STUDIES IN SPAIN
Primary school Structured as three year cycles: First Cycle (6 to 8 years of age) Second Cycle (8 to 10 years of age) Third Cycle (10 to 12 years of age)
Compulsory secondary education It begins at the age of 12 and lasts for four years. It is divided into two cycles, the first for students from age 12 to 14 and the second for students from 14 to 16. Once pupils have satisfactorily finished four years of ESO they receive a Secondary Education Certificate.
Post-Compulsory Schooling- Baccalaureate - Bachillerato This certificate is required to gain university entrance. Some of the courses studied are taken by all students, such as Spanish, a foreign language, Spanish history and physical education. However, students can choose to specialise in one of five different branches: arts, natural and health sciences, sciences and engineering, social sciences or humanities. At the end of their studies they receive the Title of Bachillerato if they have succeeded in all subjects.
The specialist part has up to four subjects (depending on the branch taken). Plastic Arts, Image and Design Performing Arts, Music and Dance Nature and Health Sciences Sciences & Engineering Social Sciences Humanities
Vocational training Students divide their time between school studies and on-the-job training. Students who successfully complete their vocational training are awarded the Technical Certificate in the relevant field. There are two different types of programs: Middle Grade Training Cycles (Ciclos Formativos de Grado Medio), which have the ESO diploma as a requirement, and Superior-level Training Cycles (Ciclos Formativos de grado Superior), which have the Spanish Baccalaureate as the principal requirement.
Higher education and university Bachelor's degrees exist in almost every country in Europe. However, these degrees were only recently introduced in some Continental European countries, where bachelor's degrees were unknown before the Bologna process. Undergraduate programmes in Europe overall lead to the following most widely accepted degrees: BSc.: Bachelor of Science degree (35% – 40% of undergraduate programmes) B.A.: Bachelor of Arts degree (30%- 35% of undergraduate programmes) LL.B.: the Bachelor of Law degree (1% of total programmes, however widely accepted in the law discipline)
Higher education and university Degree classification A degree may be awarded with or without honours, with the class of an honours degree based on a weighted average mark of the assessed work a candidate has completed. The degree classifications are: First class honours (1st) Second class honours, upper division (2:1) Second class honours, lower division (2:2) Third class honours (3rd) Ordinary degree (pass)
