ACCREDITATION INFORMATION

We are proud to announce that our Day and Adventure camps have been recently accredited by the American Camp Association (ACA). ACA is the only national accreditation body for camps of all types. ACA’s accreditation standards focus on health, safety and risk management, and are used as benchmarks by government entities. ACA accreditation provides public evidence of a camp’s commitment to the wellbeing of campers and staff. Accreditation indicates to the public that the camp administration has voluntarily allowed a peer review process in which its practices are compared to standards established by professionals and authoritative sources associated with the camp industry. Sarasota County Parks, Recreation and Natural Resources participated in a peer review at which all written evidence of compliance was reviewed, and field visits were conducted to confirm that the standards were implemented into camp operations. Sarasota County successfully met all standards of excellence in the areas applicable to Sarasota County operations.

CAMP SOFTWARE UPDATE

Sarasota County’s Summer Camp program is excited to introduce our latest addition to day and adventure camp registration, CampDoc. CampDoc is a camp management system that was created with your child’s safety and well-being in mind. As a parent, you’ll find it easy to input vital health information, emergency contacts and necessary details online through this secure portal. Upon completing your initial online registration, you’ll receive an email from our CampDoc site inviting you as a new user to manage your child’s camp profile. Please fill this out to ensure we have all necessary details for a safe and enjoyable camp experience.

All CampDoc forms must be completed prior to the first day of camp.

SUMMER IN THE PARKS

WELCOME!

Sarasota County Parks, Recreation and Natural Resources offers 10 weeks of summer fun for children entering grades 1 through 12. These camps provide a variety of safe and enjoyable summer recreation opportunities for your children.

Day Camp: Designed for children entering grades 1 through 5, the camp includes weekly themes, multiple field trips a week, physical activity, creative arts, reading, science and nature, safety and wellness, unstructured play and character-development activities.

Adventure Camp: Youth entering grades 6 through 8 participate in multiple field trips a week as well as sports, games, arts and crafts, and more.

Counselor-in-Training (C.I.T.): An elite group of hand-selected high school students learn skills that will prepare them to become successful camp counselors. C.I.T. participants assist counselors and have the opportunity to earn volunteer hours.

Specialty Camp: More than 30 specialty camps are scheduled throughout the summer. Each camp focuses on a specific theme, allowing campers to focus on a favorite activity or try something different.

DAY CAMP - GRADES 1-5

Day Camp offers a safe and exciting setting for your child(ren) to enjoy a summer of discovery. Weekly themes allow campers to have fun, make friends and enjoy new experiences with field trips each week and on-site activities focusing on physical activity, creative arts, science and nature, safety and wellness, character development and reading to prevent summer learning loss. Camp fee includes official camp T-shirt, field trip costs and on-site activities. Breakfast/lunch will be provided free of charge through the Sarasota District Schools Food and Nutrition Services Summer Break Spot Program as the field trip schedule allows. Campers are transported to field trip sites in Sarasota County school buses. Parents must check in their children at the campsite between 7:30 and 9 a.m. Structured activities take place between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. Children arriving late must be transported to the field trip location by their parent or guardian.

ADVENTURE CAMP - GRADES 6-8

Your older child will enjoy more challenging activities and field trips while maintaining a safe environment. Adventure campers participate in multiple field trips every week and enjoy on-site activities including sports, games, arts and crafts, and more! Adventure campers are transported to field trip sites in Sarasota County school buses. Parents must check in their children at the campsite between 7:30 and 9 a.m. Most activities are planned between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m., but some field trips require an earlier arrival or later pickup. Children arriving late must be transported to the field trip location by their parent or guardian. Breakfast/lunch will be provided at Bee Ridge Park free of charge through the Sarasota District Schools Food and Nutrition Services Summer Break Spot Program as the field trip schedule allows.

