ach year the Beerwah Charity Sports brings together a unique blend of interesting entertainment and activities for the locals to enjoy and this year was no exception. Even for someone without children I did recognise Elsa and Olaf from the Disney movie Frozen wandering around the sportsground. And I have to say as the day heated up, I did think that the fella was doing a fabulous job in being Olaf. Many of the blokes I know might not have felt at their ‘manliest best’ in this costume – particularly with the girls from the Strongman competition asking if they could pose with him, he happily agreed. As with everyone that is involved with the event, there are so many people that volunteer their time to make the day really successful and I figured he was just another local with a big heart and wanted to help out. Or maybe he was a fella in a costume trying to impress a girl – that Elsa is pretty special. But whatever motivates us to come together and create or support an event that will raise $20 plus thousand for the Cancer Council, I say job well done! And personally, I am looking forward to finishing off my purchases from the bake stall for morning tea this week. Regards,

When looking for a new kitchen, Maleny local Gay Robinson was shown Kev’s regular ad in the Glasshouse Country & Maleny News by her brother. I gave Kev a call and he was here within days, on a Sunday as well! Throughout the whole process Kev and his team were on time, every time, and were always caring and considerate. Nothing was too much trouble for him or his team, and the support right through the process and afterwards was outstanding. I wish other companies would take a leaf out of his book on how to treat customers. They would increase their sales! I would highly recommend Kev’s Kitchens to anyone. Gay Robinson, Maleny

The promoter’s, Dave Rollins, self-imposed deadline of running the event in December 2017 meant that an immense amount of planning had to be done in a very short amount of time. The Sunshine Coast Events Board understood this, and so requested that Mr Rollins be able to provide a range of pertinent information so that the Board could assess the application within a critical timeframe that Mr Rollins would need to progress his event to completion. And it seems that the very first hurdle – a track survey by Motorcycling Australia – couldn’t be organised by the promoter within a reasonable timeframe, resulting in the event application being withdrawn by Mr Rollins. According to Sunshine Coast Council CEO Mike Whittaker events do need to meet certain criteria and supply information as requested by the Events Board. “In his correspondence, the proponent has acknowledged he was unable to provide the information required of him within the time requested,” Mr Whittaker said. “Council will continue to work with event organisers to bring exciting events to the region

for the enjoyment of our community, competitors and their supporters.” Mr Rollins, through his event Facebook page – Sunshine Coast International TT – has made a statement confirming the outcome. “Yes, we have withdrawn the proposal to run a TT in the Sunshine coast. We could not meet the deadline for critical information set down by the Sunshine Coast Events Board and rather than have the incomplete proposal voted down, and have that black mark carried forward to any future proposal somewhere else, we chose to take the TT off the Event Board's schedule,” he said. “This was no one's fault. It was just the process and our proposal didn't fit. The Sunshine Coast Council has been supportive and would have been a great partner for the event. “Maleny would have been a great event hub and the roads, of course, are a motorcyclist's dream (which was why we chose them). “The small, but concerted campaign against the event had nothing to do with our decision to drop SCITT given that all the surveys showed there was enormous overwhelming public support for it within Maleny and elsewhere. “But there are other possible venues in other states and we will continue our quest to bring the breathtaking excitement of road racing back to Australia.”

Peachester Chicken takes out award wonderful way of creating the cleanest chicken possible. By moving the pens daily there are no fixed floors, so no build ups of disease. “Our chickens are organically fed, watered with spring water that is chlorine free, eat tonnes of grass and enrich our pasture. It's a beautiful thing to observe," he said. When asked where her motivation came from to build a poultry farm, Karen said they wanted to leave their farm better than how they found it, while producing a high quality, ethical protein. Matt and Karen came to the chicken farming scene without any history or experience in the industry. Almost everything has been built by hand with mostly recycled materials. “With limited acres, a start-up mentality, budget to match, and a view to lifestyle, we chose to rear meat chickens,” said Matt. “We could start selling product in about eight weeks after we started, and the feedback and revenue was almost instantaneous without sacrificing our ethical standards,” he added. The pair have approached the business much like a technology start up – they’ve kept it very lean with start-up costs under $10,000. Their customer base has morphed over time from local customer sales to the best fine dining houses and restaurants in Queensland. With customers like Bacchus at Southbank (TripAdvisor Brisbane’s Number 1 restaurant), Urbane and Esquire (Brisbane’s only three hatted restaurants) and the Long Apron and Tamarind in the hinterland, it has been pretty obvious their contribution to the betterment of chicken has been significant.

Karen and Matt Schmidt are the farmers behind Peachester Chicken Farm are one of a number of local businesses that have been recognised for the quality of their produce in the recent Delicious Produce Award that includes Cedar Street Cheeserie - Buffalo Haloumi (Maleny), Cedar Street Cheeserie - A Love Supreme (Maleny), and Walker Farm Foods - Nomadic Pastured Chook Eggs (Cambroon).

The Delicious Awards aim is to unearth and recognise Australia’s best produce, including those who grow, catch, supply and cook with it. Matt and Karen are both scientists with corporate backgrounds, but they packed it all in just over a year ago and started a very small, very different, hand built, hand moved, hand processed chicken farm, with organically fed pastured chicken. Executive Head Chef at the Tamarind at Maleny, Daniel Jarrett, said Peachester Chickens are simply stunning. “It's a cliche to say it’s chicken that actually tastes like chicken, but it does and it only has to travel 20 minutes to my back door,” he said. “I can actually have a conversation with Matt about his chickens and what size I would like them etc. They’re an amazing product – you can taste the love and care that goes into the birds and for me that's the difference,” he said. For Matt and Karen, having two children under the age of two when they started, the litmus test of success for them was, would they feed the chicken to their children and is the farm better off for having had the chickens there? For anyone visiting, the answer is a clear and resounding yes to both.

Glass House Mountains SES puts out call for new recruits

EXCELLENCE IN DENTAL CARE FRIENDLY SUPPORTIVE STAFF

State Emergency Service (SES) units from across the Sunshine Coast are searching for volunteers with a passion for helping others in times of need. Glasshouse Mountains will hold an information night on Thursday, August 25 at their building on Beerwah Parade, with the aim of adding new members to their ranks. SES Sunshine Coast Local Controller Janet Scott said she encourages anyone with an interest in becoming a part of the SES to attend the information night. “We have a strong membership base on the Sunshine Coast, but we are always looking for new recruits who wish to challenge themselves and make a real difference to the lives of others,” she said. “Being a part of the SES is highly rewarding, from making lifelong friends to being there for vulnerable members of the community and learning new skills, including flood boat operation, heights training and correct use of chain saws.” Ms Scott said it was important the Glass House Mountains unit added new members before the start of storm season, which is traditionally one of the busiest periods for the SES. “When a storm hits, SES volunteers are often first on the scene to plug leaking roofs, remove debris blocking roads and support people during and after a weather event,” she said. “Adding new members will greatly enhance our storm response capability and build upon the

Dispose recyclable items at the tip Did you know you can discard your old mattress and fridge at no charge at Sunshine Coast Council’s resource recovery centres? Environment Portfolio Councillor Jenny McKay said as well as being able to dispose of up to three old mattresses and whitegoods including fridges, there was a whole raft of unwanted items residents could get rid of at no cost at waste facilities across the region. “Council has committed to reducing waste going into landfills by introducing a number of incentives,” Cr McKay said. “As well as mattresses and whitegoods, at no cost you can also dispose of unwanted gas bottles, e-waste, scrap metals, domestic quantities of oil and pesticides and many other recyclables.” Cr McKay said with landfills rapidly reaching capacity, council recognised more than ever the need to employ innovative solutions to ensure recyclable material was kept out of landfill. “It was the results of an audit in 2009 revealing a staggering 18,000 mattresses heading to landfill each year that sparked council to really investigate recycling opportunities,” she said.

“Given the size of your average mattress, we were wasting 9000 cubic metres of landfill to mattresses as they are very hard to compact, which was costing ratepayers close to half a million dollars each year. “In 2010 we implemented the mattress recycling program, and to further encourage the community to take advantage of the opportunity, in 2015 we removed all charges. “Another initiative which has yielded very positive results since its introduction in 2013 has been our electronic waste recycling program which enabled residents to discard their old televisions and computer equipment for free recycling. “Residents can also drop off at no cost a range of items which council can resell, such as clothing, cleaning rags, furniture, toys and building materials.” For further information about council’s resource recovery centres including a full list of accepted items, visit council’s website.

Maleny author working on fifth instalment of popular series By Sonia Clark Drawing on his extensive experiences living and working throughout South East Asia, Maleny author John Pullinger is currently working on the fifth book in his increasingly popular ‘Steve Conway’ action/adventure series. Born and educated in Brisbane, John spent nearly 30 years on and off abroad and moved to Maleny 14 years ago. Prior to writing novels, John worked as a freelance travel writer for a number of years writing articles on SE Asia for major Australian publications. Previously he worked as a hotelier in Manila before going on to establish a successful bar and restaurant called the ‘The Slouch Hat’ which ran for 14 years and no doubt provided the basis for many of the ideas that surfaced in his writing. John has published four books set in SE Asia that follow the adventures of the character ‘Steve Conway’, an Australian Vietnam Veteran who has an uncanny knack of finding himself in intriguing situations and often two-fisted trouble. The character that John has created has been likened to a James Bond - though being an Aussie he prefers a cold beer to a shaken martini. “The inspiration for my books came from a stint working in Manila in the '80's at the time of the People Power revolution, said John. “I had visited South East Asia before, but this time I was living and working there during the upheaval of the local government and overthrow of president Ferdinand Marcos...a very wild time indeed for a boy from the quiet suburbs of Brisbane,” said John.

