CONTENTS +,$-&.%/!"! Wild Beasts’ fifth and latest album swaps out the exquisitely arty and textured moves of its predecessors for a howl that thirsts for blood and sex. So utterly compelling and carnal, the Boy King chases out the lushly swelling orchestras of his ancestors to make way for a bassy, funked-out electro-banging experience. It’s beastly and begs a thousand questions. Image courtesy of Domino Records.

Call it cliche, but I can’t think of any adventure wilder (short of ending up on Banged Up Abroad ) than Black Rock Desert’s Burning Man festival. It’s not because of the near-nude ladies in steampunk attire, the elaborate fire-spitting machines, or even the availability of psychotropic substances that makes the annual gathering so intriguing – it’s the concept of complete freedom of expression that excites and frightens me all at once. As the festival celebrates its 30th year with close to 70,000 attendees setting up camp in the barren expanse of the playa, the eradication of the societal barriers that prohibit us from being comfortable both in our own skin and with our fellow humans is one that I can’t wait to explore. And if that comfort culminates in wandering dusty plains as naked as a newborn baby, or partaking in a Thunderdome -style gladiator duel to the death, so be it .

Of all the boutique hotels in the world, I highly doubt that any can promise you a breakfast companion in the form of a Rothschild giraffe – and that’s exactly what Giraffe Manor offers. In a small suburb in Kenya, this historic manor has 10 rooms, each decorated after various wildlife notaries such as hunter Finch Hatton and author Karen Blixen. But the star attraction has to be the herd of giraffes that wander out of their forest sanctuary to mingle with guests. Guests are encouraged to interact with the gentle giants, as they poke their curious heads through the hotel windows, and feed them with treats. Unlike animal cafes that tout their critters for human entertainment, this hotel also operates a conservation programme for the endangered giraffes and hopes to introduce ’em back into the wild. thesafaricollection.com
“Let’s go on a crazy vacay!”, is a pledge that’s almost always accompanied by feats of intoxication, ‘out-there’ evidence for the social media feeds and a trip to the doctor’s. I’m not having any of that. To me, a truly wild getaway entails a legitimate measure of danger and not in the hang-out-in-an-alleyin-New-York kind of way. I want an element of risk to be fundamental to the space and I’ve finally found it in the Alnwick Poison Garden. Occupying 42 acres of land in Northumberland, England, the garden was opened to the public in 1750 and, as per the dictates of the Duchess Of Northumberland, has been dedicated to plants that kill. It houses 100 killer plants like Atropa belladonna (deadly nightshade), Strychnos nux-vomica (strychnine), and Conium maculatum (hemlock), to name just some. How cool would it be to stroll through such verdant greenery with all those killers all around you? alnwickgarden.com

Some might say he comes off as an utter monstrosity; others think he’s the apotheosis of the edgiest fashion extremity – but he doesn’t care. For Josiah Wise AKA serpentwithfeet, this polarity works just right. After all, he’s got both the words “Heaven” and “Suicide” tattooed on his forehead, along with a pentagram. Straddling binaries with a knife’s edge is his calling. That’s why the ‘pagan gospel’ he makes conveys sincere, sometimes heartwrenching, balladry on a fleet of ominous sounds. All this came after Wise finally accepted his queer and melancholy nature and ended the battle raging within him. This surreal tranquility is palpable on “Flickering” off his upcoming Haxan Cloak-produced EP, Blisters, which is a dark, lovely invitation into the journey within.

“HE WHO MAKES A BEAST OF HIMSELF GETS RID OF THE PAIN OF BEING A MAN”, THE SEMINAL ENGLISH POET AND CRITIC SAMUEL JOHNSON ONCE OBSERVED. BUT AS QUOTEWORTHY AS HIS WISDOM IS, IT’S ONLY HALF RIGHT. SHATTERING THE CONSTRUCTS OF CIVILISATION AND TAPPING INTO THE INNER BEAST IS FRAUGHT WITH ITS OWN COMPLEX PROBLEMS AND PAINS. THIS IS SOMETHING THAT THE LONDON-VIAKENDAL QUARTET, WILD BEASTS, HAS DEDICATED ITS EXISTENCE TO DRAMATISING IN A MANNER MOST GORGEOUSLY NUANCED AND INTELLIGENT; UNTIL NOW. THEIR FIFTH AND LATEST ALBUM, BOY KING, SWAPS OUT THE EXQUISITELY ARTY AND TEXTURED MOVES OF ITS PREDECESSORS FOR A HOWL THAT THIRSTS FOR BLOOD AND SEX. THE BOY KING CHASES OUT THE LUSHLY SWELLING ORCHESTRAS OF HIS ANCESTORS TO MAKE WAY FOR A BASSY, FUNKEDOUT ELECTRO-BANGING EXPERIENCE WITH A ROCKHARD WILL. IT’S STAGGERING, BEASTLY AND BEGS A THOUSAND QUESTIONS. HERE TO TELL THE TALE IS FRONTMAN HAYDEN THORPE.
Text Indran P Image Tom Andrew Interview courtesy of Domino Records
HELLO DARKNESS Make no mistake: this is a whole different beast from the one you’re used to. But extreme shake-ups in worldview rarely happen overnight. Usually, they’re triggered by catalysts like moments of personal reckoning, which, in Thorpe’s case, was heartbreak. But before he elaborates on that, he wants to revisit a simpler time: the band’s first show here, back in 2014. “It was a minor miracle”, he says. “We’re an outsider’s art band from a farming town in Northern England. Being able to play in Singapore gave us a sense of perspective on the things we’ve achieved and the places our music has travelled to”, follows a slightly wistful exhale. And then, Boy King happened. After a relationship came to an end, Thorpe was forced to confront the possibility that he was, after all, no different from the corrupt stereotypes of masculinity his band and him had long indicted. When asked what the biggest difference between Boy King and its four antecedents is, he answers unhesitantly with, “Attitude”. “Boy King, in many ways, is a reckless, foolhardy and dangerous record”. He laughs when he realises that this is the first time he can call a Wild Beasts record “dangerous”. Saturated in enough sex and bass to make The Weeknd take notes, Boy King is indeed dangerous. But it’s also more than that – it’s unflinchingly and gratuitously primal. There’s no reluctance or self-doubt in his voice when Thorpe qualifies himself: “On our other records, we were circumnavigating the abyss and staying outside of the darkness. This record embraces the darkness, dives into the abyss and revels in it; does backstrokes in it”. But Boy King is no disingenuous character. As we found out, there’s so much more to his world than just ‘letting go’. BASIC INSTINCT When you listen to a song, it shouldn’t ever surprise you that the personal becomes musical. What should surprise you is how
$%&'(
compellingly and thoroughly a musician’s lived experience informs and affects their music. With Wild Beasts, this happened earlier this year when Boy King’s lead single, the emphatically titled “Get My Bang”, was released into the world. It was prefaced by a press release from Thorpe where the references “all-conquering male” and “the Incredible Hulk” were the first warning signals. When the play button was hit, the full reveal was that much more vividly devastating. Gone, all gone, was the band’s grasp of filigreed beauty. In the wake of the death of ethereality was the advent of raw, feral funk with a digital bite and a red-blooded bounce, and Thorpe sing-moaning about “just getting it on”. These days, sex-drenched music is associated with fashion mag posturing. But there’s nothing stylised about the Wild Beasts approach here. Their loinclothed swagger is a churning blunt-force experience that’s without the cop-out of innuendo. It’s an expert retooling of funk’s organic feel into a mechanised update that affirms in dark red ink the inspiration and execution. When asked about the band’s total immersion in electronics here, Thorpe is helpfully illumining. “The electronic aspect is less of an aesthetic choice and more of an acknowledgement that electronic sounds get you quicker to where you need to be when you’re writing. It shortens the distance between the idea and the realisation of it”. And it’s the present culmination of four friends playing in the same band for the past 15 years – an awareness of each other’s instincts. YOUR SEX IS ON FIRE To appreciate Boy King’s full, engorged heft, it’ll do you well to look back at Wild Beasts’ catalogue. In the past, the band’s interest in the sexual centred mainly around how it manifested amidst the crushing hold of societal properness. Take this episode from 2014’s “Sweet Spot”, for instance: “A godly state / Where the real and the dream may consummate”. Beautiful. But Boy King isn’t so subtle. Here’s a selection of pickings: song titles like “Tough Guy” and “He The Colossus”, threats in the vein of “that’s how I get my bang”, “Alpha female, I’ll be right behind you”, “My dangerous baby weaponised” and “Just flutter those come-to-bed eyes”. “We’ve never used them with artistic license before. But we’ve since learnt that when used in the right manner, these tropes can be quite powerful”, Thorpe coolly opines, unconcerned that our jaw is on the floor. ALL IN ALL IS ALL WE ARE Boy King is, of course, a bundle of paradoxes. Here, the band unsubtly accomplishes the delicate task of differentiating the primal for the porn-y. When we tell Thorpe that we find the narrator’s descent into the depths of his inner animal much like Homer’s Odyssey, where the journey makes the narrative, Thorpe is encouraged. Boy King is also a cathartic journey and by the end of album closer “Dreamliner”, he wants for listeners to understand this: “The record describes the journey of a vulnerable boy who tries to become this commanding, macho king. The moral of the tale is that you can’t escape your inner being; your own truth”. When the Boy King, the “all-conquering male”, is brought down to earth after his journey, he is confronted by his shuddering vulnerability, need for acceptance and fundamental weaknesses. As Thorpe urges throughout the aforementioned song, we always “begin again” after every phase or saga. That is the fate of all beasts, especially the human ones.

EXILE ON MAIN ST (1972) THE ROLLING STONES They might be the biggest and richest band alive but at the time The Rolling Stones made their 10th album, they were dead broke. In 1971, after spending all the money they owed in taxes, the band had to leave Britain before the government could seize their assets. And so, they decamped to the south of France and recorded their magnum opus in the basement of a 16-room mansion called Nellcôte. Though surrounded by one of the most scenic views on the planet, the sessions were rough as the inflow of thousands of pounds of heroin strained ties between the Stones. Despite that, they gave the world one of the most free-flowing and fully realised counterculture statements.

BLOOD SUGAR SEX MAGIK (1991) RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS The Peppers’ antics with tube socks and Anthony Kiedis’ either unfathomably profound or face-palmingly ridiculous lyrics (“Do me like a banshee / Low brow is how / Swimming in the sound / Of bow wow wow”) have made them a pop cultural punchline. But let’s rewind to 1991 when the band was genuinely wacky. Wanting to record their fifth album in an unconventional setting, the band opted for the very haunted Houdini mansion, where the eponymous magician once lived. All band members, except for drummer Chad Smith, who was fearful, lived in the house for the duration of the recording. Smith’s concerns weren’t unwarranted, as before long, sighting of ghosts were observed by the band. But because this is RHCP, guitarist John Frusciante saw nothing wrong in pleasuring himself before them.
!"#$%&"'(% ()"'*+,-#"
THE DOWNWARD SPIRAL (1994) NINE INCH NAILS By now, it should come as no surprise that Trent Reznor is one of rock music’s most unsparing provocateurs. But unlike those who merely strike poses and strut around in ‘out there’ costumes, Reznor’s sickness is real. Case in point: his insistence on recording NIN’s second album in 10050 Cielo Drive, the luxury home in which ’60s movie star and sex symbol, Sharon Tate, was murdered by members of the Manson Family cult. Unfazed and inspired by its dark history, Reznor rented the house in 1992, built a studio in there called Le Pig – named after the message that was scrawled on the front door with Tate’s blood by her murderers – and recorded what many regard as the gold standard of industrial rock.
OK COMPUTER (1997) RADIOHEAD
Ok Computer belongs to a class of albums whose status as fountainheads of brilliance, if doubted, paints the naysayer as a reflexive contrarian; or worse, an unenlightened pleb. Be that as it may, the genesis of the record is not one of studioengineered, precisioncrafted perfectionism. Rather, the record was born in St. Catherine’s Court, a Tudor manor house in Bath, England. Throughout the years, guitarist Jonny Greenwood has claimed that the sessions were unlike a laboratory experiment – which is what being in a studio is like – and more akin to a group of people making their first record together. Indeed, there were all types of serendipitous, history-book moments, including the band recording “Exit Music (For a Film)” on a stone staircase to better capture the echoes.