C.I.T. PROGRAM

Students entering 9th through 11th grade are invited to apply for the Counselor-in-Training (C.I.T.) Program and enjoy sessions that will prepare them to become a successful camp counselor. A limited number of C.I.T. opportunities are available. An online registration form indicating camp location must be completed prior to April 26. Candidates will be interviewed in the order the registration form is received until maximum enrollment is reached. C.I.T.s will have the opportunity to earn volunteer hours as they assist counselors on-site and on field trips. Training sessions include team building, group games, safety, first aid and more. If selected, candidates must provide a letter of recommendation from an adult other than a family member. The program fee is due once the candidate is selected. Participants should contact their high school prior to summer to verify eligibility of volunteer hours. Breakfast/lunch will be provided free of charge through the Sarasota District Schools Food and Nutrition Services Summer Break Spot Program as the field trip schedule allows. C.I.T.s will receive uniform T-shirts. C.I.T.s will be required to attend C.I.T. training May 29 to June 1. Detailed schedule will be provided upon selection.

SPECIALTY CAMPS

Minimum enrollment is required for all programs and many of our camps are subject to weather conditions. If camp is canceled prior to the start of the day’s activities, a make-up day will be offered. If no make-up day is available, a prorated refund will be offered. No refunds will be issued within 30 days of your child’s first registered day of camp.

AIM, FIRE AND SHOOT CAMP

Experts introduce campers to the growing sports of trap, skeet, sporting clays, archery and bow hunting. Campers will spend two days learning shotgun safety, etiquette and proper technique for shooting clay targets. Ear and eye protection will be provided. For best fit, campers should bring their own sunglasses. Campers will spend three days learning the basics of archery from certified USA Archery coaches. This introduction covers the mechanics of the traditional and compound bows, 3-D shooting, Olympic archery and competition shooting. This camp ends with an archery competition with prizes to test campers’ skills. All equipment is provided. Campers should bring water and a snack daily.

ARCHERY CAMP

Campers learn the art of archery through expert instruction by certified USA Archery coaches from the Lekatchka Archery Club. This introduction covers the mechanics of traditional and compound bows, 3-D shooting, Olympic archery and competition shooting. This camp ends with a competition with prizes to test campers’ skills. All equipment is provided. Campers should bring water and a snack daily.

ART AND EATS CAMP

This is a camp that combines our art and cooking programs all in one. Our cooking curriculum each day will be about kitchen cleanliness, food safety and proper tool usage. Campers will be using the “three bite rule” as they explore new food flavors both sweet, savory and sometimes exotic. The second half of the camp will be filled with art and exploring many different types and forms of art such as paper, woodworking, sewing, tile, paint and creative uses for recycled materials and more. All tools, recipes and supplies will be provided as well as a bunch of new skills, a dash of inspiration and a pinch of spice!

CAMP RUNWAY

Camp Runway offers an in-depth background of the process and elements needed to design a collection. From concept to construction, illustration and fabrics, campers will enjoy learning different skills throughout fun and exciting projects. Each session campers will explore fashion history, hand sewing, draping with mannequins, textiles, sketching, painting, collaging, merchandising and so much more! Minimum registration is required for each session.

Chef Camp - Mattison’s Forty-One - NEW!

The chefs at Mattison’s Forty-One will teach you culinary techniques and elaborate recipes from some of the best chefs around. Learn the finer cooking skills from grilling to saute to sauces and sides.

Chef Camp - Made in Italy

Ciao! Made In Italy is teaching a cooking class for kids! We invite you into our kitchen to learn the basics to some Italian kid-friendly food. You will learn how to make pizza, pasta and Italian desserts.

COMPOUND BOARDSHOP’S SKATEBOARD CAMP

Come shred Sarasota’s Payne Park this summer with the Compound skate team! Go from dropping in and work your way up to the more advanced stuff, like board slides, grinds and airs. This camp is great for everyone, from the newest of beginners to the most advanced skaters. There’s a teacher perfect for every skill level. Take your skating to a whole new level this summer. Campers should bring sunscreen, snacks and a refillable water bottle. No equipment? No problem! Loaner equipment available by calling the Compound Boardshop in advance at 941-552-9805.

