Dear Friends, I really don’t understand WHY the clock have been turned back an hour! It is 5.30pm and already dark. I am looking out of the window knowing that my early evening walk will not be

as much fun as last week since I won’t be able to chase my ball in the rec and will have to stay on my lead. Mistress and I will have to negotiate puddles and pot holes while I try to find somewhere suitably fitting to do my business! Being a bit unwell and old I often do loads of wees on my walks and I do like to see where I am going and ensure I miss some splashing on my tail! Also I worry that if I have a runny bum, how is Mistress going to clear that up! I see no benefit in changing the clocks and making our cold winter evenings even more uninviting for us furries to go out in. I don’t think many humans are that pleased with the time change either. Only this morning Mistress moaned that at a time when we are trying to keep our electricity bills down we now have to turn the lights on much earlier than usual. That’s enough of me moaning. I have noticed the older I get the grumpier I become and I may get less treats for saying this but I have noticed Mistress ‘Meldrew’ is even worse than me. Not wishing to alarm you but there are only about 8 more weeks until Christmas!!! So my furry friends, time to write a list of some gifts you may want Santa Paws to put in your stocking. All I want for Christmas is good health and I am feeling such a lot better at the moment. Oh and maybe a fluorescent coat to make dog walking in the darker evenings a ‘Stroll in the park’ For some Christmas gift ideas you may not have thought of yet, take a look at the great range of ideas for you and your owners in this issue!

Dogs Trust Loughborough on the lookout for a new home for it’s Biggest ever resident Dogs Trust Loughborough is calling on local residents to consider giving a forever home to Major, an 11-year-old Anatolian Shepherd who weighs an astonishing 81 kilograms.

ajor was taken in by the team at Dogs Trust Loughborough following the death of his owner. Now, Dogs Trust Loughborough’s mission is to find Major a loving home, while also raising awareness on the critical issue of obesity in dogs. Major, who holds the title of being the heaviest dog ever cared for by Dogs Trust Loughborough, faces the challenge of osteoarthritis, potentially linked to his weight. Major is currently on a weight-loss programme, which includes regular exercise sessions in the Hydrotherapy & Physio suite and a carefully managed diet to help him shed weight and maintain an active lifestyle. Major loves to be in the company of people and would thrive in a home where his family could be around for the majority of the day. Despite his age, he enjoys having short games of chase with his carers and is eager to interact with other dogs, so would love some walking friends out and about. Major boasts an excellent track record in housetraining and travels well in the car. However, due to his age and size, some assistance, such as ramp training, may be beneficial to ensure his comfort during car travel. The Purple Poppy Blooms – But Buyer Aware! The purple poppy has long been a symbol of remembrance for animals but until recently was little known compared to the traditional red poppy.

any millions of animals have served over the years, and many continue to serve today, yet for far too long their efforts have been overlooked. Eight years ago, Murphy’s Army took on the role of Ambassadors of Animal Remembrance in the UK and launched their first Purple Poppy Campaign. Their aim was to bring to the public’s attention the contributions made by service animals, and to raise funds for related causes. At that point in time, it was not possible to purchase a purple poppy online. Fast forward to 2023 and a very different story emerges. Selling platforms and social media sites are now awash with purple poppies. That’s good news, isn’t it? Well, it’s certainly good news that the animals are being given their rightful recognition but sadly not all of the purple poppies on sale help the causes they claim to support. Many businesses are profiteering from the rise in popularity and cashing in on people’s goodwill. A spokesperson for the charity said ‘We are very proud not only to have spread the word about the significance of the purple poppy but also to have helped many former service animals along the way. Animals have played and continue to play a vital part in protecting us, and it is only right that they receive the recognition they deserve. To see businesses and other rogue organisations cashing in on such a poignant matter is extremely upsetting. It is not just about the funds which genuine charities are losing out on, but the fact that they prey on people’s good nature too’. Animals have played a vital role in conflicts over the years, working alongside their human counterparts, often in harrowing conditions yet showing incredible loyalty and bravery. Love Island winner visits London dog charity Love Island star Sammy Root visited Dogs Trust West London this week, to see first-hand the work the charity does.

he 23-year-old visited the centre in Harefield, West London. He toured the centre, visited the dogs, and spoke to staff about a number of issues – including the costof-living. The social media star also donated to the charity himself, buying dog blankets for the centre. He additionally urged people to donate to Dogs Trust West London, where blankets, treats, and wet food are needed for the winter months. Sammy Root said: “Before coming to the centre I already knew what an amazing job the Dogs Trust does but seeing it first-hand was an amazing experience. “Each and every team member we met was so passionate about changing dogs’ lives and we learned more about the other ways people can help, like donating food for their food bank, and fostering when a dog is struggling in the shelter.” The winner of Love Island 2023 also revealed that he intends to continue working with the charity. Sammy added: “In the short term I hope to work with the Dogs Trust to encourage people to donate bedding and other urgent things the West London centre needs. “In the long term we’re going to be working together to use my platform to rehome the dogs in the shelter who deserve a second chance at life. Dogs Trust offers expert advice as one in three dog owners seek support for ﬁreworks-related behaviour Ahead of upcoming firework festivities, Dogs Trust, the UK’s largest dog welfare charity has issued advice to owners on how to take care of their canine friends, with one in three owners from a recent survey looking to seek advice around firework related behaviour.