Maleny Author John Pullinger with some of his work One day, John felt inspired to write about the experiences of that turbulent era and so sat down and wrote ‘The Last Jeep to Baclaran’ creating the character of Steve Conway. It became so popular he followed it up with a second set in Vietnam ‘The Last Cyclo to Thanh Da’ then, ‘The Last Tuk Tuk to Bang Na’ set in Thailand. ‘The Last Rickshaw’ was published at the end of last year and John is now in discussions about film options for his first novel. Available in paperback from any good bookstore including Rosetta Books in Maleny, for more details visit www.johnpullinger.com

Local footballers complete international competition By Lea Parkes Former Beerwah High Students Josh Wall and Blake Howden have just returned from Xiamen, China where they were part of the winning team in the Xiamen Invitational Youth Football Tournament. Blake, who now plays with Sunshine Coast Fire, started his football career in the Under 6s however Josh didn’t take up the sport until he was about nine. When you talk to them both it is easy to see the passion they both have for the sport and how pleased they were to be chosen to be part of this Sunshine Coast representative team with the players all aged between 16 and 18. The competition included teams from Thailand, Malaysia, Korea, the Czech Republic, and a number from Xiamen, one of which they beat in the grand final, two goals to one. Josh explained that they only had about three weeks’ notice, and during that time the final team only had two training sessions together. They weren’t confident that they could take out the competition.

AUGUST PROMOTION

$25

However, the team won each of their five games, and Josh reckons that the team bonded really well, quite quickly, and really benefited from having great coaching … in particular from Coaching Director, Scottie Grimshaw. While the lads were keen to talk about the games they played, they also had plenty to say about the cultural elements that surprised them – the accommodation, the food, the toilets, the language. However, things were made much easier because of the student translator they had with them the whole time. The playing facilities were good, however Josh, who plays goalie, said the astro turf surfaces took some adjustment, but he reckons the advantage of it was the consistency of it. Blake said they couldn’t believe the interest in them because they were Australian, and apparently when they went out there were plenty of requests from people who wanted to have selfies taken (I got the impression that was mostly from the local girls).

Blake and Josh with Josh's Silver Glove trophy Both sets of parents – Kelly and Clayton Wall and Kim and Andrew Howden, all from Beerwah – are clearly very proud of the boys and their achievements and were kept busy during the 10 day trip on Facebook following what was happening. Along with their medals for winning, Josh also took out the ‘Silver Glove Award’. Both Josh and Blake are keen to pursue a professional career playing football and eventually play overseas, so no doubt this was a great preparation for them. They both agreed that the favourite part of the trip would have to have been winning and also the celebrations afterward, which they described as quite memorable and included swapping their jerseys with the Korean team.

Off the wall art!

Now if, as an artist, you're anything like Michele, you'll have a storeroom full of unloved artwork. It’s all good work, it's just that when you had the exhibition no-one fell in love with those pieces and wanted to take them home......and, have you noticed? So many of the professional offices around here have such sad empty walls... "Call me a match-maker if you will!" says Michele "I saw two needs and I'm trying to join them up!" Michele has started an 'art for hire' business - primarily focused on professional suites, but also 'real estate makeovers' for display homes or houses for sale, or in fact, for anyone who would like to indulge themselves in the extraordinary creativity of our region. Artists and potential hirers throughout the Sunshine Coast are all welcome to participate. Michele has a growing 'library' of artwork on her iPad, and she is keen to add more artists. She will take her iPad to prospective clients and, free of charge, work with the client to decide on the 'best fit' artworks for the premises, considering the business type and clientele, and the mood that they want to create. Hirers can choose from monthly, quarterly, six monthly or annual plans; each of which has its own advantages. "Certainly no-one will get rich from this scheme; least of all me!" she said. "There is no cost to artists to participate, yet artists will receive a small fee for each work hired out; and the hire

fees are more than reasonable - just enough to cover my out-of-pocket costs - and cheap enough to make the idea interesting to hirers." The commitment for artists is minimal - there is no sign-up fee and there are no ongoing out-ofpocket costs, all that Michele needs is the details of available artworks and a few jpgs of each 'line' of work. For artists: this scheme will have your art work on display, instead of gathering dust; and of course the 'try before you buy' concept applies - where rental payments can contribute to purchasing the work, or hirers can elect to have works for sale while hanging in their premises. For hirers: it will mean that you can have professional standard artworks to complement your decor and engage your clients, at a fraction of the cost of purchasing the works - and you can change your 'look' as frequently as you wish. "This idea will result in a wide range of professional quality works on display throughout the Region, supporting our local artists and further promoting our image of being an 'arts hub' in South East Queensland!" If you as an artist, are interested in participating, get in touch with Michele and she'll send you the details; if you are interested in hiring art - let her know and she'll send you those details! Michele's email is reddoorart@bigpond.com or call her on 0412 936 361 for more details.

Late July saw our inaugural Finance and Sustainability Expo held at the Maleny Showgrounds, with a great range of stalls, presenters, forums and a good turnout of active participants. Feedback was very positive with many stall holders wanting to sign up for 2017 before we’d even decided to go again! Thank you to Nicole Hilton of Maleny Commerce and the Maleny Credit Union for her vision and co-ordination of this event. Thanks also to the major sponsors the Maleny Credit Union (for their above and beyond contribution to the event through their time and resources) and Sunshine Coast Council (in particular Cr Jenny McKay) without whose support this event would not have been possible. I see this event as a great way of differentiating how we do business in Maleny by promoting clean, green and socially responsible practices within our businesses and the wider community. The growth of business on the range is strongly linked to our healthy environment and unique character, which is reflected in the popularity of the great, high quality products coming out of our dairy industry, our growing arts and craft sector, our health and wellbeing practitioners, our many and varied accommodation and services providers, our extremely popular wedding industry and of course our healthy, high quality cafés and restaurants! But at the end of the day our major drawcard is our environment as it provides world class views, tranquillity and a healthy getaway for local and tourists alike. This is our most valued asset and the real driver of tourism on the range. Our next Networking Breakfast is on Tuesday, September 13, check for details on our website ww.malenycommerce.org.au and join us for a great opportunity to catch up and network with Maleny business and community representatives. Keep up the good business.

One happy winner As part of the recent Hinterland Finance and Sustainability Expo there was a lucky draw held on the day, with the winner receiving a $500.00 voucher to be spent with one of the business members of Maleny Commerce. Not surprisingly, Linda Scharf of Witta was really pleased to find out that she was the winner of the prize draw. While owning her property at Witta for the past six years, she only made the permanent move at the beginning of the year and is pleased to finally call Maleny home. With work that needs to be undertaken on her property, Linda has decided to spend her voucher with Brush Turkey Enterprises.

Local business woman awarded finalist for National AusMumpreneur Awards Angelica Dellaway, owner of ‘NEST 2 ME’, an online baby and parenting store based in Glasshouse Country, was recently a finalist for the 2016 St George Banking Group AusMumpreneur Awards. The AusMumpreneur Awards, presented by The AusMumpreneur Network, celebrate and recognise Australian mums in business achieving outstanding success in areas such as business excellence, product development, customer service and digital innovation. The awards are designed to recognise the growing number of women who successfully balance motherhood and business in a way that suits their life and family. Angelica describes herself as a business owner/ manager, teacher, fitness instructor and work at home mum. After a career in primary school teaching, Angelica was on maternity leave with her first child in 2008. She had originally planned to return to teaching after six to 12 months, however like many mothers, as time went on she decided she didn’t feel ready to go back to her teaching career just yet and instead trained as a fitness instructor around looking after her first born, followed by her next child. But what started out as somewhat of a hobby, quickly became a part-time health and fitness business. This taught her the fundamentals of

setting up a business and operating all areas of a business. After quite a few years in the fitness industry, working late night and weekend classes, with some recurring injuries, she decided to take a break and focus on the online retail sector of the business. With the introduction of new product lines, the creation of a new e-commerce website and re-branding, her natural health store quickly grew into an online store specialising in nurturing parenting products for bump, baby and beyond including baby carriers, organic health products for families, gift hampers, products for breastfeeding, pregnancy and more. “It is also important to schedule in plenty of personal time so you don’t burn out,” Angelica said. “If your mind and body are overwhelmed, you cannot work at your best and are prone to error and lower productivity. “Make time for Mind Body and Soul. I love to dance, go to the gym for a workout and spend quality time with my family.” You can read more about Angelica and the huge range of products and services her business ‘Nest 2 Me’ offers for parents and expectant parents at www.nest2me.com or follow on Facebook at www.facebook.com/nest2me

