My dog, Rascal. Keeps pulling on the lead whenever we leave the house, how can I train my dog to walk nicely? We accomplished lovely heel work at dog training classes when he was younger.
A.
Walking nicely on a lead involves your dog not pulling you around or lunging toward different triggers. This training is different to ‘heel work’. Provided there are no other behavioural problems you shouldn’t mind where your dog is walking, either in front, by your side or behind you, but not pulling, this is not competitive obedience training but life skills training! You haven’t mentioned what type of equipment you are using but I suggest you use a combination of head halter, like a Gentle Leader and a body harness, linked together by a double-ended lead. You need to practice holding and handling this equipment to be effective with your training. The objective is that you have more head control when needed and can walk loosely with just the body harness when you need less control. If you can turn the head without force then you can begin to retrain your dog, this is not jerking the head around to you either but giving your dog a reason to look at you. You will need to habituate your dog to wearing this before you start any training and it
If he is pulling home and does not want to go out, this could be a behavioural problem needs to fit properly, so check fitting instructions with the supplier. Avoid using choke chains as they cause considerable damage like laryngeal fractures, paralysis and retinal haemorrhages if used incorrectly and with force, they are difficult to use correctly for most people. The body harness should
not be used to slow down the pulling as most dogs will learn to pull ‘into this’ and pull even more! Correct fitting is needed with his body harness too, especially to avoid sores or rubs, especially if he has a thin coat. I am not sure what breed he his and we need to assess the pulling to determine your dog’s drive state. I am assuming your dog is pulling in the direction of an enjoyable walk and not pulling to get home again? Understanding the motivation and drive state for the pulling can also help when selecting the most appropriate training to help reduce this. In most cases stopping and walking backwards when your dog pulls is a good start, your dog needs to know that pulling only serves to delay his walk. When he is near to you, offer him a high value food reward. If he is pulling home and does not want to go out, this could be a behavioural problem and needs assessing. If this method doesn’t work there are other approaches, good luck with Rascal.
My Westie barks continuously when the doorbell is rung and I think he may bite a visitor as his behaviour seems to be getting worse, can I stop this?
A
If your little Westie has started to demonstrate territorial aggression, which sounds as though he may have, then yes, this can be reduced. Start by identifying all the triggers (in addition to the doorbell) that start his barking. When you have done so, you can retrain him by counterconditioning each of them, but this takes time. Counterconditioning is replacing one behavioural response with another, the trigger remains the same. Purchase a wireless doorbell (available from £10) do not fit this yet. Hide the button in your pocket and place the bell by your main entrance. Each time the new door bell is rung give him a valued food treat –

do not let him know that it is you that is ringing the bell, don’t get up to pretend to answer it yet, this can be added as your training develops. Build his training so he learns to run and wait in another room for his treat. Tape up your old doorbell and organise deliveries and post to be delivered elsewhere and out of sight. Block any views he may have of people passing or visiting and where possible keep the windows closed to lessen oncoming sounds of visitors. Putting on a radio can help block out external sounds too. Place a sign on your door that asks visitors to wait as you are training your dog, this way you may not feel under pressure to get to the door quickly! On some occasions, it has
Each time the new door bell is rung give him a valued food treat worked that the post is accompanied by a tasty biscuit as it is pushed through the door but take care that he doesn’t try to chew the post or the hand with the biscuit! Avoid him meeting and greeting people at any edge of your boundary or in the doorway as territorial drive states are higher at these points. This is a starting point for you, other training that may help you too!

CATCH UP EACH MONTH WITH OUR OFFICE DOG'S ANTICS!!! Slimy Slugs and Smelly Dog Tales Happy Days Dear Friends! Autumn is here and the sky is blue as I put paws to my rather innovative adapted keyboard, the first thing that comes to mind is my walk with Mistress earlier today. All was going terribly well with me chasing my ball around the field and Mistress doing some weird arm exercises for her bat wings, when she thought no one could see her. Anyway I stopped for my usual ‘number two’s, admittedly a little spread around but perfectly formed! Mistress whipped out a doggy poo bag to pick it all up. As she was doing so and muttering about how can a dog do so many when she picked up the last one and screamed. She threw the bag in the air losing all the contents! ‘I just picked up a huge slimy Slug and I touched it!’. I fell about laughing but she didn’t. Out with another bag and all the spread out plops were all found – devoid the slug of course who was likely in shock! Good old Postie knocked on the door the other day and a box arrived for me! A big thank you to Natural Instinct who very kindly sent me a rather yummy looking
Slimy slug
Do you know how many kettles of hot water we need to fill our bath half way? 35!!!!! We can’t wait until our heating system is repaired and I for one always like to smell good just in case I run into a handsome Dog in the fields! I am 7 years old and still single. Perhaps they should make a dating site for Dogs? Plenty of ‘Furries’ would be a good name! The other night I frightened the living day -lights out of Mistress. She wasn’t aware that she was talking away in her sleep and making very odd noises. So I jumped on her bed and decided to put my nose to her mouth to check all was ok and just then she woke up with a little scream! Sorry Mum. However she said it was very sweet of me. Well my lovely furry and feathered friends, that’s all for this month! Keep Safe!

selection of Raw Pet Food plus some Fish Finger Snacks! The food arrived frozen and ready for the freezer but mum defrosted the Natural Chicken pack so I waited patiently to get my dinner. Mistress said a gradual transition is recommended so we will follow Natural Instinct’s feeding instructions over 7 – 10 days to avoid any unnecessary tummy upsets. Well, let me tell you – it tasted so good! And I will be making my way through The Pure Offal, The Natural Senior Chicken and vegetables, Natural Tripe and Turkey, not forgetting my Fish Finger Treats! Take a look at their website to discover more about Natural Instinct and their products. It’s a great site! www.naturalinstinct.com It is near that awful time of year for us pets. Yes, Fireworks!!! Horrid things and so very frightening. There are some Tips in this issue to help you keep your furry friend as calm as possible. It’s not just Halloween or Bonfire Night that humans set off fireworks for their entertainment. It wouldn’t be quite so bad if those were the only days. Ruff Rant over! We have been very cold in our house. Our boiler had been condemned and we have no hot water or heat! We share boiling up the kettle for our baths and snuggle under furry rugs together in the evenings.

News ... TheraPaws Supports World Alzheimer’s Month
T
his year, Mayhew’s animal therapy programme, TheraPaws, which visits care homes, hospices, day centres and hospitals to engage and interact with older people across London, is marking the 6th global World Alzheimer’s Month with visits from our gorgeous TheraPaws dogs. World Alzheimer’s Month is an international campaign that happens every September, trying to raise awareness and challenge the stigma that surrounds dementia. TheraPaws recognises the mutual benefits of animals engaging with people, particularly those with dementia, by helping to reduce stress, anxiety, social isolation and unlocking memories and emotions. It also helps to improve the relationships between humans and dogs. At present, TheraPaws visits over 40 different venues across 11 boroughs in London including
Kensington and Chelsea, Brent, Haringey, and Westminster. And with over 50 teams of humans and dogs devoting their time to the scheme, we are determined to make a difference and improve the lives of many people. This week (September 11th), one of our TheraPaws volunteers, Aurélie, with her Instagram famous dog, Marcel Le Corgi, visited University Hospital Lewisham to raise awareness of World Alzheimer’s Month and spend time with patients there. When they arrived at the hospital all attention gravitated towards our TheraPaws team and Marcel was quickly lavished with praise, cuddles and tons of love from a variety of different people they met. TheraPaws volunteers can see the benefits and how worthwhile it is taking their dogs on these visits, having witnessed first-hand the positive impact that it has on the
patients and residents from the way they become more alert to the smile that spreads across their faces when they enter a room. It gives patients and residents something to look forward to, encourages them out of their beds and sparks conversation, which can lead to unlocking memories and emotions. Ginnie Adamson, Dementia Specialist Nurse at University Hospital Lewisham, said: “Mayhew’s TheraPaws programme is a brilliant initiative and a great way for us to raise awareness of World Alzheimer’s Month.” “Animals have such a positive impact on many of the patients. As well as being a welcome distraction, dogs have the ability to lower anxiety and stress levels and instantly improve your mood.” Luke Berman, TheraPaws Project Manager, added: “It was a fantastic day and Aurélie and Marcel really enjoyed meeting and interacting
TheraPaws volunteer Aurélie with her dog Marcel and a patient with so many patients and staff members.” “Our TheraPaws programme is a great way to raise awareness of dementia. As well as enhancing people’s lives by helping to reduce social isolation, stress, and unlocking memories and emotions, the initiative also helps animals by raising awareness of the positive effects dogs can have, including promoting respect and compassion towards animals.” n To find out more about TheraPaws, then please visit our website or call 020 8962 8004. BACK TO SCHOOL WITH BITE-SIZED TRAINING It’s back to school time and Fish4Dogs is helping pet parents boost their training knowledge with a series of bite-sized training exercises for puppies and young dogs. Dog trainer Tima Lund uses positive-based clicker training to reinforce a puppy’s directed behaviour and reward it with treats. The first of the series, which can be seen on Fish4Dogs’ social media channels, Tima shows how to encourage a puppy to stay on a given spot. She uses a board which she places in the middle of a mat to train Karma a four-and-a half month cocker spaniel. Tima ignores unwanted behaviour
Dog trainer Tima Lund and stares at the board until the puppy focuses her attention on it. The progress is incremental - when the dog begins to pay attention to the object she clicks and rewards. The pup quickly learns that the

