t isn’t often that we have ‘reality television celebrities’ hanging out locally, so I reckon that there will be plenty of excitement when Brad and Dale from The Block drop into Mitre 10 at Mooloolah next week.

I totally understand that if you haven’t enjoyed what the renovation television show has to offer, you will have no idea why this is so exciting.

While not an avid fan, I have been an intermittent viewer.

Mostly I just like to see the reveal shows – where there are the ‘ahhh this is just amazing’ coming from the judges or better still – the ‘what were they thinking’?

Wishing well symbol of hope

Landsborough locals Bridgette and Paula Powers, known as the Twinnies, have one really big wish and that is to have a permanent home to their Pelican and Seabird Rescue Centre.

While their passion runs deep and they have plenty of fans throughout the community, to make their wish a reality they know they need a lot of financial support to make it happen.

One Beerwah resident Yvonne Taylor, has been inspired by the dedication of the girls, and is keen to assist the fundraising effort, creating a quirky

addition to her front garden.

Yvonne and her husband Steve have built ‘Twin Wishing Wells’ in the garden at 13 Parkside Drive and Yvonne is encouraging locals to drop in their donations to help assist the Twinnies wish (their property can be accessed via the pathway from the Beerwah Marketplace).

Last Wednesday, Yvonne invited along local politicians to get them to show their support for the importance of the work the girls undertake.

Mayor Mark Jamieson, and Councillor Rick Baberowski officially launched the wishing wells.

The Twinnes wanted to thank Yvonne and Stephen for constructing and organising the wishing wells, the mayor and councillor for supporting the initiative, and key sponsors, Community Recycling Inc, Crazy Clarks, Coastal Signs & Printing, Eliminated Pest Management, Jeff and Ann Ross and Mal Brough for his $100.00 donation.

The Twinnies have a number of other fundraising opportunities in the coming months and GCNews will keep you updated on them, including a huge open day on May 18.

March in March Residents of the Sunshine Coast who have concerns about the need for stronger action on climate change can attend the Beerwah ‘March in March’ rally in Brisbane on Sunday, March 16.

"The rally commences at 11.30am, and is being held in Queens Park, George Street, behind the Treasury Casino," said Sunshine Coast Environment Council spokesperson Vivien Griffin.

"We know that many people are concerned about climate change, but are unsure how they can be involved. Attending this event will show policy makers that the community cares. This is especially so for the Sunshine Coast, which has been identified as particularly vulnerable to climate change, including impacts on coastal tourism, hinterland bushfires and increased flooding in many regions."

"My family is going to the March in March," said Ian Edwards. "My wife and I want our son to be able to enjoy what we have had. We need healthy oceans and to protect the Great Barrier Reef. I don’t want him burdened with the costs of dealing with beach erosion, drought, bush fires, and road and bridge repair from floods as a result of too little action now."

"I respect what science is telling us, and we want to see serious leadership from the Australian

Ms Griffin said that the Environment Council was encouraging people to travel to the rally by carpooling or travelling by train. "The train goes from Nambour at 8.43am and stops at all stations, arriving in Brisbane at 10.33am. We encourage everyone who is going to meet up at Anzac Square at 10.45am, so that a strong contingent from the coast can go to the rally together."

Good idea, but why here?

Last year, GCNews detailed how, at a Sunshine Coast Council general meeting on May 23 Council considered a report on noisy and hard to locate sports under a veil of secrecy as a ‘confidential agenda item’.

Nothing more was heard, so most people would assume that no news is good news.

However, it appears that the Queensland state government may have taken it out of the hands of Council, for according to the Sunshine Coast Environment Council (SCEC), they have secretly decided to push through a noisy motorsports precinct on a large tract of a local environmental reserve without consultation.

SCEC spokesperson Narelle McCarthy says they are concerned that a significant area of the Beerwah State Forest at Glenview may be given the go-ahead to be stripped of its protected status with no community consultation.

In response to questions put to Minister Dickson (Minister for National Parks, Recreation, Sport and Racing), it was confirmed that the government have been assessing a number of possible locations.

