J O S H S I M S M E E T S T H E D E S I G N E R S “There are,” admits Henrietta Rix, cautiously, “so many friends that I wouldn’t in a million years set up a business with. It could be a recipe for disaster - and a lot of my family said we had to be really careful. But, you know, people often actually think me and Orlagh are twins. We live together. We hang out together. And so she’s someone I 100% trust. And that’s just as well, because the business has really become our lives.” Indeed, when Rix and friend Orlagh McCloskey set up Rixo just a couple of years ago - the name comes from conflating their surnames - they probably hadn’t expected it to do so well quite so quickly. But Rixo’s angle - vintage-inspired, allsilk, prettily printed, slightly bohemian dresses and blouses - seems to have tapped into an unexpected demand. “Whether you’re a mum looking for something to wear to your daughter’s wedding, or a young woman saving up to have something to wear to her graduation,” as Rix puts it. It was precisely their brief experience as fashion buyers for high street brands TK Maxx and Asos - brief because both are still in their early 20s - that convinced them there was a need for something more than fast fashion. “Ten years ago, the idea that you could buy something current and cheap, wear it out that night, and never wear it again seemed like a really exciting one,” explains Rix. “But if you shop that way, you soon get frustrated by seeing four other people out in the same top that evening. And customers are that much

But it does encourage customers to buy what they like quickly when they see it. “It would be easy to over-saturate the market with something successful, we saw that in fast fashion and the second season, around half of it ends up in the sale. We don’t do sales either. And I speak as someone who personally likes to wait it out for the sales too...” This is not to say that Rix and McCloskey have not had to scale a steep learning curve over the last couple of years. They’ve learnt the impor tance of staying on top of cash flow, for example. “When we set out, we were big on keeping care of overheads, really on doing everything on a shoe-string, but with a lot of common sense too,” says Rix. Ensuring stockists receive their deliveries on time quickly became an essential too, while the designers have also

increasingly finessed precisely what Rixo is about, all too aware that the notion of making ‘vintage-inspired’ frocks has come to be a somewhat loaded one following recent years’ interest in all things period. “There are a lot of those tea-stained, Betty Boop, vintagey brands out there, the kind of thing you see at the Goodwood Revival and similar events,” says Rix. “And we’re definitely not about that. We cer tainly look to the past - we both love the designs and prints of people like Ossie Clark, Pucci and Celia Bir twell, for example. But you have to make

O w n e r & Wo m e n s we a r B u ye r I love soft tailoring and luxurious fabrics, they are the subtle combinations that make up the ideal classic pieces that won’t date and feel so luxurious to wear. This season we’re seeing a lot of lovely tactile fabrics, in particular velvet which seems to be making a huge comeback. The velvet Lofi hooded puffa jacket by Annette Gortz is a particular favourite of mine, its super-soft velvet exterior exudes supreme comfort and subtle everyday glamour. J O S H S I M S M E E T S E H A L F O F T H E P A I R “Believe it or not,” says Guy West, one half of the men’s footwear design duo Jeffery-West, “at one factory the workers actually refused to make our shoes. I suppose it’s like any industry - when you’ve been doing something the same way for so long, and someone wants to do it differently, there’s resistance. ‘I’m not making that shoe with the weird pointy toe!’”

SOUL TO SOLE Thirty years on, however - Jeffery-West was established in 1987, delivering its first collection the following year attitudes have mostly changed. And yet Jeffery-West - with its signature Victoriana meets Steampunk aesthetic, “with a touch of military in there and a lot of Glam - some Bowie and Roxy Music”, says West - remains on the periphery, not the choice, as West puts it, of men who care much what ‘GQ’ says they should be wearing this month. “Most men don’t much care for what we do,” says West candidly, “so we’re still very much niche. We’re selling to men who appreciate the humour, irony or difference, who don’t

want just another pair of brown brogues.” The company might not be the best known - compared to the global brand giants that dominate much of men’s fashion now - but it can certainly lay claim to having, in its own quiet way, revolutionised English shoemaking. Many of the industry’s biggest makers have, post Jeffery-West, adopted a more style-driven position to cater for those growing numbers of generations to whom an interest in dressing is second nature. “And even with the factories who initially had reservations about working with us, well let’s just say that in time some of their own styles started to look rather like our best-sellers,” laughs West. Perhaps some job or other in the shoe business was inevitable. West, the son of motel managers, and Mark Jeffery, whose father once owned a shoe factory, had known each other since they were 10, growing up together in Northampton - the epicentre of men’s Goodyear-welted shoemaking in the UK. “Northampton’s only association with the fashion I was into as a teenager - the end of punk, the mod revival, the new wave coming through - was in its shoes, so I’d always wanted to work in the industry,” says West. “And with Mark’s background it was probably inevitable he would, though I think he perhaps regrets not going to work in the City or something - he’s very talented with numbers.” That they would set up a company together when quite

