A VIBRANT CITY ON THE EDGE OF A REGION FULL OF ADVENTURES
Only 90 minutes by plane from Oslo, between the archipelago and the peaks of Børvasstidene, the coastal town of Bodø is a natural communications hub and the perfect base from which to explore the whole Salten region. The town also has gourmet restaurants, a water park, cafés and shopping centres, as well as numerous festivals, including the Nordland Music Festival, with concerts in a beautiful outdoor setting. This is a region where you can get close to natural phenomena. There is considerable contrast – from the sea to tall mountains, from the midnight sun to the northern lights, from white sandy beaches to naked rocks. The area is a scenic eldorado with wild countrysides and a range of famous national parks. Here, you can immerse yourself in magnificent natural surroundings without having to stand in line.
Attractions in Salten range from the Svartisen Glacier in the south, to the Realm of Knut Hamsun in the north. From Norway’s second biggest glacier in Meløy, your journey will take you north via unique overnight accommodations, innumerable hiking trails and mountain peaks, caves, fantastic fishing spots, museums and cultural events, and urban life in one of the country’s quickest growing cities, Bodø. In the Realm of Hamsun in the Hamsun Centre, you can learn all about Nobel Prize winner Knut Hamsun`s life and works, and on Tranøy, you can enjoy open-air art installations against the panoramic backdrop of the Lofoten mountain range. 5
Hamarøy.
Sørfold.
Hamarøy is named the land of the fairy tales because of its magnificent nature that stretches from fjords to mountains. Coast lines, high mountains, and low hills provide a vibrant and inviting landscape. Art and culture is central in Hamarøy, as Knut Hamsun, the world-renowed author still makes a great dedication to the place.
Sørfold is filled with contrasts. Here are dizzying waterfalls, idyllic little villages along the fjord, tradition and innovation. Rago National Park, voted as one of the top 10 in Europe by The Guardian, is located here. Enjoy some peace and quiet in beautiful surroundings.
Steigen.
Gildeskål.
With its wide variety of natural habitats, Steigen is often referred to as the most beautiful natural secret in Nordland. You will see spectacular mountains; views of fjord and sea; an outstanding archipelago with white sandy beaches and azure green waters; and beautiful inland areas with river, fishing and valleys.
Gildeskål is a costal municipality and consists of both mainland and a number of islands. The largests islands are Sandhornøy, Sør-Arnøy, Nord-Arnøy, Fugløya, og Fleinvær. In Gildeskål you will find one of Norways longest sand beaches and some breathtaking mountain formations.
Bodø.
Saltdal.
Bodø is a compact city, which allows you to combine your stay in the city with adventurous natural experiences right outside your doorstep. Enjoy the northern lights or the midnight sun, see the world’s strongest maelstrom – Saltstraumen, hike up one of the 150 peaks surrounding the city, or go fishing on the open sea.
Fauske.
Fauske is a gateaway for transport and trade in inner Salten. Whether you come from the east or the south, the way to Fauske is one of the world’s most beautiful train and bus coaches. The mountains surrounding the Skjerstad fjord makes the trip an experience no matter the season.
6
You will quickly fall in love with Saltdal and the hospitable people living there. The municipality houses Nordland National Park Centre, which is the information centre for the countys many beautiful national parks. Saltdal is frequently visited in connection with both hunting, fishing, berry picking and pure inland nature experiences.
Beiarn. The lush valley within Beiarn is both wild and beautiful, as well as full of experiences and impressions. It is an eldorado for outdoor activities, mountain walking, hunting and fishing. Beiarelva, one of Norways best salmon lakes bends through the green valley of Beiarn.
Meløy. Meløy has an exciting archipelago with 755 small and large islands. Largest is Åmøya, closely followed by Meløya, Bolga, Støtt and Gåsvær - all of them is well worth a visit. Here you will also find Svartisen, Northern Scandinavias biggest glacier, intersect between the high mountain peaks.
Hamarøy
Rødøy.
Rødøy is a municipality in Helgeland. It borders in the north towards Salten, and consists of 1000 islands, islets and sheaves. Rødøy has an amazing costal line, and here you will find one of the classical and most spectacular mountain tops along Helgelandskysten - Rødøyløva.

