CONSTRUCTION SYSTEMS I Prof.: JULIÁN GARCÍA DEGREE: BA in Architecture ACADEMIC YEAR: 2nd LANGUAGE: English PREREQUISITES: Basic knowledge of physics, mathematics and geometry

1- SUBJECT DESCRIPTION Construction Systems I is an introduction to construction. We specifically want students to acquire the following skills: a) Ability to Know and use the appropriate language for construction and architecture; to understand the principles and fundamentals that affect the building; to analyze the different elements present in the building; and B) knowledge of Construction materials, their basic properties and behaviour.


2- OBJECTIVES AND SKILLS (express objectives as learning process outcomes) Skills and learning outcomes that the student acquires are: With regard to skill 1: "To know and be able to design: interior systems division, carpentry, stairs and other finished artwork (T). It is intended that the student achieves a level suitable to demonstrate his knowledge and ability to design systems of internal division, carpentry, stairs and other finished artwork. With regard to skill 2: "To know and be able to design: closing systems, deck and other structural works (T). It is intended that the student achieves a level suitable to demonstrate his knowledge and ability to design systems to enclose, cover and other structural works. With regard to skill 3: “To apply the technical and constructive regulations". It is intended that the student achieves a level suitable to use effectively the technical and constructive regulations in their practical application. With regard to skill 4: "Keep the finished artwork�. It is intended that the student achieves a level suitable to document his knowledge on conservation methods and techniques of the finished artwork. With regard to skill 5: "Keep the structural work." It is intended that students will adequately justify knowledge of conservation methods and techniques of structural works. With regard to skill 6: "Knowing: The conventional building systems and their pathology�. It is intended that the student achieves a level suitable to give detailed evidence of their knowledge of conventional building systems and their pathology. With regard to skill 7: "Knowing: The physical and chemical production processes, pathology and the use of construction materials." It is intended that the student achieves a level suitable to demonstrate his knowledge of the physical and chemical characteristics, production processes, pathology and use of building materials. With regard to skill 8: "Knowing: The industrialized building systems". It is intended that the student achieves a level suitable to demonstrate his knowledge of industrialized building systems to the creation of architecture.

4- METHODOLOGY AND ECTS WEIGHTING The subject consists of 3 ECTS credits to be shared between school hours, which are the responsibility of the teacher, and free work hours, which are the responsibility of the student, as outlined below: School hours: workshops, lectures, seminars and field work. Free work hours: preparation, research, individual and group tutorials, field work. Both school and free work hours are aimed at acquiring the skills that are listed in paragraph 2 of this project. Lectures: Development of the subject, focused on the principles of construction. Workshops: Analysis of the elements and resources in architecture. Seminars / Various: Visits or lectures in accordance with the progress of the course, presentation of a specific work or lecture of a professional guest.

5- EVALUATION SYSTEM 5.1. GENERAL OBSERVATIONS During the semester, the teacher will propose several exercises to be developed by several students individually or in a group. The assessment of each practice will be based not only in the practice itself but also in the work done by students in the preparation of the proposed item. The work will be presented, discussed and debated later in different forums. There will be a final exam on the theoretical contents that are reflected in this educational project. Exempting tests will be considered. The minimum attendance to classes will be 90%. 5.2. EVALUATION AND WEIGHTING CRITERIA The evaluation will be continuous. Assistance will be valued both with exercises and exams. Attendance and positive participation in proposed activities: 10% of the overall evaluation of the material. Exams: 30% of the overall evaluation. Exams will include a majority of short questions or definition of terms, dealing with contents presented in class and / or recommended in the literature. A final exam will be included, as confirmation of the valuation obtained by partial exams. Exercises and practices: 60%. Exercises, either in group or individual, will be distributed during the semester. They might be developed in class or at home.

7- PROFESSOR BIO Julian Garcia, a Building Engineer with a Degree in Arts History, is currently preparing his Phd at the Structures Department of the UPM School of Architecture. Professor at IE University since 2000, he combines teaching and research with practice as a Building Engineer, having developed his professional career in construction companies and engineering studies. He is a member of the Construction History Society, and collaborates with the international work of Rural Development Trust - Fundaci贸n Vincente Ferrer in India. His multidisciplinary research interests include the history of construction, sustainable design and earth architecture. E_mail:
