18.3 Monitoring fuel consumption in diesel engines

O

val Wheel Flow Meters Model DON for fuel consumption measurement in diesel engines use the dual flow inputs and the ‘A-B’ setting. A pair of DON flow meters is used with a single electronic model ZOK-Z3 to give a net reading of fuel consumption.
In this offshore application, a fuel consumption measurement system has been effectively implemented on diesel engines in small ships/vessels. Figure 1. illustrates a pair of stainless steel flow meters - DON-S15… for flows up to 550 l/h per flow meter and one ZOK-Z3 per engine. As choking of the flow meter or strainer in the main line may result in higher differential pressure and result in diminishing fuel to the engine, an alternative is to use a pressure relief valve in the bypass line. Higher inlet pressure opens the pressure relief valve and ensures a constant supply to the diesel engine. In selective cases, the choice of a “pulsating flow” option may be recommended.

With this installation, fishermen are now in a position to monitor the actual real time fuel consumption and adapt the ship’s speed to optimise it. In general, it has been experienced that return on investment is seen within a month. Principle of Operation The Oval Wheel meters are positive displacement flow meters where the passage of liquid causes two oval gears to rotate within a precision measuring chamber and with each rotation a fixed volume of liquid passes through the meter. Magnets embedded within the gears initiate a high-resolution pulse train output. The pulse output can be wired directly to process control and monitoring equipment or can be used as an input to instruments supplied with or fitted directly onto the meter. The flow meter is available as a blind transmitter with pulse output capable of interfacing to most monitoring and control instrumentation or the meter can be fitted with or supplied with instruments such as totalisers, rate totalisers or batch controllers. These instruments also have monitoring and control output options including 4-20 mA, scaled pulse, flow rate alarms and batch control logic (preset metering) This technology allows precise flow measurement and dispensing of most clean liquids regardless of their conductivity, with other liquid

characteristics having no or minimal effect on meter performance. This metering technology does not require flow profile conditioning or straight line runs as required with alternative flow technologies making the installation relatively compact and low cost. Positive displacement flow meters are an inexpensive means to accurately meter high viscosity clean liquids as high as 1 million centipoises however, the appropriate meter must be sized so that the pressure drop across the primary measuring elements (oval rotor), does not exceed the maximum capability of either.

Fuel consumption in Diesel Engines – flow diagram

Areas of Application For all viscous, non-abrasive clean liquids like, petroleum, oil, chemicals, grease, fuels, inks, pastes and water. Stainless steel flow meters are suited to most water based products and chemicals and aluminum meters are suitable for fuels, fuel oils and1 lubricating liquids. Kobold DON specifications: • Measuring range: 0.5...36 l/h and 150...2500 l/min • Viscosity range: 0...1000 cP (higher on request) • Accuracy: ±0,2%...2% of reading • Material: aluminium or stainless steel • pmax: 100 bar; tmax: 120°C • Pulse output, LCD display, 4...20 mA, alarms, mechanical register sales@instrotech.co.za

Go green and be legal with VRU

I

n terms of the National Environmental Management: Air Quality Act (39/2004) responsible players involved in the storage, handling and transportation of petro-chemicals to end-users, should have an emission control and management strategy in place to ensure the reduction in emissions of harmful volatile organic compounds (VOCs). In March 2010, a detailed list of activities subject to legislative control and the ruling pertaining to the petroleum industry was published with particular emphasis on the storage and handling of products with a vapour pressure in excess of 14 kPa - that is all grades of petrol. Any facility with a cumulative petrol storage capacity in excess of 500m³ or throughput of 5 000m³ per annum - facilities which handle virtually all the petroleum in South Africa - must be compliant with the legislation. According to Phil Dawson, director of one of southern Africa’s leading liquid control and tanker loading specialist companies, the installation of vapour recovery and vapour combustion units can go a long way towards being legal and going green.Vapour Recovery Units (VRU) is a system used to recover vapours produced during fuel loading by capturing and

condensing into liquid the VOCs and is used primarily in refineries and fuel terminals (truck, train, tank, marine loading and tank breathing). “The installation of VRUs will not only increase an operation’s bottom line, it will have the added benefit of reducing the release of environmentally hazardous hydrocarbon emissions into the atmosphere,” he says. “The most reliable and efficient VRUs are carbon bed units and the units supplied by Aeron’s Jordan Technologies have been proven to recover in excess of 99% of VOCs generated during product loading. “Headquartered in Texas, USA, Aereon is a global leader in gas and vapour handling, combustion and recovery technologies and services and was formed in 2012 following Flare Industries takeover of Jordan Technologies,” says Dawson. With carbon bed VRU terminals and installations at refineries and petrol tanker loading facilities around the world, their VRUs are the “most efficient and cost-effective on the market today with users able to expect return on investment within 12 months,” he concludes. sales@soliflo.co.za

Quick connection of illuminated pushbuttons

T

he miniature AS-i module can be integrated in small surface mounted housings providing AS-i connection for four control and signalling devices. The AS-i cable supplies the connected LEDs and pushbuttons with up to 150 mA without requiring further auxiliary voltage. All inputs and outputs have short-circuit and overload protection. Up to 62 participants can be connected - 248 inputs and 248 outputs are possible for one AS-i network. The module indicates the condition of all inputs and outputs, as well as the energy supply and the communication status by means of LEDs. Since AS-i can also be used with round and spiral cables, the module for suspended pushbuttons is the perfect solution. The 2-wire cable is used for LED triggering and pushbutton query without requiring an auxiliary voltage. As there is often not much space in control boxes, the full potting protects the robust module against mechanical damage during installation. The connecting wires can be used for direct connection of illuminated pushbuttons in a surface mounting housing. The plug-in version is available as an alternative. The connectors are supplied with the unit. info.za@ifm.com

18.3 Linear motors with 22.5° radius extend range of system designs

W

ith new motor modules, the high flexibility of the eXtended Transport System (XTS) has been increased yet again. The straight and curved motor modules (180°) are supplemented by new variants with a radius of 22.5°. They make new track geometries possible, such as full circles, inside or outside curves, or squares with rounded corners. The range of applications can now be further extended, for example, by a flexible rotary indexing table and individual track layouts. The XTS linear transport system consists of modular linear motors with integrated power electronics and displacement measurement as well as 1 to n wireless movers and mechanical guide rails. The most diverse applications, geometries, lengths and radii can be implemented with these high performance components. The AT2020-0250 motor modules (+22.5°, outside curve) and AT2025-0250 (-22.5°, inside curve) greatly expand the possibilities of the XTS system with regard to track layouts. With a combination of different radii and straight sections, the track layout can be easily adapted to meet the broadest range of application requirements. Of course, matching guide rails are also available for the new motor modules. The XTS offers the possibility to change products and formats and to implement small lot sizes in very little time, all without mechanical reconfiguration. Complex and expensive mechanical systems are replaced by flexible software functionalities. New areas of application which are possible with the new motor modules include: • Full circle with movers running around the outside • Full circle with movers running around the inside • Polygon, circle segments connected with straight sections • Step- and S-shaped track layouts • Rounded-off rectangle with a freely selectable size

This results in a significant expansion in the range of XTS mechatronic system designs with regard to the application and the available installation space. kennethm@beckhoff.co.za

18.3 High pressure measurement capabilities expanded with new Coriolis flowmeters

I

ntroducing the Micro Motion F100P and HPC010P Coriolis flowmeters to measure accurate flow rates for wellbore chemicals injected at high pressure conditions. Both meters are designed for demanding offshore applications that require robust performance with low maintenance needs.

