Landscape photography has evolved quite a bit since the days of Ansel Adams. There was essentially one approach; making traditional, objective images, with as much depth of field and sharp detail as possible. When color photography arrived, blue skies and saturated colors were paramount, resulting in a lot of great work, but also a lot of generic “calendar art” that barely engaged the viewer.

In this issue, we present five of a new breed of landscape artists. They still pay great attention to detail, tones and colors, but they add motion, depth, drama, and emotion to captivate the viewer with new perspectives on the world around us. We know you will enjoy their images.

Frank van Es Actually, I do not make photographs, I negotiate. An environment or ‘place’ has no framing and I negotiate with a place if and how I may frame the place. My arguments are the beauty of the ordinary which can strike, surprise or alienate you. Expressively, emptiness intrigues me and the question is whether I try to capture something or that my photograph is a reaction to my surroundings. My work is mostly about what you do not see. I am a photographer since childhood. My father introduced me into the magical world of photography. We had a complete darkroom and so I did all my B&W processing myself. Nowadays the complete workflow is digital. I am living in Bergen op Zoom in the Netherlands. After a career in the graphics world I switched 12 years ago to media education. I teach several courses in management and media, including photography. Besides my job as a teacher, I am a freelance photographer.

Zoltan Bekefy I started digital photography in 2005, which eventually changed my perception about the world. I have been tirelessly exploring the scenes of nature near and far, and trying to capture those magical moments and transform them into eternal art. Now I am devoting my passion to landscape photography. My photography focuses are grand landscapes of oceans, sky and mountains, as well as fine natural substances. My ultimate goal is to capture the true beauty of nature around us. www.zoltanbekefy.com

Rafael Milani I was born in 1989, in the city of São Paulo, Brazil, and have been experimenting with photography for the last four years. I’m not interested in capturing reality. I like the idea of portraying nameless animals and unknown places, and I think most of my photographs could be well described as “inner landscapes.” Most of my images are created during long walks or car rides, as photography to me is also an excuse to go out, be at places and see things. www.flickr.com/rafaelmilani rafaelmilani.tumblr.com
