A vibrant city on the edge of nature

Welcome to Bodø & Salten. Only 90 minutes by plane from Oslo, between the archipelago and the peaks of Børvasstidene, the coastal town of Bodø is a natural communications hub and the perfect base from which to explore the region. The town also has gourmet restaurants, a water park, cafés and shopping centres, as well as numerous festivals, including the Nordland Music Festival, with concerts in a beautiful outdoor setting. This is a region where you can get close to natural phenomena. There is considerable contrast – from the sea to tall mountains, from the midnight sun to the northern lights, from white sandy beaches to naked rock. The area is a scenic eldorado with wild countryside and a range of famous national parks. Here, you can immerse yourself in magnificent natural surroundings without having to stand in line. Attractions in Salten range from the Svartisen Glacier in the south, to the Realm of Knut Hamsun in the north. From Norway’s
second biggest glacier in Meløy, your journey will take you north via unique overnight accommodations, innumerable hiking trails and mountain peaks, caves, fantastic fishing spots, museums and cultural events, and urban life in one of the country’s quickest growing cities, Bodø. In the Realm of Hamsun in the Hamsun Centre, you can learn all about Nobel Prize winner Knut Hamsun`s life and works, and on Tranøy, you can enjoy open-air art installations against the panoramic backdrop of the Lofoten mountain range. On the following pages, we will present Bodø and surroundings as a destination like no other, and we are more than happy to discuss any questions, suck as possible guest events and experiences or operational and logistical matters, with you or your representatives at any time. Friendly regards, Ann-Kristin Rønning Nilsen Tourist manager Visit Bodø Ann-kristin@visitbodo.com

BODØ & SALTEN - A destination like no other
The city of Bodø offers wondrous arctic experiences, magical scenic surroundings and mouth-watering culinary delights, all right outside our door here in the exotic north. We have the natural resources around us to help create unforgettable adventures. Getting to Bodø is easy and there are several options. You can travel here by air from the north, south, east or west. The airport is located only one kilometre away from the city centre, and is just a ten minutes’ walk. You can also arrive on the northbound or southbound Hurtigruten (the Norwegian Costal Voyage) and continue your journey by water in the beautiful region of Nordland by express boat or ferry. You can drive here along the picturesque Kystriksveien (The Costal Route) which is Norway’s longest National Tourist Route called Helgelandskysten, or arrive by train via the Saltfjellet mountain range where you cross the Arctic Circle. Our own Polar Express has its final stop in Bodø, which is the railway terminal in Northern Norway. We offer a vibrant city on the edge of the great outdoors, with dazzling midnight sun and magical northern lights, music festivals and concerts throughout the year, a lively city centre with restaurants and shops, central berths and memorable excursions.
Here you’ll find some of Norway’s and Europe’s most famous attractions: Experience the world’s strongest maelstrom - Saltstraumen; during a 6-hour period, 372 million cubic metres of seawater pass through a 150 metre wide and 31 metre deep channel, which creates whirlpools up to ten metres in diameter and five metres in depth when the current is at its strongest. A couple of hours drive from Bodø you will find the Svartisen Glacier – Northern Scandinavia’s biggest glacier, underground caves, marble formations, steep peaks and waterfalls, all located in the beautiful National Park. The old Kjerringøy trading post is beautifully located in a stunningly scenic landscape, and is one of Norway’s most important cultural heritage monuments from the 19th century. This living history museum gives you a unique insight into the coastal culture of Northern Norway. Not far from the city centre, you’ll find the Norwegian Aviation Museum. It is Scandinavia’s largest and one of the most modern in Europe. Furthermore, the Salten region is home to the largest colony of European Sea Eagles in the world. The people living north of the Arctic Circle are very friendly and open-minded. You will find it easy to make contact with the locals, especially since language skills in general are very good – English is spoken as a second language everywhere.

