The USA "Stars & Stripes": The 50 stars on the flag represent the 50 states and the 13 stripes represent the thirteen British colonies that rebelled against the British monarchy and became the first states in the Union.

History In 1492 Christopher Columbus discovered the "New World". In 1607 an English settlement is founded in Jamestown, Virginia. Twelve years later the first African slaves are brought to the area. In 1620, English pilgrims settle in Massachusetts. At the 18th century the colonial settlers rebel against British rule on the east coast. After the War of Independence, 13 colonies sign the Declaration of Independence and form the USA (1776).

During the 19th and 20th centuries the north and south of the country fight in the Civil War. The north won and 37 new states are added. In October of 1929 the stock market crash and it formed the great depression. Also black people fight to obtain equal rights. Nowadays The USA is a world superpower that has been victim of terrorist attacks and the world still remembers the attack to the twin towers. It has recently pulled out from war in Irak & Afghanistan. Obama is now present president.

Geography The USA is part of the North American continent. It is one of the largest countries in the world. There are five main geographical areas in the USA. The Atlantic and Gulf Coastal Plain runs north to south along the Atlantic coast from NY to Mexico. The Appalachian Highlands are a line of low mountain ranges which separate the east coast from the Great Lakes and the Mississippi Basin. The Great Plains lie west of the Mississippi River. They form the USA's most important agricultural area, producing most of the country's grain as well as soya beans and page 1

livestock meats. West of the Great Plains are the Cordilleran Highlands. They include the Rocky Mountains and the Sierra Nevada and Cascade mountain ranges and contain some of the highest mountains in the country. Between the two mountain ranges there is large area of desert with spectacular features, such as the Grand Canyon in Arizona. Finally the Pacific Slope includes the valleys of California, Oregon and Washington. The crests of the Rocky Mountains are known as the Continental Divide. The Mississippi is the longest river in the USA. It flows for about 3900 km.

L.A. Los Angeles, often known by its initials L.A., is the most populous city in the state of California, and the second most populous in the United States, after New York City. It has an area of 1,213.8 km2, and is located in Southern California. Is one of the most populous metropolitan areas in the world and the second largest in the United States and at the same time is one of the most multicultural. The city's inhabitants are referred to as "Angelenos". Los Angeles was founded on September 4, 1781, by Spanish governor. It became a part of Mexico. Later the USA bought the city.

Nowadays Los Angeles has been ranked the third richest city and fifth most powerful and influential city in the world. New York City New York is a leading global city. It is also an important centre for international affairs, hosting the United Nations headquarters. NY was given its first official name by native America Indians who settled on an island on the Hudson River and called it Manhattan (meaning 'large island'). The name changed to New Amsterdam in 1624 where Dutch settlers bought the island for the equivalent of $26! Finally, when the English took control in 1664 they changed the name to New York in honour of the duke of York. The city also has many nicknames. One of these is 'the big apple', because when you go to Manhattan you pick the big apple of the tree of success. Other nickname like Gotham was used in batman's stories, to speak about 'the city that never sleeps'. The population of New York has grown from only 270 people in 1642 to over 8 million today! It is the most populated city in the USA. 36% of the population was born outside of the states and about 170 different languages are spoken. History Happy holidays from to yours! Ireland was not inhabited untilour family dominated by hunger due to the 9.500 years ago. It is believed the first people arrived crossing a piece of land that used to unite it to Scotland. In the fourth millennium before Christ, Neolithic’s people built stone walls and monumental tombs. With the Celts, iron ages arrived to Ireland. In this period, there were 100 clans. In the 5th Century, the country became Christian. At the end of the 8th Century Celt Ireland was conquered by the Vikings. After that, Enrique II and the English Crown controlled Ireland. In the 19th Century, Ireland was

Important cities. Part I New Zealand has a lot of important cities, like Queenstown or the capital of the Island, Wellington, but now we are going to talk about Auckland. Auckland is one of the most important cities, it has over a million habitants in the metropolitan area, and this city is the biggest in the island by far. Its also called “The City of Salis.”

The city is located in the North Island, on narrow isthmus of land that joins the Northland peninsula to the rest of the North Island, it also is important because its near of everywhere; in 30 minutes you can be on the beach, or at the forest seeing wild animals in their natural

environment. This is one of the most important cities because of its important monuments, for example, the Museum of Auckland or the Sky Tower. At the Sky Tower, you can climb it to the top and when you are there, you can see the full city and it marvellous landscape. Important cities. Part II Another one of the most important cities in the country is Wellington, the official capital of the State, and also the biggest capital of all Oceania. This city is located at the South of the Northern Island; this one is the second important city in the country, after Auckland. At this city there are some interesting places like the coast of Kapiti and the mountains Rimutaka. The city is home to Te Papa, the national museum, which tells the story of New Zealand’s history through bold and interactive exhibits. In Wellington you’ll discover an amazing range of cafes, art galleries, theatres, attractions and a humming nightlife. The gourmet and wine experiences of the Wairarapa region are also just a short drive away. All the Saturdays in the underground there is a market, it begins at 10 a.m. and it ends at 4 p.m. and there you can enjoy the live music from some of Wellington's finest musicians and experience why the whole family will love the Wellington Underground Market.

Top ten things to do/ see In New Zealand, you can do quite many things: 1- Bungee jumping: at the country there are a lot of places where you can jump with a rope, one of the most famous places to do bungee jumping is in the observatory of New Zealand, it has an altitude of 450 meters. 2- Swimming with sharks: at the Poor Knights Islands you can visit the sharks inside of a metal cage (is a dangerous experience). 3- Visit Maori settlements: at New Zealand you can enter to a tour and visit the old Maori settlements and learn their culture and traditions, for example: the Maori dance or the way that the Maori say “HELLO”.

4- Drive along the Pacific coast: travel by car around New Zealand is a good way to discover the marvellous wildlife of the country, also you can contemplate the ocean while you are driving you car on the road, or visit the forest and see the curious animals inside it. 5- Visit the Eastern Bays routes: New Zealand is an epic surf destination situated well into the roaring forties and exposed to the wider Pacific Ocean, its perfectly positioned to receive waves from 360° year round. Surfing in New Zealand is a remarkable experience; the coast is so diverse from the sub-tropical northland beaches to the Antartic cold catlins surf in southland.

But also, if you like to walk, you can visit the canyons by foot and see from near the landscape. 9- Visit the scenarios of the “The Lord of the Rings”, because there, some parts of the film were filmed at there. One of the places is Matamata, or Takaka Hill. 10- Go to the Treble Cone and ski: you can enjoy the landscape of the snowed mountains and practice some ski there, because during all year round, there is snow in some of the mountains.