“The government investigated a number of locations, including Beerwah State Forest, to determine a suitable location for a motor sports facility which would help deter off-road motorbike users from illegal riding in national parks,” said the Minister.

“Preliminary investigations have been undertaken and market sounding will be conducted to determine interested parties.”

Dirtbikes will be catered for in the Glenview proposal And with the area being directly adjacent to that which is already earmarked for clearing to make way for the mega-intersection of Steve Irwin way and the Bruce Highway, the future for many rare and threatened native species appears dire.

According to Ms McCarthy, the idea for a motorsports park is a good one for the region, but just not in the proposed forest location.

“State government appears to be pushing through yet another proposal under a veil of secrecy which will impact on important areas of the Sunshine Coast’s conservation and open space network.

“We recognise motorsports are part of the many recreational opportunities offered by the region.

However, there are potentially other, more appropriate sites which could accommodate these activities without using public assets and valuable green space,” she said.

In response, Minister Dickson said that the public will be consulted on the decision.

“State Planning Regulatory Provision requirements entail that community consultation must be undertaken for such a facility to progress and market testing through an EOI process will provide another opportunity to gauge interest in the site,” said Minister Dickson.

SCEC maintains that the Beerwah State Forest contains endangered ecosystems found in few other places within the region representing an irreplaceable contribution to the biodiversity of the Sunshine Coast. It also contains significant koala habitat and supports federally listed species.

“The economic relevance of our protecting our natural assets for tourism, lifestyle and regional identity is also being undermined,” Ms McCarthy said.

“Minister Dickson needs to come clean with the Sunshine Coast community. He needs to understand that foisting proposals such as this and other commercial activities into high conservation areas and our precious few National Parks is not on. To do so without proper consultation, due process or the consideration of alternatives sites further shows he is not acting in the public interest.”

After almost two years since the collapse of the Mooloolah Valley Sports Club, the Glenview facility is about to be resurrected

by John Pearson, a Sunshine Coast businessman with prior links to the area.

In fact, John was a patron of the old club when he lived in Mooloolah for over eight years, and he has major plans to bring the club back to life as a family-friendly venue.

Once the contract settles on March 19, John says that he’s itching to get in and start the massive renovations that are needed.

“I’ll basically be starting from scratch!”

“There’ll be new ceilings, new floors, new bars, new furnishings … new everything,” he said.

“There’s a lot of work to be done, that’s for sure.

But it’s not like I haven’t done it all before.”

John has started, run and successfully operated accommodation and hospitality centres before – some much larger that what the club will become.

“I’m hoping that from opening day, locals will come in and see that it will look totally different from the old days.

“I’m looking to create a safe and secure family-friendly venue where people can come to have dinner and a quiet drink, with low-key entertainment,” he said.

The space will become a great function centre for weddings, parties and special occasions, and John says he’s looking forward to all the local sporting groups being able to have a space available again for their meetings, presentations and events.

“I’m really pleased to be able to offer the bowls club use of the facilities, and it would be great to see new faces joining the bowls club now that they have certainty of using the greens and the facilities.”

John is currently talking with the gaming authorities to have Keno and TAB facilities, but at this stage pokies aren’t part of the plan.

Targeting an opening day around the start of July, John is certain that he’s on the right track.

“I’m pretty confident that if you do things right and do right by the patrons that people will come back to the venue and once again it will become an integral part of the local community,” he said.

And with the jobs that will be created, there are only positives for the local area that will flow from this new phase in the life of the venue.

Judy came to ask Coral to show the craft ladies how to make shoulder sprays. Margaret Wallace and Coral Beutel went to Maroochydore on February 10 to demonstrate and had a fun filled day.

At the divisional meeting at Bli Bli, Peachester branch gave a $500.00 donation to be sent to the Rural Crisis Fund at head office. The state QCWA has donated almost $70,000.00 to this fund which is to help women and children in crisis especially those suffering from the drought.

This money is all raised by women in CWA who are volunteers. Our markets were a great success with the plant stall putting on a great display.

