Ciutat Meridiana An residential area at the North edge of Barcelona. Constructed in the 50s-60s the neighbouhood has been troubled by the monotonous program, poor service and apartments without design. The studio is aiming to mediate the program of the periphery of Barcelona by increasing density.

Strategy Periphery Carparks

By strategically organize car parking at the periphery of the site, the condition of on street parking can be mediated. The car parking structure will be sunken in the landscape to avoid obstruction of views.

The parking can then become new vehicular circulation. Some of existing road that are under use can be then used as pedestrian pathways.

By placing cars at the periphery existing road can be eliminated and used as new public spaces.

Site Observation Redefine Boundary

The site is defined by highways and rails at the Southwest of the site and a natural reservior on the east side of the side. Expanding the current urban area is not feasible.

Boundary and Food

The relationship of city expansion and food production is not a new idea. Since automobile was made available for transporting foods, cities has been expanded in a unpreceded rate. EWASTE, A GLOBAL ISSUE Discarded broken electronic and electrical appliances or ‘e-waste’ has become a global issue in recent years. Not only the significant number of e waste discarded every year (40 million tons) needed immediate response from the society, appropriate means and positive attitudes towards e-waste treatment is urgently needed. Although the Basel Convention had banned the exportation of e waste from developed countries to developing countries since 1990’s, hazardous broken electronics and electrical appliances still arrives countries such as India, China, South Africa and Ghana every year labeled as ‘donations for bridging the technological gap.’

SODOM AND GOMORRAH, ACCRA In Accra e-waste imported from the European Union has been treated by unskilled and unprotected workers in open air. This has worsened the already severe solid waste management condition, especially the Agbobloshie area, imposing immediate hazard to the workers, the inhabitants and the environment. Now the e-waste recycling is taken by the informal sector in Accra and not aid or improvement can be implement for them.

E WASTE ATTITUDE The number of discarded electronics and electrical appliances is not going to decrease in a foreseeable future, positive and responsible attitude should be taken when it comes to e- -waste collection and recycling. E-waste bared its potential by recovering the precious metal content, leading an emerging industry of urban mining. By its abundant labour force, Accra has the potential of turning the accumulating e-waste in the city or even all over the world to valuable products. The E(Waste) School can educated citizens of Accra to participate in the urban mining industry not only for solving the existing urban issues such as pollution, unemployment and lack of infrastructure, but to prepare Ghana for a sustainable development . The architecture of the E (Waste) School will engage students, workers and also people from the neighborhood to understand the recycling process of e-waste. The building of the E(Waste) School will be a sign indicating that by proper means, urban mining can be an prolific industry with minimum environmental impact. A building that is visible and porous for the public can promote the formal recycling of e-waste . Through education and programs that opens to the public a general awareness towards waste treatment and recycling would be seeded in the community. The E (Waste) School is not only a machine for the urban mining industry but an urban device for developments. The environment of Agbobloshie will be improved with the e-waste recycling the process that undergo in the factory. The gradual evolution of the Agbobloshie area through urban mining will demonstrate how Accra evolve from a city troubled by waste issues to a global frontier of recycling industry.

2 Transplastomic Tobacco A transplastomic plant is a genetically modified plant in which the new genes have not been inserted in the nuclear DNA but in the DNA of the chloroplasts.(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transplastomic_plant) The benefit of this process is that the resulted cell can have a higher concerntration of the genome than the orignal plant. The cell would also be less subjected to cell silencing and other cell activities than in the original cell. (http://www.expert-reviews.com/doi/pdf/10.1586/erv.10.95) The plastid transfer between tobacco and C. Reinhardtii chlorplast has already been succeed in 2007. (www.pnas.org/content/104/17/6998.abstract) and tobacco is one of the most suitable medium for ransplastoming and the chance of continemation is 1/100,000,000 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transplastomic_plant) >>

4 Pseudomonas sp. HF-1 Pseudomonas sp. HF-1 is a bacterium that can degrade nicotine content in water by protein and DNA damage. The reaction now is used for bioaugementing the nicotine content of waste water in growing tobacco. The reaction had proved successful in the laboratory environment, with a PCR action , it rapidly removed the nicotine content in waste water. (Degradation of nicotine in tobacco waste extract by newly

Further investigation and development of this bacteria would be needed to successfully removed the nicotine content. Several other attempt in removing or lowering nicotine content in human body had been found in iGEM competitions in recent years. (http://2009.igem.org/Team:Todai-Tokyo)