HLIÐSKJÁLF (1999) BURZUM The story of Burzum – masterminded by Norwegian black metal savant, Varg Vikernes, one of the most controversial figures in music – is indelibly part of heavy metal lore. In 1993, he stabbed black metal impresario, Euronymous, 23 times. For this, and a spree of church burnings, he was sentenced to 21 years in prison; the maximum sentence in Norway. It’s proof of the country’s much-publicised penal system’s emphasis on ‘rehabilitation’ rather than ‘retribution’ that Vikernes was allowed to record albums in jail, including 1999’s Hliðskjálf. There was one qualifier though: the only instruments he was allowed to use were a synthesiser and a glockenspiel. This explains the ambient, more contemplative turn in his career, and the unmistakably folk feel of that particular album.
CAMPFIRE SONGS (2003) ANIMAL COLLECTIVE Animal Collective’s reputation for tripped-out, psychedelic WTF zaniness dates back to even before they became the entity that is Animal Collective. Before AC, Avey Tare, Deakin and Panda Bear recorded albums under a number of different names – including Avey Tare and Panda Bear; Avey Tare, Panda Bear, and Geologist; and, in 2003, Campfire Songs. Under this name, the band released an eponymous album of experimental folk songs, which was recorded while sitting on a porch in the band’s native Maryland in a freezing November winter. Since the album was recorded outdoors, crickets and other natural sounds are clearly audible throughout the album, which was recorded in its entirety on MiniDisc and in one take. Talk about organic.

FOR EMMA, FOREVER AGO (2007) BON IVER Though it’s only been six years since Bon Iver’s name-making debut album was released, it’s already a classic of devastated, insular, wounds-aplenty folk. This is one of those rare albums which owes its existence almost entirely to its backstory. In 2006, after the breakup of his old band, DeYarmond Edison, and coming down with mononucleosis, frontman Justin Vernon spent the winter recuperating in his family’s remote Wisconsin cabin. In utter seclusion, he hunted for his own food and mediated on the pains of his life. And it was there that he wrote and recorded Emma. The reverberations of Justin Vernon’s music and vocals within the wooden walls of the cabin gave it the feel of an echo chamber – which made Vernon’s pain all the more universal.
HOPE SIX DEMOLITION PROJECT (2016) PJ HARVEY While her catalogue is a canon of expectation-bludgeoning music, Harvey decided to switch things up for her ninth and most recent offering. Earlier this year, she – as much as Hope Six Demolition Project, the album she was in the process of making – became a spectacle when she recorded the album in front of a live audience in London’s Somerset House, as part of an art installation called ‘Recording In Progress’. Through one-way glass, and for 45 minutes at a time, viewers could see Harvey and her collaborators bring the album to life. That cellphones and all recording devices were confiscated beforehand added to the quietly groundbreaking nature of this Harvey creation. You had to be there to witness it.

IT WAS IN THE ’90S THAT UNIVERSALLY RELATABLE GUITAR-DRIVEN POP AND ROCK MUSIC REACHED ITS PEAK – THAT’S WHY WE ALWAYS LOOK BACK WISTFULLY. THIS HAS POSED QUITE THE CONUNDRUM FOR CONTEMPORARY BANDS TRAFFICKING IN ’90S-BORN SOUNDS; BUT NOT FOR LONDON QUARTET, YUCK. AS MODERN INDIE ROCK’S UNQUESTIONABLE STANDARD-BEARERS, MAX BLOOM, MARIKO DOI, JONNY ROGOFF, AND ED HAYES ARE FAITHFUL TO THE BYGONE GOLDEN AGE WHILE FORGING AHEAD ON A PATH THAT’S DISTINCTLY THEIR OWN. BEFORE HE MAKES YOU SHAKE AND SWOON AHEAD OF THEIR UPCOMING SHOW HERE, FRONTMAN BLOOM TELLS IT LIKE IT IS. Stranger Things was recorded with no budget and at your parents’ house. What led to that more relaxed approach? It was a reaction to recording our second album in a studio, which was a very different experience because I was outside my comfort zone. I’ve always felt that if you’re doing things on your own terms, creativity flows a lot more naturally. In a studio, you’re constantly thinking about time and money and I just wanted our next record to be more fun.
and music are great; they keep people very excited. But, ultimately, they come and go. When I started this band, I wanted to make music that would last and which wouldn’t be part of some fleeting moment. Like the canon of ’90s music, Yuck’s is familiar and comforting. Was this something the band consciously intended? I’m really happy that you feel like that, but I wouldn’t say it’s conscious on our part. We’ve never made an effort to hide our influences and if that’s what people like about us, it’s fine.
With all that’s happening in the U.K., what’s the climate for musicians over there? I grew up in London, but it hasn’t been easy to live there as a musician or any sort of creative since the ’90s. It’s a struggle but I’m hoping this political turmoil inspires some good new music. That’s what usually happens. Right now, it feels like the government’s completely ignoring the creative industry. The lead single “Hold Me Closer” plays like an homage to Built To Spill. Would you say that ’90s indie rock is Yuck’s main musical reference point? Yes, Built To Spill is one of my favourite bands. But when I make music, I try to let it flow as subconsciously as possible and write things as honestly as possible. In that way, you’ll know what I’m inspired by without me having to force it. That song was written in 20 minutes – it felt good and I just let it happen.
What do you remember of your Laneway 2012 show in Singapore and what’s got you excited about coming back? The show was the best one of Laneway, for sure. We unanimously felt that Singapore was the best stop on the tour. It was really wild and we were so tired! Singapore was our last stop on Laneway and by the end of the festival, I remember thinking that I had the best week of my entire life. We’ve never played our own headlining show, so I’m glad we’ll get to do that once we come back.

In the years since Daniel’s departure, you’ve come into your own as the frontman. How has the transition been for you? In the beginning, it was challenging and overwhelming. It felt like a really big change in my life. But it didn’t take long for me to enjoy it. In that way, I’ve never really felt the pressure.

1-ALTITUDE SOUNDS OFF F1 WITH THE CIRCUIT
kimkat (los angeles)
kenneth g (amsterdam)
It’s that time of the year where glitz, glam, bling, swag, and thrills get revved up and unleashed at full-speed. F1 season is upon us and besides the turbo-charged cars and international megastars enlisted to soundtrack this spectacle of sights and speed, there are also parties aplenty for you to make merry at. Of the lot, 1-Altitude’s The Circuit – back and bigger than ever in its sixth edition – is the most highly anticipated. With a vantage point that’s impossible to beat, and three days of high-energy activities, The Circuit is the definitive shindig to rally the troops for. Let's start with the view. At 282m above sea level and offering a 360-degree perspective of the race, 1-Altitude ensures a visual splendour that is truly panoramic. But besides watching Lewis Hamilton and co. attempt to break the sound barrier, you can also enjoy the intoxicating creations from the 1-Altitude Gallery and Bar, the highest al fresco bar in Asia. Adding to the ambience will be the gloriously thumping sounds emanating from the DJ console. On September 16, at the Martini party, DJ Katty Q (Moscow) will supply the good stuff. It’s for good reason that the Russian firecracker has been hailed by the global dance community as the “Queen Of Mashups” – her Open Format tastes will surely keep you jiving all night long. At the Altimate Circuit Party, in association with Johnnie Walker Gold Reserve, is where the in-demand DJ duo of KimKat (Los Angeles) will hold court on September 16. Garnering praise from Diplo, Kanye West, and TJR, the Scratch Academy alumni also

opened for Steve Aoki during his Asia tour in 2013 – which means they know how to get a party going. The next day will see Altimate lock arms with Belvedere for the aptly named Full Throttle party, featuring DJ Kenneth G (Amsterdam) on deck duties. Besides being celebrated by Tiësto, Hardwell, Sander van Doom and Laidback Luke, to name just some heavyhitters, the Dutch electro-house mainstay has also worked with Nicky Romero and Bassjackers. If you’ve danced to his smash singles “Bazinga” and “Wobble” in a club setting, just imagine how his sounds will work you 61 floors up. Stretching throughout all three days will be the Day To Night Farmers' Market at Stellar, the resplendent 16,000sqft multi-cuisine restaurant with a slew of awards and honours to its name. While you’re taking in the race, tuck into the offerings from over 25 pop-up vendors that will cater to all your gastronomic needs. Expect Uncle G’s handmade crispy roast pork, artisanal gins, Clessidra’s selection of Italian wines and produce, a vast variety of champagnes, and desserts by Pastry Chef Jasmin Chew – Stellar will have all you can ask for in taste and flavour.
The Circuit is proof that it’s not just the F1 drivers who get to savour the thrills, exhilaration and finer things of the race – you can too. Save the dates, now. The Circuit happens from September 16 to 18 at 1-Altitude. For more information, visit www.facebook.com/1altitude

Taking hard knocks. I wrote the single “Pretty Vacant” right after my divorce, when I was in between houses. I was trying to figure out where I was going to live and what I was going to do next. A lot of the words in the song were just things I was saying to myself while I was sitting in this empty apartment by myself. A sneak peek into Vacancy. It is a uniquely honest record. It’s really all about thinking you have something figured out and then the rug gets pulled from under you and you are left trying to pick up the pieces. Dealing with haters. For a long time I’ve felt that the way to achieve common ground is through understanding. We obviously would like the ‘less enlightened’ people amongst us to see where we are coming from, but it’s as important to understand where they are coming from and why they think the way that they do. I wrote “Dancing With Idiots” because I could
years ago, we set out to be a band that would last a long time and mean enough to people – that they would still listen to us after they grew up and that their kids would follow suit.
The shape and state of punk. I think punk is what you make of it. It’s being who you are and owning it. It doesn’t mean that you have to be a rebel, but if you are, own it. If what is in your heart is to follow the rules and encourage others to also, then that’s just as punk to me. It’s about being who you are because you’re not afraid to be yourself.
The popularity of “Beautiful Girls”. I think it’s a little strange but I guess it makes sense. I doubt it’s all Bayside fans listening to our Sean Kingston cover over other Bayside songs. It’s one of our most popular songs; mostly people search for “Beautiful Girls” and stumble across ours. Any way anyone might get turned on to what we’re doing is fine by me.
The hometown influence. There is an honest and unapologetic mentality in Queens, New York. Anyone from The Ramones to Run DMC to Nas did what felt right to them and never looked back or faked it. That ideology is probably the driving force for us. The next step. Hopefully putting out more music. Sixteen
Long due in Singapore. Honestly, we’ve talked about playing in Singapore a lot but the promoters seem to think there isn’t much of a demand. So if anyone wants us to, they should make it known to us and to the local promoters.

Keeping busy In the four years between Origins and Solve et Coagula, we were actually very active. We played a few shows for Origins in Indonesia after its release. The following year, we did a split release with ANECHOIS called Polymorphous. After which, both our bands toured Indonesia. We took a break between 2014 and 2015 to write and produce new songs.

Opening for Deafheaven It was so cool! We never expected to open for such a big band, so we were surprised when Errol from KittyWu Records approached us. It’s definitely one of our key milestones. They were such nice guys. We were together a lot back stage, just chilling. From their questions to us, we could see that they were very keen on learning about Singaporean and Asian culture. Musical alchemy Solve et Coagula is a practice in alchemy which means “dissolve and coagulate”. That was our approach on this album as well. We wanted to dissolve the structure of screamo music and fuse the different parts with a coagulation of other genres. This led us to expand our horizons beyond screamo. Origins was a basic template of how we wanted to sound like, and we were also still young then. This album is a showcase of how we sound now. Going big It’s been a trademark of ours to have huge, 10-minute-long songs. Origins was also opened by a grand, long song and we wanted this format with Solve et Coagula too. These epic songs are our way of showing that we’re not doing what other bands are. We’ve always done what we wanted to do – there’s no point in being in a band if you sound like everybody else. In our music, emotion, intensity and dynamics, like time signature changes, are very important. The long march to progress This band has been around for 12 years and it’s crazy how much we’ve grown in that time. We’ve all matured as individuals, with work and relationships testing us along the way. Our experiences with each other and as individuals have definitely helped our songwriting. It’s also been great to have Ariff on guitar duties now. He’s brought a whole new dimension to our sound.
WHEN YOU GIVE IT YOUR ALL AND DEVOTE EVERYTHING YOU HAVE TO A PARTICULAR PURSUIT, IT’S BOUND TO BE NOISY. LOCAL SCREAMO OUTFIT PARIS IN THE MAKING CAN TESTIFY TO THAT. IN THEIR 12-YEAR HISTORY, THUNDERINGLY LOUD AND SPECTRALLY ETHEREAL SOUNDS HAVE CLASHED INTO A VIVID TAPESTRY THAT’S HUNG OVER THE LOCAL UNDERGROUND AND BURNT LIKE AN EXEMPLARY BEACON. BUT ON THEIR NEW ALBUM SOLVE ET COAGULA, THE FOLLOW-UP TO THEIR 2012 ALBUM, ORIGINS, EVEN THEIR COLOSSAL IMPRINT HAS BEEN TRANSCENDED. TOGETHER WITH NEW GUITARIST AHMAD ARIFF, SALIHIN SADON, SUHAYL AGOES DJAJA, SYAHMI SAMAD, AND SYAHADI SAMAD, HAVE CROSSED A NEW FRONTIER. UNCOVER THE INSIGHT BEHIND THEIR DEVASTATING SCREAM.

