n primer lugar, queremos felicitar y dar la bienvenida, desde la Asociación de Comerciantes del Barrio de las Letras de Madrid, a la corporación municipal y al gobierno autonómico recien estrenados en sus funciones. Deseamos encontrar los puntos de encuentro para que, a través del diálogo, podamos trabajar para hacer aún mejor la vida de estas calles para vecinos, visitantes y comerciantes. Comercio, cultura y turismo deben ser pilares fundamentales en nuestra labor común, atenta al cuidado de una zona de gran importancia histórico-cultural como es el Barrio de las Letras. También damos la bienvenida en este número al verano, con generosas dosis de color y propuestas para disfrutar del aire libre o intramuros, como las propias de las visitas guiadas por el barrio –una excelente forma de vivir el barrio–; el repaso gráfico a un evento de la trascendencia de DecorAccion, celebrado con gran éxito en nuestras calles el pasado mes de junio, y la agenda de exposiciones y espectáculos. La recien inaugurada placa en el Convento de las Trinitarias Descalzas dedicada a los restos de Cervantes, la Casa Museo Lope de Vega, los prestigiosos museos, gastronomía, terrazas, teatro… hay mucho para ver, para vivir.
Firstly, we wish to extend a warm welcome, on behalf of the Barrio de las Letras Business Association of Madrid, to both the new municipal and regional governments, who have recently taken up their new tasks. We hope to find common ground so that, through dialogue, we can work to make life in these streets even better for neighbours, visitors and businesses. Commerce, culture and tourism should be the pillars of our common work, conscious of preserving an area of great historical and cultural importance such as the Barrio de las Letras. We would also like to welcome you, the reader, to this summer edition of our magazine, with generous splashes of colour and suggestions to enjoy in the open air or indoors, such as the guided tours through the neighbourhood, a fine way to really live the city; a report on the sublime event that was DecorAcción, celebrated on our streets this past month of June, and your guide to exhibitions and shows. The recently inaugurated plaque at the Convento de las Trinitarias Descalzas dedicated to the remains of Cervantes, the Casa Museo Lope de Vega, the prestigious museums, gastronomy, terraces and theatre… there’s plenty to see and plenty to live.

Cervantes ya tiene su homenaje
On Thursday 11 June, the former mayor of Madrid, Ana Botella, unveiled the funerary monument of Miguel de Cervantes in the church of the Convento de las Trinitarias. The public presentation of this monument was the culmination of one of the most important cultural projects ever undertaken by the city of Madrid. After several months of excavations in the crypt of the convent, the team of archaeologists finally managed to find the remains of the author of Don Quixote.
El jueves 11 de junio, la ex alcaldesa de Madrid, Ana Botella, descubrió el monumento funerario de Miguel de Cervantes en la iglesia del Convento de las Trinitarias. Con la presentación al público de este monumento, culminaba uno de los proyectos culturales más importantes en los que se ha embarcado la ciudad de Madrid. Después de varios meses de excavaciones en la cripta del convento, finalmente el equipo de arqueólogos consiguió encontrar los restos del autor de El Quijote.

The Association and the Foundation exchanged views and discussed gaps and needs in an exchange between the Barrio de las Letras and the district of Usera.

Un grupo de comerciantes de la ciudad francesa de Grenoble se reunió recientemente con la Asociación de Comerciantes del Barrio de las Letras. Su interés era conocer el funcionamiento de nuestra Asociación de Comerciantes y del Barrio de las Letras. El encuentro estuvo organizado por la Cámara de Comercio Franco Española (La Chambre).
A group of traders from the French city of Grenoble met recently with the Barrio de las Letras Business Association. They were interested in finding out about how our Business Association and the Barrio de las Letras works. The meeting was organized by the FrenchSpanish Chamber of Commerce (La Chambre).