board is pivotal to the game and progresses to touching and putting her feet on the board and eventually, standing on it with all four paws. “The game we play is called ‘what makes mummy click’. All my puppies are clicker trained – they know that they have to keep trying to find out what makes me click. The click is a promise, as soon as I click, food is given,” says Tima. In the video, she uses Fish4Dogs Salmon Mouse, mixed with egg and potato or rice flour, which is baked to produce small moist treats which can be consumed by the puppy quickly during the training session. Dogmatic T
hey are delighted to have been able to help so many people enjoy walking their dogs and they would like to say a huge thank you to the many Customers who have supported them over the years, culminating in being voted ‘Product I can’t live without’ for the fourth time! The Dogmatic ranges offer control but are gentle looking with fun, friendly designs so that any dog will still look approachable and the Dogmatic cannot, therefore, be confused with a muzzle. They have fresh, vibrant, exciting designs and colours to match and enhance all owners’ requirements. The Dogmatic is recommended by Vets, Trainers, Behaviourists, Rescues etc., Their success is proven by an extensive list of clients and canine experts who endorse and use Dogmatic’s range. They are very proud of this.
How did Dogmatic come to be? The short answer is ‘Necessity is the Mother of Invention’! Zoe Lewsley Managing Director explains ‘’It is difficult to know where to start as it is something that has evolved completely by chance and out of necessity rather than some grand scheme. Dogmatic was the design of my lovely mother Susan Lewsley. She has experienced back/leg and neck pain for 28 years due to disc/nerve problems and arthritis resulting in seven major back operations and one major neck operation plus arthritis in her hands. This meant she could no longer walk or even hold our dogs let alone be involved in showing them. We had Dobermanns for 26 years (including Tommy, Top Dobermann in the UK 2000) and enjoyed showing same. We were using the known makes of Headcollars but found, not only did they not stop them pulling, they were all rubbing and riding up into our dogs’ eyes and they had even managed to get them off. We found neither the Headcollars or harnesses were taking the strength or weight of

the dogs and, in fact, the dogs were putting their weight against the harnesses thus making them even harder to hold on to with some makes rubbing them raw! Mum’s problems were being aggravated by trying to cope with our three Dobermanns and walking, showing or even holding them was no longer viable. Rather than give up, she decided to experiment with a Headcollar that would work by turning the dog’s head in a kindly manner which would ensure the body would have to follow, yet was comfortable to wear and would stop your dog pulling and lunging. We had a local saddler help with prototypes/samples etc., Many ideas/styles were tried and tested until we were happy with the finished product. The Headcollar evolved into the present design and the finished product not only is comfy but does not ride up or go near the dog’s eyes. It works on all breeds/sizes of dog and ensures your dog will immediately follow where you want to lead. An extra bonus is that, in an emergency, the Dogmatic can be used to close the dog’s mouth and turn its head to enable the owner to keep their dog safe but immediately releases again allowing the dog to pant, drink, carry a toy etc., It is very comfortable for the dog to wear and offers complete control for the owner. We have even been able to help other disabled owners with their dogs and also dogs in rescue who were previously untrainable and, therefore, unable to be rehomed. We had three black leather Headcollars with brass fittings made for our dogs and this meant Mum and I could now walk the dogs together and she could hold them when I was in the ring etc., This was a major lifestyle change. The name Dogmatic and the strapline (Automatically Leading the Way) literally came to Mum in the middle of the night and she jotted them down on a pad by the side of the bed together with a few less desirable ones before going back to sleep! We started using the Headcollars on our dogs and were astounded at peoples’ response. We literally kept

OF THEIR We realised we would have to learn CUSTOMER’S about sizings and how to fit all the COMMENTS different breeds. Neither of us are natural sales people or over-confident by nature so it was interesting to have ‘Wow, I thought to approach people to ask if we could someone had replaced measure their dogs and trial our sizing our Pointer with a samples on as many breeds and Chihuahua, I had to cross-breeds as possible. Fortunately, keep checking he was most dog owners are a very friendly lot still attached to the and everybody was very helpful and lead! A totally different eager for their dogs to be included in walking experience, the research! thanks Dogmatic.’ We were having them made individually at the Saddlery to begin with and then as word of mouth spread we found a small Independent Leather Manufacturer in Birmingham. ‘Health warning: They were so helpful and allowed us to Taking your dog (s) for order in small quantities. They also a walk, with a helped with leads Mum designed, in Dogmatic Headcollar, particular specialised non-slip leads for the first time, can which give you much more grip on the result in a state of lead – again designed through our own need which is a whole different shock and disbelief!! story! Walking your dog I was still working at Reading suddenly becomes a University as Post Graduate pleasure and you will Admissions Co-Ordinator – I have want to go more worked as Customer Services walkies than Manager and in Admin Officer roles, ever before!!!’ whilst Mum is a fully qualified Secretary/PA - and I was fulfilling orders part-time. We were on a huge learning curve and had to get advice/help very quickly. Mum was in and out of hospital and I realised I cont. on page 14

