Letter from the

EDITORS

"Throughout university, all we ever wanted was to become adults. We would daydream about the business-casual outfits we would wear at our dream jobs, the bottomless MAC lipstick collections we could finally afford, and have support from our perfect boyfriends. However, what we didn’t realize was that life in our twenties is still a time of searching. It would be tough to get that dream job in the first place as a woman fresh out of university. It would take years before our MAC lipstick collections could grow, and some of us are still waiting for that perfect boyfriend. The fear of not getting a job, not achieving a goal, or failing at something is often not spoken about. These subjects may be taboo, but we are ready to lay it all out in the open. In this special edition of Taboo, we shed light on the transition between university and the real world through a fashion lens. It’s time to reimagine what your future is, what it will be, and what it can be. "Fear is temporary. Fashion lasts forever." Sincerely, Sara Warner, Cassie Tari, Lydia Gibson, Julia DiSabatino, and Leah Somerville

Within the post-graduation period, getting an internship to kick start your career is a big honour! What you wear to an interview and in an internship creates an image of the type of individual and worker you are. By selectively choosing your attire, you are able to present yourself as the right candidate to hire for a long term position! Here are 5 tips to secure your spot in the office through fashion! know your workplace

Before you go in for the interview, internship or real job, DO YOUR RESEARCH. Whether it be a bank or an advertising agency, each business requires a certain dress code for their employees, and as someone wanting to join this group of individuals, you are no exception. Let the hiring manager know you are ahead of the game over any other applicants!

4

better to be overdressed: If you’ve ever been that girl who shows up to a costume party in a full body costume instead of the anticipated animal ear addition, you know exactly what I’m talking about! First impressions in interviews mean everything; however, you would rather stand out for putting in more effort than being known as the person who put in none. Plan your outfit for the interview before hand so you know it is appropriate for the workplace you desire to work in! Websites such as Polyvore.com help with this planning process!

wait to purchase your clothes Once you have started planning for your interview and the job as a whole, use your own clothing instead of purchasing new ones. Until you have your job and dress code secured, try not to spend any excess money! You are sure to have something in your closet that works!

5

ask!

Yay! You have been hired! So what’s next? Your first day at the office is Monday and you are still clueless to what is appropriate and expected of you. This next step may seem obvious, but many people will not do it! Ask your supervisor! They have seen what qualities you bring to their company and believe you fit in well, so they want to see you succeed in many different aspects.

confidence is key

As an intern, you need to realize that your future within the company is not necessarily secure after the internship period; You cannot however, let this discourage you. Exude confidence in every task you complete for the company, and let them get to know you through your ability to work in the company, but also as an individual. Add pieces to your wardrobe that screams who you are! Whether that be statement jewelry or an interesting pair of shoes, fashion can speak louder than words and can give people an insight into who you are as an individual! Depending on what industry you are interning in, the levels to this may vary!

ou know the drill after a big event. Shoes come off, hair often goes up, and the closest fast food restaurant seems to be calling your name. Sound familiar? The iconic John Legend, Chrissy Teigen, Kim Kardashian, and Kanye West photo says it all. The best part of a night out is what happens after it ends. But for all my fashion-forward friends that would rather be reading Vogue magazine instead of the McDonald’s menu at 2am, a night out is all about the outfit. Eveningwear is the perfect opportunity to stand out among the crowd and showcase your love for fashion. Whether you choose a sequined corset bodice, a high slit and stilettos, or a daring backless number, allowing for focus on a single accent is a sure way to take your gown from drab to fab. Choosing the perfect silhouette, colour, or even deciding between flats or heels can be daunting. But then again, so are attending large events as a twenty-something. Eveningwear is something that we can control and steer based on inspiration. So lift up your gown, keep your head up, and look onwards. And don’t forget to enjoy that burger after your event. You will never be as young as you are today

– and you deserve it.

