Troublesome Treacle

CATCH UP EACH MONTH WITH OUR OFFICE DOG'S ANTICS!!! Hello My Furry and Feathered Friends, I’ve always loved a ‘Bad boy’ and a ‘Toy boy’ so Mr Holmes, my new Bassett Hound boyfriend is perfect for me! Things have developed since I sent Holmes a Valentine’s Day card which I had sneaked through his owners’ letterbox then ran like the speed of light back home. At first when he saw me after I had declared my love for him, he gave me the occasional cool glance with his beautiful brown eyes which made me go all of a quiver. What a surprise I had when Mistress said that she and I were going to Mr. and Mrs. Peppers – Holmes’s Mum and Dad’s house for tea! I rushed around screaming ‘ What collar shall I wear?’ Mistress told me to calm down and that I should have a wash and put a little of my Doggie Perfume spray on behind my ears. Mistress had heard from Mrs Pepper that Holmes is rather partial to dog ears and if he is playing with a dog taller than him (which are most dogs) he likes nothing better than to have a playful chew on their ears or have a gentle chew on their legs! ‘I must shave my legs’ I said to Mistress but she told me that was one step too far and a good groom with my brush will be fine. The next few days went really slowly. Saturday seems so far away and I paced up and down the floor and had butterflies in my tummy. I don’t know

what they were doing in there because I am sure they would be much happier flying around in the fresh air instead of running into contents of my last meal. When we arrived we found Holmes in his bed clutching his dog bowl. Mrs. Pepper told us that he was hungry and he sometimes does this to attract attention when he wants his food. She said to me ‘I hope you know what you are taking on Treacle. Holmes is a rascal! He’s definitely the boss and sometimes, when we ask him to do something, like tidy his toy box, he puffs up his cheeks and lets the air out slowly to make a disgruntled ‘Humph’ sound!’ None of this put me off as I smiled

Troublesome Treacle

Me and Mr. Holmes politely to my hosts. I just want to get up close and cosy with my new love. I sat next to Holmes as the humans chatted away about life in general and I asked him how old he is. I was surprised when he said he was only two and then asked how old I am. I was going to play the game of ‘How old do you think I am?’ but decided against it as didn’t want to appear too immature! I am a bit ashamed of myself because I told a wee ‘porky- pie’ and said ‘I am five’. Thank goodness Mistress was not in earshot. We talked about naughty things we had done and had a right giggle

recalling those hilarious things. Apparently Holmes was at a neighbours the other day and stole their dog’s bone running out of their house straight home to his bed! I told him about the times I had dropped my tennis ball repeatedly into the toilet and how Mistress was not in the slightest amused, whereas I could not stop laughing my head off! Oh, it seems me and Mr. Holmes really do have a Good Thing Going on!

Agria’s supporting the nation’s rescues with 5 weeks free pet insurance! Protecting animals since 1890, Agria is one of the world’s largest animal insurers. We actively promote pet health and welfare through our close work with a variety of charitable and veterinary organisations, by only offering ‘Lifetime’ insurance solutions – which makes a real difference to pets and their owners. We are extremely proud to support rescues, providing adopted animals with 5 weeks free pet insurance and the opportunity for their new owners to continue onto a lifetime policy – however old the pet is. If you are attending the ADCH Conference this year, visit our stand to find out how Agria could help you and your organisation protect more animals!

Here’s what our partners have to say about the scheme: “Feedback we’ve had from new owners for claims under the 5 weeks free policies is that they have gone through quickly, easily, and have been handled very professionally. We’re so happy to be working with Agria; nothing has ever been too much trouble and every single one of our dealings with the team has been absolutely spot on.” Marion Beardall, Trustee & Vice Chairwoman, The Edward Foundation “The biggest bonus of our partnership with Agria is that we

can now reassure adopters that even older cats will be able to continue onto a full lifetime policy with them. This makes it a lot easier for us to rehome our cats, and that’s what’s important.” Angela Walker, UK Coordinator, Birman Welfare and Rescue

A Greyt Pirate Tail by Miriam Payne By Miriam Payne Ramsey and Blue are back! Children around the world fell in love with this mischievous pair last year and this second book in the Greyt Tail series has been eagerly anticipated. This swashbuckling story of mischief and danger was inspired by Blue's fear of fireworks Ramsey comes up with a plan to get back at the pirates who dared to scare his girl. Join them on this rollicking adventure as they teach some salty seadogs a lesson in friendship, teamwork and bravery. Despite his own fear of fireworks, Ramsey always tries his very best to comfort Blue when they're going off. Most greyhounds have a huge fear of fireworks, due in no small part to the displays that are held at tracks throughout the year. Website: www.miriampayne.co.uk

Animal Health Trust

Leading science and care for animals We make animals' lives better The Animal Health Trust exists to fight disease and injury in animals. Thanks to our pioneering work improving diagnosis, treatment and prevention, dogs, cats and horses are living healthier, happier lives – in the UK and across the world. We have a small animal referral clinic for dogs and cats and an equine referral clinic for horses. We offer diagnostic laboratory services to vets and DNA testing to assist dog breeders. Our researchers and clinicians look for ways to diagnose problems, prevent them and, where we can, cure them. We share our knowledge internationally to benefit dogs, cats and horses all around the world.

Where does the money go? All funds we raise through our services, go straight back into developing new diagnostic tests, treatments and vaccines to help thousands more animals. Nearly all horses, dogs and cats in the UK will have benefited from our work – that includes your pets and those of your family and friends.

Animal Health Trust Charity Lottery A new initiative for 2018! We are inviting you to join our weekly charity lottery. For just £1 a week, you will be supporting our life-saving work while you also have the chance to win cash prizes in the weekly draw. It's win-win for everyone! Sign up today at: www.aht.org.uk/lottery

How does it work? We have partnered with Unity, an award-winning charity lottery company. Unity run the charity lottery on our behalf and they are responsible for providing the prize money. The Animal Health Trust is guaranteed to receive at least

50p of every £1 played in the charity lottery and there are no other costs to the AHT to facilitate the lottery.

What's your number? Once you have signed up you will be given a six digit lottery number for each £1 entry. A six digit number is drawn every week and you win based on how closely your six digit number matches the winning number (your numbers need to be in the same order as those in the winning number). The more times you enter, the more six digit numbers you will have and the higher your chances of winning will be - and

the more money you will donate to support our vital work. You can sign up online or you can download a postal form.

What are the prizes? If you match... • Three numbers you win five more entries in the next draw. • Four numbers you win £25. • Five numbers you win £1,000. • Six numbers you win £25,000. These prizes are won every week, and you will automatically be notified by Unity if you win. Good luck - and please encourage your family and friends to sign up, too!

The more people that enter, the more money the AHT will raise which will be spent saving animals' lives through continuing to provide leading science and care for dogs, cats and horses.

Rules You must be over 16 years old and live in Britain to play (unfortunately due to gambling legislation we can’t offer this opportunity to people living in Northern Ireland). For full Unity Game Rules please visit our website: www.aht.org.uk/lottery

Greyhounds in Need Free, Fun and engaging learning materials all about galgos

Education centre

Educating children about caring for galgos

Greyhounds in Need is a charity dedicated to the rescue of galgos and the education of children about respecting and caring for them. Educating the next generations is important. Helping children understand the plight of the galgo and recognising them as sentient animals that make wonderful pets, will perhaps one day mean that the numbers of galgos in need of Greyhounds in Need’s help will decline.