would have to go part-time at work if we were to take a gamble and ‘go for it’ on a small budget and a prayer! Our name started to grow through small adverts and ‘word of mouth’. We needed to expand and found a larger Equestrian Leather Manufacturer, organised packaging, labelling, printing etc., and gradually we grew to such a degree I had to go full time in 2001. We have slowly built up Dogmatic and the Headcollar, collars and leads are now in Shops, Vets, on Trade Stands, being used by Police, Prison Officers, Rescues, Behaviourists, Trainers, Clubs etc., as well as individual dog owners. We try to help small Businesses, Clubs, Rescues etc., by offering low minimum orders at trade prices so any profits can go back into them. It is also endorsed by famous dog Behaviourist Dr David Sands and recommended as his Headcollar of choice in his books. Over the years we lost our Dobermanns but had fallen in love with the Italian Spinone and had Kofi who became our new mascot and model for the Dogmatic.
We have gone on learning and expanding and we now also have a range of Headcollars, Collars and leads in Padded Cushioned Webbing which are vibrant in different colours. We have a specialised Training range in top quality lined leather available in black or brown with brass fittings. We have designed our own packaging and branding and it is amazing to see the boys’ photos on the packaging on the stands at the Shows and Crufts etc ...! We have lost our wonderful boy, Kofi, at the age of 12 years and his son Archie just short of 11 years but still have Archie’s son Norman who has just turned 10. We are due to have a new puppy who is related to our boys and will be company for Norman. We are supplying a rapidly growing number of Shops, Vets, Training Schools, Behaviourists, Groomers etc., and the more we can get the Dogmatic out there for the general public to see and try on their dogs, the easier their dog walking will be! As you can see we have a large amount of customer feedback – where the Dogmatic has literally changed their lives and meant they can walk their dogs without
The Boys
having their arms pulled out of their sockets! We have a Facebook page and Twitter Account and a large number of photos and videos from satisfied dog owners. We still have to pinch ourselves to believe how far we have come since Mum designed a Headcollar which has been voted Top Headcollar after a six month trial of six makes of Headcollar by Your Dog Magazine, Highly Commended accolade within ‘Product I can’t Live Without’ category of Your Dog’s Pet Product Awards and voted Tester’s Choice of Headcollar 2011. We have won ‘Product I can’t Live Without’ in the 2015/16 Your Dog Magazine’s Pet Product Awards. To see different
breeds walking around the shows and street wearing our Products and hearing people discussing how good they are has been amazing. We have even seen the Dogmatic on several TV programmes! I run the day to day business with the help of a small team of dog lovers and it is great to speak to so many dog people from all over the World and hear how much the Headcollar has helped them. Whilst I am keeping up to date, Mum can rest when necessary but continue designing and she has several ideas she is working on. Learning about book-keeping, sales, tax etc., is not such fun and we will never be natural sales people, but that’s no bad thing! It has been an amazing journey which has been a learning curve, but we could never have imagined how an idea could have changed our lifestyle in such a way! But the fact we are able to work and have Norman with us more than makes up for any negative aspects. The Norman loves being with us and it is a joy to watch him playing or sitting at our feet in the office. n Visit www.dogmatic.org.uk and find out what all the fuss is about!
News ... Best-selling author raises more than £1,000 for hen charity A popular author has saved the lives of hundreds of hens due for slaughter by raising more than £1,000 for the British Hen Welfare Trust. Victoria Connelly donated royalties from three of her books, all of which feature her own ex-bats, over a three-month period raising £1,142.86. The money will be put towards the charity’s re-homing work, which sees it save 50,000 hens from slaughter every year. Victoria has been a longstanding
supporter of the charity ever since she adopted her own hens back in 2011 before moving to Suffolk from the London suburbs. Her books, Escape to Mulberry Cottage, A Year at Mulberry Cottage and Summer at Mulberry Cottage, all feature her beloved hens and it was these three books from which she donated royalties to the charity. Victoria said: “We have had so much joy from our ex-battery hens via the BHWT and we truly can't imagine
life without them. They are very special animals and I love spreading the word about the amazing work the charity does on their behalf. I’m really delighted to be able to help.” If you’d like to re-home your own ex-bats simply register your details online at www.bhwt.org.uk and then call 01884 860084 to confirm your booking. The BHWT holds regular re-homings all over the country.

Happy Rescue Tails from some of Our Favourite Charities Pine Ridge
60TH Anniversary for Pine Ridge! Pine Ridge Dog Sanctuary has been saving stray and unwanted dogs since 1958. It was started by the late Bernard Cuff. He came home from business and switched on the T.V to learn that Slough was the first town in England to introduce a new Bye Law banning un-leashed dog’s from the roads.
A
ny dog that was found not to be with an owner was picked up by newly appointed Dog Wardens and impounded for seven days. If not claimed and collected by their owner they were put to sleep. Bernard was outraged at hearing this, being an owner of German Shepherds himself decided the dogs had to be saved. He
16
contacted the authorities and it was agreed he could collect the dogs after the seven day period and had to pay for each dog for the number of days they were in the pound. It soon snowballed and he was being contacted from all over neighbouring counties to take the dogs. Throughout the 60’s and 70’s there were over 300 dogs and puppies in the Sanctuary with 70/80% being un-homeable for various issues. Bernard would not have any dog put to sleep unless absolutely necessary therefore they lived their lives out at Pine Ridge, no time limit is ever placed on the dogs they are kept for however long it takes to find them the right home.
28 SEPTEMBER – 28 OCTOBER 2017 RESCUE A PET
There were so many dogs in those days because people did not have their dogs spayed or neutered and were allowed to roam freely hence many litters of puppies were produced. It was decided in the early 80’s that Pine Ridge could not continue to accept aggressive un-homeable dogs so gradually the numbers dropped. Also when the dogs were rehomed they were spayed and neutered so Pine Ridge was not putting dogs back in homes where they may be allowed to have a litter, not that Pine ridge would wittingly let a dog go to a home if they wanted to breed. In 1992 Pine Ridge was asked if they could help with stray dogs from Wales where again very few owners bothered to have their bitch spayed and dogs were allowed to roam producing litters every six months consequently the pounds were over flowing. After talks with the Caerphilly Council and Dog Warden, Pine Ridge started to collect the dogs on a weekly basis. They had to hire a long wheel base transit van to accommodate all the dogs and puppies as well as bitches in whelp. The dogs very often were in poor condition thin, dirty and matted and stunk the van out. The first job when they reached Pine Ridge was a soothing warm bath probably the first time in their lives. Connie decided with Sandra the Dog Warden whom many of their supporters have met, that if she picked up puppies from an owner the bitch had to be spayed which
Pine Ridge pay for. All the stray dogs were given the first part vaccination and wormed when they were picked up as Parvo Virus was rife in the 90’s and Connie did not want to run the risk of it being brought into the Sanctuary. Pine Ridge introduced a neutering scheme with numbers of the Vets in Wales in 1992 that has made a significant difference with fewer puppies being produced year on year resulting in fewer unwanted dogs. Sandra holds several consultations at various locations providing the less well off with a neutering/spaying voucher and although she has recently retired continues to do this on behalf of Pine Ridge and the families are keeping their dogs. Pine Ridge also helps like-minded organisations with the cost of neutering in other parts of the country. It is the kindest and most effective way to keep the population of unwanted dogs down avoiding unnecessary destruction. All of this is only possible through the generosity of Pine Ridge Dog Sanctuary’s loyal supporters The Charity hold two functions a year. An open day and fun dog show during August. Newsletters are sent out twice a year keeping their supporters up to date. If anyone would like to receive a copy just let them know and they will be happy to include you on their mailing list. n For more information call 01344 882689 or visit www.pineridgedogsanctuary.org.uk www.rescueapet.co.uk

Mayhew
Simba after being rescued
Starving Kitten Found Abandoned on the Streets A tiny starving kitten, who was found abandoned on the streets all by himself, has now found his happily ever after.
T
he five-week-old brave, tabby kitten, named Simba by Mayhew staff, was discovered by a member of the public after they spotted the cute feline roaming the streets in Wembley, North West London. Mayhew’s Animal Welfare Officer, AJ Ford, said: “Luckily we had been in the Wembley area, when the member of public spotted our animal ambulance and immediately came over and told us they had found a kitten wandering the streets.” “We don’t know how long poor Simba had been on the streets fending for himself, but he was extremely hungry. We immediately fed him in the ambulance and he quickly lapped it all up. He was so
friendly and tame.” “At Mayhew we are dedicated to helping people in crisis situations. We are here to assist and advice on the best course of action for the animal, no matter what the problem is.” Our Animal Welfare Officers immediately took Simba back to Mayhew, so our Vet Team could check him over and make sure he was in good health. After being de-wormed and de-fleaed, Simba was put on foster care with one of our experienced foster carers and was soon growing in confidence and showing off his playful and affectionate character. AJ added: “We are in the midst of kitten season and bringing in more
and more unwanted kittens every day. Simba’s story highlights how important it is to get your pet neutered. At Mayhew we offer low cost and affordable neutering for cats and dogs at our Vet Clinic. We offer free neutering for bull breed dogs and for cats under the C4 scheme.” “We also run a Pick and Snip initiative, which offers free neutering for cats and kittens for some owners who have been unable to neuter their cat or kitten due to cost, disability, apathy or transport availability.” As soon as Simba was vaccinated and neutered, he was ready for adoption and quickly found a new forever home, along with another Mayhew cat called Lady Bella who

was discovered in a bin by bin men after they noticed the bag moving. Our Animal Welfare Officers are bringing in more and more furry felines every day and we urgently need more kitten food. Please help by either buying wet kitten food from our Amazon Wishlist https://www.amazon.co.uk/reg istry/wishlist/HM48FAT7VDW2 - or drop off any that you have spare. Anything you could donate will help us to continue to care for these kittens throughout kitten season. n If you are interested in adopting any of our cats, please visit our website www.themayhew.org or call 020 8962 8009.
You can find out more about our Animal Welfare Officers work on our website and please consider a donation to help them help more cats and kittens like Simba. Alternatively, you can make an instant donation by texting “CATS27 £5” or your chosen amount up to £10 to 70070. www.rescueapet.co.uk