These meters will allow operators to confidently monitor chemical injection to ensure long term asset reliability and flow

assurance. The F100P is a 1-inch meter with a maximum pressure rating of 6250 psi (431 bar) that targets measurement for higher flow rates typical for hydrate inhibitors. The HPC010P is the first ultra-high pressure Coriolis meter developed by Emerson, and will have a maximum operating pressure of 15,000 psi (1034 bar) to address offshore chemical injection measurement for chemicals such as corrosion, scale and asphaltene inhibitors. According to the manufacturers, these meters are breaking boundaries for Coriolis meters in high pressure applications where positive displacement meters are today’s legacy practice. Coriolis meters deliver new value to customers through more accurate measurement and reduced maintenance over traditional PD technology. Coupled with Smart Meter Verification (on-line verification of meter performance), these meters provide safe, reliable and

highly repeatable performance with reduced maintenance in the toughest applications.

The new flowmeters will help owneroperators and service companies overcome many challenges of chemical injection applications and reduce chemical costs while increasing operational efficiency and system reliability. Michael.Eksteen@Emerson.com

Hygienic thermowells for temperature probes

Safe monitoring of speeds

I

T

ntroducing a new range of hygienic thermowells for temperature probes to meet the safety demands of the food and pharmaceutical industry. The function of hygienic thermowell fittings is to protect temperature sensors installed in industrial processes to allow maintenance and calibrations to be carried out without interruption to the plant running operations.Jumo’s thermowells are manufactured using all standard process connections and include clamp, VARIVENT, CIP-compliant conical seal and aseptic screw connections according to DIN 11864-1. They are made of 316L stainless steel. The probe tip of the thermowell has been reduced from 6 mm to 3.5 mm to considerable improve

the response time and should not deviate from the standard temperature response time. The internal structure of the different temperature probes fulfills the same purpose. Here, a spring mounted measuring insert is used to only allow a minimum sized air space in the fully assembled temperature probe. As a result, an optimal response time of t90 = 8 seconds can be reached in water. Depending on the application, all standard probes in the food and pharmaceutical industry can be utilized. Temperature probes and thermowells are available with coordinating predefined standard lengths. This saves on storage costs and simplifies maintenance. info@asstech.co.za

he DD110S and DD111S speed monitors have been developed for safety-related maximum-speed monitoring as used in carousels or centrifuges. The DD111S is specially designed for the low rotational speed of wind turbines. Both speed monitors can also be used for the ‘reduced speed’ operating mode, such as on machine tools. The speed monitors are certified to EN 62061 / SIL 3 and EN ISO 13849-1 cat. 4 / PL e – even though non-safety related sensors are used as pulse pickups. When the safety output has been triggered, it can be reset again manually or automatically. Speed is determined via the interval measurement on the inputs, where for example, two inductive sensors are used

as pulse pick-ups. The user can set the limit speed easily and effectively via three rotary switches (DD110S: x 1, x 10, multiplier / DD111S: x 10, x 1, x 0.1) – either in rpm or Hz. An easy and intuitive setting algorithm prevents unintentional change or manipulation of the set values. Automatic or manual reset of overspeed is possible. This function is set via wire links. The monitoring function can be enabled and disabled via a switching input. Besides the 2-pole safety relay, transistor outputs can also be used as an output for the status and error indication. Reliable operation at extreme ambient temperatures down to -40 °C is assured. info.za@ifm.com

18.3 Entrained Gas Management EGM now available for twin straight tube Coriolis flowmeters

I

ntroducing the OPTIMASS 1400 and OPTIMASS 2400 with the new signal converter MFC 400. Thereby, the Entrained Gas Management EGM feature is now available for the twin straight tube sensors, providing no loss of measurement with gas entrainment up to 100%. In the past, gas entrainments in liquid media presented a huge challenge for mass flowmeters because the relative movement between gas and fluid dampens the amplitude of the measuring tube. This dampening leads to inconsistent sensor amplitudes, which interfere with the electronics’ capability to determine the actual resonant frequency. While other mass flowmeters simply “freeze” their last stable reading to cover this “loss of measurement”, OPTIMASS flowmeters with EGM are able to follow and correct for the varying amplitudes. This is achieved for entrained gas up to 100% of volume and continues to present an actual measured reading, together with an indication or configurable alarm for the user. This indication can be very helpful to improve processes by identifying transient gas entrainments. The EGM feature is mainly relying on the fast, completely digital, signal processing of the MFC 400 signal converter. The MFC 400 also provides enhanced diagnostic and status indications according to NAMUR NE 107. OPTIMASS 1400 is a universal coriolis mass flowmeter for standard applications with liquids and gases. With its stainless steel twin straight tube design, it can be drained and cleaned easily, and presents a cost effective solution for accurate measurement of mass or volume flow, density and temperature in a variety of applications up to 130°C / 266°F. OPTIMASS 1400

features an optimised flow divider for minimum pressure loss. Next to standard flange process connections DN15…80 / ½...3”, it supports a wide range of industry standard hygienic connections. OPTIMASS 2400 is a coriolis mass flowmeter for bulk mass and volume flow of liquids and gases. Originally developed to meet

custody transfer applications in the oil and gas industry, it suits bulk, storage/loading/unloading and high volume measurement of products like syrup, molasses and raw chemicals as well. For flow rates up to 2,300,000 kg/h / 84,510 lbs/min, OPTIMASS 2400 is available in sizes DN100…300 / 4…12” with

NACE compliant stainless steel measuring tubes. The Super Duplex option offers a maximum operating pressure of 180 barg / 2,600 psi. For bulk measurement in the food and beverage industry, hygienic connections are available (DN100 / 4” only). salesza@krohne.com

18.3 Retro-reflective sensors eliminate need for manual alignment

T

he calibrated abeam optics on the Leuze PRK 18B Series sensors ensure precise striking of even the smallest reflectors, eliminating the need for time consuming alignment after mounting. With a host of new features, the innovative sensor can reliably detect small, thin and transparent objects, such as foils, even under extreme environmental conditions. These compact sensors have a shorter response time, higher switching frequency, improved adjustability of the switching point and a tracking function for extending the cleaning interval. Leuze abeam technology includes an auto-collimated lens

which is up to eight times more precise than standard optics. With a maximum deviation of ±0.25%, the light beam has a deviation of only ±2.2 mm over a distance of 500 mm. When compared to a two lens system, these auto-collimated sensors have only one optical channel, thereby eliminating angle errors and removing restrictions with regard to their fitting position. This makes them the ideal choice for detection of objects at short ranges. The elimination of an additional front screen prevents reflections and reduces drop formation for a more accurate sensing capability. Accuracy and reliability of detection is

further ensured through the compensation for temperature fluctuations of ±20°C. The Leuze PRK 18B has a switching frequency of up to 5 000 Hz, a response time of 100 µs that makes it considerably faster than comparative sensors at dynamic transport speeds and a jitter time of 32 µs, resulting in increased accuracy at static transport speeds. The M4 internal threads of the Leuze PRK 18B sensor are integrated into the highly robust housing, reducing materials by 80% and resulting in faster, uncomplicated initial mounting and subsequent device changes. bryant@countapulse.co.za