Mercado de las Ranas
Mercado de las Ranas (Frog Market)
El 4 de julio se celebró el ya tradicional Mercado de las Ranas. Los establecimientos del barrio sacaron sus productos a la calle, pero también hubo actuaciones musicales y otras iniciativas, como el Teatro de las Ranas, cuyo tema fue ‘Veraneantes’. Esta actividad se desarrolló a pie de calle en tres enclaves del barrio: la Calle Prado con la Plaza de Santa Ana, la Calle Lope de Vega con Quevedo y la Calle Alameda con Gobernador. Las próximas ediciones serán el 5 de septiembre y el 3 de octubre.
On July 4, the now traditional Mercado de las Ranas was held. Neighbourhood stores displayed their products on the street, but there were also musical performances and other initiatives such as the Teatro de las Ranas (Frog Theatre), whose theme was 'Holidaymakers'. This activity took place on the streets of the neighbourhood at three venues: the corner of Calle Prado and Plaza Santa Ana, the corner of Calle Lope de Vega and Quevedo and Calle Alameda and Gobernador. Forthcoming renewals will be on 5 September and 3 October.

ACTUALIDAD NEWS Estación 21 El sábado 20 de junio tuvo lugar, una vez más, Estación 21, el evento que cada nueva estación organiza Chulapa Flow Producciones. En esta ocasión, se trataba de celebrar el Día de la Música y, para ello, el Barrio de las Letras se llenó de ritmo y actuaciones en vivo. Hubo ruta de DJ´s nacionales e internacionales –vinieron de Venezuela, Perú, México, Colombia, Reino Unido, Miami y Argentina- a cargo de Conspiraciones Tropicales. Los DJ pusieron la música a shows de moda, obras de teatro, espectáculos de danza, performances… La próxima edición será el sábado, 19 de septiembre.

Encuentros de COCAHI en Madrid La Junta Directiva de la Confederación Española de Cascos Históricos (COCAHI) se reunió el 5 de junio en Madrid, en el Palacio de la Moncloa, con los responsables de Asuntos Nacionales y Cultura del Gabinete de la Presidencia del Gobierno de España, Cristina Ysasi-Ysasmendi y Manuel Barranco. Los representantes de COCAHI les entregaron la Declaración de Santiago, un documento en el que se adjuntan medidas a llevar a cabo por las distintas administraciones públicas de España para potenciar, mejorar y garantizar el futuro y viabilidad de los entornos históricos comerciales. Antes habían mantenido otro encuentro en la sede central de Bankia con Fernando Sobrini Aburto, Director General Adjunto de Banca de Particulares, y Javier González Pol, Director de Comercios, en el que estudiaron diferentes posibilidades de convenios entre ambas entidades para intentar dotar al pequeño comercio de toda España de un gran acuerdo que le posicione para poder competir en mejores condiciones frente a las ventajas de las que disfrutan los grandes formatos comerciales.
COCAHI meetings in Madrid The Board of Directors of the Spanish Confederation of Historic Quarters (COCAHI) met on 5 June in Madrid at the Palacio de la Moncloa, with the heads of National Affairs and Culture of the Cabinet of the President of Spain, Cristina Ysasi-Ysasmendi and Manuel Barranco. COCAHI representatives presented the Santiago Declaration, a document containing measures to be taken by the various public administrations in Spain to promote, improve and ensure the
future viability of historic business districts. They had earlier held another meeting at the head office of Bankia with Fernando Sobrini Aburto, Assistant General Manager of Retail Banking, and Javier Gonzalez Pol, Business Manager, to discuss different possible agreements between the two institutions to try to provide small businesses in Spain with a major agreement allowing them to compete better against the advantages enjoyed by large corporations.

Estación 21, the event organized every season by Chulapa Flow Productions, took place once again on Saturday 20 June. This time it was to celebrate the Day of Music and so the Barrio de las Letras was filled with rhythm and live performances. There was a trail of national and international DJs – from Venezuela, Peru, Mexico, Colombia, the UK, Miami and Argentina – all invited by Conspiraciones Tropicales. The DJs provided the music for fashion shows, drama, dance shows, performances. The next event will be held on Saturday 19 September.