Local early childhood teachers unite The Glasshouse Country community is fortunate to have passionate and likeminded Early Childhood Educators who are all dedicated to creating a warm and positive environment for our local children. Last week, Beerwah Kindy extended an invitation to the local Prep and Early Childhood Teachers to join them to discuss how they can work together to ensure children enjoy a positive start to school. Co-director Rebecca Mackintosh said it was their first meeting and they had a great show of support. “There were representatives from Beerwah, Glass House Mountains, and Beerburrum State Schools as well as Glasshouse Christian College, Landsborough Kindy, and Beerwah Bella Grace,” she said. The Kindy plans to organise another get

Amenities just keep getting better Turning up to the Peachester playgroup with a pram and toddlers in tow just got easier! We now have ramp access. Krysty and Ryan from Charmak Landscape have donated their landscaping skills and many hours into planning and adding more paths, replacing and extending paved areas with concrete, adding a new gate and ramp access, more garden beds and joining the softfall playgrounds into one. Many thanks also to donations from the following generous suppliers: Hytec Concrete Beerwah, Caboolture Concretors Warehouse for all the mesh, Charmak Landscape Construction and As Green As for new turf. Playgroup is a great way for babies through to toddlers to ‘play’ with other kids and an excellent way for parents and grandparents to meet other parents in the community. After winning best Playgroup in Queensland last year we just got even better. Peachester Playgroup meets every Tuesday from 9.15am until 11.30am at the play area just behind the church and hall in Peachester. Bring a water bottle, hat and a piece of fruit for a shared morning tea fruit platter. Enquiries phone Krysty on 0400 175 134.

No 1 IGA in Queensland 2016!

Coffee, or tea? Local business owners Steve and Adrian of Maleny Coffee were recently in store introducing customers to the individual flavours of their range of organic specialty teas including English Breakfast, Sencha Green Tea, Lemongrass & Ginger, Chamomile Blue Moon and Black Chai. For the past eighteen months they have only been supplying this range to their wholesale cafe clients but, with the growing demand from dedicated tea drinkers, they are now selling them through IGA. Each of the teas provides both an individual flavour and visual treat with the colour and fragrance of each product varying dramatically. For the many locals who are now familiar with the company’s coffee, you will want to try the latest blend of their Seasons coffee which is now on shelf, and is sourced from a rainforest alliance single origin from a family-owned farm in Mexico.

Never too old for Ekka Fun

Contributed by Trina Haylock Glasshouse Views Aged Care celebrated Ekka in style with all the fun of the show coming to us. We had Belinda Short and her baby animals, including Bam Bam the pony, visit us on Monday. Our very own craft volunteers gave a demonstration on Tuesday and Wednesday was Classic Car day and the Sunshine Coast Car Club arrived to show off their beautiful cars and to take us for rides around the area.

Spin for fun and funds Thursday was Clown day and Miss Harriet from Balloon Awesomeness came to make some very impressive balloon characters. The clowns took over for the day with lots of madness and mayhem around all the communities. Friday was the grand finale and the Jam Drops put on an awesome concert. We would like to thank all of our wonderful volunteers and staff for their extra efforts throughout the week and the following companies for their community support. Oakland Farms for all the strawberries for the sundaes, Nan and Pops Fruit Shop, Fullerton Farms and Traditional Funerals for the raffle prizes and show bags they donated. The pavilion display winner this year was Stanley Community. Mellum Community won the Miniature Garden Competition. A big thank you to Fred and all his helpers for the incredible lollies in the Lolly Shop and well done to everyone for supporting us in making the Glasshouse Views Ekka Week one of the best yet.

Learning for Life Contributed by Pauline Clarke At our monthly lunch meeting on Wednesday, August 17 we were joined by Marion Allan, the View Club’s ‘Learning for Life’ area representative who spoke to us about the program. ‘Learning for Life’ is run by The Smith Family/View Clubs and is Australia’s largest education charity which financially assists disadvantaged families in affording the cost of their child’s education. These children are assisted in their education from primary through to tertiary schooling. This assistance not only covers help with school books, writing materials, clothing, lunch boxes, etc, but also mentoring programs which provide one-on-one assistance to children and breakfasts at school for those in need. The Smith Family’s ‘Learning for Life’ program recognises that disadvantaged children need extra support to stay at school and go on to further studies or a job. ‘Learning for Life’ helps create better futures for children in need and provides access to Smith Family educational programs to help children get the most out of their school years. Educational attainment is

an important predictor of a person’s future employment, income, health and welfare prospects. In 2015 more than four-in-five (84%) former ‘Learning for Life’ students who left the program in Years 10, 11 or 12, were engaged in employment, education or training, a year after leaving the program. The ‘Learning for Life’ program is getting more disadvantaged children into reading and writing, particularly via the mentoring program where, in some cases, the results have been outstanding. We were told of one mum who stated that her son could not read or write; he was subsequently enrolled in the mentoring program and now has secured an apprenticeship as a diesel mechanic. It is this sort of assistance that turns children’s lives around and gives them real hope for the future. If any ladies would like to join us, please contact Lynda on 5494 7875 or Maree on 5494 6956 for further information.

The Spin for Charity run recently by ‘All In One Fitness Centre’ at Beerwah was a huge success. Thanks to all the local residents and members who came down and raised over $180.00 on the day. This will be donated to Cancer Council Queensland via the Beerwah Charity and Sports Spring Carnival held on Saturday, August 20. All In One Fitness Centre Team looks forward to working with our local community to make next year’s event even bigger and better!

Margaret shares her melodies

One of the members of the Maleny Seniors travels further that the others each year to attend their meetings, that’s because she lives in country Victoria. This motivated member is Margaret Suckling aged 91 and she doesn’t actually travel that far for each meeting, however she attends the group's meetings that take place at the Maleny Community Hall during her three month visit. She makes the journey north to Maleny every June and heads home when things start to warm up again in early September. As a young girl Margaret learnt music and did her training to be a music teacher, but due to lack of interest by students she retrained as a school teacher. She also join the Army and spent six years in the forces before marrying and living on the land. In her 90's now, Margaret still loves to play the piano. Group co-ordinator Lynda Burgess said Margaret entertains the members every week and says how much she enjoys her ‘holiday’ in Maleny. Margaret at the piano entertaining the group

New service for our Veterans at Glasshouse Country RSL

Last week GC&M News caught up with the President of the Glasshouse Country RSL, Kevin Beasley and asked him what’s new at the sub-branch. Kevin is really pleased that they will be establishing a Welfare section that will offer their services to both former service men and women, as well as their husbands, wives and family members. “We have been fortunate to secure the services of Gervaise who was previously with Peachester/Beerwah and Penny, also from Peachester/Beerwah, who will assist Gervaise when required. They are both qualified and experienced which is great for those locals who they will be able to assist,” Kevin said. One really important thing Kevin would like readers to know is that you don’t have to be sub-branch members to be able to access the service. They will be holding a couple of ‘Meet and Greets’ so families and Vets will be able to come along for a cuppa and biscuit and give them the chance to informally meet Gervaise and Penny. “We also hope to arrange for them to come along and enjoy a meal with us on a couple of Friday nights. You will be able to ask questions and find out what we have available for you,” said Kevin. The first Meet and Greet will be Thursday, September 1 at the RSL Hall at 10.00am. Family, rellies, carers and interested persons all welcome to see if we can assist you, said Kevin. “We will explain the role of the Welfare section, what we can / will do. “We do not do all the good stuff Glasshouse Country Care will do – ours is Welfare related and RSL / DVA related only. “But come along and have a cuppa anyway if you want more information,” he said. The club is located in Reed Street at Glass House Mountains, and there is parking at the back of the building. If you need to know more you can call the club on 5438 7777.

Beerwah Lions have a busy August

Contributed by Bob Banner Beerwah Lions began a busy month with 260 kilos of empty aluminium cans collected for recycling. People with empty cans, or children wishing to make some extra pocket money, can bring empty cans in on the first Saturday of each month, between 8.30am and 11.00am next door to the Coochin Co-op in Beerwah. The Lions pay 50 cents a kilo for the cans, which then go off for recycling. On Wednesday, August 10, President Charles Farran was pleased to welcome District Governor Norm Jensen, accompanied by his Wife Wendy, on their official visit to the club. Lions are a family he said, a family who strives to improve their community, as well as supporting each other through difficult times. He also presented awards to Lottie and John Nesbitt in recognition of two outstanding years of community service. Lions have also been involved in food preparation at this year’s Beerwah Charity Sports Day. Four Lions were wished safe traveling, as they’ll be travelling to Quilpie to join the workforce of volunteers constructing the Wild Dog Fence.