On their bright and informative website they have introduced a brilliant new teaching resource for teachers and parents. Their activities and lesson plans are free for you to download from www.greyhoundsinneed.co.uk Their activities support the teaching and learning of English vocabulary and phrases relating to the expression of feelings and emotions, using images, data and a story based on how we help many galgos. They can be used with children and young people to help them learn English (or Spanish!) and find out more about the galgos.

Activities include:- Make a puppet for story role-play activities using templates. Guidance for creating puppets. Meet the GIN galgos, find out about their lives and use their pictures to create your own galgo stories. Using their activity guide and poster template create your own posters to help rehome and raise awareness of the galgos. Children can find out more about what a rescue shelter is and what they do and help teach others all about galgos and promote their local rescue shelter. We work with a number of shelters who are using the education material. We have been able to offer funding for education areas, grants and recently were able to fund an education building for Galgos del Sol in Murcia. Tracey and Leigh from GIN visited there recently and had the honour of “cutting the ribbon” to open the building. The education

programme is expected to start in May, and they hope that local schools and young people will benefit from the facilities and the education programme.

Why Animal Charities

As an avid reader of Rescue, you’ll be well aware of the good work carried out by the animal charities! Often the last hope for our animal friends, the work of charities is critical. Sometimes,

The Labrador Lifeline Trust

20th Anniversary Year of Labrador Lifeline Trust and 5000+ Labradors, A chihuahua, A Donkey and one or two Staffies rehomed

Nearly all dogs that come into Labrador Lifeline Trust have a problem whether it be behavioural or medical. In order to get these dogs the right homes the Trust bears the major cost of treatment and in some cases supports the dog for the rest of its life. Recently we have taken in two ex puppy farm bitches who have needed a huge amount of tlc. One of the girls was found to have a major kidney problem and our local vet operated to remove an infected kidney. Another delightful little chocolate bitch came to us with joint problems and again our vet has operated to correct the problem. In these two dogs alone we are facing veterinary bills of over £5000 plus the ongoing care now they have been rehomed. Every donation we receive is spent on our dogs and none is used for administration purposes. Any help you can give us would be much appreciated. Why not become a member of Friends of Labrador Lifeline at an annual cost of £15 and receive our newsletter 4 times per year, then you can keep up with all the activities of the Trust. The Labrador Lifeline Trust is a charity dedicated to rescuing, rehoming and helping Labradors. They are now in their nineteenth year of helping Labradors in need of new homes and their main priority is placing the right dog in the right home. They cover the areas of Bedfordshire, Berkshire, Buckingham , Hampshire, Hertfordshire, Parts of Lincolnshire, Surrey and West Sussex.

Looking for a Labrador!

The Labrador Lifeline Trust often has dogs from 6 months upwards available for rehoming. As this is an ever changing situation they are not always able to show pictures of the dogs on their website but all other details will be current. All homes will be checked prior to rehoming-you will need to complete and submit an application form before they can offer you a dog, and you can download this on www.labrador-lifeline.com. This can be completed and returned online to your nearest Area Co-ordinator .If you are interested in a specific dog on their site then please mark your form with the HD number that appears against the details of the dog. Rehoming advice and guidance. Please note that in the interests of our dogs’ welfare we do not home to people who are out at work all day. Our role is to find the right new home for Labradors whose owners can no longer keep for whatever reason and to give peace of mind we will personally always check every potential home and ensure that it will be a kind and loving environment for any rescued dog. The Labrador Lifetime Trust check every Labrador thoroughly before rescue and rehoming to be sure that the dog and the new owner are right for each other. You should NEVER accept a dog from anyone who doesn’t do this as any dog you are offered you may not know its history, health or temperament.

What is it about Labradors that makes them so incredibly easy to adore? There’s no denying that they are an extremely popular choice of breed as a pet, but we wondered why…

L

abradors are friendly, often exuberant, and have very jolly personalities with a sense of fun. If you see a cartoon about country life then chances are a Labrador will be featured. They have a dependable good nature, they can be playful and they like nothing more than being with us. What could be better? And the puppies are often a bit bumptious, clumsy and bouncy…. Adorable! Whether chosen to be a pet, or as a working dog, a Labrador will give you his or her all and will be a trustworthy and loyal companion.

Here are ten good reasons to let a Labrador bound into your life: Grooming: Their coats are easy to care for, and only need a bath now and then. They don’t need trips to the poodle parlour and their fur dries quickly! A regular brush will doubtless help keep their coat in good condition, plus give you a chance to check for injuries etc. Swimming: they are good swimmers and actually have webbed paws! Just make sure your Labrador is swimming somewhere safe. It’s exercise they will really enjoy plus throwing a ball out to be retrieved is fun for both of you. Training: they are reportedly one of the easiest breeds to train as they are eager to please and compliant. Find a nice group to join, or establish rules from a young age. Family life: they are well suited to family life and will want to do what you do and be with you. When you sleep, they sleep; when you eat, they eat! Many people with Labradors feel as if they are simply a four-legged

member of the family who joins in with everything. Size: they are a medium-sized to large breed, which tend not to get too large. Although some dogs can grow to 100 pounds, they tend to be about 22-24 inches tall and 60-75 pounds. Bitches are typically 21-23 inches tall and 55-70 pounds. Loved: they are considered to be one of the most well-loved breeds globally so when you welcome a Labrador into your family you’re joining a whole new family of your own! Workers: Labradors like to be useful! They are happy when working, serving as guide dogs, therapy dogs and are used in fishing, hunting, and detection thanks to their supremely good sense of smell. Part Labrador: even if part Labrador, your dog will likely still have Labrador personality traits. Health: Labradors area little prone to hip and elbow dysplasia, plus eye disorders but generally lead long, healthy lives. Walkies! If you like long walks, then a Labrador is ideal for you! They need to be walked a lot as without enough mental or physical stimulation, they can become destructive. One long walk a day and your Labrador will be pleased as punch.

Give a Labrador a Home Due to their popularity, Labradors tend be re-homed quickly if they find themselves in need of a new start or home. However, they do become available and sometimes they are in need of a new home as their owner has passed away. These lovely doting dogs must be heart-broken to suddenly lose their human best buddy. Some may be retired guide dogs or working dogs looking for a quiet retirement with plenty of snoozing as well as gentle walkies. It is well worth considering an older Labrador as a lot of their youthful exuberance has scampered away, and they are ready to devote themselves to their golden years in a most dedicated and loyal way. If you would like a Labrador, it’s worth letting your local dog rescue centres know plus follow their websites, social media etc. You could even let them know you are right for the breed as that will help them keep you in mind. There are however specialist Labrador re-homing centres including loveyourlabrador.co.uk

which covers the South East and Central England up to the Midlands. Established in 1996, they say that often ‘dogs find themselves homeless through no fault of their own; factors such as domestic crisis, bereavement, ill treatment and financial problems can all lead to dogs needing new homes.’ They make the point that if you are in the unfortunate position that you are unable to keep your dog, you need to make sure it is re-homed professionally, and that its long term future is assured. Their helpers visit every dog in their own home and make a full written report about the dog to ensure they find the right new home for them. Funded entirely by donation, they have eleven co-ordinators, assisted by over 100 helpers who carefully assess each dog and potential home to ensure matches are a success.

