anuary saw the launch of VEGA’s latest offering in radar sensors to the market. At a packed presentation at the Roodepoort Country Club customers were introduced to the VEGAPULS 69 by Clemens Hengstler, Product Manager Radar from VEGA Grieshaber KG, Germany. Clemens took guests through the latest innovations of the new technology, stopping to give live demonstrations to prove some of the points he was making. The morning’s presentation ended on a light note, with comedian Mel Miller causing more than a few laughs. Afterwards guests spent the day on the golf course, enjoying the fun of the game before the hard work begins in the year ahead. For nearly 20 years, VEGA has been market leader in the radar level measurement sector. After listening to customers’ needs the Shiltach-based company has researched and developed the VEGAPULS 69, a sensor that takes a big step closer to the ideal of an all-round radar level measuring instrument for bulk solids. The level transmitter operates at a frequency of 79 GHz, which allows a considerably better focussing of the transmitted signal. This is a distinct improvement on the previous model which operated at 26 GHz. In containers and silos with many internal obstructions, this enhanced focussing helps to reduce the influence of background ‘noise’. This means that reliable measurement is also possible even with complex internal structures. New microwave components allow the sensor to detect even the smallest reflected signals. Products such as plastic powders or wood chips, which until recently were very difficult to measure because of their poor reflective properties can now be measured with very high reliability. This considerably extends the application range for radar technology in the bulk solids industry and opens up new application areas as well. With a measuring range of up to 120 metres and an accuracy of +/- 5mm, the sensor has sufficient performance capability even for the out of the ordinary tasks such as level gauging in mine shafts or distance measurement on conveyor systems. Despite its large measuring range, the sensor is also an ideal solution for small hoppers or containers; the different antenna designs enable the optimum solution to meet the application needs. Completely unaffected by dirt and build-up, the innovative lens antenna guarantees maintenance-free operation even in harsh environments. To make setup and commissioning easier, an intelligent App for smartphones has been developed. It allows quick and easy alignment of the sensor on a swivel holder. By entering the vessel height and the distance from the discharge opening, the App automatically calculates the optimum tilt angle. 18.1 Reliable material flow with ultrasound
I
n the beverages section of a supermarket, you will find rows of crates with bottles filled with water, soft drinks, or beer. The choice is not easy. Who would imagine that sensors play a key role when those bottles are filled? The different colors of the glass or PET bottles and the colorful imprints or shiny labels call for the use of ultrasonic sensors, which work regardless of color and material. While scanning ultrasonic sensors measure the time of flight of a sound packet and calculate the resulting distance, thru-beam ultrasonic sensors work with continuous sound and analyze the interruption. The result is extremely fast response times.
Using ultrasonic sensors to count bottles monitors the material flow on a continuous basis.
Ultrasonic Sensors Ensure Reliable Material Flow In the food and beverages industry, speed and cleanliness set the tone. Short cycle times and minimum machine and/or system downtime are vital in this industry, and hygiene requirements must not be ignored either. The strictest regulations and certifications are needed to produce high-quality end products. In bottling plants used in beverage production, incoming and outgoing bottles must be counted continuously, irrespective of material and liquid. To ensure the material flow, individual bottles are detected at the outlet of PET bottle blow molding machines and automatic bottle rinsers. High Level of Chemical Resistance
the UBE1000-18GM40 Series, can be used. Since ultrasonic sensors from Pepperl+Fuchs can identify the most difficult materials, even transparent glass or plastic bottles are detected in a reliable manner. Detecting and counting the bottles at several places in the machine ensures continuous monitoring of the material flow. The entry and exit of the bottles to and from the filler is optimized, and missing bottles in the chain are reliably detected. Reliable detection of bottles using ultrasonic thru-beam sensors is guaranteed in areas with high levels of water vapor. Sheet Metal Off the Roll The material flow must not slow down in other applications either. Take the example of a hydraulic punch, in which the sheet metal needs to be fed continuously. As a general rule, sheet metal is supplied in the form of large rolls. The sheet metal runs from the winding system to the press via a loop. A scanning ultrasonic sensor measures the loop sag to regulate the winding tension and reports when the material ends, so that the press is not damaged. Whether brass or steel sheet, oiled or coated—none of them will interfere with the ultrasonic sensor. The sensor’s sound packets are reflected. The runtime is converted into distance and output in digital form as a switching signal, or in analog form via current or voltage. Container Empty Container empty—a message that can result in an entire production line being shut down immediately. System shutdown and loss of production—a horror for any production manager. Continuous measurement of the level of production or auxiliary materials is one traditional application of ultrasonic sensors. The analog output of a cylindrical M30-design sensor continually provides the level, and a switching output reports—overfilling or container empty— to prevent something worse happening in the event of an emergency. The ultrasonic sensor is present no matter what media is in the tank: dough for a bakery, fruit juice for a filling system, or drilling emulsion as an auxiliary material in materials processing.
The analog output of an ultrasonic sensor provides the level in the tank irrespective of the medium. Ultrasonic thru-beam sensors are ideal for counting bottles at high speed
Passing bottles move too fast to be individually detected by the normal scanning of ultrasonic sensors because the bottles pass the sensor at high speed and often with just a very small gap between two bottles. Ultrasonic thru-beam sensors are perfect for the task of counting bottles. Ultrasound thru-beam sensors with increased chemical resistance are required, since these applications very often involve the use of hot steam and chemicals to clean machines. The IP protection category should therefore be a minimum of IP68/69K. The UBEC300-18GM40 Series from Pepperl+Fuchs is ideal. With this sensor series, the transducer surface is specially protected and sealed by a chemically resistant film. In machine areas not affected by cleaning cycles, standard ultrasonic thru-beam sensors, such as
The Pulse of Automation Ultrasonic sensors in pulse mode or continuous thru-beam mode help to ensure and control the material flow in a reliable manner across a wide variety of applications. Ultrasonic sensors are ideal for these applications due to their rugged yet precise measuring method. Simple parameterization—if the application requires it—links measuring ranges from a few centimeters up to 10 m—and ultrasonic sensors rise from being just a problem solver to the sensor for all applications. It is already generally well-known that ultrasonic sensors are used as a parking assist for cars. In the field of factory automation, these sensors are an often underestimated technology for noncontact object detection. mbracco@za.pepperl-fuchs.com