new study by experts at the University of Salford has also affirmed that dogs are sensitive to a greater range of firework noise sound than first thought, confirming it’s best to keep dogs indoors during fireworks to limit distress for our fourlegged friends and keep them safe. Dogs Trust recommends that dog owners prepare early and urges owners to visit its website for full guidance on how to help dogs stay safe and settled during fireworks. Jenna Kiddie, Head of Behaviour at Dogs Trust said: “Fear of fireworks is worryingly common 12

in dogs of all ages, and it can have a significant impact on their wellbeing and affect dogs at any time in their lives. “Dogs respond to fireworks in a range of different ways, so it’s crucial to have a clear plan, ahead of time, to help your own dog cope. Some dogs will want to find a cosy hiding place, others will want reassurance. If your dog does seem worried, it’s worth distracting them with a game or treats to keep their attention away from the noises outside. Owners can visit the Dogs Trust website for top tips on what to do when fireworks have started.”

Never force a dog outside during fireworks. • If your dog has shown signs of fear towards fireworks, reach out to your vet for advice, and give the dog any prescribed medication before fireworks start, it might be that vets www.rescueandanimalcare.com

can prescribe last minute medication to help your dog cope, if necessary. • Owners should check that their house and garden are escape-proof. Dogs could try to run away if they’re scared so check doors, windows and fences are secure. Industry Collaboration Fellow Zuzanna Podwinska from the University of Salford said: “Our research suggests that dogs may be more sensitive to low frequency booms and vibration than previously thought. Unfortunately, it is difficult to reduce these kinds of sounds coming into the home. We plan to look at how effective ‘doggy dens’ might be in the future to evaluate how they might protect against the kinds of sounds that are associated with distress responses. However, the most effective way to reduce exposure is to be far enough away from firework displays for the overall sound levels to be reduced or for displays to avoid the kinds of fireworks that produce low frequency booms. As such, dog owners should follow the advice to protect their pets but they

Storm now with her new family

Dog rescued by RSPCA from frozen yard ﬁnds her forever home with vet nurse Storm was found starving in sub-zero temperatures with two other dogs

former guard dog left in conditions of appalling neglect has started a new life with the vet assistant who nursed her back to wellness. German Shepherd cross Storm was left without supervision for a week in freezing temperatures in a bleak yard in Staffordshire along with two other dogs and some ferrets. The animals were discovered by RSPCA inspectors Pam Bird and Dawn Burrell confined to the compound without food and bedding materials in their kennels, while water bowls had frozen during a cold snap in December last year. The emaciated body of a lurcher dog was frozen to the ground at the location, while another lurcher, who was also severely underweight, passed away later as a result of the appalling conditions 16

the animals were forced to endure. Storm (pictured in the yard, right) was fortunate to survive the ordeal and the inspectors believe it was because she was left loose in the yard that she may have scavenged for food waste and caught rats to eat. But she was still extremely hungry and thirsty when she arrived at Hope Veterinary Surgery in Stoke-on-Trent where she first met practice nurse Bethany Poole. She was so well behaved, apart from trying to steal the treat bag, and she stayed a night at the practice before she went off to kennels. “But I kept thinking about her and then three months later when she came back to the practice to be spayed I recognised her instantly. I knew then I wanted her to come home with me. “Now she has a proper dog's life with a big brother and sister who have helped build her confidence and taught her what toys are. She has settled in perfectly and has really put behind what was a really terrible experience and she recently enjoyed a walking holiday with me.” The conditions of neglect the animals were subjected to led to a successful prosecution case by the RSPCA and inspector Bird recalled: “It was truly a dreadful thing to see when we arrived at the yard during a very cold period last year when the outside temperature was minus 4C. We were met by Storm who was barking behind a large metal gate, behind which there were kennels and a static caravan. There was a cream coloured dog lying motionless on the floor by a kennel. We called for police assistance and eventually put Storm in the back of our van. But another lurcher dog had collapsed and we wrapped her in a towel and took her to a nearby vets, where she was put on heat pads and a drip. Sadly, she passed away several days later. “Storm was very nervous and distressed when she first came into the care of the RSPCA. But we think that because she was loose in the yard, unlike the other dogs, she was able to