Sacred Heart Spiritual Church

A new Spiritual Church has recently been established that meets in the CWA Hall, Simpson Street, Beerwah, every Sunday at 6.30pm. The aim of the church is to prove that life continues beyond the veil, which we call death. They are a non-denominational church and everyone is welcome to come along and supper is provided. The Founding members of the group are mediums who are capable of making contact with those who have passed over to the other side. Many people seek them out, for information to validate what happens after death, or if they are able to contact a departed loved one. Through their work they demonstrate that life continues beyond the veil, and death is not the end. To find out more you can contact Rev Pam Townsend on 0409 058 843. Wet blasting for all types of surface removal and restoration EnviroPrep is an innovative, clean and cost effective wet abrasive blasting technique that provides fantastic results with minimal environmental impact. Beerwah locals Michelle and Dan Hetaraka have recently launched their mobile blasting business ‘EnviroPrep Media Blasting’ covering North Brisbane to Gympie and are keen to let people know what services they can offer. Michelle and Dan bring a number of years of people and client related experience to their new business. Michelle has extensive administration and hospitality industry experience and Dan was previously a country town police officer as well as being experienced in various trade related work. “Dan just loves to be out and about and he’s a very practical person,” explains Michelle. “He really enjoys having a chat to people and finds the results that are achieved with EnviroPrep very rewarding both personally and for our customers.” Wet blasting produces a better quality, dust free

finish than traditional dry blasting. It is not as harsh as sand blasting and the application process can be adjusted to suit the surface to achieve optimum results – such as for effective car restoration or antique restoration. Wet blasting uses 100% recycled abrasive media (glass and garnet) that combines with compressed air and water. The benefits of using water is that a much smoother, more consistent finish is achieved – for metal based surfaces such as cars, this process lessens the chance of the metal warping as the media is cooled on impact with the surface as opposed to being hot on impact as with more traditional processes. They also use Holdtight 102 rust inhibitor on all metal work to prevent flash rusting, giving you time to prime metal surfaces. Wet blasting can be done on just about any surface and can deliver benefits from graffiti removal and anti-foul removal to stripping off paint from automotive vehicles, pools and brickwork.

“Please feel comfortable to contact us any time on 0477066138 or visit our website at www.enviroprep.com.au/local as an obligation free assessment is all part of our service,” says Michelle.

Beerwah Writers Group

Contributed by John Wright At our early August meeting, the group discovered that the release of our July issue of the magazine has been delayed due to printer problems. We now hope to have it on the newsstands in September. Presentations included ‘Pineapple History’ by Bob; ‘An Unusual Device’ by John B; ‘Devices’ by Ceridwyn, all about young people and money; ‘Trundle’ by John W, a poem about the NSW town; ‘A Humourous Story of Adam & Eve’ by Paul; ‘Own Devices’ by Susan, about keeping oneself entertained. Amanda read ‘Better Luck Next Time’ about the attitude of cats; Kate ‘When We’re Married’, a romance dealing with the outcomes of misunderstanding; Maureen ‘The Tea Set’, history of a cup and saucer; Neville ‘Who Am I?’ a thoughtful script of self-analysis; and Trevor; ‘Drama at the Pentecostal’, a tale of an unfortunate threesome. In response to some members needing an extension of their writing skills, it was agreed that a series of ‘refresher’ topics be included in meetings for the next few months. Topics will include – creative techniques, formatting, story plotting, dialogue, characterisation and endings. This program will commence at our next meeting. There are still a few places for new members. Annual membership is $5.00. For more information telephone Paul Stevens 5438 7910 or visit www.beerwahwriters.com Our next Meeting is at 10.00am this Friday, August 26, at Beerwah Library.

Peer to Peer Parenting Program

Contributed by Bec The Maleny Neighbourhood Centre has identified a need within the community for greater support for parents of teenagers. Adolescence can be a tricky time for teenagers and their parents because of all the developmental changes that occur, including the changing adolescent brain. By supporting parents we are also supporting teenagers to make informed decisions and emerge as healthy and happy adults. The centre has responded to this need by securing funding for facilitating free workshops for parents of teenagers on Wednesday mornings from 10.00am to 12.00noon. The workshop will have two components; one being a professional guest speaker with helpful and informative tips including topics such as conflict resolution with teenagers, encouraging self responsibility, and supporting adolescents with their anxiety. The other component of each workshop is the opportunity for participants to talk and learn from each supporting each other. The program is suitable for parents of children from 12 to 21 years. The workshops are run at the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre at 17 Bicentenary Lane, and for more information you can contact Bec on 0419 911 413. It is free to attend and there will be light refreshments provided.

School News Prep Open Morning

Books and Blankets Night proves popular To celebrate The Reading Hour, Glasshouse Christian College held its annual Books and Blanket Night in the library. The Reading Hour encourages people to “share a book for 10 minutes a day, an hour a week, and give the gift of reading”. At GCC the reading hour was stretched to 1.5 hours on Tuesday night as children, parents and grandparents filled the library and enjoyed reading in every corner. Students came dressed in their pyjamas and brought their favourite book, blanket and teddy to enjoy some quiet reading time with a loved one. Milo and marshmallows were served on arrival.

This year parents donated a gold coin on entry and raised $92.00 for the MS Readathon. The Books and Blankets Night has become an annual event at GCC and is a bit like the calm before the storm as all the excitement of Book Week approaches.

You Said It 2016 Charity Sports thanks

What a fantastic family day out the 45th Beerwah Charity Sports turned out to be! Lots for every member of the family to do and see, in a relaxed atmosphere. All this is made possible by the generous support from, firstly, the business community with their sponsorship, and secondly, all the people who donate their time and expertise to help as volunteers on the day. On behalf of the Charity Sports Committee, I would like to say a huge thankyou to all competitors and to the community for coming along and making this year’s Charity Sports such a huge success. We are hopeful of beating the 2015 fundraising result of $27,600 and look forward to setting a new record. Results from raffles, competitions leading up to the Charity Sports, and events on the program will be published over the coming weeks. Bruce Page Chairman, Charity Sports Committee

Shame on you Maleny Police

I really question the modus operandi of the Maleny Police on Election Day, Saturday, July 2. The Maleny Police were out near the voting booth at the Maleny High School handing out parking tickets to all the cars parked on Bunya Street. The infringement in question was, ‘parked in a manner that obstructs other vehicles or pedestrians’. The cars parked on Bunya Street were not obstructing traffic and pedestrians had room on the other side of the road. The road was not a major throughway and it only affected the voters who were returning to their car after their vote. To penalise citizens who were only doing their civic duty is not only underhanded but also downright unethical. Shame on the Maleny Police. Roy Clogstoun Maleny

Vale my mate Mal Thomson

Another ordinary Saturday morning selling my seafood at Jim and Andy’s Tyre Power Maleny, when I noticed striding down past the Swiss bread shop a bushman, square of shoulder, granite like features, dressed in the clobber of a bloke of the land. A scowl upon the weathered brow, he growls “Sea mullet fillets, $5.00 a kilo, are you fair dinkum?” “Straight from Straddie,” I replied. “Bloody better be, or else,” he replies. “Or else what,” I try a bluff comeback. “Or else I`ll get the Missus down here, from the IGA and she`ll give you a swipe up the sideburns if you get too big for your boots,” he laughs. I offer my fishy fingers, “Patto the Fisho” and they are gripped in an ironbark like vice “Thommo, and I just bought a buffalo,” he says. That was my first meeting with Mal Thomson, truly one of Nature’s gentlemen and one who one and all would be proud to call friend. Mal had me up to his place to show the beautiful docile buffalo, and his grandkids ate homemade damper washed down with goats’ milk as we yarned away the hours, as people who speak the same language are inclined to do. Mal regularly picked up his fresh mullet fillets, regaled me with hilarious yarns, and spoke

words – SHAME, SHAME, SHAME! Politicians who did not support the legislation are unworthy of holding office. G. Bradford Maleny

Farewell for now old mate, we will meet again in the not too distant future to share a yarn over a pannikin of billy tea. Rest up for now cobber, you have earned it. You don’t buy a house just because it looks good so why would you accept a home loan on the same terms We think chasing the lowest interest rate makes sense financially but does it really? It may be a cheap interest rate for a reason. There could be “other” fees waiting to be applied throughout the loan or on termination. When you buy a home it’s subject to scrutiny … you may not realise but your Solicitor does a lot of investigating on your behalf. As part of the process you get a pest and building inspection and thoroughly read through this report so you know what you are buying and that there are no surprises waiting to take your money.

Your home loan product should be no different. Treat it like you would your pest and building report, dig deep and see that the product suits your current needs. On September 1, 2016 we will be dropping our Advantage Plus Home Loan rate. We call this Advantage Plus for a reason. Maleny Credit Union has been practicing Sustainable Banking long before the word “sustainable” became trendy. We have always had a point of difference and as others catch up we make changes so that we still have that advantage. Currently we reward home loan customers with

A timely reminder to be bushfire prepared History has shown that the cost of bushfires can have a devastating impact on all aspects of a farm business including losses to homes, fencing, livestock, crops, machinery and the environment. A detailed bushfire action plan is important as it will provide you with the tools to make informed decisions in a crisis situation and reduce the risk of serious injury, property damage and help protect your farm business. It is a good idea to encourage all members of your family to participate in the development and implementation of the plan as it will help maintain awareness of the ongoing fire prevention activities that need to occur throughout the year, not just in the peak summer months.