If you have decided to share your life with a Labrador, we wish you a very happy, bouncy and much-loved life together!

Horses arriving at HorseWorld

19

Abandoned Shire horses rescued

Six horse charities have come together to rescue a herd of 19 Shire horses being illegally fly-grazed in Bewdley, Worcestershire

H

orseWorld joined forces with Redwings Horse Sanctuary, RSPCA, World Horse Welfare, Bransby Horses and the Blue Cross to round up the group which included mares and foals.

During the 15-hour rescue operation, all 19 horses were successfully removed from the site. “We were pleased to be able to offer a home to three of the horses” said HorseWorld’s

Managing Director, Mark Owen. “When our charity was founded 66 years ago, heavy horses like these were common. Our charity began by offering homes to working horses that were being replaced by vehicles and machinery, in fact the first horse we ever rescued was a Shire horse called Ben. They are part of our heritage. “Up until a couple of years ago we always had heavy horses at the farm but they are quite rare nowadays. I am surprised that such a large number of this valuable breed would just be left with no provision to get them through the winter. They will take a lot of love and care to bring them back up to full health. The youngest of the three horses in our care had an infection and liver damage. She is only two-years-old but will need quite a lot of veterinary attention for the foreseeable future.

Florin and Dime

“Another of the mares is very elderly and quite arthritic so needed some pain medication in order to be able to lift her legs to have her hooves trimmed. The dentist has also had to do some work to try and save the teeth she has left. She will need to be fed a special veteran feed several times a day to keep her at a healthy weight as she will find the hay quite difficult to chew. She would really have struggled through the winter once the grass had run out if they had been left where they were. I doubt she would have made it until Spring. I am so pleased that HorseWorld, by working in partnership with other equine charities, were able to safeguard the future of all of these horses.”

You can meet HorseWorld’s rescued horses at one of the centre’s 4 Open Days a year which can be found at www.horseworld.org.uk/events No dogs except assistance dogs please

Aggression Q

I have been advised by a dog behaviourist to see my vet for a referral before they will assess my dog, ‘Chubby’. He has become aggressive towards me, why would I need to see a vet first?

This is a question that I am asked quite a lot. I can fully understand why the behaviourist has said this. You need to take Chubby to see your vet because there are many behavioural problems that can be caused by underlying diseases. You haven’t mentioned about Chubby’s aggression or if you have noticed any other behaviour changes like mood swings or irritability. Aggressive behaviour alongside other changes such as disorientation, change in appetite, physical pain or discomfort such as ear ache or joint pain can often be symptoms of physical disease. When assessing canine behaviour, especially problem behaviour your veterinary surgeon needs to be involved in the diagnostic evaluation. Normal hormonal influences, parasite infections, deafness, stress, anxiety in addition to genetics all need to be considered when assessing Chubby’s behaviour and all can play their part in establishing an aggressive response. It would be pointless and potentially a loss of money for you if your behaviourist assessed and provided a rehabilitation plan for Chubby if his aggression was caused by a medical condition – so rule this out first by visiting your vet!

A

Q

My young German Pointer bitch, Bella, was recently spayed, and she has become more aggressive, why would this be?

Some female dogs certainly become more aggressive after being spayed. One reason is linked with dominance aggression (please remember that dominance ‘itself’ is not a form of aggression). You mentioned Bella has become more aggressive, suggesting she demonstrated some aggression before being spayed? If Bella did demonstrate behaviour associated with dominance aggression prior to being spayed and she was under a year old at spaying, then spaying was likely to increase her aggression. Another reason for her aggression may be linked with something referred to as ‘androgenisation’. Do you know what gender the other puppies were in Bella’s litter and how many there were? If there were significantly more males to females then Bella may have been ‘flooded’ with androgen while developing in the womb. Androgen is a male hormone, when exposed to this during development bitches can acquire more male type behaviour and characteristics, including aggression. You have not mentioned details of her aggression, but a significant number of female dogs also become aggressive toward children after being spayed. You can read more about this by reading Podberscek and Serpell (1996). It is likely you will need professional support to you manage and prevent her aggression but in the first instance try to gain as much information about Bella when she was a puppy and about her litter.

28 MARCH – 28 APRIL 2018 RESCUE A PET

My little Jack Russell dog, Marcus, continually wees on everything when we are out walking, I used to take him everywhere with me but now I cannot take him to garden centres or pet shops because of this problem, is this something I can stop? He has been castrated and rarely does this at home.

Q

What a great name! It does sound as though Marcus finds urine marking the focus of his life! This is usually the case where dogs consider themselves higher ranking, are territorial or demonstrate true inter-dog aggression. Once learned this behaviour can also become a ritualised pattern and it is not just restricted to the male domain. Female dogs also mark their territory in this way too but usually restrict their marking to horizontal objects or surfaces. Male dogs probably like Marcus, will try to elevate and urine as high as possible on any vertical surface. I would imagine that Marcus lifts his leg very high (depending on his age) and probably discharges a small amount of urine on most occasions. Usually the trigger to urinate is olfactory (linked with smells), so it is likely all the places you take Marcus have prior scenting from previous dogs or other animals. Does he also lick the area before urinating? If he does then he is likely to be trying to freshen up the smell and then ‘taste’ the odour through his vomeral nasal gland (also known as Jacobson’s Organ) to analyse the information. It has been suggested that frequent urine marking provides dogs with an enhanced sense of confidence as their urine makes the areas they walk in more familiar. Excessive urination (when nonmedical) needs management and prevention rather than behavioural rehabilitation. Marcus’ behaviour it is a response to an environmental trigger. You are doing right by avoiding the opportunity, if walking out with you, try to avoid him smelling everything, keep him focused on you, reward his attention with food or praise (whatever works for him). Try not to tell him off as this can create additional problems!

She is a very sweet and affectionate dog once she knows you and will make a very loyal pet.

She's very friendly and affectionate once she bonds with you but can get jealous at times.

He's a friendly young pup and loves people. He loves his toys.

He is a sweet boy, lovely with people, as far as we know he hasn't been around children.

She is a lovely girl when she knows you but can be a bit wary of strangers, mainly with men.

Gozo is quite anxious and insecure so needs someone who will be around a lot of the time.

He is a friendly lad who loves a fuss. He is well behaved in the house.

He would require a ample sized garden where he can stretch those long legs of his and a nice shady area to relax in the summer sun.

He is still full of beans, so will need regular walks and a nice fully enclosed, secure garden to run and play in.

He will need a calm home, so he does not get overwhelmed by his surroundings.

She will need a fully enclosed garden to play in and an active family to keep up with her.

She would benefit hugely from activities such as agility or flyball as she has quite a demanding nature.

We would recommend his new family take him to training classes, to aid with his basic training.

She can live with compatible cats and dogs and children of a suitable age.

Sensitive tummies Like their human owners, some of our dogs can suffer from a sensitive tummy whilst others can digest anything without issue. Some of our dogs can hoover up anything they find out on walks and in the garden without a tummy murmur. I don’t advocate this, as there have been some horrible humans leaving poisons out and about, so try rewarding your dog with better treats and teaching a leave command.

