EDITOR’S LETTER
Hope Springs Eternal I am a big proponent of supporting local. As a DC native, I feel it is so important to ensure that our local economy is strong. I was excited to spotlight local boutique owner, Annie Lee. She is fabulous. I was very impressed with the fact that she opened Zoubeck only a few years after opening her wildly popular store, Pretty People Vintage. Both stores are in Old Town Alexandria, Virginia. I have
an amazing vintage poodle necklace that I bought at Pretty People not too long after it opened. It reminded me of the poodle necklace that my mother wore. So I had to have it. I get so many compliments on that necklace whenever I wear it. I am cannot wait to visit Zoubeck. From the pictures, I know that I am going to love everything and want to buy everything. Spring is a time for change. We are so excited about our new partnership with Models, Inc. Aaron Handy and Iran “Bang Paylor are two of my new favorite people. Two talented, focused, and headstrong entrepreneurs who are positioned to make big waves in the fashion industry. The models in the Zoubeck and Buy My Tie photo shoots were provided by Models, Inc.
This year, I am even more focused on bringing emerging global fashion and the emerging creative arts into the pages of this magazine and across a wide spectrum of media. So be on the lookout for our other ventures launching later this year. We also recently signed a contract with Postured Media Group to help us to make things happen. We heart Josh Hargrove and PMG. As always, if you know an amazing designer, artist, musician, restaurant, movie, book, or would like to send a letter to the editor, just email me at: editor@ faconmagazine.com. We are totally on social media. Follow us on Twitter, @faconmagazine, Instagram, @facon_ magazine, and Pinterest: pinterest.com/ faconmagazine/. Connect with us. Enjoy!

BEAUTY REPORT What's Hot This Spring For Your Nails GINGER AND LIZ Be bold and have fun! With nails over the last year, we have noticed it’s been about the stiletto nail and 3D designs. Keeping in the spirit of fun and what's wild, it’s all about playing with bold, but fun colors. For spring we are putting matte polish away and bringing out lux lacquers with over the top shine. As much as I love makeup, I love nail polish more. My heart melted when I found Ginger and Liz. Ginger and Liz Colour Collection is vegan-friendly but very trendy (hard to find in the world of nails). Four years ago, Ginger Johnson and Liz Pickett started their collection using the arts and their fashion backgrounds as their influences. They created a nail line suitable for everyone. Ginger and Liz prove that you can still be health conscious and have impeccable style. I love this quote from their website: “a line that will have both classic and on trend shades along with a rich, long lasting, non toxic formula. Ginger + Liz.... the necessary accessory!” Above: Never A Dull Moment From Left to Right: Bitch Fit, Reality Check, Hot n' Bothered, Ivy League
Nourishment For Your Hair ROOTED-N-NATURE When it comes to hair this spring think buns, braids, and knots. It’s all about pulling your hair off the face and being creative about doing so. Rooted-n-nature has a wonder hair gel that not only helps slick hair down but also promotes hair growth, stop itchy scalps, and add moisture. Sometimes we forget that while we want to style our hair and keep up with trends we must take care of our hair and make sure they products we are using are safe and healthy.
The Aroma of Goddesses NOMATERRA Nomaterra has dropped on the fragrance scene with a line of delicious scents. The brand is a fusion of their founder Agnieszka’s worldwide travels, lust for adventure and her obsession with beauty. Their eau de parfums are hand-made in small batches in Brooklyn, New York. Nomaterra prides itself on the use of natural ingredients, which originate from the finest quality and exclusive sources. They are an eco-friendly brand. Their bottles contain an inner glass piece that can be recycled when you're done. You simply replace it with the refill already included in the package. We love that each city is named after a fabulous city. We particularly love the Washington, DC scent (hmmm, I wonder why?).