FIFO / DIDO support group The Mooloolah Community Centre, at 46 Bray Road Mooloolah, is currently offering a FIFO (Fly In Fly Out) DIDO (Drive In Drive Out) support group for local families and workers which runs on Tuesday mornings from 10.00am until 12.00noon. Hoping to provide a drop in service for community members who work away or for families with partners who work away, the Centre offers a place to drop in, have coffee and a chat and to meet others to share experiences.

Some areas that the group can offer support with are; coping without a partner at home, balancing the challenges of home, work and bringing up the kids, feeling isolated or lonely for those who work away or for those at home with partners away.

Builders: New homes, renovations, additions

This year will mark the 20th anniversary of the Glasshouse Country Debutante Ball, and preparations are underway to make it another outstanding evening.

The date has been set for Saturday, September, 6 and will be held at the Beerwah Community Hall.

There will be an information and registration night held on Wednesday, May 7 and then a second Registration night on Wednesday, May 21 for those interested in participating in this year’s event.

Both nights are at Mary McKillop Church annex on Peachester Road, Beerwah starting at 7.00pm.

Cost to participate in the Debutante Ball will be $100.00 for Debs and $200.00 for partners (due to suit hire).

The committee are offering a $10.00 discount if fees are paid in full before or at either of the two registration nights.

“Household solar will save MORE than it costs.”

(Source: REC Agents Association Report on Electricity Prices, February 2014)

According to this research, a 3kW solar system on a house will reduce the power bill in Queensland by an average of 52%.

The research says the solar industry has created 18,500 jobs and 4,500 solar businesses in Australia.

Another report by the Australian Energy Market Commission (AEMC) outlines power price increases and why they have happened since July 2011.

Facts: Wholesale and retail costs have added 52% to the bill total, 40% to maintain poles and wires, 5% for “other costs”, 3% for the RET (Renewable Energy Target) which is for the large and small scale STCs or RECs which every solar owner has received.

But here is the important part.

Most of the STCs and RECs have gone to LARGE SCALE solar arrays for the big companies i.e. 10, 20 or 100 acres of solar panels. Guess how much of the RECs or

STCs have gone to the HOUSEHOLD solar systems – yes 0.8%, NOT EVEN 1% of everyone’s electricity bill has gone towards paying the Government subsidy for each household solar system.

Now, the organisation that made this report is the “head honcho” in the electricity pricing section for national grid distribution. So they should not have a political agenda.

You have noticed by now that Labor, the Greens and the Coalition are diametrically opposed to renewable energy and green house gasses, so whatever each of them say, has a political bias.

And both sprout plenty of “bull dust”, including our current Queensland politicians.

So if the Coalition, strongly supported by our own State Government, finalise the RET and cease the STC or REC subsidy to households, then the 0.8% that every electricity consumer contributes towards

the Government subsidy may cease, and your power bill could drop accordingly (by 0.8%, big deal).

But then the State and Federal Government will need to raise more than 0.8% from households to pay for many of the 18,5000 jobs who decide to leave the industry and many of the 4,500 solar businesses which close down.

State and Federal Governments HAPPILY, JOYFULLY and WILLINGLY spend YOUR money subsidising industries, projects and activities that employ people that suit THEIR POLITICAL AGENDA, but when a GOOD IDEA comes from the OTHER POLITICAL PARTY, then it automatically is considered an unnecessary expense.

Power bills are higher as a result of these large scale projects. It is the large scale projects that add 2.2% to the cost of your power bill. The small domestic installation of solar adds only 0.8%.

So recently, when the school Tuckshop was in need of new screens, they immediately contacted Landsborough Screens for a quote. Not only was the quote very competitively priced, the staff from Landsborough Screens was extremely pleasant and reliable.

Tuckshop convenor, Vicky Van De Vorst, is delighted with her new tuckshop screens.

The innovative design of the screens means they can be operated with ease. They can be closed during food preparation to keep the flies and nasties away, but then are easily opened when it is time for counter service.

One of the screens was damaged during a recent act of vandalism and Landsborough Screens kindly replaced it at no charge.

Almost every day the GCCoC receives a request from a community member to address issues of concern. These requests have to be assessed within in the objectives of the chamber.