Varias personas, en este caso con mayoría de italianos, espera el comienzo de una de las diversas rutas organizadas para conocer mejor el Barrio de las Letras (‘Cervantes y el Barrio de las Letras’, de lunes a sábado, 17 euros. Más información: ‘Visitas guiadas’ en esmadrid.com). Ajustado el sonido de los auriculares, la guía comienza a explicar la historia de la Plaza Mayor y de la Puerta del Sol como enclaves cargados de tradiciones, ambos vecinos del Barrio de las Letras. La entrada a la zona que nos ocupa es la calle Pozo, donde se encuentra la Antigua Pastelería del Pozo, cuya placa revela el peso y sabor de su tradición: abrieron en 1830. A partir de ahí, la ruta continúa por la calle de la Cruz para llegar, después de pasar por la calle Álvarez Gato –y sus valleinclanescos espejos deformantes– a la calle San Sebastián, donde está la Iglesia de San Sebastián, en la que se dice está enterrado, entre otros personajes ilustres, Lope de Vega. Y al lado, en la actual floristería El Jardín del Ángel, había un cementerio sobre el que la guía evoca la historia del escritor José Cadarso: fue al camposanto a desterrar el cuerpo de su amada, fallecida unos días antes… y fue detenido por las autoridades.
Cultura a pie de calle Repuestos de la impresión, el periplo continúa al encuentro con Cervantes, por Huertas y, sobre todo, por la calle Lope de Vega –donde falleció–, para continuar y finalizar por Prado, al encuentro de la estatua dedicada al autor de 'Don Quijote de la Mancha' en la Plaza de las Cortes. Es aquí donde Carpetania (www. carpetaniamadrid.com), una empresa especializada en organizar visitas guiadas por Madrid –varias en el barrio, como una temática de Lope de Vega– comienza una de sus interesantes rutas. Juan Carlos González, historiador y uno de los socios de esta empresa histórico-cultural nos pone en situación: ‘‘Para empezar, desvelamos que don Miguel nos espera a dos

This street is home to Antigua Pastelería Pozo, whose plaque reveals the flavour of this bakery’s tradition: they opened in 1830. From there, the route continues along Calle de la Cruz, passing along Calle Álvarez Gato with its deforming mirrors made famous by Valle-Inclán, to Calle San Sebastián and its church of San Sebastián, where Lope de
Vega and other illustrious figures are said to be buried. Next door sits what today is the florist El Jardín del Ángel, where there was once a cemetery. At this point, our guide recounts the story of writer José Cardoso, who went to the holy ground to disinter the body of his lover, who had died a few days earlier, only to be arrested by the authorities. Culture on the Streets Resuming after this impressive stop, the tour continues towards our encounter with Cervantes, on Huertas, and especially on Calle Lope de Vega, where the writer died, before continuing along Prado where we find the statue dedicated to the author of Don Quixote, in the Plaza de las Cortes. It is

here that Carpetania (www.carpetaniamadrid.com), a company specialising in organising guided tours through Madrid, with many in the neighbourhood, including one focusing on Lope de Vega, begins one of its interesting routes. Juan Carlos González, historian and a partner in this historical and cultural company, gives us the lowdown: “To begin with, we reveal that don Miguel awaits us with two hands, as even though he lost the use of one, he was not the ‘One-Armed Man of Lepanto’.” Within a few minutes we make our way towards Calle San Agustín and from there to Calle Cervantes, witness of the arrival in the Golden Age hhh