Silencing the haters We’re aware that screamo has been criticised for supposedly being too formulaic. But we don’t think that’s true. As a band, we know what we want to sound like and we’re going to keep making music, no matter what people think of the genre. Of course, constructive feedback is important; we’re more than happy to find out how we can grow. Screamo is such a large, diverse movement. If people bothered to look, they’ll see how much great music there is. Lion City hardcore So much has changed in the last 12 years. Though we’ve been around for a while, we’re always mindful of our seniors who came before us and paved the way for the scene. Right now, things are more fragmented here. Certain DIY venues have closed down, but we shouldn’t dwell on the past. The future is what we’re all working towards.

JAPANESE BREAKFAST LIKE LOVE, TRAGEDY IS A RELIABLY GENEROUS MUSE. BUT IT IS ALSO JUST THAT: TRAGEDY. AFTER HER MOTHER WAS DIAGNOSED WITH THE CANCER THAT WOULD EVENTUALLY CLAIM HER LIFE, SINGER AND GUITARIST MICHELLE ZAUNER REVISITED HER CACHE OF LO-FI RECORDINGS AND ENRICHED THE SKELETAL SONGS AS A WAY TO COPE WITH THE PAIN. LIKE HER UNSEEMLY MONIKER, THE RESULTING ALBUM, PSYCHOPOMP, SEES THE KOREAN-AMERICAN MUSICIAN COLLAPSE APPARENTLY OPPOSITIONAL POLES INTO A UNIFORM EMOTIONAL PLANE. ONE WHERE THE JOURNEY THROUGH PERSONAL LOSS IS A UNIVERSAL IMPERATIVE, WHERE TEARS OF GRIEF AREN’T ALL THAT REMOTE FROM TEARS OF JOY. HERE, SHE TAKES US BY THE HAND THROUGH THAT JOURNEY.
Psychopomp is filled with quirky metaphors like “I wanna churn like / Amish butter” from “Heft”. What was your headspace when writing the song? I started that song as part of a ‘song a day’ project with Frankie Cosmo, Eskimeaux, Florist, and Small Wonder. The first half was written around the time I suspected that my mum had some serious health issues, but it wasn’t confirmed until two days later. The second half I wrote after she passed away. I was thinking about Amish butter because I was living in Philadelphia at the time. There is a large Amish population there and a significant other had introduced me to how delicious and creamy Amish butter is. I think the song is about just trying to move forward through a situation of impending doom. What does the title, Psychopomp, mean to you? I read about the word ‘psychopomp’ in Carl Jung’s dreams. I was interested in psychology because I’m not a religious person and I wanted some structure to navigate my emotions. I thought the word sounded cool, like “psychotic pop”, which I think the album can sound like sometimes, but didn’t know what it was at the time. When I looked into it, I realised it just fit the material perfectly. In Greek mythology, a psychopomp is a guide that brings a soul to the afterlife. In some ways, I really felt like that was my role of support for my mother.
%&'(!
How did you feel once the album was finished? In a lot of ways, I felt like this album was a conversation with myself. I was very confused by my grief; very shocked. I’m generally a very outspoken person and, all of a sudden, I felt very quiet and unable to relate to or communicate with anyone, or even understand what I needed from other people. This album really functioned as my way of sorting through those feelings. At the same time, a lot of Psychopomp feels incredibly cathartic. Do you feel that contemporary music has lost that ability to touch people in that way? No, because a lot of contemporary music feels cathartic to me. More recently, Björk’s Vulnicura and Sufjan Stevens’ Carrie & Lowell have had that effect on me. Those albums sound so personal and liberating, and it’s amazing that artistes on that high a pedestal are still able to tap into such an immensely vulnerable place. You’re currently touring with Mitski and Jay Som, who are both Asian-Americans too. How do you feel about the recent increase in AsianAmerican representation in popular culture? I think it’s so wonderful; it makes me so happy. I can’t wait to see it grow and grow. I have so many Asian-American people come up to me after shows and thank me for just doing what I love to do. I hope it encourages more Asian-Americans to pursue the arts in the future.

PAWS
In 2010, when the band formed, and under a different lineup, they didn’t expect to last as long as they have. Personnel changes and two slept-on records followed before their third full showing, No Grace, released earlier this year. It testifies to their standing in the bigger scheme of things that Blink 182 honcho Mark Hoppus signs off on it as producer. And it’s now that the power of PAWS has solidified for a wider audience to be inspired – and feared – by. The triumphs of No Grace can be quantified by its additions and subtractions. Unlike predecessors Cokefloat! and Youth Culture Forever – which celebrated, a little too disingenuously, the reckless abandon that comes with being young and brusque – No Grace accepts that real life is far too complex to be met with a mere puff-chested pose. Throughout the album’s 10 tracks, the band deals with existentialist tropes with a spirit that’s wary of vapid empowerment cliches and shallow defeatism. With self-correcting maturity, the chorus of the titular single addresses you with this sobering revelation: “We, we are so young and barely born / How can you say that you’re so bored? / You don’t even know who you are yet / Cut the crap and give until you got no more”. But it’s not all a sermon on the ‘ways of the world’. No Grace dips into the hard-edged sounds of the ’80s and ’90s, and surfaces with a newfound dynamism that’s faster and louder – it’s a statement of clawing urgency.

But that’s a tricky proposition in and of itself – the margin of error between trying too hard and not trying at all is fatally slim. This is why Glaswegian band PAWS are legitimate heroes. Frontman-guitarist Phillip Taylor, bassist Ryan Drever, and drummer Josh Swinney raise a sublime racket that’s sincere, empowering and writ large with an IDGAF ethos – and they don’t sound like they’re trying to please you.

TIGER ARMY (1999) Won over by Tiger Army’s debut EP, Temptation, the venerable Tim Armstrong, frontman of Rancid and owner of Hellcat Records, invited 13 to record an album under his label. Thus, the first Tiger Army album was born.
TIGER ARMY II: POWER OF MOONLITE (2001) On their second showing, the band so throughly incorporated elements of psychobilly and horror into their sound that the world began taking notice. Though heavy and harsh, this set of songs baffles the ears with its sense of melody and pacing.
TIGER ARMY III: GHOST TIGERS RISE (2004) Like all early-in-the-game young bands, Tiger Army had to grow up, and this was the canvas for that phase. Embracing blues into their fold now, 13 and co. brought raw emotion to bear on goth tropes, shortening the distance between either pole.

FRIEND INDEED INVASION SINGAPORE &'(
Text Indran P Image Alvin Ho
BY NOW, YOU MUST KNOW THAT THERE’S MORE HAPPENING IN MADE-IN-SINGAPORE MUSIC THAN EVER BEFORE. AMPLIFYING THIS RENAISSANCE IS INVASION SINGAPORE, A COMMUNITY-LED INITIATIVE DEDICATED TO TAKING LOCAL MUSIC INTO THE MAINSTREAM. HERE, WE SPEAK TO ITS HEAD OF PRODUCTION, ADIN KINDERMANN – WHOM YOU MIGHT ALSO KNOW AS THE FRONTMAN OF INDIE ROCK SWASHBUCKLERS, STOPGAP – TO FIND OUT HOW *SCAPE HAS BEEN A BOON AND INVALUABLE RESOURCE TO THE LOCAL MUSIC SCENE. How has *SCAPE helped Stopgap throughout its musical journey? We started in 2011 and back then, we could only play really small shows. We had to cold call and email random people to get gigs. Most of the shows we played back then were with hardcore punk bands, which was weird for us. Eventually, Adeline, from *SCAPE’s programming arm invited us to play for *SCAPE Confessions. It was through this initiative that we met more people and played more shows, especially studio shows with other bands. It built a community that we became a part of.
What separates these platforms from others out there? Confessions and Confestival are great for young bands because they’re not merely places to play. Say, you’re a young band that just finished secondary school and has written some songs – everything after this point is a question mark. It was the same with Stopgap – we were clueless. *SCAPE made us feel safe because it’s an organisation dedicated to the youth; we knew we were in the right hands. There’s a focus to what *SCAPE does. That’s what makes it a great stepping stone.
Tell us more about Confessions. They are basically outdoor concerts that happen every Saturday, featuring local bands that play covers and/or originals. Since they are held at the *SCAPE Bandstand, it gives young musicians a legitimate platform to perform and showcase their talents. I think it also builds confidence and character by exposing them to a crowd – they get to see people reacting to their music. There’s also another initiative called Confestival that is bigger in scale.
What’s Stopgap’s personal relationship with *SCAPE like? Having our album launch at the Ground Theatre was the biggest thing that we did with *SCAPE. We were looking for a venue to hold the show and we were short on funds. So, we made an enquiry with them to find out how much it’d be to have our launch there. We were very surprised when they decided to sponsor our show. All we paid for was the utilities fee. I’m still amazed that it happened. It proves that

when you build a relationship with like-minded people, awesome things can happen. Lastly, how do you think the *SCAPE School Invasion tours help spread an awareness of local music? It does so in two ways: by impacting musicians and the youth, which, in this case, are students. If you’re a band on the lineup, and if the students like your music, the spillover effect is amazing. Imagine playing to 1000 kids – even if they don’t know who you are, they’ll respond positively if they like your music. This will carry on in social media, where they’ll share your songs and videos. And on the audience end, it exposes young people to local talent that they never knew existed. It shows them that making music in Singapore is not just possible, but viable, and that there’s a lot of good music to go around. That’s the most important aspect of the tour – inspiring young people to go out there make their own art.

If you were at the South London band’s first Singapore show in January last year, you’d have realised from the sheer size of the screaming crowd that they’re hot property here. Since that overwhelmingly successful show, the band’s gone on to become a Grammy-nominated proposition that has graduated to a new level of artistry. After their 2013 debut album Bad Blood – which spawned a whopping seven singles, including the festival favourite “Overjoyed” – the band will unveil its follow-up, Wild World, later this month. And if the single “Good Grief” is anything to go by, we have a whole lot of dance-ready synth-rock coming our way.
HALSEY One of the greatest gifts of the YouTube revolution is that it’s allowed some tremendously talented, undiscovered musicians to surface before a wider audience. Halsey, born Ashley Nicolette Frangipane, is one of those testimonies. From uploading homespun covers to the video streaming service, to releasing her self-penned hit “Ghost” on SoundCloud, and to eventually signing with powerhouse electronic label Astralwerks from whence her debut album, Badlands, was released in 2015, her star has only been rising. Take that as a sign that her first showing in Singapore will be nothing short of monumental. Also, she counts Quentin Tarantino as a main influence – imagine how that will translate live.
IMAGINE DRAGONS Every now and then, a song is released into the ether that’s heard everywhere. With their single “Radioactive”, this Las Vegas band claimed the honour of making one such song. Besides being one of the bestselling singles in the history of recorded music, “Radioactive” showcases how seamlessly its makers were able to blend rock and electronic sounds into a battle cry of blockbuster proportions. In this age of minimal, low-hanging bass-fuelled production, the band stands tall as a beacon of maximalism – young guns who’ve learnt from their elders and are making their own epic moves. Theirs is truly a sound that rivals the vroom vroom of the souped-up racecars.