The chamber is not a progress association, that is not to say that the members are not progressive.

This is so far from the truth.

You will have seen in GCNews that Mal Brough is conducting an information session on communications. Last week I attended a working group to evaluate the capacity of fiber optic systems to support high speed broadband on the Sunshine Coast; it was mind blowing to see how much under utilised capacity is available now.

Broadband technology and innovation is now one of the key objectives of CCIQ Sunshine Coast Chamber Alliance. The access to this technology will provide a significant boost to business opportunities in Glasshouse Country. The pressure of numbers is the advantage of being aligned with a larger lobby group.

What can the GCCoC do about the operation of the Glass House Mountains Visitor Information Centre? The perception is that it’s not supporting the local community and tourism. The shortage of staff is restricting the opening hours which is unfortunate. The business community says the previous ‘Yellow Caravan’ did a better job than the modern facility that is now under utilised.

The VIC is operated by Sunshine Coast Destination Limited (SCDL) funded by a percentage of the tourism levy collected by council. The chamber has recently become a member of SCDL, this will now allow the business community to provide input on behalf of the chamber members. The chamber will be encouraging all businesses who rely on visitors to Glasshouse Country to become a member of SCDL so your voice can be heard.

Community safety - the GCCoC has been working with Mal Brough to secure funding from the Federal Government to support community safety. A letter to GCNews recently commented on the transparency of the tendering process.

If any community member is involved with the CCTV technology please contact the chamber, this is your community and your safety.

Following several break and enters recently, the chamber has been working with the local police to implement measures to protect local premises both commercial and domestic. The March general meeting will focus on this partnership.

This week will see the team of students from the USC commence working on the Beerwah Project.

They will be looking at all Glasshouse Country communities that rely on Beerwah as the major centre. The project will build on the Place + Project, CBD upgrade and the Beerwah Village Project, and what the community should focus on to create a future vibrancy for this revitalised modern rural town.

School News Students clean up

Contributed by Kylie Merola Landsborough State School students have demonstrated their support for caring for the environment through participating in the school's Clean Up Australia Day recently.

They embraced the challenge of keeping their school grounds and local community litter free.

Students took a break from class, then went to work picking up rubbish.

Those in Prep to Year 3 were given designated areas in and around their school to clean up.

The Year 4 to Year 7 students ventured out of the school grounds to clean up the streets and parks of Landsborough township.

Items found included fast food containers, plastic bags, straws, bottles, cans, bits of clothing, cigarette butts, food wrappers and bits of timber.

Principal Kristy Walton said the school worked hard to promote sustainability. Inspiring children to care for the environment was a vital part of Clean Up Australia Day.

A happy tail!

The children at Landsborough Child Care Centre recently had a visit from RSPCA volunteers Leah and Libby. They came into the centre with their toy dog Bob and taught the children how to care for their pets. They discussed the importance of loving and being gentle with all animals as well as feeding, washing and exercising them so that they live a long and Izzy, Lincoln, Chloe and Kade practicing their pet care knowledge happy life.

Contributed by Rae Josland The ‘Clean Up Australia Day’ organisation’s aim ‘to inspire and work with communities to clean up, fix up and conserve our environment’, is clearly being heard by the students of Beerwah High.

On Saturday, March 1, Beerwah High’s Student Council held its annual clean up day. At 8.00am on Saturday morning a collection of Beerwah High staff, students and extra helpers put on their gloves, grabbed their bags and prepared to walk

The children raised $120.00 for the RSPCA on the day.

Landsborough Child Care Centre also proudly sponsors a pen at the Sippy Creek Animal Refuge.

The day included some interesting finds such as a wallet that held a Beerwah High I.D. Card from a student in the graduating class of 2000.

The Sportsclub’s Management Committee had seen how driven she was and how passionate she was about the club so they strongly encouraged her to take on the position.

While the Sports Club is a not-for-profit community sporting complex, the commercial element of the club must be professionally run to ensure the high quality sporting facilities can be provided and maintained for the local community today and into the future.

