Q U O T E S “Julian Hindson’s Pure Shores exhibition of moody coastal paintings is immediately accessible and intriguing” “Strong colours wash across canvases in layers, veiling and revealing distant land across water. Dribbles of paint fall curtain-like from the tops of the frames, creating depth and also instilling a sense of watchful mystery.” “The gallery’s description of ‘distressed abstract’ is quite apt; the canvases are heavily worked, scraped back, reworked and manipulated.” “Several paintings have dark silhouettes of land—presented as simplified, almost symbolic shapes of islands and peninsulas way out, beyond the weather.” “Those that include shots of light through them are particularly satisfying. West Coast Sunset, for example, features gold bands of light running through a predominately sea-green image—and it’s a beautiful effect.” “Atmospherically-charged greens and greys haunt the surface of Mistic (sic)—and honey-coloured dribbles float down the golden and mossy surface of Ascension.” “They’re reasonably priced so the chances are they’ll fly off the walls.” Julian Hindson’s exhibition, Pure Shores, is on at the Morgan Street Gallery in Newmarket, Auckland until Sunday, 4 February 2007. Kath Webster, Auckland View Magazine, January 2007 “There are also additional works to meet the demand, from some of our most popular artists... including Julian Hindson.” “Julian’s iconic scenes of Rangitoto and Piha continue to leave our studio as quickly as we receive them.” Art Bureau, May Newsletter 2007
