Biomimicry Case Study
BAMBOO Shoots BIOMIMICRY The bamboo is part of the grass family and is characterized by its jointed stems called culms. These can vary in shape, size and color. Each culm segment, or the internode, is joined together by nodes.
FUNCTION Its strength and flexibilty make is possible to be used for building or to produce almost any product. With its incredible growth cycle, it can quickly be used as a renewable resource. Bamboo can also be eaten and are used in several different dishes, especially Asian dishes.
DESIGN The outer layer of the bamboo becomes the strongest over the period of 2 to 3 years. Most of the time, the insides are hallow, creating several empty segments that could possibly be used for storage. The design of the bamboo can be used to create a packaging for something delicate and needs different compartments. The long and narrow design can also be used for ease of storage and transportation.
SUSTA INABLILTY With its rapid growth, the bamboo can be easily obtained and used as a sustainable material. The outer shell can be used as organic material to produce anything that requires protection. Bamboo has been used to create several things in our life such as furnature, textiles, and product containers.

Biomimicry Case Study
Pineapple Leaves BIOMIMICRY The pineapple is a terrestrial herb that have dagger-light leaves growing from its stump. The stomatas within the leaves are used to increase the water intake as well as allowing the exchange of gas and water throughout the pores. There are also trichomes, which are tiny hair-like structures, that help prevent water loss.
FUNCTION The leaves of the pineapple play an important role in its development. The leaves are arranged in a spiralling direction to increase the intake of water and sunlight. The leaves of the flowers also translucent water storage tissue that are used to store water for later use. With the stomatas and trichomes, the leaves are able to store enough water for the entire fruit.
DESIGN The spiralling design of the leaves make it possible so that the plant is capable to take in as much water and sunlight. Along with the stomatas and trichomes, the leaves are capable of storing water and preventing water loss. This can be incorporated into a packaging design that holds a product that requires to stay moist throughout its shelf life. The stomatas and trichomes can be some sort of inner lining and cover that protects the product from drying out.
SUSTA INABLILTY If the concepts of the leaves are applied into developing a packaging for the product, the packaging itself will not require excess materials to keep the product moist within its container.

Biomimicry Case Study
Mangosteen BIOMIMICRY The mangosteen is a popular fruit within Asian culture such as Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Thailand. The tree can grow up to 26 feet high. The shell of the fruit is stiff and bark-like to protect the inner part which contains about 4 to 8 segments of the white fruit. Within each individual white pulp, there is usually a seed.
FUNCTION Because the fruit is short-lived, the fruit itself must be kept so that the inner pulp within will stay moist. The dark bark-like shell serves its purpose to protect the pulp and seeds within while another yellow, latex-like layer beneath the rind serves its purpose of keeping the pulp moist.
DESIGN The shell of the fruit is designed to hold onto the white pulp in place. Since the rind is about 1/4 to 3/8 inches thick, it serves its purpose in protecting the fruit. The design of the mangosteen shell can be used in a packaging design where a kind of fragile food product needs an outer layer to protect it from breaking into pieces.
SUSTA INABLILTY Since the rind of the mangosteen is not extremely thick, but still serves its purpose of protecting the insides of the fruit, it can be a way to minimize the thickness of materials used to create a protective layer in product packaging.

Product Naming When brainstorming names for the product, I tried combining the two snacks, pretzel and hummus into one word. I chose HUMZ as the final name because it was simple, short and easy to say.
11
Sketches During the sketching process, I incorporated a pretzel into every logo sketch so that my audience will have a better idea of what the snack is by just looking at the logo. Since the product was going to be HUMZ, it was more on the playful side so using with a sans-serif typeface was the best choice.
12

Digital Mockups I digitalized my sketches in Adobe Illustrator and reduced it to my first top 3 logos (shown on the left). From the second logo, I did more revisions and the progress can be seen in the logos on the right side. Looking at the revised logos (right side), I first had the pretzel hanging on the top of the letter Z because I felt like the logo would be more balanced. The pretzel is then revised in order to make the pretzel hang naturally on the letter Z and also changed the pretzel into a similar shape as my product, a deli style pretzel. Another revision was needed because the typeface I originally used was too thin compared to the pretzel. Salt grains and shadows were also added to add dimension to the logo.
13
Final The finalized logo is designed to be playful with each letter arranged in a way where they look like they are dancing with a pretzel hanging from the “Z to create a visual of the pretzel dipping into the hummus.
Logo in color
The final logo can be used in either color or greyscale. The logo includes salt grains and shadows in both the letters and pretzel to add dimension and qualities of a pretzel throughout the entire logo.

Graphic Standard
16
Sketches Sketches of the graphic standard were drawn in order to give me a better visual of the entire graphic standard as a whole. Sketches of some ideas for specific pages were also there to give me some rough ideas of potential pages.
17
Logo When taking the logo’s dimensions into consideration, the dimensions of the logo’s white space will be in relation to “x”, which is the distance of the left shadow to the right shadow of the letter “H”. This will create visually pleasing aspect to the logo, as well as avoiding it being cluttered due to the amount of the salt grains and the placement of the letters.

Do not skew in any way.
Do not change the colors.
19
Typography The logo and business system consists of two typefaces, Din 1451 and Comfortaa. Din 1451 is used for the logo while Comfortaa is used in the business system. These two typefaces were chosen because Din 1451 was the most appropiate typeface that went along with the shape of the deli styled pretzel. Comfortaa was chosen as the second typeface because of its playfulness and readability.