Activities
Bjørn Godal An eager outdoor person, with a passion for local adventures, Bjørn is the leader of Salten Outdoor Council (Salten Friluftsråd), and is happy to arrange meetings in the great outdoors and to spend the night there when on business trips. 1. What are your insider tips for activities? Island Summit Challenges. Climb peaks on islands, big or small, summer or winter, depending on your inclination and ability. Your reward will be the amazing views. 55 Wicked Walks (55 Forførende Friluftsmål). The cream of outdoor adventures in Salten, picked by locals. Further details available at TellTur.no. Skating on one of the big lakes in Salten, in midwinter. The 47 km long circuit in Steigen which includes Straumfjordvatnet, Storvatnet and Forsanvatnet lakes, is quite unique. Climate change at close quarters: The Engenbreen Glacier. Norway’s lowest-lying glacier is rapidly receding, providing a clear illustration of the changes that are taking place. If you haven’t realised it before, you’ll realise it there. Foraging on the shore. Clean waters and a clean coast offer scope for culinary adventures where you gather the ingredients yourself. Choose
among kelp, wrack, shellfish, crab and sea urchin, and cook them right where you find them. The natural surroundings are your dessert. Enjoy! 2. What’s your favourite thing about Salten? Summer skiing trips in the Svartisen Glacier in the light of the midnight sun. 3. Why should people visit Salten? Extremely easily accessible activities and adventures in a wonderful and varied landscape. Norway’s best known wilderness, Rago, is right by the E6 in Sørfold, while Hamarøy offers what is possibly Norway’s lowest-lying alpine peak, Hamarøyskaftet. And if you want to cycle through magnificent countryside along roads with very little traffic, or paddle along chalk-white beaches with a wealth of bird and animal life, there is plenty of scope in Rødøy, Meløy, Steigen and Hamarøy. When evening falls, you can find your own undisturbed little paradise, and if you’re lucky a moose or reindeer might even come swimming past. 9

The Coastal Cathedral in Bodø Bodø’s new museum attraction towers high above the beach in beautiful, scenic surroundings at Bodøsjøen. This is where the last of the old style wooden cargo vessels was brought ashore in 1954. Now, it has finally been given a home in the form of a modern museum building. Inside stands the old style wooden cargo vessel, the Anna Karoline, complete with mast and rigging, the star of Bodø’s own ship museum.
The voyages of the old style cargo vessels epitomise the story of how coastal folk carried stockfish and other fish products the 1000 km to Bergen, in order to have it exported on world markets. It was an extraordinary voyage, in venerable and incredible vessels. Visitors to the Old Style Cargo Vessel Museum will be invited to experience such a journey, and will be able to see and hear stories, and also take part themselves. Test your strength as the sails are hoisted, or lift yourself up with the help of a variety of pulleys and ropes. You might like to learn how to tie a boson’s knot, or take a look at the collection of boats in the old boathouses.
Bodøsjøen Outdoor Museum surrounds the new Old Style Cargo Vessel Museum. If the weather is on your side, you might like to wander around the grounds and feel the wind in your face. Should it be a bit too chilly or windy though, you can enjoy the sight through the windows of the museum café. There is also a museum shop and an auditorium at the Old Style Cargo Vessel Museum. At weekends and during the peak season, you may experience living coastal culture, handicrafts or historical theatre performances at one of our many events. 33

Mathilde Winther Mathilde is an authentic North-Norwegian whirlwind, and an enthusiastic incomer to Salten. She moved here with her family to Valnesfjord, where they make carrot marmalade, run the grocer’s store called Han Sylte, and will soon be opening overnight accommodations. She is happy to share her favourite things from the Salten region with us.
1. What are your insider food tips? Buy shrimps from boats at the quayside in Bodø and then go out onto the breakwater to eat them. Lunch outdoors at Hanna’s herb garden in Tofte, Misvær, where, you can also try the rich traditional pastries known as møsbrømlefser. Spend the night in one of Astrid og Jesper’s cabins at Manshausen in Steigen and have a meal at their restaurant. 2. What’s your favourite thing about Salten? A refreshing North-Norwegian dip in the sea and then sunbathing on the rocks at Nordvika. Treasure hunting at one of the region’s many second-hand shops (Huset i Svingen in Fauske, Kaleido in Rognan and Fretex in Bodø.)
A day trip to Sjunkhatten National Park, with a rucksack on my back. Walk until my stomach is wet with sweat. Find a rock with a view, get my thermos out and take a break. In winter there are beautiful, prepared ski trails for those who like to go quickly or slowly, on long or short skiing trips. 3. Why should people visit Salten? Salten is an instant experience of Northern Norway, from fjord to mountain peak. It’s easy to get to Bodø Airport, and the short distances within the region (by North Norwegian standards) allow you to travel safely around. Both the urban and the rural are easily accessible, allowing you to find what your heart desires – we welcome you with good food and North Norwegian hospitality. Welcome to Salten! 35

