THERMAL EFFICIENCY CALCULATIONS

H1/AS1 COMPLIANCE (DOUBLE GLAZED LOW E, ARGON GAS FILLED)
After having completed my thermal efficiency calculations during the concept stage I found that the proposed building's heat loss was less that of the reference building heat loss which meant that the building design at that time complied with H1/AS1. At this stage I had not selected or researched into alternative glass choices that I could have used and the implications of the thermal benefits that the building could gain by using an alternative option. My calculations were based on the factor that the buildings glazing would be double glazed, low e. I also had to consider the factor that the glazing size was extremely large and therefore meant was subjected to using the architectural window series instead of using thermally broken window series (thermal heart). As I had made the decision that I would use ArchitecturalSeries windows over the choice of ThermalHeart this then meant that I needed to find some other way to reduce heat loss in the building. I thought about the option of changing my glazing from Double Glazed - Low E Glass to a glazing option with a higher R Value and therefore considered adding the Argon Gas Fill. Rvalue

The thermal efficiency of the buildings wall construction during the concept stage were calculated using insulation of an R value of 2.8. I was aware that most of the heat loss of this building was lost through the large amounts of glazing. Therefore heat loss needed to be reduced from anywhere else possible to be able to keep the large glazing sizes that were important to the asthetical design of the building. Consequently I selected an insulation with a higher R value of 4.0 to improve the walls heat efficiency. The flooring construction systems also could be considered using a different construction method. For the first floor I have selected to use a poured concrete slab over compacted hard fill as the finished floor level is not that high above the finished ground level and therefore made it easy to be done in this manner which also makes it cheaper than having to commute precast slab onto site. An alternative option that could be used could be a timber framed flooring system over piles and bearers. The second floor construction system used is timber joist as this is the most economical choice. Precast concrete could also be used in this situation but it was economically not the best solution.
ORIGINAL OPTION (DOUBLE GLAZED LOW E)
I have selected solid timber flooring for the floor finish in many areas of the building including the main living areas of the building. This is due to the asthetical appeal based on what the clients mentioned they wanted. Another option for this flooring could be to have exposed polished concrete flooring. This would give a higher thermal mass and would be very easy to heat with underfloor heating in the winter. I decided against this choice as the look of the timber flooring was more desired in the end as the exposed concrete can make a space look and feel quite cold and a cosy bach feeling was a main point stated by the clients. After investigating alternative systems that were not specified during the conceptual design stage, the changes that I have chosen to make have overall improved the heat efficiency of the building to create a more economical design for the buildings life span. Throughout the whole design process I have considered and made decisions to best suit the building to come up with the design presented.
