HEAD COACH

HEAD Coach • Ninth SEASON UniverSIty of Louisville, ’98

Heading into his ninth season at the helm of the Jacksonville State volleyball program, Rick Nold has taken the Gamecocks on a rewarding ride while producing one of the region’s best programs. The longest tenured coach in JSU’s Division I volleyball history, Nold has guided JSU to the top of the Ohio Valley Conference. His run has seen the Gamecocks reach new heights, including three of the last five Ohio Valley Conference Regular Season Titles, three OVC Tournament titles and the school’s first three trips to the NCAA Tournament. Nold, a three-time conference Coach of the Year, and his Gamecocks are in the midst of the most dominant stretch in school history, having won either the Ohio Valley Conference Regular Season or Tournament titles in four of the past five seasons. They took their success to another level in 2009, defeating Florida A&M in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, the program’s first win on that stage.

That tournament win punctuated a memorable season that saw the Gamecocks post a 27-8 record, the most wins in program history, and a 17-1 mark in OVC play. After rolling to the regular-season crown and sweeping the league’s tourney, JSU earned the No. 2 seed in the Tallahassee, Fla., Regional. Nold’s team’s impressive run earned him his second OVC Coach of the Year honor in four seasons, as well as Midwest Region Coach of the Year honors by the AVCA. Senior Brittney Whitten and junior Caitlin Vorbeck each earned First Team All-OVC honors, while the freshman duo of Jen Meyer and Alyx Schulte received All-Newcomer accolades. The Gamecocks claimed back-to-back OVC regular-season crowns in 2006 and 2007, a feat that earned them the right to host the conference tournament in each campaign. The recent run includes the most dominant season in school history, a 2006 campaign that saw his team finish in the top 60 in the RPI and rattle off a 24-5 record that included a perfect 18-0 record against OVC foes. The Gamecocks swept all but one of those 18 matches and, at one time, had a streak of 49 consecutive games won, the longest active streak in the nation. Just the third head coach in the program’s history, Nold took over a team in 2002 that was coming off of four consecutive losing seasons and back-to-back 11-17 efforts. Since joining the Gamecocks, the Louisville, Ky., native has compiled a 156-84 record and has taken a program that had just one Division I postseason appearance before his arrival to postseason play in seven of his eight seasons, including berths in the 2005, 2006 and 2009 NCAA Tournaments, the only three in program history. A 1998 graduate of the University of Louisville, Nold has made JSU’s transition into the OVC a more than enjoyable one both on and off the court. His teams have combined for a 91-31 record in OVC games and have advanced to at least the semifinals of the OVC Championship in five of the past six seasons. His student-athletes have also excelled in the classroom. Since joining the OVC in 2003, JSU has had 46 volleyball players named to the Commissioner’s Honor Roll, eight OVC Academic Medal of Honor winners, one Academic All-American and a two-time OVC Female Athlete of the Year in Abbey Breit. In the Gamecocks’ six seasons in the OVC, they boast the best conference winning percentage of any team in the history of the OVC. Nold’s teams have also won a remarkable 71 percent of their OVC matches, also the highest in the history of the league, a stat that has placed the Gamecocks in the top three seeds in the OVC Tournament in each of their first five years in the league. Nold’s teams have consistently had the highest GPA among JSU’s 16 varsity sports since he joined the Gamecocks in 2002. In 2005-06, his team held a 3.36 cumulative team GPA and eight players with a 3.25 of higher. In 2004-05, the Jax State Volleyball team had 10 of 12 players with a 3.3 GPA or higher and had five with a 4.0 for a cumulative GPA of 3.65. His 2008 squad boasted a 3.6 grade point average, while the 2009 crew won the program’s third-straight AVCA Team Academic Award. In 2007, the Gamecocks rode the back of senior Abbey Breit’s encore performance in a Gamecock jersey. Breit became the first player in OVC history to win the league’s Player of the Year Award three times when she earned the honor at season’s end. She also became just the second player in league history to earn First Team All-OVC honors in