Blue Cross
Dougie, Sam Adams, Hannah and Steve Jones
Blue Cross TV ponies flourish in their new homes
D
ougie and Puffin the irresistibly cute Blue Cross pony stars of Channel 4’s Animal Rescue Live this summer are now flourishing in their new homes. Dougie, who was a favourite with presenter Steve Jones, is now turning his hoof to show jumping with the Adams family in Staffordshire. Meanwhile little Puffin is in pony paradise with the Mansell family in Buckinghamshire. The Adams family gave Dougie a home after meeting him at Blue Cross in Rolleston five years ago. His future had looked bleak initially because of the severe starvation he had suffered as a foal, which had left him with neurological and coordination problems. But, specialist staff at the charity spent months of dedicated care to get him back on his hooves and ready to find a loving family. Already caring for another Blue Cross pony Samantha Adams and her daughter Hannah felt that they 18
could give Dougie the love, care and companionship that he’d been lacking. Dougie was chosen to feature on Animal Rescue Live as an example of what an abandoned pony with little hope can turn into thanks to the work of dedicated charity staff. Channel 4 spent an entire day with the family and Dougie behaved immaculately throughout, much to Samantha and Hannah’s pride. Samantha recalls: “Dougie has amazed us all. With love and attention he has gone from strength to strength. We began to ride him last year and he’s turned into a little star! He’s already won lots of dressage competitions and is now showing a talent for jumping!” Little Puffin also featured on the show during the summer and is now happily ensconced in her new home with pony-mad Emily Mansell and her family in Buckinghamshire. The pretty seven-year-old mare took a long

time to learn to trust humans again, having suffered some of the most shockingly cruel treatment the Blue Cross has ever known. She wowed the Animal Rescue team when she was filmed for the show and Emily, who had first met Puffin at Blue Cross Burford the previous week, was even more smitten when she saw the cute pony on the big screen. Emily’s mother Jane Mansell said: “Puffin travelled well and quickly settled in with our retired New Forest pony Maisy. Because we are lucky enough to keep Puffin at home she continuously sees us and her confidence is growing every day. She happily comes over for her token feed every morning and we are continuing with her clicker training, which Blue Cross showed us, and it’s working really well. She can still be a little nervous but she has improved so much. I am sure this is because of how she was handled at Blue Cross and also
because she knows how much we love her.” Ann Bisset, Blue Cross Horse Groom said: “Dougie’s transition into an all round riding pony is unbelievable and seeing Puffin’s journey from a scared, traumatised pony to the happy, confident girl she is today is wonderful. I couldn’t be happier to see what fantastic, loving homes they now have. The days of cruelty and sadness couldn’t be further behind them now and that is all we hope for, for all our horses.” n National pet charity, Blue Cross has two specialist horse rehoming centres at Burford and Rolleston and 11 Centres nationwide. Labrador Lifeline
Morse’s Story Some of you may remember me as a 63 kilo Lab named Danny, but boy has my life changed in a big way now. Let me tell you all about it – it’s been a year..
F
irstly, my name is now Morse – which I do prefer as it seems more “macho”! remember being brought from a house and taken into kennels, where I stayed for quite some time. I was assessed by a vet and treated for my bad skin. I could barely walk and I weighed an incredibly uncomfortable 63 kilos. In May 2016, I was taken into foster with a lady I now call Auntie Ros – who I love, along with her chocolate Lab – Daisy. I was put on Burns Weight Control and fed carrots as snacks. I was taken out every day to the woods and sometimes to swim in the lido. It was all new to me, but I loved it. They tell me that I was losing weight at last and I was starting to have so much more energy. One day, Ros took me to visit a lovely lady in a different house. It had everything I needed including a bed in the lounge which I immediately tried to get in. But my size was still a problem and I couldn’t fit in it, so I sat in it instead. Then I noticed a duvet set up in the kitchen – it was almost as though I had been expected! The lady kept on saying how lovely I was, and we visited her house a few times and then, one Sunday, Auntie Ros put me in the car and told me that we were going to go to what she was calling my “Forever Home”. I was very excited and I even wore a blue bow on my collar. I was very happy to see the same lady in the house that I was already familiar with. She seemed especially happy to see me too. I spent the day wandering around the house and exploring the garden, until it was supper time. I was concerned that I could still see the bottom of the bowl and I looked for more, but my new Mum said, “No. I’ve been told exactly how much to give you and that’s it.” Even though I gave her my most appealing look, wagged my www.rescueapet.co.uk
tail and put my paw up, she wouldn’t give in. The following day, after a long walk, I was taken to the vet to be weighed and for the next two months it was a regular occurrence. I was continuing to lose weight and I got down to 40 kilos. I was feeling so much better and was enjoying life to the full. Then one day after a soggy walk, Mum was drying me and she became concerned about a lump on my tummy. She wasted no time and took me immediately to see Uncle Andrew, our vet. He suggested that the lump be taken out and sent for testing, which he did on the following day. The results were available a few days later and we went back to see Andrew, who was very unhappy. He told us that it was a mast cell tumour – which meant nothing to me, but Mum burst into tears and hugged me close to her. Following this news, we began to take long car journeys to Newmarket Animal Hospital to be seen by other vets. The vets decided that I needed further surgery on my tummy and I also needed to lose two of my appendages – which was a shame as I was quite proud of them and I hadn’t been able to see them for years prior to me losing the weight. But they had found another tumour there, so they had to go. I had my operation and all healed well. But I then had to have something called chemotherapy.. But before I could, they needed to make sure that my skin was completely healthy, as I had an ongoing condition. This involved me having to be bathed every couple of days in a special shampoo. This was a two-man job due to my size and it was decided that it must take place in the back garden using a paddling pool. These baths ended up being quite entertaining, well for me at least. all. They even put a rubber duck in the pool!
MORSE’s HAPPY EVER AFTER
I have since been having hydrotherapy and physiotherapy to build up the wasted muscles in my back legs, which had become quite weak due to me carrying so much body weight for so many years. Earlier this year I went back to Newmarket for another scan which showed that I was tumour free. This made Mum and Ros very happy and they made a huge fuss of me. To help me and Mum to recover from the stress and worry which we experienced during my illness, we have had lots of holidays, fresh air and exercise. Well, that’s my story so far, but what I really want to say is a huge “THANK YOU” to the LabradorLifeline Trust for saving my life twice over. Mum and I are so grateful to have each other. We live together very happily and we make each other’s worlds complete. Bye for now, lots of licks Morse x
n For more information on The Labrador Lifeline Trust visit www.labrador-lifeline.com
When Morse was rescued it took two strong men to lift him out of the house wrapped in a blanket as he could hardly walk. He actually broke the scales when he got to Lone Valley Kennels! He had lived with a person who went out to work leaving him for over 12 hours every day. We were told that he had two walks per day however there was no way this boy had ever been walked - he simply could not do it. After much persuasion by the owners family she decided the time had come to let him go. We asked what he was fed on and were told ‘two large jumbones per day, plus steak mince and scraps’. So very sad that this dog has spent most of his life on his own with only food for company!. However after a lot of hard work by all concerned at least he has the life he so deserves now and we are delighted that his chemo has worked. We wish him a long and happy life with his new Mum.

She is content to go for little potters around on a walk and likes to bounce after a ball too.
Gypsy has a real love for water and dives head first into our paddling pools, so hopefully her new owners will supply her one of her own!

