Sarasota Museum of Art + addition The following project is located in the Sarasota, Floirida area. Intended as an addition to the existing Sarasota Highschool which was originally designed in the early 1920’s by a local Sarasota architect. The objective was to consider the integrity of the existing shell while incorporating the new museum addition with sensitivity. The museum would house contemporary works from local and internationally known artists . The museum would exhibit paintings, sculptures, and installations for the local community creating a connection to the already rich Sarasota art district with new work from both leading and up and coming artists from around the world. The concept model to my right is a simple conceptual gesture that anchors the existing shell of the historic school leaving the facade to be viewed and not inhibited by the new intervention .

Sarasota Museum of Art + addition Section Detail view expresses the structural intent of the project. The open view to below from the second and third level terrace allows for natural light, and defines the conceptual and poetic relationship between the existing (school) and the new museum. Through the use of materials and detailed connections the building expresses a rich tectonic quality. According to the needs of the museum the use of light has been strategically utilized to accomodate both the needs of the gallery spaces and providing the necessary views to the exterior connecting the public realm with the interior of the building. The left section view clearly defines the celebration between the old and the new allowing a well lit and covered area for pedestrian circulation and transition between indoor outdoor spaces creating an inviting natural condition.

Conceptual Diagram The following diagram shows the axis point between the existing massing (yellow), and the addition (nectar), and the main entrance (Gray) which acts as both separator and a mediator between the two worlds. The solid massing of the addition is positioned perpendicular to the existing mass and projected outward hovering toward the existing street acting as an anchor greeting you to the front entrance of the museum

Screen Study Diagram

Objective The purpose of the screen is to filter light during the morning and before the sunset in contrary with noon. The punctures are placed and assorted to density, specifically limiting complete permeability and allowing specific quantities of light throughout.

Traveling GALLERY Two gallery spaces that are simple volumetric voids projected outside of the rigid skin framed shell that houses traveling exhibits. They are located on the west corner and the east facade. Visually and programatically placed an connected for public view from street and from main public entrance

east GALLERY

Sarasota Museum of Art + addition The photomontage assumes the richness and quality of space surrounding the exterior portion of the programed public areas . The ground condition contains reflective pools in sequence with a series of terraced steps, leading the public to experience the earthly quality of the exterior cladding of the buildings facade. The paths are well defined and reveal themselves as subtle gestures inviting the pedestrian walking along the main vehicular path from either direction. The overhang facing US41 provides both relief and shade necessary for the Florida climate. Facing west and hinged on the corner of the site it provides a public space for gathering before a major exhibit or simply a place to rest for people passing by.

1 Pinellas County Elder Housing + Community The purpose of this project was to provide housing for returning wounded veterans. Main goal was to accomodate approximately 240 housing units while relocating existing offices on the site with a 20,000 square feet facility.

Pinellas County Elder Housing + Community Unit type Study The following modular diagram shows the interlocking nature of the block unit types as they are assembled and systematically arranged to provide for convenience and efficiency of space both condusive to the tropical climate. The solid masses represent the residential units as conditoned spaces. The inter-locking nature of the mudules attach and link with specific voids that account for outdoor public space

section / UNIT TYPE The following L shape configuration is taking advantage of possible square footage, while creating double high living spaces for the residence. Each mudule sets in place and repeats itself for efficiency. High ceilings are also necessary when designing spaces in humid climates.

Pinellas County Elder Housing + Community Living The building type and modular relationship created in between each unit type, allows for healthy interaction among the residents. With the inclusion of the courtyard spaces, the complex gives a more engaged communal sensibility to the occupants making for a much richer public environment. The interlocking nature of the units and the intentional manipulation of voids, create an outdoor space that is both passive in design and very considerate to florida climate.

Site

Chicago Commercial + Residential Tower Located near downtown Chicago the site has a direct view of both Lake Michigan, and the Chicago River. The program objective was to design a multi-use tower with skycourts, while taking into consideration the orientation of the site and the traditions and culture of the local community and area.