THE NOLD FILE

The 2006 season began with a tournament title at the University of Louisville that included a 3-2 season-opening win over the No. 12 Cardinals and rolled from there. Led by Breit, a First Team All-American by Collegiate Volleyball Update and the OVC Offensive Player of the Year for the second-straight season, JSU rolled to just the seventh undefeated league record the OVC has ever seen, earning the Gamecocks their first-ever OVC regular season crown and the right to host the OVC Tournament. Nold earned OVC Coach of the Year honors before his squad swept through the tourney as they did 21 of their 29 matches throughout the season. Senior setter Emily Withers set the school’s career assists record en route to receiving Honorable Mention All-America honors with Breit, while Freshman Brittney Whitten was named the OVC’s Freshman of the Year. The 24-5 mark they finished the year with was highlighted by a 16-0 OVC mark and led to their second-straight OVC Tourney title and the second berth in the NCAA Tournament in as many seasons. The Gamecocks traveled to Knoxville, Tenn. For the second time and lost their first-round matchup with No. 14 San Diego. In 2005, JSU had its winningest OVC season to that point with a 19-11 overall record and a 13-3 league mark but placed third in the regular season, only to roll through an OVC Tournament that culminated with an impressive 3-2 win over Eastern Kentucky in the final on ESPNU, the school’s firstever nationally televised match. Led by the Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Year and Honorable Mention All-American Abbey Breit, JSU won

10 in a row to finish the season, win the league tourney and earn a date with Tennessee in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. In 2004, the Gamecocks’ success in the OVC continued as Nold’s third season saw his second straight 20-win campaign. JSU finished 21-9 and 10-6 in the OVC, good enough for third place in the final standings. Led by firstteam All-OVC performers Shari Weyer and Abbey Breit, the Gamecocks rewrote the school’s record books, breaking seven team single-season records, including kills, kills per game, attacks per game, assists, assists per game, digs per game and block assists. In 2003, Nold’s Gamecocks made an immediate splash in their first season in the OVC, finishing 23-8 and 12-4 in the league, JSU’s first winning season since 1997. Led by OVC Player of the Year Christina Cary and Weyer, the league’s Freshman of the Year, Jax State rolled into the semifinals of the tournament before falling to eventual champion Murray State.

four seasons and was just the third player to be named the OVC’s Female Athlete of the Year in back-to-back seasons. Breit and the Gamecocks claimed the league’s regular season title for the second-straight season after posting an 18-10 record and a 15-5 mark in league play. They would fall to eventual tournament champion Tennessee State in the semifinals of the OVC Tournament, which was held in JSU’s Pete Mathews Coliseum. Breit, who also earned all-region honors and led three players on the All-OVC squads, also became the program’s first First-Team Academic All-American. Senior Rebekah Nichols joined Breit on the All-OVC First Team, while freshman setter Brooke Schumacher was an All-Newcomer selection.

In his first season at JSU, Nold led the Gamecocks to a 14-14 record and earned A-Sun Coach of the Year honors in JSU’s eighth and final season in the conference. A 7-4 conference record was good enough to send the Gamecocks to the A-Sun Tournament for just the second time since joining the league in 1995. Nold came to Jacksonville State from his alma mater, where he spent six years on the Cardinals’ staff, the last four as a full-time assistant whose duties included recruiting coordinator. On coach Leonid Yelin’s staff, Nold ran the Cardinals’ volleyball camps, as well as assisted in practice and scouting. During his time at Louisville, the Cardinals won four Conference USA titles and advanced to the NCAA Tournament five times, advancing to the Sweet 16 in 1996 and 1998. Also during that time, he was the head coach of the 16-and-under and 18-and-under teams for the Kentucky Indiana Volleyball Academy in Louisville, where he coached teams that won the 1996, 1997, 1998 and 1999 AAU National Championships. His teams also earned Top 5 finishes at the USA Volleyball National Championships in 1997, 1998, 2000 and 2001. He also served as president of the Cheaha Juniors Volleyball Club program from 2002-03. Nold began his coaching career as an assistant at Assumption High School in his hometown, where he helped the girls’ varsity squad to three state championships and a 137-9 overall record before joining the University of Louisville staff in 1996. Nold also served as an intern with USA Volleyball, where he assisted the women’s national team in preparations for the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta. Nold received a bachelor’s degree from Louisville in the spring of 1998 in Sports Administration. He is a member of the American Volleyball Coaches Association, the Association of Volleyball Professionals and USA Volleyball Impact Certified Coach. He also serves on the All-Region and All-America selections committees and will be a voter in the USA Today/CSTV Top 25 Coaches Poll for the fourth-straight year.