18.3 Endress+Hauser Pyrotemp appoints new General Manager

E

ndress+Hauser Pyrotemp has appointed Ben White as the new general manager starting from 01 January 2015. This follows the decision by his predecessor Chris Gimson, who decided to go on semi-retirement and take up the challenging role as training manager at the Endress+Hauser sales center. Ben White started his instrumentation career specialising in temperature back in 1988 and started own company in 1994 called STS Instrumentation. After STS was acquired he joined Endress+Hauser South Africa in 2003 as a product manager for the temperature product portfolio and was tasked

Meter + controller + recorder + HMI in one package now with e-mail notification functionality

to grow the temperature business specifically in the engineered solutions field. Along with his family, he moved to Germany in 2006 to work for the Endress+Hauser Global Competence centre for Temperature which dealt with general temperature support and temperature engineered solutions on a global basis. Among other responsibilities that he had while working in Germany, he was responsible for technical support for temperature products mainly for the Oil & Gas and Chemical industries. He played an instrumental role in providing temperature measurement solutions for Shell in their Hydrocracking &

Hydrodesulphurisation reactors globally which influenced Shell appointing Endress+Hauser as a preferred vendor for field instrumentation globally. The experience which he gained both in the local temperature business and global engineered solutions and projects business over the past 20 plus years will certainly be beneficial to the local production centre in Benoni and assist Endress+Hauser in becoming a prime temperature company to serve both the local and export African temperature market requirements through the Endress+Hauser Sales Centre based in Sandton. info@za.endress.com

Cost effective valve retrofit service

A

he Simex MultiCon series of devices are now equipped with an “E-mail notifications” system. This system enables the sending of e-mails directly from the MultiCon and makes the device ideal for hightech alarm and monitoring systems. Up to 32 different email messages can be defined by the user and the user can select the specific event which would trigger the sending of the message. The e-mail message will consist of the following elements: • topic and text of the message (both with fixed content) • an attachment containing momentary recorded values from the selected groups or the individual measurement channels in .csv format. Because the MultiCon supports secure logging (encrypted by TLS or SSL protocol), the account from which notifications are sent can be opened on any e-mail server.

local company offers a valve retrofit service that fits new internals and top works to an original valve, substantially saving costs and assurance that plant performance remains high and that safety standards are adhered to. It is important to note that retrofitting valves that are smaller than 150 mm or have a pressure rating below 60 bar is generally not justifiable. However, with larger sizes and high pressure rating valves, it becomes progressively more worthwhile. The valve retrofit service is usually undertaken on site at Mitech’s factory. The valve system must first be removed from service and dismantled, and if necessary, be machined on site. In many cases, when an existing valve needs to be replaced at a plant, the valve body is still in good condition, but the trim is no longer suitable, while the actuator and positioner may also need upgrading. Mitech designs the trims to suit the application and these can be selected from an extensive range of components, which includes the company’s energy-dissipating disk stack. Materials are chosen to ensure safe operation and long life for the valve.

It is now available as a laser class 1 option. The switch point can be set easily by turning the setting ring with an easy turn, lock function. A scale shows the distance set, allowing the switch point to be determined before installation. Whether it is shiny, matt, dark or light objects of any colour, the OID features reliable background suppression. The unit allows any angle of incidence and thus flexible mounting positions, simplifying installation and a saving in costs. In the same price range as standard sensors, the OID is a clever alternative for universal applications.

he QR24 inductive encoder series is now also available with a CANopen interface for mobile machines and industrial applications. Turck has added a variant with a CANopen interface to its QR24 encoder series. The new wear-free QR24-CAN variant is ideally equipped for use in mobile machines. Short latency times as well as a cyclical and event-driven communication are only two of the many benefits of the CANopen protocol, which is frequently used in this application field. These applications include crane and lifting technology, transport systems, construction machinery and also special machine building. The first pilot customers are already using the new contactless encoder with the CANopen interface in the construction machinery and wind power sector. As with other QR24 models, the sensor and the positioning element of the encoder are fully potted and designed as two independent and fully sealed units that withstand vibration or shocks on the shaft. Wearintensive ball bearings or seals, that lead to machine downtimes or long maintenance times are not required. The QR24 series has the edge over both optical and magnetic encoders. Thanks to its intelligent mounting concept using adapter rings, the permanently sealed IP69K encoders can be fitted on all standard shafts with diameters up to 20 millimeters. As well as the new stainless steel variants, Turck also offers the encoder as a multiturn or singleturn version with an SSI interface, incremental output and analog voltage/ current output.

18.3 New butterfly valve combines cost savings with high performance

A bull’s eye in quality.

T

he Fisher® 8590 high-performance butterfly valve brings a selection of disk seals, actuator designs and material combinations to meeting plant-wide throttling and on-off requirements. The design intent behind the 8590 butterfly valve was to give application engineers the ability to combine a single valve platform with a selection of proven technologies to control a diverse range of CL600 process demands. As an example, several dynamic disk seals are available in the 8590 design to meet temperature conditions that range from lowto-moderate up to 538°C (1000° F). Severe service and cryogenic applications can be met as well with the appropriate metalpolymeric or rugged stainless steel seal construction. Since one valve design meets several needs, overall valve engineering, purchasing, installation, operation and maintenance costs become less. Utilizing a lugged body design across the CL600 size range of NPS3 – NPS24, the 8590 can incorporate a splined shaft that accepts either a spring-and-diaphragm or pneumatic piston actuator. It is also available with either a square or keyed shaft that combines with hand levers, hand wheels or pneumatic piston actuators. The pressure-assisted design of the 8590 disk seals provides tight shutoff and permits the use of smaller, less expensive actuators in meeting full ASME B16.34 shutoff capabilities. The 8590 offers true bidirectional shutoff, which means that torque necessary to open and close the valve remains constant regardless of the differential pressure across the disk. Slam-shut conditions are not created as the disk nears its seat, which extends seal life and avoids actuator and piping damage. Besides shutoff given by the choice of elastomer and metal disk seals, the optional ENVIRO-SEAL® packing system combines with the valve’s micro-smooth shaft surface to keep emissions below 100 parts per million (PPM). Yet another extreme 8590 capability involves sour liquids and gases, with trim and bolting materials available to comply with NACE MR0175-2002, NACE MR0175-2002-2003, MR0103, and MR0175/ISO 15156. With a CL600 rating per ASME B16.34, the valve’s face-to-face dimensions meet EN558, API609, MSS-SP68, and ASME B16.10 standards. The valve body self-centers on the line flange bolts as a fast, accurate means of centering the valve in the pipeline. Michael.Eksteen@Emerson.com