Conceptual collage

02. 1

Chicago / Commercial + Residential Tower conceptual model The two study models to the left are conceptual iterations generated from 2- dimensional collage study representation in 3 dimensional form. The idea was to take the layered forms abstractly collage them through figureground and represent them in raw physical form. The process developed two extruded idea models that are theoretical representations of the grid city layout. combined with linear systems, layered montage images, and space and order studies. The models took shape in creating a rich visual tower as a system that speaks the language of structure, spatiallity, and form.

tower + Skycourts structural model The skycourts act as a buffer between neighborhoods to link the public open spaces with each type module. Each skycourt varies based on function and size. The seperation between the unit tyes allows for a very passive design scheme. Air flow and circulation of breeze will allow for cooling during the aggressive summer sun. Natural ventilation could also be considered as the buildings core is opened and permeable with each unit attachement at a distance from one another.

TEAR + SKYCOURTS Section Diagram The section drawing diagram to the right expresses the relative relationship between the tears and the skycourt interventions. tear 1-5 represent the hierarchical relationship between ground and sky based upon occupancy and monetary wealth. Within Tear 1 resides the commercial realm where the urban edge exist, connecting the local community to the residential tower. Both tears 2 and 3 are residential neighborhoods containing the midto high rise level residential units. Tears 4-5 are exclusive residential penthouse suites with advantageous views with prime visceral location.

Concept Model of Tower

TAMPA / Commercial + Residential Tower project objective Located near the Hillsborough River in downtown Tampa, the site is in need of a new and progressive multi-use tower. The design would encorporate inovation and bring together elements of urban philosophy through the design of a vertical tower. Taking into consideration the fundamental elements learned from the previous design scheme in Chicago, the Tampa tower would be approached with a sensitive eye looking at the local context of the downtown area and restitching the desperately needed urban fabric with a new edge condition that connects the local community.

The Tampa area in recent years is striving to better the city fabric by making a more pedestrian friendly urban environment. With the recently developed Kyle Park, and new Museum of Contemporary arts which runs parallel to the Hillsborough River, the city has seen a significant shift in community awareness and involvement in the downtown area. The weekly events that spark local sprawl in the downtown district has sparked a need for a residential multi-use tower that will serve as a functional vertical urban neighborhood that accommodates the desires of the business district.

02. 2

Massing + Site Model The massing model shows the exact location of site relative to surrounding context. The Hillsborough River, Kyle Park, and the Museum are all very important conditions that exist on site to tie together the much needed pedestrian culture.

connecting + Hillsborough River The Hillsborough River brings life to the local area. Located a block from the site the river is a fundamental public body of water that is utilized by local community and the University of Tampa. The river becomes active with younger crowds as a recreational hub for kayakers, boaters, and sunbathers.

Collage The collage is a theoretical representation of figure ground relationship of Tampa city grid. Used purely as a generator of ideas, the conceptual drawing is interpretive and exploratory in nature

The Silhouette The design will stand out above the other building types. It will visually connect the tower to the river and situate itself above the other buildings as a symbol of urban progressive thinking and green initiative.

Residential

Commercial

TAMPA / Commercial + Residential Tower section study The following section diagrams are informative of the Unit + Public space relationship. Each unit type is distinctly different and locates themselves strategically along the structural spine. With the open spaces between each tear the design becomes passive in nature and is sensitive to the Florida climate. The skycourts are each distinct in themselves as they all serve a different purpose based upon location within the tower. The main skycourt, located at the center of the tower will be a viewing space that also includes a green roof, park, and public swimming pool.

Tianjin / Urban Design+ CHINA Pathological Geomorphology The Tianjin area is located a couple hours outside of Beijing. The area use to be a rich prospering agricutural farming community with a thriving economy. Due to mass industrialization and big construction. In recent years the land has suffered and has slowly developed into a poorly germinated city by bad planning and evident sprawl. With the combination of poor public transportation, and non-pedestrian friendly city planning. The people and economy of Tianjin have payed the price. Due to the lack of natural agriculture in the area, the city currently struggles with polluted waters and polluted air. Team3. Zinnia Villamor+Sean Smith+Juan Felipe Sanchez

SIte Location + CHINA Pathological Geomorphology The plan diagram to my left is describing the location of density that will be considered when incorporating the new Mega-City blocks. The typology figure-ground above shows the building type relationships creating open courtyards that will be used for public parks and agriculture. The strategy is to use as much natural conditions that exist without compromising the integrity of the city fabric and the culture of Tianjin

MEGA+ block section ground view

Zoning + GREEN BELT Pathological Geomorphology By incorporting specific green networks such as Waterway stops, linear parks, set zoning for agriculture, and food cultivation, along with the introduction of natural green superhighways, the process of revitalizing the currently polluted river systems will slowley make significant changes to the surrounding context, people, and cultures of Tianjin. The model to the right of this page is showing the pedestrian edge conditions considered for local foot traffic. The building type treats the ground with a tear effect of low level buildings housing commercial program while utilizing the green roofs for water collection and irrigation supply for the local community.