COMPOUND BOARDSHOP’S SKIM, SURF AND PADDLE CAMP

Suitable for all skill levels, this camp consists of surf, skim and stand-up paddle instruction, demonstration and practice, mixed with beach activities, floating docks, games and plenty of summertime fun. Our Compound Boardshop instructors will work with you in small groups, divided up by experience level, to give you five days of dedicated surf, skim and stand-up paddle board immersion to get you riding waves like never before. We strive to have our campers gain confidence, build lifelong skills and create lasting friendships. What to bring to camp: Refillable water bottle, sunscreen, snacks and a towel. **Campers are also welcome to bring their own equipment or use the equipment provided by Compound Boardshop.**

CREEPY, CRAWLY CRITTER CAMP

Want to know more about bugs, snakes, owls and other critters? This camp provides in-depth exploration into where they live, what they eat and all the fun and gory details! Campers will learn about spiders, slimy and slippery amphibians and reptiles, the good, the bad and the ugly insects as well as how to identify skulls and wildlife paw prints. Park naturalists will lead nature walks, conduct safaris and provide interactive presentations. Indoor activities include live show and tell specimens, owl pellet dissections and take-home crafts. Campers should wear hats and closed-toe shoes and arrive with sunscreen, water and optional snacks.

2024 SUMMER IN THE PARKS

FRESHWATER FISHING AND BOATING CAMP

Campers will have a great time learning freshwater fishing and boating skills while receiving hands-on instruction and in-boat experience! Supported in collaboration with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, this camp will focus on key angling and boating skills such as casting, netting, knot tying, motor instruction, oaring, launching and maneuvering vessels. Anglers will get up close and personal with fish biology and cleaning, as well as practicing responsible angling methods. This camp will provide instruction for numerous key skills and techniques that anglers of all ages can use for years to come. Campers will receive a rod, reel and tackle box to take home. Limited to 20 campers.

JUNIOR LIFEGUARD CAMP

Spend a week with professional lifeguards learning the fundamentals of lifeguarding. This program offers hands-on learning experiences and character-building activities while having fun. Lifeguards with the Sarasota County Lifeguard Division train participants in water safety, rescue techniques, rescue paddling, competitive lifeguard events, how to identify and treat marine life, CPR and first aid. Fee includes a rash guard and T-shirt. Swimsuits and goggles are required. To participate, all potential campers must attend a 30-minute tryout session at Arlington Park pool and demonstrate the ability to swim 100 yards freestyle in 2:05 or less, tread water for five minutes and retrieve an object from the bottom of the pool.

*** Strong swim background is essential, swim team experience preferred.

*** Returning campers are exempt from tryouts. Conditions vary daily. Tryouts are offered from 11 a.m. to noon at Arlington Park pool, May 4,11,18 and June 1. Reserve your date during online registration or indicate date on mail-in form; walk-ups are not allowed. Alternate tryout dates may be arranged if necessary.

MARINE EXPLORERS CAMP

Campers will have a great time learning and exploring the field of marine conservation and science. From kayaking and dip netting critters, to identifying marine species in Lemon Bay, campers will learn how researchers and scientists care for our local watersheds and the types of animals that inhabit them. We’ll learn a lot but play a lot too, with fun daily activities that show the importance and sensitivity of the Gulf of Mexico and area waterways.

MOSAIC AND RESIN CAMP

In this camp, we will be exploring a bit of destruction and science while we learn about mosaics and resin arts. Come smash and rebuild colorfully creative mosaic pieces from multiple media types and mix your way in to some cool techniques in resin art too!

Join Impara SRQ at the Venice Community Center for a week of piano and percussion camp. Students in grades K-1 will enjoy learning about piano and percussion. Each day will include playing the piano or percussion instruments, a music craft and group activity.

Join Impara SRQ at the Venice Community Center for a Patriotic music camp. Students in grades 2-3 will be introduced to patriotic music. Each day will incorporate percussion, singing, a music craft and group activity.

Create your very own theme park with our exciting program! Discover the art of crafting fun rides using LEGO® bricks and various building materials. Unleash your creativity and learn while you play as you bring your amusement park to life with moving attractions! Simple visual block coding with bring elements of the rides to life and introduce basic programming and engineering ideas.

Brick, Click and Roll

Make moving LEGO® brick creations that sense their environment and navigate with simple visual coding and sensors. Create a cable car, ferry, bus and other fun ways to get around. Simple visual block coding with bring elements of the rides to life and introduce basic programming and engineering ideas.