18.3 Frost & Sullivan recognizes Setpoint’s condition monitoring solution

I

n a market where the online condition monitoring trend is gaining prominence, and diagnostics and predictive maintenance strategies are becoming more important in understanding the causes for machine failure, Frost & Sullivan has awarded Setpoint with the 2014 Global Frost & Sullivan Award for Customer Value Leadership. Companies that are able to effectively deliver and communicate the value and cost benefits of such hardware and software condition monitoring solutions are expected to be highly successful in this market. The Setpoint story began in 2010 when Metrix Instrument Company embarked on efforts to expand into the API 670 monitoring market. Initially, Metrix had focused primarily on device-level offerings such as sensors, vibration transmitters, and vibration switches. Faced with the challenge of further growth, a strategic decision was made to develop an offering that would allow the business to enter the systems market. Universal monitoring module A team of experienced individuals were assembled to build and lead the new Setpoint product line. Within18 months, the Setpoint platform was developed and the first units were shipped. Dozens of innovations were embedded in this new system, including a self-contained “universal” monitoring module (UMM) that could be configured do any required measurements in a single module type – making the addition of new measurements no more difficult than loading a

new app on your smartphone. In 2011, the Setpoint team added condition monitoring software to its portfolio and entered into a partnership with OSIsoft, - maker of the PI System software. Together, they showed that high-bandwidth, submillisecond vibration waveform data could be streamed directly into a PI database – something that had been routinely dismissed by the vibration industry as “impractical” or even “impossible.” In less than 12 months, the performance capabilities of the PI System continued along its Moore’s Law trajectory, doubling in speed and making high-speed, online vibration data collection completely practical. The Setpoint team’s decision to harness the power and installed base of the PI System, rather than developing a standalone condition monitoring infrastructure, has been recognized as insightful and strategic. The PI System is a real time data infrastructure that captures, manages, analyzes, and visualizes, real-time data. Strategically, the Setpoint team was able to reduce time to market by not re-inventing a real time data infrastructure and simply using the PI System instead. It was also able to tap directly into the huge installed base of PI System users globally, eliminating the need for the customer to invest in a separate condition monitoring software system. This results in significant cost savings by utilizing an already existing software platform in the PI System, instead of making additional investments into IT

and operations infrastructure and maintaining two separate ecosystems. Growth potential A primary reason behind Setpoint’s strategic partnership with OSIsoft is the elimination of redundant computing, network, and software infrastructure, using the existing PI System to do more for its customers. Another reason is OSIsoft’s ability to envision future market dynamics and Mega Trends that could affect the businesses, economies, and societies of tomorrow. A third reason is that making quick and informed decisions on the condition of an asset requires realtime analysis of large volumes of data, also known as Big Data. OSIsoft is said to be a leader in Big Data, with the PI System being an integral part of the Big Data ecosystem, converting real-time data into actionable information in critical applications such as oil and gas, power generation, and process industries. Customers use this data as part of their overall plant maintenance and reliability strategies to maximize machinery uptime and productivity. Performance value The open infrastructure of the PI System enables cross collaboration and knowledge sharing among its partners through a common platform by using a vast amount of historical and real-time data. Capabilities such as expert system anomaly detection, thermodynamic performance monitoring, statistical data mining, reporting tools, Microsoft Office integration, and many others are available through this network of partners

ADVERTORIAL

and their shared use of the PI System as the data infrastructure. Also, it is more likely that the required application already exists within OSIsoft’s Partner ecosystem. Setpoint’s smartphone-like approach to hardware and its use of the customer’s existing PI System data infrastructure demonstrates that it is possible to be innovative in this industry by tapping into unmet and unarticulated needs. The company has recognized the pervasiveness and widespread use of the PI System and offered a solution that replaces a separate condition monitoring silo with the PI System the customer is already using. In a market characterized by limited technology progress and development, Setpoint’s innovative approach to product development has produced several unique solutions, resolving the most critical challenges of its customers. Users have also responded positively, despite the presence of market incumbents. With its strong overall performance, Setpoint has earned Frost & Sullivan’s 2014 Customer Value Leadership Award. Each year, Frost & Sullivan presents this award to the company that has demonstrated excellence in implementing strategies that proactively create value for its customers. The primary focus should however be on improving the return on the investment that customers make in its services or products. steve.herbst@prei.co.za

Constant temperature monitoring of electro/mechanical enclosures

H

aving radically improved thermal imaging efficiency and safety through the introduction of its polymer infrared windows, IRISS is now addressing the need for wider electrical maintenance safety solutions. Indeed its latest introduction allows the company to add continuous monitoring to the list, both as a stand-alone capability and as an addition to its patented window products. Infrared imaging does a great job of detecting thermal anomalies caused by conditions such as a loose connections, overhead circuits and unbalanced loads. It does, however, only provide a snapshot of the faults on the day of inspection, leaving the subject components unmonitored for the balance of the year. To meet this need IRISS has now introduced a new addition to its range of electrical maintenance safety devices (EMSD). It is Delta T Alert™, a self-contained, wireless temperature monitoring system that attaches to an electrical enclosure cover. It bridges the

gap between infrared inspections by regularly recording and reporting critical temperatures within electro/mechanical enclosures. The patented Delta T Alert™ unit is simple to install and comprises two temperature sensors. One monitors the interior temperature within the enclosure and the other, the ambient room temperature. Both are configured to collect data on a daily basis, at specific time intervals. The data is wirelessly transmitted for analysis and trending and warns the operator if the internal temperature rises above pre-set thresholds. Remedial action can then be taken before the problem becomes serious and warrants unscheduled system shutdown, incurring costly downtime. This new IRISS technology can also be specified as an integral capability of its polymer window products. The combination ensures the problem is verified with no operational disruption. The on-board Delta T Alert™ system sends a remote alarm giving the location of the problem and temperature details. The maintenance engineer can then conduct a thermal scan of the live system, through the IRISS infrared window, in complete safety.Once the repair is completed and the system re-energised, a second infrared inspection will confirm the fault has been eliminated. The electrical enclosure can then be benchmarked and the system reset with the new baseline temperature delta. The new IRISS Delta T Alert™ monitoring system complements and enhances the safety and effectiveness of any electrical maintenance programme and its application is not restricted to electrical distribution systems, transformers and switchgear. It can also be used to monitor the health of a wide variety of motors and mechanical equipment, isophase and bus bar systems, controls and other enclosed systems.

18.3 Web-based real-time operations management and visualization software

A

nnouncing the release of FAST/ TOOLS® R10.02, the latest version of a web-based real-time operations management and visualization software package that brings revolutionary changes to real-time process information intelligence. This release is designed to significantly reduce engineering of large geographically dispersed systems, which requires both a different engineering approach and central managed deployment. The introduction of a master enterprise engineering database establishes a single engineering environment containing all common enterprise definitions and deployment data. This is easier to manage, less restrictive, and less complex than distributed databases. The Company has identified a rising need for the integration of the various disciplines and functions required for the delivery of humancentric information solutions utilizing new technologies such as industrial cloud computing, industrial SaaS, and the Industrial Internet of Things. In essence, the aim is to connect sensors, devices, and plant facilities to facilitate the remote access of data and enable supervisory control from just about anywhere. The FAST/TOOLS enterprise automation platform addresses these needs by offering comprehensive solutions for the deployment, operation, and monitoring of control system environments. This will help companies make faster decisions, reduce total cost of ownership (TCO), and achieve operational excellence. The main features of the newly released FAST/TOOLS® R10.02 are the following: Enterprise engineering management To reduce engineering time during the design phase and reduce travel time and costs for engineers and designers, Yokogawa has developed a platform-independent enterprise engineering module that allows engineers in remote locations to securely collaborate with each other and deploy applications via global IT networks. When installed on any of the servers belonging to an enterprise’s automation system, this module facilitates intuitive and centralized concurrent engineering and application deployment, with engineers and other