By Jennie Gallaher

S

igns that your pouch may suffer from a sensitive tummy are, constant or inconsistently soft stools, excessive flatulence (or as my nephew calls them “stink bombs”), occasional vomiting, itchy skin, a poor coat condition, skin rash, noisy stomach & energy levels changed (either lethargic or hyperactive). Get a check-up from your vet, who will examine your dog and rule out any underlying physical issues that could cause symptoms as well as disease, virus, blockage etc. Check your dog food is suitable for your dog’s age, for instance puppy food contains more protein and higher calories then adult food. This is because of the energy the body needs to grow into an adult. You will all know how much your teenage children can eat when they have a growth spurt. Smaller dogs mature quicker than the larger breeds so the switch to adult food can be earlier for the little dogs. Too much protein in an adult dog’s diet can cause dietary problems as well as excess behaviours. A friend asked my advice as her

young pet dog was having some behavioural issues. The first thing I asked was what food he was on. He was on a feed meant for working dogs, which was giving him too much energy. She saw a marked improvement once switched to a food more suitable for his activity levels. Look at the ingredients in the food, the most common food allergens for dogs are dairy, eggs, soy, too high a fat content and wheat gluten. So try to switch to a dog food without those. You do want to have something with both soluble and insoluble fibre in, this is essential for good gut health (beet pulp and sweet potato are great for this). A food with probiotics is also a benefit as it tops up the good bacteria in the gut. Do not switch dog foods on a regular basis and when you do switch to it gradually by mixing the new food with the current food, gradually increasing the ratio of new food to old over a 10-14 day period, until you are on 100% new food. Unless you have a reaction to the new food, increasing the symptoms shown, allow a good month for signs such as improved skin condition to show. Some have found a near instant improvement to itchy skin when switching to a wheat gluten free diet. There is a huge range of dog foods on the market bespoke to age levels, activity levels and

“ Do not switch dog foods on a regular basis and when you do switch to it gradually. ”

Twiglet eating breakfast in caravan in a yoga pose! dietary requirements. So do some research, looks at reviews, look at availability in your area and of course find one that suits your dog and your budget. Remember don’t undo the good work of researching and selecting the dog food by giving them food scraps off your table or treats and training treats that contain the ingredients you’ve selected out of their diet. The hardest job, which I have found over the years, is to stop other people treating my dogs with either bits of their own human lunch or unsuitable treats. There are many natural treats you can find to keep training and treating them with that won’t upset their tummies. There are even recipes that you can follow to make your own dog treats.

The Itchy, Scratchy Dog! Itchy, scratchy pets account for around 25% of all visits to the veterinary surgery in the UK and there are few conditions that are more frustrating! All too often, the condition is a chronic recurring one of indeterminate source that may be parasitic, environmental and nutritional compounded by secondary bacterial infections and influenced by breed. Categories that need to be ruled out by the vet

• A country rambler/hunter that regularly comes into contact with foxes and other wildlife that may have sarcoptic mange

• Puppies and kittens that are 1 year old or less who may be suffering from serious genetic disorders or Type 1 diabetes • Dogs, 7 years old or more, overweight, lethargic and who drink a lot of water that may have Type 2 diabetes, underactive thyroid or kidney problems • Young or rescue dogs that have clearly suffered from stress, poor nutrition and healthcare in early life who may be prone to demodectic mange or ringworm

The first four conditions are easily diagnosed but sarcoptic mange can often be mistaken for food allergies. Skin scrapings and microscopic examination are required in this instance because the parasite is buried within the hair follicles and cannot be seen with the naked eye. Often, it only becomes apparent when antibiotics are given to the pet. Sarcoptic mage gets worse if the pet is given antibiotics. Food allergy sufferers respond positively.

www.rescueapet.co.uk

If all of these are ruled out and the pet’s flea, tick and worm prevention treatments are up to date then you can conclude that this is a case of atopic dermatitis or eczema.

Common Causes of Eczema The most common causes of eczema are: • Dustmite • Food • Pollen • Chemical sensitivity • Neurological or behavioural disorders (Cont on p24 ...

Biolife cont from p23 ... For the perennial sufferer, a holistic approach is recommended. Over 70% of itchy, scratchy pets are allergic to dustmite. Dustmite are ubiquitous in the modern home and present in the pet’s bed, soft furnishing and carpets. These pests can be prevented using Bio-Life HomeCleanse to spray the bedding and furnishings. FabriCleanse is recommended for washing bedding and cleaning carpets. A spray of AirCleanse once per week ensures you get rid of any particles in the air. This one is important because although it is the skin that is affected, the allergens in cats and dogs are actually inhaled. Dogs and cats that suffer from pollen reactions can be cleansed with PetalCleanse C or D when they come back indoors and

Animals in Need

AirCleanse can used to maintain a pollen free environment in the house. The foods that pets are allergic to can be difficult to identify but there are a plethora of hypoallergenic foods now on offer and your veterinary surgeon can recommend the right one for your pet. If they suffer from food allergies, it is important not to feed them snacks and titbits. Instead, use natural chews and bones from the butcher. All these preventatives can take time to work so to relieve symptoms in the short term, Bio-Life offer a range of chemical friendly toiletries to clean and treat spots and patches. These toiletries are paraben, SLS/SLES and fragrance free. Fragrances are among the most potent allergens you can find. Lastly, remember that your pet is an intelligent

and sociable animal and there is nothing worse for generating depraved behaviour than boredom. Plenty of company, regular walks and toys are as important to your pet as they are to your child!

Herbal answers with ...

Q

Daisy Price, Herbalist

I feed my dog a raw food diet and would like a supplement that can provide a good all round mix of vitamins and minerals and support overall health. Are there any herbs that you could suggest I use. Feeding a combination of Sea Kelp, Rosehip, Dandelion and Nettle can give good all round support to a raw diet. Sea Kelp is a great natural source of vitamins and minerals, containing Iodine, Calcium, Iron, Magnesium, Selenium, Zinc, Sulphur, Manganese, Potassium, Phosphorus and Vitamins A, B, B12, C, D and E. It is particularly good for improving the skin and coat. Rosehips are one of the richest, natural sources of vitamins C making them great for the

immune system. They also contain vitamin A, K, Riboflavin and thiamine. Nettle is often used as a tonic and to support the circulatory system. It is rich source of Iron, making it excellent for anaemia. It contains sodium, chlorophyl, vitamins C and A and is an excellent source of dietary fibre. Dandelion is a rich source of Potassium as well as Copper, Iron, Magnesium and vitamins A, B, C and D.

All herbs contain various vitamins and minerals and other combinations can be used. However Sea Kelp is probably one of the best for broad spectrum vitamins and minerals, although it is important not to over-feed as it is particularly rich in Iodine.

Q

Hi, My mare gets very difficult and stressy when she comes into season, sometimes to the point where I don't want to ride her, are there any herbs I can use to settle her down a bit? Herbs can be very beneficial for mares. The best herb for settling hormones is Vitex Agnus Castus also known as Chaste Berry, which has been used in both animals and humans for hundreds of years. I would try this alone to start with, giving it 4-6 weeks to

Daisy Price, Herbalist

see the full benefit. Agnus Castus alone is usually enough to settle things down and there is no point in giving her lots of things unnecessarily. However if you still find that she is a bit stressed herbs such as Chamomile, Vervain and Valerian can help to relieve stress and tension. Valerian is also an anti-spasmodic and will help with cramps that may cause her to be irritable. Agnus Castus shouldn't be fed to mares in foal or with foals at foot.

