TERM TYPOLOGY
2016-2017 THESIS I CAMPUS DESIGN
Barrier free environment and design provides opportunity to people with disabilities to use each space to its maximum potential. In 1985 Architect Roland M. Mace from Institute of Design, North Carolina, coined the term ‘Universal Design’. With rise in life expectancy, the facilities for the people with or without disability have minimal architectural and engineering barriers. Barrier free environment includes accessibility movement, adaptive and assistance technologies with aesthetic sense. Bhopal has the highest number of disabled people in Madhya Pradesh, India according to census 2011. From the total 15.5 lakh disables population in Madhya Pradesh; 84,502 live in Bhopal followed by Indore. Among the eight categories of disabilit CVVies listed in census, Bhopal district tops the list in five categories namely – sight, hearing, speech, mental retardation and other disability.

FACADE DESIGN The facade is designed in such a way that it acts as a shading device in a hot and dry climate. It is treated with parametric jali design put together along with steel frames. This reduce the impact of heat but still directs the light into the building. The parametric skin wall is tilted at an angle so that it efficiently diffuses the heat and thereby gives the entire structure a fluid feel.

The staff quarters, hostel block, cottages, director and guest houses have vertical garden on the walls which are exposed to maximum heat. These act as effective shading screens and thus provides a cooling effect into the given space. This shading feature is found along the sit-outs in director and guest houses.

Sensory gardens are places where the students are helped to integrate all their senses to make their life easier. The principle ideology of these gardens is to heighten their senses. In this particular design, various senses are addressed and are achieved by using different elements.

2016-2017 URBAN STUDY_PROPOSAL
As a part of our academic studio work, we had to do a detailed Urban study and analysis about Velachery, Chennai. This entire area was one among the many places which was affected by the floods in the year 2015. We had to find and enquire about Velachery from various people and understand the growth as well as the evolution of this place. There was a rise seen in the settlement pattern. The study of the land use pattern gave us a general idea of the area. The zone was classified according to the building typologies The activities of people differed. The settlement pattern was based on economical background. The settlement along the lake side had encroachments. Proposals were the answers to which how the entire place could be reclaimed and revamped for the betterment.

Recreation icon The hotel cum art museum is an academic project which was done during our sixth semester. The site is located at Muttukadu, which is 30km from Chennai. The overall site area is 39,000 sq.m. It comes under the CRZ 3. This location has a footfall of about 50 during the weekends and it may a rise during occasions. On the Eastern side of the site is the backwaters. The design idea was to create an iconic recreational structure which can be spotted vividly from the backwaters. The hotel and the museum is designed in such a way that they are connected by a bridge. Therefore it makes an ideal location to create and direct the tourists to have a wonderful time.

One of the most interesting part of the design is placement of an outdoor space where open workshops can be held in the museum. It brings in the concept of in and out spaces. The main highlight of this space is that it is facing the backwaters and hence it gives a good ambience for both the artist and the visitors.
Third Floor
Screenwall The double skin acts as the thermal buffer between the building and the perforation. The density of the perforated outer skin has been derived using computational shadow analysis based on orientation. The outer skin sits 4 feet away from the building and reduces the direct heat gain through fenestrations, yet allowing for diffused daylight. Thus the perforation serves the function of three main filters namely air, light and privacy.

Site Plan The aerial view shows the entire site, along with the structure and the Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) behind. The CRZ space is void of any built structures. Instead this area is filled with ample landscape so that the user gets the experience of moving through a green zone and also serves the purpose of protecting the structure from salt damage caused due to the wind from the backwaters. A dock is provided so that the existing boat houses could use this as their stop. This helps the tourists to have access and experience the beauty of backwaters.

BETEL LEAF CafĂŠ TERM TYPOLOGY
2017-2018 INTERIOR DESIGN
The interiors for the Betel Leaf Cafe is designed based on the fusion of traditional and contemporary style. Being the lead architect for this project; I had the opportunity to work on it from the concept stage up to the very end of handing it over to the client. The time period was six months. Quite a number of traditional elements were added. The flooring is done aathangudi tiles which were procured from South India. Restaurant Floor Plan

The Glass Partitions has frosted sticker of similar pattern t that on the wall.
The spaces which has wood partitions have a half inch thick CNC cut screen with pattern that complements the patterns used, they are sandwiched between two glasses to make it dust free.
Furnitures used in the cafe were completely designed from scratch, vendors were provided detailed drawings and the components were cut using cnc which made the production faster.
Kolam signifies auspiciousness. This traditional element is simplified to geometric patterns which therefore evolves into a new pattern. These patterns are spread over the blank wall. This wall creates a rhythmic flow thereby making the cafe more attractive.

The Red floateR is a funboard surfboard. These type of surfboards are specially designed for the beginners. As these have bigger surface area, the plank allows the rider to balance easily. It is (12’-6’’) in length. The final product is coated with resin.
Tail Fins added for stabili systems which are used in common is the traditional s above. The advantage with can move your fins to give boat.
The Red floateR’s form is designed using the rhino 3D software. With the help of the sections generated from the 3D model, the frames were cut using computer numerical control.

concrete fabrication. The digital model is unwrapped using grasshopper software which helped in creating a stencil for the mould into which the concrete is poured. Acrylic panels were used to make the transclusent part of the lamp shade, it was designed to be a contemporary artistic asset.

2016-2018 HERITAGE RESTORATION
Muziris heritage project (MHP) was done by a renowned conservation architect, Benny Kuriakose. He visualised restoration of the monuments, community spaces and heritage sites by linking them together. The main spaces and buildings that had to be restored were the Paravur Jewish synagogue, the Handloom Weavers Yarn Society, the Paliam ancient swap market, boat berth, etc.
The waterway acted as the main mode of transport for the visitors. Therefore the central idea was to create connectivity such that it will be the go-to-place to study Kerala’s history, society, environment and cultural heritage. Keeping this in mind proposals were provided by the team.
“50 BEAUTIFUL HOUSES IN INDIA” PUBLICATION widely used my sketches to depict the interior spaces of one of Architect Benny kuriakose personal favorite residential project.