manos, ya que, aunque perdió el manejo de una, no era El Manco de Lepanto’’. En unos minutos se enfila hacia la calle San Agustín y de ahí, a Cervantes, testigo de la llegada en tiempos del siglo de Oro de franceses, italianos, irlandeses… El especialista nos comenta también el paso anterior por la iglesia de Jesús de Medinaceli –‘‘donde se celebraba la misa de las Marías, llamada así porque las señoras se llamaban María Auxiliadora, María del Socorro, etc.’’–, así como uno de los hitos importantes de la ruta: la Casa Museo Lope de Vega: ‘‘Supone entrar en el Siglo de Oro, y estar en el sitio donde vivió y creó Lope’’. Un poco más arriba, se coincide en el paso por la casa en la que falleció Cervantes, para continuar por lLeón –‘‘la calle más comercial de aquellos tiempos, sede del Mentidero de Representantes, donde chismorreaban autores y artistas’’; la calle Lope de Vega, donde se encuentra el Convento de las Trinitarias y reciente lugar de acogida de los restos de Miguel de Cervantes, y Huertas, ‘‘calle de ocio, tabernas, mesones y hasta casas de tolerancia’’. Matute –en tiempos fue mercadillo– y Príncipe –con las historias del Palacio de Santoña, lo que fue el Parnasillo y la iglesia de San Ignacio de Loyola– y la plaza de Santa Ana marcan el final de este recorrido por las calles de un barrio caracterizado por la implantación de un comercio de calidad que linda, por el sur, con el 'Triángulo del Arte', donde se encuentra el Museo del Prado, la mejor pinacoteca del mundo. The guide tells us of the history of the church of Jesús de Medinaceli “where the Misa de las Marias was held, so-called because the women were named María Auxiliadora, María del Socorro, etc. Also here is another major point on the route: the Casa Museo Lope de Vega: “it is to step into the Golden Age, and to be in the house where Lope lived and worked.” A little bit further on up the road, we again pass the house where Cervantes died, continuing along Calle León, “the most commercial street in those times, and home to the Mentidero de Representantes, a sort of meeting point for discussion between authors and artists.” From there on to Calle Lope de Vega, where we find the Convento de las Trinitarias, recently confirmed as home to the remains of Miguel de Cervantes, and Huertas, “a street of entertainment, taverns, restaurants and even houses of ill repute.” Plaza de Matute, once a market, and Calle Príncipe, with the stories of the Palacio de Santoña, what was once the Parnasillo and the church of San Ignacio de Loyola, and Plaza Santa Ana, mark the end of this route through the streets of a neighbourhood still characterized by the quality retail outlets, its southern end delimited by the “Golden Triangle of Art” where we find the Museo del Prado, the greatest gallery in the world. History, culture and society combine for a real journey through time right here in the 21st century.

Juan Carlos González nos habla de otra ruta, cada dos sábados: ''Por la noche, conocemos la parte de arriba, y recordamos a Zorrilla, ValleInclán, Giacomo Casanova –que pasó por el 'barrio'–, hasta Ava Gardner, los toreros que venían a celebrar sus tardes de gloria e iban a los actuales tablaos flamencos, donde coincidían con la llamada 'gente del trueno', por el ruido que formaban con sus juergas… ''Esta ruta, con degustación incluida, cuenta también con una privilegiada y recomendable visita al Ateneo. Juan Carlos González tells us of another tour, taking place every second Saturday: “By night, we discover the upper end of the 'barrio' and we remember Zorilla, Valle-Incán, Giacamo Casanova – who passed through the area – and even Ava Gardner. And the bullfighters who came to celebrate their evenings of glory, frequenting the flamenco venues, where they fraternised with those known as the “thunder people,” for the noise they made with their revelry...” This route, with tasting included, also comes with a privileged and highly-recommended visit to the Ateneo.

¿Qué destacarías de su relación con el barrio? Además de mi obvia relación profesional, destacaría la personal: hace años, cuando era joven (sonríe) salía por la zona, ahora menos, por cuestiones profesionales y obligaciones familiares. Pero se me puede ver haciendo deporte por sus calles, ya que suelo ir a correr desde mi gimnasio (Metropolitan Santa Ana, también en el barrio) hasta el Retiro (Paco es un activo deportista, participante en maratones, 'ironman', etc).
What stands out in your relationship with the area? As well as my obvious professional relationship, I’d point to the personal. Years ago, when I was young [smiles], I used to go out in the area. Less so now, for professional and family reasons. But you can see me out exercising in the street; I usually run from my gym (Metropolitan Santa Ana, also in the neighbourhood) to the Retiro Park. (Paco is an avid sportsman, participating regularly in marathons and ironman triathlons.)
Pronto vas a cumplir 30 años de relación directa con la gastronomía. ¿Sospechabas en algún momento que ibas a tener tanto auge? Nunca me imaginé el impacto mediático, social, que iba a alcanzar todo lo que rodea a la gastronomía. Ni la repercusión que puede llegar a tener nuestro trabajo, por ejemplo en la promoción de la Marca España: la mat eria prima y el producto viajan con nosotros no solo en nuestros restaurantes, sino también en eventos, congresos, etc.
¿Qué parte de Paco Roncero podemos encontrar en Estado Puro y qué público acude a él? Trabajamos, desde 2008, sobre un concepto de la tapa tradicional con presentaciones renovadas y un especial cuidado en el tratamiento del producto. Contamos con la ventaja de estar en la intersección entre el Museo del Prado, el Thyssen y el Reina Sofía, que convierten a Madrid en una ciudad inimitable y por ello contamos con mucho público que no es de Madrid: al mediodía diría que un 80-20%; por la tarde-noche un 50%.
¿Y qué parte encontramos en tu restaurante del Casino de Madrid y en su taller, toda una experiencia para los sentidos?