Escape Games: Codes, Clues and Ciphers

Learn how to send secret messages and how to decode them. Learn about Caesar, Pigpen, the Enigma Machine, Moon Alphabet, Morse Code, Cipher Wheels and more! Solve mysteries and create puzzles you can use as part of our Escape Room series. Enjoy playing an escape mini-game based on these challenges as well as creating them.

Escape Games: Hiding in Plain Light

Escape Rooms use the science of light and the quirks of human vision to hide and reveal information under different lighting conditions! Blacklight (UV), red reveal, shadows, strobe effects, glow in the dark and more. Enjoy playing an escape mini-game based on these challenges and a glow party!

Escape Games: Secret Journal Game

Take your puzzle creation skills to the next level by making your own “book” based escape room. Starting with the idea of a secret diary or spy journal, you’ll create a game anyone can play. Learn about how to design a good game and how to tell a story through puzzles to make your game even more exciting. Using both classic puzzles, codes, and some mechanical and tech tricks, too.

Escape Games: Build a Mini-Mobile Game

Learn more about some of the hands-on of making a mini-escape game as you explore hasps, hinges, boxes and locks, magnets, hidden compartments and more. Learn how to make a book safe, and make your props resilient. Campers will have created a take-home game they have their parents and friends play.

Kid Coders: Make Your Own Video Game

Learn about coding and algorithms through a series of fun games involving physical movement then learn to translate your ideas onto the screen to with simple visual coding blocks to make real (basic) games. Imagine your idea come to life. Instruction will be geared toward early elementary but older students can work on more advanced projects.

Kid Bots: Beginning Robotics

Using different types of bots, young campers working in pairs will learn what machines can do and how to command them. We will have fun along the way with lots of hands-on activities that will tell the robots how to solve problems and will invent some challenges for them. Instruction will be geared toward early elementary but older students can work on more advanced projects

SAND SCULPTURE CAMP

Amaze your family and friends with the sand-sculpting skills and techniques you will learn from a master sand sculptor on beautiful Siesta Beach. Fee includes a custom sand-sculpting tool kit for campers to keep. Bring plenty of drinking water, a hat and sunscreen. A shade tent will be provided by the county for breaks from the sun.

2024 CAMP GUIDELINES

The purpose of these guidelines is to provide you with the basic policies and procedures that allow for safe and organized programs. Guidelines shall be followed at each camp throughout the county. It is your responsibility as parents/guardians to review this information with your child (or children) so that all involved understand and agree on camp operations.

Join us for our Parent Information Night on Thursday, May 30, hosted at each of our day and adventure camp locations! It’s the perfect opportunity for parents to connect with our camp staff, collect car tags, grab camp shirts and gather all the essential details they need. Parent Information Night is a one-time occurrence, regardless of enrollment in one or both sessions, so don’t miss out!

OPERATING PROCEDURES

Sign-in/sign-out procedures

Drop-off and pick-up for full-day camps will occur via a car line. Each family will be issued car tags for the people they have designated as authorized pick-ups during the registration process. The registration form provides a space for the names of a parent and up to three additional people who may sign your child out of camp. One of these designated people will have to show their photo identification to pick up the camper. You may choose to have your child walk or bike home. Simply indicate that choice on the camper information profile within CampDoc. Your child will sign themselves out at the close of camp, and staff will release them. More details on the car line times will be given prior to the start of camp.

Late morning drop-off/early departure procedures (Full Day Camps only)

Drop-off occurs from 7:30-9 a.m. and pick-up between 4-5:30 p.m. (hours may very depending on field trips). If you arrive with your child after the car line closes in the morning, you will need to call the park office number to have a staff person come out to greet you. If your child’s group has already left for an activity off-site, you will need to take your child to that location and sign them in with camp staff. If you wish to coordinate an early pick-up for your child prior to their return to camp, you must do so in advance and sign out your child with camp staff at the off-site location.

Late fees

A late fee will be charged when children are picked up late from any camp programs:

• $10 will be charged for the first 15 minutes.

• $1 will be assessed for each minute after the first 15 minutes. This policy is strictly enforced and your child will not be allowed to return to camp until the late fees are paid.

