GOOSE ISLAND IS AN ISOLATED HEAVY INDUSTRY ISLAND TO THE NORTH OF DOWNTOWN CHICAGO. THE ISLAND IS USED AS A PLACE OF TRANSIT, MEANING A LARGE PORTION OF PEOPLE WHO MAKE IT TO GOOSE ISLAND ARE MERELY PASSING THROUGH THE ISLAND; WE WANT PEOPLE GOING TO GOOSE ISLAND. BY MANIPULATING THE MANNER IN WHICH ONE CIRCULATES THROUGH THE ISLAND, THE INTENT IS TO TRANSFORM GOOSE ISLAND INTO THE SILICON VALLEY OF THE MIDWEST. BY ADJUSTING THE INFRASTRUCTURE OF THE ISLAND TO INCORPORATE TWO MAIN CIRCULATION LOOPS, WE DRASTICALLY ALTER HOW THE ISLAND IS PERCEIVED AND USED. GOOSE ISLAND BECOMES A NEW TECH HUB THAT REVITALIZES THE NEAR NORTH SIDE NEIGHBORHOODS AND CREATES A NEW IDENTITY FOR THE ISLAND AS CHICAGO’S NEW LOOP.

INNER RING: THE INNER RING IS FOR VEHICLE CIRCULATION, THIS ALLOWS THE LOGISTICAL PORTION OF THE TECH INDUSTRY TO OCCUR WITIN ITS OWN CORIDORS AND ONLY USE A NECESSARY OF THE ISLAND. ALTHOUGH PROXIMITIES ARE VERY CLOSE, TREES AND SCULPTURAL PIECES ARE USED TO MITIGATE TRAFFIC NOISE I NTO THE CAMPUS AREA
OUTER RING: WITH THE INTENT OF FOR GOOSE ISLAND TO HAVE A CAMPUS-LIKE ATMOSPHERE, THE OUTER RING IS FOR PEDESTRIAN USE. BY ADDING INFRASTRUCTURE THE OUTER RING MAINTAINS CONTINUOUS WITHIN THE ISLAND AS WELL AS ALLOWING ACESS ON AND OFF GOOSE ISLAND.

THERMOCLINE INCLINE
ARCH 465 | SPRING 2014 | INSTRUCTOR: SEAN LALLY CHICAGO, IL | LAKE FRONT
THERMOCLINE INCLINE IS A LANDSCAPE DEVELOPMENT THAT USES TEMPERATURE IN ORDER TO EXPLOIT THE DIFFERENT CLIMATES THROUGHOUT THE OZONE LAYER, IN WHICH THE SHIFTS WITHIN THE ATMOSPHERE ARE COMPRESSED INTO FOUR THERMOCLINES. THE DRASTIC CLIMATE SHIFTS IN THIS CONCENTRATED SPACE IS MEANT TO ALTER A PERSONS PERCEPTION OF WHAT THEIR CLIMATE OF CHOICE IS. A PERSON ALSO CHOOSES A SPECIFIC THERMOCLINE DEPENDING ON THE TIME OF YEAR. THE CLIMATE WITHIN THE DEVELOPMENT IS ALSO ALTERED DEPENDING ON THE SEASON AND SEVERITY OF WEATHER, RENDERING THE THERMOCLINES TO BE FUNCTIONAL YEAR-ROUND. A PERSON CAN BE AT THE SAME ELEVATION AS ANOTHER PERSON, BUT BEING IN TWO DIFFERENT DEPENDING ON THE NATURAL WIND CURRENT. THE PUBLIC PARK IS REDEFINED WITH THIS TOPOGRAPHICAL ADDITION BY OFFERING AN UNCONVENTIONAL SEATING AREA. THIS RESTING AREA CAN BE USED TO COOL DOWN OR WARM UP DURING THE DIFFERENT TIMES OF THE YEAR. THE WIND CURRENTS ROLE ALLOWS FOR THE THERMOCLINES TO INCREASE AND DECREASE IN SPACE, BEING SO IT ALTERS WHERE A PERSON IS GOING TO OCCUPY SPACE WITHIN THE DEVELOPMENT.