project personnel being able to access the same up-to-date project information on their displays, wherever they may be. This is easier to manage, less restrictive, and less complex than distributed databases. To enhance security, both user and server authorization is in place and the system and its applications are hardened to prevent failure and protect against unauthorized access. Enhanced data sharing As part of Yokogawa’s vision to help users unlock actionable insights from big data, R10.02 includes an embedded RDBMS engine. This is ideal for use in the enterprise automation environment, where data sharing is often required over multiple servers and domains and where there is a bi-directional exchange of data with external sources and within multiple environments. The embedded RDBMS engine allows for the parallel archiving and storage of data in a local historical database as well as the central RDBMS. Improved operational alarm management As enterprise environments grow more complex and need to handle an ever growing amount of data, alarms tend to occur with greater frequency. To reduce the number of maintenance- and commissioning-related nuisance alarms that can distract operators from responding to key operational alarms, a function has been added with R10.02 that inhibits the issuance of alarms based on limit settings. With this function, equipment maintenance can be performed without disturbing routine plant operations. Role-based geo intelligence The sharing of data globally across multiple levels and disciplines requires true role- and location-based security. With R10.02, users who sign in to the system using their OS login credentials are allowed access to data and controls based on their role and the location of their assets. Users can access their data and utilize allowed control functions from any available device. Christie.cronje@za.yokogawa.com

Plug-in connector housing for EMC applications

E

MC-protected versions have now been added to the line of Heavycon EVO heavy-duty industrial connectors. The cable glands with a bayonet locking mechanism make both lateral and straight cable outlet directions possible in a single housing. This enables a large number of ECM housing and cable gland variations to be created with just a few components. The cable outlet can also be subsequently adapted on site. The housing material is corrosion-resistant, and all seals are electrically conductive. This provides a shield attenuation of approx. 40 dB, which is sufficient for industrial EMC applications. The new IP 65/66-compliant housings are available in the B6, B10, B16, and B24 formats with a single or double locking latch. The housings can be purchased individually and are available in stock as complete plug-in connector sets with push-in contact inserts. seanh@phoenixcontact.co.za

The new generation of the TRIO POWER power supplies

D

eadweight testers are accepted as the most accurate method for the calibration of electronic or mechanical pressure measuring devices. The LR-Cal LDW series of deadweight testers are available in the ranges from 10 bar up to 1400 bar. The direct measurement of pressure (according to its definition as a quotient of force and area) ensures high accuracies and long term stability. These testers are used extensively in calibration laboratories in industry, standards institutes and research facilities. The LDW series are ideally suited to on-site use as well as for service and maintenance purposes. The customized assembly allows set up of a complete, compact system consisting of a universal basement and the measuring systems (piston/cylinder units). The high quality piston/ cylinder units are manufactured from tungsten carbide which is known for its small temperature co-efficiency. Fast and uncomplicated changes of the measuring range are possible using a flat spanner. In order to generate the individual test points, the piston/ cylinder system is weighted

with mass loads which are also C calibrated and specially adapted to the required application.M The basement is fitted withY the corresponding system,CM depending on the measuring range of the device under test. TheMY pressure is set via an integratedCY pump or, if an external pressureCMY supply is available, via control K valves (pneumatic models). For fine adjustment, an adjustable volume with precision spindle is available. The weight applied is proportional to the desired pressure and provided by using optimally graduated weights. As soon as the measuring system reaches equilibrium, there is a balance of forces between pressure and wheel weights. Due to the excellent quality of the system this pressure remains stable over several minutes, so that, for instance, adjustments of the device under test can be carried out without any problems. For users who require a digital pressure display for connection to the Deadweight Tester, the Keller Leo2 offers accuracies of 0.1%. An intrinsically safe version is available. sales@instrotech.co.za

Online thickness gauge

T

he WEBFREX NV is an online gauge that measures and controls the thickness of films and sheets, thereby ensuring uniform thickness. The WEBFREX NV features an operator station with improved operation and monitoring functions. As in most industries, manufacturers of the films and sheets used in such applications as rechargeable batteries (separator sheets) and product packaging need to construct production lines that can manufacture high-

quality products quickly and stably. Gauges ensure uniform film and sheet thickness by measuring and controlling this online, during the manufacturing process. To ensure high production quality and efficiency, these gauges must be highly precise and capable of operating at a high speed. The product features include the following: 1. Integrated data server function A high-performance PC is used for the WEBFREX NV operator station, and optional

software is available that allows this to function as a data server. This computer is capable of saving thickness distribution graphs (profiles) collected over long periods of time, thereby facilitating the tracking of film and sheet product quality even after product shipment. Optional software is also available that can display time-series data in three dimensions. By pointing and clicking on screen, users can easily select a specific profile for viewing and analysis. The integrated data server function eliminates the need for a separate data server, reducing both cost (initial and maintenance costs) and overall system size. 2. Long-term availability The operator station PC is a Dell product that has been customized based on Yokogawa’s specifications. This is a “long-life product” that will remain available for twice as long as commercial off-the-shelf products, for improved long-term maintenance. Likewise, the operating system for this PC will not need to be updated as frequently. With this dedicated product, the same model will be able to be used for a longer period of time, thereby easing the task of system expansion and replacement. Christie.cronje@za.yokogawa.com

Ultra compact infrared camera for the metal industry

T

he new OPTRIS PI 1M IR camera is especially suited to measuring the temperature of metals, as these exhibit a distinctly higher emissivity at the short measurement wavelength of 1μm than at measurements in the previously conventional wavelength range of 8 – 14 μm. The advantage of temperature measurements with the new infrared camera lies in the large amount of information in an IR picture/IR video and the short reaction time of 1ms for the output of temperature information

of freely selectable individual pixels. The use of these new image sensors allows a large dynamic range for temperature measurement so that the previously necessary use of relatively many and narrowly defined sub-ranges is no longer required. Intelligent measuring with a pyrometer is now possible thanks to the two-dimensional temperature recording of the Optris PI 1M. 18.3 Clip-through compression glands

A

time-saving range of compression glands has been launched locally to allow installers to draw and secure cables more easily into enclosures without the need for tools. With the introduction of HeluTop Easy compression glands the installer simply pushes the bottom end through the hole and twists it to secure it equally as tight as hand fastened alternatives. The installer can also space the glands more closely to save space as no tool entry is required for further fastening. The HeluTop Easy compression glands replace traditional threaded locknut compression glands which require the bottom end of the gland to be pushed through the cable entry hole and a locknut secured from the other side (usually requires another person to fasten the glands from the other side). Traditional glands also need to be spaced sufficiently far apart to allow spanners or other fasteners to be used to tighten each gland. Where the old compression glands may

have taken two or three minutes to install and mostly required an additional pair of hands on the inside of the cabinet to fasten locknuts, the new HeluTop Easy simply clips and twists

into place in two seconds. On large-scale or complex jobs, the use of the new clip-in solution can save hours of manpower and further frees manpower to be used elsewhere on the installation. The product’s unique, patented spring/ snap system allows easier installations in hard-to-reach areas and in no-access spaces where locknuts can’t be used. There are no disadvantages only substantial savings in man-hours and the ability to minimize space needed for shoot-through of multiple cables. Advantages • No tools required for installation • No threaded holes required • No locknuts required • Same clamping range • VDE-according to DIN EN62444 • Installation in tight areas and no-access spaces (lock nut side) • Assembly: push cable gland in and turn clockwise–can be done by hand • Large wall thickness range: 0,5-4,0mm doug.gunnewegh@helukabel.co.za