The team at ProtectaPet

Award-winning firm donates to animal charity Sarah Williams with rescued horse, Fly at HorseWorld

An inspirational visitor for HorseWorld An animal rescue centre in Bristol had a visit from an inspirational lady. Sarah Williams visited HorseWorld to present a cheque for £100 towards HorseWorld’s rescue work and Discovery Courses Sarah was born with Marfan Syndrome - a connective tissue disorder that affects the eyes, heart and feet, which has rendered her almost blind and makes walking difficult. She doesn’t let this stand in her way. Sarah founded a charity called ‘Smiling Eyes International’, a voluntary charity set up to help children and families in need through a variety of projects which has so far raised more than £40,000 for over 200 causes at home and abroad. She has spent over 20 years working with under-privileged children around the world and was touched when she read about HorseWorld’s rescued horses helping disadvantaged children who are outside of mainstream schooling through a program of equine facilitated learning. Horses are also very close to Sarah’s heart. ““I rode at 'Riding for the Disabled' for 7 years and competed in the Regional and National Blind Dressage Championships.” She said. “I have always loved horses and wanted to support the rescue work that HorseWorld do.” Sarah raises the money for various different charities by completing challenges. One of these challenges was to take up 20 hobbies and interests and give £100 to 20 animal charities. This isn’t the first time she has raised money for HorseWorld. In 2010, Sarah completed a tandem bike ride from Severn Beach to Chepstow Racecourse and raised £150 for HorseWorld. This money was used for rugs and medication for 3 retired and abandoned horses. “Sarah is a truly inspirational person.” Said HorseWorld’s Fundraising Manager, Stephen Poole. “She has travelled all over the world completing her challenges. She doesn’t let her disabilities hold her back. We were honoured to be one of the charities she chooses to support and very grateful for the donation.”

28 MARCH – 28 APRIL 2018 RESCUE A PET

ProtectaPet, internationally acclaimed designers of pet containment systems, has sponsored custom-made fencing in the cat section for Wood Green, The Animals Charity Godmanchester Centre in Cambridgeshire. Worth a significant £2,500, the donated fencing was kindly installed free of charge by ProtectaPet. The new fencing puts the finishing touch to a new summerhouse, allowing cats who need solitude or a safe space to relax and play to have an enclosed garden. Monika Maintz, cat section manager at Wood Green, The Animals Charity explains: “The summer house and garden are extremely beneficial for cats in our care that do not like other cats and need to be away from them. Cats are not usually sociable animals and dislike being in a cattery environment, especially breeds such as Bengals. By housing them in the summer

house for their stay at Wood Green we improve their welfare by making it less stressful. She continued: “The first resident to the house was Charlotte, an 11 year-old cat who was at the charity for 328 days. Charlotte was found in a vacant property after her owners had passed away and this left her understandably traumatised. The fencing allowed her to have access to the private garden and she was able to go outside for the first time in her 11 years and feel the grass on her paws.” Simon Davies, founder of ProtectaPet, adds, “All cats have different needs, they have unique personalities, we’re delighted to be able to support Wood Green and provide a safe territory for those cats that need some extra space, making their stay as stress free as possible.”

EASTER FUN WITH THE HAPPY HOOVES PONY CLUB AT THE MARE & FOAL SANCTUARY Devon’s Mare & Foal Sanctuary is back with its Happy Hooves Pony Club, chock full of activities for horse mad youngsters over the Easter holidays. The club’s pony sessions are for primary school age youngsters offering an introduction to practical pony care, including making hay nets, tack cleaning and grooming some of the charity’s fabulous – and cheeky - ponies. The next sessions are being held at the charity’s Coombe Park Visitor Centre near Totnes, TQ9 6LW on April 5th and 12th between 10am and 12pm. Sanctuary Education Manager Dawn Neil said: “We love these sessions because the children have such a great time getting involved in the care of our wonderful rescued ponies. “For any little ones mad about ponies it’s a wonderful introduction to life in a stable yard.

It’s also great fun to get some hands-on experience with something small enough to make your little one feel like a true equestrian.” There will also be hobby horse gymkhana games in the field or arena and arty fun in the form of horse shoe decorating indoors. The sessions cost £15 and include a free gift and certificate. Burns Pet Nutrition team (veterinary surgeon and founder of Burns Pet Nutrition, John Burns second in from left - front row)

Xena has built up a strong bond with her groom Lorraine Holmes

Xena Blossoms with Good Health and Happiness Xena has been a resident at World Horse Welfare’s Hall Farm Rescue and Rehoming Centre in Norfolk for 10 months and in this time she has grown in confidence, allowing her lovely personality and kind-nature to shine through Having been largely un-handled in her previous home where Xena was subjected to neglect along with a number of other horses, the progress she has made in such a relatively short space of time is testament to the hard work of her groom Lorraine Holmes and the rest of the team at Hall Farm. Lorraine and Xena have built up a strong bond, which is evident from how relaxed and comfortable Xena is with being handled by Lorraine. “Xena is such a gentle giant; she loves standing for a groom and a fuss. It is such a privilege for an animal that has been treated so badly to find it within themselves to trust you. I have developed a real soft spot for her and can’t wait to meet her foal when he or she arrives,” said Lorraine. With her rehabilitation and handling progressing well, Lorraine is working on gaining Xena’s confidence with having her feet picked up. She is happy to have all four of her feet picked up but still requires sedation to be attended to by the farrier. With lots of practice Xena is slowly but surely getting there but she does struggle to balance with the extra weight due to her pregnancy. To check her pregnancy is progressing well Xena is regularly visited by the vet, who is also monitoring a slight lameness issue in her right hind leg, which is believed to be due to her weight increasing to 744kg! 34

28 MARCH – 28 APRIL 2018 RESCUE A PET

As the centre awaits the birth of Xena’s foal, World Horse Welfare would like horse owners to stop and think before breeding a foal of their own. In the UK, there are far more horses and ponies than there are homes for them and every new horse or pony bred could potentially push another into a vulnerable welfare situation. World Horse Welfare had a record number of foals born from horses coming into the charity’s care in 2017 and many of those are now youngsters looking for a new home where they can continue their education. If you are interested in taking on a youngster then please visit World Horse Welfare’s website to find out more. Lifeforce Formula from Alltech is specially designed for breeding horses and horses in moderate activity by supporting their immune function. Additionally the supplement helps support the reproductive system of mares and stallions, while supporting fermentation of feeds and forages in the caecum, enabling your horse to extract the maximum nutrients from all feed sources. A 5kg tub of Lifeforce Formula retails at £90, for a three month supply.