find food and that kept her alive, although we don’t know for sure. “It is so nice to hear how well she is doing now with her new owner and after dealing with this case it really cheered us up to hear of her progress.” A dead ferret was also found at the yard, but another rodent, who had lost the use of her back legs, has made a recovery at a ferret rescue in Chester. This month the RSPCA launched a month-long Adoptober https://www.rspca.org.uk/whatwedo/la test/adoptober rehoming campaign to help find new homes for dogs like Storm. The animal charity is facing its biggest rehoming crisis in recent memory. The animal charity’s rescue centres and branches are full to bursting with unwanted animals as more animals come into care than are being adopted. The number of animals being adopted has been falling in recent years. In 2022, the RSPCA found homes for 27,535 animals - but that’s 30% less than three years ago (in 2019) - when 39,178 animals were rehomed.

Appeal after abandoned cat with broken leg found with four kittens in Hull layby The mother is recovering and will be rehomed by her kind-hearted rescuers

he RSPCA is appealing for information after a badly-injured cat was abandoned with her kittens in a layby in Humberside. The felines were spotted by member of the public Shane Maddison, and were huddled together in undergrowth in the layby on the A1079 Hull Road, Dunswell, on the outskirts of Hull on September 22. Shane, who had pulled over for a break while driving, went to fetch some cat food and milk to entice the cats from their hiding spot. He issued a social media appeal for help and RSPCA inspector Laura Barber attended the location where Shane and two of his relatives along with two other members of the public were trying to catch the cats. All five were eventually caught and placed in a cardboard box, although one of the kittens managed to escape from the box triggering an hour-long search before she was rescued again and placed in the safety of the inspector’s cat carrier. X-rays taken at a local vets showed the mother had suffered serious injuries, including a broken hip and leg. There were fears she may need to have her injured leg amputated, but her condition has since improved while she and her family are being cared for by Shane’s brother, Liam, and sister-in-law Alex Wilde. Sadly, this is the latest in a growing number of abandonment incidents dealt with by the charity. In September, 1,969 incidents of abandonment were reported to the RSPCA - higher than the number in that month in 2020, 2021 and 2022. The RSPCA has thanked the rescuers for their kindness and plan to help them with a contribution to the costs of health checks and vaccinations as well as microchipping before the cats are rehomed. The animal charity is also appealing for anyone who may know how the cats

came to be left in such desperate circumstances to contact the appeals line number on 0800 123 8018. Inspector Barber said: “She is a very friendly cat and it was clear she was not feral and has been owned by someone. We don’t know whether she was hit by a car and then gave birth to her kittens among the rubbish at the side of the layby after limping across for shelter or if she was dumped there having already been injured. “Fortunately, she is making a great recovery. She had a vet check 10 days after she was found and her pelvic bone and leg are healing. There is no need for an amputation to be undertaken and she will continue to get better with more rest. “We can only thank Shane, his relatives and the other members of the public who attended for taking the time to come to their aid. It was quite a lengthy rescue as at one stage all the kittens were in the box, but then

one of them jumped back into the undergrowth. “We put some smelly food down and when the kitten reappeared, Shane managed to carefully grab her and put her in my carrier.” Shane’s relatives are so smitten by the feline family that they plan to adopt the mother and are making arrangements to fix up new homes for the kittens with friends. They have called the mother Luna and her kittens Boo, Daphne, Pumpkin and Fred. Shane said: “I was putting some litter in the bin when I saw Luna and didn’t think anything of it as I thought she was feral, but then two kittens followed her out of the undergrowth. So I went back to the layby with some cat food and milk and she was unbelievably tame. “When I realised she had four kittens I called my sister-in-law to come and help as I realised that someone had dumped them there. Cat with two noses discovered at charity adoption centre A distinctive-looking homeless cat has astounded her carers after it was revealed she has two noses.

A check-up by the centre’s vet revealed she in fact has two noses, caused by a congenital abnormality. Named Nanny McPhee after the fictional witch with a famously deformed nose, the black-and-white cat has suffered no ill effects from her double snout. Cats Protection’s Senior Field Veterinary Officer Fiona Brockbank said: “This is a real rarity and, thankfully, it isn’t causing her any problems at all. A cat with two noses is a first for us in the Field Vet team. “Other congenital malformations within that area of a cat such as a cleft lip and cleft palate are not uncommon and can either be inherited or due to incident whilst developing in the uterus. Like all of our cats Nanny McPhee will be neutered before rehoming so any concerns about inherited problems are resolved as she won’t have kittens.” Nanny McPhee was handed in to the Warrington Adoption Centre with two other cats after their owner’s ill health and financial circumstances meant they could no longer care for them. Centre Manager Lindsay Kerr said: “We have all fallen in love with our oneof-a-kind Nanny McPhee. We can’t stop looking at her two noses! “She has proven to be a gentle lady who adores a fuss and a cuddle and we

are hopeful her new-found fame will mean she will have no shortage of potential adopters. She really does deserve a home where she can settle down and become the centre of a loving family.”