You’ll soon be celebrating 30 years in the world of gastronomy. Did you ever suspect you were going to be successful? I never imagined the level of media or social impact that everything to do with gastronomy would reach. Or the repercussion that our work can come to have, for example, for the promotion of Spain as a brand: we take the raw material and the produce with us, not only in our restaurants but also to events, congresses, etc. What side of Paco Roncero can we find at Estado Puro and what sort of people go there? En cuanto al taller, la necesidad de no dejar de crecer, de evolucionar, nos hizo juntarnos con el talento de otras profesiones para ver de qué manera podríamos hacer de la gastronomía una experiencia de verdad. En nuestro taller (está en el mismo edificio del restaurante), queremos ofrecer una experiencia única no solo por lo que hay en el plato, sino por lo que puede suceder alrededor de una mesa con pantalla, sonido, etc.
Lo mismo das de comer a unas pocas personas que a un gran evento. ¿Cómo se dosifica la ‘marca Roncero’ para agradar a ambos tipos de público? Al final, hay que extrapolar: hay platos que hacemos para 20 que no valen para más, pero otros muchos que, con pequeños cambios, lo puedes hacer para 300 o 400 comensales. Unos metros más arriba se encuentra una de las entradas –o salidas, según se mire– del Barrio de las Letras, la Plaza del Ángel –antaño conocida como plazuela–. DecorAcción, organized by Nuevo Estilo magazine, the Barrio de las Letras Business Association and Madrid City Council, once again proved to be the premiere decoration and interiors event in Spain for another year. This year, from 11 – 14 June, the Barrio de las Letras was the canvas for interior designers, artists, architects and designers to give
free reign to their creativity. They took over squares, decorated businesses and let loose on the façades of the area’s buildings. And in 2015 DecorAcción went international, with several internationally renowned interior designers arriving in the neighbourhood with fantastic ideas. Among others were Pascua Ortega, Pepe Leal, Melián Randolph, Erico

ecorAccion, organizado por la revista Nuevo Estilo, la Asociación de Comerciantes del Barrio de las Letras y el Ayuntamiento de Madrid, ha vuelto a convertirse en el gran evento de la decoración y el interiorismo en España una edición más. Y ya van seis. Entre el 11 y el 14 de junio, el Barrio de las Letras fue el lienzo donde interioristas, decoradores, artistas, arquitectos y diseñadores dieron rienda suelta a su creatividad. (Alameda, 15). Something spectacular was going on in every corner of the neighbourhood, and while everyone participated in this great interiors festival, some really stood out, catching the eyes of

Estos profesionales, con trabajos por todo el mundo, dieron su toque personal al Espacio (Y) en la Plaza de las Cortes o en la fantástica instalación gastronómica ubicada dentro de Medialab-Prado (Alameda, 15). El barrio entero se llenó de rincones espectaculares, todos participaron en esta gran fiesta de la decoración, pero destacan algunos que acapararon todas las miradas de los visitantes. The Plaza de las Letras, with work by Ikea, and the MedialabPrado building proved to be the nerve centre of DecorAccion, with events around interior design, gastronomy and flowers, along with workshops, taking place between 11 a.m. and 11 p.m. Meanwhile, the now traditional and bustling
Antiques Market was set up on the streets, across Calles Cervantes, Quevedo, San Pedro and San Agustín. Some 62 antique dealers brought their best pieces out into the streets. Furniture, dishware, craftwork, decorative pieces and works of art all piqued the curiosity of visitors, who were able to browse the wide range