18.1 Industrial PC: Added value through customised multi-touch Control Panels
T
he successful CP2xxx and CP3xxx series of Panels and Panel PCs offer one of the broadest selections of multi-touch HMI products in the industry. The standard models provide an ideal platform for today’s varied machine operation requirements and, building on the standard multi-touch portfolio, advanced custom versions offer operating reliability, ergonomics, and design optimised to suit specific application requirements. Machine manufacturers benefit from the company’s experience of more than 20 years in the development of operator interfaces. Made in Germany, exceptional quality standards are assured for all Beckhoff Control Panels through optimised inhouse production processes, along with low development costs and short development times. The wide range of options found in the Beckhoff range of standard panels with multi-touch functionality as well as the ability to map features in software, streamline the implementation of numerous required functions and electromechanical operator control elements. The demand for customised panel solutions is strong, particularly in the machine building industry. The concept of milling panel housings from solid aluminium, which Beckhoff introduced with their first Control Panel generation as early as 1998, is an ideal basis for individualised housing design. It enables flexible response to customer enquiries, even for small production runs, from simple add-on options right up to fully-
customised housing designs. Although standard, “off the shelf” devices are, as a rule, more economically priced, the additional costs for customised Beckhoff products are modest, as well as offering short development times. Thanks to the wide range of standard devices and components as well as the company’s profound manufacturing expertise, development costs and delivery times remain low. Custom models can also include new components based on customer specifications; however, these are first subjected to stringent fit-for-purpose tests. Moreover, sophisticated additional functions can be integrated in the factory, providing obvious benefits for the customer during installation onsite. Adding to the high quality is the comprehensive hardware expertise that covers all facets of the production at Beckhoff, including in-house development, design, and assembly of the mainboards. Individualised manufacturing – from simple logos to complete housing designs The first step in creating a customised application is a modified appearance, starting with the customer’s logo, which can be easily integrated as a part of the manufacturing process. Depending on the device type, it may also include a modified finish for the whole panel. Close cooperation between the customer and Beckhoff experts offers an excellent route for obtaining an application-specific operator interface in the fastest way possible.
Additional customisations are based on the extensive and modular range of Beckhoff panel components. This enables needs-based integration of various buttons, switches, and circuit boards into an existing standard housing with unchanged dimensions. For example, push-button circuit boards in different shapes can be designed individually, but integrated into several customerspecific devices. This enables a highly modular design for a robust device without errorprone electrical and mechanical interfaces. The market insight of the experts at Beckhoff demonstrates deep understanding that the alternative of extending operator panels by connecting pushbutton modules in a reactive and arbitrary fashion is not industry best-practice. It is far better when users can define the scope of the required operator control elements right
from the start so that the Control Panel solution perfectly fits the application. The ultimate level of customised panel development involves a new housing design, often as a means of implementing a customer’s own design or special ergonomic adaptations. Virtually no limits are imposed on the housing design, colour, or choice of materials. With this popular option, the underlying standard Beckhoff device is often no longer recognisable, although it usually provides the technological foundation for the new device. In addition to the longstanding experience of Beckhoff in Control Panel design, such devices often also benefit from the expertise of industrial designers on the customer’s side, providing an unmatched synergy and, thereby, a vastly superior product. kennethm@beckhoff.co.za