Leading pet food company awarded prestigious award for commitment to community initiatives Burns Pet Nutrition, a family company in Wales that makes specialist foods designed for the health and wellbeing of pets, has won a coveted award from one of the UK’s biggest business associations. Burns won the Excellence in Community Relations award at the recent South Wales Chamber of Commerce Awards, held in City Hall, Cardiff, on Thursday 8th March. The award recognised Burns Pet Nutrition’s dedication to supporting its community initiatives, through its charitable arm – The Burns Pet Nutrition Foundation. The family company works tirelessly to support a wide variety of causes, including a variety of schemes which sit under The Burns Pet Nutrition Foundation. Of its many schemes, one is The Better Tomorrow Programme, which develops exciting new projects and partnerships that help to enhance the lives of disadvantaged people by offering practical recreational facilities and life skill opportunities. Additional schemes are Burns by Your Side - a specially developed reading-to-dogs scheme, which uses trained volunteers and their companion dogs to help children improve their reading skills and communicate more confidently – and Burns Charities of the Year, which allows the company to support multiple charities in need of support and funding. The charities Burns Pet Nutrition is supporting throughout 2018 are Forever Hounds Trust, Dogs for the Disabled and UK German Shepherd Rescue. Burns will be supporting these charities in several ways, such as supplying the charities with its pet food, providing nutritional advice by its team of animal nutritionists, as well as donating funds to the charities. The Swansea Bay Business Awards which took place earlier this year, also saw John Burns, veterinary surgeon and founder of Burns Pet Nutrition, win Lifetime Achievement Award, as well as Burns Pet Nutrition winning Manufacturer of the Year. John Burns comments: “The recent accolades achieved by Burns Pet Nutrition, highlights the hard work and dedication the entire Burns team contributes every day. “I am so proud of what we as a family and team have achieved over the years and would like to take this opportunity to thank them all, and our loyal customers. “This year is a big year for Burns – celebrating our 25 years’ anniversary, and having lots of exciting news soon to be announced. It’s not glamourous, but as dog owners we have to engage with poo on a very regular basis Firm, pick-up-able poo not only makes this aspect of our lives much easier to .. er... handle, it’s also a clear sign that, inside our pooch, things are working as they should be. It’s therefore of benefit to both us and our dogs, that we make their business our business (so to speak) and this often starts with some small dietary changes.

So, what is perfect poo?

A healthy, happy digestive system dispenses firm (but not bullet-hard), sausage shaped stools that hold their shape and are mid to dark(ish) brown. The kind of stool that responds well to the ‘stick & flick’ method of poo relocation. And if squished (should you be inclined to do so) has a consistency similar to that of Play Doh.

And what is less-than-perfect poo?

(We’re going to have to get a little graphic here, so please... brace yourself!) Soft, gloopy poop that requires delicate poo-bagging skills, is a sign that your dog may either have parasites (contrary to popular belief these are not always visible as rice/spaghetti looking bits in the poop) or that there might be something within your dog’s diet that the body isn’t too keen on. When the digestive system comes across something it doesn’t like it ‘rushes’ it through the GI tract before the body has had time to re-absorb much of the water – resulting in a sloppy deposit that's tricky to pick up. In extreme cases this can be full blown diarrhoea. Obviously, all dogs get the occasional bout of the runs, and providing it only happens very occasionally and for no more than 24 hours

www.rescueapet.co.uk

then it's generally nothing to worry about. Persistent upsets are a different matter however, and if a change of diet doesn’t clear things up pretty quickly, then a trip to your vets is necessary. Similarly, strange coloured stools (yellow, orange, red or black) or those that seem slimy or coated with a ‘gunk’ may indicate something more serious is going on and need to be discussed with your vet. So, whilst some dogs can cope with crayons, socks and six-week dead seagull without so much as a murmur, they can’t necessarily handle the everyday ingredients found in dog food. It seems a little bizarre, but it’s frequently the case. Intolerances often develop after repeated exposure to a particular foodstuff (which is why chicken & beef allergies are particularly widespread), but it can also happen for no discernible reason at all. By far, the most common trigger we come across is related to gluten (found in wheat/spelt, barley and rye) and glutenous type grains such a maize/corn. If these ingredients are in your dog’s food then they will be listed on the ingredients panel on the back of the bag/tin. They can also be listed under the umbrella term of ‘cereals’. Most of us never really look at this list but it isn’t as mystifying as we think. They work in a similar way to those found on human food – with the most plentiful ingredient first, the second most plentiful second etc. If a quick scan of your bag/tin reveals the words cereals, wheat, barley, prairie meal, maize or corn then it’s well worth trying a more gut-friendly recipe to see if matters improve. Hypo-allergenic recipes won’t contain the biggest offender – wheat – but they may contain some of the other ingredients we’ve mentioned.

The simplest way to ensure you’re choosing a recipe free from any of these potential culprits is to opt for one that says it’s ‘grain free’. Grain free recipes substitute all grains and cereals for vegetables, which most dogs find easier on the system. When you choose your grain free recipe it’s also worth trying a different/new flavour too – just in case the issue is protein related. It’s worth noting that just because the bag/tin says ‘duck flavour’ this doesn’t mean that it only contains duck – so again, check the ingredients panel for a more detailed picture and avoid umbrella terms such as ‘poultry meal’ or ‘animal derivatives’ as it’s impossible to know exactly what proteins are included here. Once things have settled down nicely, you can begin to slowly re-introduce the old protein(s) and/or gentler grains (such as rice and oats) to try to determine the exact triggers, if you wish to. Don’t forget all this extends to snacks and treats too, but there are so many grain free treats and chews available these days that your pooch won’t be missing out! If you’d like to discuss any aspect of your dog’s diet, please call our helpline on 01994 453713 – we’d be happy to help! Visit www.cifood.co.uk

Veterinary practice celebrates Women in Business & Science Scarsdale Vets marked International Women’s Day – 8 March 2018 Scarsdale Vets marked International Women’s Day on Thursday 8th March by celebrating the success of the women in its teams and inspiring the next generation of female professionals. Scarsdale Vets was founded over 70 years ago and has thrived to become a successful business in 21st century Britain. The team of over 300 people is more than 85% female. In addition to clinical roles at the veterinary practice, there are many business career opportunities with roles in everything from HR and Marketing to Finance and data analysts. Wendy Furness, a Partner at Scarsdale Vets says: “Scarsdale Vets represents a microcosm of how women’s roles could be in a world of gender equality in business. Here we have people in every role that you

can imagine, from client-facing roles such as client care advisors, vets and nurses, to people that make the business function happen, such as marketing and finance managers. We want women to be inspired to be who they want to be. There are many roles that some people still first think of as male dominated, such as surgeons and farm or equine vets. However, we at Scarsdale Vets are challenging assumptions like these and looking for opportunities to make all roles visible to women.” Importantly at Scarsdale Vets, there are women in senior and leadership positions, running the business units and heading up the business departments, and 6 out of 13 Partners at the practice are women. Furness adds: “Having women in leadership and senior roles is essential if women at the start of their

careers are to succeed. We can be there to inspire the next generation to strive for these positions, if that is what they want, and see that it is made possible. We can also stand up and be counted if and when bias based on gender is observed.” Over the past year there Scarsdale Vets has created many opportunities to foster women’s professional development within the business, from developing skills in leadership and management, to supporting further training and qualifications, as well as offering people graduate development, internship and residency programmes. There have been numerous successes across the spectrum last year with women gaining qualifications and passing exams in HR, Marketing and Finance, as well as in achieving clinical

qualifications, including multiple successes in clinical exams from nursing to specialist vet exams. To mark International Women’s Day, Scarsdale Vets will be filling their social media channels with positive images of women, working in the diverse roles within the practice, challenging stereotypes about the veterinary roles available to women, influencing others positively, and celebrating the successes of the women in their team.