Re: Simpson Street

Vehicles pulling out from parking spaces have been seen by me to need to cross the centre line to safely clear other parked cars. Road width one gets the feeling when driving down Simpson Street to be in a thin alley, the width of the road is distracting. You need extra care with people appearing at the front or back of their vehicles or doors suddenly opening in front of you with oncoming traffic travelling to close or crossing the centre line due to the road width. Closing of the left hand lane turning into Peachester Road causes a back up of traffic heading north on Simpson Street.

Traffic heading south to turn right at Peachester Road has caused risk taking by drivers to clear the lights and intersection.

I have seen changes to road ways in a small town and a larger town than Beerwah, in the smaller town half the shopping centre died in relation to the shops, it has been eight years but despite many tries the dead part of the street is still dead.

In the larger town, businesses closed who had been in business many decades. The road change was eventually reversed. Shops that had moved did not come back.

Even though the road is the centre of town, the area has a second rate feel, people prefer to shop elsewhere. The back streets of Sydney feel more up market than this large town area, and I feel safer in them than the main street of the above larger town.

I predict the southern area will wither and die over time (Simpson Street), a very expensive way to close a shopping precinct.

Colin Chalker Beerwah Last week coming along Simpson Street, I had to swerve out over the line to miss a lady with a walking stick trying to get out of her car at the doctors surgery (there is no close pedestrian crossing from the car park across the road).

Luckily there wasn't any traffic coming. I had only just gotten back over the line and another car opened their door and got out from their car right in front of me. Needless to say we both got an awful shock; and again I was able to miss her due to a lack of traffic through town.

Auldi car park has now become a major road through from Turner Street. Not only to avoid the road works, but so they do not have to stop for the lights. And now without an extra lane to turn left at the lights (even though we still have a green arrow), people do not like to wait for the other cars going straight ahead.

It is also awful when you get angry actions from the through traffic for taking your trolley back and they do not think you are moving fast enough.

I have first-hand experience of the works and people involved in them, and I would like to say that they have put in the utmost effort to ensure safety and accessibility.

Furthermore they have gone above and beyond the call of their jobs on more than one occasion and have always been lovely to deal with. A bit of appreciation wouldn't go astray.

The Glasshouse Country View Club has been established for over 10 years and for the past eight years the View Club of Glasshouse Country has met for our monthly luncheons at the Glasshouse Mountains Sports Club.

The venue has worked well for our group as the function room is really spacious with room available for a lectern and microphone available for our guest speakers or for entertainment at our special events.

The club serves us a delicious and well-priced meal – which the ladies enjoy, it is always nice to eat a meal you haven’t had to prepare yourself. We look forward to continuing this friendship with the club for some years to come and would encourage the rest of the community to take advantage of such a valuable community asset. View members come from all walks of life and meet regularly to provide our members with an outlet to help others, as well as to establish lasting friendships and contribute to the local community. In the article on February 26 about the Cooker and the Looker, Amanda said "we all get a bit lazy about shopping" as a reason we don't buy local food. I couldn't help thinking there is a ‘one-stop option’ already available here in the form of Sandy Creek Organic Farm. If you want to be lazy, eat local and seasonal, their weekly box of vegetables is an incredibly easy way to do it!

Since I can remember, for over 80 years it was drought one year, floods the next. It was the country’s fault since it did not affect the city people, bad luck.

Now it effects us it's a different matter. The labor party came up with a brilliant scheme – the Snowy Mountain, this was a stroke of genius. Of course we had a good Prime Minister, plus a party that looked after the people, not the me, me, me crowd.

They were people with common sense, not around today, it made work, money, jobs, and a national pride in our services.

We could do it and show the world, now it’s excuses, we have no money, not that we had much then. They will never come back again those pollies, but they must look at pollies now with disgust who only look after, themselves. How much do dams cost?

Couldn’t believe it

On my way home from dropping my wife at Caboolture Hospital last week I called into the Beerwah Marketplace to pick up some shopping.

I couldn’t believe when I returned to my car, someone had slashed three of my tyres. Thanks to the fellas from Beerwah Discount Tyres who came to my rescue to get me on the road again.

I reported the incident to the police who said that it was likely that I was targeted. I would hope if someone has an issue with me that they would raise it with me in person.

