Bubby, what is there to say about you that hasn’t already been said — whether it be from friends, family, or acquaintances, your energy resonates throughout all of us. It is rare to become someone in life who positively affects everyone they encounter, and yet you make it seem effortless. Where someone can be dull or boring, you choose to be energetic and bright. In instances of trouble and difficulty, you push everyone to be better, and be more kind. There are several (hundred) things I have taken from you throughout my lifetime, none more important than being loving and caring. In fact, you have created entire generations of family who want to follow in your footsteps of being compassionate, caring, and unconditionally loving. You have done so much for this world in your life, and have inspired all of those around you to be like, and love like you do.

Bubby, How lucky we are to have you in our lives. Your boundless compassion, your endless heart, your quick wit, and your ready smile are the things that I will always cherish. Well, that and the fried rice. Holy cow that fried rice! You believed in me when very few did, and always cheered me on. You taught me to look past the curve balls that life sometimes throws, to lean in to the good times, and good company. You taught us to be tough, but not uncaring. Independent, but not impetuous. To be brave, but not brash. Your lessons helped make me the man that I am today. Thank you. Your warmth brings a smile to my face, even as I write this. You are loved, always. Congratulations, and happy birthday! May you enjoy many more, in good health and surrounded by those you love. I love you.

Bubby, Happy birthday!! I am so happy we have been able to create so many wonderful memories with you — each one has been more and more special. From our many trips to baking pies to playing cards in your front room, I truly cherish each moment that we have together. I feel so lucky to have you in my life and I couldn’t imagine loving anyone more than you. Bubby, Thank you for being you! You’re a constant reminder to always work hard, stay active and keep moving. Your mantra sets a wonderful example for the rest of the family! We all boast about you and Papa because we are so proud and fortunate to have healthy and happy grandparents who love us so much! Your mindset allows my girls to grow up with great-grandparents and I’m forever grateful. The time we spend together is always so joyous. Sofia and Olivia love to show you and Papa their new skills as they continue to grow, they love telling you stories of their accomplishments and they absolutely love to play music for you on your piano :) Thank you for all the love you shed on the family. Thank you for constant support and encouragement you provide. Most importantly thank you for being the best of its kind! We love you Bubby more than anything!

ODE TO A BUBBE — As far as memories go there are
so may wonderful ones that cross my mind —especially memories of Saturday nights watching musicals. Where did I first watch “Singing In The Rain”? With Bubbe. One that became my favorite musical has to be “West Side Story,” which brings to mind one of my favorite songs, “There’s A Place For Us.” If I know Bubbe, there’s no need to ask her to hum the tune if you do not know the song, it will just come right out. To this day I still have a love for musicals (Ian are you with me on this?) when I hear that song all I can think is “oh my Bubbe always hums that song,” something I can’t and will not forget.
There are so many more memories and I could go on and on, I can talk about your good spaghetti for days, and don’t get me started on kugel. All recipes I have tried to replicate and have failed to do, I think it all lies in the Bubbe touch. I definitely see you as an idol and I know we all have them (yes Robert Redford was hanging over your desk at work I remember it well). Every story told by Bubbe and Papa even if it’s for the 100th time is always just as good as the first. Bubster — strong, generous, funny and amazing does not begin to describe person you are — 90 years old and looking great! Happy Birthday!

Bubby, Finding the words that capture my love for and admiration of you is difficult. Perhaps that is because I know there is little I can write that others contributing to this book will not have already said; not because there is a paucity of praise for you, but because I know we all share for you the same deep and abiding affection and appreciation. You are at once the core of this family and the soft tie that binds it together. It is no exaggeration, and yet still not nearly enough, to say that we are all here, happy and healthy, because of you, because of your example, because of your strength, and because of your love. You are everything to all of us, especially me—your favorite, whatever Katie says—and we wish you the happiest of birthdays. Just wait until you see what we have planned for your 100th birthday. Happy Birthday Mom — I thought long and hard what to wish you and say to you on your 90th birthday. I thought about you as a woman growing up in the times that you did. You were always such a smart, strong, renaissance woman. You were way ahead of your time. I thought about you as my mom and all of things you have taught me. The fact that you have always been here for me. We may not always agree on things but always felt that we could “discuss”, although sometimes loudly, but after all was said and done we were always ready to make up. Through the years we have had a lot of laughs and some tears together that is for sure. I thought about you as a Bubby. How much the kids love and admire you. The times we spent together traveling, eating and playing as you watch them grow up. How the kids love hearing the stories you could tell them of what it was like when you were growing up. How you would defend them when I would get angry with them. How they couldn’t wait to see what you cooked for them or how you were going to spoil them. The
great-grandma that you are. How the kids light up your face just by mentioning them. But most of all I think about you the person. How you can be strict in your thinking but fair. Although I still don’t know if “because I said so” was a fair answer, but it always seemed to work for you. Sometimes you are a person with a tough exterior but always a person with such a kind and full heart. How family is the world to you and how you always tried to do what you thought was best for all of us. You always had a place at the table with a full meal or advice when needed and only when solicited. (well only when solicited if it wasn’t a family member.) Advice growing up came with the territory and I am so glad that it did. After thinking about you and all that you are, I hope I have told you enough and that you know how much I love you. So, I think the only thing for me to say on your birthday is…. Too much half hour Mom!!

Mom — In the fall of 1994, you decided that it was time to clean out your attic. The piles of accumulated, long-forgotten, kid-stuff memorabilia had to go! In the box of junk you ended up giving to me was an old letter that rekindled a highschool friendship. Look at us twenty-five years later, living happily ever after in this beautiful place. And we owe it all to your excellent housekeeping instincts! For this, and too many other intangible gifts to list here, we thank you. We love you. Happy 90th birthday.