Four charities to benefit from Agria’s pedal power! It’s that time of year again – time for Agria’s cycling team to do their final few fitness sessions ready to tackle the very tough 500-mile Extra Mile Challenge! Agria is renowned for taking part in some extremely testing events in the name of charity, and the Extra Mile Challenge is no exception. This September, Brittany hosts the 3-day route designed to challenge cyclists working in relay teams of four. Four Agria teams will join another 39 teams taking part in 2017’s Brittany Challenge, with Team Agria riding to raise money for: • Dogs for Good in Association with Stocklake Park School (MASKS) – supported by Agria 1, team leader, Agria’s MD Simon Wheeler • Hearing Dogs for Deaf People – supported by Why did I Agria to this?, team leader, John Walker-Lee, Agria’s Head of Underwriting • Medical Detection Dogs – supported by Agria Coasters, team leader, Lorraine Tannatt Nash, Head
of Rehoming and Charity Channel • Pets as Therapy – supported by Agria there yet?, team leader, Helen Moore, Claims Manager for Agria. With such a distance to ride, including total elevations of over 26,000 feet over the three days, the cyclists will be pedalling hard to raise as much money as possible. Lorraine Tannatt Nash, team leader and seven-time Extra Mile Challenge veteran, says, “Taking part in the challenge is very important to Agria as, while it’s exhausting and extremely tough, we are so proud to have the chance to raise money for some truly exceptional, life-changing charities.” Follow the ups and downs of Team Agria’s Extra Mile Challenge on Facebook at www.facebook.com/Team-AgriasCharity-Challenges723203504361787. Pet Health Tips for the Autumn
New seasons bring new health risks and autumn is no exception. Ticks and fleas are still active and dogs and cats would not know a death cap from a field mushroom. Ticks & Fleas Ticks are prevalent in leaf mold as well as long grass and bracken and they can infect your pet with disease. In the UK, there are three common tick bormme diseases: Lyme Disease which cause lameness, fever and lethargy. Babesiosis causes chronic anaemia that can result in heart failure. Ehrlichiosis cause fever, lethargy, loss of appetite, meningitis and seizures. Tick borne diseases are potentially fatal if left untreated so a visit to the vet and a course of strong antibiotics are essential. In centrally heated homes, fleas are active throughout autumn and winter so routine spot on treatments or tick and flea collars are still recommended. There are a

large number of options on the market. If you are in any doubt, ask your vet to recommend the correct preventatives for your pet. Rat Poison and Herbicides Rats and mice frequently come into the house when the weather gets cold. Rat poisons are toxic to pets as well as rats so their use as aa method of control is not recommended to pet owners. Anti-freeze Most anti-freeze contains ethylene glycol which has a sweat appealing

odour so pets are inclined to lick it. One to two teaspoons are sufficient to kill your cat or dog! Choose an alternative to ethylene glycol if the weather turns cold. The Effect of Cold Pets tend to require a little more feed during cold weather. However, it is important to keep on exercising them regularly come rain or shine. Dogs with arthritis are especially vulnerable during cold, wet weather but daily doses of cod liver oil and glucosamine can help to ease the
symptoms. A warm pet coat and even pet boots should be considered for the arthritic pet so that they can continue to exercise and not stiffen up. Lastly, when the central heating is turned on, you AND your pet are vulnerable to dustmite allergies. Routine washi of bedding in Bio-Life FabriCleanse and a monthly spray of pet beds and all soft furnishings can help you maintain a dustmite free home. n For further information, help or advice, please do not hesitate to contact Bio-Life on telephone number 01608 686626 (Open 8am to 8pm, 7 days per week) or visit www.biolife-international.co.uk

Simon Bailey
Q. A.
Q. A.
I have a new rabbit and have been warned about ‘Fly Strike’. What is fly Strike?
Fly strike occurs when flies are attracted to the rabbit and lay eggs on the rabbits coat. These then develop into maggots which then cause severe injury to the surrounding skin by direct trauma to the skin and, if severe enough secondary infections and shock. Fly strike can be fatal. The flies are attracted to urine and faeces on the coat of the rabbit or if there are wounds or injury. Therefore the rabbit should be checked twice daily to assess for injury or evidence of ‘matter’ on the hair of the rear end. It can develop in a matter of hours and so it is important to check regularly. If you suspect or see fly strike take your rabbit to the vet immediately as the longer it is left the more severe it will become. To prevent this condition try and reduce flies in the environment of the rabbits, and also a number of products are available which is applied to the rabbit’s coat which prevents the development of the fly eggs to maggots, and as such should almost completely stop the chance of fly strike.
My cat is hyperthyroid and on tablets, but I am struggling to give them to him. Is there any other way? Generally most cats take the tablets very well because the condition causes them to have a very good appetite, but for those who don’t there are other alternatives. The condition is generally caused by an over-activity from the thyroid gland. Therefore surgical removal of the affected gland will remove this over-activity and generally results in the signs resolving and the cat not having to be given tablets. I would suggest talking this over with your vet to see if this is appropriate for your cat or not. There is also the option of radiation treatment but this is a specialist treatment and has certain requirements which again your vet can discuss with you. It may also be possible to use diet to help with this condition.
With fireworks season fast approaching, and the time for fireworks being much longer than simply November 5th, amongst all the fuss and frolics care must be taken to ensure our pets are safe and sound. Veterinary surgeries throughout the UK see an increasing number of pets requiring medications to calm them during this stressful time and for injuries resulting from fireworks. Because animals have such an acute sense of hearing, loud bangs and whistles are not just frightening but can even be painful to their ears. Therefore the general advice below can help to keep your pets stress free and safe during fireworks. • Always keep dogs and cats inside when fireworks are being let off. • Keep doors and windows locked to prevent pets escaping and to keep any noise to a minimum. • Drawing curtains and putting the TV/radio on –can help to drown out the unfamiliar noise of fireworks. • Never take your dog to a firework display. • Always make sure your pet is wearing some form of identification so that if they run away they can easily be returned to you. • Rabbits/guinea pigs/birds etc should be brought inside to a quiet room or to a garage/shed, and their hutches or aviaries covered with blankets to block out some noise and bright lights, but ensure there is adequate ventilation. • There are some very good herbal and natural remedies which can be useful to reduce the stress and anxiety caused. In addition there are a variety of treatments available for this stressful period that can be helpful, and it is worth talking to your vet about these for both this year and future events. In addition it may be worth considering behaviour management well in advance to try and reduce the unwanted stress and behaviour. This however will require preparation, planning and time, as often it is a long process. It may be worth speaking to your vet for their advice and possibly referring you to a canine behaviourist.

A SURVIVAL GUIDE TO BONFIRE NIGHT
Keeping your pet Calm during Firework Season Bonfire Night may be loved by many of us humans, but you can never stress enough each year how scary it is for animals. The sound of a nearby firework going bang must be as surprising to our pets as if someone crept up on us with a bucket of cold water. Imagine how we would jump up in surprise in shock. Imagine that happening thirty of forty times in one night! Awful.
W
ith some pets, it is easy enough to ensure that the evening goes by relatively unnoticed. Dogs can be kept in and occupied with a bone or a few treats with the curtains closed and the telly on. Pets that live outside in a hutch, such as rabbits or guinea pigs, could be brought into the house or an outbuilding and settled into a large airy comfy box for a few hours, again with some distracting nibbles. Cats are harder, unless they are the type that comes in quite happily and you can provide a litter tray and encourage them to stay in. A cosy lap or a ball of wool and a game may help. If you can get your cat to stay in, then you’d be well advised to do so. Again, close the curtains and perhaps pop the telly on. Pay particular attention to ‘roaming’ pets such as cats if there is a bonfire planned near you and if you are worried, ask the organisers or neighbour to make sure that the bonfire does not harbour any dozing pets before it is lit. Horses and equines should be
considered if their grazing is urban or near somewhere with a display planned. (Though it’s unlikely any responsible organiser would plan a big event near grazing or not clear it with landowners.) If you have stables, put your horse away as normal and perhaps shut the top door. If they horse is young or easily spooked, consider staying at the stables for the night to handle any panic though take care not to put yourself in danger, for example between the wall and a very nervy horse. A reassuring pat over the door plus a juicy carrot or two may help. Your should consider wildlife in general. If you are having a bonfire yourself, then make sure that there are no dozing hedgehogs in the fire before it is lit (you could put some mesh around the bottom to stop them getting in while it is lit) and make sure your bonfire cannot ruin any habitat such as trees or hedges. And if you are having firework night fun, be considerate to those around you. A word to neighbours with pets will give them warning so they can get Tiddles in before the fun starts. Or if you live in a place with numer-
ous pets around you, including your own, consider a quieter evening that’s just as much fun – sparklers for the smaller children, traditional
games such as apple bobbing for the older ones and adults, and a tasty barbecue instead of a bonfire. Enjoy bangers of a different type this year.