2016 FORMULA 1 SINGAPORE AIRLINES SINGAPORE GRAND PRIX QUEEN + ADAM LAMBERT Metallica drummer, Lars Ulrich, once had this to say about Queen: “The worst day of my life was when my mum didn’t allow me to go to a Queen concert because I was grounded”. And here’s Muse’s Matt Bellamy, gushing uncharacteristically, “The best band in the world is Queen, definitely”. That is a consensus that many the world over have reached. And though the former centerpiece, Freddie Mercury, may not walk the earth anymore, he’s found his legacy ably continued by Adam Lambert. With the flamboyance, charm and dashing provocateur spirit – not to mention that sky-reaching vocal range – Lambert is a main attraction in his own right.
PENTATONIX
As the biggest, most singular a cappella group of all time, the Texan quintet is in a lane of its own. As proven by previous sold-out shows in Singapore, we can’t seem to get enough of Avi Kaplan, Scott Hoying, Kirstin Maldonado, Kevin Olusola, and Mitch Grass. Each brings such a special and distinct ingredient to the band’s imprint that it’s so tempting to think of them as a precision-engineered musical development. Thankfully, they are not. In everything they do, whether it’s their Internet-breaking cover of a medley of Daft Punk songs or their first original album, Pentatonix, it’s impossible not to see flair and soul intersecting in dazzling ways.
KC AND THE SUNSHINE BAND Spreading that irresistible feel-good feeling is one of the most crucial reasons people will never stop listening to music. And this Floridian collective has been trafficking in just that for the past 40 years. Tapping into the idioms of disco and funk, the band, led by frontman-producer Harry Wayne Casey, has a body of work that proves that good, limbunlocking music will always be evergreen, no matter which trend takes temporary roost in popular culture. If you’ve ever tried to stop yourself from moving to the slick groove of “Boogie Shoes”, because it’s your ‘parents music’, then you know that resistance is futile. You can’t fight the Sunshine.

The youth shall inherit the earth – that’s the conclusion we’ve arrived at after nine years of attending the Ignite! series of festivals. Organised almost entirely by the students of Republic Polytechnic, Ignite! has proven to be a two-day music spectacular, boasting a growth in scale mirrored by an incremental surge in the number of attendees each year. This is especially encouraging to the larger cause of local music, which Ignite! has always celebrated throughout the length and breath of its lineups. This year, it saw some of the scene’s most enchanting newcomers lock arms with path-lighting veterans to deliver what were undeniably incredible performances. Given that last year’s edition of the festival drew a 14,000-strong crowd, our expectations of 2016’s were high, to say the least. And while the sun was at its full glory when the festival began, it did not deter fans from coming through and egging their champs on. Synthpop scene-stealer Disco Hue was the first to take the stage. As with all talents around which buzz swirls irrepressibly, the appeal this band commands lies in its ability to communicate via its best attributes: its hooks. And these, the band delivered via spectral synth-scapes and frontwoman Sherlyn’s lovely coos. This theme was furthered by Linying, the alt-pop chanteuse who enthralled from the moment of her opener, a lilting cover of Bon Iver’s “Heavenly Father”.
Day two of the festival blasted off to a highly melodic start as The Summer State brought their pop-punk gifts to the fore. Frontman, Bryan Ulric Sta Maria, will be remembered as the most energetic showman of the festival. Coming on next, Tell Lie Vision was no pushover – their post-hardcore moves were legitimately epic and paved the way for rap-hardcore alchemists, Young. They delivered the loudest, most juddering set of the proceedings, which – given that they were one of the youngest bands on the lineup – was awesome.
take two
Returning heroes always know how to strike a chord and Republic Polytechnic alumni, Bear Culture, did just that. The pummeling majesty of their hard rock theatrics was assuredly one of the festival’s key takeaways. Punk once again took hold as Iman’s League shook the stage with their raucous-but-melodic stylings – the sing-along during their beloved single “Lisa” was another one for the memories.
linying
And then it was time for the legends. Plainsunset – the band which all bands on the lineup grew up listening to – claimed the stage and gave us all a back-to-basics trip through emo gold. The soaring cheers when classics like “Postcards From Paradise” were played were symbolic of the storied and emotionally resonant history of local music and, the perfect nostalgia trip. After all this, we can only wonder how Ignite! 2017 will sound.

Into this lush tapestry of texture then entered the voluptuous grooves and monumental riffs of Stopgap. As always, their balance of technicality with a spontaneous charm was impressive, and proof that you can unleash rock & roll firepower without being cheesy. Following their almighty racket, These Brittle Bones, stepped forth and cast his spell over the crowd. The Welsh transplant’s handle on slow-burning electronica did such good work
on the crowd that the response he got from it seemed to overwhelm him too – and that was beautiful to behold. Closing out day one after him, were homegrown rapper THELIONCITYBOY and genre-confounding quintet Take Two. Their respective sets drew some of the loudest bursts of applause of the festival – like when Benjamin Kheng unexpectedly joined TLCB onstage for his new single “YAYA”.

But while we expect purveyors of highoctane EDM to be inking deals with athletic brands, indie-minded console dance meisters are in on it too. Hot Chip’s Alexis Taylor and Joe Goddard are teaming up with Nike for a special “highintensity workout experience” in East London. The event features a “bespoke” soundtrack by Taylor and Goddard, as well as a light installation by Artisan. Attendees can choose from one of two workouts. The nature of the pairing is such that it can’t possibly be an isolated event. Who knows? Maybe, Grimes could soundtrack a Skechers-run tantric yoga session?
We very often expect sterling conduct from our musical heroes knowing full well that it’s unreasonable. But even then, these icons made a fool of themselves with their recent misbehaviour.

How great is it that boundaries are crumbling? In music, the latest manifestation of this is the production partnership of Mark Ronson and Tame Impala’s Kevin Parker, who lent their hands to Lady Gaga’s impending single “Perfect Illusion”. Though no snippet of the song has been shared/leaked, what we’ve come to expect from each of these parties should definitely give you cause for excitement. The Ronson-Parker teamup first happened on “Daffodils”, off Ronson’s 2015 album Uptown Special and that turned out gloriously trippy. It’s a fact that Billy Corgan is the sole proprietor of The Smashing Pumpkins name. Even after the original lineup parted ways, he went on to release a slew of albums under that moniker that, though weren’t all that bad, made everyone wish for the Pumpkins of old. Now, that dream might become a reality! In a recent Facebook Live video, Corgan said that he spoke to Wretzky for the first time in about 16 years, and that the band’s original lineup is back in contact. For her part, Wretsky’s said that she would consider rejoining the band at some point.

Post-hardcore commands some of punk’s most fiercely impassioned loyalists. So, when Californian institution Touché Amoré announced that it had a new album due, Stage Four, the community was ecstatic. Reactions were more measured when it was revealed that the album had a double meaning: it’s the band’s fourth full-length album and also the highest level of cancer, from which frontman Jeremy Bolm’s mother passed in 2014. The gravity that hangs over it could be why Stage Four features contributions by the folk singer Julien Baker, whose ethereal croon is both sublime and devastating. toucheamore.com &'$()

Sunday mornings are best enjoyed outdoors on a park bench with the gentle glow of dawn kissing my skin. Here, heaven happens while I delight in the faint taste of morning dew with each deep inhalation. As my lungs balloon with daybreak’s richness, I cannot help but feel a sense of privacy in the openness; nakedness without judgment; a safe space to simply exist. And like a mouse-deer at ease in her natural habitat, it’s instinctive for my mind to indulge in daydream.

A quick search in the dictionary explained that instincts are inherent behaviours; a fixed action pattern that is innate and unlearned. But I’m sure the human instinct goes beyond involuntary behaviour like blushing, yawning or shivering after you tinkle (in fact, these traits aren’t mutually exclusive to us humans). The instinct is something primal. Something that, on occasion, challenges logic but presents itself as the most sensible comfort to act upon. Like how the leatherback turtle miraculously knows it must make its way to the ocean right after birth is similar to how the average desk monkey knows the appropriate time to ask their boss for paid leave. Evolutionary biologists chalk it up to the four motivations genetically wired in us to satiate the needs of survival: feeding, fighting, fleeing, and fornication. Stumped, I sat pregnant with my thoughts, shifting about on my park bench as I took my time tracing every impetus behind every prosaic decision in my life to see if it would connect itself back to one of these four motivations. True enough, at every conclusion, I was guilty. These primitive survival traits are so freakishly evident in humans of our society, as much as in animals of the wild.
HIT RESET
THE JULIE RUIN (Hardly Art)
Kathleen Hanna can sound so effing irritating. She’s snide and insolent, a fully grown woman trying to pass off as a feminist tween just so she can get your goat. Now supported by her new band that’s equally snappy with their instrument-playing, she makes you just wanna keep Hit(ting) Reset – The Julie Ruin is that good. Hanna (who hailed from Bikini Kill and Le Tigre, only two of the most seminal outfits in riot grrrl punk rock and new wave electro clash music, ever) returns from her Lyme disease affliction, blasting and blitzing on the band’s sophomore. Shouty, punky, trill, squea-irksome, and surprisingly personal, it’s crème de la crème razor-sharp punk showered with bittersweet sprinkles.
But is that all to our instincts? That deep down we just desire to come out ahead? Can we always count on our instincts for that? Then it struck me. A conviction that proves we are more than our fight-or-flight survival mechanisms; that we are beyond animalistic courtship behaviours and the spreading of our genes; that we might actually possess instincts that set our human existence apart from animals. Ironically, since claiming my park bench, I’ve been instinctively exercising them without even acknowledging them. You see, following instinct is almost devoid of choice for animals, but not for us. Somehow, we are given the miraculous ability to not just doubt, but also question, our instincts. This basic ability elevates us to a level of self-actualisation, putting emphasis on the quality of our survival. For if we had the absence of doubt, how could we possibly make the conscious choice to trust? For trusting puts weight on understanding the consequences as much as the prospects of the situation. It tells me that the human instinct no longer simply desires to subsist but, instead, understand the art of existence. It tells me that we are not just built to cope, but built to hope. It tells me that the defining human instinct is to dream. Just as I am, on this park bench. I spring up on my feet as I vow to not use the phrase “trust your instincts” frivolously anymore. For good measure, I put my earphones on, searching through my playlist for a soundtrack to accompany my epiphany and decide upon the lamentations of Manchester Orchestra. The skies could not look anymore limitless as the song ushers my morning out: “Now I hope if there is one thing that we know, From the way that you and I will wander on, And we won’t become a lifeless lope that wanders round and hopes for sorrow”

There’s something adrift in the air of Windy City, Chicago, and we are pretty much hoping it’s change. Jamila Woods is certainly wishing for that with her latest musical contribution (aside from her work as associate artistic director of literary organisation, Young Chicago Authors). The young Chicagoan’s gained some fame with her guest turns on songs by Chance The Rapper and Macklemore, but she positively glows on her own. She’s a fighter, a feminist, a protester for rights and for love, and she does it with equipoise and tender strength. Embodying the earth mother aspect of Erykah Badu and Lauryn Hill, Woods tells a dozen truths; be she be “VRY BLK” or a “Blk Girl Soldier”.

LIL DURK 2X
(Polydor Records) There’s been a real rash of iGenMillennial pop stars – some trussed up to sell (Fake!), others trying their best to be themselves. Shura is trying to make something of herself, and in doing so, speaking for others who feel like her and for her. It’s rare for nuanced feelings, authenticity and popspritziness to meld in synth-pop music, and Shura’s done in it in A+ style. Try on “Touch” and “2Shy” for her realness.
(Columbia Records) Like the cloud rap genre that he made famous, Michael Volpe has been floating in and out as a producer-to-note, better known for supporting A$AP Rocky and The Weeknd than as Clams Casino. He’s now gearing up for pole position in the electro-hop game with his debut. It’s not a ticker-tape victory, but he runs a good lap nevertheless: “Be Somebody”, “Back To You” and “Blast” are his blazes of glory.
(Rise Records) At The Drive-In drummer Tony Hajjar + Mastodon bassist/vocalist Troy Sanders + Queens Of The Stone Age Troy Van Leeuwen + video game scoring composer/ multi-instrumentalist Mike Zarin = heavy rock supergroup. There’s solid riffage in “Violescent”, exhilarant post-metal/progrock in “Starlight”, and even spoken-word babble in “Character” and “Recede and Enter”. A sludgy stew with marrow for all manners of metalheads.
(Def Jam Recordings) Though it’s time for Lil Durk to climb out of the hole that drill music has slotted him in, his latest sends him three steps forward, two steps back. The progress: he’s moved on past professional lows and personal tragedies to buckle down and work on his flow and his range. The regress: the beats sound too samey to impress, especially since his guests (Young Thug and Ty Dolla $ign) are pushing harder.