18.1 We have no sea, but we know how to measure salt water
S
alt or seawater contains chemicals that cause different physical and chemical properties in comparison to fresh water. The salinity of seawater has an influence on density, on the different temperatures of freezing and mainly on the corrosion of any constructed object with which it may come into contact. The average salinity of seawater is around 3.5%. This means that each kilogram of seawater contains approximately 35g of dissolved salts, making seawater highly corrosive. Not only does it dissolve the metal ions of different alloys rapidly, seawater also has a negative effect on many other materials used in the manufacture of devices for measuring the of flow of seawater. It is, therefore, critically important to choose suitable materials for sensor linings as well as the electrodes of induction flow meters used for continuous measurement of seawater. This ensures not only that the durability, longevity and functionality is optimal, but economical too.
Instrotech has recently signed-up a new agency, ELIS PLZEN, Czech Republic manufacturer and supplier of FLONET induction flow meters in different dimensions (DN20-DN800), suitable for saline applications. It may be a land-locked country, but that has not deterred ELIS PLZEN dedicating many years of R&D test experience with applications for seawater, to ensure their induction flow meter’s reliability and durability. ELIS PLZEN’s induction flow meters for saline application have sparked interest in the market, and particularly their FLONET model DN700, which was recently dispatched within 3 weeks of order to a client in Greece. ELIS PLZEN expects continued interest in their products for this demanding and growing market segment. sales@instrotech.co.za
Programmability added to compact temperature transmitters
T
he TTM sensor line has been expanded to include dynamic programmability and special features via IO-Link. These fully programmable sensors allow a user to program the temperature range required, rather than be constrained to specific ranges, for more specific temperature control. This new functionality
also allows the sensor to be programmed and used as a temperature switch. The TTM sensor line includes several models, including remotemount transmitters, transmitters with integral Class A RTDs (resistance temperature detector), as well as all stainless steel configurations to meet different
measurement, space and material needs of applications. To eliminate problems associated with conventional transmitter assemblies, all of TURCK’s compact temperature transmitters are factory assembled with an overmolded or welded housing, and come ready for installation. These additions providing customers with a wide variety of options so they can have exactly what their application needs. This new offering provides a solution that is ready to plug in and play out of the box, with no terminal screws or wiring assembly needed. The overmolded remote transmitters are ideal for applications with limited
clearance because they ensure electronics stay out of harm’s way. Remote versions can also be mounted separately from the RTD, for improved temperature readings by isolating the transmitter circuitry from the temperature being measured. The stainless version offers a more robust package without an overmolded housing, ideal for food and beverage applications. Like others in the TTM line, these new sensors feature a 4-20 mA temperature transmitter. The sensors are pre-scaled 0 to 150 degrees Celsius but can easily to programmed to specific temperatures within those ranges with IO-Link. rodneyt@retauto.co.za

18.1 UPS systems ensure continuity of service in industrial applications
N
ew to a range of service sector solutions for industrial environments, is an uninterruptible power supply (UPS) system, which enhances products - from structured cabling systems for data networks, to
control and management of the installation, including trunking and distribution systems. Optimum sizing of power stages, the latest electronic components and thorough testing of each unit, ensure dependability
and safety of the new UPS system. High performance batteries and an efficient charging system have extended battery life by up to 50%.The compact and lightweight modular series is suitable for industrial and commercial applications, ensuring a reliable power supply up to 120 kVA. This flexible system, which is easy to transport, install and maintain, is made up of standard modules that be added to existing configurations, to increase the power supply or backup time. When necessary, power is easily expanded inside the cabinet, without having to reconfigure the installation or UPS. The backup time can be extended either by adding battery trays in the same cabinet, or by adding another cabinet, depending on the power of the UPS and the backup time required. This modular three phase system consists of individual single phase modules which are redundant and self-configuring, to enable power to be increased quickly and safely. Different levels of redundancy are easily obtained to ensure maximum continuity of service at all times. An advantage of a three phase power supply system with single phase loads, is that in the event of a failure of one of the modules, there is no loss of power. Power continues to be distributed over the other modules which are still operational. With this
Production monitoring made simple
I
t is often necessary for production departments to establish the extent of real work performed during a shift or period of time. The fact that a particular motor was running during a certain period does not necessarily mean that work was being done. In this situation the NewCode motor protection and control relay provides the production manager with a clear picture of how a machine was loaded during a specific time. The production manager simply utilises the free software to read the ‘statistic’ page of the NewCode relay that will provide him with the necessary information such as: % time the motor ran on load; % time the motor ran un-loaded; and % time the motor stood idle. These statistics can provide an overall situation awareness with regards to production time utilisation and can go a long way in identifying sources of difficulty. sales@newelec.co.za
system, it is also possible to create redundancy on each individual phase. If one power modules fails, the other modules for this phase take over. In a failure of a UPS that includes several control modules, continuity of service is assured by the automatic distribution of lost power over the other modules. A range of communications accessories has been designed for managing and configuring the UPS, as well as for remote control of the system. These devices include network interfaces for real time control of the UPS and for managing numerous events that include no power, over-loads and by-pass problems. These network interfaces, with a 32-bit processor, do not require any external software. Other accessories include sensors for monitoring ambient temperature and humidity, smoke detectors and fire safety controls, as well as air conditioning fault and intrusion detectors. Communication and supervision software for accessing the operating parameters of the UPS and for carrying out full diagnostics and the configuration of specific functions, is also available. This UPS system also encompasses the Conventional series for a reliable power supply up to 10 kVA and the Line Interactive series, which is a UPS system up to 3 kVA. These systems are suitable for commercial and residential environments. legrand.south-africa@legrand. co.za