Beware of the cat burglar! Here’s how your cat ﬂap could cost you thousands Many may be familiar with the term ‘cat burglar’ - a thief who gains entry to homes undetected.

Ahead of National Cat Day, David Joyson, Chief Customer Officer at Homeprotect, warns outdoor cat owners about what to be aware of if you have a cat flap…

The implications of having a cat flap

Many cat flaps or pet doors operate on a hinged, spring-loaded panel and can be fitted to non-standard doors. While this mechanism allows your cat to roam freely, there’s a risk that stealthy burglars could use it as a quick and easy way to gain access to your home. Just last year, a prolific burglar was found guilty of entering a home in London thanks to a cat flap at the property. By simply putting their hand through a cat flap, opportunistic burglars could reach inside and gain access to keys placed in the door or even a door handle of an unlocked property from the inside. Some may even use fishing rods or tools seen in ‘letterbox burglaries’. While the police will deal with this type of burglary, unforced entry likely won’t be covered by your home insurance policy. That’s because most home insurance policies only provide theft-cover where the thief causes damage while trying to get into your home/outbuilding or where violence or deception is used to gain entry. With no evidence of entry, victims could be left with void policies and unable to claim on their contents insurance, potentially resulting in them losing thousands of pounds worth of valuables or damaged possessions. 22

How to protect your home

1. Invest in a magnetic or microchip cat flap Plenty of modern pet doors on the market are manufactured to be accessible only to your cat. Magnetic cat flaps require owners to place a magnetic collar key on their pet, so only your cat will be able to gain access. You can even get cat flaps which are able to read your cat’s unique microchip ID which means you don’t need a separate collar or accessory. Both options mean the miniature door will only unlock when your cat wants to go in or out, stopping foreign pets or humans from accessing your home. 2. Position your cat flap in a discrete location When choosing where to position your cat flap, consider how exposed and

3. Lock and remove keys from doors (particularly those near your cat flap!) According to statistics, a large percentage of homeowners often leave keys in the door or forget to lock it. Not only could this (alone) invalidate a theft claim, it provides burglars with more of an opportunity to access your home without forced entry. So, while the door is out of use, whether during the day, overnight or while the property is unattended, ensure the door is locked and that keys are taken out and placed out of sight. 4. Keep valuables out of sight Similarly, if your valuables are on show near your cat flap or windows, this may attract burglars to target your property. Mayhew charity issues urgent plea for adopters as 66 black cats and kittens need forever homes – more than double the number of days in October! The London-based animal welfare charity, Mayhew, is on a mission to find adopters for an influx of black cats and kittens this Black Cat Awareness month.

f the 117 cats currently at Mayhew, of all different colours, 56% are black cats and kittens. The charity is urgently appealing for adopters to give these charming felines their forever homes. Over the past year, Mayhew has witnessed a significant rise in the number of dogs and cats being given up for adoption or abandoned. As a result, many have spent extended periods awaiting a second chance at happiness. Despite their delightful personalities, unique beauty, and boundless love, these solid-coloured felines are often overlooked in adoption centres. Black cats and kittens can take longer to rehome than other cat types, with data from a 2018 RSPCA study showing that on average it takes 10 days longer to re-home a black cat or black and white cat than a ginger one. And with more than 66 of them currently in the historic shelter in West London, that’s more black cats and kittens in Mayhew’s care than there are the number of days in October, Black Cat Awareness Month.

Meet Northern’s depot cats who have found their ‘furever’ home on the railway Almost ten years ago, a skinny black cat showed up at one of Northern’s Lancashire depots cold and hungry. The team at Blackpool took him in and named him ‘Max’.

nd he must have spread the word that the depot was a purr-fect place to live as ‘Ginge’ has now also chosen to make it his home after he too was found abandoned. The pair now preside over the depot, keeping work on-track, when they’re not napping in the mess room or demanding treats from their colleagues. The team has even built a cosy wooden house for them outside although they both usually prefer to hang-out indoors. Northern has shared some images of the lucky moggies ‘at home’ at Northern’s Blackpool depot. Simon Crabtree, production delivery manager at Northern, said: “The team love Max and Ginge and are proud to take care of them - and they all chip in to pay for the vet bills and food. “Because the depot operates 24-hours a day, there’s always someone around to make a fuss of them – and they’re great company for us. “They are important members of our team here at the depot.” Northern is the second largest train operator in the UK, with 2,500 services a day to more than 500 stations across the North of England.