THE KING OF WHYS
ROMANTIC COMEDIES
(Mikel Rouse) The polyrhythmic structure, the slippery vocals, the helter-skelter scattered beats – Mikel Rouse sure doesn’t make it easy for the casual listener to grasp his indie-synth compositions. Take your time and the beauty and ingenuity emerge: “Habibi Lossless” streams like a calmer Animal Collective epic, with the avant-pop auteur approximating synth-pop on “Ambulance Chaser” and “Moby’s Out Of Water”.
(Wichita Recordings Ltd) Okay, we’re gonna call it: emo-acoustic is the new emo-rock. That is if Mike Kinsella has his way. The latest under his Owen moniker sees the American Football member nudging himself out of his comfort zone (recording out of Chicagoland, with a new producer and backing band) to expand his homey confessionals into lush, melancholic observations. Perfect for quiet trudges/ drives/skates.
(Babe City Records) Foozle sounds like an indie-rock band the world forgot, left in the basement to dawdle in their disaffection about the tedium of being alive. Lucky for them, there are people bothered to listen. Otherwise, we would not have been blessed with the deadening “TV Wrestling” and the diary-listing proceedings of “Nice Day”. Such is the lazy genius of the trio’s slacker college (dropout) rock.

Michael Kiwanuka
(Polydor Ltd.) “Cold Little Heart” opens as a 10-minute orchestral introduction to the inner world of Michael Kiwanuka, his gravelly voice adding soul to the oomph provided by a choir and an electric guitar and producers, Danger Mouse and Paul Butler. Kiwanuka may lay bare his heart, but his distinguishing croon’s now ballasted to grander productions. Indeed, ’tis a gamble for love or hate.
Descendents
(Epitaph.) Gotta love a bunch of 50-year-old men singing goofy punk songs about diets, machoness and other outsider-youth universalities. From a slightly grownup perspective, of course. It’s the first Descendents record after a 12-year hiatus (so that frontman Milo Aukerman can teach biology proper. Really.) and the band retains its irreverent but pointed humour. It’s like Green Day, but wayyy fun!

Brendan Canning
(Draper Street Records) Missing Broken Social Scene (while awaiting their new album soon to come)? You can’t have a better make-do than the group’s co-founding member, Brendan Canning’s latest solo release. While it doesn’t have the bluster and verve of a typical BSS album, it makes up with summer sunshine-basted listenability. “Keystone Dealers” and “Hey Marika, Get Born” will get you coasting along in a jiffy.
OPERATOR MSTRKRFT
(Last Gang Records Inc.) Don’t know if retreads and nostalgia are a good thing, but MSTRKRFT’s latest drop sounds like an album that came 10 years too early on the music (re)cycle to even qualify as retroflavoured trendy. The house-technopunk mess just comes across dated, as though the duo mistook ’90s dance music to just be loud and aggro. The metal-techno closer, “Go On Without Me” is a kicker, though.

Inarguably one of Singapore’s most exciting talents, Kevin Lester AKA THELIONCITYBOY (TLCB), is absolutely killin’ it right now. Barely a month ago, he released his new album, Paradise, which – besides being his most honest and uncompromising showing yet – also features exquisitely thudding and emotive beats from producer, FlightSch. Coming after his 2014 offering, Put Your City On, Paradise sees TLCB swap out hip-hop braggadocio for penetrating reflection and emotional insight. His main goal here is to affirm his place in the Singaporean consciousness and to connect with Singaporeans through the power and dynamism of his music. Throughout the album, he flexes his lyrical muscle like never before. Peep songs like “HRLY (Harry Lee)” and “Paradise” and see the pictures he paints with words. But he also goes harder than he ever has: cue “New Bounce” and “Start Already / One Seven” for floor-shaking trap thrills.

In their bio, this local rap trio describes itself as such: “Three dudes who met in polytechnic, omarKENOBI, mickeyLEANO and daniKIDDO realised they could rhyme words together on tempo and went on to form Mediocre Haircut Crew – a testament to their sh*tty hairdos”. Obviously, they’re underselling themselves – and doing so with a tongue-in-cheek verve. Since erupting on the scene a year ago with menacing single, “Suburbia”, they’ve established themselves as exceptionally charismatic lyricists with a sound barrier-breaking spitfire flow. Exhuming and updating Golden Age ’90s boom bap with a modern sensibility that’s as psychedelic as it is juddering, the lads released The MHC EP and added to our national treasure trove of music. There’s a reason this band has been hailed by many as “Malaysia’s best kept indie secret”. They make utterly fascinating music and they’re about to blow up in a big way. Very often, guitar-heavy rock music tends to veer towards being formulaic, or worse, knuckle-draggingly aggressive and hollow. This is not the case with the Kuala Lumpur quartet. Ali Johan, Rafique Mokhtar, Smek Almohdzar, and Zamir Alif harness the intensity of punk, hardcore and screamo but instead of aimlessly bludgeoning the listener, use their mythic sound as a canvas through which to communicate deeply poignant and personal revelations. On their 2014 album, Book Of Flags, the band exhibited their gifts impeccably, balancing pummelling riffs with effervescent textures throughout. And when it comes to playing live, these guys can be counted on to deliver a breathtaking show. Having opened for Battles, the Dillinger Escape Plan, Envy, and toe, they’ll know how to treat you once they come on.

You can tell from the sheer number of local and international musicians who lace up in Vans that it’s inextricably linked to the world of music. This is something that’s affirmed by the brand’s own 'Musicians Wanted' initiative. Building on the success of the APAC 'Musicians Wanted' initiative in 2015, Vans is giving local undiscovered talent the opportunity to rock out on stage with the big names during the Singapore leg of the House Of Vans tour. Without any discrimination of genre, bands of any skill level are able to submit their profile and selected works. After which, there’ll be a total of three bands selected for the Vans 'Musicians Wanted' Finals, where they will battle it out against each other for the prize to play on the House Of Vans Main Stage. This will surely unearth some fine local talent of a particularly next-level shade. Stay tuned, for the future is bright.

What’s a House Of Vans festival without a bit of skate time? Keeping the connection to the brand’s roots in the sport of skateboarding, HOV visitors are invited to immerse themselves in the photography exhibition by Waxfeather. Started by local skateboarder and skate photographer, Taufek Asmarak, Waxfeather was born in 2013 as a non-profit skateboard publication to document the sport through an unfiltered lens, and to give permanence to these photos through the medium of print; as opposed to the short lifespan that the digital world offers. By sticking to the dying art of film photography, Waxfeather began to grow in its reach across the international skateboarding community, allowing for contributions from all over the globe. In creating a borderless connection between skateboarders to form a tightknit circle of adventurous individuals, Waxfeather is commemorating its fifth release with an official launch and photo exhibition at House Of Vans. Expect works
from skateboarders like Dominic Palarchio and Shingo Goya, as they strive to tell visually captivating stories. By encouraging skateboarders to share and synthesise creative perspectives, they hope to shed more light into the world of skateboarding and the grit behind the grind. For those eager to flaunt their skills, a custom-made street course will play host to the contest, where contestants take to the ramps to prove their mettle. Riding on a course that is specially designed to incorporate local elements, riders will go head to head with each other as they display their chops in hopes to bag some cold hard cash or some of Vans’ latest products. Come dusk, the course will see skate teams from Singapore and Malaysia put up individual showcase demos for eager audiences.

We’re sure some of you have had that moment where you looked at your skate deck and wished you could customise it with artwork of your choice. With this workshop, you’ll be one step closer. Led by Su of Nocturnal Society skateboards, the session will provide you with the coaching you need on how to silkscreen your decks with customised artwork. You’ll be given a deck to try your newly learnt techniques on, which you can take home after as a souvenir from the class. On top of that, you can also try your hand at silkscreening tees and cloth tote bags, all of which will be yours to keep.
Speaking of tote bags, stop by the Textiles Workshop station and walk away with your own Japanese patchwork sac. Led by Fahmy Ishak, learn the steps of creating simple, everyday items using the handmade process of patchwork sewing. Founded in 2012 by Ishak, Finicky In Nature – or FIN, for short – is known for its hand-stitched boro, which refers to patched or mended textiles, on a product range that spans from denim jeans to scarves and accessories. Ishak and his team also work with fabrics with Japanese motifs or vintage selvedge denim.
For those who want to really get your hands dirty while you pick up mad skills in sneaker customisation, learn from the maestros of the sneaker DIY scene and pick up first-hand tips on how to create one of a kind sneakers. Run by SBTG, the workshop promises to empower you with in-depth knowledge and processes to use when you are putting ink to leather. Beyond learning how to pimp out your kicks, your newfound artistic skills will serve you further than just sneakers too.
Rather than taking your crayons to the canvas, you can express that creative energy with your own pair of Sk8Hi shoes. Run by the local creative collective, Tell Your Children, you’ll be provided with a set of colouring tools and a Sk8-Hi stencil. Whether you’re looking to clash a myriad of patterns together or want to bring your doodles to life, your unique canvas awaits the imaginative outpouring. Then, watch your 2-D drawing get a 3-D twist, and see how your dream shoe design holds up against the explosion of artistry from fellow attendees.

“Going green” has been the buzz phrase for a while now, and at HOV, you can do exactly that. Instead of stashing your old skate deck in the store room, why not turn it into something functional so it can once again be a part of your everyday? Instructor KAI will show you how. Watch and learn as he gives old boards a second lease of life by turning them into stools. It might sound a little daunting, but this workshop will provide you with all the necessary tools and know-how. All you need to bring is an old skate deck.

While the world constantly craves the new, Fahmy Ishak and his collective, Finicky In Nature (FIN), seek to uncover the beauty in age. This translates to everyday items that feature the Japanese art form, boro – where old fabrics and materials are rehashed into new items through the patchwork process. It’s an urban jungle out there, so you best suit up for it. Delivering a Fall/Winter 2016 collection of ’70s inspired looks, Jinwon Woo’s label, Rocket x Lunch, takes on crawling cityscapes with confident streetwear – resulting in a wardrobe of reimagined classics to push the designs forward. Such is seen in the exaggerated tailoring of classic men’s trousers, oversized knits, and jackets cut with extra room around the chest. For that finishing touch of drama, growling gorillas and chubby shearling coats will serve those who live in the cooler regions well, while leather and softly draped velvet surfaces complete the lineup with a wild sense of sumptuousness.

STICKY PAWS
Ever had one of those moments where you see someone else wearing something you really wanted and you wished you could walk up and ‘Columbus’ it? Lindsay Lohan did just that. In 2008, Lilo saw a fellow clubber’s US$11,000 mink fur coat in the storage area and decided that it would look better on her. So, she appropriated said coat from the rack and wore it as her own. The rightful owner soon launched a lawsuit against the troubled star in a bid to get her coat back. When Lohan returned it, it had several tears, stains, and reeked of cigarette smoke, making it virtually unwearable.
EVEN AS THE REST OF THE WORLD TAKES A HARSH STANCE AGAINST THE USE OF REAL FUR FOR OUR AESTHETIC APPRECIATION, THE FASHION WORLD SEEMS CONTENT TO LIVE IN ITS OWN BUBBLE. HERE ARE SEVEN OF THE FURRIEST SCANDALS – FROM THE EMBARRASSINGLY HILARIOUS TO THE DOWNRIGHT DESPICABLE.
()*
FUR REAL?
While harvesting animal hide is cruel, the idea that you would allow unsuspecting shoppers to partake in the barbaric practice is something that would be unfathomable to most. Yet, British high street retailers, ASOS and TK Maxx, were caught red-handed selling real fur under the guise that it was man-made material. An investigation by the Humane Society International in the U.K. revealed that items with fur trims, gloves and hats all contained a sizeable percentage of real fur DNA. Naturally, the brands had their PR teams spring into action, each releasing a statement claiming accidental responsibility, and that the fault was with their suppliers instead.
THE DEVIL WEARS TOFU
As one of the leading voices in the global fashion arena, legendary editor Anna Wintour would like you to try and forget that in 2005, she was attacked by PETA activists who were enraged by her penchant for featuring fur in her magazine. Wintour, who famously said “There’s always a way to wear fur”, was hit in the face by a tofu tart (vegan, no doubt) while en route to a show at Paris Fashion Week. According to PETA’s vice president, Dan Mathews, the lash-out was in retaliation to the fact that Wintour refused to run PETA’s anti-fur ads, despite the animal rights group offering to pay the same advertising fee.