Maximum computing capabilities increase intelligence in the Smart Factory
S
mart Factory concepts require more intelligence on machines or the entire production line, placing greater demands on the computing performance of the automation system. More and more functions with ever-shorter cycle times require more powerful centralised control technology. The PC-based control architecture pioneered by Beckhoff is always based on the newest and most powerful IT processors, meaning that the latest generation IT technology will be immediately available for automation applications. In the IT server field, many-core computers are used for particularly complex and demanding computing applications. The new C6670 industrial server generation now makes this technology available for Industry 4.0 applications, too. Hannover Messe is the international trade fair with the most comprehensive portfolio of exhibits for Industry 4.0 applications, spanning the entire value chain in the enterprise from industrial automation to the digital factory. This year’s motto, “Integrated Industry – Join the Network!”, signals that the major challenges of Industry 4.0, such as widely accepted standards for vertical and horizontal communication or data security, can only be mastered by all industrial players joining hands in a shared network. Thus, the ideal way to accomplish this is with an open, PC-based control architecture. To accommodate the rising demands posed by the Smart Factory, with its highly intelligent machines and production systems, Beckhoff is introducing one of the most powerful controllers in the world with its C6670 industrial server. It features 12, 24, or 36 processor cores and 64
to 2,048 GB of RAM, making the C6670 the ideal hardware platform for the “many-core control” concept, through which Beckhoff consistently pursues its centralised control philosophy. This means that not only PLC, Motion Control, robotics, and CNC functions, but also the Condition Monitoring and energy management functions of a Smart Factory are integrated into a single software system and executed on a single CPU. However, this immense computing power can only be utilised effectively if each core’s performance is fully leveraged by the TwinCAT 3.1 automation platform. At the company’s Industry 4.0 Forum, Beckhoff will show in a live
demonstration many innovations available today that enable Industry 4.0 concepts. The entire system is governed by a powerful C6670 many-core computer, which performs not only conventional machine control functions, but also controls a linear eXtended Transport System (XTS) and a robot. Measurement technology and Condition Monitoring functions are also integrated into the system. In addition, Beckhoff will demonstrate secure machine communication to the Cloud, and communication with advanced sensors, such as RFID readers. kennethm@beckhoff.co.za

New ultra-compact output signal conditioner
T
he new Mini MCR-SL-IDS-I-I output signal conditioner with a narrow 6.2 mm design from the Mini Analog product range transmits and electrically isolates 4 to 20 mA signals from the controller to a load in the field, such as I/P converters, control valves or displays. The electrical isolation is between the input, output, and supply. In addition, HART data protocols can be transmitted bidirectionally in order to obtain or transmit additional information from the field device. This allows you to permanently monitor the state of the control valves, for example. The modules can be supplied with a voltage of 19.2 to 30 V DC via the connection terminal blocks or in combination via the DIN rail connector. When supplied via the DIN rail connector, they can also be used on a Termination Carrier. This system cabling solution enables up to 16 output signals to be quickly and smoothly connected to control systems. The narrow design of the MINI Analog signal conditioners means significant space savings and therefore lower costs. Modules with screw or spring-cage connection technology are also available.

New option 4…20mA output for variable area flowmeters with glass measuring tube
W
ith the new option “WIM”, a 4...20mA electrical output signal is now available for the variable area flowmeter VA40. While the flow rate with these glass devices could previously be read only locally, the 4...20mA output option allows for transmission of the measured value for control or evaluation purposes. With VA40 WIM version, the height of the float is converted into an electrical signal via a Hall sensor chain. This signal can be used for a PLC/DCS, or to record the measured value over a certain period with a data logger. Along with each VA40 WIM, the manufacturer supplies the calibration curve, allowing the customer to assign the exact flow value to any current value. VA40 variable area flowmeters are used for the volume flow measurement of liquids or gases. The glass measuring tube enables visual inspection of the medium to evaluate properties such as gas entrainments or colouring. Typical applications include measurement of flushing, purging or inerting gases, heating and cooling circuits, gas measurement in industrial furnaces, or other basic applications in machine
building and process industries, where this purely mechanical measuring principle has proven itself for almost 100 years. All connection variants of the VA40 are also available with the WIM option. With the robust stainless steel taps, the maintenance-free device is mounted directly into the pipeline using flange, screw, clamp or hose connections. An installation in hazardous areas according to ATEX II2G Ex ia IIC T6 Gb and ATEX II2D Ex ia IIIC T85°C Db is possible. Retrofitting the WIM option to existing devices is not possible. i.thushini@krohne.com

