Get Britain Buzzing With Bulbs
Communal bulb planting A new initiative for your residents
‘Get Britain Buzzing’ is a campaign by Buglife, which aims to highlight the crisis facing British pollinators and to transform grassland in our urban parks, in gardens and along road verges into colourful species-rich wildflower and grassland meadows. A massive 97% (over 3,000,000 hectares) of flower-rich grassland have been lost in the UK since the 1940’s. This loss has contributed towards a serious decline in flower-rich areas that are vital habitats for wild bees, butterflies and other insects to nest and feed. Flower bulbs can be a perfect addition to the habitats because they produce their flowers early in the spring when not many other flowers are available to pollinators.
Contribute to ‘Green Happiness’ and biodiversity by planting bulbs It is no longer necessary to explain that ‘green’ makes happy; recently, this has also been scientifically proven. Green in the city also improves the environment, creates more biodiversity, reduces air pollution, ensures water storage, dampens noise and keeps us cool during a warm period. In short, green is essential for a climate-proof and sustainable environment. In addition, it has a positive effect on people’s health and contributes to the quality of life in a neighbourhood. By planting bulbs together, a social cohesion is created: after all, what people plant themselves will also be appreciated more!
Buglife – The Invertebrate Conservation Trust is a UK registered charity since 2002, and is the only organisation in Europe devoted to the conservation of all invertebrates. Main campaigns are ‘Get Britain Buzzing’ and B-Lines. B-Lines are an imaginative and beautiful solution to the problem of the loss of flowers and pollinators. The B-Lines are a series of ‘insect pathways’ running through our countryside and towns, along which we are restoring and creating a series of wildflower-rich habitat stepping stones. They link existing wildlife areas together, creating a network, like a railway, that will weave across the British landscape. And we need everyone on the B-Lines to help!