Staff

All staff undergo state and local criminal background checks, a fingerprint screening, a state sexual predator background check and substance screening. At each camp site, we ensure that CPR and first aid-trained staff are onsite.

Indoor-outdoor activities and camper groups

Children participate in various activities both indoor and outdoor. We work diligently to maintain a specific camper to counselor ratio as indicated by the American Camp Association. Campers will be organized according to their ages to guarantee age-appropriate activities and experiences. We use the birthday (precise number of years, days and months) of each camper to place them into attendance groups. This policy is implemented to uphold safety and promote consistent programming. Campers will have the opportunity to form bonds and friendships within their designated age groups. We cannot accommodate special requests for grouping children together.

Proof of age

Campers must meet age requirements by Sept. 1, 2024. Proof of age must be furnished upon request.

Health/medical concerns

All campers must be able to transfer on and off standard school buses with minimal assistance. All campers must be toilet trained and be able to use toilet facilities independently. Additionally, campers should be able to follow directions, stay with assigned camp staff, change their clothes, add use restroom and feed themselves independently. Some camps may have the occurrence of lice. Parents will be notified by letter if lice have been found at camp. If your child (or children) has lice, you will need to keep them at home until they are lice-free. If other contagions occur, parents will be notified. Campers who are ill will need to stay home until they present a doctor's notice releasing that child.

Camper Information

After you complete initial registration for Day or Adventure Camp, you will receive an email from docnetwork.org with a link to our CampDoc site inviting you as a new user to manage your child’s camp profile. Here you will fill out all their camper’s information which MUST be complete by the start of their first day of camp. If the camper’s profile is not complete, you will receive reminder emails. Within CampDoc, each camper will have a completed camper health form. Camp staff will be made aware of any medical needs that were noted on the form.

Breakfast, lunch and snacks

Full-day camp programs will be provided with breakfast and lunch through Sarasota County Schools’ Food and Nutrition Services Summer Break Spot program, dependent on field trip schedules. If services are not available, advanced notice will be provided via drop-off and pick-up line communication. Food services will not be available during mini camp sessions. For full-day and specialty camps, parents should provide plenty of water and snacks. Water will be available at all park sites; however, we encourage you to pack extra beverages for your children. Lunches and snacks will not be refrigerated. Please label your child’s lunch box or cooler.

Camper shirts (Day Camp only)

Each camper attending full-day camp will receive one official camper shirt per session. Your child will be required to wear his/her shirt on field trips for easy recognition. T-shirts will be distributed at the Parent Information Night or your child’s first week of camp. If your child is

registered for both sessions, they will receive both shirts in the first session. If your child is only enrolled in the second session, a shirt will be given to them the first week of session two. Additional T-shirts will be available for purchase on-site based on availability. Indicate your child’s size on the registration form. Shirts are not refundable and cannot be exchanged.

Attire

Please provide your child (or children) with the proper attire. Closed-toe shoes are required. No open-toed shoes/sandals/Crocs. Refer to the field trip schedule and provide sunscreen on the appropriate days. Staff is not permitted to apply sunscreen. Time will be set aside for children to apply sunscreen. Shirts and hats should be worn to prevent sunburn.

Personal items, Electronics and Cell Phone Policy

A goal of our Summer Camp is to promote a electronic free environment to allow for campers to connect, learn and grow. Camper use of cell phones or other electronic or wireless devices are prohibited at any time once the camp day begins unless specific permission is given by camp staff. Children should not bring any personal items such as toys, cellphones, games, tablets, trading cards, headphones, etc. to camp unless approved by staff. Sarasota County is not responsible for lost, damaged or stolen personal property.

Reasonable modifications

Children of all abilities are invited to enroll in our summer camp programs. During registration, be sure to indicate that a modification is necessary for your child so we may contact you prior to camp to discuss reasonable modification.

Field trips

Many camp programs offer a variety of field trips. All children shall participate in these trips, and the camp facility may be vacated. Please have your child (or children) at camp by 9 a.m. (unless otherwise noted) in order to participate. Some hours may vary depending on field trips and parents will be notified of early field trip departures and late arrivals. Please note the following:

• Participants must be able to transfer on and off standard school buses with minimal assistance.