Prepare now for bushfire season

Prepare your property before summer starts to help reduce your bushfire risk by doing the following: • Move woodpile and stacked timber • Create firebreaks. • Prepare an emergency fire kit, away from the house. including a plan. • Keep the grass short - on farms, keep grazing pasture pressure high • Decide whether to stay and defend your property in the on areas near the house. event of a fire or go early. • Prune the dead material from the shrubs in the building protection zone. • Ensure you have a ‘survival kit’ pre-prepared. • Clean out gutters, remove debris from roof. As well as preparing your property for fire season, it’s important to check that your insurance cover is adequate. Your local WFI Area Manager can help you to review your insurance to make sure you can get back on your feet in the event of a fire.

To review your insurance cover, contact your local WFI Area Manager, Rachel Wright on 0437 804 951 or visit wfi.com.au/RachelWright. To see if our products are right for you, always consider the PDS from the product issuer, WFI (ABN 24 000 036 279 AFSL 241461). Rachel Wright (AR 362588) is an Authorised Representative of WFI.

The business specialise in offering personalised service with Dean and Amanda proudly standing behind the product they sell. Their confidence that customers are getting the best quality turf available is assured - as they nurture and grow the product themselves. reasons why you’re guaranteed to get the best looking lawn in the street from Wild Horse Turf

1 2 3 4 5 6

You’ll get personal service. When you phone Wild Horse Turf, you’ll speak to the person who will cut your grass for you. We’ll listen to your needs and help you achieve the lawn of your dreams. You’ll get great back-up service and receive our quarterly Turf Tips newsletter, with advice for maintaining your lawn, long after you’ve laid it.

You’ll get the best quality grass. We’re sure that you’re getting the topmost quality grass, wild horse turf because we grow it ourselves. We use biological fertilising agents for healthier grass that will establish your new backyard faster.

You’ll get the freshest grass. We’ll cut your turf to order, so you get the freshest turf available. From the moment it’s harvested, turf starts to deteriorate and die. Limiting the time from the paddock to your yard is a great way to give your lawn the best start. When you buy from landscape yards and hardware stores, you risk buying sick turf that’s been sweating on the pallet for days.

You’ll get what you’re paying for. Our Sapphire soft-leaf buffalo and Empire Zoysia are grown in paddocks that have been certified by Ozbreed, the breeders of Sapphire and Empire. So when you buy turf from us you can be confident that you’re getting what you pay for.

You’ll get a flatter, better-looking lawn. Because our cutting process still uses people, we offer a hands-on approach to quality control. Because we keep a close eye on each and every slab, you’ll get a more consistent turf and a flatter, better-looking end result.

No trailer? No worries. Wild Horse Turf values our local customers so we offer a free courtesy trailer for locals to transport their new lawns home. Or ask about our affordable delivery and laying rates.

Orders over 100m will receive a 10kg bucket of our specialty turf fertiliser

&Backyard Spectacular open garden at Buderim

What could be better on the weekend of September 10, 11 and 12 than a leisurely stroll around one of the loveliest local gardens you’ll find on the Sunshine Coast? ‘Orchid Grove’, at 17 Barkston Court in Buderim, is the award winning labour of love owned by Chris and Angel O’Dempsey. They have developed a beautiful urban oasis of tranquillity, where every space is filled with delightful colour, unique creations, and amazing beauty. Orchids abound on trees, rocks, hanging, and nestled amid antique garden items. Ponds, a waterfall and creek blend well with a wonderful assortment of plants, as well as a fabulous walk-through bird aviary with native and

exotic finches and quail. The early spring has made many plants bud early, but this looks like causing quite a mass flowering just at the right time for the open garden. A real talking point is the display of historic machinery, as well as a photographic exhibition charting the history of the gardens. The lush, tropical paradise feel is highlighted by ferns, orchids, bromeliads and other foliage plants, creating interest at every turn. There will be a plant sale on the day, so you can take away something which catches your eye in the gardens. Light refreshments will be available from ‘Angels Café’. The cost of entry is only $7.00 (under-15 free), with all proceeds going to their charity of choice – Heart Reach Australia. The funds will be used to follow up the Medical Ambulance Boat project (Chris and Angel built and delivered the very first

Ambulance Boat to Vietnam's Mekong Delta last December, servicing many poor families in remote regions) as well as helping hundreds of very poor kids in Central Vietnam. ‘Orchid Grove’ will be open the weekend of Saturday and Sunday, September 10 and 11 and on Monday, September 12, from 9.30am to 4.30pm each day, with a special group deal available on the Monday (call 5476 9444 for bookings).

New look ... same great service

Daniel Joyce and his wife Sally are proud to introduce their new business look and name … Joyce Mowing and Gardening. Dan has been mowing lawns and providing genuine care and attention to detail to local lawns and gardens over the last few years. “Our new name means we can continue to offer you great service and now much more,” he said. Joyce ‘M&G’ are a family owned business and they take pride in looking after many local clients’ gardens. “We are proud of the positive feedback we get from all of our customers,” Dan said. He said that while it was primarily a mowing business, they certainly don’t just do mowing. “We offer many other gardening services including hedge trimming, garden clean-ups, weed removal, mulching, landscaping and gutter cleaning. “Our best tip for summer lawn growth is book-in early. Once the rain falls and weather heats up the grass grows quickly. “We are generally booked up a week in advance over summer and would hate to say no to last minute call ups.”

&Backyard Go wild in your garden this Spring

By Spencer Shaw, Forest Heart Nursery, Maleny If like me you’re a fan of sharing your garden with native fauna, then here’s a few tips on providing habitat for our native animals. In particular we’ll discuss birds, but these tips will increase habitat for a wide range of fauna. The bulk of plants used in mainstream native gardens are cultivar Grevilleas, Banksias and Bottle Brushes. These are all amazing flowering plants that add colour, variety and are great nectar sources, but if they are the dominant plants in your native garden and they are surrounded by large open areas of lawn then aggressive birds such as Rainbow Lorikeets and the Common (or Noisy) Miner will often dominate to the exclusion of more timid birds. My tip here is to add different levels to your planting such as groundcovers and grasses; a diversity of shrubs and trees; and bushier planting that give smaller or timid birds somewhere to hide. Edible seed bearing grasses such as Kangaroo Grass, Poa, Lomandra, Bamboo Grass and Graceful Grass can increase habitat for smaller birds, with the added bonus that these grasses provide valuable nesting material. It’s the picture of parental persistence watching tiny Red Brow Finches trying to keep their balance as they take flight with a length of grass 10 times their height to build their nests with. Don’t forget fruiting plants such as Flax Lilly, Midyim, Breynia, Muttonwood, Bleeding Heart, Blueberry Ash, and Native Elderberry provide sustenance for a great variety of birds including Lewins Honey Eaters, Emerald Doves, Bower Birds, King Parrots and Currawongs.

Traditional responses to insect attacks (why is it that we see insects as attacking plants and yet cows merely graze?) in your garden is to spray an array of chemicals (including some quite nasty ones!). However, the vast majority of our native birds either will eat insects if the opportunity arises or live wholly on insects. These insects, although appearing a nuisance to us, are crucial food for many of our feathered fauna. I remember many years ago a Tahitian Lime tree in our gardens being invaded by sap sucking citrus bugs, who concentrate the citrus oils which they then use to defend themselves by squirting it onto you! However, a few days after they arrived, Spangled Drongos (fantastic name) also arrived and ate these highly aromatic bugs with a certain relish. Finally, a question I’m often asked at the moment is “who’s digging all those holes in my lawn?” Bandicoots could well be the culprit, but on the plus side they are eating lawn grubs and aerating your soil … learning to share your garden with our native fauna has many rewards, so join us in Going Wild this Spring.

WE CLEAN WATER TANKS Healthy Water… Healthy Life! Pristine Water Systems offers a wide range of water purification products and replacement filters / cartridges for homes, boats, caravans and restaurants etc. Our body relies on clean, pure water for general good health and well-being. It’s as important as the quality of air that we breathe. The fact is however that the water we drink from our kitchen taps is not always 100% water at all – it can also contain a weak solution of the chemicals that are added to make it “safe” to drink. Chlorine and chloramine additions are necessary to control bacteria levels in drinking water. These chemicals should be likened to the lunch wrap that is used to protect our sandwiches. Whilst it is beneficial in keeping the sandwiches clean, it should definitely be removed before the sandwiches are eaten. The good news is that there is a solution. Good quality drinking water filters / purifiers effectively “unwrap” the water that we consume – for both drinking, food preparation and cooking. So whether you rely on town or tank water, Simon or Allen can assist you to make the best informed decision on what’s available to make your water the purest for you and your family. In the Garden with Brownie

Bigger is better

National Tree Day at Beerburrum

Looks like ‘big’ things catch people’s attention. Steve Quinlan from Mt Mellum emailed this photo of his lemon to me, showing that it is as big as a pineapple. With the Beerwah Charity Sports Day running the biggest and the weirdest shaped strawberry competitions … maybe it’s time for a regular spot on the gardening page showcasing the ‘Glasshouse Country & Maleny Biggest and Weirdest Fruit and Veg’. I’ve always thought there should be a ‘rudest vegetable’ category at the Maleny Show – some of my carrots would have done very well. But I feel that I’d be voted down at the Editorial Planning Meeting if I suggested that as a regular column. Emails of support can be sent to Lea Parkes at editorial@gcnews.com.au (but I fear the idea is doomed to be vetoed each time the same way as my ‘Glasshouse Page Three Girl’ concept). So if you have any weird and wonderful fruit and veg growing at your place, please send me a photo and a few lines to gbrown@gcnews.com.au

Contributed by Katrina De Clara Beerburrum State School recently celebrated National Tree Day. Students from Prep through to Year 6 had a fantastic day participating in a variety of different activities. The Preps were very creative and were able to take home a wooden bead necklace, but also went on a mini school tour when they were introduced to mapping.