Bringing affordable 3D printing technology to engineers worldwide
T
he new version of the RepRapPro Ormerod 3D printer offers extensive versatility and functionality in an easyto-assemble kit of parts. 3D printing enables electronic and mechanical engineers to quickly and easily realise early design concepts by creating fast-turnaround prototypes, potentially saving months in the product design cycle. The RepRapPro Ormerod 2 is a single-colour low-cost 3D printing machine that is a full open-source and self-replicating RepRap and is one of the most versatile 3D printers available: it is easy to expand in functionality, fast to replicate and fast to assemble. All the RepRapPro printers, including previous machines such as the Ormerod and Mendel, are capable of self-replicating their own plastic components. The Ormerod 2 brings several advantages compared to its predecessor, including a much simpler and more integrated assembly with improved instructions and wiring looms for simple plugin connection and no soldering necessary. Other improvements come in the areas of the build bed, the y-carriage design, bed probe, extruder and power supply, as well as better emissions control and software support. For example,
the Ormerod 2 design offers much easier adjustment of the bed level; improved y-axis belt location and retention delivers easier adjustment of belt tension; and a new bed probe now features a four-wire differential device, as well as providing much easier access to the extruder for cleaning purposes. In addition, the power supply is now a 100240V worldwide input power supply and is a dedicated 12V supply, rather than being an adapted supply, and is more compact with its integration into the machine with no trailing wires. EMI emissions have also been reduced, resulting from a fully shielded design that meets the Class A CE mark. Specifications of the Ormerod 2 printer include: build volume and speed of 200 x 200 x 200mm and 1800mm/min, respectively; a deposition rate of 33cm3 per hour; accuracy and layer resolution of 0.1mm and 0.01mm, respectively; and ability to print using either PLA or ABS thermoplastic materials. The open-source software designed to run the machine is fully compatible with the original Ormerod printer and will run on a relatively low powered computer running Windows, Linux/Ubuntu or Mac OS. The RepRapPro Ormerod 2 is
shipped ready for assembly as a kit of parts containing all the required components. The complete kit includes: all printed parts; all hardware, including threaded and smooth rods, screws, nuts, washers, belts and bearings; pre-soldered and programmed electronics; MicroSD card and adapter; heated PCB build surface; motors; nozzle assembly and extruder drive mechanism; 100m of 1.75mm-diameter white PLA filament material (weighing approximately 300g); a 100-240V worldwide input power supply (plugs available for EU, UK, US and Australia); plus open-source software to run the machine including firmware for the electronics. The availability of the second generation Ormerod 3D printing kit and latest in a line of RepRapPro 3D printers demonstrates the significant success of its open source selfreplicating concept. Using this exciting and low-cost 3D printing technology, in conjunction with the free and intuitive DesignSpark Mechanical 3D design software and the library of 3D component models, means that 3D design and rapid prototyping is becoming increasingly available to a much wider universe of designers and mechanical and electronics engineers. This can enable
significant savings in product development cycles and mean much faster time-to-market. Like the first Ormerod, the Ormerod 2 uses the FFF (Fused Filament Fabrication) process, which can build 3D objects in a range of plastics and also in a variety of colours. The process enables the creation of almost any shape that can be modelled on a computer, including some that cannot be produced by traditional manufacturing techniques. 3D printing is fast becoming an essential part of the electronic and mechanical design process. Increasing numbers of companies are beginning to see the benefits of using this technology to create quick-turn-around prototypes and save months in the design cycle. Barriers to adoption in the past have been the cost of hardware and a lack of easy-touse design software for nonCAD specialists. However, when used in conjunction with the free DesignSpark Mechanical 3D modelling software, the Ormerod 2 3D printing kit will enable design engineers around the world to develop sophisticated concepts and products very quickly and inexpensively. tanya.erasmus@rs-components. com

