Candidate City for the Youth Olimpic Games

Closer to the dream!

On Wednesday February 13th, Medellin was amongst the 3 shortlisted cities to host the 2018 Youth Olympic Games by the International Olympic Committee.

Medellin joins Glasgow and Buenos Aires as the select group of cities that met the strict requirements to host this event at the highest level.

The announcement of the shortlisted cities to host the YOG 2018 means that Medellin may be hosting more than 3,800 young athletes from 204 different countries in

five years time. The news overjoyed the Medellin sports community as they realize how the YOG represents an opportunity for the development and image for the city.

The Medellin 2018 bid is nationwide commitment You can count on the total and absolute support from the national government and myself personally, as we continue to push towards our ultimate goal of being selected as the Host City in July. Medellin is a wonderful city and it has all the attributes necessary to host these Games. All of Colombia is united in support of this effort.

Even when we were going through difficult times, and we aspired to host the 2003 Pan-American Games, the International Olympic Committee said they supported this country, they said the country was moving forward. In 2010, the IOC visited Medellin and they motivated us to keep looking.

Medellin is the perfect fit !

Medellin perfectly fits the philosophy and the reason behind the creation of the Youth Olympic Games, which are different from the Summer Olympic Games in that they don’t focus as much on high marketing budgets, costs, and commercialised sport.

The Youth Olympic Games represent solidarity and fraternal values, and that is why it perfectly fits what Medellin can provide and wants to keep offering the rest of the world.

Medellin can be a source of inspiration for many cities as an example of transforming from a time of difficulty to moving forward and improve the lives of its citizens. This bid and the YOG can continue this development.

This YOG will be another vehicle to move towards higher standards of life, harmony and peace in the community.

Athletic, dynamic and innovative city Creative and Efficient Transportation

Medellin is an example of innovation and efficiency worldwide due to the implementation of creative solutions in mobility, education, technology, and in the use of public spaces for an improved quality of life and coexistence. The capital of Antioquia has been mentioned by governments around the world and international publications for being an example of harnessing its potential, being creative and taking the lead as one of the world’s greatest cities in providing practical solutions to problems.

Medellin: a fit City

The region’s Integrated Transportation System consists of different types of transportation: above ground metro lines, cable car lifts to reach hillside communities, a massive electric bus system (Metroplus), and a tramway that is under construction. Altogether, the system offers an environmentally friendly, easy and safe transportation.

In 2012, the integrated system carried

183,406,105 passengers, representing an estimated half million passengers everyday in a city with a population of 2,393,011 and a Metropolitan area home to 3,592,100. The escalator system in the steep, mountain neighbourhoods reduces the typical commute from 35 to 6 minutes. Additionally, a programme of free bike rentals offers a new form of public transportation system.

City of Events and Investment

More than 25% of Medellin’s population is under 19 years old, and 42% of its practice exercise regularly, with half a million people currently enrolled in activities at INDER (Medellin Institute of Sports and Recreation). In the last ten years, INDER has gone from 280 staff members to 1,873. INDER manages 836 programmes in 18 sport complexes. Medellin also offers dedicated bicycle lanes and the unique ciclovías where three times a week several the city’s main avenues close off for the exclusive use by runners, walkers, cyclists and roller skaters.

TFollowing the recent experience organising the the 2010 South American Games, Medellin emerges as a city with event hosting capacity at the international level. In addition, 8 continental competitions, 10 World cCups, and 5 South American Games sports have been held in Guatapé, the beautiful lake district and home to water sports, further showcasing the organisational dynamism of the region.

Medellin seeks to increase its global competitiveness through business promotion and knowledge development businesses.

Ruta N is part of the 6 clusters that drive the education, entrepreneurship, science, technology and innovation programmes, in the same way that Hewlett Packard has established their Global Services Centre in Medellin. Other important corporations have established themselves at the International Technological Complex and Medellin has become a promoter of new local businesses and as a centre for technology and innovation business trade.

Medellin has over 6,000 hotels rooms, and has experience in hosting numerous visitors for cultural, political, sports and business events. Public officials have developed a cooperative and coordinated network to produce conferences, congress and expositions at the highest standards. The Agency for Cooperation and Investment reported a total of 16 international trade business conferences that drove $448 million, generating an estimated 2,474 new jobs. The Colombian Ministry of Industry, Tourism and Trade expects a foreign direct investment of $1.5 Billion in 2013.

With a population of 2.3 million, the capital of Scotland is the third largest city in the United Kingdom after London and Birmingham. Widely known for its almost permanent cultural festivals like the Comedy Festival, the Jazz Festival, the Celtic Connections, the Film Festival, West End Festival, Merchant City Festival, the Glasgay! Festival and the World Pipe Band Championships, Glasgow ranked ninth in the world in 2012 in the Best Sports City competition by Sport Business Magazine.

Glasgow will host the Commonwealth Games in 2014 with participants from the 54 Commonwealth nations. Between 2013 and 2015 Glasgow will host 5 World Cups. 99% of the required venue infrastructure already exists.

Multiple Olympic medallist and middle-distance runner and British legend, Lord Sebastian Coe is serving as the bid leader. The 1980’s world record holder also served as the head of the London 2012 Organising Committee.

The second largest city in South America with a population of 13 million, Buenos Aires is the most visited place in the southern hemisphere and was ranked in 2012 by the Economist as the most competitive city in Latin America.

Buenos Aires was appointed UNESCO City of Design in 2005 and the World Book Capital in 2011.

The capital of Argentina has the largest concentration of theatres in the world. The Bue-

nos Aires Subte was the first subway system of Ibero-America. Argentina hosted 1978 FIFA World Cup with matches held in the capital’s River Plate and Vélez Sarsfield stadiums. Buenos Aires was one vote away from hosting the 1956 Olympics and has bid several times in the past. In addition to hosting various World Cups, Buenos Aires hosted the 2006 South American Games.

Medellin is ecstatic

Aníbal Gaviria, Mayor of Medellin, Andres Botero, Colombian Minister of Sport; Baltazar Medina, President of the Colombian Olympic Committee, Sergio Fajardo, Governor of Antioquia Region, and Juan Camilo Quintero, CEO of the Medellín 2018 bid, celebrate the city’s success after the announcement of the shortlist to host the 2018 Youth Olympic Games. The IOC report stated that Medellin’s programmes for the athlete experience in culture and education offer “good content with innovative proposals.” The IOC Working Group also confirmed that Medellin’s Project “presents minimal risk to the IOC.”

What’s next for the bid?

At the Atanasio Girardot sports complex, the main concentration of sport venues in Medellin, athletes were celebrating for additional reasons.

It’s possible that some of these children from the INDER sports and recreation schools could represent Colombia in the future in and one of the many sports that will be part of the 2018 Youth Olympic Games in Medellin.

2012 Gold Olympic medalist Mariana Pajón is proud to be the face of Medellin 2018 and represent the bid.

“The city is prepared and the people share the joy for an Olympic dream,” says Juan Camilo Quintero, CEO of the Medellin 2018 bid. Quintero announced that people who will be present during the April 10th videoconference with the IOC are getting prepared to speak about their specific areas. This videoconference is one of the many requirements from the IOC to the bidding cities.