so young, however - both were barely into their 20s - was another thing. It was one reason why the factories they approached to make West’s designs at first blanched at the opportunity. But youth perhaps also gave them a readiness to try something new. “I was working for a shoe importer and could see that the Italians were more or less taking an English look and selling it back to us,” explains West. “And you could see that Northampton was pretty stuck in its ways. We still wanted to make use of all of its skills, but make the kind of thing we wanted to wear, something more flamboyant.” The insistence on quality manufacturing was something of a risk in itself - the benefits of Goodyear-welting are better known today, but three decades ago was little understood or appreciated. “Of course, all the old guys who always wore Goodyear-welted shoes knew that they lasted, that they could be resoled, that they moulded to your feet and so on, but our first customers probably only understood that eventually by wearing them,” says West. “But we benefited from starting out at a point when people were also just getting interested in British-made things, and paying attention to the likes of provenance and authenticity, which is far more commonplace now.” The initial knock-backs, and the gamble they were taking, didn’t deter West and Jeffery however. “We just wanted to still be in business in three months’ time,” says West of the scale of their early ambition. Growth, thankfully, came slowly but most surely, and was entirely self-funded. One of the footwear businesses West had worked for had gone bust, and so too had Jeffery’s parents’ business - so there was a natural resistance to borrowing. “We were lucky in that we were young, still living at home, no families, so that helped, but we also had a sense that it was best to keep our heads down,” says West. “We didn’t want to go to the banks, especially at the kind of interest rates that were being offered then. But we’ve always thought that way. We have the shop in New York. But for us to take the business to the next stage would take an awful lot of money and I don’t think we have the appetite for it.” West and Jeffery have, for example, thought about launching clothing - and the company has been approached many times with that very proposal too. “But we’re a small company. There’s only two of us, so it would mean big

changes,” says West. “Clothing is really a very different business. Plenty of clothing brands launch shoes and then find out how hard it is. And I’m sure the opposite is true too. I think we’ll stick with shoes and all the usual leather accessories that go with it.” In other words, having built a sizeable, reliable business, the duo don’t feel a need to rock the boat. It’s true that times are not easy right now: the company, like many others, is having to adapt to a new retail landscape that incorporates online sales and social media, while also coping with a rapacious rent and rate drive that has, for example, seen the former double on their Piccadilly store, and the latter rise by 40 percent. “It’s worrying,” says West. But the thinking is that Jeffery-West has a sufficiently loyal clientele that, as long as these customers come back and buy a pair every three years or so, the business is viable and sustainable. The brand even has its collectors now. “If 30 years ago you’d have told there would be men who

I remember buying this pair of plastic-soled Ravel shoes, and then painting the soles all different colours. That kind of thing was just what you did. “Music and style went hand in hand and it was all dynamic,” he adds. “And I think that shaped our readiness to go into business. I don’t know if we were products of the Thatcherite era too, but we had this ‘can do’ attitude. If you wanted to launch a business, you just got on with it. So we did.”

IN 1882 WILLIAM’S SON CHARLES PERCY BLADES WAS BORN and he followed in his father’s footsteps, becoming a master tailor who eventually built up a thriving business in Chelsea, London. Unfortunately Charles had a penchant for gambling and according to family records lost almost everything - including a fine house in the heart of Chelsea. IN 1900 HE BECAME A FATHER to Charles Hilton Blades who served in both World Wars, suffering breathing problems from being gassed in the trenches. He made a move to the North East for its clean sea air. A ‘dapper’ chap, Charles had also honed his tailoring skills from a young age from his father and set up his own tailor’s shop on Ifracombe Gardens in Whitley Bay. HE SOON ACQUIRED A LOYAL FOLLOWING, later opening a larger store in the town centre called ‘Charles Blades Continental’ selling the latest ready-to-wear fashions of the day for men, as well as continuing with his tailoring. FASHION FEELING Most of my styling inspiration comes from a young Michael Caine. He wore suit jackets that were cut shorter, yet had over-sized lapels to give the impression of a strong chest. And no one can pull off a suit and flat cap combination like him!

Step Inside

TYPICAL DAY A normal day starts the night before. I have rails of suits, shirts and trousers, so take the time to iron, press and steam my uniform ready for the next day. I could never just throw something on! My day could consist of multiple fitting appointments typically lasting from one to two hours. If I have no appointments due, my duties are on the shop floor, assisting customers.

THE JULES B TEAM I’ve been a part of the Jules B family for just over a year now. I use the word family instead of ‘company’ as, like all families, we each bring a little something to the table. We’re only a small team in Kendal menswear, it’s my second family!

We know their style and what brands they like. We also get customers who buy the whole wardrobe for that year in one afternoon!

SEASON’S STORE PICKS In winter I get ever-more excited about layering up and wearing proper clothes again! Long peacoats over a flannel or tweed suit with a lovely thick cashmere scarf accompanied winter brogues or boots. That said, the Kendal man also requires a strong weatherproof jacket that can be relied on when the weather turns particularly sour. A waxed Barbour jacket has been the staple choice for many, but do not dismiss the likes of Handstich and Schneider jackets. Both brands offer superior comfort and functionality and can be easily dressed to create a very sophisticated ensemble.