COACHING  S TAFF

Abby Beam ASSISTANT Coach THIRD  SEASON • Georgia Tech, ‘07 Abby Beam is entering her third season as an assistant coach on Rick Nold’s staff after being hired in April of 2008.

Beam joined the Gamecocks after spending the previous five years in Atlanta, where she spent four seasons as a defensive specialist and libero at Georgia Tech and the fifth year as a head coach at the A5 Volleyball Club. She replaced Kristi Griffin, who left JSU after four seasons as Nold’s top assistant.

“We are really excited about adding someone with Abby’s background,” Nold said. “She comes from a very successful program and has been a part of several championships during her career. One of the things we were looking for in an assistant is a personality that will allow them to help carry on our program’s championship tradition, as well as help push us farther into the NCAA Tournament. We are excited about getting Abby involved with our team and the day-to-day operations of our program.” A native of Vandalia, Ohio, Beam was the head coach of one of A5’s 16 and under volleyball teams, a capacity she served in since between finishing her Tech career and joining the Gamecocks. Her team opened the 2008 schedule with three straight top-three finishes, including a Silver Championship at the Impact Tournament in Nashville to open the season.

Abby’s experience also includes several duties during her time at Georgia Tech. She served as an instructor at the Yellow Jackets’ camp for four years, and in 2006 she guided her team to the camp tournament championship that featured 22 teams. She has also been involved with other camps, including the Calvert High School Team Camp in

Tiffin, Ohio, for which she served as director in 2004.

“I am extremely excited to be joining the Jacksonville State Volleyball program,” Beam said. “I have heard only good things about Coach Nold and I am thankful for the opportunity to coach with him. I look forward to working with Coach Nold and such a great group of athletes to keep the Gamecock volleyball program among the best in the Ohio Valley Conference and the region.”

Beam was a versatile part of the Yellow Jackets’ program during her four years as a player. She signed with Georgia Tech as a setter out of VandaliaButler High School after being named a “Fab 50” recruit by Volleyball Magazine. She also played at the rightside hitter and defensive specialist spots for the Yellow Jackets before finishing her career as the team’s libero. As a senior in 2006, she recorded 508 digs, which is the thirdhighest total in a season in Tech history. She also ranks seventh in the school’s career record book with 2.86 digs per game over her four-year career. In her four seasons with the Yellow Jackets, Beam helped her team to three seasons with 20 or more wins, including back-to-back Atlantic Coast Conference titles and a combined 61-11 record in 2003 and 2004.

Beam joined a JSU program that had won either the Ohio Valley Conference’s regular-season or tournament title in each of the previous three seasons. The Gamecocks shared the regular-season crown in 2007 after making the program’s first-ever appearances in the NCAA Tournament in 2005 and 2006.

She helped continue that run in her second season, when she helped guide the Gamecocks to the OVC Regular Season and Tournament titles and the program’s first NCAA Tournament win in the first round of the Tallahassee, Fla., Regional against Florida A&M. The historic win capped a 27-8 season for JSU, the most wins in a season in school history, and a 17-1 mark in OVC play. Beam, formerly Abby Showers, married Tim Beam of Section, Ala., in the summer of 2010.

Ohio Valley Conference title.

Beasley saw action in all but one match as a senior in 2009 and averaged 1.58 digs per set in helping JSU to a 17-1 mark in OVC play and the school’s third OVC Tournament Title in five seasons. Beasley and JSU advanced to the NCAA Tournament as a No. 2 seed in Tallahassee, Fla., where they defeated Florida A&M in the first round, 3-2, the program’s first ever NCAA Tournament win.

2010 Media Guide | THE OVC

THE OHIO VALLEY CONFERENCE Entering its 61st year, the Ohio Valley Conference continues to build on the success that has made it the nation’s eighth-oldest NCAA Division I conference. In 2008, for only the second time in the past decade, the Conference expanded by adding Southern Illinois University Edwardsville as the league’s 11th member. The move expanded the OVC’s geographical footprint to the St. Louis market and marked the first change in membership since expanding to the state of Alabama (Jacksonville State, Samford) in 2003. The OVC’s proud past dates back to 1948, but seeds for the new league were actually planted in 1941. It was then that Roy Stewart, the athletics director at Murray State, Charles (Turkey) Hughes, the athletics director at Eastern Kentucky, and Kelly Thompson, the public relations director at Western Kentucky, first broached the idea of forming a new conference. Discussions were put on hold by World War II, but reemerged Feb. 27-28, 1948 at the Kentucky Hotel in Louisville as the three original institutions combined with Morehead State, Louisville and Evansville to form the OVC.