Will Robbie, Fergus and Luna get re-homed before Christmas to light up their lives? Robbie is a 4yr old neutered black and white short coated collie He originally came into our care from another rescue, we don't know his history but we were told he is good with other dogs and cats but can sometimes “herd” people. We did place him in a home but he was returned after 3 weeks as he snapped at the owners 7yr old child after she had stopped fussing him, no contact made. When meeting new people and children he is calm and friendly but due to the above incident we wouldn't house him with children under 13yrs old. He is housetrained, is good when left alone for several hours, knows basic commands and interacts well with visitors to the home. He is restless travelling but is slowly improving. He does lunge at traffic when out walking. Whilst in our care he has been affectionate towards all staff members, has been out walking with volunteers and has been good being examined by the vet.

Give a Dog a chance to settle down So you have taken the step to rehome a dog who has come into rescue through no fault of its own. Perhaps things have changed with its home environment, its owner has sadly passed away, or just simply from a home where they can neither afford the dog or give it the time it needs.

he golden rule with a new rescue is GIVE IT TIME TO SETTLE. Imagine you lost your home and were relocated to a place you did not know. Could you instantly adapt to your surroundings? The answer is no none of us can we all need to time to adjust. A dog is no different and especially for the older dog there can be confusion, upset and behavioural change. An older dog that has been clean all its life might suddenly start weeing or pooing in the house, purely through stress. We recently placed an older dog into a home which we thought was absolutely right for him with a family who had dogs all their lives and were the right age for the dog. Within 24 hours they wanted the dog packed off to the vet to have him castrated. Everything he knew was changed, his haven and comfort zone was taken away from him, his food was changed overnight and not a lot of his previous life was left. Poor dog was

stressed beyond belief, and we certainly were not packing him off to the vet within 7 days of his move. Yes the deed would have been done once he had found his feet and was happy with surroundings and his new people. Needless to say he came back to us and a new more understanding home was found for him. With a rescue dog it is a softly softly approach every time and you will get the very best out of it but it takes time. Yes, there must be ground rules from day one and start as you mean to go on. If you don’t want the dog on the furniture then it’s a NO, if you don’t want it upstairs then its a NO. If the rescue have done their work properly then your dog will come with a resume of their life in their previous home and what the ground rules/ commands were. Follow this and you will win. Try changing everything from name to commands then you are on a road

that will be a long and winding one that may never end. You can retrain but it all takes time and effort with a new dog. If you are not prepared to put the work in at the start then a rescue dog is not for you. Please, have feelings for the dog as it has lost everything it knows and loves, especially the older ones. Youngsters often adapt more easily but still require the same amount of care. So above all remember the golden rule ALWAYS be kind and patient with your new dog and it will repay you with respect and love for all its life. His story, together with nine other favourite entries, will be included in the Golden Oldies Gallery being shared across the brand’s social media platforms which have a combined following of more than 80,000. Earlier this year, to celebrate the many reasons why it’s amazing to own a senior horse or pony, the makers of SPILLERS invited anyone with a precious senior equine friend to share their story. From the numerous entries received the SPILLERS brand team selected the top ten and one overall champion Golden Oldie. “I had a wonderful time reading all the entries,” said Danni Twose, Marketing Assistant at Mars Horsecare, home of the SPILLERS brand. “And I must admit that I had some tear-jerking moments too! It was a very tough call for us to whittle down the list to our favourite ten and then to choose an overall Golden Oldie but Apollo’s magical story moved us all and we were unanimous with our decision.” Clare O’Keefe has owned Apollo for 21 years. The Friesian gelding came over from Holland as a four-year-old stallion to start his training as a carriage driving horse. He became part of the Harrods coach and horse team and he and his driving partner Spartacus regularly pulled the Harrods carriage around London, advertising the iconic store. They made deliveries, greeted tourists and regularly visited Kensington Palace where they met several members of the royal family. They often carried important guests to Harrods in the carriage including

Santa at Christmas time! “I worked at the Harrods stables looking after Apollo and Spartacus,” said Clare. “I was lucky enough to be able to buy Apollo in 2002 when it was announced that the stables were closing, and all the horses were being sold. “Apollo had a busy life in his younger years and worked very hard so now he’s older I take it easy with him and don’t do much, though he still likes to get out and about otherwise he gets bored. We still enjoy hacking out, riding around the farm where he’s kept and going to the occasional local show. “When I had a bad riding accident on another horse, I almost gave up riding, but it was thanks to Apollo for rebuilding my confidence that I carried on. Lots of my friends and their children have also enjoyed riding him over the years. “Apollo can be very cheeky at times and likes to slip his headcollar off when he’s tied up, though he doesn’t usually go very far when he does. He can also undo gates and at my previous yard he used to undo the field gate and let all the horses out! “Now he’s getting older Apollo has trouble with his teeth and can’t eat hay he occasionally tries to but can’t chew it and ends up spitting it out. Instead, I give him SPILLERS Senior Super-Mash which he loves, as well as SPILLERS High Fibre Cubes (soaked). Darlington Shih Tzu becomes 8000th to join groundbreaking dog welfare study Dogs Trust is celebrating a major milestone in welcoming its 8,000th dog to their innovative Generation Pup study.