18.1 Struggling to get a reliable level signal in the steam drum?
I
f the water level is too low, overheating of the water wall tubes may cause serious accidents, resulting in downtime, expensive repairs and injury or death to personnel. If the level is too high, boiler water carries over into the superheater or turbine may cause damage resulting in extensive maintenance costs or outages of the turbine or boiler. Controlling the water level requires sophisticated techniques as the level measurement must be accurate and transmitted to the control system. Higher availability with an innovative alternative Integrated guided-wave radar transmitters (Levelflex) are an alternative to dp. These transmitters ensure higher plant availability by offering more leveldetection capabilities, even under harsh conditions. The Levelflex offers the following benefits: • Compact design • Easy installation and operation
• Better reliability measurements and higher performance • Fast response time • Improved control, analysis and communication • Not a simple transmitter but a complete bypass solution (option) Furthermore, the Levelflex is offered as a complete quality bypass solution which reduces your costs by approximately 25% when designing a new plant or modernising it. As the Levelflex guided radar device can also be pre-mounted in the bypass and preconfigured when delivered, you can minimise the loading and mounting costs. At the end, the maintenance of the Levelflex guided radar is practically maintenance-free as it has no mechanical moving parts and therefore reduces your plant’s downtime. Available certificates with the Levelflex are EN1295211:2007 and EN12955-9:2007. The Levelflex M as well as the new Levelflex FMP 54
are TÜV certified according to the two standards EN 12952 and EN 12953. This means that constructor of steam vessels can install the Levelflex in a redundant combination (1oo2 or 2oo3) as a low water level (LWL) or high water level (HWL) protection together with either the Universal Transmitter with Control Function RMA42 or a safety PLC. Differential pressure (dp) level measurement can be tricky Plant personnel are quite familiar with dp transmitters as they have a long operation history. On the other hand, they do have boundaries. The output of a conventional dp transmitter has inaccuracies mainly caused by changes of static pressure and water density in each leg, and in the steam and water inside the drum. Water at high pressures experience density changes, independent of those caused by temperature variations. info@za.endress.com

18.1 New I/O modules for extreme conditions
T
he Axioline F I/O system for signal acquisition in the control cabinet now includes versions with an extended temperature range of -40째C to 70째C. The robust modules with the XC (extreme conditions) extension are based on standard versions. In addition to bus couplers, they also include digital and analog input and output modules as well as a range of function modules. The PCBs used are coated with a special paint which improves their resistance to moisture and corrosive gases. This means that the new XC versions are ideal for use in applications with harsh ambient conditions, such as wind power plants or solar parks in regions with extreme climates. The new XC versions follow in the footsteps of the complete Axioline F I/O system with particularly high immunity to interference up to 8 kV, rapid signal acquisition, and a highly robust design, which means they can handle mechanical loads such as shocks up to 30 g. patrickr@phoenixcontact.co.za

urck is now offering the incremental variant of its QR24 contactless encoder with pulse rates that can be defined by the customer. The user simply sets the number of pulses per revolution between 1 and 5,000 via the Pactware parameterization software. As before, the encoder can also be taught to one of the nine most common preset pulse rates using the Turck teach adapter. The QR24 can thus be used as a universal incremental encoder, which effectively reduces the number of encoder variants that have to be kept in stock and allows more standardization. The right number of encoder pulses can be selected for each
application so that a virtually unlimited range of applications is possible. In spite of the large number of incremental encoders on the market, the number of pulses per revolution is normally fixed by the pulse disk, thus denying the user any flexibility. Unlike the conventional optical encoders, the inductive QR24 also offers the possibility to change the position of the Z track, as well as a burst function, which enables the user to output the absolute angle position of the encoder incrementally. Any reference runs after machine shutdowns thus become unnecessary. rodneyt@retauto.co.za
river assistance and automated working processes increase both machine efficiency and safety when operating mobile machines. Thanks to three-dimensional detection of the machine environment and automated evaluation of scenes and objects, the newly developed O3M151 sensor from ifm electronic opens up a new dimension in sensor technology. Similar to the comfort and safety functions in modern motor vehicles, such as distance sensors, rear view cameras or emergency brakes assist, the new powerful sensor offers automatic object recognition. This makes it possible to record more than 1 000 distance values synchronously and to reliably detect and follow up to 20 objects. This function
can, for example, be used as collision warning. Functions such as minimum, maximum and average distance with free segmentation of the field of view in three dimensions, offer innumerable degrees of freedom in the application. A typical range of up to 35 m is guaranteed. The heart of the new unit is the robust and reliable PMD 3D sensor patented by ifm. Even interference caused by changing environmental conditions such as sunlight, rain or materials with different reflective characteristics does not influence the repeatability of the measured data. The sensor is highly resistant to vibration and shock and meets IP 67 and IP 69K protection requirements. info.za@ifm.com

