PORTFOLIO Juhee Porwal
A girl from New Delhi, with a background from Gujarat, Rajasthan and Kolkata, I am a traveler. My life has been focused around exploring cities, and deciphering it’s layers. Walking each street has made me realize that everything built has a narration of it’s own. This is my outlook towards architecture as well. It is, in my belief, a thread in the intricate web of our society, it’s people, their beliefs and the tangible expression of all of it. Through my work, I attempt to analyze this expression and translate it into an experience. Architecture, for me, is defined as a mirror image of our expression and the perception of our surroundings. As a person, I strongly believe in hard work. My zest to attempt something new and my belief that anything can be learnt through persistence, has made me enjoy my years of architecture education.

MEDWAY PAVILION
Project Site: Charleston, S.C. 5th Semester,2017 Studio Project, M.Arch Group Project, Clemson University School of Architecture
Studio V, Fall 2017, was charged with the task of designing, fabricating, and building a pavillion that would provide shaded space, storage area and seating for Medway Park in James Island, SC. We also provided our client, the Parks and Conservancy, with a proposed masterplan site layout for the entire park.

Hence the spaces were designed in section to understand their subterranean spatial qualities, through model and drawings.

INFORMING THE CITY CENTER
Embedding Knowledge creates a place to increase people’s awareness about the ever changing needs for a sustainable future. Educating people is fundamental to ensure that people are conscious of their choices. The architecture of this project expresses these ideas as physical parameters, while spatially merging the disconnected urban activities and landscape. Providing a learning hub in an active central downtown environment encourages the community to further their education independently in a library or a University Center. Integrating the urban activity to the North of the site and the landscape of a park to the South creates a merging landscape of embedded spaces that emerge as fragments across the site. These fragments create a variation of smaller and larger public spaces, which allows multiple users to coexist in the same space. By achieving a public layer on the ground and embedding the learning, these spaces, where education is encouraged, become more approachable. Hence knowledge becomes no longer associated with the notion of an institutional building dominating its landscape and the people in it; rather it brings the people above it.
The project challenged the understanding of delivering light and controlling natural ventilation in subterranean spaces. Passive design techniques were intentionally included to propose simple solutions for complex problems to allow the building to operate at a relatively lower maintenance and energy cost, rather than installing high tech mechanical systems.
“The former arguments for the porosity of architecture, urbanism and landscape can be reinforced with a testament for the porosity of spirit and matter as well as light’s effect through form, shade and shadow. Rather than a pre-occupation with solid, independent object-like forms, it is experiential phenomena of spatial sequences within, around and between which triggers emotions...” Steven Holl- Experiments in Porosity
A DIALOGUE WITH POROSITY The project aimed at tapping into the porous nature of the botanical gardens and the element of surprise, that one relishes as they wander in it. It also expects user interaction and the involvement of the tactile nature of the wall, which would guide them into various spaces.

THE TWISTING TOWER The aim of the project was to explore the potential of a Mobius Strip. Hence, in this iteration the mobius is rotated, spiral around and pinched from the top to exaggerate the feeling of continuity in the Z axis.

THE BOX Architectural craft lab introduced the students to design through a hands-on experience. This fall course introduced students to the discipline of craft using woodworking as a medium. It seeked to instill a craftsman’s approach to construction and a corresponding reconsideration of design.

REDEVELOPMENT OF SAFDARJUNG HOSPITAL India is undergoing health care transformation. The government has introduced important structural reforms in the last decade and has reemphasize its vision of creating access to health care facilities to all, through the public sector by proposing new hospitals and redevelopment of the existing. Safdarjung Hospital and AIIMS Hospital form the country’s largest health care supports and hence the project aimed at tapping into this potential of the site and adding to it.

REDEVELOPMENT OF ZONE- D 440 Hectares of low density land has been proposed under the Master Plan of Delhi 2021 for an increase in government housing. Through this studio, a critque was presented by incorporating a huge medical faculty in response to the national level hospitals in its surroundings, as well as accommodating the requirements of housing and hence chalenging the way in which the Master Plan of a city is made.