he 8,000th dog to enrol in the study is an adorable 12-week-old Shih Tzu named Daphne Rose based in Darlington. Generation Pup is believed to be the first longitudinal study to include all breeds/crossbreeds of dogs and includes behaviour as well as health problems. The study, founded in 2016, follows dogs through their lifetime, from under 16 weeks to adulthood. By collecting information from each puppy; ranging from health, environment, behavioural experiences, the study aims to discover whether early life experiences, genetics and environmental factors influence the health, welfare and behaviour of dogs.

A Galgo Love Story, Healing and Inspiration… As long time Greyhound adopters we had been unaware of the plight of the Galgo until lockdown and a lot of time spent of Instagram meant that we saw the terrible things that these beautiful dogs suffer. After losing our much-loved greyhound boy in the summer of 2020 we were devastated but determined to adopt a Galgo once we felt ready.

e spoke to the lovely Sue at Greyhounds In Need about what we could offer (we live on a narrowboat) and two potential hounds were suggested for us. One was a tripawd boy who had been overlooked a bit due to his disability. I have to admit I was a bit nervous about that especially as we lived on a boat and sometimes that involved negotiating a gangplank when the floods came….. However, Sue remained positive and just said come and see how he moves…… So, we jumped in the car and drove down to meet them and see who would choose us! When we met the first boy, Tyson as he was called then, it was love at first sight for us and Sue seemed to 38

think he would be a great fit for us. He was a confident lad who happily took treats from us and showed us his zoomie prowess. He seemed very agile which allayed some of our concerns. We went home and I embarked on a project of contacting anyone I could find on social media who had a three-legged hound to try and get some kind of idea of how life with a tripawd might look and what we would need to do to make life for him as comfortable as possible. We had only ever had hounds with 4 legs, and it felt a bit daunting, as ever knowledge is the key (for me anyway). I found a lovely lady who remains a good friend, a senior vets nurse now working as a hydro therapist who has three galgos of her own, two of

which are tripawds! She was such a help and support and patiently answered all my questions. We decided that with a little modification to make the small steps into the boat easier for him that we would love to give this gorgeous boy his sweet life if he would like us to, so we arranged another visit to collect him and began making preparations for his arrival. The day came to collect him, and we excitedly picked him up amid a flurry of coats (it was winter and funnily enough we had always bought GIN Blizzard coats for our other hounds, so we stocked up while there) and set off for home. We had decided to change his name to Tai www.rescueandanimalcare.com

which means great in Chinese. Well, what a confident boy we had! we were so surprised, he walked in the boat like he already owned it and straight on to his new bed. He was calm on his first walk, and I will never forget how he jumped straight up on to our bed for a bedtime cuddle and snuggled himself down between us as if he had been there since a puppy. He still likes to sleep curled up with you, what a cuddle monster he is. Tai has been with us for 20 months now and he is such a treasure. What a personality he is! He loves people and his favourite treat is to have a trip in to the heart of Leicester city where he usually gets a ton of fuss from all sorts of people. He adores the sights and sounds of the city, which totally surprised us! He does have some favourite sighthound pals, mostly Greyhounds (we often walk with the local Greyhound group) but he much prefers people to other dogs. He is very reactive to dogs he doesn’t know but we have done a lot of training with this, and he is now a star with his clicker, and we can walk in busy dog areas but as he is much more comfortable with less dog traffic, we tend to keep to quieter routes. He is a star with training and is such a quick learner, something that is very different from other Greyhounds we have had. He loves to learn new things which is great for a disabled dog as he can’t walk or run as far as four legged and it keeps him happy. www.rescueandanimalcare.com