GROOMING MEN'S MAINTENANCE To all my male readers I have found an online one stop sanctuary for you. Log on to Maintenance for Men at: experiencem.com. Guys, you will find everything you need for your hair, face and body. My favorite Italian brand would have to be ACCA Kappa. I love the brand because it has a rich history ranging from 1869 until now. I thoroughly enjoy a brand that evolves and has staying power. This one truly has. AACA Kappa has about four men’s collections that all carry botanically-based skincare, shave and shower products. Prices start at $7.50 and up, depending on product. A CONVERSATION WITH...
Nikki Brooks
THE BEAUTÉ J’ADORE DESIGNER WALKED AWAY FROM HER GENERAL MANAGER JOB AT AN ENERGY FIRM by Janelle Williams TO CHASE HER FASHION DREAM
Images courtesy of Nikki Brooks
Nikki Brooks’ first interaction with a sewing machine goes back 20 years. But it wasn’t until her husband gifted the Omaha, Nebraska-native a new one in 2012 that she began spending 5 to 6 days a week sewing her own trendinspired feminine and classic pieces. A year later, she’s shared her designs with more than 195,000 lucky onlookers through her blog, Beaute’ J’adore. If you haven’t already, spend 10 minutes browsing its pages and like me, you’ll be hooked… and curious. How can one woman with no formal training design such graceful pieces from the comforts of her own home? If I had to make a quick assessment, I would simply conclude that she is blessed and gifted. Some might say that assessment is too imposing. But our interview confirms that my assumption might not be too far off. 36
Façon | Spring 2013
“My mother passed away suddenly five months before starting my blog,” said Nikki. “It was a wakeup call for me that life is too short to not do what you love and to live with regret, because tomorrow is not promised. “ After quitting her job as the General Manager for an energy firm, the 30-something-year-old began designing and promoting Beaute’ J’adore. She’s enjoyed every blessing that has come with the experience. Her garments, which could pass for designs spotted on pages of the season’s chicest fashion editorials, prove she is a master at enhancing what to a regular eye might seem finished. Covering every part of the body but the head and feet, she’s reconstructed coats; designed wool pants and tops; worked with leather and suede scraps
“My mother passed away suddenly five months before starting my blog... It was a wakeup call for me that life is too short to not do what you love and to live with regret, because tomorrow is not promised.” to create clutches, totes and arm warmers; and even designed a chic snood. In a few years, she hopes to see her custom creations in stores or on a runway. For now, select items are available for sale through her blog. NIKKI ON THE VINTAGE TREND— I do like vintage but not so much for the fact that it’s “vintage” but more for the craftsmanship and ability to transcend. I love a garment that
looks as good now as it did 20 years ago and that’s what can be accomplished with classic pieces; they never get old. NIKKI’S FAVORITE FABRICS AND DESIGNERS— I love working with wool and leather, they are both such rich textiles and very versatile. I adore Christopher Kane, Louise Goldin, and M. Patmos; very classic pieces with an edge. I will never get tired of Oscar de la Renta, Lanvin, and Vionnet; absolutely beautiful pieces that you will have a lifetime. NIKKI’S FAVORITE PLACES TO SHOP FOR FABRIC—Locally, I shop at G Street Fabrics, and Hancock. For leather, I live and die by Tandy Leather Factory in Essex. I absolutely love Mood Fabrics online and try to make it to New York monthly to hit up the garment district. NIKKI ON DC STYLE—I think DC style is very conservative. I have adopted a bit of DC style as well as incorporated style from other cities I’ve lived in, including Los Angeles, San Antonio, Mississippi, New York and Italy. NIKKI ON ACCESSORIZING— I’m not a fan of the “arm candy” or massive accessories look, unless you have on a pair of jeans and a tee. I think it takes away as opposed to adding value to an outfit. I tend to stay very simple and classic with my accessories. NIKKI ON WHY SHE PREFERS DIY—It’s easy to go out and buy something. But when you create and build something with your own hands, the level of appreciation is much greater. To learn more about Nikki, her designs and her daily musings, visit her blog Beauté J’adore, beautejadore.com.

PEOPLE ARE TALKING ABOUT
Editor’s Pick

Obii Say THE MIXTAPE MASTER OF ANACOSTIA
Emotion separates man from machine. Those coveted tears represent our uncanny ability to feel. It keeps you from being a printer. With social networking technology advancing by the nano millisecond, emotion is losing its ernesty. When is the last time you actually LOL’D after everything everyone said? Does clicking that upward thumb really mean you like that picture of meatloaf night? At the rate we are going, we will be plastic. Obii Say realizes this and doesn’t want it but has no choice but to display it. Possessing a wisdom only brought by hardship, the 20-year-old artist uses it as his Excalibur against those without emotion. Hailing from the Anacostia section of Southeast Washington, D.C., Obii has been relevant locally since the wee months of 2008. His junior year in high school he released over five mixtapes in collaboration with Maryland producer, Sinitus Tempo. Displayed on his perfectly executed hit, “Coffee & Karma,” the protagonist’s karma literally strikes back on its offender. Obii’s super power lies in his blend of a kindergartner’s imagination with a veteran’s understanding. He understands the importance of feeling something at the end of a song beyond how disrespectful the bassline was. “I see the people, places, situations made of plastic...,” echoes at the end of his latest single, “Plastic” hauntingly with a hint of apathy towards his subjects. But can you blame him? With the ease of the internet and the advancement of social networking has abbreviated our entire emotional palette and frankly, not caring is becoming easier and easier. Real struggling artists are being forced to develop reasons for the masses to like them beyond the quality of their work. How much longer will our artists try before they too become plastic? Obii Say remains a champion of reality and will continue to deliver instruction manuals to our emotions right under our noses. You can reach him on Twitter at @imObii and on Facebook: Obii Say 46 Façon | Spring 2013