12d interiorismo, gastronomía, flores y talleres entre las 11 y las 23 horas. Mientras, el ya tradicional Mercadillo de Antigüedades, muy concurrido, se desarrolló en torno a las calles de Cervantes, Quevedo, San Pedro y San Agustín. Hasta 62 anticuarios sacaron sus mejores piezas a la calle. Muebles, vajillas, artesanía, objetos de decoración, piezas de arte... Los visitantes, muy curiosos, pudieron comprobar la enorme oferta de los anticuarios del barrio. La novedad de este año fue que, complementario a este, la calle Moratín disfrutó también de un Mercadillo Pop Up donde se concentraron hasta 20 puestos de piezas y accesorios de decoración con un horario similar al del Mercadillo de Antigüedades.

Another new addition this year was a parallel Pop Up Market in Calle Moratín, where some 20 stalls were set up offering decorative items and accessories with hours similar to the Antiques Market. Creativity in the Streets All visitors –and there were many this year- could take in the enormous display of
creativity on the neighbourhood’s façades with fabric playing an important role this year. From Plazuela del Ángel to Plaza de Neptuno, there were displays at the Ateneo, Platerías López and the Hotel NH Palacio de Tepa. Add to that the work of Spanish interior designers in almost 100 local businesses. Restaurants, shops and bars were all overflowing with

He was born in Navarre but got to know Madrid after visiting several times until he finally settled in the capital city in 1987 where he’s been an Official Chronicler since 2007. He lives in Cascorro, quite close to the Barrio de las Letras which he knows so very well.

ació en Navarra, pero conocía Madrid por múltiples visitas hasta que, en 1987, se instaló en la capital, de la que, desde 2007, es Cronista Oficial. Vive en Cascorro, muy cerca del Barrio de las Letras que tan bien conoce. ¿Qué supone ser Cronista de la Villa? Lo soy desde 2007, nombrado por el Pleno del Ayuntamiento de Madrid, y supone todo un honor, que me compromete a aportar opiniones y ideas cuando nos lo solicita algún departamento municipal sobre, por ejemplo, monumentos, adjudicación de nombres a espacios públicos, etc. ¿Desde cuándo conoce el barrio y cuál es su vinculación con él? Mi primer contacto fue con el Teatro Español en 1973: vivía en Navarra y venía de vez en cuando. Descubrí la historia del Siglo de Oro y del siglo 62

XVIII y, desde hace años, soy absolutamente asiduo, vengo todos los días De hecho, prepara una obra sobre el Teatro Español… En efecto, he escrito siete libros en doce años relacionados con el teatro –el más reciente sobre el Lara– y estoy trabajando en una obra sobre los 400 años de Teatro Español. Conoce bien a las instituciones municipales, ¿qué les pediría? Que hay que promocionar mejor un entorno histórico y cultural como este, cuidarlo, mimarlo. Al visitante se le pueden ofrecer muchas cosas, pero debe haber una coordinación en horarios y servicios para conseguir un mejor resultado. Hay mucho que ver y disfrutar, y tiene que ser más accesible, organizado, con los horarios más racionales.

What does it mean to be a City Chronicler? I’ve held this position since 2007 after being nominated by the City Council of Madrid and it’s quite the honour as my commitment is to offer opinions and ideas when requested from any of the municipal departments in relation to monuments, the naming of public areas, etc. In fact, you’re preparing some literature on the Teatro Español… Yes, I’ve written seven books in twelve years related to theatre – the most recent one was on the Lara Theatre – and I’m now working on a book about the 400 years of the Teatro Español. You know the municipal institutions well. What would you ask of them? We have to better promote historical and cultural environments like this, care for them and pamper them. You can offer visitors many things, but there has to be coordination as far as timetables and services in order to achieve better results. There’s a lot to see and enjoy and it has to be more accessible, organised, with more reasonable hours.