Beerburrum State School’s veggie garden Our Year 1’s potted up small succulents and looked at different sorts of leaves and seeds found in the school gardens. As part of the Year 2’s geography studies, they learnt about different landscapes and then worked in small teams to create their own ‘mini town’ with natural, managed and built features. There were some wonderful discoveries made by the Year 3’s during the tree identification and mapping adventure. One tree, with the common name ‘White Apple’ is thought to have been planted in the early days of the school, so could be close to 100 years old; we are currently researching the history of this tree.

Celebrate Spring and Wattle Day at the GMAN Native Plant Sale Now is the perfect time to start planting to take advantage of the warm weather. Glasshouse Mountains Advancement Network will hold one of their regular local plant sales on September 3 in Uniting Park Glass House Mountains. Sale time is 8.00am to 11.00am. All tube stock still only $1.00 with a few half price specials at 50 cents! All purchases over $10.00 go in a draw to win a copy of the local plants book of the Glass House Mountains produced by National Parks and Wildlife. To keep our costs down, please return any of our used tubes and bring cartons or bags for purchases. Enquiries: Gwen 5493 0029.

Senior students working together planting native trees and mulching

It was great to see the senior students working together in the recently renovated ANZAC Memorial Garden and Indigenous area, adding more native trees and extra mulching. Thanks must go to Mrs Lorelle Fisher and all her helpers for organising such a great day!

Environment

From local outlook to global exposure

Finalists chosen for 2016 Sunshine Coast Environment Photography

From an impressive number of entries, last week council announced the 25 finalists vying for $8,500 in prizes in the 2016 Sunshine Coast Environment Photography Awards. Environment Portfolio Councillor Jenny McKay said she was delighted to reveal the finalist images which are predominantly from largely local artists. They were chosen from the 665 images entered to showcase both the region’s unique environment and our relationship with it. Quite a few of the finalists images have been taken throughout Glasshouse Country and the Blackall Range. The selection panel had the difficult task of assessing the high quantity and quality of images to narrow the field down to frontrunners in three Kondalilla Falls base after heavy prize categories: Human interaction rain by Brett Cronin with environment, $4,000 first prize (supported by Living Smart) – 11 finalists, Nature based, $4,000 first prize (supported by Environment Levy) – 12 finalists and Junior, $500 gift voucher (supported by Living Smart) – three finalists. Cr McKay said the community had a not-to-be-missed opportunity to view the finalist entries in a unique outdoor exhibition from next month and appreciate both the beauty and environmental values of the Sunshine Coast that the talented artists have captured. “The awards exhibition will be exhibited at the Maroochy Bushland Botanic Gardens from September 2 –11 before it begins touring to various other locations across the region,” she said. “For a perfect way to celebrate Father’s Day on September 4, come and see this unique outdoor exhibition and enjoy the Spring Vibes in the Garden event, that features free music, entertainment, demonstrations and more for all the family.

Friends of Mary Cairncross Association The good news and the bad news

with Sue Tanner First some good news. The Friends of Mary Cairncross Association are proud to be able to donate $30,000 to cover the cost of the audio visual component of the Dusk to Dawn installation in the new Discovery Centre. Using clever lighting and sound effects this installation will highlight the nocturnal creatures in the forest. Thank you to the friends who attended the extraordinary meeting last week to pass this motion. Also on the good news front – a new cohort of guides has begun training and the current guides have a busy August ahead with many schools visiting our beautiful rainforest. The bad news, which many of you will already know, is the recent death of Bob Taylor who was the guide’s co-ordinator for many years and also past president of the Friends. A large congregation packed the Anglican Church on Monday, August 1 to say farewell to ‘The Boss’. Our thoughts are with his wife, Myrna, and all the family. A quick word of warning! With the warm weather we have been having recently, snakes are on the move. A brown snake was caught in the rafters of a house in Witta a couple of days ago, so be alert. photo by Chris Hanna Our next meeting will be on Saturday, October 15 in the Verandah Room of the Community Centre. It will be the AGM and we are looking for a new secretary. If you are computer savvy and have a little time to spare, we need you. The Friends of Mary Cairncross Association aims to protect and enhance the natural environment of the Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve. Business feature Tony Kramer became a reseller of Transportable Shade Sheds earlier this year following on from his original purchase of five sheds as a customer in 2012. Obviously familiar and confident with the high quality, variety of uses and adaptability of the product – even back then Tony had expressed an interest in selling the products. As Transportable Shade Sheds have now recently expanded operations to offering small business owners the opportunity to become resellers, people like Tony have embraced the potential of new business growth. A Woodford local and qualified Arborist for the area, Tony has always had a strong focus on local business and building solid customer relationships. While he maintains the importance of business growth at a local level, becoming a reseller of Transportable Shade Sheds in collaboration with Saver6.com means he can now look to forward to additional exposure at a national and global level. Another advantage of increased exposure support means that potentially the avenues for business growth are never exhausted Having a local focus especially in a service related industry such as arboriculture is fundamental to the success of many small business operators, however sometimes the market can become saturated and for a business to continue to grow it may need to look to additional avenues of marketing and exposure. In our digitally inspired world, while traditional methods of business have a fundamental place, it is becoming increasingly important for business owners to also extend themselves online. While Tony has a great deal of experience in a service driven industry, by becoming a reseller he is essentially selling a product which, to be successful, utilises both traditional and more current methods of engagement to reach customers. This is where by becoming a Transportable Shade Shed reseller in collaboration with the Saver6.com online business mentoring and marketing platform can benefit small business owners like Tony. By becoming a reseller earlier this year, Tony continues to maintain a local focus for the products but with the additional advantage of effectively joining two globally reaching companies to assist enhance his local outlook. Saver6.com can offer local operators like Tony a professional internet driven marketing tool that can gain exposure for Tony’s Shade Tech Australia and deliver potential leads and customer enquiries directly to Tony. Tony can then draw on his own extensive customer service and sales experience and can then follow up in a more traditional personalised way. By becoming a reseller Tony hopes to offer customers in the Woodford area shade and covering options for cars and tractors and boats to equipment and livestock shade. Having purchased a number sheds for his own property – Tony is also able to offer potential customers the option to see the product in his own working display yard. If you know someone looking for a Transportable Shade Shed around the Woodford area please contact Tony via social media or on 0417 604 201. If you would like to find out more about opportunities in your area or are keen to be your own boss, or look at business options that may work well with your current industry then contact the team at Transportable Shade Sheds on 1300 667 433 or Saver6.com on 07 5405 3620.

Please call Tony Kramer, a Saver6.com member and a Transportable Shade Shed specialist. He is available to help you get your Transportable Shade Shed on your property.

Living - Arts Sunshine Coast Arts Advisory Board established The future of the arts and culture sector on the Sunshine Coast is in good hands with the announcement and first meeting of the newly formed Sunshine Coast Arts Advisory Board last week. Following a nationwide expression of interest process, six highly credentialed art industry experts commenced on the Arts Advisory Board along with Mayor Mark Jamieson and Arts Portfolio Councillor Rick Baberowski. Mayor Jamieson said the board would provide strategic advice and direction for council as it develops an ambitious future agenda for arts across the region. The hinterland is being represented by Maleny’s Jennifer Radbourne (former board member with QPAC, Queensland Ballet, Qld Arts Council and Australian Institute of Arts Management). The Sunshine Coast Arts Advisory Board will meet at least quarterly and, along with developing a 20 year vision for the industry, they will also be required to establish an Arts Foundation, which will be key to the ongoing success of the arts and creative industry on the Coast. The hinterland community may know Jennifer in her current role as president of the Maleny Arts Council.