MAMA KNOWS BEST (NOT)
If you thought shopping for a baby is expensive, you haven’t seen how the West-Kardashian family does it. Known for feeding the tabloids with her dramatic publicity stunts for a swift click, Kim K dressed her then-year-old daughter in a fox fur coat that was estimated to have cost around US$3,500. The cost is one thing but to put a child, who doesn’t know any better, in a coat that cost a bunch of poor foxes their precious hides is less than tasteful. We get that winter in New York gets frigid, but we’d like to think that even in sub-zero temperatures, our morals don’t freeze over as well.
#FIRSTWOOLPROBLEMS
It’s unthinkable that anyone would want to hurt these little critters, but in China’s angora farms – the world’s top exporter for angora wool – ruthless businessmen would stop at nothing to make a buck. After all, angora wool is highly sought-after due to its soft texture, and only available from the Angora rabbit. Exposed by PETA Asia in a viral video, factory workers were seen violently yanking the fur off of screaming rabbits. Most rabbits die within a year or two and those who survive are then killed and sold for meat. Thanks to this expose, big-name brands like Topshop and Mango have vouched to stop using angora wool in their lines.

SAY WHAT NOW
Kanye West is known for a few things – releasing streetwear that literally breaks the Internet and your bank account, abstract performances, and infamous all-caps rants on his blog. And it’s in one of these posts that the rapper defends his right to wear fur – saying that it’s acceptable for rock stars to wear fur. After being flamed for wearing fur at Men’s Fashion Week, West went on the record to say that he was saddened by the negativity, and then proceeded to remind people that he’s a rock star and that everyone else is a prude. We’re going to let you finish, but in our opinion, that excuse is pretty weak.
HIT THE ROADNG
The world is a weird and wonderful place, where roadkill can now be considered a chic alternative to harvested fur. Launching her brand amidst a wave of controversy, Pam Paquin wanted to challenge consumer mindsets by offering them a second option to the cruel practices of fur. Instead of sourcing her hides from fur farms, Paquin’s materials come from roadkill. At Petite Mort Fur, shoppers can select from a wide range of clothing and accessory options – from scarves to the odd fur bikini. Still, activists are not wholly convinced by her business, as they fear that her business is only prolonging the very industry they’ve dedicated time to defeating.

ONE PEOPLE As part of the new guard of designers looking to shake up the stuffy legacy of fashion, Rio Uribe of Gypsy Sport returns to form with a season that is as strong in aesthetic as it is grounded in a politically affirming stance. Being new to the industry gives one a refreshed take on things, and as an outlying group of street designers – like Gosha Rubchinskiy and Off-White – continue to charm the elites of the fashion world, Uribe seems poised to join their ranks.
On the clothing front, Uribe keeps to a democratic formula. A denim shirt dress, a draped bustier top, hoodies and jersey melange skirts – these were all pieces easily adoptable. Contrasting these closet essentials are pieces with an avant garde touch – oversized corduroy jackets that look like they’d been nicked from a thrift store, and a patchworked gilet with shearling paired with a nose-grazing muffler. Elsewhere, flared lace pants and shaggy fringed tops provide movement, allowing them to take on a new life when worn. But let’s go back to the idea of belonging. More than anything, Uribe’s collection feels like a politically charged statement that inclusiveness is in. He purposely ignores gender types in a time when gender-related issues are getting tenser, as if to say that one should dress as they please. And as fashion continues to grapple with the issue of racial diversity, Uribe’s presentation made sure to include models of every colour – even a freckled male model and an albino African-American mother with her infant. It’s in this paradox – where despite belonging to different ‘tribes’, we are all one and the same – that Uribe leaves us with something that is more than just fashion.

Uribe doesn’t design clothing that is segregated by genders. Rather, he has positioned himself as a designer of unisex clothing. This season, the story centres around the idea of belonging – whether in a group or tribe, or to the world in general. Tribes are a prevalent concept in fashion, so to speak, but with Gypsy Sport, Uribe tends to take it in a more visual direction. At his showcase earlier this year, Uribe set his show in a way that the looks would change drastically in sets of four. The first group of four models wore white, the second wore stripes, so on and so forth. Each model also wore variations of his tribal accessories, be it in the form of earrings, nose rings, or necklaces that resembled crop circles.

ADULT CONTENT In the orgy of today’s image-making circles, Nobuyoshi Araki dominates the pack when it comes to the practice of producing erotic imagery. Photographing everyone from sex workers to Lady Gaga knotted up bondagestyle in his famous ropes, his images have spurned admiration and admonishment from just about any and everyone. While Araki has been widely welcomed by the fashion industry for his art that explores the energy of sex, bodies and human nature, it falls onto Masanori Morikawa to channel Araki’s grand legacy, with a collaborative effort for Christian Dada’s Fall/Winter 2016 collection. Titled ‘Love On The Left Eye’, the legendary photographer looked closer to home for inspiration when asked to develop prints for the collection. The story goes that in 2013, Araki was told he had an obstruction in his right eye, and was left largely unable to see through it. Drawing from this idea, he created three prints that would contribute to Morikawa’s designs, each blacked out on the right with a marker as a reflection of his own left-sided vision. The season is focused around two main silhouettes in constant contrast with each other. On one hand, Morikawa uses exaggerated shapes and roomy cuts to overwhelm his wearer in a flurry of fabric, while playing up the contrasts by incorporating tailored fits.
This melding of such opposites in the same look underscores the same tension viewers feel when they behold an Araki image. That’s not to say that the collection is isolating to customers. In fact, if you take time to deconstruct each look, Morikawa’s pieces are highly wearable. Trench coats and biker jackets are given a delicate finish as floral bouquets are embroidered onto hard wool and leather surfaces. Oversized hoodies that feature Araki’s photographs, ripped jeans, and classic denim jackets with cut-off hems will find fans even in those who prefer a safer look.
Text Aaron Kok Images Images!Christian Christian Dada
The unmistakable perversion of Araki’s career is also picked up by Morikawa, as seen in the designer’s use of leather, bondage elements and a stellar approach to designing the accessories that complement the collection. Leather gets spliced up into skinny trousers and oversized biker jackets, while white cut-off trousers are given an obsessive dosage of buckles and straps – a bondage-inspired look. In homage to Araki’s work, rope belts are blown up into gargantuan knots, as obi-like belts nod to the pair’s shared Japanese backgrounds. All in all, it’s a dedicated effort to exploring the perverse, without the need of resorting to dusty “sex sells” tricks.

The moment I realised that I wanted to do this was when I identified that the need to grow the industry had to be a consciously active decision. I was excited by the challenge of taking the risks for the ultimate cause. What were the major lessons you’ve learnt along the way? Lesson one: Know what you want. It’s the hardest thing, honestly. It takes quite a bit of fumbling around till you can differentiate what you want and need in life. Lesson two: Once you know what you want, learn how to ask for it. What does it mean to ‘be the change’? It’s about breaking the wheel and reinventing it.

What does ‘being the change’ mean to you? To follow your path or calling rather than following the crowd. Ask yourself what your vision is rather than depend on others to carve it out for you. Just under a year ago, we launched The Golden Duck, a heritage snacks company, and it’s taken off spectacularly. When did you decide you wanted to lead your own business? One thing led to another and I found myself running my first business, a lifestyle-marketing agency named Elevate, the company responsible for where I am today. What were the major lessons you’ve learnt along the way? Chris: There's no substitute for hard work. The only way to really make a difference is to step up and bring your A-game – every single day. Define what it means to ‘be the change’. C: All of us have some discomfort within society, be it in ours or globally. Find a solution. Don't just talk the talk – get up and do it yourself. That's real change. What’s on your American Eagle Outfitters shopping list? J: I'm a sucker for outerwear and how it lifts an outfit when paired right. Throw some my way!

EVERYDAY EASE ASPIRING TO DRESS THE GO-GETTING WOMEN OF TODAY, D.D COLLECTIVE – LED BY DESIGNER DEBBIE CHUNG – TEMPERS ITS ARTISTIC AND QUIRKY REFERENCES WITH HIGHLY WEARABLE APPAREL THAT PUTS COMFORT FIRST. ON THE TAIL OF ITS INAUGURAL LAUNCH AT ROBINSONS, WE SPEAK TO THE ASIAN LABEL’S HEAD HONCHO TO FIND OUT WHAT GOES ON BEHIND THE SCENES.
Summarise the brand in three words. Approachable, classic and eclectic.
,-.
Who is the d.d Collective woman and how does she influence your design process? We design for the everyday woman who works hard. She knows the power and comfort that a good ensemble offers, and works the pieces in her own way. In general, the idea of her as a strong spirit is already integrated into the design process, which makes the design flow naturally.
Let’s talk about the Fall/Winter 2016 collection. How did you parlay Delaney Allen’s work into your designs? We were exploring his study of textures and the contrast of odd colours and surfaces. We implemented that idea into our fabrication with asymmetrical cuts. These are not subtle details, but they still pay homage to his discretion as an artist.
The selection of fabrics this season is what stands out in the collection. How did you go about that? The fabrics balance a very luxe hand, yet remain lightweight at the same time. But in keeping to the brand’s DNA, we wanted to make sure everything we worked with was comfortable, and that every piece was made as an easy slip-on.
Take us through the process of developing the prints. This season, we started off by finding interesting elements in Allen’s work and began exploring how we could turn that into something wearable. The challenge comes in the form of print placement and colour coding, but the solution has always been to constantly re-sample our designs until we get it right.
Which is your favourite look from the collection? Definitely the Utopia Lace Trim Top and Utopia Lace Skirt. It’s an asymmetrical top and skirt, both printed in brush strokes and underlined with guipure lace (pictured below).

Hi Debbie, what does “d.d Collective” stand for? The brand name alludes to a congregation of creative minds from different fields in fashion, coming together to explore the idea of everyday clothing in reworked silhouettes and technical fabrication to push the limit of basics.

BENSIMON X INES DE LA FRESSANGE
CAROLL LYNN
Casual weekend brunches call for comfortable footwear to go with the off-duty look, and we’ve found just the pair for you. Bensimon, the iconic French lifestyle brand, is teaming up with Ines de la Fressange to produce a limited run of tennis shoes. Decked out in the colours of the French flag, the perennially chic muse of Yves Saint Laurent has chosen to keep her designs simple and easy to pair. Featuring a slightly retro design, these pedders are made from machine-washable canvas so you don’t have to worry about getting them a bit dirty during your adventures.
As part of its revolving stable of collaborations, PUMA has chosen Dutch illustrator, Caroll Lynn, to lend its new line of women’s apparel and sneakers her hyperromantic approach to art. Besides her illustrations that marry manic lines with explosive colours, Lynn’s Instagram feed (@careaux) also boasts a veritable collection of kicks that would put most to shame. We kick back with Lynn to talk shop.
$89, available at ruemadame.com.
Firstly, congrats on the collaboration with Puma. Thank you! My biggest dream was to collaborate with PUMA, so when the team approached me, I said yes immediately. It is still hard to believe that my dream came true. How did you get into illustrating? I’ve always been into illustration but never as passionate as I am now. It all started when I had to find a way out of reality; I just put my music on and start working. After an hour, I forget my problems and I’m calm again. Share your inspiration behind the collection. The collection is created based on the five most important people in my life. I wanted to include my rose print, the ‘Dedication Flower’ in all the designs, as well as pink and pastels because those are my favourite colours. I actually used to wear black all the time and I prefer gold jewellery, so I incorporated a bit of those two colours as well. What challenges did you face in the design process? The two challenges I had were with the materials, and trying to work out how I wanted certain things. After reviewing the initial samples, I could tell that I had to focus on details more. Lastly, seeing that you’re a self-professed Pokemon fan, are you Team Valor, Mystic or Instinct? Mystic! Say no more!

The arrival of Lazy Oaf Fall 2016 brings with it a collection inspired by the death of romance. By parodying the usual tropes associated with romance and courtship, the lineup takes on tacky tokens and misplaced affection with a signature brand of wit and humour. In the women’s line, saccharine silhouettes such as babydoll dresses and oversized jumpers are laced with teddy bears, heart motifs, frills, and ribbons. The men’s collection follows up on the idea that chivalry is dead, thanks to lazy boyfriends. Hence, look forward to rugby jerseys and comfy hoodies that are perfect for lazing around the house. As the beauty palette segues into the deep end with the turn of seasons, we’re looking to one big trend that’s been on everyone’s lips, literally – rouge noir puckers. Equal parts grunge and goth, the moody hue’s got style meisters everywhere thirsty for blood ever since it dominated the Fall runways. To work the pout into your everyday, keep the drama on the lips and the rest of the face clean. Blackened bordeaux, ombre merlot or vampy berry – a matte finish harks back to the ’90s, while a coat of lacquer will elevate the ’do for a dash of modern-day fierce.