New I/O modules for extreme conditions

T

he Axioline F I/O system for signal acquisition in the control cabinet now includes versions with an extended temperature range of -40°C to 70°C. The robust modules with the XC (extreme conditions) extension are based on standard versions. In addition to bus couplers, they also include digital and analog input and output modules as well as a range of function modules. The PCBs used are coated with a special paint which improves their resistance to moisture and corrosive gases. This means that the new XC versions are ideal for use in applications with harsh ambient conditions, such as wind power plants or solar parks in regions with extreme climates. The new XC versions follow in the footsteps of the complete Axioline F I/O system with particularly high immunity to interference up to 8 kV, rapid signal acquisition, and a highly robust design, which means they can handle mechanical loads such as shocks up to 30 g. kevinp@phoenixcontact.co.za

Robust miniature sensors

T

urck has added the Q4,7 series of rectangular inductive sensors to its range of miniature sensors. These miniature sensors (16 x 8 x 4.7 millimeters) have been specially developed for applications in which they have to be fully embedded in metal, for example in press tools. These kinds of applications not only require robust sensors with large switching distances, but also require housings as small as possible to reduce the amount of surrounding metal which has to be removed to create the recesses. The Q4,7 meets all the requirements mentioned above namely a two millimeter switching distance, a robust metal housing, a highly flexible two meter connection cordset with an oil-resistant sheath as well as the possibility of being fully flush mounted. Turck has managed to house the status LED in the active face so that it stays clearly visible even when fully flush mounted. Brandon.topham@retautomation.com

18.3 A scalable, integrated ph/ORP measurement system that improves maintenance efficiency

T

he SensTation pH/ORP measurement system is a scalable and integrated solution that combines the unique capabilities of the SENCOM pH/ORP sensors and the SMARTDAC+ data acquisition and control system. This solution eliminates the need for a pH/ORP transmitter and allows users the choice of any of the paperless recorders in the SMARTDAC+ series, each of which can connect to up to 16 sensors. In addition to supporting a wide range of analytical and data control applications, this solution improves maintenance efficiency. Liquid analyzers are used in the oil, petrochemical, iron and steel, electric power, water supply, wastewater treatment, and many other industries. These analyzers are necessary to control the quality of raw materials and products,

monitor reactions, and manage water treatment. Conventional liquid analyzers are composed of a sensor and a transmitter that converts the sensor’s analog signals into digital signals for transmission over communications networks and the real-time display of data. Data acquisition systems are often used in plants to collect and log data from liquid analyzers. In 2013, Yokogawa released the SENCOM series of pH/ORP sensors, which are able to process digital signals and store calibration data and other types of information in digital form. This eliminates the need for a transmitter and allows direct connections with PCs and other digital devices. SENCOM sensors come with a communication interface and custommade pH/ORP display templates for use with the SMARTDAC+ recorders.

Safe data transmission in the field

T

he new push-pull Advance data connectors bring future-proof highspeed cabling directly to the field. Designed for data rates of up to ten Gbps, the connectors are protected against dirt, dust or humidity by means of IP65/IP67 protection. Due to their 360° shielding, they are also immune to electromagnetic interference. The push-pull technology means that users can insert and remove the connectors easily. Nevertheless, a mechanical locking mechanism reliably prevents unintentional release of the connection. The series includes versions for Profinet and Ethernet as well as fiber optic versions for POF, GOF, and PCF fibers. All connectors are designed for conductor cross sections from 26 to 22 AWG. Both the straight and 45° angled versions are suitable for cable diameters up to 9.5 mm. seanh@phoenixcontact.co.za

The key benefits include: 1. Easy to maintain The SensTation system eliminates the need for a transmitter and has a comparatively simple configuration, yet combines the unique and powerful features of Yokogawa’s SENCOM sensors and SMARTDAC+ recorders. Using a SMARTDAC+ recorder and the SPS24 SENCOM PC software, SensTation users are able to remotely monitor sensor and diagnostic data in real time from a PC, smartphone, or tablet device. They can analyze current and historical data and receive automatically generated e-mail messages when a device error has occurred or maintenance is required. Users also have the option of calibrating their SENCOM sensors offline in a laboratory or workshop, where working conditions are optimal. 2. Easy navigation and high flexibility and expandability SMARTDAC+ recorders have a touch panel user interface similar to that found in the latest tablets and smartphones. This means that users will find the navigation familiar, intuitive, and easy. And unlike conventional transmitters that have a limited number of input/output terminals, SMARTDAC+ offers users a range of I/O modules to choose from, ensuring that they can connect to and have a detailed, real-time overview of all the sensors at a particular site. The SMARTDAC+ GX20 and GP20 recorders, both of which come with a large touch panel, can accommodate up to 10 modules and 100 I/O channels, and the GX10 and GP10, which have a smaller touch panel, can accommodate up to 3 modules and 30 channels. The SMARTDAC+ recorders support a number of widely used network protocols, ensuring smooth integration with SCADA software, PLCs, and distributed control systems. Christie.cronje@za.yokogawa.com

18.3 GRP enclosures aid migration to wireless instrumentation networking

T

here is increased demand for equipment housings to contain wireless process monitoring equipment in outdoor environments. This is attributed partly to increased use of industrial wireless sensor network (WSN) technology, but mainly to the growing industry awareness that the glass-reinforced polymer (GRP) composite material it uses for all its protective enclosures is electromagnetically transparent. Until recently, process industry take-up of WSN technology has been relatively slow, possibly because competing wireless standards have made systems designers wary of making the wrong choice. However for mainstream industrial process applications, the field has now narrowed to just two standards - WirelessHART and ISA100.11a. Both standards define secure, self-healing wireless mesh technology operating in the 2.4 GHz ISM band, using IEEE 802.15.4 standard radios. ISA100.11a systems use Internet protocols and are designed for multiple wireless communications purposes, while the simpler WirelessHART systems are primarily intended only for use with process instruments; they are also backward compatible with wired HART devices, which are used extensively within the process sector for remote data acquisition. One of the many benefits of GRP composite material is electromagnetic transparency - it produces a wide range of frangible environmental protection cabinets and shelters for radar and instrument landing systems at airports which are designed not to reflect or interfere with

radio signals. The housings are also used extensively for cellular and satellite communications applications, as well as satellite navigation systems; the GRP material causes no measurable loss of received or transmitted RF signals, so the equipment antennas can be contained within the enclosure. However until now, Intertec has not actively promoted the fact that the non-metallic construction of its products is also ideally suited to field-based 2.4 GHz wireless sensor networks, especially for applications where external antennas are inadvisable because of their susceptibility to accidental damage. According to Intertec’s CEO, Martin Hess, “More and more process industries are starting to deploy wireless field instrumentation, although at this stage it’s only for monitoring and diagnostics - I think that it will still be a long time before wireless is used for process control purposes. Having said that, the technology offers huge benefits for companies with large remote data acquisition needs, completely eliminating the cost and inconvenience of cables. We believe that our GRP composite enclosures provide plant engineers with a future-proof path for WSN technology - even if they choose to install cabled instruments today, by selecting the right type of enclosure at the outset they will make it easy to deploy wireless instrumentation whenever they wish, without having to change the entire installation.” A number of customers, as well as manufacturers of wireless process monitoring automation,