PROTECT MANS’ BEST FRIEND FROM LUNGWORM Nematode treatment from BASF will help protect dogs from this devastating disease Slugs remain one of the most prolific pests in the garden, and their damage can extend far beyond destroying your flowers and vegetables. These slimy pests can also carry the dreaded lungworm parasite that can cause serious health problems in dogs and can even be fatal if not diagnosed and treated. Some dogs deliberately eat the parasites, but they can also be ingested from foraging in undergrowth, eating grass, carrying around outside toys such as balls and rubber bones and when the parasites have attached themselves to outside water and food bowls. They can also simply stick to dogs’ coats. In order to provide your dog with the safest of environments whilst in 38

the garden, it is vital to try and remove the threat of the lungworm parasite, and one of the most effective ways of doing this is removing slugs from the garden. Until now, most slug control methods, such as blue pellets, have been identified as being potentially harmful to dogs and other household pets. The biological nematodes used in Nemaslug, on the other hand, seek out and destroy slugs, and only slugs, and can be used safe in the knowledge that they will cause no harm to anything else in your garden, including your dog. In fact, nematodes are so safe they can even be kept in your own fridge. Also, unlike alternative pest control solutions, nematodes can be used as a preventative control, so even if you

28 MARCH – 28 APRIL 2018 RESCUE A PET

are lucky enough to have not seen any slugs yet, treating the garden to a dose of nematodes will keep the critters at bay before they become a real problem. “Lungworm can be a devastating disease for dogs. We believe that by using nematodes to protect your garden against slugs, you are also protecting your dogs from lungworm at the same time.” says Gavin Wood from BASF. “This biological pest control is fast and effective, and is simply watered on to plants and soil where slugs may be present.” TV Vet Marc Abraham, or ‘Marc the Vet’ as he is more commonly known, explains, “Lungworm relies greatly on slug and snail hosts in order to grow and develop, and it's from ingesting these (or even just licking their trails

or infected water from bowls left outside) that disease transmission may occur. “So the more contact our dogs have with infected slugs and snails, the more likely this often fatal disease is rapidly spread.”

■ All Nemasys products can be ordered online, with an entire season’s worth being ordered and sent out as and when needed. This means that all of your planning can be done now, and you can concentrate of planting and growing, safe in the knowledge that your pest control is taken care of. You will need the space to build suitable accommodation and permission from your local authority to run your establishment legally. Additionally, your life will be dictated by early mornings, hard physical work, difficulty in planning holidays and having a social life. If you love dogs or cats, however, and want to work from home this could be a career choice for you. The first thing you’ll need is money.

28 MARCH – 28 APRIL 2018 RESCUE A PET

That and a business plan. The latter is a good thing to do even if you don’t need it to take to the bank for a loan. If you don’t know where you are going, you can’t get lost and even businesses need a strong sense of what they are and what they want to achieve so it’s worth writing up a plan. Without one, your business will be like a ship without a rudder. You’re unlikely to ‘get rich quick’ running a cattery or boarding kennel so perhaps consider if you’re able to have a separate income or indeed if you’re at a stage in life when you have less financial commitments. If you are building a cattery or kennel from scratch, you must contact your local authority. Not only are there planning issues but also the matter of business rates, operating licences and any other obligations. Plus you need to consider your neighbours. Many other matters need to be taken into consideration such as fencing materials must be secure and safe; sleeping areas must be insulated to prevent extremes of temperature; the construction must be such that the security of the animal is ensured; only products which are not toxic to cats and dogs may be used; all internal surfaces used in the construction of walls, floors, partitions, doors and door frames must be durable, smooth and waterproof. It’s more than the simple task of screwing together a few runs… Catteries and boarding kennels are 365 days a year jobs. The times when others are taking holidays (the school summer holidays and Christmas for example) are when you will be at your busiest. You have to be available 24 hours a day in case an animal needs you (no doing breakfast and going off to work for the day then coming back at teatime). You’ll start your days early in all weathers and your last check-up will

be late at night. If you have young children or other dependents who will also need your time, you need to seriously weigh up whether you will be able to meet all your obligations. You also need stamina and a reasonable level of fitness. Businesses need customers, and catteries / kennels often rely on repeat business. It’s really only a good idea to run a cattery or boarding kennel if you love the animals in questions, as the owners will pick up on your genuine interest. If they think you love their pet, they will bring it back. You’ll also need to be professional and need to run efficiently with accurate daily records (very important if an animal is taken ill or there is an outbreak of illness). In today’s modern world, marketing communications are very important so your customers will often expect you to have a Facebook page and a regularly updated website. You will require a licence from your local authority under the terms of The Animal Boarding Establishment Act 1963. This is issued to the owner of the business themselves, not the business, so this would also be the case if you took over an establishment from someone else. A fee will be required for your application. Other things you need to consider are insurance; what to charge (do your research); checking that all residents are fully vaccinated. If you intend to have staff, you need to have employers’ liability insurance, toilet facilities and first aid equipment. You staff may be advised to be vaccinated against tetanus. If this long list hasn’t put you off, then you will no doubt really enjoy running a cattery or boarding kennel. For every piece of paperwork or hour spent doing the accounts, you’ll see many lovely pets who will grow to know you and share their love with you. And what could be nicer on Christmas morning than getting up and seeing numerous furry faces waiting for a special festive cuddle? For some cattery or boarding kennel owners, their residents will simply become part of the family. ■ For more advice, visit www.pet-owners.co.uk www.rescueapet.co.uk

Pens for Your Pets

Established by Idris McFarland in 1994, Penthouse Products Ltd, thrive today manufacturing and supplying High Quality, Easy to clean, Pens for Pets! Their customer’s include Rescue Centres, Veterinary Surgeries, Catteries and Private Cat, Dog and Small animal owners. The original idea was that, if a cat with a severe and dangerous disease had been accommodated in the pen, then the pen could be sterilised and/or steam cleaned and it would be safe to use again. Theoretically, any pen made using absorbent material, such as wood, would have to be burnt. The frame is made from the same material that is used for replacement plastic windows (UV stabilised UPVC). The flooring and shelf tops are made from slightly embossed polypropylene sheet. This is often used to line butchers cold stores which have to be clean and sterile. Originally, the mesh was galvanised steel but some years ago, it was changed to stainless steel. This has an extremely long life and all the screws are also stainless steel. There are 12 different pen designs and most of the designs come in three different sizes.

42

28 MARCH – 28 APRIL 2018 RESCUE A PET

Penthouse Products is prepared to modify any of the pens to suit a customer’s special requirements. This may be to fit into an alcove or go under a shelf. Penthouse has sold pens all over the world, Australia, USA and most European countries although the UK is by far the main market. The largest single order they have ever had was for 30 pens to go to a vet in Gibraltar.