He is such a loving boy, he is a delight and we often wonder at how well he has adapted to home life. There is so much I could say about living with a tripawd but I will try to keep it brief! One of the first things we did was take him to a physiotherapist for an assessment and to get some idea of how far we could walk him safely and any exercises we could do to help him stay strong. This was invaluable. One of the best things we did was take him to a Canine Clinical Massage Therapist, he goes every 4 to 6 weeks and it’s an absolute gamechanger for him. He develops knots in his muscles due to the abnormal gait of a tri (he is missing his rear left) and the massage addresses this brilliantly. We build up Tais muscles for walking very slowly over about 6 months and we had an amazing first year with him where he could easily manage hours walk and lots of zoomies, but he sadly developed arthritis in his hip about 8 months ago. This was something we were expecting, though hoping we might escape, its very common in tripawds for obvious reasons. With the help of our vet, we manage this with medication and modified exercise. We also regularly use enrichment food toys which he loves, and we are using our insurance to have hydrotherapy sessions for him. He has good days and bad days and it can be a real roller coaster at first but he is still able to walk for around 30 mins at a time unless he is in the middle of a flare up. GIN are very kindly helping us to get him seen by one of the first Musculoskeletal Arthritis clinics in the UK which just happens to be quite near to us. So watch this space! For anyone managing a dog with arthritis

there is a brilliant group called Canine Arthritis Management and they are so informative and helpful. Tai is still relatively young at 7 and there is a lot we can do to manage his health so that he can live his fullest life possible and pain free. He is still a happy loving confident boy and long may it continue. He constantly surprises us with the amount of love he gives, what an inspiration he is. These dogs are so amazing, after all they have been through. There is so much more to say but not any more space so please look at these photos instead. Please think about sharing your home with one of these beautiful souls, they are all very different personality wise, but they all deserve the love and comfort of a sweet life home. They give their all to us and its an honour to give our all back to them. Kent rescue dog becomes therapy pet after owner has stroke A rescue dog has found a new career as a therapy pet in Kent, after his owner suffered a stroke.

ooper, a six-year-old Greyhound, was adopted from Dogs Trust Canterbury in August 2017, when he was just 15 weeks old. His owner, 62-year-old Dean Richardson, a retired construction project director, suffered a stroke in November 2019. After his stroke, Dean underwent a period of rehab, where he had to re-learn how to walk and talk. While undergoing rehabilitation at West View Hospital in Tenterden, Ashford, Cooper would visit Dean. It was during these visits that Dean recognised the joy Cooper brought to others – and how much Cooper enjoyed visiting the hospital. Dean said: “My wife would bring Cooper into the rehab centre, and he was really very good. Everyone in the centre loved him, they thought he was fantastic. “When my wife didn’t bring him in, the volunteers, staff, and patients kept saying ‘Where’s Cooper?’ and ‘You haven’t brought him in?’ “Once I got a bit better, I thought it would be a nice idea to try and give back by getting Cooper trained up as a therapy dog.” Dean was able to get Cooper verified as a volunteer therapy dog via the charity Pets as Therapy (PATS). Now, Dean and Cooper visit hospitals, care homes, and dementia wards across Kent, interacting with people and spreading joy.

Dean added: “People absolutely adore Cooper, he’s a lovely dog, and it’s a nice way to give back to the NHS, because they helped me out at a time in my life when I really needed it. “I can’t tell you how good he is with people – he loves humans and humans love him.”

Birds’ access to natural resources for food are limited as a result of colder climates which means they may rely more frequently on the nutrients from our own backyards. During autumn,

routinely placing food and water out will make your garden more attractive. And doing it at least twice a day will ensure that any feathery visitors are well looked after. Keep hedgehogs in mind this ﬁrework season! The British Hedgehog Preservation Society (BHPS) has issued top tips on how best to reduce the risk of harming hedgehogs over the firework season

t is vital to remember wildlife at this time of year.

Fay Vass, Chief Executive of the Society said: “A bonfire pile looks like a 5* hotel to a hedgehog seeking a safe and cosy winter home to hibernate in. They aren’t to know we plan to set light to it! “Taking just a few extra minutes to check for wildlife really does make a difference and helps save the lives of hedgehogs, other wildlife and pets!”

BHPS has a three-step plan to help ensure the safety of hedgehogs on bonfire night:

1) MOVE the materials to clear ground on the day they’re to be lit 2) CHECK the pile carefully just before striking that match 3) OFFER an escape route by only lighting from one side – this gives anything hidden in the heap one final chance to escape. Fay added: “It’s vital that all three steps are carried out to give hedgehogs the best possible chance to escape the 44

danger of a lit bonfire.” Hedgehogs tend to hide in the centre and bottom two feet of the bonfire, which should be checked by gently lifting the bonfire section by section with a pole or broom. Never use a spade or fork as these can stab them. Using a torch will help to see any signs of life, and listen for a huffing sound, which is the noise hedgehogs make when disturbed.