18.1 Improving pump longevity
M
otor failure in pumping applications can lead to unnecessary costs and loss of productivity, therefore a good electronic motor protection relay, when related to pumps, should always protect against the pump running dry. When a pump operates outside its optimised load characteristics it will eventually fail. One aspect to monitor is load loss that can cause undesirable vibrations and subsequent rapid failure of the pump. The UCR 80 load loss protection relay is an ideal partner in a pump monitoring circuit because the user is able to accurately monitor adverse load loss affects as required. It is also possible to record impellor wear over time by periodic checks on the equipment. This allows the user to decide on the drop in efficiency level at which he plans to replace the impellor. This relay does provide ‘dry run’ protection but can equally be used to measure pump efficiency declines over time. It is equipped with an alarm and main trip output contact and is userfriendly. The UCR 80 provides blocked delivery or loss of prime in pumping applications, prevents conveyors running idle, as well as V-belt slippage. sales@newelec.co.za
Safe data transmission in the field
T
he new push-pull Advance data connectors bring futureproof high-speed cabling directly to the field. Designed for data rates of up to ten Gbps, the connectors are protected against dirt, dust or humidity by means of IP65/IP67 protection. Due to their 360° shielding, they are also immune to electromagnetic interference. The push-pull technology means that users can insert and remove the connectors easily. Nevertheless, a mechanical locking mechanism reliably prevents unintentional release of the connection. The series includes versions for Profinet and Ethernet as well as fiber optic versions for POF, GOF, and PCF fibers. All connectors are designed for conductor cross sections from 26 to 22 AWG. Both the straight and 45° angled versions are suitable for cable diameters up to 9.5 mm. seanh@phoenixcontact.co.za

18.1 Global solutions in oil & gas
T
he Vanstone thermowell design allows for flexible applications at high process requirements and is suitable for both resistance and thermocouple temperature elements. The challenge for most companies is to balance the reduction of costs while increasing efficiency but at the same time ensuring the safety of their employees, equipment and the environment. Furthermore, companies in the Oil & Gas industry are required to maintain constant production, quality or even increase production, while the availability of resources are becoming scarce. Companies often prefer to use their own plant specific standard rather than prescribe to industry standards. Endress+Hauser adheres to various international standards but is also able to customise temperature elements and thermowells to customer specific application. In the Oil & Gas and petrochemical industries, the Vanstone thermowell design is established as a standard. Alternatively, Endress+Hauser together with the customer can design standardised temperature elements and thermowells as well as spare parts for specific customer applications. With these temperature elementss, customer’s stock is reduced by means of standardised components. For the Oil & Gas industry, the temperature elements, MLTTS00, based on a TR88 (modular temperature elements
with neck and threaded connection for installation in an existing thermowell) and the MLTTS01, based on the TR13 (temperature elements with neck, flange and thermowell) as well as new products such as the TMT82, (temperature transmitter with 2 input channels and HART® communications, SID) and the StrongSens can all be standardised for individual customers. As spare parts the MLTWS01 thermowell (manufactured from bar stock) and the known measurement inserts TS111 and TPC100 are used. The Vanstone design In demanding applications such as Oil & Gas and petrochemicals, high process pressures and temperatures in conjunction with large flow rates are common. Therefore the installed thermowells are subjected to high loads. Typically solid thermowells in forged design or with full penetration welded flanges are used. These are very expensive to manufacture, but by using the Vanstone concept enables significant cost reductions. The Vanstone type is a special thermowell concept, whereby the shaft and flange are not connected to each other. A part of the thermowell is formed as a collar, is clamped between two flanges in order to connect the thermowell into the process. Benefits of the TT511 Vanstone thermowell: • The thermowell and flange are
Flange type: Lap joint flange

not connected to each other, therefore they can be handled separately from each other • A stronger or cheaper flange material can be used (as long as it does not come into contact with the process medium) • Reuse of the flange, if the thermowell is replaced • Use of a standard collar flange • Reduced storage space for separate handling • Reduce spare parts holding

18.1 New optical distance sensors
A
nnouncing the launch of SIKO’s new range of optical distance sensors; the LT5000; LA60 and LA170, whose technical specifications, like linearity and resolution, are comparable with those of wire-actuated transducers. Which is why SIKO has decided to integrate these new sensors into their existing LinearLine product range. As technology and handling of the optical distance sensors are different from the wire-actuated transducers, SIKO foresees the possibilities of using the new sensors for applications where the wire-actuated transducer
can only be used with difficulty or possibly not at all. Although the measuring principle is optical and the casing made of plastic, the standard values in regards to environmental conditions are more than acceptable with a IP67 protection class and a operating temperature of -20°C to +60°C. Applications for the optical distance sensors are: • measuring distances for which SIKO’s SG5 with 600mm wire is too large; • position measuring – eg. for storage/warehouse applications - where wireactuated transducers cannot be used due to mechanical wear resulting from continuous operation, and • for applications where wireactuated transducers, so far,
are only used as a compromis solution, as wire is too difficult to guide. SIKO’S LT5000, for large distances is a laser-based measuring system with transit time technique. This means that a position value can be captured on almost any reflective surface, up to a maximum distance of up to 5000mm. SIKO’s LT5000 is compact in size for measuring distances of up to 5.000 mm, easy to commission and handle and can claim IP67 / IP69K protection class. The LT5000 works in a standard temperature range of between -40°C and +60°C and has a output of 4..20 mA or 0 – 10 VDC. In addition, there is a freely programmable switched output and a highlyvisible laser light spot (laser class
1) for precise alignment and eye protection. SIKO’s LA60 and LA170 for the near zone, feature an optical measuring system with LED, based on the triangulation measuring principle, which means that within a range of 20...80mm – for the LA60 and 30…200mm for the LA170, the reflected beam of light (depending on the angle of irradiation) gives the corresponding position value. The LA60 and LA170 have all of the same features of the LT5000 and have a voltage output of 1 – 10 VDC, plus an additional two adjustable switching points. Accessories and various options of mounting angles and cable connections are available. sales@instrotech.co.za

