Poetry is a part of the urban setting in American history and culture; it is the precursor to rap and hip-hop in popular culture. Poetry is literary freedom, a poems meaning may be interpreted differently with each reader, like the plethora of shapes in a kaleidoscope. The village elders from the 18th to the 21st centuries were social and political consciousness-raising poets, all deceased, but whose legacy lives and breathes like an eternal flame. Empress Phillis Wheately, born in 1753 in Senegal, West Africa; stolen from her homeland, brought to America and sold into slavery. She rose above her lowly status to become the first African American poet to publish a book. America’s premier African American poet of the late 1800s and early 1900s, Paul Laurence Dunbar, from my hometown Dayton, Ohio, transcribed poems in black dialect.

RHYMES AND RHYTHMS PROSE AND VERSE ODES AND LYRICS

Poet Langston Hughes a social activist was the originator of a new literary genre known as jazz poetry. James Weldon Johnson’s 1899 poem became the hallmark for the Negro National Anthem, Lift Every Voice and Sing.

She has instructed courses in Cincinnati, OH, Madison, WI, and Topeka, KS. In addition, she designed, developed and implemented a criminal justice degree program in Nairobi, Kenya at the United States International University which is said to be one of the first criminal justice bachelor’s program in all of East Africa. Tambura’s first published book, A Gift for Daddy Gone Wrong! introduces children to the consequences of deviant behaviors and criminal justice institutions.

RHYMES AND RHYTHMS PROSE AND VERSE ODES AND LYRICS

Tambura wrote lyrics to a song in 1959 which she recorded at the age of eleven. She started journaling at the age of 13 when her mother gave her a five-year diary. Her writings evolved into a series of poems from 1980 to 1998; saved and assembled by 2000. She has written several poems in the 21st century. Her first published poem, My African Violet, appeared in Creative Voices in 2015, by Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at the University of Cincinnati.

Poet revolutionaries of the 20th and 21st century Maya Angelou was an astounding award winning poet. Gwendolyn Brooks was the first African American poet to win the Pulitzer Prize. She was a Poet Laureate, Consultant to the United States Library of Congress.

Drum Beats is a debut of her collection of poems written across the span of three decades. The poems express a myriad of experiences and emotions that are serious and sensitive, that reflect pain and growth, that are controversial and contradicting, and that express political and social incorrectness. There are descriptions and confessions that are sensuous, lewd and lascivious, and that reflect knowledge and multiple intelligences as well as poems that are humorous. Tambura believes the poems still have an appeal and an allure that proves relevant in today’s society. Each poem has an epigraph that describes the inspiration and setting. Forthcoming books from Tambura include, Transportation in Kenya: A Social Anthology of Motion, Movement and Mobility, a coffee table book. Shout: An Epistolary Through Journaling, an autobiography; and The Reveres’: Sociogenealogy, based on family social history and genealogy. In addition to writing, Tambura is a philatelic, her subjects are African and African American stamps. She enjoys using her hands to create arts and crafts. Tambura resides HAND HELD RATTLE DRUM near the Cincinnati area close to her daughter, sonKENYA, EAST AFRICA in-law and two endearing granddaughters.

May the drums beat and reverberate in memorial for our village elders, literary heroes and sheroes of the spoken word. TAMTAM DRUM BAMILEKE ETHNIC GROUP CAMEROON, CENTRAL AFRICA
