KING EDWARD VI CAMP HILL School for Boys

Welcome Welcome to King Edward VI Camp Hill School for Boys. The original school opened at Camp Hill, close to the city centre, in 1883 and moved to Kings Heath in 1956 because the original site was proving too small for a growing school. Now, Camp Hill Boys shares a beautiful campus on the former Cartland Estate with our sister school and can genuinely claim to be one of the highest achieving and best equipped schools in the country. In recent years, the school has benefited from a new Music Block, Sports Hall, Library, suite of classrooms for English and a Sixth Form study area. We are a relatively small community of 720 boys, who get on well together. The boys are inspired by their excellent, well qualified teachers and are supported by parents, Governors and Old Boys. As a result therefore every year, Camp Hill Boys features prominently in national league tables for examination results and value added statistics which measure the attainment and progress of the boys. However, for most of the boys, most of the time, priorities usually lie elsewhere - in sport, music, drama, chess and the vast range of activities and opportunities available at Camp Hill. These views of the school were supported by Ofsted reports in 2000, 2006 and 2009 which judged the school to be ‘outstanding’. More importantly, the Inspectors found that Camp Hill was committed to go on improving, stating it has a ‘relentless pursuit of excellence in all aspects of the school’s work’.

King Edward VI Camp Hill School for Boys is an outstanding school. It provides a first rate allround education, built on high expectations and standards in all aspects of school life. (OFSTED Report, 2009)

Hopefully, this prospectus and our website will give you a flavour of our school. If you want to know what the boys think, please see the comments made by our leavers (bottom of the pages in this prospectus). Better still come and talk to them at our Open Meetings. Education for able boys should be about challenge and enjoyment. They should feel supported and cared for as they grow up in a community which expects and delivers the highest standards. This is what Camp Hill Boys is all about – come and join us ….. M Roden BSc, NPQH. Headmaster

“I enjoyed every single second of my time at Camp Hill Boys”

Information Boys have a fantastic opportunity to take part in an extensive programme of additional activities in and out of school. (OFSTED Report, 2009)

King Edward VI Camp Hill School for Boys is a selective grammar school forming part of the King Edward Foundation. The King Edward Foundation is responsible for the running of the five grammar schools (all of which converted to academy status on 1 August 2011), two independent schools and the King Edward Sheldon Heath Academy in the City of Birmingham. Camp Hill Boys has been designated as a ‘High Performing Specialist School’. It has three specialisms – Science, Humanities and Applied Learning. It was recognised (for the fourth time) as an ‘outstanding school’ by Ofsted in May 2009. The annual intake is three forms at the age of 11, the vast majority of whom stay to the age of 18. The school selects its pupils on ability and outstanding examination performance has established its reputation as one of the leading schools in the country. A tradition of academic excellence means that nearly all Camp Hill Boys go on to competitive courses at leading universities, including Oxford and Cambridge.

“The school gets the balance right between work and play”

A Broad Curriculum Music and drama are also amongst Camp Hill’s real strengths. Concerts and productions take place in partnership with Camp Hill Girls and an impressive number of boys are selected for Birmingham and National Orchestras. Sport, music and drama all play a major part in the life of Camp Hill Boys. The school’s rugby, cricket, athletics, basketball, swimming and hockey teams play fixtures against the top Midlands schools. Camp Hill also offers cross-country, tennis, fencing, badminton and, for the senior boys, football.

The range of activities on offer is breathtaking. Besides an extensive sporting programme the students also take part in high quality music and drama activities. (OFSTED Report, 2009)

The educational experience at Camp Hill goes far beyond the classroom and the school looks to develop pupils’ confidence through an exciting programme of activities.

“Support for university entrance is simply inspirational !”

A Rich Curriculum Students talk with great enthusiasm about how much they enjoy school. (OFSTED Report, 2009)

Residential weeks, foreign exchanges (to France, Poland and Germany), rugby and hockey tours, outward bound activities and ski trips to Europe are annual events. Art trips to Paris, history trips to the battlefields of France, theatre trips, university visits and work experience both at home and abroad are but a few of the many activities that also enrich the curriculum for Camp Hill Boys. The House System (which celebrated its centenary in 2009) is a strong tradition at Camp Hill and provides further opportunities for all the boys to develop teamwork and leadership skills in an atmosphere of friendly competition.

“I’m proud to say where I go to school. There’s no place like Camp Hill Boys – it’s the best choice you could ever make”

A Caring Environment Camp Hill is a very happy community, proud of the rich social and ethnic mix of the pupil body. The school provides the safe environment boys need to develop their personal and social skills, alongside their academic, sporting and cultural experience. Staff provide support and guidance for boys throughout their lives at Camp Hill, from helping pupils settle into school, right through to university and career choices.

“Teachers really care about students. They are prepared to go the ‘extra mile’ whenever you want them to”
