Our story

Every day we write new chapters. And some days we open the book just to read an old chapter – all over again. This is our story, our legacy. Some are short stories of action; some are long novels of adventures. But they are all a story about furniture. And even if it is about furniture, some of the main characters were like superheroes. Driven by passion and pride, showing courage and humbleness. The first chapters were written as early as in the 1940s. Life along the elongated Norwegian coast was tough. Located between deep fjords and majestic mountains the life of the farmers in the small village of Sykkylven was no easier. To pave the way for themselves, the farmers started to build furniture in the barns or cellars, and in that way they ensured their own livelihood. They were everyday heroes. My grandfather, Lars Karl Hjelle, was one of these pioneers. The initial wish to provide more jobs led Lars Karl to bring together a number of these furniture-making farmers, and in 1945 he founded LK Hjelle. We are storytellers, and the chief ingredients in all our stories are form, quality and comfort. We like to call them our main chapters, and they are meant to last for generations to come. The harsh northern nature has taught us the importance of high quality, so from the very beginning high quality and comfort have been the essence in all our furniture. This was vital to the first generation, and it still is one of the most important parts of our heritage. True craftsmanship runs in our blood. By adding form, we add design. Our philosophy is to create beautiful timeless pieces with a Scandinavian aesthetic. Being a Norwegian family business producing furniture to an international market requires courage. Maybe even a little heroism. But we dare. Our close cooperation with both young Norwegian and international designers, has made Hjelle known for innovative furniture design. And on this subject we constantly write new chapters. Even though we continue our adventure and we strive to tell new stories, we are proud to say that our furniture is still made at our own factory in Sykkylven. This is a chapter we don’t want to rewrite, but rather read – again and again. We are convinced that it is only in this way that we can ensure we create and design pieces that will last for generations to come – both in form, quality and comfort. Every day, we write new chapters. Driven by the passion and pride to continue our legacy as a third generation company. And our story is still about everyday heroes. Dag Hjelle Third generation and CEO

Our commitment Our aim is to create beautiful, timeless Scandinavian pieces. That is why we work closely with designers – whether they are a part of the Norwegian or international design scene, up-and-coming or already recognised. Together with the designers, Hjelle has launched products that have received numerous awards, and today some of them even stand out as design icons. By continuing to dare to dedicate ourselves to these design processes we can create beautiful and timeless pieces that will last for generations to come – both in form, quality and comfort. Timeless design and substantial quality benefit the environment. Surrounded by the wild, Norwegian nature, we know how to appreciate the environment. We, therefore, work continuously to ensure an environmentally friendly production at every stage. To ensure the working conditions for our employees, we know and control every step in the production and we leave behind as small environmental footprints as possible and all our furniture is produced locally. These are also the reasons why Hjelle holds the environmental certificate ISO 14001. Environmentally friendly furniture is a guarantee we give you.

Designers Norway Says

Hallgeir Homstvedt completed his BA of Industrial Design with Honours from Newcastle University in Australia. After completing his studies in 2006, Homstvedt started to work for the prominent design studio Norway Says. In 2009, he opened his own design studio, and since then he has provided furniture, product and industrial design and consultancy services to a wide range of clients. Hallgeir Homstvedt’s work has been exhibited in London, Tokyo, Oslo, New York and Milan, and he has received a number of design awards over the last nine years.

The young designer trio Norway Says managed to put Norway and Nordic forms back on the international design map shortly after they started their first collaboration in 1999. At first Norway Says was a design project, but in 2002 Torbjørn Anderssen, Andreas Engesvik and Espen Voll established Norway Says as a successful design group that achieved recognition and admiration worldwide for their Scandinavian aesthetics. Norway Says designed furniture and interior objects for the most well-known Scandinavian and international producers. By always striving for a complex simplicity, they achieved a strong series of products that are elegant and decorative through the use of materials and forms, without losing its functionality and comfort. Norway Says won national and international prizes for their work, including Torsten & Wanja Søderberg Award, the Bruno Mathsson Award and the Wallpaper Award. The last mentioned was for Hjelle’s sofa Ugo. After almost ten thriving years the three designers chose to end the adventure Norway Says in 2009.

Anderssen & Voll

Ingmar Relling

Anderssen & Voll was established in 2009. Torbjørn Anderssen and Espen Voll became a part of the international design scene through Norway Says, and today Anderssen & Voll is one of the leading design studios in Scandinavia. The design studio Anderssen & Voll works within various fields of design for a number of international clients. Their creations are typically highly attentive to cultural and market trends. They use this awareness to generate ground-breaking and desirable products for their clients. Both being previously named Norwegian and Scandinavian Designers of the Year, they have also received international awards and recognition for furniture work, lighting and home accessories; including Wallpaper Award, IF Award and Honorary Award for Best Design in Norway.