Accommodation
Håvard Lund is a traveller in the service of culture – a composer, musician, and writer. He works as regional musician for the County of Troms, and is familiar with tourism from both sides of the table, in addition to the restaurant and bar business. He is also the initiator of the Arctic Hideaway in Fleinvær. 1. What’s your insider accommodation tips? Skjelstad Art and Culture Centre in Steigen, is a converted barn offering cultural events, good homely fare and dreamlike rooms at mother Lillian’s place, nothing better. Myken B&B – a seasonally open, low threshold gem with creatively presented fun accommodations and very pleasant hosts. Følvika Northern Retreat on Sandhornøy island, a very pleasant and homely concept, close to the finest beach in Salten. Edvarda’s House, Tranøy. One not to miss, but make sure Waldemar is at work! The northbound Hurtigrute liner from Trondheim. Get up at 6 a.m. any time of the year, go out on deck and immerse yourself in the stretch between the Arctic Circle and Bodø. The Arctic Hideaway, Fleinvær, a small hamlet with 10 tiny, archi-
tect-drawn houses on an unspoilt archipelago west of Bodø. You are forced out relentlessly into the natural surroundings, something for which you will be very grateful. 2. What’s your favourite thing about Salten? The beaches in Gildeskål, including the shifting sands on the island of Nord-Fugløy. 3. Why should people visit Salten? Salten is a relatively underdeveloped area to travel in, but this can be turned into something positive. You will be travelling like the locals, avoiding specially adapted short cuts, sluices, tourist traps and other phenomena that occur in places where tourism has been developed. However, the places where developers welcome tourists, are great places to be. Moreover, you will be practically on your own in countryside where the mountains are twice as tall as those in Lofoten, but equally as jagged. Bear in mind also that sundown behind the Lofoten mountain wall can only be seen from here! 43

Rødøyløva (The Rødøy Lion) Rødøy
Degree of Difficulty: Medium, marked path Duration: 4 hours Distance: 7.5 km there and back Highest point: 443 m.a.s.l. Ascent: approx. 450 m Terrain: road with little traffic and then a partly prepared path, steep in parts and rather rocky Parking/start: At the ferry This is one of the classic summit walks in Helgeland. Start at the ferry on Rødøya island. Follow the road towards Klokkargården (the sexton’s residence), a well-known inn offering food and accommodations. Turn right at the junction in Selvågen (approx. 200 m before reaching Klokkargården). There is a clearly marked path about 70 m after the junction. Part of the path has been paved with good, solid steps. When you reach the top of the ridge, simply follow the path to the top. We recommend this route, but you can also follow a path from the north of the island. Both routes run for the most part through open countryside, but there are also some steeper parts. You can get to Rødøy by fast passenger boat or ferry, and you can also spend the night on the island. Fast passenger boat direct from Bodø (Nordlandsekspressen). Daily departures, 3 hour journey.

Ingeborgfossen Saltdal
Degree of Difficulty: Easy, distinct path. Duration: 1 hour Distance: 2 km Highest point: 187 m.a.s.l. Ascent: 150 m Terrain: Rolling countryside, quite steep. Parking/start: Botnvatn Lake Follow the E6 and turn off at the signpost leading to Botn War Cemetery. Drive on for about 3 km until the road stops. Parking is available at the head of Botnvatn Lake, near the suspension bridge. The path takes you over the suspension bridge and has waymarks indicating the direction of the waterfall. Turn off the forest trail about 100 m after the bridge. It’s an easy walk from there across the marshes to the waterfall. Should you wish to continue to the viewpoint overlooking the waterfall, then bear in mind that it is a steep walk that will take about an hour extra. The easiest way to get to Botnvatn Lake is by car or bus. Bus no. 100 goes from Bodø and Fauske to the bus stop at Botn several times a day, and the trip takes about an hour. If you take the bus, the trip will be 6 km longer there and back, but you can count this part of the trip as warming up if you bring your bike along with you on the bus.
Photos: Frank R. Dahl 53
Finnesfjellet Gildeskål
Degree of Difficulty: Medium, partially marked path Duration: 3 hours Distance: 3.5 km there and back Highest point: 506 m.a.s.l. Ascent: approx. 490 m Terrain: Steep mountain terrain Parking/start: Finnes Turn off on the FV 17 road to Storvik. Drive to Finnes and park in the car park just before you reach the first houses. Cross the road and follow the waymarks up the steep slope. Upon reaching Juran, follow the path for about 100-150 metres to Brunen, where you will find a postbox where hikers can write their names. Follow the path up towards the top. When you reach the treeline, the path will disappear. Go north towards the edge and follow the ridge up to the top, Finneskua. Bear in mind that it is steep on the other side. Beware of snowdrifts here in the winter and early spring. The easiest way to get there is by car. The alternative is by bus, in which case, the trip will be 8 km longer, there and back. Bus no. 200 from Bodø/Ørnes will take you to Storvika, and there are several departures daily. You may also take your bike with you on the bus.