Kathi Holt-Damant, Phil Smith, Tracey Vieira, Cr Rick Baberowski, Collette Brennan, Jennifer Radbourne and James Birrell Jennifer is also an emeritus professor with extensive experience in the performing arts and academia, and she has researched and published internationally in the areas of arts audiences, arts marketing, arts fundraising and business development in the arts. Jennifer developed Queensland’s first Graduate Diploma in Arts Administration at QUT in the 1990s and has presented papers at arts management and cultural policy conferences internationally. Her most recent book, published in 2015 by Melbourne University Press, was Philanthropy and

The August Open Studio Trail

On the last weekend of this month, on Saturday, August 27 and Sunday, August 28, three artists will throw open the doors of their studios to the public as part of the Arts Connect Inc. open studio trail program. This is a wonderful opportunity to engage with local Hinterland artists in their creative environments while enjoying a picturesque drive through the region. The August studio trail will run from Peachester to Maleny and down to Harpers Creek / Conondale area where you can meet printmaker Jacky Lowry, artist and sculptor Jane Nicol and textile artist Annie McIntosh. Things To Do Pattemore House open this Saturday

‘Hear and Say’ fund raising gig By Sonia Clark

Don English and his cousin Vicki Pattemore (pictured in front of a photo of their grandparents Ernest and Blanche (Cork) Pattemore), enjoy visiting ‘Fairview’ Pattemore House. They are the great grandchildren of John Robert and Emily Pattemore and Arthur and Mary Cork. Don's grandfather Ernest is one of the four Pattemore brothers who built the elegant farmhouse in 1907 for their parents, JR and Emily. Situated at 15, Porters Lane, North Maleny, Fairview was built from pit-sawn white beech and remains largely unchanged today. It is the only dwelling on the Queensland State Heritage Register in Maleny and well worth a visit if you are interested in local history and how homes were built in the early 1900's. The Friends of Pattemore House invite you to explore some very interesting displays, including a portrait gallery of the families who built, lived and worked there. They serve a very good afternoon tea too! Open from 1.00pm until 4.00pm on the last Saturday of each month, they are open this Saturday, August 27. Admission is $5.00 (children free) and there's plenty of parking and disabled access.

Many families of deaf children throughout the Sunshine Coast have benefited from the terrific work of the ‘Hear and Say’ organisation. On Sunday, August 28 there will be a special two-hour concert ‘Get Loud to Support Deaf Kids’ at the Mooloolaba Surf Club to raise money for Hear and Say. Hosted by speaker, author and musician Barry Bull who owned the multi award winning Toombul Music in Brisbane, the event has been inspired by the amazing support given to Barry’s infant grandson Archer who was fitted with a life changing Cochlear implant. Born with seriously impaired hearing, Archer’s hearing, listening and speaking future really began the day he received the implant. His entire family are so grateful for the support Hear and Say provide – giving the gift of sound and speech to deaf children. The two-hour concert is a wonderful way to celebrate the work done by the organisation. The ‘Loud Shirt Day’ event will feature an afternoon of words and music and is set to be a highly entertaining gig. Tickets for the fundraiser are $20.00 and doors open at 1.30pm for the event that runs from 2.00pm until 4.00pm. Refreshments will be available and attendees are asked to wear a ‘loud shirt’. The afternoon gig promises to be amusingly engaging, with true life stories, live music and inspiration from the ‘music man’, Barry Bull. To book please phone 5444 1300 or book online via barrybull.com/concert. The Surf Club, Esplanade Mooloolaba.

Eye in the sky Maleny Film Society screens ‘Eye in the Sky’, a fast paced modern warfare film, this Saturday, August 27, in the Maleny Community Centre, Maple Street. The drama flits from Nairobi to London, Nevada, and Pearl Harbour where these geographically disparate players are linked by phones and videos in an ongoing drone operation. British Colonel, Katherine Powell (Helen Mirren) is on a mission to capture a radicalised UK citizen who has been tracked to a Somali terrorist cell In Nairobi. In the middle of the target zone is a young Kenyan girl, Alia (Aisha Takow), innocently selling bread in the market place. In the strategy room in the UK, Lieutenant General Frank Benson (Alan Rickman) is pushing for a strike but the drone operators in the US are hesitating. Do they take the life of one person to bring down a terrorist cell that could destroy a nation? This was the last performance by Alan Rickman before his untimely death. Directed by Gavin Hood and produced by Colin Firth; also starring Aaron Paul and Barkhad Abdi. Doors open at 6.00pm for dinner catered by Wild Rocket, with drinks bar and tea/coffee stand with home-made slices. Screening is at 7.15pm. From the churches Pastor Margaret Niethe - Glasshouse Country Uniting Church Do you find yourself weathering a life storm? Have you found yourself sailing along and the wind in your sails has gone and life is flat? Are you trying to navigate this ocean of highs and lows on your own? How are you doing? Finding your way! Lost your way! We all want to be strong and have courage in all situations in life, however there are times when courage leaves us; when we feel lost and all at sea; this is often when we don’t feel strong at all… so if you are weathering a path like this then, take heart you are not alone. There are many of us, friends, family, and neighbours who are facing the future with uncertainty. I want to tell you that we do not face the future alone; for the love of Jesus falls on those who believe and GLASSHOUSE COUNTRY

those who are yet to accept this love. And just as Moses instructed the people to hear God’s Word, we too need to take heed and read and apply this love to our own lives. In our region we have many people of faith albeit of different persuasions. I invite you to find a Pastor, a Chaplain, a friend and talk about life, for when we trust someone who will help us read His Word we are able to apply it into our lives. We are able to see things in a different light, because of those who walk with us and care about our future. In Deuteronomy 31:6-8 it says ‘Do not fear or be in dread of them, for it is the Lord your God who goes with you. While this can seem like the easy solution and we love them dearly, the outcomes and stories of others can be a deterrent, just something to think about. What happens if they encounter financial hardship and cannot pay the rent? What happens if there is major damage to the property? What happens when it is time to increase the rent to maximise your income on the investment? What happens if there are complaints? It can work for some investors if nothing goes wrong, but before you decide to offer your property to a friend or relative relative be prepared for the what if … something goes wrong.

Glasshouse Country Bowls Club

Contributed by David Hayes Tuesday, August 16: The ladies 2nd Division Pennant side played their final two games for the year. On Tuesday away to Solander Lakes they went down on both rinks. On Wednesday they fought hard to win one rink but lost on the other going down overall. It was a tough year but everyone put their best in. I’m sure they will come back stronger next year with some great wins. Wednesday, August 17: Social Bowls. Noelle Dean, Marilyn Boulton and Doug Sweedman def Russell Walmsley, Graham Condie and Dennis Hume 28-15. Dave Clarke and Mike Kernick had a draw with Maz Idle and John McSwain 17 all. Thursday, August 18: winners of the day were Bob Bloomer and Rob Scullion with 2 wins + 34. R/up with a 22 score in the second game were John Seghers, Bernie Mahlo and Jim Tatum. Lucky draw went to Di Hume and Rae Farrell. Saturday, August 20: Our Fifth Division Pennant team played away to Beachmere. One rink had a tough game and went down by 12. Our other team had a great win and got up by 19. Overall Glasshouse got up by 7 shots. Next week’s game is home to Narangba. As of October 1 next year’s bowls memberships will be open to pay. This year the new fee will be $85.00. You have until the end of December to pay. Our Mixed Fours Spring Carnival will he held Saturday, October 15 and Sunday, October 16. Nomination forms are available at our bowls office. $55.00 per person includes green fees and lunch for both days. Should be a great weekend! 10 teams are already down. We need more bowling members to put teams together. At least another four teams are needed. For those bowlers that have the internet or use smart phones, you may want to take note of the following. Our club is now on the site travellingbowler.com. It tells you where our club is situated and what days we play bowls at our club, cost, dress etc. It is great for visitors. If you download this app you will be able to use it yourself if you are travelling and wanting to find out if there is a bowling green in the area. Great concept, this site will only get bigger as more clubs join. Very simple, go to travellingbowler.com and follow instructions on how to download this app onto your phone. CDBA District Side Expression of Interest sheet is up at office for 2017. You need to put your name down by September 25 so we can send the form back to the district by September 30. Last year three of our members took part, it was held at the Gold Coast. During the week some of our bowls members were at the club concreting in all our scoreboards around the green. They did a fantastic job and on behalf of the whole club a big thank you. Bowls coaching is on from Sunday 10.30am to 12.00noon every week. Bowlers of all ages and abilities are welcome. Come along for a roll, it is great fun. The numbers attending are going up each week which is great!

Maleny Croquet

Contributed by Gail Denver On Saturday morning our normal coaching session was held, with our new attendees really enjoying themselves. Over the weekend a successful working bee was held. Sunday's club members play gave us the following results: Val Carbery and Helen Andrews 10 v Kath Smith and Sally Adams 6, Sarah Widin 13 played Robert Elliot and Frances Harper 6. Congratulations to Sarah on a competent break of 5. On Monday and Tuesday we play our second division club championship, followed by the open a week later. Divisions 3 and 4 will take to the lawns in early September. Regular association croquet coaching is held at our grounds on the Maleny Showgrounds on Saturday mornings; and the Range Croquet Club welcomes new players at any time, with coaching and mallets available for beginners. Contact Vince Carbery (5494 2193) or Priscilla Vickers (5494 3555).