I would like to clear up any confusion about the control of Ewen Maddock Dam and other bulk water assets following A. Husband’s letter ‘Ewen Maddock Dam – facts or fiction?’ (GCNews March 5). The management of dams in SEQ is the responsibility of Seqwater, the Queensland Bulk Water Supply Authority, and not Unitywater. Unitywater is responsible for transporting drinking water to customers after it has been collected and treated

Prevention means taking actions to avoid something. Detection means there are signs that it is already present. See the difference?

Once something bad (cancer, heart disease, etc) shows up on a test...you already have it. Early detection of a disease is not the same as preventing a disease. We spend all this worry, money, and stress on early detection – so we can then take some sort of action. Doesn't it make more sense to take action before there are signs that you've developed a nasty disease?

My mum recently had herself checked out after losing her mother to cancer.

Thankfully, all tests came back clear. But I can tell you she is not a healthy woman, and I am always worried about her future health.

There is a big difference between being healthy and being ‘not sick’. If you put super healthy on one end of a spectrum, and very sick on the other end – there's a lot of area in between. Unfortunately, like my mum, most people wait until confirmation they are on the sick end before taking action.

We should be very grateful for the advances of modern medicine, but if you have your choice, I'm sure most of us would prefer not to need it.

While my mum doesn't have cancer or heart disease, her thyroid is playing up and she has had several benign lumps removed from her chest. But, in her words, “thank goodness” it's not bad enough to start eating right and exercising!

I hope the point I'm attempting to make is clear. Don't wait until your blood tests or scan detects you have a serious illness, because then you've waited too long. Start preventing chronic disease now with simple lifestyle changes. Eating cleaner, joining your partner or friend for a morning walk, and adopting an attitude of gratitude are great ways to prevent this chronic disease epidemic facing our modern world.

Sunshine Coast Council’s Division 1 Councillor Rick Baberowski said the Beerwah Technology Expo provides an opportunity for the community to interact with new and emerging technology.

“Exhibitors include Ted’s Cameras, Total Mircosystems, LisaSista Photography, Glasshouse Country Christian College, Beerwah Family History Group - just to name a few.

“You will leave feeling eSavvy after learning about social media, cloud storage, green screen technology, benefits of the Community Hub, free eResources including eBooks, eMusic, seeing an amazing 3D printer in action, and so much more.”

Glasshouse Country Christian College Educational Technology Support Teacher, Brad Evans said one of the hardest things to do as a school was to connect education with the real world.

“Having our Year 9 students involved in days like this allows them to gain perspective on what they are learning while participating in the wider Beerwah community,” he said.

“Some of the things the students will be demonstrating include stop motion photography to create an animation on an iPad, green screen technology for media production and news reporting and AppleTV technology which changes the classroom landscape – all these make learning both interesting and fun.”

The Beerwah Technology Expo is a proud community initiative of Sunshine Coast Council, Beerwah Grafx Group, Beerwah Friends of the Library and U3A Sunshine Coast.

Glenview Road

Council’s $1.1 million upgrade of Glenview Road between Rosemary Avenue and Tolson Road has come a long way in the past month and I’m really pleased with the progress. I stopped by and met with the on-site Traffic Controller who was genuinely impressed with the efficient work of Council’s road crew. An atmosphere of good will has set the scene for the project and locals have been supporting the crew with cold drinks and cake to show their gratitude. Through traffic, local residents and on-ground workers all aspire to see the project completed on time and achieving great results for individual driveways, overall improvements to sight lines and a smoother road surface for travelling on. If the good weather keeps up, completion of the project is expected to be in June.

Roberts Road

Extensive refurbishment is underway along Roberts Road at the car park outside Beerwah State High School. The work aims to separate through traffic along the road from destination traffic entering both the high school and Glasshouse Country Christian College. Car and bus drivers in the area will benefit from the improved management of drop off zones and availability of short term parking.

Skippy Park

Council is about to add the final play element to encourage active play at Skippy Park and thereafter we’ll start work to improve the entry along Old Landsborough Road. The entrance upgrade will start in mid-March and will take approximately five weeks to complete. The work will provide safety improvements for motorists with the inclusion of dedicated left and right turning lanes from Old Landsborough Road into Skippy Park.

