Extravagant Destination By Allegra Wrocklage

an isolated region 200 km north of the Arctic Circle near the small town of Jukkasjärvi lies Sweden’s number one destination: IceHotel. Despite its unlikely location, IceHotel has become the extravagant “hotspot” for those seeking a unique, almost fairytale experience. Measuring roughly 5500 square meters, IceHotel is the world’s largest hotel made entirely of ice and snow. Built from scratch every year starting in mid-November, IceHotel is constructed with bricks of pristine ice from the nearby Torne River as well as snow. At the end of winter, the entire structure melts back into the river. During the winter months that the hotel is open, staying there is an unforgettable experience. IceHotel is in essence an art exhibition, as every year top artists are contracted to design the architecture and artwork of this ephemeral structure. It consists of a main hall, art suites, snow rooms, the Ice Church and the Absolut Icebar, each designed with painstaking care and detail by the artists. Art suites are designed by different artists to have a unique theme, so that every guest will come away with a unique experience from IceHotel. The rooms are lit by different colored light filtering through sculptures of ice and snow, giving the inside of the hotel a whimsical, peaceful atmosphere. While enjoying your stay visitors can also go on safaris via dogsled, reindeer sled, or horseback to explore the pristine landscape, wildlife, and even the northern
lights. Despite the freezing arctic temperatures of the hotel’s location, inside IceHotel it is never colder than -5°C to -8°C. Visitors sleep on beds of ice and snow wrapped in thermal sleeping bags and reindeer skins for warmth. Art suites start at around $1700 per night.

Londolozi offers numerous other activities to give guests a way to relax and reconnect with nature and their senses. Guests can receive massage therapies, take yoga classes, learn about the area’s culture and ecosystem and sleep outside under the stars. MTV Channel 36 on my TV has been Music Television for as long as I can remember. At least, that’s what it’s always been called. In reality, the amount of music actually present on the channel has been at a steady decline for years. I’m sure your parents bore you with stories as much as mine do about how “when I was a teenager, they actually played music on that channel, not all that junk you watch now.” It does cause one to wonder about such a substantial change. Was the music alone not bringing in enough viewers? Or was the prevalence of the rest of pop culture simply too much to ignore? Either way, I highly doubt that MTV has any less viewers than it did in the 80s and early 90s, but I’m willing to bet that the channel is now attracting a much different demographic. That is, while most music-obsessed teens of the early 90s would tune in every afternoon to “Alternative Nation” (videos by “alternative bands” such as Nirvana and Pearl Jam were focused), the equivalent teens of our generation probably aren’t excited for tonight’s brand new episode of “The Hills,” which basically consists of rich, tan blondes having scripted arguments. Or the new episode of “16 and Pregnant,” for which the title says it all. Or “Parental Control,” where parents choose new guys to replace their daughters’ douchebag boyfriends and sit on their couches watching the subsequent dates. So while MTV still offers programs that attract viewers, the attraction has absolutely nothing to do with music, and the harsh truth is that it’s somewhat of a trashier attraction nowadays, as well.
“Was the music alone not bringing in enough viewers? Or was the prevalence of the rest of pop culture simply too much to ignore?” Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy watching “The City” and I know everyone gets a kick out of “Jersey Shore” and their fist-pumping, gelled up stars every once in a while, but the scarce presence, if not absence, of music on the show most days is just embarrassing. To its credit, MTV started its new channel, MTV Hits, in 2002, which plays a constant stream of music videos. They basically just replaced the old school MTV with this show, which would be a pretty good solution to this music famine except that it isn’t available through all cable systems, while MTV still is. So maybe MTV would please everyone by renaming their channel? The N recently renamed itself to TeenNick (a choice I personally find much more limiting and offputting), and so far it hasn’t suffered any from it. I don’t know what reasons a network needs in order to officially

change their name, and of course any modification would then have a domino effect onto the multiple sister networks MTV2, MTV Jams, MTVU, etc, likely causing many issues, but it’s still pretty ridiculous for it to be named Music Television. Total Request Live, the major MTV series that featured music videos and daily guests, was cancelled in November 2008, and its replacement, FNMTV, a music video program featuring viewers’ instantaneous feedback, lasted less than a year. So what’s left of the music?? AMTV airs music videos on the station from 3am to 8am. Clearly their research department discovered that that is the time slot during which most Americans like to watch music videos…right?
“The big question is: why this gravitation away from music?” So the big question is: why this gravitation away from music? It appears as though it’s practically impossible to keep up with MTV’s constantly changing, crazy ways of still (technically) including music on their channel. But maybe they always anticipated our giving up. For a few years now critics have deemed MTV’s reign as a music source over, forfeited due to the ease of viewing videos on the Internet. I suppose it’s true that we can easily look up our favorite music videos on Youtube instead of waiting for TRL at 3pm, but that wasn’t all TRL was good for. It’s the ambience, the culture, that’s missing when you use the Internet for music. You have to admit you miss keeping up with Carson Daly’s most recent weight loss or gain, and I always hoped for the day that I could sit in the TRL crowd with my I Heart The Backstreet Boys poster. Now the only appearance I can hope to make on the station is as an annoying girl on The Real World. But maybe I’m the only one who misses the good old MTV with music. Indeed it is hard to imagine life without hating Spencer Pratt, for how else would I bond with girls in my new classes? Maybe Americans just have a secret desire to watch trashy television in order to feel better about themselves, and music videos just weren’t cutting it. I guess we’ll never know. So was it just a lost cause to continue as true Music Television anyway? Maybe. But I don’t think anything justifies the sad excuse for a television show that is “Rock of Love.” … Hold on, that’s VH1. Well, that’s a whole other story…
