GSMA’s Mobile World Conference returned to Barcelona on 28th of February and among the 61,000 attendees from over 143 countries was a very excited team from JT International, delighted to be back in attendance at the world’s largest and most influential connectivity event, discussing the convergence of mobile, the potential of the metaverse and transforming vertical industries. With the very latest tech on display from world renowned brands, up-and-coming start-ups and speaking slots from influential industry figures, this year marked a return to normality and the re-introduction of the in-person event format, which ran alongside the now familiar virtual programming. Guest speakers from Microsoft, Nokia and Ericsson, to name a few, all brought something to the conversation, from innovative ideas to passionate strategies for laying the groundwork for the future of connectivity. The conversations weren’t solely focused on technology. We were thrilled to see important topics on the agenda including discussions on digital inclusion, the future of education, and collaboration culture alongside topics like 5G, AI, cybersecurity, and sustainability. In this eBook, we look at the major themes and technologies we saw being discussed at MWC. We’ll be breaking down these technologies, and looking at how they are destined to shape our perceptions of mobile technology and connectivity. We’ll also explore the ways that JT is either already investing in these innovations or bringing key learnings back home for the benefits of our Islands. With all of this in mind, let’s explore the conversation at MWC 2022.

5G was one of the major points of conversation throughout the conference. This technology represents the next generation of mobile connectivity and will soon be deployed all over the world. It’s faster, more efficient, and more reliable than any cellular connectivity that has come before it. According to speakers at MWC, 5G networks will cover one-third (mwcbarcelona.com) of the world’s population by 2025. Current coverage stands at 90% South Korea, 60% China, 45% USA and less than 10% in Europe. This will make it more powerful and available to users, pushing the need for creative, cuttingedge endeavours in the 5G sector.
In areas where connectivity has been limited and slow, 5G has the potential to change lives and provide new opportunities. For businesses, 5G is a total game-changer. It will hasten the proliferation of IoT technology as well as set the stage for a truly mobile workplace. 5G will also empower businesses to perform more data-intensive work without being hindered by connectivity speeds, bandwidth, or reliability. JT has been at the forefront of 5G deployment in the Channel Islands and we will continue to explore this and other emerging technologies to help our Islands realise their full digital potential. #MWC22 HIGHLIGHT
As 5G becomes more ubiquitous, we have to start thinking about how best to prepare our networks for the future of 5G, 6G and beyond.

Advancing
More than any other technology, AI is one of the critical drivers behind the Fourth Industrial Revolution (weforum.org), according to speakers at the 2022 MWC. This technology has the potential to revolutionize our workplaces and bolster technology infrastructures as communications, mobile devices, and data-backed operations become more capable and business automation and transformation become more commonplace. In 2022, companies are expected to have an average of 35 AI projects in place (gartner.com) with 20% of businesses saying automating tasks such as invoicing and contract validation is the second most crucial use of AI. However, one concern in the AI space is ethics. The building trustworthy AI session brought together researchers, businesses and civil society representatives to discuss how we can develop AI ethically while still being innovative.
AI
By pairing AI with connectivity and mobile technology, innovators will not only be able to create unique user experiences but completely revolutionise the capabilities of deployed devices.

From the rise of Software as a service (SaaS) to the emergence of Internet of Things (IoT), cloud environments have continued to power nearly every major technology milestone that has emerged over the last ten years.
Adoption of the cloud by MNOs is also on the increase. Vendors are becoming increasingly agile with exploring automation and cloud opportunities, primarily driven by the evolution of 5G, increased traffic demands during the pandemic and changing customer demands.
The cloud allows for data collection and analysis on an unprecedented scale and has sparked the massive Xaas sector providing businesses with far greater computing power for off-site computing.
As the cloud has gained momentum, cybersecurity has become increasingly important. Since networks have become split across hybrid workspaces, individuals and businesses are becoming increasingly more vulnerable to cybercrime attacks.
Looking forward, it doesn’t look like the endless potential of the cloud is going anywhere anytime soon. Experts project the cloud market will reach $75 billion by 2026, which will make it one of the most significant sectors within tech.
Over the last few years, cybercrimes have been at the forefront of every business owner’s mind. With a predicted damage cost of $10.5 trillion in just three years, there isn’t a sector, industry, or company that shouldn’t be concerned with the risks of cyberattacks.

The FinTech industry has boomed in 2021, from the infamous rise of NFTs to the steady growth and adoption of blockchain technology. However you look at it, the financial sector is ripe for innovation on all fronts. Today’s banks are mobile, and operators are poised to prove it. JT is uniquely positioned to provide secure, cutting-edge solutions to startups and established institutions alike. This includes delivering new assets that enable disruptive technologies, secure customers’ accounts and resources, and power new services and experiences for customers. Just like cybersecurity, preventing fraud is a major concern in the FinTech world.
One session at MWC focused on the rise of scam attacks and how increased collaboration across the FinTech ecosystem has led to innovative security solutions. Half of the world’s total population now own a smartphone, and two billion of these individuals are using mobile banking. This is critical to the future of tech development, but it comes with an increased risk and prevalence of fraud. JT works with Mobile Network Operators worldwide to deliver intelligent data solutions to help combat fraud. Working across multiple jurisdictions and sectors, JT’s products assist with strong customer authentication.

#MWC22 HIGHLIGHTS
Supplier Relationship Manager
The technology horizon for 2022 is bright, with many businesses accelerating their digital transformation initiatives. However, there has also been an obvious rise in efforts to create sustainable digital businesses. These businesses put people and the planet at the core of their digital transformation. They use technology to increase productivity, efficiency and cost savings while reducing product waste, chemicals and resources. They also measure, analyse and track their progress, all of which can minimise the impact on the environment.
Fisker’s all-electric SUV made its debut at this years MWC, featuring recyclable parts at an affordable price.
In a post-COVID world, every tech business, including JT, should bear the responsibility of using their resources to help craft a brighter tomorrow. This includes investing in sustainability technology and using communications, automation, and AI to ease the load on individuals’ lives. This year, sustainability was a popular topic at MWC with presentations about eco ratings for mobile devices and how foodtech and agritech can help look after the Amazon. We expect to see these conversations become more central to tech in the years to come.
Suppliers showcased reduced packaging materials.
In 2020, Nokia reduced the use of new packaging materials by 1600 metric tons (3200 in 2019) by reusing transportation packaging.