Both pets and their owners suffer anxiety during the firework season
It is well known how much pets suffer from anxiety during the firework season, however their owners often get overlooked. With this in mind, a survey1 by Ceva Animal Health, manufacturer of ADAPTIL® and FELIWAY®, has revealed that nearly 65 per cent of owners are anxious about their pet while fireworks are going off, with over 65 per cent of owners believing that their pet picks up on this anxiety. 34
Moreover, nearly 80 per cent of those questioned stated that they try and calm their pet if it is anxious while fireworks are going off and over 50 per cent of owners are so concerned about their pet that they do not leave it alone in the house. As a result, over 50 per cent of owners state that they enjoy fireworks less due to their pet’s fear. Andrew Fullerton MRCVS, behaviour technical manager at Ceva Animal Health, comments: “The firework season is a stressful time for both the nation’s pets and their owners, however owners should act normally around their pets and try to keep as calm as possible to help them feel more settled. Overly fussing a pet that appears frightened will reinforce this behaviour. Instead owners should try and distract pets with a toy or game. “Building a den for a dog and a
28 SEPTEMBER – 28 OCTOBER 2017 RESCUE A PET
hideaway for a cat a few weeks in advance will give pets a safe place to retreat to when fireworks start. Plugging in an ADAPTIL or FELIWAY CLASSIC Diffuser close to the den will help them feel secure and create a calm environment for them to retreat to. Ceva also has a list of top 10 tips to give to owners (along with the diffuser) around firework time. Confining two cats to a household while fireworks are going off may cause inter-cat aggression. FELIWAY FRIENDS can help reduce conflicts and aggression between cats.” n For further information contact your local Ceva Animal Health account manager or visit www.adaptil.com/uk or www.feliway.com/uk
Tranquil
Tranquil is an aqueous infusion of Valerian. This herb has been used for centuries to effectively calm down the over excited and hyperactive dog, as well as helping a stressed or nervous dog. This is particularly valuable for hyperactive dogs as it does not make the animal 'drugged', but rather calms then down without dulling them. Visit www.animal-health.co.uk

I'm sure you've all heard the amazing and ridiculous 999 phone calls released by the emergency services. We have an out of hours "emergency" number and are no less immune from the type of calls they receive.
"I work so can't call during the day, but really do want a collier." "Is someone at home during the day, or who could call in to see to the dog?" "My missus has left me and you can't get the Police to visit our block of flats so won't not be anyone to do that, why is that a problem?" "Well, if you're out at work during the day it means the dog has no access to go to the toilet, especially if you live in a flat and that could lead to housetraining problems and then fouling in the flat while you're out." "You can train 'em though can't you?"
Mobile phone rings "Hello, ABC Rescue" "Is that the rescue place?" "ABC Rescue in Anywhereshire, yes" "Dog rescue place? "Yes, ABC Rescue" "Have you got any border colliers? "We rescue and rehome border collies, yes" "Yeah, so got any colliers?" "As I said we rescue and rehome them, so yes we always have collies looking for new homes." "How many you got?" "This is our out of hours emergency number, do you have a dog you need to rehome or an urgent problem."
It Could Only Happen In Animal Rescue www.rescueapet.co.uk
"You can housetrain them yes but it's a bit unfair to expect a dog to be left for long hours every day without access to a toilet and you can't really train them to use the toilet in the flat can you? (yes I really did say that!!)." "Sounds like you don't think it's a good idea to get a rescue collier then?" "I do think that as you are out at work all day, you live in a flat and the dog could potentially be left for long hours I don't think your situation at the moment is ideal to adopt a dog." "What if I had a pup." "No I really, really don't think so." "Hmmm, what about one of them Damnations, my mates got one and he leaves it all day." "I wouldn't like to comment about any other breeds I'm afraid, anything else I can help with?"
"I need a border collier that's the problem."
"No, thanks mate"
"Okay, details of the dogs we have for rehoming are always on our website and you can call our office Monday to Friday during office hours and we'll be happy to help."
And finally - You wouldn't would you?
"Are the dogs neutralised?" "Sorry" "Neutralised, you know spaded, neutralised" "You mean neutered?" "Yes, neutralised" "Some are, some we have to get done and some we would ask the new owner to have done at some point in the future, could you call our office perhaps and we can certainly do our best to help."

Calling all knitters
Toy mice and blankets needed for playful cats! Crafty cat-lovers are being urged to help unwanted cats this autumn by making cosy blankets and fun mouse toys as part of Cats Protection’s knitting bee. The UK’s largest cat charity is appealing for knitters to get creative and help make life a little more comfortable for cats and kittens as they wait to find new homes. Now in its fourth year, the charity’s annual appeal to knitters will be launched at this year’s Knitting and Stitching Show at the Alexandra Palace, London, in October. Donations of knitted blankets or mice can be brought along to the charity’s stand at the event, or dropped into any of its branches, shops or adoption centres across the UK. Cats Protection is the UK’s largest cat charity and helps around 190,000 cats every year through a network of over 250 volunteer-led branches and 32 centres. The charity’s Events Manager Emma Osborne said: “Our knitting bee grows in popularity every year and we’re always bowled over by how much support we receive. Whether it’s a fun mouse toy or a cosy, snuggly blanket – all donations of knitted goods are greatly received. “Taking part in our knitting bee is great way to fill those chilly and dark autumn evenings while helping make life a little more comfortable for unwanted cats.” Knitters can come up with their own designs or follow a pattern for the popular Captain Cat-Battler knitted mouse - originally designed by Lauren O'Farrell (www.whodunnknit.com) – which will be available to pick up at the
show. Knitters can also get a copy, and find out details of their local Cats Protection shop, branch or Adoption Centre, by calling the charity's National Information Line on 03000 12 12 12. As well as details of the knitting bee, Cats Protection’s stand will be a great place to stock up on Christmas cards and gifts, with a range of cat-related merchandise on offer. Visitors will be able to use touch screen facilities to take a look at the charity’s online Find-a-Cat search tool to see cats and kittens available for homing in their area. The charity will also be giving show visitors the chance to sign its petition asking the government to introduce licencing of air guns in England and Wales. Cats Protection advises that when knitting a toy or blanket, it’s best to avoid the use of stretchy yarns or small plastic items – such as those that can be used for mouse eyes – to reduce the risk of injury to cats and kittens. Loose weave blanket patterns involving the use of large needles are best avoided too. The charity also suggests that cat owners regularly inspect cat toys for signs of wear or damage, not to leave cats unattended with knitted toys, and not to use knitted toys or blankets with cats that have wool-chewing habits. n More information about Cats Protection can be found at www.cats.org.uk To find out more about the Knitting & Stitching Show, please visit www.theknittingandstitchingshow.com