36

The vision of leadership demonstrated by the Founding Fathers in 1948 remains alive today as the Ohio Valley Conference prepares for the future. One example is in regard to the current trend in collegiate athletics administration for increased involvement of university presidents in setting policies and making rules. The presidents of OVC institutions, however, have always governed the Conference, long before presidential governance became a national theme.

Austin Peay State University, Eastern Illinois University, Jacksonville State University, Southeast Missouri State University, Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, Tennessee State University, Tennessee Technological University and the University of Tennessee at Martin.

The Ohio Valley Conference sponsors the following sports: baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, tennis and track for men, and basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, softball, tennis, track and volleyball for women. In addition, the OVC also sponsors the combined men’s and women’s sport of rifle.

Near Atlanta, Near Birmingham, Near Perfect!

Tucked into the rolling foothills of the Appalachian mountain range in Northeast Alabama, Calhoun County is a growing business center, yet still evokes an atmosphere of small-town America. We are a tranquil community with a fabulous climate of four distinctive seasons, full bloom summers, and brilliantly colored falls. In every direction there are tree-covered mountains, deep canyons, lush valleys, and underground springs. And yet, if you begin to yearn for big city life, we are only 60 miles from Birmingham, and 90 miles from Atlanta. A surprising variety of experiences await you in Calhoun County. The climate here allows for year round golf, tennis, hiking, or any activity you may enjoy in the great outdoors. Although our slogan reads, near Atlanta…near Birmingham…near Perfect, our citizens will tell you that the commitment to caring for others combined with a strong work ethic and community spirit makes “Calhoun County…the perfect” place to live.

We have enjoyed post-season competition in many of our sports, which brings national exposure and prestige to our University. As a matter of fact, we have won 12 more OVC titles than any other school in the Conference since 2003. “Our student-athletes excel, not only on the fields of competition, but also in the classroom,” added Meehan. “I’m proud to say that we have more than 130 of our student-athletes with a 3.0 grade point average or higher.” In 2011 and beyond, Dr. Meehan hopes to more accurately accomplish the institution’s mission, which means integrating traditional academic programs with careeroriented programs for the students of Alabama. The History From modest beginnings, Jacksonville State University has evolved into the educational center of Northeast Alabama. The Alabama Legislature in the 1882-83 session created a state normal school when Governor Edward O’Neal signed into law a bill creating the school on February 22, 1883. Jacksonville State Normal School acquired the facilities and equipment of Calhoun College, consisting of 12 acres of land and a two-story brick building. The Board of Directors elected James G. Ryals, Jr., as the first president. The school opened with three instructors: W. J. Borden, Mathematics; Eliza A. Bowen, English; and Ida J. Woodward, primary department. As stipulated in the establishing act, the Normal School administered a preparatory school for children of the town and surrounding areas. At the end of the first year, on August 15, 1884, William Mark Hames, President of the Board of Directors, reported that funds totaling $4,751.25 had been received, including $2,500 from the state; that 25 students were enrolled in the normal school; and that 222 were in the preparatory school. The Normal School remained in operation until 1930, when it became Jacksonville State Teachers College. Five years later, the College earned regional accreditation from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. The name again changed to Jacksonville State College in 1957

when the first graduate program—the master’s degree in elementary education—was created. On August 2, 1966, the Legislature authorized the State Board of Education to elevate the College to university status. On August 17, 1967, the Legislature established an independent Board of Trustees for the University and divested jurisdiction from the State Board of Education.

Jacksonville State University has been served by 11 presidents: James G. Ryals, Jr. (1883-85), J. Harris Chappell (1885-86), Carleton Bartlett Gibson (1886-92), J. B. Jarrett (1892-93), Jacob Forney IV (1893-99), Clarence William Daugette (1899-1942), Houston Cole (1942-71), Ernest Stone (1971-81), Theron E. Montgomery (1981-86), Harold J. McGee (1986-99), and William A. Meehan (1999-present). Jacksonville State University has developed into a modern regional university serving Northeast Alabama on a 392-acre campus with 63 buildings. In addition, the University operates an off-campus center in Gadsden and videoconferencing sites throughout Alabama and Northwest Georgia. Through its programs of teaching, research, and service, Jacksonville State University has served the region and state for more than 100 years.