A four-month-old kitten, who was recently found abandoned all alone with severely matted hair in North West London, is now on the mend The young black and white kitten, named Minikeba, was discovered by a member of the public in a garden and was immediately brought into London-based animal welfare charity, Mayhew, as they were worried about his condition. Mayhew’s Animal Welfare Officer, AJ Ford, said: “Minikeba was found frightened and in a state by a concerned member of the public. He was by himself with no other siblings or mum nearby. “Minikeba’s fur was so matted that it was pulling painfully on the sensitive skin on his belly and around his face and bottom. He had stained paws, which we think must have been caused by him standing in his own urine and mess. “Poor Minikeba also didn’t know how to play properly or what to do with the toys we provided him with. “We can’t imagine how terrifying it must have been for Minikeba to be 44

left like that and we wish whoever had abandoned him had called us first. At Mayhew we are dedicated to helping people in crisis situations. We do not judge and we are here to assist and advise on the best course of action for the animal, no matter what the problem is.” Minikeba was quickly seen to by Mayhew’s Vet Team at their on-site Community Vet Clinic and was given a thorough health check. Mayhew’s Vet, Dr. Emma Robinson, said: “When Minikeba first arrived at Mayhew he had very matted hair, which we had to clip and comb out. “He also had diarrhoea, which was probably due to a combination of parasites, a poor diet and scavenging. We gave him a vaccination and flea and worming treatment. “Despite the discomfort he must have been in, he has been so loving and has an extremely sweet nature.” After receiving medical attention and

care from Mayhew’s Vet Team and love and socialisation from their Cattery Team, Minikeba has learnt how to play with his toys and will soon be back to good health in no time. As soon as Mayhew’s Vet Team are satisfied Minikeba has received the medical attention he needs and has been fully vaccinated and neutered,

he will be ready to find a new home and his happily ever after.

Supplying Catteries and Kennels for over 40 years

Manufacturing Catteries is what we do We don’t build sheds, or garden furniture, we design and build premium bespoke living accommodation for cats. This is a new era for animal housing. Expectations have risen dramatically over the last 5 years meaning customers want larger, lighter, luxurious living spaces for their beloved animals and what better way to ease the wave of guilt you might feel when leaving home watched by two large, sad eyes, than to know your furry friend will be enjoying five star luxury in your absence. Each individual cat house or run is made from scratch by the team of expert joiners in our factory near Bristol. Some weeks we are busy manufacturing enormous 30 pen catteries ready to be delivered and installed in Scotland, other days we will be putting together a bespoke garden run for a cat lover a couple of miles away. Whatever we are doing, we are doing it with the love, care and attention to detail that people have come to know and expect from a Lindee Lu building.

Whether you foster, breed or have been thinking about running a little business from home with a boarding cattery, we are here to help you make your dreams a reality. Why not give us a call for a chat? We don’t hard sell, we don’t insist you buy a minimum number of pens and it doesn’t matter how large or small your project is. She would be best suited to a home where she will be the only rabbit as she is not too keen on her rabbit companions.

Simon has not been handled very much and he would prefer to spend all his days hopping about rather than being cuddled.

Thumper would best suit a quiet new home where she can be given the time needed to come out of her shell.

Mayhew’s Dog Adoption Officer, Lisa Guiney, said: “We had a call from the owner who informed us that the pups were an accidental litter and that they were no longer in a position to care for them. “At Mayhew we do get a number of unwanted litters that are brought into us due to owners not getting their pets neutered. Neutering not helps reduce the number of unwanted pets ending up in rescue shelters, but it can also help improve your pet’s

health by heavily reducing their chances of developing certain cancers or diseases. “We provide low-cost neutering at our Community Vet Clinic and we also offer free neutering for bull breed dogs that are associated with overbreeding. “At Mayhew we do not judge and we are here to assist and advise on the best course of action for the animal, no matter what the problem is.” All the puppies were given a bath by Mayhew’s Kennels Team and a thorough health check by their Vet Team. They were all in a good overall condition and had no other health concerns. The pups were given flea

Mayhew team with the six Saluki cross puppies

and worm treatment and were later fully vaccinated and neutered. As soon as the puppies receive the medical care and attention they need, they will be ready for adoption. Mayhew’s Dog Adoption Officer, Lisa Guiney, added: “They have different personalities – some are more confident and playful than others, but they are all adorable and just looking for a safe new place that they can call home. “We are looking for adopters who have plenty of time on their hands to continue with their training and socialisation, so that they can all grow up to be well-behaved adult dogs.” If you are interested in adopting any dogs in Mayhew’s care, please

visit www.themayhew.org or call 020 8962 8000. Mayhew offer low-cost neutering at their Community Vet Clinic from Mondays to Fridays. Please call 020 8962 8017 or email vetclinic@mayhewanimalhome.org to make an appointment, check prices or ask for further information.

■ Mayhew’s Animal Welfare Officers and Vet Team respond to hundreds of animals in need and provide ongoing support to carers and pet owners in vulnerable situations. Find out more about their work by visiting www.themayhew.org and please consider a donation to help them help even more animals.

Dora will be looking for a home at the middle of september once her kittens are grown up.

Cherry came to us as a stray, she is timid but if she can find a quiet home her confidence will grow.

She is looking for someone that can understand what she needs is time and patience.

She loves Cuddles, fun and playing. Her best friend is Socks and she would like to find a home with her. Socks loves attention on her own terms. She loves rolling in the sun and playing Hide and seek in boxes with Autumn.

He is a friendly boy that just needs a home to call his own. Stephen would like an adult only home.

He likes other cats and has come from a rural home so is not used to traffic.

Spot at the moment is a little timid but with time and patience he will come around.

She will need a home where she has eventual access to the outdoors once she has settled.

Fluffy is going to be a cat who needs to be the only pet in the household.

He would just love an nice retirement home with a comfy chair or sofa to curl up on.

He would be best suited to a home with older children, who can give him a little time to settle to his new environment.

Tara and Spike will need to be rehomed together. Due to their background they will need a nice quite home with no children and no other pets. They will need to stay as indoor only cats as that is all they have ever known. They will need a little time to settle.

An experienced family would be ideal, who can understand her personality.

will certainly want a lap and a nice comfy bed to curl up on back at home.

He enjoys a good fuss, but is not a cat that enjoys constant attention – it all gets a bit too much for him.

Both massively affectionate family cats. They have been used to living with children of 8 years plus and are very happy and confident with children of this age. They enjoy access to a safe and interesting outside space where they can explore and possibly do a little bit of hunting.

He has a really cheeky side to him too, and loves to be a little bit naughty!

She is a lovely little thing, and, once she knows you, hugely affectionate.

Petal enjoys the choice of going outside, but generally tends to be more of a home bird

Morris M4

She does not seem to mind being left alone so may make a good companion to a ridden horse.

She is now very friendly and good to handle but still requires an experienced person to help continue her education.

She is good to handle but is a still a typical youngster and has only received basic handling.

However she still does not like being overly handled so would not be suitable for someone looking to fuss and pamper their pony!

She would make an ideal family pet but does need boundaries and will require a confident handler.

She has a lovely nature and is easy to care for. She gets on well with other mares and can live out 24/7.

He is easy to care for being able to live out 24/7 or be stabled if needed but is still a little nervous and lacks confidence.

Domino is a chilled chap who loves attention. He is a friendly boy.

This beautiful horse has been through so much in his short life.

Vienna is a lovely, kind mare but she can be quite shy.