ARCH 366 | SPRING 2014 | INSTRUCTOR: CHRISTOPHER FRYE MIAMI, FL | ART DISTRICT MIAMI’S WATER FRONT HAS BECOME A HUB FOR THE ARTS, JUST SOUTH OF THE PEREZ ART MUSEUM MIAMI THERE LIES THE THEATER COMPLEX. IN THIS PARTICULAR INVESTIGATION WE DESIGN THREE PIECES OF FURNITURE THAT COMPLIMENT ONE ANOTHER. ONCE THE FURNITURE IS COMPLETE, THE INTERIOR FOR THE LOBBY IS DESIGNED TO COMPLIMENT THE FURNITURE.THERE ARE FOUR DISTINCT THEATERS THAT ARE COVERED IN INDIVIDUAL EXTERIOR SHELLS. THESE THEATER SHELLS ARE REFINED TO PHYSICALLY CONJOIN THE THEATERS INTO ONE PHYSICAL STRUCTURE. ATTACHED THERE IS ALSO A FIFTH SHELL THAT COMPLETES THE OVERALL STRUCTURE. THIS FIFTH SHELL IS THE EXTENSIVE LOBBY. UNLIKE THE AVERAGE ONE DIRECTIONAL LOBBY, THIS LOBBY BECOMES A PUBLIC REALM IN WHICH IT INVITES PEOPLE CIRCULATE AND SOCIALIZE. THERE ARE POCKETS THROUGHOUT THE STRUCTURE THAT SEPARATE THEATER, EDUCATION, PRACTICE ROOMS, RESTAURANTS AND GALLERY SPACE. ALTHOUGH IT IS A THEATER COMPLEX, IT PROPOSES MIX-USE ASPIRATIONS THAT WILL ALLOW AN EXTENSIVE AGENDA FOR OPTIMAL USE.

RECOMBINES THE TYPICAL ELEMENTS OF THE AMERICAN RURAL LANDSCAPE (ROADS, FARMS, TOWNS) ON A RADIAL AND LINEAR MEGA STRUCTURAL LANDSCAPE. THIS NEW FORM ALLOWS FOR GREATER POPULATION TO CO-EXIST WITH THE AGRICULTURAL LANDSCAPE WHILE AT THE SAME TIME ALLOWS CONTINUITY ACROSS THE GROWING AND DISTRIBUTION OF AGRICULTURAL PRODUCE. RESIDENTS ARE ABLE TO SUSTAIN THEMSELVES AT THE MICRO LEVEL WITH LOCAL AGRICULTURAL CULTIVATION WHILE SIMULTANEOUSLY PARTICIPATE IN THE COMMERCIAL PRODUCTION OF CROPS & MEAT.THIS ALTERS THE FARMING INDUSTRY AS A MORE EVENLY DISTRIBUTED ECONOMY, CREATING A NEW DNA OF AMERICAN LANDSCAPE.

CHARNLEY HOUSE REVAMPED ARCH 206 | SPRING 2013 | INSTRUCTOR: JULIE FLOHR CHICAGO, IL | GOLD COAST NEIGHBORHOOD THE CHARNLEY HOUSE RESIDENCE WAS DESIGNED BY LOUIS SULLIVAN & FRANK LLOYD WRIGHT IN 1892. IT IS A NATIONAL LANDMARK AND IS LOCATED ON THE NORTH SIDE OF CHICAGO. CHARNLEY HOUSE REVAMPED AMPLIFIES THE IDEA OF THE DEEP EXTRUDED WINDOWS BY MANIPULATING THE EXTRUSIONS TWO POINTS AT A TIME. THIS ALLOWS FOR THE SHAPE OF THESE EXTRUSIONS TO GAIN OR LOSE VOLUME. THE EXTRUSIONS PUNCTURE THROUGH THE FRAME OF THE BUILDING ALLOWING FOR NATURAL ILLUMINATION AND A PERSPECTIVE CHANGE OF WALL DIRECTION. BY ALLOWING THE EXTRUDED FORMS TO OVERLAP EACH OTHER AND NATURAL LIGHT TO ENTER FROM ALL ANGLES ,THE USERS PERSPECTIVE OF SPACE CHANGES AS CIRCULATION OCCURS THROUGHOUT THE HOUSE.
