as obsessive-compulsive grooming of his coat.

It was decided that it was appropriate for Yogi to go on an anxiolytic support plan which included a combination of husbandry changes and non-invasive pheromone therapy alongside a regime of distraction. He was prescribed Clomipramine which was effective from just four days. Amanda also recommended the reduction of environmental stressors by placing high-reward cat nip toys and a puzzle feeder to associate a safe zone. This helped to divert negative attention from destructive behaviour into something more positive and reduce anxiety and frustration.

One month later, Yogi had significantly improved, and his destructive grooming habits had ceased allowing him to have the suit off for several hours a day. Two short weeks after this, he could remove

his protective suit entirely. Now, Yogi is an award-winning cat, having participated in 12 shows across the UK. Amanda says, “Overgrooming is a real issue, and it becomes habitual, leaving many pet owners bereft, watching their cat lick themselves sore. I would urge any owner who may think their feline is displaying signs of overgrooming, beyond typical feline grooming, to seek help from a behaviourist registered with a professional body such as the APBC. With a few behavioural and environmental changes, it can be addressed. Just look at Yogi now!”

Appeal after kitten ‘thrown from vehicle’ in Cheshire undergoes surgery

Winston is now making a good recovery and is in the care of the RSPCA

The RSPCA is appealing for information after a kitten believed to have been thrown from a moving vehicle suffered serious injury.

The six-week-old, who has been named Winston by volunteers at RSPCA Crewe and Nantwich Branch, is now making a good recovery after his ordeal.

He was spotted by delivery driver Leaum Rutter (pictured) lying on Cross Lane at Church Minshull near Crewe on Friday, June 30. Winston was crawling around in agony on the side of the road, but Leaum stopped the traffic and came to his rescue. The driver placed the young cat in a box and took him to a Nantwich-based vet’s where x-rays revealed the feline had suffered a bilateral femoral fracture.

Winston underwent successful surgery to pin his broken leg and is now under the care of the Crewe and Nantwich Branch, who have moved him into a foster home.

The branch’s cat coordinator, Mandy Hill, said: “The vet thought the impact injuries were unusual and after examination it sadly does look like this little kitten was thrown from a moving car.

“It’s such a callous thing to do to a little cat. Winston was really scared when he first came into the branch. At first we thought he may be a feral cat, but it is clear he has been socialised by someone and has been living in someone’s home.

“He’s a lively little thing and fortunately the vet expects him to make a good recovery.”

Winston’s sad story comes as the RSPCA has launched its Cancel Out Cruelty campaign, to raise funds to help its busy frontline rescue teams continue to save animals from cruelty and abuse and to raise awareness about how to stop cruelty to animals for good.

On Tuesday 18 July, the charity received 4,060 calls to its cruelty lineon average six a minute during opening

hours - with 1,775 incidents investigated by frontline rescuers on its busiest day of the year.

Anyone with any information about what happened to Winston should call the RSPCA appeals line number on 0300 123 8018.

Kind-hearted delivery driver Leaum and his family are making a donation to help cover the branch’s vet bill. The branch is also taking donations from the public and can be contacted at branch@rspca-crewenantwich.org.uk

The Crewe and Nantwich Branch is also seeking homes for a female cat and her four kittens who were discovered at Nantwich Marina on Friday, July 14.

A narrowboat owner called the charity after she rescued one of the kittens who had fallen into the Shropshire Union Canal. Animal rescue officer Scarlet Sanderson went to the marina and collected the kitten and the four other felines, some of whom were found hiding in piping.

The branch has named the mother Doris (pictured), while her fleet-footed offspring are called Senna, Hamilton, Lando and Ricciardo after Formula One racing drivers.

Anyone who is interested in offering the cats a loving home should email the branch at catrehoming@rspcacrewenantwich.org.uk

n Heartbreaking figures released by the RSPCA have shown that repor ts of animals being beaten increased by 22% last year - with incidents peaking during the summer months, with three reported every minute. The charity has launched its Cancel Out Cruelty campaign, to raise funds to help its frontline rescue teams continue to save animals from cruelty. The RSPCA’s frontline rescuers, volunteers and a network of branches are working tirelessly to save animals this summer but we can't do it alone. Ollie – The Disabled Dog Searching for his Forever Home

Ollie is suspected to have been hit by a car as a young puppy which broke his back right leg. He was taken in off the streets but he wasn't given surgery so his leg was just left and as a result it healed incorrectly. Although he was taken off the streets he still wasn't safe. He was kept in a dark room with no windows and he was only let out of the room once a month. While he was being kept in this room he was also handled roughly and thrown down the stairs.