WHEN IT COMES TO GROOMING AND SKINCARE, EFFICIENCY AND EFFICACY ARE NON-NEGOTIABLES. AND WITH DEMANDS ONLY EVER INCREASING, IT’S SHAPE UP OR SHIP OUT IN THE FIGHT TO WINNING THE HEARTS OF SAVVY CONSUMERS. HERE, OUR LATEST BEAUTY FINDS THAT ARE GENUINELY WORTH THE TIME.
AESOP LUCENT FACIAL CONCENTRATE
YSL TOUCHE ÉCLAT LE TEINT
()(
Ahhh…Touche Éclat. The long-standing fan favourite that’s indispensable to any beauty junkie worth her salt. In fact, some love the formula so much, they do more than apply the highlighter to the eyes and high planes of the face. Yes, they use it all over to brighten overall complexion. Except, the pen runs out really quickly that way. If you’re one of the said fans, consider this latest release a beauty dream come true. Boasting the same radiance-boosting properties, the Touche Éclat Le Teint is a foundation that imparts a fresher face by hiding flaws and signs of fatigue effectively. By staying put for up to eight hours, the weightless formula provides seamless coverage continuously, while combating free radicals at the same time. It contains ruscus extract, which helps to stimulate micro-circulation within skin’s structure, to reverse dullness and enhance luminosity. If you thought nothing beats YSL’s “eight hours of sleep in a pen”, get acquainted with this “eight hours of sleep in a drop” sensation. $79 (30ml), available at YSL Beauté.
With a potent blend of antioxidants, vitamins C and B3, and oils of rose otto, sandalwood and frankincense, Lucent nourishes and shields skin from urban pollution. Two ways it’s perfect for us: its lightweight texture absorbs quickly and leaves a matte finish. This means we get the same intense hydration and protection like that of heavy formulas at twice the speed, and can layer on other skincare or makeup without having to wait in between. As a hardworking multitasker, it is also a great booster to existing skincare routines. Get more from your Aesop favourites by adding one full pipette of Lucent to the mix. Congested skin will find help in the concoction paired with two drops of Fabulous Face Oil. Get a boost in hydration with the Blue Chamomile Facial Hydrating Masque (six pumps), or increase skin’s nourishment with the Damascan Rose Facial Treatment (two drops). To enhance skin’s antioxidant protection, add two drops of Parsley Seed Anti-Oxidant Facial Treatment. $145 (60ml), available at Aesop.
COVER FX One of the latest additions to the Sephora family, Cover FX’s raison d’être is flawless skin. Its catalogue boasts over 40 shades of foundation as well as a wide range of primers, concealers, powders, and bronzers. But its edge lies in its customisable formulas, which help tailor products to individual precision. For example, Custom Cover Drops allows you to turn any liquid serum, oil, moisturiser, or primer into a foundation with your desired level of coverage. Its pigments are coated with lecithin, which mimics skin’s texture for a seamless finish. To kill the shine off a facial product, layer on the Custom Blot Drops and skin will be transformed to a matte finish. It also helps to soften the appearance of lines and pores, while diffusing light for a smoother look. Lastly, for a healthy glow, the Custom Enhancer Drops adds a bronzing or highlighting effect to any liquid skincare or makeup product. Infused with a high concentration of pearls, it delivers a lit-from-within appearance that is naturally luminous. POA, available at Sephora and coverfx.com.

DYSON SUPERSONIC Hairdryers are a necessity of life but the time-consuming nature of hairdrying and accompanying arm ache are often enough to put us off the idea completely. This is where Dyson comes to the rescue. Already a household name – thanks to its marvelous bladeless fans and mean vacuum cleaners – Dyson is moving into the beauty arena with its latest invention, the Supersonic hairdryer. First of all, the sleek, lightweight design will have you at first sight. With three nozzles that attach magnetically, you can choose to dispense heat evenly with the Diffuser – great for curls or generic drying; enjoy a wider drying radius with the Smoothing nozzle – which dries and styles simultaneously; or achieve definition with the Styling concentrator. Operation is straightforward, with four heat settings – from constant cold at 28 deg C to fast-drying at 100 deg C – and three speed settings to choose from. Whether it’s a quick blowdry or precise styling sesh, the nifty Supersonic delivers. By maintaining a constant, controlled airflow, it easily cuts grooming time by half. Its ability to control temperatures and prevent over-heating – keeping surfaces cool to the touch – also ensures your precious strands (and hands) are not abused in the process. Plus, the agony your eardrums endure during a typical blowout will now be a thing of the past. Thanks to the digital V9 motor, which spins up to 110,000 times a minute at an inaudible frequency, the Supersonic is a lot quieter than its traditional counterparts. Add to that an ergonomic design that allows for better manoeuvring and you have an intelligent tool that is poised to become your new daily essential. $599, available at leading departmental and electronic stores.

GHD BRUSH COLLECTION With a trusty hairdryer in hand, the only other thing you need is a good set of blow dry brushes to achieve your desired style with little effort. Enter these handsome helpers by ghd. Developed and tested by a team of hairstyling specialists, the brushes feature non-slip finishing and platinum toned end caps, and come in different sizes to suit various hair lengths and styling needs. Besides allowing greater flexibility and efficiency when achieving looks, they also ensure better control – especially when working with wet hair.

The star of the collection is the Ceramic Vented Radial Brush series. Also known as the quintessential blow dry brush, its round shape makes it perfect for creating lift and volume, and allowing movement. The hollow vented ceramic barrel facilitates better air flow, and retains heat for a faster blow dry. The range is also available in three sizes to cater to the type of waves you want to achieve. For sleek, straight tresses, look to the Paddle Brush, which detangles as it goes along. It features a broad flat base that catches a larger section of hair, so your mane gets dry faster. By keeping the hairdryer nozzle close to the brush as you work through the sections, it swiftly creates a head of silky smooth locks. If you need a little more control, try the Natural Bristle Radial Brush. It comes in two sizes, with natural bristles for precise manipulation. Rounding up the collection is the Oval Dressing Brush made with natural bristles. Perfect for conditioning and polishing any look, it is the everyday musthave when it comes to classic grooming. From $30 to $50, available at Sephora.

STYLE FIEND Hey Nick! What would you recommend from the Kiehl’s catalogue? Some of my favorite Kiehl’s products are the Facial Fuel Eye De-Puffer, because it reduces puffiness immediately and camouflages any traces of fatigue; the Facial Fuel Energising Scrub, great in the morning or even after a flight when you want to shake-off a long journey; and the Ultra-Light Daily UV Defense, which is my favorite sunscreen because of its lightweight and matte texture.
NO STRANGER TO THE CIRCLE OF MEN’S FASHION, ATLARGE MAGAZINE’S STYLE EDITOR NICK WOOSTER HAS A LONG LIST OF BRANDS TO WHICH HE’S LENT HIS NAME – INCLUDING BARNEYS, PRINGLE OF SCOTLAND AND TIFFANY & CO. LATEST ON THAT SCROLL IS KIEHL’S, FEATURING THE NEWLY LAUNCHED AGE DEFENDER COLLECTION. DISPENSING SAGE STYLE AND GROOMING ADVICE THROUGH THREE COLLABORATIVE VIDEOS, WOOSTER SHARES PRACTICAL TIPS FOR EFFICIENT MORNING ROUTINES, CLEVER TRIP PACKING, AND WHAT TO EXPECT IN A BARBER’S CHAIR. WE CATCH UP WITH THE MAN FOR A QUICK CHAT.
The Kiehl’s Age Defender Collection – including the Serum ($75, 75ml), Moisturiser ($68, 75ml), and Eye Cream ($55, 14ml) – is available at Kiehl’s.
What’s the most important thing to you when choosing a skincare product? Generally speaking, I want clarity, transparency and, most importantly, simplicity. I look for what is easy to use – nothing fussy – and products that provide the essentials I need to look puttogether. I also appreciate authenticity. Kiehl’s has a 60-year history in the grooming category that gives it an expertise I appreciate and trust. So what’s your morning skincare routine? I typically wash my face in the shower to save time. Afterwards, I apply a serum, eye cream and moisturiser. I’ll then layer on an SPF and make sure I have lip balm on me before heading out the door. What’s your secret against ageing? I don’t obsess about ageing, but I’m certainly more aware of what will slow down or accelerate the hands of time now than I was in my 20s. Regardless of age, my number one piece of antiageing advice is to start using SPF. Men – especially younger men – are often unaware of its impact, but it’s important to know that no matter how long you spend outdoors in a day, if you don’t use SPF, then all of the other energy we put towards our appearance is a virtual waste of time. Any special routine for the beard? Men don’t realise that having a beard is a lot more work than a clean shave. When I started growing a beard, I noticed the skin underneath would get dry and irritated. Beard oils are great for this, as they keep the hair healthy and skin

underneath soothed. Kiehl’s recently introduced a Beard Grooming Oil which I highly recommend because it’s very lightweight and has a woodsy aromatic quality that isn’t overwhelming. What are your style and beauty essentials when you travel? It all depends on the length of the journey. For red-eye flights, I like to wear sweat pants, but it’s important to have a jacket or a beautiful overcoat on top, so I don’t look like I’m wearing sweats. My ideal in-flight sleeping look is a black cashmere cardigan, black crew neck T-shirt, black sweats, and Church’s brogues. As for grooming, I tend to use more products when I travel than I do at home because in-flight conditions and jetlag can be so taxing on the skin. I never travel without Facial Fuel Eye De-Puffer – it works fast to cut down on puffiness, dark circles and dryness around the eyes. I also always keep a lip balm on me. Not only to hydrate my lips but also my cuticles – I apply it to them to keep them from drying out on the plane. You started working in the New York fashion industry 30 years ago. How has it changed? First of all, when I started as a buyer, there were no computers. Then came the Internet, and, finally, social media. Each of these has had a cataclysmic impact on the fashion business. That’s what makes life so exciting. Each decade seemed to be so great, so new at the time (in hindsight, the ’80s really were), but each season, we are always seeking the same thing: to be seduced. When did you find your personal style? I don’t know that I ever have. I believe style and taste are an ever-expanding and always-evolving motion. If I stop growing or learning, I am finished. I always say that everything I know today is because of my time at Barneys New York in the late ’80s. I learned from my predecessor, Peter Rizzo, who learned from Fred Pressman. That was an education you couldn’t buy.

!"#$%&'#($)(*) BART JANSEN
Like tattoos, there’s a commemorative aspect to taxidermy that has led many to memorialise their dearly departed pets. But Dutch artist, Bart Jansen, wasn’t content to merely have a static reminder of his late cat, Orville. In 2012, the full-time solar panel installer and aviation enthusiast – he named his cat after one of the Wright brothers – hit upon a novel alternative after Orville’s passing: give it the taxidermy treatment and turn it into a drone. While the cat-as-helicopter concept might strike some as outlandish, it’s inspired Jansen to other feats, namely, a badger submarine and a one-person aircraft in the shape of a large animal.
SARINA BREWER
Mythology is rife in creatures of unconventional proportions and appendages – the perfect source of inspiration for taxidermists with a reconstitutive bent. Sarina Brewer is an artist and naturalist who counts herself as one of the inspired. Tapping into her acute interest in biology, she creates hyper-detailed pieces that seem to hark back to some ancient fairy tale. This particular one, ‘Capricorn’, takes its cues from the astrological sign and is composed of the head and upper body of a mountain goat, and the lower body and tail of a fish. What look like pigeon wings are artistic liberties taken by her.

B I S C H O F F ’ S TA X I D E R M Y & ANIMAL FX
The average person’s access to taxidermy is, for the most part, limited. More often than not, it’s in movies that most people get to see an ‘artified’ dead animal. It’s for this express purpose that this Los Angeles enterprise exists. Providing props and animal stunt doubles for Hollywood offerings has been this firm’s mission from day one, and it’s never failed to deliver. The crow perpetually perched on Johnny Depp’s head in The Lone Ranger is their handiwork, as are the animals in the following music videos: Katy Perry’s “Roar”, Rilo Kiley’s “Portion Of Foxes” and Queens Of The Stone Age’s “The Vampyre Of Time And Memory”.
P O L LY MORGAN
The fantastical, utterly surreal creations by this London-based artist belie the fact that she never planned on making a career out of decorating animal carcasses. After graduating from Queen Mary University Of London, with a degree in English literature, Morgan planned on becoming an actress before a change of heart took over. Clearly, all was not lost. So gifted is she that even her earliest pieces caught the attention of one Banksy. Over the years, her aesthetic has only gotten more stylish and sophisticated and this work, titled, ‘Harbour’, is reflective of her knack for melding together very unseemly elements.

