Introduction to Architecture

This porfolio is the result of a summer at Pratt’s pre-college program, where I was introduced to the field of architectual studies.

INTRO. TO ARCH.

As of the first few days, I was introduced to several plans which interprate unique fassades of the arquitecture building, Higgens Hall. Within the plans, our professor, Michelle Gorman, initiated her lecture by explaining several methods of interpretion of the planes. After, each of the students undividually chose his or her favorite fassade in order to extract information form it. I chosse the west fassade because at first glancde it seemed as a very interesitng and unique pare of the building as a whole.

My first task assigned was to basicly extract as much information as i could from the plan. It could be from lines that stood out, the widows, to anything in general.

Moreover, after extracting those messy lines, I was to decide the lines that I was going to mark on my first analitical plane. The horisontal lines represnet the relationship between the top of the lateral windows with the windows from the other side, while the vertical lines fortell the lines that stood out the most for me. And finaly, the dashed lines represent the corners of some of the eindows wich connect with the oppoite corners.

As a second analysis, I had to create a boundery inside my plan. It could have been anything, a squear, a triangle, but i decided to convert four of my prior analytical lines into bounderies that parcialy made a trapezoid. After detecting my boundery, I repetitively conducted a recursive subdivision inside the boundery.

And as for the last analytical plane, I had to find a shape inside the previous boundary, and continuously repeat it in different scales.

After much analysis conducted to my west fassade plane, I was assignd a challegning exersise, wich tested how I could translate my previous anaysis into a 3D piece.

Moreover, after creating a whole 3D piece, the professor adviced us to identify the components that formed the entire piece. As a result I made several component wuch I then inserted some rules of my own,

After having each component seperately, I created rules that indicated precise aliniaments for the components to agregate. This specific agregation is composed of two components touching tips and the next component rotating.

This is another example of my components agregated. This is defined as a gregation where each component unifies with each outher’s sides and tips.

Having experienced building my firts model and components, when it came down to making a skin to each one of them, I struggled a lot. Nontheless, later my professor introduced me to the final project where I took the challenge to stuccesfully acomplish what I had not achieved and exede on what I already had acomplished.

For starters, I initiated by redoin three components. These are composed of the same main rules that formed the other ones, but appart from that, they cosist of alterations. Here it can be apreciated how I created a rule in order to agregate each component. The rule consists of alining a rotated component’s top side with one of the sides of the other component.

Later on, I managed to create a skin for each component. Each skin determined the spaces that my components were to create. Also, allowed me to subdivide it and open or create spaces within the skin. Finally, by subdiving the skin layer I created a space for light to enter in certain specific spots of my model. As it can be seen, there I stated to integrate scaled people inside my model, allowing the viewrs to better understand my model.

foundation ART

This section of my portfolio is dedicated to my foundation art class during the course at Pratt’s pre-college program.

As of the first day, I was assigned an exercise were I had to protionally sketch areas around the campus with pencil in short periods of time.

When it came down to sketching the library, the professor assigned us to illustrate everything from a two perspective point of view, or rather not foucoused to one are specifically.

Rather when we entered the library builing, the sketch of the bookshelves, needed to be one point of view.

When it came down to sketching this sculpture, some dificulties arrised. I figured thatthe shape of the “scoop and the shadows confiused me, but at the end I maneged to compleat the sketch.

For my final sketch, I decided to foucous on a specific area instead of the wholespace. I actually really enjoyed sketching areas that have more information beacuse i feel I can work more with the line weights to communicate a deeper and more analytic space.

Eventually, after finalyzing all of nine sketches, our professor, Sebastian, assigned us an elaborated project where I needed to photoshop the sketches with outside pictures, colors, as well as mixing sections of the real picture with the sketch.

Here I decided to fill in some parts of my sketch with diferent tones of blues, greens, and purple. Also, I integrated the handel and some details from the actual picture of the stairs.

For this edit, I decided to create a scene, I made a beach like atmostphere inserting different pictures of the sky, the sea, the beach, and the items in it. Also, because of picture inconviniences, I utilized yellow tones to fill in at the bottom of the picture.

When editing this sketch, i came uppon the idea to use sevral patterns in specific tones. after inserting all the patterns, it became difficult to notice the ground from the sky. This is why I integrated several lines which work as a horizon.

Lastly, for this edit, I started by filling in the trees that i never sketched in detail. I inserted the colors in terms of which tree was closest to the other. Moreover, I really wanted to have a blue sky made up of tiles, but when I insertes the tiles, they appeared on the whole picture. This mistake did not disturbed me at all, so what I did is that I also put more colorful tiles on some of the main widows to create some kind of similiar effect.

Later on, I used a yellowish foaming material, which allowed me to bend and twist with no inconvinience. The professor instructed us to choose a shape of the several that we arelready created. after selecting one, that shape was to be repeated minimun 48 times. Then, I agregated them all tirning the simple components, to this sculpture.