10-Day-Old Kittens Found in Bin Bag Four tiny 10-day-old kittens, found in a bin bag, are now on the road to recovery thanks to Mayhew and their dedicated team of foster carers. he kittens, named Teenie, Tiny, Titch and Smalls by Mayhew staff, were first discovered by a member of the public who noticed the black bin bag moving in Brent in North West London. After finding the scared and tiny kittens inside, the member of the public immediately brought them to Mayhew, where they were alerted to the attention of our Animal Welfare Officers. Our Vet Team were on hand to give the kittens a full check-up and our cattery team settled them into a cosy cabin in our kitten block where they could feel safe, settled and secure. Mayhew’s Animal Welfare Officer, Paul Grimes, said: “We can’t imagine how terrifying it must have been for these 10-day-old kittens to be abandoned in a bin bag. It’s
T
worrying to think what would have happened to the kittens if they hadn’t been found so quickly.” Since they were without their mother, Teenie, Tiny, Titch and Smalls needed round-the-clock specialist care, so two of our dedicated foster carers took on the task of hand-rearing them. Mayhew’s Cat Welfare Coordinator, Georgina Disney, said:
“As they are sadly without their mother, we needed to do everything that the mummy cat would usually do to ensure they grow into happy adult cats. Every three hours throughout the day and night our foster carers had to feed them with special veterinary-formulated kitten substitute milk. It is always best to have routine and stability and we usually keep the kittens with the same foster carer.” “This is such a difficult and time-consuming job which involves a lot of close monitoring and specialist care, that’s why it can be dangerous for anyone to try and do it themselves, so we recommend always coming to us first. We recommend seeking a vet’s advice or call us for advice as
in the hands of an inexperienced person, it could be life threatening for the kittens.” “We are incredibly grateful for our experienced foster carers who Mayhew staff trained to help us to hand rear kittens, like Teenie, Tiny, Titch and Smalls.” Once they are all old enough, they will be vaccinated and neutered and ready to find their purrfect forever home. Our Animal Welfare Officers rescue and help hundreds of animals in need every year and actively work in the local community preventing animal welfare problems becoming crises and work extensively with vulnerable pet owners in society. Find out more about their work here by visiting our website www.themayhew.org and please consider a donation to help them help even more kittens such as Teenie, Tiny, Titch, and Smalls. We are also looking for more dedicated foster carers to help us care for our animals. n To find out more about fostering a Mayhew animal and to apply to become a foster carer, please visit www.themayhew.org

Looking after Wounds Dogs can suffer injuries in many different ways and it is important to seek Veterinary advice first with any accident suffered. Your dog may have had surgery and has a wound that needs looking after. Once your dog comes home you will have been given some instructions on how to look after the wound until you are due a check up back at the Vets. Wounds can be divided into different groups based on the cause and type of damage. Types of Wounds • Incised - these are clean cut and often caused by glass or other sharp objects. • Puncture - these are small but deep caused by bites or thorns. • Lacerated - Irregular wound with extensive damage to the skin, caused by barbed wire etc. • Avulsion - Separation of a tissue from its attachments causing damage to blood vessels, common in road traffic accidents. • Abrasion - The skin is removed but not full thickness. Can be painful and usually a result of friction common with a road traffic accident. • Haematoma - this is a pocket of blood under the skin. Commonly happens in the ear flaps. • Contusion - Blood vessels rupture under the skin. often because of a blunt trauma. One of the skills of a Veterinary Nurse is to detect early signs of wound complications by careful observations. Many wounds will have a dressing on when your dog comes home from the Vet and some will not. You can make sure the wound is healthy by looking for the following: Exudate Exudate is liquid that wounds can produce. If exudate leaks through a dressing it has to be changed. Erythema This is reddening and can be limited to the suture area. If the reddening increases beyond the stitches then advice must be sought. Oedema This is swelling in the area. Note whether this is increasing or decreasing.
Haematoma A Haematoma is a blood filled swelling. You need to note whether it is increasing or decreasing. Pain Note the severity of the pain, maybe on a score of 1 - 10 is helpful. Note if the pain is continuous, intermittent, only when the wound is handled or no pain at all.
Rachel Bean
Rachel Bean RVN MCFBA
Odour Note if there is a foul smell from the wound. If there is seek Veterinary help.
Rachel Bean has been in Veterinary Practice for 18 years, 6 of those years as a Head Nurse. She is Registered Veterinary Nurse registered with The Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons and qualified in 2002. This length of time in frontline practice gives her the necessary experience in Emergency situations and how to deal with trauma, accidents and life threatening conditions. Her Canine First Aid Workshops have been running regularly now for a number of years and as her reputation grows she is now the preferred tutor for many Canine related companies, organisations and disciplines. It is Rachels view that tutors should have real experience of First Aid situations to be able to teach effectively to Canine Carers.
PREVENTION OF DAMAGE TO THE WOUND
Dogs will lick or try to chew the bandage off. Persistent interference of the wound area may indicate wound complications and advice must be sought. Dressings will help reduce self damage, but a determined dog or young dog will soon destroy most bandages. Bitter sprays can be useful but not as effective as preventing access to the wound altogether. Use of an Elizabethan Collar is one of the most effective ways to prevent wound damage. Reasons to Remove a Dressing You may have to remove a dressing if your dog: • Chewing the dressing persistently • There is a foul smell • If the bandage gets soiled on a walk, gets wet or urine soaked. • You see exudate coming through the bandage. • The bandage slips from the original place. If you do remove the bandage for any of these reasons, ring your Vet for advice. LOOKING AFTER MINOR WOUNDS Dogs will suffer minor scrapes and scratches that will not need a Veterinary visit. Dogs heal very quickly and
Rachel Bean Canine Behaviourist
can be treated at home if they are minor. Once a scab has formed make sure the wound is healthy looking and isn't red, swollen and the dog is leaving it alone. Once the scab has formed and it is looking healthy, just leave it alone, there is no need to continue to clean it or put any ointments on. If you are worried at all about any wound at any stage of healing whether it is minor or post surgical, call your Vets for advice and help.

Going Dotty for Dalmatians Fish4Dogs is expecting the patter of tiny feet – 404 of them to be exact – as a supporter of a festive theatre production of Dodie Smith’s magical tale of The One Hundred and One Dalmatians. The ‘spot-acular’ festive offering is being staged at Birmingham Repertory Theatre from 30 November to 13 January. Fish4Dogs’ sponsorship not only supports one of the country’s leading repertory theatres, which as a registered charity relies on the support of individual donors, trusts and sponsors, but is also helping Hearing Dogs for Deaf People which as a result of a unique partnership with The REP, will receive 20 per cent of all funds raised during the run. A doggy creche for hearing dogs will be created in The REP’s foyer on selected dates. Fish4Dogs will be helping look after canines in its care by providing ‘doggy bags’ for their owners to take away after the show, while guarding them from anyone looking remotely like Cruella de Vil! The Fish4Dogs team joined members of The REP for a launch in Birmingham’s Victoria Square on 10 September when Sunday shoppers literally saw dots before their eyes amidst a throng of Dalmatians – including owners and volunteers from Hearing Dogs for Deaf People - who were there to support the launch. Said Jo Little, Marketing Support Manager for Fish4Dogs, “We had a tremendous time launching this

I’ve never seen so many spotty dogs in one place before and we had some tempting Fish4Dogs treats to give them as a little reward.” Rachel Cranny, Head of Fundraising at The REP said; “We are extremely grateful to Fish4Dogs for their support and are thrilled to be working with them alongside this special production”. Books ...
Bolt and Keel The Dogs of Avalon By Laura Schenone After adopting an Irish sight hound, Laura Schenone discovered a remarkable and little-known fight to gain justice for animals. Greyhounds, streaks of lightning, were bred to be the fastest dogs on earth. Yet for decades tens of thousands were destroyed, abandoned and abused each year when they couldn’t run fast enough. Scrappy Marion Fitzgibbon, whose empathy for animals made her relentless, became obsessed with saving these dogs—despite the overwhelming power of dog-racing proponents.
The Little Village Christmas By Sue Moorcroft Alexia Kennedy has lived in the little village of Middledip all her life – and now it’s time for her to give something back. As an interior decorator, she’s been tasked with turning the village’s neglected Victorian pub into a community café that everyone can use. After months of fundraising by all the villagers, Alexia can’t wait to get going – but disaster strikes when every last penny is stolen. With Middledip up in arms at how she could have let this happen, Alexia feels ready to admit defeat.
Mike & Scrabble A guide to training your new Human By Scrabble, dictated to Mike Dicks There are many wise, practical and academic books that explore the relationship between animals and their owners. Mike & Scrabble is not one of them. Instead, this picture book for adults gives an insight into the mind of a dog who has acquired a slightly damaged Human, and sets about trying to train him. This is a book that dogs will buy, but as they have trouble using an Ipad and don’t keep money one them, it may well be attractive to their Human pets.

