Design Portfolio
Profile: I am a thoughtful and adaptable designer, with a love for getting involved in design thinking and making. I approach a brief with the ‘big picture’ in mind, understanding the roots of an idea and then enjoy the process of building it up creatively. I am inspired by multidisciplinary designers such as John Pawson and Pearson Lloyd. I admire architectural work that is elaborate and skilful, something I realised when viewing the Roman/Georgian buildings of Bath for the first time. These influences have contributed to my taste.

Tiredness Epidemic Rest Research “Rest doesn’t just restore mental and physical energy, but when taken in the right ways, can stimulate innovative thinking and sustain creative lives.” Alex S Pang (Ph.D) a Historian of Science. With more than 69% of workers feeling fatigued in their workplace, the affects of fatigue ripple into the effectiveness of a work, and our wider lives. My aim is to reduce the problem of fatigue by increasing the ability to rest in a public space.

Context Through a varied analysis of the contexts I could place Headspace in, I came to conclude that it had the potential to find in a number of environments, expanding the market. Three different contexts were specified in my market analysis.

Features
Rotating Screen The rotating privacy screen is the main feature present in the design. To view in motion, click the image to the left in order to open the online window. The innovative screen allows for solitude and privacy. The rotation also enables varying degrees of seclusion for the user. This feature increasingly became more relevant in the dilemma of COVID.

Recharging Headspace provides recharging for the body and devices, with an inbuilt plug for laptops and charges, as well as a tray for placing drinks or your device.
Comfort The footrest area was subsequently useful for storing belongings that could not fit beside you, but were vital for safe keeping whilst resting.

Assembly Method One of the USP’s of the INSTRMNTs purchasing experience is the assembly process. I wanted to combine this process with the aesthetics language of Muller Van Severen marble benches. The result was a clean cut finish, minimal, but interactive.

Wood Techniques Wood turning blanks is an effective and efficient way of utilising trees with only a small area of usefulness. This was one of the aspects which informed my brief.
Commission The project was in union with Where Next Design, who designs and builds retreats in areas of natural beauty and woodland.
Aim To create a lighting system that both envelopes a space for dwelling inside, and alternatively excites the user to connect with the environment around them. The multi-purpose light will be rooted in honest materials and functionality.
Light To My Path Bloom is a hand-held light which excites exploration for those seeking a tool to guide them out into nature.

Internship
Manufacture Having hands-on experience in the workshop enabled me to see how furniture and lighting really comes together, revealing all that lies behind the process of production. From ordering components, delivery, preparation, tolerances, assembly and packaging.
Social Media Being the curator of social media gave a unique insight into company relations and promotions, seeing how the dynamic between the users of social media and the company can work, with social media being a valuable tool for businesses, this was insightful. Also allowing me to be creative with advertising new designs they were releasing,
Spaces
Interior Design This was new territory for me, but I enjoyed the process of culminating different elements to make an overall theme. Given my experience in the workshop, I had a better idea of the practical issues manufacture could come across.
Trade Show Design The following stall was designed for London Coffee Festival. The overall process led me to consider how to represent the brand in the limited space, whilst giving the team the adequate means to promote the company verbally.
Touch Points Having objects to interact with allowed for further conversation and a memorable touch point. Also, it helps divert attention making the inquirer more comfortable.