As soon as Miracle’s Mission heard about his story they knew they had to help him so they arranged for him to come to the UK to a foster home where he could be treated properly both physically and medically. He was assessed by a UK specialist vet and then underwent surgery to correctly fix his leg. The surgery was a huge success and he now uses his back leg again. He is now looking to complete the final stage of his journey to move to his forever home and finally get the happy ending that he deserves.

Ollie can now walk on all four legs. He enjoys short walks and loves a zoom around the garden. He is not a high energy dog but has short bursts of speed and play. He is happy to sun bathe in the garden for much of the day given the option to.

Ollie is a little fearful of men and will mostly avoid them if he can. If there is a man in the house he will take time to gain his trust. He copes very well with

women. Once you have his trust he is very loving and affectionate. He is also very puppy like and playful. He loves his toys and enrichment activities. He also enjoys his walks in familiar settings. He is not an outgoing or adventurous dog at the moment.

Miracle’s Mission is now seeking a permanent home for Ollie. Ollie has lived with dogs in Egypt but is not yet fully tested with dogs since arriving in foster care. But he could probably live with another calm confident dog, given slow and careful introductions. Ollie will need a patient family willing to put the time in to bond with him. He is a timid dog so would not be suited to a home with children.

Miracle's Mission is a non-profit animal welfare organisation that works with sick, injured and difficult animals. Its mission is to provide a place of safety for animals in danger, to educate on the need for neutering both pets and strays and to neuter stray dogs and cats to prevent the birth of more dogs and cats onto the streets.

Miracle’s Mission is named after a dog called Miracle who was rescued from the streets of Borneo at one week old, before her tiny eyes were even open. She had several injuries and was very weak, but she made a miraculous recovery and is now strong, happy and healthy living with her adopted brother Ben, and sisters Star and Tess. Miracle’s Mission is now working towards saving many more stray dogs and other stray animals

all around the world, starting in Borneo where Miracle was rescued, and the UK.

Pet Owners Unwittingly Feeding a Potential Pet Obesity Epidemic

Only 47% of owners check their pet’s weight at the vets and almost a third (30%) of pet owners admit to either never checking their pet’s weight at all or guessing, revealed the research by UK Pet Food, in partnership with Agria Pet Insurance.

38% of pet owners admit to giving their pets treats just because they look cute, and 22% to keep them quiet or occupied.

41% of owners agreed that table scraps were a possible cause of obesity, especially likely because human scraps can be higher in fat, salt, sugar and calories than pet foods. For example, one chunk of cheese for a cat is equivalent to nine chunks of cheese for a human.

The findings present a concerning picture because obesity in animals brings serious welfare issues, such as:

l Reduced quality and length of life

l Increased joint problems and arthritis

l Increased respiratory problems and heart disease

l Increased diabetes and some cancers

Alongside these life-changing risks, obesity risk again increases with neutering, due to a larger appetite and less activity, and on your furry friend reaching middle-age.

Agria’s partner, UK Pet Food, is a dedicated industry body for pet food, promoting best practice and providing free information on pet food and feeding. Best practice is to feed a

‘complete’ commercial pet food. The term complete on the pet food label means that the diet has been carefully formulated to provide all the nutrients a pet needs in the right proportions. This takes the guesswork out of feeding. All pet food packets include a feeding guideline to guide on how much to feed. Pet owners should start with the recommended amount based on your pet’s ideal weight. If in doubt, speak to your vet for advice.

Robin Hargreaves, Senior Veterinary Consultant for Agria Pet Insurance, comments: “As well as being a health risk in its own right, pet obesity also makes every single other health condition worse, from skin conditions to heart disease and arthritis. Furthermore, there are the increased risks with any

surgery that might be required on an animal that is obese. So many later-life problems can be either eliminated or mitigated by avoiding obesity, so vets always urge owners to have their pets weighed regularly to keep on top of their weight before it becomes an issue.”