If you do find a hedgehog in your unlit bonfire heap:

• Gather it up with as much of the nest as you can and place in a high-sided cardboard box with plenty of torn newspaper, towelling or straw. Ensure there are air holes in the lid and that the lid is secured firmly to the box, as hedgehogs are great climbers. • Wear gardening gloves or use an old towel to handle them so as not to get human smells on them and to keep them calm as hedgehogs are easily stressed; it also protects your hands from their spikes! • Put the box in a safe, quiet place such

In the context of the ongoing cost-ofliving crisis and lengthy waiting times for mental health treatment, the charities have launched a partnership designed to protect people’s wellbeing and pets’ welfare, with the ultimate aim of keeping people and their pets together. The Scottish SPCA has seen calls from people looking to give up pets triple during the cost-of living-crisis. For people experiencing mental health problems or difficulties with their finances, the fear of losing their animal companions will almost certainly add to their worries. The Animal Kindness Index, published in June 2023, revealed 88% of people in Scotland believe it has become more expensive to look after a pet. SAMH operates over 70 services across Scotland supporting people with their mental health and is well positioned to enhance the Society’s work in communities across the country. Through this new partnership, frontline colleagues from both organisations will be upskilled on how to identify animal welfare issues or mental health problems at an early stage, enabling help to be sought fast. The charities will also share resources so all colleagues are confident in signposting people to additional support, helping to keep pets and people together. This may involve directing people to mental health and wellbeing support, helping them access pet food banks, advising on vet care, or helping people to source pet behavioural support. Financial worries and behavioural issues are among the most common challenges pet owners are facing, and are additional stressors that 52

Steve Tufnell and Stan can contribute to or exacerbate mental health problems. SAMH and the Scottish SPCA will also work to raise awareness of the interconnections between human and animal welfare. Many of us feel the positive impact our pets have on our wellbeing. This is supported by multiple studies that have found pets can play a positive role in helping people manage long-term mental health conditions,[2] with some demonstrating that humananimal interaction increases our levels of oxytocin, a hormone that plays a key role in relieving stress and promoting social bonding[3]. Steve Tufnell, who has previously experienced thoughts of suicide and now attends SAMH initiative The Changing Room in Falkirk, said his 9-year-old cat, Stan, always helps lift his mood: “Stan always notices when you’re down. He’ll come up to you and roll over, looking for cuddles. And his purring has a positive impact on your mood. “When I was in that dark place, I came home after contemplating suicide, took one look at Stan’s face and thought ‘what have I almost done?’ Knowing what I know now, I just go and see Stan if I’m feeling low. “Any animal helps you relax. Animals

are never going to let you down – you can always just go and speak to them and play with them. And all they want back is to be fed and loved.” Billy Watson, Chief Executive of SAMH, said: “Our lives are full of challenges and in times of increased stress, which many people may be feeling during the current cost-of-living crisis, it can sometimes feel difficult to cope. But with the right support around us, the ups and downs of life can be more manageable. We would encourage anyone who may be feeling under pressure to reach out and seek support. “Through this collaboration with the Scottish SPCA, we will be better placed to help more people find the support they need, when they need it, and to give people and their pets the best chance of staying together.” Kirsteen Campbell, Scottish SPCA Chief Executive, said: “Our inspectors meet many people who, as well as needing support with their animals, are also struggling with their mental health. Although financial worries are not the only driver of poor mental health, the added pressure of the financial climate is exacerbating these underlying issues in many cases and leading to people and animals finding themselves in crisis. “However, pets can also often be a really positive influence in their owner’s lives and source of comfort during difficult times. This is just one of the reasons we believe no one should have to give up their pet because they are struggling financially. “Prevention is in our name and we believe any partnership that helps us tackle problems before an animal begins to suffer is vital. A Rose By Any Other Name Rose in quarantine, She will soon be joining some of our other Highlands

illside were in the news again earlier in the month courtesy of another celebrity animal, this time Rose the Highland cow. As featured in a local paper, a determined supporter of ours found poor Rose looking a little worse for wear in a field near a local mill. After a brief tussle with a local water company who owned the cow, and a grass roots social media campaign, Rose was soon on her way to our Sanctuary where she can bond with, and enjoy the company, of some our other Highland cows. If you’d like to support Rose and the many other Highlands who live in the Sanctuary, we’ve just made available some Highland cow-themed Christmas cards created by one of our favourite artists, Yvonne Garner. Or you may like to 'adopt' a herd of Hillside's Highlands headed by Scarlett and Sidney.

Year of Love Turns Big Pickles into Happy Ending In 2022 Hillside was called to rescue two abused mastiffs who’d been – literally – locked in a filthy garden shed. Confinement without regular access to food and water, no human contact, and no heating during the winter months had turned both dogs so savage that they could only be approached with a catchpole and protective gear (see below).

One of the mastiffs, later named Pickles, had to be hand-reared and rehabilitated intensively for the next 12 months. Staff here had resigned themselves to keeping her at the Sanctuary for the rest of her days because she’d been so abused, but a year on we’re proud to say Pickles has turned into one of our best dog rehoming success stories. Against all the odds when she arrived here, Pickles has found a loving home with her new human and has turned into a chipper, affectionate companion with a wonderful life to look forward to.