Maleny's judo students shine

Contributed by Gail Denver Queensland Judo Team members Sam King and Harry Cauley were both successful in the Southern Cross International Open Judo Championships held in Melbourne recently. Sam won the gold medal in the under 73kg Senior Mens, with Harry winning silver in both the u60kg Junior and Senior Mens. Sam and Harry have been training in judo together for 12 years, since they were seven years old, beginning their training at the Maleny Judo Club. Both still maintain a heavy training schedule with the Brisbane Judo Institute, training out of Game Bread in Brisbane. They still find time to help out occasionally with training and mentoring of Maleny Judo Club's juniors. Both have represented Australia at a Cadet Mens (u17s) and Junior Mens (u20s). Sam recently returned from the European Junior Cup competitions in Poland and Hungary, where he was narrowly defeated in the bronze medal fight. Maleny Judo Club Coach Glen Cauley said he is very proud of these two dedicated young men and their achievements. They were also Maleny Judo Club's first Sho Dan black belts, also receiving their black belt gradings together. Well done Sam and Harry!

Sport Time for Little As sign-on

With the excitement of the Olympic Games still fresh, nearly 130 junior athletes took to the field at Skippy Park last Friday night for the Glasshouse District Little Athletics' Welcome Back and Trial night. While winning an Olympic medal one day may have Amali Grieve been in some minds, all of the kids and parents who attended ended up having a fun night of athletics with friends, new and old. Club President, Cathie Trevan said it was a fantastic turnout. "This is the most I think I've ever seen at a trial night," she said. If you didn't make it on Friday night and still want to see what Little A's is all about, it's not too late. The first run night of the season starts at 5.00pm on Friday, September 9 and you are welcome to come down and try it out for two weeks before making up your mind. The only cost is a $5.00 fee per athlete for insurance. Registrations for returning or new athletes are open now and can be done online at www.glasshouselittleathletics.com.au or come down to the sign on nights, Friday, August 26 and Friday, September 2 at Skippy Park from 4.30pm to 6.00pm.

Maleny Rangers

Contributed by Jody Hegarty The Maleny Rangers Under 14 Girls team is a force to be reckoned with! Yes these girls are making their mark in the league and hardworking coach Brianna could not be prouder of the efforts they are making. “The Maleny Rangers Under 14 girls’ team has been having an excellent season! Starting off as the underdogs and with a decent amount of the team being only 12 years and playing up, we've got the youngest and smallest team in this division. Don't let that fool you though these Maleny girls are a force to be reckoned with and they always fight to the very end to get that win. I like to refer to these girls as the comeback queens. So many times they've been a couple of goals down at the end of the first half and they always go back on to the field with the determination to win and they pull it off. Throughout the season, they have learnt a lot and improved immensely in their skills and for everyone who has been following this team you know it's amazing to watch! The girls have worked very hard this season and it's paid off. With one game left to go before finals they've secured a 6 point lead above Buderim, their biggest competition, which is enough for them to definitely claim the minor premiership! There's still a few more battles to win though, to get to the grand final this year, but with the way these girls play and the way they refuse to give up, I'm sure they will make it. "It's been an absolute pleasure to coach the girls this season and I couldn't be more proud of the team and how far they've come," said Brianna.

Amazing sponsors with delicious attributes

Monicas Café are the major sponsors of our Under 14 girls’ team and we are very lucky to have them on board! Monicas Café have a great sense of community and not only sponsor our Under 14 girls team but also came to the club's rescue when our coffee machine died earlier this season by donating a top shelf coffee machine for our use! Not only do Monicas Café lend their support through sponsorship of this team but daughter Brianna, who also works there, is the coach, now that’s community spirit!

Maleny Bowls Club

Contributed by Ian Hansen Tuesday’s winners were the Triples Team of John Kapetanic, Relma Godfrey and Ray Oldfield. The Jackpot wasn’t won when +28 was drawn from the Barrel. The visit from the New Zealand Touring Bowls Group was a very successful day thoroughly enjoyed by both the visitors and the locals. Bowls were played in a most competitive but friendly manner. Unfortunately, there wasn’t a lot of results recorded for the Twilight Challenge so I can only give the following results. The Touchers were won by Joe Walters, Bruce Rankine and Melita Gesch and the Money Board winner was Jackie Montgomery. Friday’s Scroungers winners were:- Les Bennett, Rob Norris and Relma Godfrey. None of the Sponsors’ Prize winners were present to claim their winnings. The lucky Money Board winner was that man, Joe Walters, who seems to be making a habit of winning this prize. This week is a busy one kicking off with the Monthly Jackpot Pairs Monday, Jackpot Pairs/Triples Tuesday, the Twilight Challenge Wednesday and Scroungers Friday. Finally, a reminder about the new competition starting Friday of next week, September 2. There is still room for more teams.

Just for Laughs Noisy neighbours

Donald MacDonald from the Isle of Skye was admitted to Oxford University, and was now living in his first year of residence there. His clan was very excited that one of their own had made it into the upper class of education, but were concerned how he'd do in "that strange land." After the first month, his mother came to visit, with reinforcements of whiskey and oatmeal. "And how do you find the English students, Donald?" she asked. "Oh, mother," he replied, shaking his head sadly, "they're such terrible, noisy people: The one on that side keeps banging his head against the wall, and won't stop; and the one on the other side screams and screams and screams away into the night." "But Donald! How do you manage with those dreadful noisy English neighbours?"

"Well, mother, I just ignore 'em. I just stay here quietly, playing my bagpipes..."

Checking for health

Wee Hamish attended a horse auction with his father. He watched as his father moved from horse to horse, running his hands up and down the horses' legs, rumps, and chests. After a few minutes, wee Hamish asked, "dad, why are you doing that?" His father replied, "because when I'm buying horses, I have to be certain they are healthy and in good shape before I buy." Looking worried, Hamish said, "dad, I think the Parcel Force guy wants to buy mum." Submitted by Shane, Glass House Mountains

Your Stars with Edgar J. Winter - www.astroclairvoyant.com Week beginning 24/08/2016

LEO July 23 – August 22 Next Tuesday and Wednesday, the Moon is in your sign and so those days are more congenial for you. Over the weekend you will probably be happy to just stay in the background. After Wednesday, with Mercury retrograde, your direction is poor for making financial moves. It is, however, suited for reviews over the next three weeks. VIRGO August 23 – September 22 This weekend may give you reason to rejoice! Relationship feelings expand and show gratitude where love overcomes difficulties. After the weekend, Mercury your ruling planet, retrogrades in your sign and for three weeks you may not accomplish very much. Concentrate on staying centered and healthy. Don’t push things recklessly. LIBRA September 23 – October 22 Double check plans and confirm all appointments for the weekend and the following week as Mercury begins its retrograde period at the end of the month. After that date plans can be altered. Venus in your sign, for the next three weeks, says is your time to shine and get noticed. Pay particular attention to personal presentation and grooming. SCORPIO October 22 – November 23 Be patient with money matters, especially those shared with others as this may be your time for strict budgetary controls. There may be secrets to talk about, or private information to share. Show a positive attitude and especially gratitude as that will bring you luck in love and friendship. Mercury retrogrades setting off serious introspections.

SAGITTARIUS November 23 – December 22 Be as clear as possible with other people to avoid complicated conversations and confusing emails. Write notes carefully and make order out of chaos. A series of bright ideas and plans can be made ready to change your whole outlook, but Mercury going retrograde for three weeks at month’s end, sees over 20 days to get things sorted. CAPRICORN December 23 – January 19 The joys of love are celebrated this weekend, so you should realise how lucky and blessed you are, if you have a relationship. So much so that you might make it legal! Unstable behaviour or unexpected changes may rattle your security at the end of this month as Mercury goes retrograde for three weeks. Double check reservations for dinner. AQUARIUS January 20 – February 19 There is nothing to prevent you from having good times now and with so many possibilities how can you choose just one!? The atmosphere is exciting and stimulating and generally everyone is in fun loving mood. A week where you may encounter lucky circumstances and over the next three weeks with Mercury retrograde try to smooth out rough spots. PISCES February 20 – March 20 Someone finally says what you want to hear because Venus enters the relationship sign of Libra. Make sure you say what is in your heart and mind. Mercury moves retrograde through the sign of Virgo over the next three weeks and brings various relationships or old contacts up for review. Don’t chase old friends at this time. Double check your diary.

ARIES March 21 – April 20 As you approach this weekend from Friday the Moon will move into Gemini and give you the pattern of better relationships with people in your immediate surroundings. It’s advisable to keep your restlessness in check and don’t go overboard in what you may say. Venus, opposing your sign, indicates others appreciate you more. TAURUS April 21 – May 22 Make all your purchases count and only buy things under creative inspiration as Mercury goes retrograde at the end of August. The next three weeks sees you spinning on the same spot until many old aspects of your life are sorted out and your career may go through an unsettling renovation. Venus into Libra brings you geniality now. GEMINI May 22 – June 21 This weekend the Moon is in your sign! You could feel like you are the centre of attention and caught in a swirl of activity! Perhaps there is a lot to say, learn and be curious about. Venus is in a good aspect to your sign for the next three weeks and that gives you pleasure and something to be happy about. Make plan B available. CANCER June 22 – July 22 The Moon comes into your emotional sign over Sunday and Monday. There may be a cause for a celebration and appreciation of a loving, helpful relationship. Enjoy all rewarding feelings in local indulgence but concentrate on gluten free and dairy free products. Mercury goes retrograde, so watch for errors in thinking. Don’t commit now.