have started to evaluate the electromagnetic performance of its GRP-based enclosures for housing field-based WSN equipment. Initial results are very promising: third-party tests involving a WirelessHART gateway and a WirelessHART field device, both with built-in antennas and sited in different rooms, found that when the field device was placed inside a standard Intertec instrumentation enclosure it continued to function properly, with no measurable loss of signal. The tests were conducted using a model from Intertec’s Multibox range, but the same results are likely to be obtained from many of the company’s enclosures that use a similar form of construction, including its popular Diabox range. Both types of enclosure are moulded from hot-pressed GRP. They are optionally available in ATEXcompliant antistatic versions for use in hazardous environments and can also be fitted with an internal layer of polyurethane foam for additional thermal insulation - all of the materials are electromagnetically transparent and have no effect on signal reception or transmission. Many of the leading wireless process monitoring instruments on the market, including a number of pressure, flow and level transmitters, offer the option of local (on-instrument) or remote antennas. However, if the instrument needs to be housed in some form of enclosure to protect it against a harsh environment, this choice will not be available if - as is commonly the case - the enclosure is made from a metal such as steel or aluminium; its RF shielding effect

will necessitate use of a remote externally mounted antenna to secure adequate signal strength. Aside from incurring additional implementation costs, use of an external antenna also involves drilling an extra hole in the enclosure - probably in its top, which is potentially the worst place for leaks - and leaves a delicate structure open to physical impact. Intertec manufactures all its protective enclosures for field instrumentation from proprietary GRP, either in the form of a single layer or a multi-layer composite containing one or more cores of special insulating and/or fire resistant materials. As well as being electromagnetically transparent and an excellent electrical insulator, the material has multiple advantages for plant designers seeking to protect field instrumentation against environmental effects, especially for long lifecycle applications and where harsh media or severe local climatic conditions might be encountered. GRP is inherently inert and immune to damage from most common chemicals and petrochemicals. It has a similar strength to steel, but weighs about four times less, and will not corrode in the presence of salt - which is why it is increasingly becoming the enclosure material of choice for offshore and coastal oil and gas applications. GRP also has low flammability and is selfextinguishing, as well as having a very low thermal conductivity that makes it easier to implement efficient, condensation-free enclosures. info@saex.co.za

18.3 New 868-MHz wireless module with Trusted Wireless 2.0

T

he Trusted Wireless 2.0 range of Radioline wireless communication products has been expanded with an 868-MHz wireless module. This module utilizes the 868-MHz frequency, which is publicly available and license-free in Europe, at a maximum transmission power of 500 mW, facilitating easy communication of I/O signals and serial data. This is particularly useful for outdoor applications such as in water and wastewater management or power supply

networks. The module represents a very simple and reliable solution for non-time-critical applications where signals need to be transmitted over long distances of up to 20 kilometers. A special advantage of this wireless module stems from the adjustable data rate of its wireless interface in the range of 1.2 to 120 kbps, which increases the reception sensitivity. A low data rate can span a significantly longer distance than high data rates. As a result of the individual

New vertical inline pump

adaptation, users can therefore make the optimum settings for their particular application and the required range. The Radioline wireless system’s I/O mapping distributes signals across the system without requiring any prior programming. All it takes is a turn of the knurled knob to assign the inputs and outputs. Each wireless module can be modularly expanded by up to 32 expansion modules. patrickr@phoenixcontact.co.za

he new LPP vertical inline pump is designed for HVAC applications, water supply systems and general industrial use. The pump is suitable for use with clean, thin, non-aggressive and non-explosive liquids. The liquids should not contain solid particles or fibres, which may physically or chemically attack the pump. The LPP range has a maximum 600 m3/h flow rate and a maximum head of 60 m. It operates in a 0.37 – 75 kW power range and in liquid temperatures from 0°C to +90°C.The pump features a low inlet/outlet position for easy installation, a lengthened mechanical seal for better performance and an anti-

corrosion stainless steel shaft with LEO’s patented design. The top pull-out aspect makes maintenance easy and the heightened motor base allows better heat dissipation. Binary and analogue volumetric flow sensors for liquids

T

he robust SBY332 mechatronic flow sensor operates to the principle of spring supported piston. The piston, located in the valve seat in the housing, is lifted by the flowing medium against the spring resistance. With volumetric flow quantities ranging from 15 l/min, 25 l/min, 50 l/min, 100 l/min to 200 l/min, the sensor has a fast response time ≤ 10 ms. The switch points can be preset continuously for easy handling. The sensor is available with a variable R or G process connection and is suitable for pressure ranges up to 25 bar in medium temperatures up to 180°C. For binary signal output the piston position is detected by an inductive sensor. Analogue sensors however detect the position by means of a magnetic-field sensor. The spring resistance forces the piston to return to its original position with decreasing flow. This ensures position-independent installation of the flow sensor preventing backflow. The switch points can be easily set and fixed via a setting screw. The units are maintenance-free and the robust mechanical design ensures use in harsh environments. info.za@ifm.com

18.3 Tool provides insights into where and how manufacturers need to optimise safety to improve plant performance

T

he Safety Maturity Index (SMI) tool is a self-guided assessment that gives manufacturers visibility into the effectiveness of their safety programs and the ability to optimise plant performance. Applicable to any industry, any plant size and any location in the world, the SMI tool helps manufacturers see where they measure in safety culture, compliance and capital. Most importantly, it provides recommendations to

help achieve best-in-class safety performance. The three principal components of a successful safe workplace – culture (behavioural), compliance (procedural) and capital (technical) – are equally critical and interdependent in developing a strong, sustainable safety program. For example, creating and maintaining a robust safety culture but not investing in safety technologies and/or complying with standards lowers a company’s ability to provide

a safe workplace. Likewise, the possibility of risk remains when manufacturers invest in safety technologies but fail to emphasise the importance of safety culture throughout the organisation. Each safety pillar is measureable in the SMI tool using four categories – SMI 1: minimising investment, SMI 2: attaining compliance, SMI 3: cost avoidance and SMI 4: operational excellence. By answering a series of questions,

manufacturers can complete the SMI assessment and determine how they measure in each of the four categories. The report also provides recommendations for improvement, if needed. The benefits of optimising safety through the SMI assessment can result in fewer injuries and fines, as well as improved plant productivity, greater efficiencies and enhanced employee morale. cbuys@ra.rockwell.com

Reducing communication costs for upstream oil & gas applications while ensuring highly reliable monitoring and control