MEGA + complex Pathological Geomorphology The newly envisioned MEGA + complex has a vision for a major urban place making project designed to encourage residents of the area back to the center of Tianjin, China. The MEGA+complex is designed to reverse the sort of decentralization in the city due to current conditions. The design solution includes adapted passive strategies, density, green walks, with roof canopies, creating solid and sustainable architecture in what was a poorly developed city. This is a truly unique approach that takes into consideration many different ideologies with respect to the human population and while preserving the surrounding natural elements

MEGA + complex THE RIVER + WALK Local Tianjin residence are occupying the river walk as it meanders through the city capturing inviting views from the green park. As the city successfully develops, it becomes a self sustaining example of the quality of life in Tianjin, the city of the future. The circulation paths that surround the water ways are natural filters that collect and protect the natural river system from further contamination

To the right the image is a photomontage layered study of the naturally defining influential lines that exist in the city grid. To the left the physical assemblage is a matrix based design scheme developed through a rigorous analysis of the site.

the FINAL MODEL

Thinking + Making Light study of the spaces developed from the final model. It is clear that there is an order and orgnization of the systems arranged in accordance with the idea of place and place making.

design+DEVELOPMENT The museum of modern art was designed during the fall semester of advanced design A studio. It was used to facilitate the necessary scale and programmatic function and size for developing a detailed document for design development. The tectonic exploration and structural innovations used for the studio project were beneficial for detailed analysis and further augmentation.

design+STRUCTURE Steel grid frame and cast in place concrete plates were used for the structural membrane of the project. The wide flange vertical and horizontal beams were placed 20 foot along the length of the project to provide rigidity and structural integrity to the framework.

Osmose Linfen, China Problem

Named the dirtiest place of the planet, to spend one day in Linfen is the same as smoking 3 packs of cigarettes. Linfen deliver what any country of over 1 billion of people need, 1 ton of energy. A landscape of oil spewing a bunch of toxic chemicals into the air and poisoning the land and the water, there are no clouds just permanent toxic fumes hovering the city. Linfen is an industrial city with a population of 4.1 million people, situated in the center of the Shanxi province. The primary energy source of Shanxi area is coal, everyday thousands of trucks full of coal go between Linfen and the rest of china's cities. Utilizing coal without pollution is a global dilemma.

Solution

The tower is conceived as a vertical extrusion. Twisting its way up is a response to the equatorial sunpath, receiving more direct sunlight towards the clad facade with the algae screen. The shape of the tower also responds to the prevailing winds, so the algae screen can feed on carbon dioxide and filter the air. The tower is a multi-use structure divided into three parts; residential area, public area and industrial area. The residential area comprises a vertical algae field, residences, offices, health center, community spaces, four main sky refuge areas, and three skycourts. The public section offers plazas, parks, organic market, restaurants, retail commerce, boardwalks, riverwalks, bike lanes, transportation rail station and parking. The industrial area includes labs, offices, mills to process the algae, boilers area, turbine room, clarification area, distillation room, power distribution room, storage space, dispatch garage, and parking.

Osmose

Carbondioxide + Algae = Ethanol

The residential portion will house displace farmers. The farmers will maintain the the algae to the highest standard and algae will feed on the exsesive carbon dioxide in the environment. Refuge areas will provide relaxation and meditation spaces. Skycourts will provide for additional algae pools and vertical farming. The public area will serve as a pedestrian connector between the residential, the industrial portion, and the urban fabric. Restaurants and retail will benefit from the pedestrian circulation happening at the plazas parks as well as the market, which will distribute all the goods coming from the residential farming. The Industrial section will receive all the algae produced on the residential portion through the algae duct system. Algae will pass through the plant distillation process to generate power back to the tower, for the sale of ethanol and other components. Ethanol trucks will be waiting to be filled up and forward to other locations in demand for this source of energy.