• Registration fees include the cost of all field trips for Day, Adventure and C.I.T. camps. Field trip fees cannot be refunded. Refer to the field trip schedule for locations. Field trips are subject to change without notice. Whenever possible, you will be notified of any changes.

• A field trip and general release must be signed by a parent or guardian at time of registration. This will cover all camp programs unless additional permission slips are required by field trip vendors.

• Please check the on-site white board daily in the car line for announcements related to field trips and on-site activities. Provide your child(ren) with the proper attire/change of clothes, sunscreen, lunch/snacks and beverages. NO GLASS containers. Label all personal items with your child(ren)’s name(s).

• Spending money is not necessary for field trips. If your child brings money for field trips, it is your child’s responisibility to keep track of their money and store it in a safe place. Staff is not responsible for a camper’s personal money. We encourage parents to be frugal if sending spending money.

• For late arrivals or early dismissals, you will be responsible for getting your children to or from the field trip site. Children must be signed in or out with camp staff at the field trip location.

Evaluations

Evaluations will be issued via email to each camp family at the end of each camp.

Tax Information

For tax purposes, the Federal Tax ID # is 59-6000848. Keep your receipt for tax purposes.

CAMP RULES AND DISCIPLINE

• Be respectful toward other campers and camp staff.

• Follow directions.

• No fighting.

• No foul language.

• No phone use during camp activities.

• No sexually suggestive language or behavior.

• No smoking, vaping or drug use.

• No stealing.

• No teasing other campers.

• No weapons of any kind.

Should a disciplinary problem arise, parents/guardians will be contacted if the problem affects the safety or well-being of another camper or staff member, or if the problem cannot be resolved after fair warning.

A three-strike system for misbehavior and continued misbehavior is used in all camp programs:

• First strike: warning.

• Second strike: suspension from the program or removal from the next field trip.

• Third strike: permanent removal from summer camp.

Three strike/suspension and immediate expulsion are based on per level of severity. No refunds will be issued upon removal from camp. Suspension or expulsion is possible regardless of strikes or without warning if:

• a child deliberately harms another child or staff member.

• a child deliberately or willfully destroys the property of others (damage to property will be paid for by parents).

Any request for return to camp after suspension or expulsion will require an in-person meeting between the parent/legal guardian and the camp coordinator/department representative prior to authorization.

2024 REGISTRATION PROCEDURE

• Registration begins at 7 a.m., Monday, March 25, 2024, either by mail or online.

• Registrations postmarked prior to Friday, March 22, 2024, will not be accepted and will be returned.

• Refund policy. No refunds will be issued within 30 days of your child’s first registered day of camp. Refunds for all camp programs requested prior to 30 days of your child’s first registered day of camp will be subject to a $25 nonrefundable administrative fee.

• NSF check fees. A returned check, for any reason, will be charged the face value of the check plus a service charge. Service charges are based on the amount of the check, minimum of $25.

• Registrations are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. Online registration receives immediate placement with a 50 percent credit card payment for day and adventure camp (the remainder to be billed) and 100 percent credit card payment for specialty camps. Pompano Trailhead Community Building is the only drop-off site for registration. Forms will only be accepted on Monday, March 25, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. or until camps are full. (Drop-off registration will accept payment by check or credit card.) Drop-off registration is extremely limited. Mail-in registration will be processed according to date received. Camp locations fill up fast. Please plan accordingly and mark your second and third location choices.

• If mailing, double check your postage to ensure that it is adequate for delivery.

• Read all options carefully. Incomplete information slows down the registration process. Please be neat and complete. Be aware that no refunds for any program or session will be issued within 30 days of your child’s first registered day of camp.

• Multiple families who want their children at the same camp location should mail registrations in the same envelope.

• Bring your receipt with you on the first day of camp!

Your child will be required to wear his/her shirt on field trips for easy recognition. T-shirts will be distributed at the parent information night or your child’s first week of camp. If your child is registered for both sessions, they will receive both shirts in the first session. If your child is only enrolled in the second session, a shirt will be given to them the first week of session two Additional shirts can be purchased on-site at your child’s camp location based on availability.