It’s exciting to see the Beerwah streetscape take form, particularly the dramatic transformation of the relationship between the pedestrian zone and through traffic along Simpson Street – it’s going to be a great space given over to the streetscape and pedestrian experience. The improvements will support the future of the area as a great community hub for locals and an emerging destination for visitors.

Harvesting at Rivers Edge

Council recently undertook water plant harvesting works at Rivers Edge’s water body which involved the removal of lilies and floating plants to encourage the growth of underwater plants. These plants provide habitat, food sources for native animals and fish while also assisting managing nutrient loads from streets and stormwater coming into the system. Nutrients can create algal blooms or poor water quality over time. Last week, Ted Prickett from Peachester found this beautiful 2m-plus carpet python resting contentedly in the rafters of the fowl house. Ted said the presence of the snake, which was obviously well fed, may expain the disappearance of two hens recently and a shortage of eggs from time to time.

Snake handler, Peter Morningstar, wrestled the python from its perch and has relocated it to a more suitable environment.

Pythons and other snakes (many harmless) are a part of our wonderful natural environment, and if left well alone, will happily live side-by-side with us in harmony.

I love to talk and speak about hope. It is one of those virtues in life that helps us get through the valleys and up to the peaks on the other side.

It enables us to keep on going when everything else is saying quit, it helps us not to give up when everyone around us is saying ‘you’re not going to make it’.

Life throws some difficult and tough times at us and that is when we need the power of hope to help us through.

Hope is defined as ‘a favourable and confident expectation’. Hope gives us optimism and a positive attitude despite the problems. It says I will keep on dreaming, I will keep on loving, I will keep on working, I will keep on studying, I will keep on waiting, and I will keep on believing for a better tomorrow.

The bible says ‘hope does not disappoint’. It uses this phrase in the context of a hope that

comes from God and has the power of heaven behind it.

The Psalmist said ‘Why are you in despair, O my soul? And why have you become disturbed within me?’ Hope in God. There is a difference between our own will power, and Godly hope!

Hope is a gift of God to us!

The prophet Jeremiah declared God’s heart: 'For I know the plans that I have for you,' declares the LORD, 'plans for welfare and not for calamity to give you a future and a hope.’ Jer 29:11 God has a great future for you so look to Him for hope!

Nineteen members of the Glasshouse Hinterland Fishing Club fished the weekend of February 15 and 16 with some good catches Winners: Whiting - Max Schmock (397mm) Bream - Danny Kowald (278mm) Flathead - Sam Fulton (718mm). Children’s section – Sophie Johnston (Bream and Whiting) The fishing club fishes Bribie passage between the Bribie Island bridge and the Caloundra Bar. The club encourages responsible fishing and skills through competition. The year has just started, so it not too late to get involved with this family group of amateur fishermen, women and children.

Cost for the year is $65.00 for adults and $53.00 for children which includes membership to the QAFAC and nomination to the club events held throughout the year. Monthly membership draws, monthly prizes and yearly presentations are held.

The next competition is March 22 and 23. If you would like to join the club drop in and see the friendly staff at Club Glass House, 10 Coonowrin Road, Glass House Mountains and they will be able to answer your questions and give you a nomination form.

AFL Training in full swing

Contribute by Craig Bales Glasshouse Lions junior training is now in full swing as we close in on the start of another great season.

Under 8’s and Under 10’s commence training this Thursday at 4.30pm at the Tunnel Ridge Road facility in Landsborough. The first carnival is only a couple of weeks away.

Many of the kids have already been down having a kick while the Under 12’s and Under 16’s have been training and are eager to get started!

We are very excited about the opportunity to enter a girls Under 15’s team for the first time this year, the turnout at the ‘come and try’ days has been wonderful and the girls skills are coming along in leaps and bounds!

The club would like to welcome any boys and girls aged from six to 15 to come down and have a go at AFL on Thursday evenings.