Vicki Wentworth, Managing Director at Agria Pet Insurance, added: “Animal welfare is a top priority for Agria and we are committed to highlighting what owners can do to give their pets the best possible lives. We must address the uncomfortable topic of obesity, a major animal welfare issue and a big problem with the UK’s pets.”

Quarantine lifted at Redwings Hapton site

Redwings Horse Sanctuary’s

Asingle field of ponies within one of Redwings’ resident herds at their headquarters near Norwich was placed into precautionary quarantine last month.

Although the site is not a visitor centre, the charity, which is the biggest horse welfare charity in the UK, asked people who may have cause to walk through or attend a meeting at their HQ to adhere to the restrictions set up to prevent spread.

Nic de Brauwere, Head of Welfare and Behaviour at Redwings, said: “We routinely put precautionary quarantine in place on our farms when any equine shows possible signs of an infectious disease, as we did here. Once we had the positive diagnosis, we extended quarantine to all areas where possible spread might have taken place as a result of the normal movement of people and horses around the farm.

“We used blood tests and scoping to test horses that could have had direct or indirect contact with the case prior to the quarantine being set up and the good news is that none were infected or were themselves long term carriers.

“We’ve now passed the extended time period typically associated with transmission of the disease and have lifted quarantine in accordance with our protocols.

“Strangles is not airborne but spread by direct contact with infected material from affected horses, or indirectly through contamination of shared feed and water sources, people or objects. Moving our infected horse to the dedicated quarantine centre along with a close friend, and then isolating fields linked directly or indirectly to our patient, allowed us to contain it.”

The infected horse is an elderly resident who has been at Redwings for many years, and the charity hasn’t been managing any other cases of strangles at either this site or their quarantine yard, making it a puzzle as to how he became infected in the first place.

Nic said: “It’s very unusual to find a

case in a longer-term resident, but we approach it in the same way to ensure we haven’t missed a disease getting through our net or finding a new way into the herd.

“The version of strangles we have identified is lacking certain key features that would typically be expected when one gets a positive test result. We will share the lessons from this case to contribute to wider knowledge of the disease.

“The infected horse remains under treatment at our quarantine centre. He is coping well with this, and we are aiming to resolve this unusual case so he can return to our fields.”

As well as leading Strangles Awareness Week during the first week of May, Redwings has campaigned to improve biosecurity procedures and tackle the stigma associated with the disease since 2018 and has recruited hundreds of horse owners, yard managers and equine professionals to their Stamp Out Strangles pledge which aims to incentivize better biosecurity before an outbreak happens.

Andie McPherson, Campaigns Manager at Redwings, said: “In light of this case we'd encourage horse owners to remember not to become complacent about strangles and to be prepared to

respond to any signs of infectious disease until a specific cause like strangles can be ruled out.

“One way to be prepared for strangles is to take our Stamp Our Strangles Pledge and make that simple commitment to good biosecurity best practices. Don't forget to get your yard involved next May to help promote disease prevention.”

Strangles is the most diagnosed equine infectious disease worldwide. Symptoms of the contagious respiratory illness range, but include a high fever, laboured breathing, difficulty eating, depression, thick nasal discharge and painful abscesses. In severe cases

Strangles can pose a risk to the horse’s life. There are complications in approximately 30% of cases and it is impossible to know which horses will require extra care and treatment. For the cost of a thermometer and spotting fever, owners can minimise scale and spread.

n Please visit Redwings’ website to make your pledge to good biosecurity practices and find out more about strangles:

Dog Bitten By Adder In UK - Dog Expert Weighs In and Advises Dog Owners How To Help Bitten Pups

Reports of a dog being bitten by an Adder in Scotland and dog owners are understandably leaving dog owners worried. Dog experts at Kennel Store have weighed in and advised owners on what to do if their dog is bitten, the symptoms of an adder bite and how to treat a bite.

“If your dog is bitten by a snake, it can be scary and the symptoms can progress quickly.

