Do You Know What A Session Junkie Is?
By Dave Sloan - Lawrence Juice
It’s been a year … or two.
Lots of things have changed. Lots of things have gone. And lots of things were put off. Was it really two years since we last had the St. Patrick’s Day Parade? It felt more like five. It was really nice to get out among our community with our family and friends, to see people face to face for the first time in a very long time, all anticipating the return of a long-established tradition. And it was really nice that the weather cooperated. The 2022 Celtic Roots Festival is taking place at the Lawrence Train Depot in North Lawrence, on April 9 this year. This would have been the fourth year of this event had it not been for COVID. One thing musicians like to do is get together with others and just play. Not so much for the performance, but just to get together and jam. For many it is a learning opportunity. Musicians tend to talk during or after a session. Putting together an acoustic style festival for Celtic players featuring local talent was an idea that worked its way through some Irish music sessions in Lawrence. Gary and Sabrina Hubert, of Olathe, KS took on this idea and with the help of Stevie Wilson-Davis they got the cooperation of several Lawrence and Kansas City musicians, to make the first festival happen in April of 2019. Not wanting to take anything away from the Kansas City Irish Fest, it was decided to hold the Celtic Roots Festival in Lawrence and earlier in the year. “Lawrence is a music loving town, and it’s kind of the right vibe for this,” said Gary. And whereas the KC event brings in many Irish groups playing electric instruments and more of an Irish Rock feel, “We wanted to concentrate on the more traditional styles and instruments. Keep it acoustic.” “This is more for local players rather than bands that are coming in from Ireland. We want to promote the local performers; give them the opportunity to increase their visibility,” said Gary. The Hubert’s love music and they love playing music, but they’ve never had a desire to be in a band. “Having no vested interest in promoting ourselves, we can place people in the lineup where we think they should be,” Gary explained. “Gary and Sabrina are being modest,” interjected Eric Ryan, a leader in the area’s Irish music scene. “Gary plays guitar very well and Sabrina is a great fiddle player. They both play at Kaw Valley Public House session pretty regularly.” “Yeah, there’s not a lot of sessions that we miss,” quips Gary. “So, we do get plenty of practice.” The Huberts got interested in playing Irish music about 10 years ago, “not as long compared to all the people we know, who have done this all their lives, you know, been in bands, some who have cut albums,” Gary says with a chuckle. “We’re newbies to this genre, but we just fell in love with it. In my case, you know, I played with a guitar, but I never really played it. We ended up taking a tune-
Ryan has always played music, and has been playing Irish music since the 1990’s. Before that he played in a few Jazz bands in Kansas City. “The one common denominator between Jazz and Irish music is the improvisation aspect. With Irish music, once you learn the melody you can do some amount of improv. That’s why learning by ear is really helpful. It’s just fun stuff.” With grants from the City of Lawrence and ExploreLawrence! along with support from Kaw Valley Public House, the Huberts have been able to bring this event together, offering several workshops during the first part of the day and music starting after the classes are finished. Right now, the festival is only one day, and while they are grateful for having the Train Depot available, they hope to find a larger venue for future events. Gary Hubert explained that they have had people in Topeka and Wichita express interest. There are traditional players in Tulsa, OK and other places who would want to come if a bigger, broader event could be arranged. learning class at the Irish Center in Kansas City. Sabrina put down the violin when she was 10 years old. So, she picked that back up. The next thing you know we’re playing this music.” “That is kind of why we are interested in educating people on this, because it is possible to learn this. And I’m the least musical person that has ever been born,” said Gary. “I can’t read music, I don’t know music theory. If you try to tell me about it, it goes over my head. But I have learned to play by ear and can probably play maybe 95% of the tunes that come up in a session.” “That is the way of Irish Music,” added Ryan. “Ideally it is better to learn by ear. It’s an oral tradition anyway. It is taught in Ireland that way. You just listen to people play and you really catch a lot of nuance that you would not get on sheet music. You learn the dots on sheet music, exactly what those notes are and there is no variation. If you listen to Irish music, you notice we never play it the same way through and through. We’ll do different ornamentations here and here, or change a note here or there. As you listen you will pick up on that and you actually get to hear instead of just learning one fixed way to play.” “People who learn to play by ear have a lot more flexibility,” said Gary. He went on to explain that part of the graduation from the tune-learning class was actually going out to a pub and playing in front of an audience. “You get to learn how to play in front of people, which is really scary the first time, but that was helpful too. It got us excited and was a lot of fun. That’s how we continue to learn, by just going out and playing.” “You guys are downright session junkies,” Ryan jokingly accuses. “It’s pretty darned impressive.” “Yeah, we’re kind of addicted,” agreed Sabrina.
Gerald Trimble, with band memberss Mark Wickersham, Allie Ryan, Stephen Brown, Clark Jameson, and Thomas Aber will be among the performers at the Celtic Roots Festival, on April 9, 2022. Photo courtesy of Gary Hubert

Fix-It-Chick: On the Question of Crabgrass
To seed or not to seed, that is the question. Spring is a great time to over seed an existing lawn. Sunshine is abundant in those normally shady spots and springtime rains assure an adequate supply of moisture. Spring is also the only time that crabgrass can be controlled with a pre-emergent. Unfortunately, seeding and crabgrass control don’t mix. Manufacturers recommend waiting four months after a pre-emergent is applied before planting new grass seed. Step 1: Crabgrass seeds begin to germinate when soil temperatures reach 50 degrees Fahrenheit. Preemergent must be applied as soon as grass seeds begin to germinate. As
luck would have it, yellow forsythia bushes bloom when the soil temperature reaches 50 degrees. Preemergent should be applied before the forsythia bushes are done blooming. If the yellow forsythia blooms are gone and lilac bushes are in full bloom, it is too late to use a pre-emergent for crabgrass control. Step 2: Pre-emergent is activated through hydration. Once preemergent has been applied, water the lawn with a fine soft spray. After its initial wetting, excessive rainfall or continued watering will inhibit the pre-emergent’s ability to restrict weed growth. Avoid applying pre-emergent when excessive rain is in the forecast.
Step 3: Pre-emergent acts as a protective barrier on top of the soil. Raking, scratching or in any way disturbing the ground in the weeks following pre-emergent application will compromise the pre-emergent’s effectiveness. Step 4: Corn Gluten is an environmentally friendly and affordable way to prevent crabgrass. A by-product of the corn milling process, corn gluten stops seeds from germinating while simultaneously fertilizing existing plants. Corn gluten inhibits seed germination and root production for up to six weeks. Apply 10-20 pounds of corn gluten per 1000 sq ft of lawn, water lightly and allow the lawn to dry completely. Infrequent watering coupled with

spring and fall application will enhance corn gluten’s ability to insure a chemical free, weed free, thick, luscious lawn. Step 5: If you can’t decide between over seeding or crabgrass control, try a product with the active ingredient Tupersan/Siduron. It is the only chemical on the market today which can selectively inhibit crabgrass germination while allowing fescues and other cool season grasses to grow. Tupersan/Siduron must be applied during or immediately following seed application. Left undisturbed, Tupersan/Siduron can control crabgrass for up to five weeks.