A

nnouncing the release of an enhanced version of the STARDOM™ network-based control system which reduces communication costs and ensures highly reliable monitoring and control. These enhancements meet a variety of needs in upstream oil and gas development and production. STARDOM network-based control systems consist of FCN/FCJ autonomous controllers and either a VDS or FAST/TOOLS SCADA server. FCN/FCJ controllers are ideal for the monitoring of oil and gas field installations, pipelines, and other widely distributed facilities that rely on satellites and other types of communications platforms for the transmission of data. In addition to eliminating communications delays and achieving high quality communications, the companies that operate such facilities are seeking to reduce communications costs by limiting the volume of data that needs to be transmitted. Product Features 1. Unsolicited response support Personnel in central monitoring rooms rely on process data to monitor and control production facilities in the field. As all of the process data are sent to the SCADA server at regular intervals, communications costs are high. To address this and other needs, the FCN/FCJ controllers now support the DNP3*1 unsolicited response function and thus are able to immediately transmit only the most essential data to the SCADA server in the central monitoring room. Without impacting the reliability of monitoring and control, this reduces the amount of data that needs to be transmitted and helps to hold down communication costs. 2. Expanded support of standards for gas well applications

Differential pressure meters are widely used to measure gas flow rates. Depending on the mechanism that is employed to create the pressure difference, a variety of formulas developed by organisations such as the International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO), American Gas Association (AGA), and the Japanese Industrial Standards Committee (JISC) are used to calculate the gas flow rate. With this new STARDOM version, the FCN/FCJ controllers now support certain gas flow rate calculations based on the globally popular ISO5167 standard. The FCN/ FCJ controllers already conform to the standards developed by the American Gas Association (AGA) that have been widely adopted in the Americas. With this added capability, the STARDOM controllers now support a greater variety of gas flow rate control applications. 3. Strengthened security measures

As the use of standard port numbers with a communication protocol leaves SCADA systems more vulnerable to unauthorised access, it is becoming a common security practice to restrict which port numbers can be used. Accordingly, the communications function of its FCN/FCJ controllers have been strengthened to enable the selection of network port numbers based on the Modbus/TCP*2 communication protocol, which is widely used in industrial networks. This functional enhancement makes it possible for users to configure their systems in accordance with their security policies. *1 An open communications protocol ideal for use with facilities that are distributed over a wide geographic area *2 A communication protocol developed by Modicon for use with industrial electronics equipment Christie.cronje@za.yokogawa.com

18.3 Compact indicator with saltwater resistance

R

esistance to salt water and high humidity conditions is not only a critical in the marine industry but all industries with high temperatures and high humidity environments. Plastic housing material The RIA15 loop powered indicator already offered almost all the features that are required in the marine and related industries. These include the German

Lloyd and Ex approvals, a very low voltage drop of ≤ 1V, small dimensions of the field housing, good readability of the display as well as an optional backlight. However, there are very high requirements on the resistance to saltwater in the marine industry. The new plastic housing of the RIA15 fulfills this requirement at a cost-effective price. The new plastic material is corrosion-free, saltwater resistant and weather proof, by what it fits perfectly to all applications where those features are needed. Integrated metal fibers for conductivity Often plastic device housings do not offer Ex approvals, due

to conductivity reasons. The RIA15 with the brand-new plastic material with integrated metal fibers shows an excellent conductivity and due to this dangerous electrostatic charging can be avoided. Thus, the device can be offered with international Ex approvals. Furthermore the metal fibers increase the robustness of the housing compared to other standard plastic materials. Right approvals However, the RIA15 in the plastic housing does not only possess Ex approvals like ATEX, CSA, FM and IECEx. The device can also offer the German Lloyd marine approval and shows an

IP66 protection class. That’s why the indicator is very flexible in application. Furthermore the indicator is SIL interference free and so it also can be used in safety relevant uses. Complete indicator portfolio With the new plastic housing for the loop powered indicator RIA15 Endress+Hauser completes the redesign of its indicator portfolio. Endress+Hauser is able to offer a complete portfolio of state-of-the art indicators with various housing versions, international approvals and all important communication protocols. info@za.endress.com

Many-core control: Easily distribute numerous complex functions in a control system with up to 256 processor cores

M

any-core controllers will play a central role in the future of machine control and in the realisation of Industry 4.0 concepts. To meet the rising requirements of Smart Factories, with their increasingly intelligent machines and production systems, highperformance controllers such as the C6670 industrial server are becoming indispensable. To make effective use of this immense computing performance, however, powerful software support, such as that provided by the TwinCAT 3.1 automation platform, is a necessity. Many-core computers differ from conventional Industrial PCs in their architecture. They feature several processors, also referred to as “packages”, and each is equipped with multiple cores. Their memory architectures also provide a notable difference. One technique, known as NUMA or non-uniform memory access, provides each processor with its own dedicated memory. Beckhoff has implemented this design with its C6670 industrial server featuring two Intel® Xeon® packages, each offering 6, 12, or 18 cores and from 64 to 2,048 GB of RAM. This immense computing power can only be utilised effectively, however, if the performance of each core is fully leveraged by TwinCAT 3.1 software. The flagship control software is capable of mapping the various machine and process workflows – highly suitable for parallelisation and distribution of different tasks as function modules. Easy modularisation and user-friendly diagnostics With TwinCAT, users can implement individual automation tasks in the form of modules. Written in PLC or C++ code, these machine modules are assigned to individual

tasks within the TwinCAT system and executed in user-defined cycles. The tasks can then be simply distributed over the real-time cores. To intelligently define the execution sequence, the individual tasks can be prioritised. Critical for reaching the highest level of system performance, the diagnostic functionality of TwinCAT 3.1 analyses the load of each core individually. Cores can also be assigned exclusively to the TwinCAT runtime process, in which case they are referred to as “isolated” because they do not execute any Microsoft operating system functions along with the TwinCAT real-time system. This makes

it easy to separate Windows processes from real-time processes. Support for up to 256 processor cores Since TwinCAT 3.1 was designed for up to 256 processor cores, it provides a futureproof solution, offering the ability to run automation applications on the complete spectrum of currently available processors. Depending on the amount of computing performance needed, the system designer can configure the appropriate number of cores for the respective real-time applications. kennethm@beckhoff.co.za

18.3 Investing in increased capacity

S

tafsjö, a company in the German Bröer Group, has recently made substantial investments to increase capacity and raise production efficiency. The investment, that amounts to 2,3 M EUR, includes among others two new multi-operation machines, three new assembly and pressure testing lines and a new testing facility for product development and R&D. “Now we have the opportunity to increase our capacity, to be even more flexible

than we are today and above all to meet the increasing demand of our products. This and other investments during the past few years, clearly states that our owner, the German family owned company Bröer Group, truly believe in our strategy and on a long-term ownership”, says Thomas Carlson President/CEO at Stafsjö.The investment in the two new machining centers is only one in a series carried out in the recent years. In 2007 a new multioperation machine were acquired

to machine valves up to DN 1600 and a few years later a new grinding machine were acquired. This year Stafsjö’s research and design department also have expanded and modernized its testing facilities to meet the demand for larger valves and products for the mining industry, Stafsjö’s fastest growing business segment. As part of Stafsjö’s lean strategy, integrated assembly and pressure testing lines are also installed. This is an important element in streamlining and

optimizing the production, according to Thomas Carlson. About the multi-operation machines HC Nexus 6800-II from Mazak is a flexible and modular designed machining centre which will be used to machine valve bodies. It has 180 tool pockets and 12 pallets which gives flexibility, speed and minimal down time. MVC 1600 from Spinner will mainly be used to machine gates. sales@valve.co.za