First steps for a snake bite

1. Stay calm - it's important to stay as calm as possible to be able to help your dog.

2. If you see the snake, try to remember what it looks like or take a photo whilst maintaining a safe distance. Never go looking for the snake, attempt to get close, touch it or harm it in any way. Adders are a protected species, therefore it is illegal to injure or kill them, and they can bite people if disturbed).

3. Try to keep your dog as still as possible. This prevents the venom from spreading around their body.

4. Don’t touch the bite. Don’t apply a bandage or dressing.

5. Call your vet and inform them of the situation and that you will be bringing your dog into the practice.

6. If possible, bring a car to your dog and depending on their weight, carry them to the car.

Symptoms of an adder bite

Adder bite symptoms can take anywhere between a few minutes to an hour to develop. They are typically worse in a dog that has been bitten on the face, or neck. If the venom gets into the bloodstream, symptoms will be severe.

Mild symptoms:

• Pain and swelling around the bite area

• Limping (if bitten on a leg)

• A few small bite marks

Serious symptoms:

• Pale gums

• Panting

• Drooling

• Vomiting and diarrhea

Potentially life-threatening symptoms:

• Swelling to the face or neck

• Weakness and wobbling

• Severe bruising and abnormal bleeding

• Tremors and seizures

• Difficulty breathing

• Collapsing

• Sudden death can occur if adder venom is injected straight into the bloodstream, so it’s important to act fast

Treatment

If your dog has been bitten, it's important they see a vet as soon as possible, don’t delay by attempting treatment at home. Treatment can vary and depends on the symptoms they develop, but it will likely involve:

• Strong pain relief

• Attentive monitoring - your vet will monitor your dog closely and keep an eye out for any complications such as heart problems, kidney failure and bleeding issues. It’s likely that your dog will be required to stay in for monitoring and investigations (such as ECG and blood tests) for at least 24 hours unless they only have very mild

symptoms, which your vet will be able to identify the severity of your dogs symptoms.

• A fluid drip - this will support their internal organs (such as the kidneys, liver, and heart), and help if they have gone into shock following the bite.

• Antihistamines - to help reduce swelling and further symptoms developing.

In more severe cases, your dog might require the following:

• Anti-venom - anti-venom is sometimes required in more severe cases. However, there is a small risk of drug reaction when using anti-venom, and it can be difficult to get hold of.

• Antibiotics - this will only be necessary if your dog develops an infection around the site of the wound

• Surgery - in some cases, dogs can develop necrosis (tissue death) around the bite wound. If your dog develops necrosis, they may require an operation to remove the dead tissue.”

Keep your dog cool with the ClimaCOOL jacket

We’ve all experienced those days when it’s too hot to walk our dogs, especially in the mid-day heat. The pavements reach unbearable temperatures and our dogs struggle to get comfortable even indoors in the shade. During a heatwave, dogs large and small look for shade and cold floors to lie on, as they’re unable to regulate their body temperature as efficiently as us.

The George Barclay, ClimaCOOL® Dog Jacket, uses natural evaporative cooling, to help keep you dog cool during hot weather.

Should You Feed Birds Every Day?

How Often Should You Feed Birds

To ensure that you maintain birds’ health as well as ensure they are frequent visitors in your garden, it is advised that you put food into your bird feeders once a day. This being said, however, how often you feed birds depends on the season as well as the number of birds that are visiting your feeders.

Although there is no harm in putting food out every day, it’s important that you stay vigilant on the amount of food that birds are consuming, and alter the amount you give according to this. To avoid food going bad, reduce the amount of food you offer to birds if you notice there is any leftover frequently.

Although birds don’t necessarily have specific feeding times, it's helpful if you aim to put out food at a similar time each day, this way they know when to visit your garden. This helps get them into a routine and develop the habit of maintaining a healthy diet - much like humans in that sense!

Feeding Birds In Summer

Summer is usually the time that natural food sources are in abundance, however, food shortages can happen year round.During the summer months, birds usually moult and breed and so they require a high-protein diet to gain enough energy and strength.

Birds, during summer, tend to burn more energy and so it is really helpful to offer birds extra nutrients should they need it.

Foods rich in protein such as sunflower seeds, nyjer seeds and live food like mealworms are great choices during the warmer months.