Nedre Naver Meløy
Degree of Difficulty: Medium. Duration: 4 hours Distance: 10 km there and back Highest point: 570 m.a.s.l. Ascent: approx. 120 m Terrain: Construction road and path through mountainous countryside Parking/start: By Namnlausvatnet Lake Turn off the Fv 17 Road at Fykanvatnet and drive up Fjellveien Road, along Fykanvatnet Lake, and through the two tunnels to the car park by Namnlausvatnet Lake. Bear in mind that the road surface in the tunnels may be rather uneven, but this should not be a problem if you adjust your speed accordingly. Follow the old construction road west to the western end of Namnlausvatnet Lake. From there you take the path with the red T-markings, proceeding westward towards lower Navervatnet Lake. At Nedre Naver you will find the Rallarbrakka cabin (where there may be a café on certain days during the summer) and the Fykantrappa Stair with its 1100 steps. We recommend taking the same route back, but be sure to have a good look at the Fykantrappa on the way. The view and the stair itself are very impressive. The easiest way to get to Glomfjord is by car, but the bus works, too. Bus no. 200 from Bodø/Ørnes goes to the Fykan tunnel several times a day. It’s about a 4 km walk from the bus stop to the start of the path. You can bring your bike along on the bus, but the road is steep.

Degree of Difficulty: Easy, marked trail Duration: 2 hours 30 mins. Distance: 4.4 km there and back Highest point: 366 m.a.s.l. Ascent: 230 m Terrain: Gravel road and path Parking/Start: The car park by Turisthytta Drive, cycle or take the mountain route up to the Tourist Cabin (Turisthytta), approx. 3.5 km from the city centre. There is a spacious car park there. The path starts at the end of the car park and is clearly marked. The hike can be done as a round trip by descending on the gravel path and crossing over to the Kaiser Trail again on the marked path at Kretjønna pond. On a windy day you can find shelter in the lean-to known as “Kværmannsbu” (Everyone’s hut) at the top of the mountain. This is a great place for a break and there is sheltered seating for several people and a wonderful view overlooking the sea. Using public transport, you can get there by taking bus no. 3 from Bodø city centre to the bus stop at Vollen Nursing Home. The service runs several times a day (except Sundays) and takes about 10 minutes. Buses no. 100, 200 and 300 into Bodø correspond with service 3 at City Nord.

Tuvlia - Seglfjell Beiarn
Degree of Difficulty: Medium, partly marked trail Duration: 6 hours Distance: 8.3 km there and back Highest point: 647 m.a.s.l. Ascent: approx. 640 m Terrain: Path, rolling countryside. Parking/Start: The shop or the school A hike in varied countryside. Start at the school or the Coop shop and follow the Soløyveien road north along the river. The path turns off the road after about 600 metres. The first part is steep, but towards the top it levels out. Follow the marked trail up to its highest point and then turn off towards Mount Seglfjell. It’s easy to find the way. The easiest way to get to Moldjord is by bus or car. Bus no. 300 goes from Bodø to Moldjord on a daily basis and takes about two and a half hours.

Mørsvikvasstinden Sørfold
Degree of Difficulty: Easy, marked path Duration: 2 hours and 30 mins. Distance: 7 km there and back Highest point: 640 m.a.s.l. Ascent: approx. 350 m Terrain: Path and forest trail Parking/start: By Lomtjønna Pond on the E6 If you are arriving from the south on the E6, you can park your car at the car park after passing Lomtjønna pond and completing the ascent to Kråkmofjellet mountain. If you are arriving from the north, the car park is on your left towards the end of a long, straight stretch of road. Follow the marked and signposted path. The summit is visible all the way and there is only a difference of 300 m in altitude from the starting point on the E6, to the top of Mørsvikvasstinden Peak, 640 m.a.s.l. It’s easiest to follow the path, but you can also choose your own route to the top. To begin with it is probably best to go a little north of Lomtjønna pond in order to avoid marshes and undergrowth. The easiest way to get to Mørsvikvasstinden Peak is by car or bus on the E6. Catch bus no. 100 direct from Bodø/Fauske, towards Sortland, to south Kråkmofjell. Two daily departures, morning and afternoon. 3 hour trip.