Ingmar Relling (1920-2002) was an impassioned designer who created a series of functional furniture designs during his long career. He started his career at Rastad & Relling design studio in 1947 before establishing his own studio in Sykkylven in 1950. Today, he is considered as one of the greatest contributors to the golden era of Scandinavian Design. Simplicity, minimalism, elegance and uncompromising quality are key concepts in all of Relling’s designs. In 1965, Ingmar Relling designed his greatest creation: the Siesta chair. It earned him first prize at the Industry Council for Furniture and Furnishing Industry Chair competition the same year. Even the White House was furnished with Ingmar Relling's Siesta. Today, the Siesta chair stands out as an internationally recognised classic and a Norwegian icon.

Andreas Engesvik

Fredrik A. Kayser

Andreas Engesvik (born 1970) holds a bachelor’s degree in art history from the University of Bergen, Norway. Engesvik went to study at the National College of Art and Design. Upon completing his master’s degree in Design in 2000, he founded what was to become Norway Says. After six highly successful years with the company, Andreas Engesvik went solo in 2009, and founded his new studio Andreas Engesvik, Oslo. The studio works in various fields of design ranging from furniture and tableware to industrial design for various international clients. In 2012, Andreas Engesvik was appointed Guest Professor at The University College of Arts, Crafts and Design (Konstfack) in Stockholm. Andreas Engesvik har received many awards for his work, including Red Dot Award, IF Award, Wallpaper Award, Torsten & Wanja Søderberg Award and the Bruno Mathsson Award.

Fredrik A. Kayser (1924-1968) graduated from the Norwegian National College of Art & Design in 1945, and along with Afdal, Brattrud, Raastad & Relling he became one of Norway’s most respected designers during the era Scandinavian Design. In 1952, Kayser started to work at Rastad & Relling design studio, but in 1956 he established his own studio. During his career, Fredrik A. Kayser designed furniture for several of Norway’s most famous furniture manufacturer. Light, modern and functional are all characteristics of his furniture as they are strong representatives of the Scandinavian tone and as the handcraft is clearly inspired by Danish furniture design. Many of his furniture pieces are considered classics today, among them the armchair Modell 711, which in 1960 won first prize in the Industry Council for Furniture and Furnishing Industry Chair competition.

Break

Ever observed how we prefer to sit and behave when we are waiting for something in public areas? Rather alone while we are avoiding everyone’s eyes, trying desperately to act like we’re too concerned with our own business. BREAK respects this human behaviour. The angle of the back and the seat that is split in two make you turn away from strangers. In that way BREAK makes it possible for you to do some serious thinking while you wait.

Duo

DUO sofa is the perfect silencer for spacious rooms. It deadens the sound in a room, mutes the noise from the surroundings and makes a shelter for private conversations. A pair of DUO sofas is, therefore, the optimal solution for many different occasions. When the sides are folded down DUO becomes an open lounge, when they are opened up DUO can act as a room divider or create a quiet room for meetings or relaxation.

Ted

TED is a sofa designed for comfortable living. Precise and solid walls give support to big, soft cushions and become a contrast to the soft inside. Just like a swimming pool that is overflowing. When Hallgeir designed TED, he wanted the sofa to radiate its actual comfort. The result is a sofa that invites you to take a deep breath and snuggle up. Design: Hallgeir Homstvedt

In 2003, Hjelle started collaborating with the Norwegian designer trio Norway Says. The first result of this successful collaboration was UGO. When first released, UGO was considered as the clearly contemporary design – now UGO stands out as an icon among classics. The UGO sofa was designed to look beautiful at every angle, even from behind. The result is a funky sitting landscape where three different module sizes can be combined in different ways and perfectly adapt to various spaces. EVA is full of surprises. EVA embraces, protects and ensures a high level of comfort. The innovative use of textile provides the opportunity to swing and recline fully in a chair that appears static. ASK is the little brother of our model Arena. By form and construction, they are very much the same, but ASK is delivered with cushions consisting of cold foam and fibre instead of our more exclusive ergonomic cushions. This makes ASK just as solid as the popular Arena, but more moderate in cost efficiency. ASK is therefore the ideal sofa for either the guesthouse or summer cottage.