Feeding Birds In Winter

It is so important to support birds’ wellness during winter by offering them

a frequent food source.

If you can, we advise even putting out food twice a day if they need it.

Food sources that are high in fat are the most beneficial during this time. Birds require a fat reserve during the especially bitter cold night we experience in Britain. Not only for this reason though, but many species of birds also tend to migrate during the cold winters and so require high levels of energy for the long flights.

Food such as suet that is specifically high in fat content is a great choice for winter.

What To Do If You’re On Holiday

Birds aren’t your children, although they require our help to maintain optimal health and wellness, you can of course go on holiday!

We advise that on the run up to leaving home, whether it be for a holiday or moving house, you start to minimise how much food you leave in the feeders. Birds are a creature of habit and if they notice less food in

their favourite spot, they will simply find somewhere else - no hard feelings! Weaning birds to form a different habit is simple, but it takes time. To ensure the best for your garden visitors, be sure to do it over time.

Feeding Birds With Kennedy Wild Bird Food

At Kennedy Wild Bird Food we pride ourselves on not only offering great quality bird food but brilliant advice on how and when to feed birds. If you would like to understand more about how often you should feed birds, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with a member of our team today!

n Alternatively, call us on 01778 342 665 if you have any questions for us.

As always, if you are lucky enough to spot a new or interesting bird species, be sure to log it in the Birdspotter App! You can find it here https://birdspotter.kennedywildbirdfood.co.uk/

Although there is no black and white rule book as to how often you should feed birds, there are ways in which you can ensure that they keep coming back and stay healthy!

Small Pet Rodent Awareness Week

18th - 24th September 2023

SPRAW was founded back in 2021 by One Voice for Animals UK (An animal welfare establishment with the aim to raise awareness into the rescue world, help achieve animals welfare standards and help raise much needed funds) and Greatfield Small Animal Rescue (A Worcestershire based Rabbit, Bird and Rodent Rescue).

Since then, we have brough on board an additional weather of knowledge with several other partners: https://www.smallpetrodentawarenessweek.co.uk/who-we-are

The awareness week was created as there was an obvious lack of awareness to small rodent needs especially the smaller rodents such as Chinchillas, Degus, Hamsters, Rats, Mice and Hamsters.

We are extremely excited to bring to you the third Small Pet Rodent Awareness Week which will take place 18th - 24th September 2023.

This year’s theme is Delicious Diets, we will cover a variety of information and tips from foods to avoid, how to create natural feeding, how often to feed and much more.

This year follows on from last years Awesome Environments and our first year of introduction into small rodents. We look forward to you following us for this year’s awareness week on Facebook and Instagram.

Brixton’s Beloved WomenOwned Social Enterprise Set to Transform Lives for the people and pups of Peckham

Paws & Pause Expands Mission to Peckham: Unleashing Opportunities for Recovery and Employment

Brixton's Beloved Women-Owned Social Enterprise Set to Transform Lives for the people and pups of Peckham Paws & Pause

The groundbreaking dog daycare that provides employment training programs for individuals recovering from substance addiction and mental ill health, has expanded its compassionate mission to Peckham. With its success in its first site in Brixton since its inception in 2019, Paws & Pause is ready to empower even more individuals, while providing top-notch dog care services to local residents.

Breaking the mold of traditional dog daycare centers, Paws & Pause offers a life-transforming experience for people seeking a fresh start. Through their trainee program, participants develop the essential confidence and skills needed to enter or re-enter the workplace. 42 individuals since opening have completed the comprehensive sixmonth training program, 85% of whom have gone on to employment, education and self employment. With the new site opening, they will be able to triple the number of people they work with annually.

With the expansion to Peckham, Paws & Pause aims to extend their program to the local community. Simultaneously,

residents will have the chance to benefit from the 5-star licensed dog daycare service, which has helped facilitate workers' return to the office since Covid-19. Enrichment, play, and rest are carefully balanced to ensure each dog receives the love and attention they deserve by dedicated staff who get to know each dog through a personalized

approach.

By expanding to Peckham, this womenowned social enterprise is determined to continue making a difference, one paw at a time.