TIPS ON HOW TO TRANSITION YOUR MAKEUP FROM DAY TO NIGHT By: Sara Warner Am I the only one who thinks that there isn’t enough time in the day? Seriously, 24 hours isn’t enough. I mean, who can really say that they’ve had enough time to complete their day without feeling rushed? I know I can’t. I don’t know about you, but I like to plan out my entire day from the moment I wake up to when I go to bed. This helps me feel a little less rushed in completing my day, but even that doesn’t always help. For me, it’s applying my makeup in the morning that takes up most of my time – especially when I know that I’m going out at night. If I know I’m going out at night, I usually apply my full face of makeup in the morning before I go to school. That way, my makeup is already done and I can just touch it up before going out. Sounds like a pretty good idea, right? Well, not always. The problem is that I don’t like waking up early. I like my sleep. And I get cranky when I don’t get a lot of it. If I’m waking up early to do my makeup, I’m usually super tired, and sometimes it shows through my uneven “smoky eye,” my poorly blended foundation, and my notso fleeky eyeliner. Then, I spend even more time trying to fix it and suddenly 7:00 am turns into 9:00 am, and I realize that I haven’t had breakfast, brushed my teeth, or done my hair – not to mention I'm still

21

in my underwear. I then have to rush myself out the door and complete my day, but now I’m tired, hungry, and my makeup looks like sh**. So why don’t I just do my makeup when I get home? Great question, but here’s the issue: ain’t nobody got time for that. When I get home, I have to do my hair, touch up my makeup, do my nails, eat, nap, go to the LCBO, pre drink, grab money from the ATM, and clean my room all in approximately two hours. My night becomes so rushed. My friends are already predrinking by the time I only have one eyebrow drawn on. When I’m finally ready, it looks like Sephora threw up on my makeup desk and I feel like a hot mess after trying to get ready so fast. My point is, being rushed sucks. The last thing I want to do when I wake up in the morning is put on a full face of makeup, and the last thing I want to do when I come home from school is hurry to get ready for the night. I’m sure you feel the same way. So, I have learned a few ways to turn my daytime makeup into a hot look for the evening. These looks are pretty simple and don’t take a lot of time! .

Your DAY Look

Draw a thin line on your top lid and add some light eyeshadow to make your eyes glow!

Apply one coat of mascara for that fresh morning look! Lightly bronze your face to add some colour, but don't add too much!

Add a nude lipstick to look natural, and feel comfortable!

Your NIGHT Look Transform that one coat of mascara to bigger, bolder, lashes by adding some falsies!

Darken that bronzer you put on in the morning!

Go from glow to POP! Thicken your morning eyeliner and add a wing! Top off the glamour with some smoky eyeshadow and bottom liner!

Change those natural lips to something dark and bold! Matte lipstick will stay on all night!

HOW MICHAEL KORS SAVED MY

23

LIFE By:By: Lydia Gibson Lydia Gibson

pril 29th, 2013.

Not just the date of my 19th birthday, but the day that I received one of my most cherished birthday gifts. I remember taking out the sparkly white tissue paper to find that my parents had given me a Michael Kors wristlet. I knew this wristlet was special. What I didn’t know, though, was that this small leather wristlet was about to save my life. The Prussian blue wristlet was everything I could have hoped for. The pebbled leather was smooth to the touch, and the gold MK lettering shone as I tilted the wristlet back and forth in my hands. The twinkling of the gold lettering matched the smile on my face. What was most special about the bag, though, was not the colour or the fact that it was designer.

"This small leather wristlet was about to save my life" What was significant about my Michael Kors wristlet was the meaning that came with its size. It was a small wristlet, about the length of a pen, but large enough to fit my Allerject, the newest technology in epinephrine medication for people with anaphylactic allergies. My wristlet was significant to me because for the first time in my life, I didn’t have to carry my medication in a big purse.

Early 2013 was the year that Sanofi Canada, a large pharmaceutical company, came out with the Allerject. The technology surrounding the Allerject was amazing, as the Allerject itself had an operator that would actually talk you through how to use the medication if the emergency were ever to occur.

"For the first time in my life, I didn't have to carry my medication in a big purse" What I was most excited for was not necessarily the technology of the medication, but the size of the Allerject itself. Similar to the size of an iPhone 5, the Allerject was super compact and looked a bit like a cigarette package. Before the Allerject was the wellknown brand called Epipen, which I carried first around my waist like a belt as a nerdy elementary school student, and then as a belt on my backpack as a cooler highschool student. I know what you’re thinking. How unfashionable! But the Epipen was about the size and shape of a banana – so even as a 19yearold university student it was merely impossible to casually stash my Epipen in a cute wristlet for a night out. The Michael Kors wristlet was not just a wristlet. It was a celebration of technology. A celebration for every woman with a sense of style that also suffers from a severe allergy. And most importantly, it was a celebration that I was still alive despite living with food allergies. Michael Kors saved my life because it inspired me to never forget to bring my medication with me. I may have been the young girl with a big purse in university, but now I can take on the world as a woman in my twenties with just a small, handy, Michael Kors wristlet. 2Dress from Lulus Jacket from Forever 21