Packaging
26
Creative Brief Needs The goal of this project is to create a sustainable and user-friendly packaging for flat pretzel chips and hummus by eliminating excess packaging materials. There is also a need in the market for promoting portion control for snacking with a new packaging that stresses the importance of using sustainable materials in its packaging.
Background Pretzels and hummus are becoming a popular snack, but are usually sold separately in stores made from non-recyclable materials for the packaging. It would be more convenient for the consumers if the market provided the snack in a sustainable packaged container. The packaging is also designed to promote healthy snacking through portion control. Some competitiors would include snacks that would contain something similar like hummus and pita chips, but our snack will be healthier since pretzels contain less calories than pita chips.
Project Objective The objective is to help create an aesthetically pleasing packaging with sustainable materials that will not harm the environment. Since the product is a snack, the packaging will also focus on portion control to reduce the chances of overeating. After our extensive research on biomimicry, the bamboo structure inspired the packaging in such a way where the segmented parts of a bamboo are the separated sections for the pretzel and hummus of the product.
Project Strategy When the project is completed, it will consist of the logo, graphics, and the product design. There will be a graphic standard for the usage of the logo and graphics, a business system that includes a 2” by 3.5” business card, 8.5” by 11” letterhead and a #10 4.125” by 9.5” envelope, a mockup of the final packaging, and a process manual with images and the thought process throughout this project.
Message Humz will provide the happiness you want to receive from snacking by providing both snacks in one packaging while encouraging a healthy lifestyle through portion control and better environment with its sustainable packaging.
Audience The targeted audience for HUMZ pretzel and hummus snack would be those who have little time to grab a quick bite in between meals. Our snack is targeted at both males and females from early teens to adults. This product will be sold at most grocery stores throughout the United States such as Safeway, Target, Whole Foods Market, and Trader Joe’s at an affordable price.
27
Sketches & Mockups When brainstorming for the product design, I kept the idea of biomimicry in mind. I aimed to design a packaging that had similar elements of a bamboo that would also keep the moisture of the hummus contained like pineapple leaves while keeping a durable shell like the mangosteen. I also considered the shape of the insides as well as how it would be placed on the self in stores.

The packaging is printed and laser cut on 100 lb. recycled wax cardboard. The inner wax lining will help keep the moisture stay within the packaging. The package will have a compostable plastic film that has a MVTR (moisture vapor transmission rate) of 0.15 gm per 100 in² per day and OTR (oxygen transmission rate) of 0.03 cc per 100 in² per day. This compostable plastic film is ideal for keeping the moisture of the hummus in as well as keeping the pretzels fresh for a longer period of time.

Final Packaging The final packaging is designed in a way where the snack is small enough to be able to take on-the-go. The shape is designed so that less materials will be used in the making of the packaging due to its similar shape to the pretzel. Biomimicry of the bamboo, pineapple leaves and mangosteen are incorporated into the design. It is similar to the bamboo’s inner segments due to the two compartments for the pretzel and hummus. The compostable plastic film and inner wax lining is similar to pineapple leaves in a way where they contain the moisture from escaping the package. As for the biomimicry of the mangosteen, the paperboard used to make the final package is durable enough so that the pretzels will not be crushed in any way. The information printed on the packaging includes the logo, type of pretzel, net weight, information on the snack, nutrition facts, allergy warning, storage information, expiration and manufactured dates and place, contact information, dietary and recycling symbols and a barcode.

Design Analysis
32
Introduction The purpose of this project is to redesign a more sustainable and user-friendly packaging for deli styled pretzels and hummus. Similar snacks in the market use excessive amount of materials in their packaging, but HUMZ is different in that the package is designed similar to the shape of the pretzel to reduce material use. The package is also smaller and portable to promote portion control and can be taken on the go.
Methodology Extensive research on biomimicry, sustainable materials, and nutritional values of the products were executed to confirm that HUMZ will be a snack that encourages portion control and a better environment. The package is also designed so that it perfectly fits the right amount of serving size without excessive material use.
Evaluation Problem Statement Many people have the mentality that snacking is bad for the health because it is seen to be consuming extra food in between meals, but in reality, snacking can help satisfy hunger in between meals instead of starving oneself. Unlike other similar snacks, the packaging for HUMZ is eco-friendly in that it is made out of recycled paperboard and is sealed with a compostable plastic film.
With the redesign of the snack, there are no excessive use of material and parts of the packaging is recyclable and compostable. The size of the packaging makes it easier for people to carry around. The film can be easily removed and the hummus compartment can be taken out if the consumer wishes to do so. The user-friendly and sustainable packaging are ideal goals for our future.
Project Summary Objective The objective is to promote portion control snacking in a sustainable packaging. The packaging is designed so that the consumer can enjoy snacking anywhere with its durableness and can avoid bloating from snacking too much. HUMZ also supports a better environment by only using sustainable materials in its packaging.
The results of this project were successful through thorough research on biomimicry and material usage. Properties of the bamboo, pineapple leaves and mangosteen were all used in the packaging, resulting in a sustainable yet durable package. The shape of the packaging successfully provides a secure grip, and the compostable film is easy to peel off for a user-friendly experience. This packaging lives up to its brand, creating a healthier lifestyle through portion control and a better environment with its sustainable material use.
