October 22nd, 2018
Dear Hiring Manager, I am a fourth year student in the five year NAAB accredited Kansas State University Master of Architecture program seeking an internship with Anderson Anderson Architecture from January 5-July 31, 2019. I am enthusiastically applying for an architecture internship position with your firm. I am creative, self-driven, hardworking and willing to go above and beyond. I believe that great creativity is the result of collective effort that is combined with passionate and innovative ideas. During the past four years, I have been an active student in the College of Architecture, Planning and Design. My studio work has been displayed in the college and retained for accreditation evaluation. Through my educational experiences, it has taught me to conduct thorough analysis and research on factors that make various built environments special in their appeal, functionality and construction. I am proficient in digital software and as well as a sketch artistry which allow me to effectively communicate my design intentions. I am a quick learner and will also take initiative. I am very detail-oriented and enthusiastic about contributing to your team. As a result of my past internship opportunity, I have significantly improved my ability to communicate, collaborate, and cooperate with the clients and colleagues. This is the kind of mission that I aspire to be a part of and that my talents can compliment. I would be eager to discuss with you further how I can be an asset to your firm. Thank you for your time and consideration. I look forward to the opportunity to speak with you.
Sincerely,
Jubilee Kao

parson animal care clinic PACC will provide a shelter for stray and lost animals, treat and rehabilitate them as needed, and shelter them until they can be re-homed. it will also provide basic necessities for the stray animals of Parsons, but also act as a community center for the citizens of Parson, Kansas. finding a common ground between human and animal physiological and psychological needs, green space is intertwined and weaves each building component together even though the spaces are divided, each program is controlled by an administrative element. the courtyard spaces become an integral element in the building’s layout.

hidden within the flint hills drawing inspiration from the site's natural ambiance, this library is designed to delve it's residents into the simplicity of the surrounding environment. found in rural kansas, this library will not only unify this town's community, but also provide a place for new adventures and discoveries. rooted in its history, council grove was the last trading post for the pioneers before heading the wild west. pioneers came to council grove for the opportunities to equip themselves for the adventures ahead. much like the pioneers, the community of council grove are on the quest for new knowledge and adventure. the library bears the image of the prairie land and forms the backdrop for the trailblazers that are exploring the new frontier of knowledge.

jc harmon high school in the spring semester of 2018, our studio had the opportunity to work with JC Harmon High School and explore the idea of renovation to improve their learning environments. the project integrated both third-year landscape architects with third-year architects, and was sponsored by a firm in Overland Park, Kansas called DLR Group. over the course of the semester, each group gathered information about JC Harmon and its urban community. our objective was not to just benefit the students attending the high school, but the people of Argentine, Kansas. with community development in mind, landscape architecture students worked on site development while the architecture students developed the school building. together we’ve attempted to achieve a wellintegrated school and site design. http://inspire.k-state.edu/your-support-in-action/impact-stories/LandscapeArchProject.html

01_concept
education is the process of experience and possibilities. it’s encouraging and giving to discover. it’s important to create a space that cultivates hope and desire, that’s deliberate and informed, and respectful to the process of education.
02_site analysis
with neighborhood revitalization in mind, dividing the spaces by learning environment vs. shared activities allows the community to access the schools amenities after hours while securing the classrooms. this provides a sheltered courtyard in-between the two.
03_experiential learning
experiential learning theory relies upon the act of doing, or the experience of doing something to effectively explain the process an individual goes through while mentally digesting new material. this theory emphasizes the central role that experiences play in the learning process

an intertwining connection frida and diego's relationship was always a question-together or not? through the turmoil of it all, they always remained together. by mimicking the representation of their relationship, the bridge begins to symbolize their in-between relationship. from the outside, their relationship seems twisted, restless, and empty. but as they walk across, this steel plate that joins them anchors the two. as frida or diego walk across this bridge, they can feel the tension of the closing pathway and the release of the compression-symbolizing their turmoil relationship.

01_details
the rhythmic form of the bridge are kept at their consistent distance through the help of tie rods. the rods do not buckle underneath the compressive force, instead support the entire mass of the bridge.
02_connections
the structure is purposely hidden within, appearing as if the mass of the bridge is silently hanging in suspension with no mechanical help. the interlocked wood are self-sufficient and supported by each other. the wood is seamlessly pieced together.
03_golden section Stepping into the shoes of the previous building's architect, Juan O'Gorman built these homes upon regulating proportions. From the staircase to the wall of a room, every distance of each component has a reason based off of the most organic ratio found in nature-the golden section. Whether subconsciously or purposely, O'Gorman created a regulating system for his entire design. In the same way, by following the division of the gold sections within the 4.5 meters of the two houses, it can began to define the in-between.
04_footprint
The footprint of the bridge was subdivided into golden sections, then highlighted where each touched. The diagonal connection became the footpath, as the width became the space of the bridge.

bridging the in-between growing up in a musical family, there was never a time when music was not played. from the cello to the piano, the violin and flute; we played it all. what drew our family and many other people to music is not just the beautifully calculated composed music or the end result of a harmonic song, but the in-between journey that music takes each occupant on. musicians, composers, and the audience experience their own musical interpretations that go beyond words. like musical interpretation, not every journey is a straight forward path from one destination to the other. sometimes despairingly and sometimes romantically, music takes us through highs and lows. by allowing the occupants to experience different emotions, and walk along different paths on this single bridge, it begins to mimic the experience of interpretation.

kansas state in orvieto as martin luther king jr. once said, “we are not makers of history. we are made by history.” studying abroad in Italy has allowed me to understand the foundation of what makes architecture. to understand the present, we must study its history. a semester long study through APDesign Italian Studies Program has allowed me to go beyond the book knowledge and afford me the opportunity to experience classical architecture and comprehend the scale, culture, and society in its context. Kansas State University in Italy has provided courses that explore Italy and its unique past, art, and culture. i have experienced Italy's history and culture most through the physical act of drawing, analyzing its art pieces and focusing on the detail works of Italy’s quintessential times. throughout my time here, i have been able to thoroughly investigate and delve my knowledge into a deeper level of understanding of architecture’s foundation.