TAXIDERMY IS SAFE WHEN IT’S THE PREROGATIVE OF HOBBYISTS AND FISHERMEN, UNTIL IT PIQUES THE INTERESTS OF ARTISTS – OR SICKOS, DEPENDING ON HOW SQUEAMISH YOU GET – WHO PUSH THE MEDIUM TO THE EXTREMES. HERE ARE EIGHT OUTRAGEOUS EXAMPLES.
K AT E CLARK
IRIS SCHIEFERSTEIN
This illustrious German artist has dedicated her art to, in her words, “giving a new face to death”. The idea of repurposing death is certainly a supremely polarising one and in Schieferstein’s work, it’s reflected in how her treatment manifests. Look at these Gun Hoof Shoes, as they are called. Would you wear them, let alone part with US$5,000 for a pair? Know who gladly did? Lady Gaga. But the rest of us not so meat dress-inclined are in the majority. Deeming her work gruesome, the German government has tried to imprison her for years; and Gaga might be the only force standing in its way.
Whether we care to acknowledge it or not, as humans, our relationship with animals is predicated on our superiority to them – we think of ourselves as the most evolved and civilised of the spectrum. But one of art’s fundamental concerns is frustrating boundaries and in the field of taxidermy, this Brooklyn artist is one of the best at it. In her hands, recycled animal hides sculpted with human faces become the canvas through which species categories are interrogated and, ultimately, broken down. How you perceive something is a good indication of how you’ll treat it. How, then, will you regard an anthropomorphic zebra?
SCOTT BIBUS
Text Indran P Images Various Sources
Scott Bibus is to taxidermy what Andy Warhol is to pop art. Both luminaries are towering presences in their disparate fields because of their patently outstanding and extreme approaches to form and execution – and Bibus is synonymous with extremes. Even his fundamental premise, that animal art need not always be reverent and soulful, is bold. Hence, his capital-G grotesque take on it all. This one’s just titled ‘Zombie Cat’ and it depicts said feline in a gruesome undead form. Besides bringing a heavy dose of the unnatural to the natural world, Bibus’ work underscores that nature can be unforgivingly savage.
*#+,-#$"
LISA BLACK
As it has been with scores of artists in different mediums, it’s the same with this Kiwi sculptor: one thing led to another. Inspired by dreams and her reflections on the place of technology in our world, Black began sculpting as hobby. Before long, she was increasingly taking her interest in mixed metals into the realm of taxidermy. In her part-machine, part-animal creations, we’re privy to how adept she is at using cybernetic implants to create a dialogue between the natural world and its opposite, the encroaching industrial world. Whether or not you see harmony in this fusion or cry ‘travesty’ is, of course, a matter of perspective – and it’s in this unresolved space that art thrives.

1 ANKER POWERHOUSE
Some people can’t get through a day in the city without a power bank on hand, let alone while on an adventure in the wilderness (heaven forbid you encounter Pokémon during your trek). Any old power bank simply won’t cut it when spending days away from civilisation, but the Anker PowerHouse is a different beast altogether. Though larger than many, the PowerHouse packs a massive 400wh into a just-over-4kg unit, making it the world’s smallest of this calibre. Impact-tested to take a beating and sporting digital reading panel so you know exactly how much juice it has left, the power supply can take a number of different connections, while recharging your phone up to 40 times. If you have the muscle to take a minifridge into the woods with you, it’ll keep your beers cool for a good seven hours too. US$499, available at amazon.com.
2 GARMIN FENIX 3 HR
Your average wrist-worn smart device will give you enough to go by when in the urban jungle, but when you’re setting foot in the real deal, you’ll need a watch that’s meant for it. The Garmin fenix 3 HR gives you all the things you’d want in a smart watch – from customisable faces to heart rate and activity tracking – but its performance-pushing extras are what makes it a formidable ally when facing the elements. With a steel and silicone housing that boasts a readable display in sunlight and water resistance of up to 100m, the fenix 3 HR intelligently monitors your oxygen consumption and advanced physiological metrics for specific activities. It also keeps you on point with an altimeter, barometer and advanced GPS/ GLONASS satellite reception, making sure you only ever lose yourself figuratively. US$599, available at amazon.com.
3 GOTENNA
While your smartphone can provide tunes for good vibes around the campfire and make emergency calls in worst-case scenarios, that’s all it’s really good for once you’re out far enough that reception becomes a distant memory. Unless you’re planning to go old-school with a set of walkie-talkies, goTenna is your best bet to keep everyone in your group accounted for. When paired with your smartphone, even in the absence of mobile signal, goTenna allows you to stay connected via off-the-grid, encrypted texts through its dedicated app, whether in a one-on-one conversation or broadcast to anyone with the device. Marking you and other goTenna users’ GPS locations on a detailed map, you’ll know in an instant if one of your pals strays from the trail and finds themselves in a pit of quicksand. The MVPs here are the 150-Day Grain-fed Onglet Roast ($45) and the Grass-fed Prime Rib On The Bone ($16/100g). The former comes in a staggering portion that does not dissipate its gamey flavour, which is amplified by hints of black pepper. Breakfast For Champs A shake made of blueberry, kale, wheatgrass, watermelon, coconut water, cucumber, celery, honey, and chia seeds. It sounds like a lot, but once you blend them altogether, it’s really good!
Starring Man If I could pick anyone to play me in my own biopic, I’d go with Vince Vaughn. I think it just works on more than a few levels!

WHERE EMPIRES ARE ALL ABOUT POWER, JAVIER PEREZ’S APPROACH TO BUILDING HIS CULINARY EMPIRE FOCUSES ON A DIFFERENT P-WORD: PEOPLE. AS THE FOUNDER OF SERIES OF INTENTIONS – THE GROUP BEHIND THE WILDLY POPULAR KILO, GRAIN TRADERS AND NEWLY LAUNCHED CAMP KILO – PEREZ IS CREATING DINING ENCLAVES THAT CUSTOMERS CAN TRUST FOR HEARTY FOOD AND A RELAXING TIME. Culinary Icons I look up to Francis Mallmann and Alex Atala. Both have showcased how their culinary lives are just a part of who they are. Their broader perspectives on life are something to be admired.
Good Read I’d recommend The Four Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz. It’s an easy read along with heavy insights for values that will change the way you work and live.

You grew up illustrating zines. What piqued your interest in zine illustrations? I was and am still into the punk scene. I have been going to punk shows since I was young, and zines have always been a part of that. Punk zines like Lisa Carver’s Roller Derby, Jim Goad’s Answer Me!, Aaron Cometbus’ Cometbus, and Aaron Probe’s Probe really inspired me, and it just took off from there. How did you develop your style of illustration? It took forever, and I’m still learning and sharpening my art as I go along. I didn’t go to art school; I just wanted to draw cartoons, especially on skateboards. What does a regular day look like for you? I’m obsessed with my dog, so my day involves a lot of chasing and walking and roughhousing. I wake up, get coffee, and then draw and write all day. Then, at around 6pm, it’s time for cold beers and I do more drawing until about 2am.
JAY HOWELL How did you come to design the characters for Bob’s Burgers? Loren Bouchard, the creator of the show, used to come to my art shows in San Francisco. I’d give him all these zines, and we became friends from there. One day, he asked if I wanted to work on something new; it turned out to be Bob’s Burgers and it just snowballed from there. If you could introduce a new character into Bob’s Burgers and voice it, what kind of character would it be? Maybe my dog. I could do the voice because he can’t talk at all. With Sanjay And Craig, the humour gets a little more subversive though still hilarious. Has there ever been a moment where Nickelodeon had to pull you back to cater to its younger audiences? Oh, constantly. We always want to write for ourselves and for our friends, so we snuck in so many secret and bad jokes. There’s some nasty stuff in there! What was the first pair of Vans you owned? Back then, I would buy the Sk8-Hi’s and cut the first ring off, then duct tape them up like all the other cool skater guys. I’ve had a million pairs of Half Cabs and Chukkas too. Any plans for a dog-themed cartoon soon? Yes! Right now, my partner and I are writing a movie based on a very cool dog. I really hope it gets made!

With silicone tips in three sizes and a housing that anchors in the outer ear, it fits snugly all the time, whether you’re sitting upright or lying down. Expect a crisp listening experience with rich audio in high-resolution, a twist cable design for tangle-free storage, and a built-in mic that’s mobile phone-friendly so you won’t have to miss calls. $149, available in Black and White at authorised retailers. ANIMAL CRUELTY BATS AND WOLVERINES DON’T TYPICALLY EVOKE FEAR OF A BROKEN SPINE, BUT THEIR COMIC BOOK SUPERHERO COUNTERPARTS ARE SOME OF THE MOST ENDURING AND REVERED OF OUR TIME. HOWEVER, NOT ALL CAPED CRUSADERS INSPIRED BY ANIMALS MAKE IT TO THE BIG SCREEN – AND, AS YOU’LL SEE, SOME OF THEM SHOULDN’T HAVE EVER MADE IT PAST THE BOARDROOM.

The first crime that Richard Raleigh should’ve stopped is his red-andyellow striped outfit, complete with see-through sleeves [shudders]. Unfortunately, doing so would be removing the only thing that actually ties The Red Bee to…well, bees. Unlike other superheroes who share similar abilities with their insectderived monikers, The Red Bee doesn’t actually possess any extraordinary talents. Aside from an ill-defined “stinger gun” that – and we can only guess here – incapacitates his foes through anaphylactic shock, the flamboyant vigilante’s only edge over the enemy is a few well-trained bees that he keeps in his belt. His favourite bee is named Michael – be very afraid.
SQUIRREL GIRL
MAGGOTT Folks, this is what happens when you let a digestive parasite problem go unchecked. In the case of Maggott, we suspect he let worms run amok in his stomach for so long that he no longer had one; depending on two bloated, biomechanical slugs to do the digesting for him. The upside? They can eat anything, meaning he’d never go hungry and could vanish enemies (and good guys too, we suppose) if he so chose. The downside? Nobody wants to hang around a guy infected with worms, as was demonstrated when he was dropped from both the X-Men and Generation-X, before being exterminated in a government concentration camp. We think that last bit was a bit extreme – we would’ve used a simple course of antibiotics.
Though she’s become somewhat of a cult favourite amongst comic book fans, a number of questions continue to loom over Doreen Green’s superheroine persona: What were her parents up to that led to her squirrel-like mutations? Why is her squirrel sidekick named Monkey Joe? Does she like the taste of acorns? Though her prehensile tail, razor-sharp claws and wood-chewing teeth have proven her ability to take down even the greatest of nemeses, even defeating Doctor Doom and saving Iron Man in the process – with the help of a horde of squirrels, no less – wasn’t enough to keep Tony Stark from shooing her away like a rodent eyeing his lunch. Ouch.
RAZORBACK
THE WHIZZER The Whizzer’s winged headwear gives off the impression he descended from the heavens, with the speed of Hermes bestowed upon him by almighty Greek Gods. That scenario is, oddly, more believable than the actual origin story of this yellow spandexclad hero. After being bitten by a cobra in an unspecified part of Africa, Robert Frank’s father thought it wise to give him a blood transfusion from a mongoose. Both medical and parental negligence aside, this somehow cured his fatal snake bite and granted young Frank the gift of super speed, thus giving birth to The Whizzer. Sorry bro, The Flash did it better.
There’s a fundamental difference in the boar-ish background of this one; where superheroes like Spiderman didn’t have a say in their mutations, Razorback chose to adopt the appearance of a big ol’ pig. There’s no questioning the fright one feels when a wild boar charges at you at full speed, but when you can see that there’s a man underneath the tusks – who works as a trucker by day and whose sole super power is the ability to operate any vehicle – it all becomes a little less threatening. The only possible explanation for the get-up is that he was hungrily thinking of a luau before deciding to fight crime.
BLACK CONDOR Remember how in The Jungle Book, despite being raised by beasts and all efforts to fit in with his furry guardians, little Mowgli simply couldn’t change the fact that he was human? Well, those rules didn’t apply to baby Richard Grey. Raised by birds in Mongolia after his parents were slaughtered by bandits, the infant’s lack of feathers didn’t seem to matter when he was taken in by a family of condors and miraculously learnt how to fly. It gets weirder: after returning to the U.S. and failing to stop a senator from being assassinated, Grey stole the dead senator’s identity and took office as a flying, crimefighting politician. Sure, like you can stand a chance to run a country without any background in politics. Good one. Oh, wait.