The Voice of Animals By Margrit Coates Life can be so busy and demanding that many of us are looking for new ways to find harmony – and what could be a better route to peace than by tuning into the wisdom of a much-loved dog, cat or horse? In her new book, world-acclaimed animal communicator Margrit Coates shares 10 life-healing lessons learnt from animals. Using varied means of communication, all animals – domestic and wild – have teachings to offer us that will enable us to realise our true potential. We too can find calm and contentment,.
Mike & Scrabble Too Further tips on training your Human By Mike Dicks Training a Human is never easy, but, building on the ideas, jokes and visual gags of their first book (A guide to training your new Human), this book reveals the developing relationship between a sophisticated, smart and caring Dog and dumb Human. Every day, Scrabble gets Mike to illustrate a thought about the relationship between a Dog and Human. Sometimes the thoughts are funny; sometimes they are sad, but they very oftenbring a little smile of recognition from a growing number of Mike & Scrabble fans on social media… and now in bookshops and libraries all over the world. We hope they do the same for you.

Arthur and Friends By Mikael Lindnord Arthur and Friends: The incredible story of a rescue dog, and how our dogs rescue us Three years ago, Mikael Lindnord met a scruffy, plucky stray dog on an adventure race in Ecuador. Despite illness and injury the dog followed Mikael for hundreds of miles, and eventually he took him home to Sweden to be part of the family. He named him Arthur. Arthur & Friends is the story of what happened next, from Arthur's first Christmas, to book tours to London and around Europe, to a terrifying bout of illness and new races and adventures.

The Wild Adventures of two Rescued Cats By Kayleen VanderRee & Danielle Gumbley Stunning photographs of two adorable cats—Instagram stars— who hike, paddle and snowshoe through the wilderness. Two kittens were abandoned in a park. The women who found them were about to head off on a mountain trek and the animal shelter was closed. The cats seemed game so their intrepid rescuers brought Bolt and Keel (so named) along for the adventure. Bolt and Keel invites readers to join the cats (and their humans) on a striking photographic journey through British Columbia’s beautiful forrests, mountains and rivers.
Waggish By Grace Chon & Melanie Monteiro In Waggish, the infinite expressions of happy dogs are captured in an amazing series of photographs by renowned animal photographer Grace Chon, whose images have made her the go-to pet photographer of Hollywood’s top celebrities. As for what these dogs are really thinking, writer Melanie Monteiro expertly channels their innermost thoughts, pairing each photo with a caption such as, “If loving tennis balls is wrong, I don’t want to be right” and “You know, we’ll both get outside a lot quicker if you just forget the pants.” Waggish is the perfect gift for every dog lover.

THOUSANDS FLOCK TO PRIMROSE HILL FOR PUPAID 2017 Saturday 2nd September saw thousands of families and their pooches flock to doggy-friendly haven Primrose Hill for the biggest FREE dog festival PupAid; all in the name of raising awareness about the cruel puppy-farming trade and encouraging rescue pet adoption. One of many highlights of the day was the celebrity-judged dog show with judges including Sue Perkins, Sir Tony Robinson, BAFTA winning ‘Fleabag’ actress Phoebe Waller Bridge, Peter Egan, Sinitta, Stephanie Pratt, PupAid patron and local resident Meg Mathews with daughter Anais Gallagher, and many more. PupAid was proud to welcome an extra special celebrity this year - Finn the Police Dog who survived a brutal stabbing attack in the line of duty. It was only fitting then that he should help judge Bravest Dog alongside legend Sir Tony Robinson who recently sadly lost his own rescue dog Winnie and was judging in her honour. They unanimously chose the courageous Badal, a dog with severe facial injuries that still show today, suffered from a machete attack, who was found wondering the streets of India. Owner Amanda Leask heard of www.rescueapet.co.uk
his plight on social media and rescued him to a life of love in the UK. Miracle was another star of the annual show, rescued from the Vietnamese Dog Meat Trade and a real poster boy for the cause, already winning a Daily Mirror Animal Hero Award, and also rescued by Amanda. Given the rescue pet awareness raising nature of PupAid, another firm favourite in the dog show is always Best Rescue which was judged this year by Sue Perkins, accompanied by her rescue Staffie Tigs. The lucky winner was the wonderful Bea the Beagle - rescued from life in a laboratory for animal testing. Guests also enjoyed the incredibly moving parade of ex-breeding bitches rescued from UK puppy farms to remind visitors just what PupAid is all about, as well as enjoying fantastic doggy displays by Hearing Dogs and Britain’s Got Talent Finalist’s Pip &
Buddy. All of this in basking sunlight and watered down with crueltyfree vegan-only food and refreshment stalls. Marc Abraham, TV Vet and founder of PupAid commented “PupAid 2017 was the biggest & best yet! So many passionate dog-loving campaigners, charities, politicians, brands, friends, celebs, and public all coming together to help dogs. Thanks to everyone who came and suopported, with even more awareness raised and
increasing public support for PupAid, we're now an even bigger step closer to finally ending the UK’s cruel puppy farming industry as well as rehoming even more rescue pets. Special thanks also to The Royal Parks, main sponsors Nutriment, as well as Specsavers, and Agria Pet Insurance”. n Visit www.pupaid.org

28 SEPTEMBER – 28 OCTOBER 2017 RESCUE A PET
Prime Minister Theresa May honours a volunteer from Bristol with a Points of Light award for his work raising around half a million pounds for good causes. Darren Sims, from Bristol, has raised almost £500,000 over 10 years by performing charitable concerts across the UK including a "Daz's Rock 4 Charity" concert in March this year on The Grand Pier, Weston-super-Mare which raised over £5,000 for HorseWorld’s Discovery Courses. Rescue charity HorseWorld run a program which helps children with Special Education Needs or outside of mainstream schooling to work alongside rescued horses, improving their confidence and communication skills. Darren’s work has benefitted many good causes, but he has devoted particular attention to children’s charities. Every year since 2007, he has performed charity concerts at major venues including the Colston Hall, Weston Pier, and the Park Lane Hilton. Over the course of a decade, Darren has inspired a team of more than 20 to raise money alongside him, whilst over 200 people have credited Darren with inspiring their own volunteering. Darren is the latest recipient of the Points of Light award which recognises outstanding volunteers who are making a change in their community and inspiring others. Each day, someone, somewhere in the country is selected to receive the award to celebrate their remarkable achievements. In a personal letter to Darren, Prime Minister Theresa May said: “Through the numerous charitable concerts you have organised over the past decade, you have raised £500,000 for a range of excellent causes. You should be proud of
how your extraordinary fundraising has also inspired hundreds of other people to undertake volunteering of their own.” Darren said: “I am absolutely thrilled and very honoured to receive this award, but I could not do what I do without the support of hundreds of other volunteers that help me organise and run the “Daz’s Rock 4 Charity” events, so this award is also for this team that support me in everything that I do”. Mark Owen, Managing Director of HorseWorld Trust, said : “We are so very grateful to “Daz” for his exceptional fundraising efforts for HorseWorld and our Discovery Project that helps Children with Special Educational needs by working with gentle rescued horses and ponies. The Rock 4 Charity concert he arranged for HorseWorld in March this year was a really great way to celebrate the charity’s 65th year and raised over £5,000. He is an extraordinary human being that always puts others before himself”. HorseWorld's Discovery Course Leader, Sharon Howell said: “The money that Daz has raised for the Discovery project will help fund places for disadvantaged and vulnerable young people to boost confidence, emotional well-being and life-chances through an innovative learning programme that brings them together with gentle rescued horses through interactive studies, having a massive impact on their mental wellbeing and futures.” The next Rock 4 Charity concert in aid of HorseWorld is Friday 9th March at The Grand Pier, Weston-super-Mare. n To find out more visit www.horseworld.org.uk www.rescueapet.co.uk