Contributed by Jenny Kelly Huey is still behaving himself as we continue to have glorious golfing weather. We had 72 players come out to compete in the first of our mid week Monthly Medals. We are very pleased to welcome our Club Professional, John Mellish, back as sponsor for our Medal competition this year. This competition is held in 3 divisions with Barb Drury winning the Division 1 Medal with a score of 72 Nett. Barb was followed by Andrea Campbell who scored 75 Nett. Sonia Kenway won the Gross with a score of 90 off the stick. The winner of Division 2 was Di Smith on 74 Nett, with Viki Bartel runner up on 75 Nett. Winner of the Gross in Division 2 was Brenda Briese who had 98 off the stick.

Division 3 winner was Fay Raven on 72 Nett, with Oriel Lyon runner up on 78 Nett. Gross winner was Marie Norton with 111 off the stick. Nearest to the Pins went to Val Turner on 5, Lesley Eggleston on 16, and Margaret Goodger won div 2 pin with her second shot on the 18th. Mavis Brimelow took home the ball for the least number of putts on the day. Next week we will be playing a Single Par event. The Runners-up were Wendy Platt, Jim Tatum and Rod Platt with 2 + 35 and in third place were Millie Freshwater, Marleen Bertram and Trevor Bertram with 2 + 34, having the highest score of 28 off the card in either game.

In the 2014 Ladies’ A Grade Singles over the last two Wednesdays, in Round One, Chris Freshwater defeated Kate White. In Round Two, Marleen Bertram def Viv James, Millie Freshwater def Julie Palmer, Jenny Hobson def Margaret Beasley and Di Hunt def Chris Freshwater.

Thursday morning’s game was won by Clive Sinton and Graham Richardson and the runners-up were Julie and Steven Palmer. Max Viterale and Rodney Sharpe won the afternoon game and the runners-up were Leisa Craven and Jim Tatum.

Our Men’s and Ladies’ Super Challenge teams played Nambour on March 1 with both the Ladies’ and Men’s sides being defeated. In the final round against Bongaree ‘at home’ last Saturday, the Ladies won on both rinks and the Men’s Side won three rinks to two. Congratulations to our Ladies who are through to the Final Round Play Offs at Bramble Bay on Saturday, March 22.

Sara sure can throw

Glasshouse Country local Sara Wessling competed at the Queensland paraathletics championships in Brisbane last weekend.

The University of the Sunshine Coast Athletics Club representative won one silver and two bronze medals at the event.

Sara competed as a thrower in all four throws events, in javelin she won silver and she broke her own state record twice and equalled it a third time with a throw of 13.24m.

In discus she won a bronze medal with a throw of 19.46m, a national qualifier.

In shot she won a bronze with a throw of 5.14m. In hammer Sara competed as an able-bodied athlete as para hammer is not contested in Australia and she threw 16.48 m which is a ‘personal best’ for her.

This is the fifth year in a row Sara has qualified for nationals, to date she has self funded her dreams to compete at that level by working.

However this year she has been unable to find work.

She would be very grateful if there is someone out there that would be willing to fund her to chase her dream.

Nationals are held in Melbourne April 4 to 6 at the Lakeside Stadium, nominations close on March 17, Sara can be contacted on 0401 393 274.

Nothing to crow about Researchers for the Massachusetts Turnpike Authority found over 200 dead crows near greater Boston recently, and there was concern that they may have died from Avian Flu. A Bird Pathologist examined the remains of all the crows, and, to everyone's relief, confirmed the problem was definitely NOT Avian Flu. The cause of death appeared to be vehicular impacts.

However, during the detailed analysis it was noted that varying colors of paints appeared on the bird's beaks and claws. By analyzing these paint residues it was determined that 98%

of the crows had been killed by impact with trucks, while only 2% were killed by an impact with a car. MTA then hired an Ornithological Behaviorist to determine if there was a cause for the disproportionate percentages of truck kills versus car kills. The Ornithological Behaviorist very quickly concluded the cause: when crows eat road kill, they always have a look-out crow in a nearby tree to warn of impending danger. They discovered that while all the lookout crows could shout ‘Cah’, not a single one could shout ‘Truck.’