18.1 Steam jackets for valve bodies Ultra-compact block I/O for company designs, analogue signals Alocal fabricates and tests its steam jackets to ANSI B16.34 - 1998. The steam jackets are designed to keep the valve body at a set temperature. A hot fluid such as steam, is circulated around the valve body keeping the fluid inside both warm and in a liquid state. The steam circulates in the annular space between the jacket and the vessel walls and allows heat to be transferred through the wall of the vessel. Mitech’s hub end Inline Globe Control valve body is used as a base and is modified to incorporate the steam jacket. Flange ends become integral, while the flange drilling incorporates blind tapped holes. All valves are pressure and leak tested before and after jacketing. There are numerous jacketing considerations, including flange
size, full or partial coverage, types and locations of heated medium connections, materials, bonnet jackets or additional heat coverage for specific areas. enquiries@mitech.co.za

T
urck has added several ultracompact Ethernet block I/O devices with four analogue inor outputs to its TBEN-S series. The analogue inputs of the Multiprotocol Ethernet modules can process four different types of input signal: besides voltage and current signals, it also processes PT100 signals from temperature sensors or millivolt signals, as are typically output by thermocouples or measuring bridges. This enables the user to respond flexibly to the particular input signal requirements in the field. The TBEN-S series enables applications that previously required three different block module types to be implemented with just one. The fully potted IP67 modules are slim with a width of only 32 mm and a short length of only
144 mm, and allow assembly directly on the machine. With their extended temperature range from -40 °C to +70 °C degrees, the devices are highly versatile in application. Despite the compact design every TBEN-S module can be operated without additional gateways in each of the three Ethernet systems Profinet, Modbus TCP or EtherNet/IP. Thanks to the Turck Multiprotocol technology used in this series, the devices recognize the protocol in use automatically by listening to communication during the startup phase. An integrated switch allows the use of the devices in a line topology. Besides the versions with four in- or outputs there are also six variants with digital inputs and outputs available. rodneyt@retauto.co.za

Flow/ no-flow detection of granular solids Flow/non flow detection Thanks to the filter function, the solids flow sensor detects only the falling material without interference from conveyor 1 or 2. Flow/no flow and block chute detection The receiver receives microwave beams from the solids flow sensor. When the beam is interrupted, the receiver will output a “blocked chute” signal. The operating distance between the Solids Flow Sensor and Receiver is up to 80 meters (Standard type) but may vary from sensor to sensor and it depends on the installation circumstances.
T
he MWS-DP-3 can also be used as a microwave transmitter in combination with a receiver in order to detect a blocked chute. Screening noise signals These units are equipped with a filter which eliminates unnecessary incoming Doppler signals such as signals from a vibrating pipe or conveyor – this improves the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). Sensitivity margin indicator The receiver unit has indicators for the received power level and the sensitivity set point which allows for easy visual adjustment and maintenance of the sensor. The indicator clearly shows the effect filter screening. Application Example
If the MWS-SR-2receiver is used for this application, its channel function cannot be used.

• Owing to their novel patented coil technology, sensors feature a switching distance that is upto 250% higher than that of conventional inductive sensors with a ferrite core. Make use of this outstanding performance to optimise your applications!
Partial embedding of non-flush sensors
•Non-flush sensors provide unique flexibility due to the integrated predamping protection function. The metal free mounting zones can be significantly reduced compared to conventional sensors with a ferrite core. Depending on the sensor type, upto 4-side embedding in metal at a reduced switching distance is possible.
Factor 1
• The innovative sensors set a new benchmark in metal detection. They are cabable of detecting materials such as iron, stainless steel, copper, aluminium and brass at the same high distance with the highest precision.
High magnetic field immunity
• sensors do not incorporate a ferrite core and are thus not susceptible to strong magnetic fields which occur in electric welding processes or near lifts or electrical furnaces.
A high level of EMC
• sensors not only fulfil the present standard EN50082-2, but also exceed the strict provisions of the EN61000-4-6, which will be an integral part of the proximity switch standard from 2006. sensors are optimally protected against conducted interference.