Hamarøy.
Steigen.
Sørfold.
Hamarøy is named the land of the fairy tales because of its magnificent nature that stretches from fjords to mountains. Coast lines, high mountains, and low hills provide a vibrant and inviting landscape. Art and culture is central in Hamarøy, as Knut Hamsun, the world-renowed author still makes a great dedication to the place.
With its wide variety of natural habitats, Steigen is often referred to as the most beautiful natural secret in Nordland. You will see spectacular mountains; views of fjord and sea; an outstanding archipelago with white sandy beaches and azure green waters; and beautiful inland areas with river, fishing and valleys.
Sørfold is filled with contrasts. Here are dizzying waterfalls, idyllic little villages along the fjord, tradition and innovation. Rago National Park, voted as one of the top 10 in Europe by The Guardian, is located here. Enjoy some peace and quiet in beautiful surroundings.
Bodø.
Fauske.
Saltdal.

Fauske is a gateaway for transport and trade in inner Salten. Whether you come from the east or the south, the way to Fauske is one of the world’s most beautiful train and bus coaches. The mountains surrounding the Skjerstad fjord makes the trip an experience no matter the season.
You will quickly fall in love with Saltdal and the hospitable people living there. The municipality houses Nordland National Park Centre, which is the information centre for the countys many beautiful national parks. Saltdal is frequently visited in connection with both hunting, fishing, berry picking and pure inland nature experiences.

Gildeskål.
Meløy.
The lush valley within Beiarn is both wild and beautiful, as well as full of experiences and impressions. It is an eldorado for outdoor activities, mountain walking, hunting and fishing. Beiarelva, one of Norways best salmon lakes bends through the green valley of Beiarn.
Gildeskål is a costal municipality and consists of both mainland and a number of islands. The largests islands are Sandhornøy, Sør-Arnøy, Nord-Arnøy, Fugløya, og Fleinvær. In Gildeskål you will find one of Norways longest sand beaches and some breathtaking mountain formations.
Meløy has an exciting archipelago with 755 small and large islands. Largest is Åmøya, closely followed by Meløya, Bolga, Støtt and Gåsvær - all of them is well worth a visit. Here you will also find Svartisen, Northern Scandinavias biggest glacier, intersect between the high mountain peaks.

Experience world renowned architecture; explore a controversial Nobel Prize winning authorship; and the spectacular Norwegian scenery that inspired it. The Hamsun Centre offers a relevant and challenging experience to both Hamsun enthusiasts, nature lovers, architecture fans and other curious visitors. The Hamsun Centre is designed by the American architect Steven Holl. The tall, dark, angular tower is an interpretation of Knut Hamsun and his literary characters. The building was created to resemble a body – a “battleground of invisible forces”. Holl wanted the Hamsun Centre to be like a Hamsun character in architectonic terms, the dark wood being its skin and the staircase its skeleton. The exhibition at the Hamsun Centre represents a journey through the controversial life and works of Knut
Hamsun. The windows and balconies invite you to take in the dramatic landscape that inspired such world-renowned novels as Pan, Growth of the Soil and Wayfarers. An experienced guide will welcome the group and introduce you to the building and our large and exiting exhibition. The café is open, and our guides are always available for questions or discussions. Knut Hamsuns childhood home, Hamsund Knut Hamsun was born as Knud Pedersen in the Gudbrandsdalen district of Norway. Three years later the family moved to Hamarøy in Nordland. Hamarøy became Hamsun’s childhood realm: here he grew up, and here the feeling of home took root – patriotism on a small scale, as he called it.

Nordland Music Festival NOTES Program and tickets available at: www.musikkfestuka.no facebook: musikkfestuka eBillett (app) Stormen Concert Hall
The convergence of culture and nature at Nordland Music Festival is quite unique. The festival is known for concerts in unusual places, like the summit of Mount Keiservarden, out at Nyholms Skandse fort, at Mjelle, Bremnes Fort, Bodø Railway Station and many other venues round about the area. In this way, the Music Festival creates unique musical experiences you will not find anywhere else. Indeed, where else can you pack your rucksack, set off on a walk to the top of Mount Keiservarden, find your seat in the ”hall” and listen to Leif Ove Andsnes, Arve Tellefsen or Kari Bremnes, while looking out across the sea to the isles and skerries and the Lofoten Islands? Where else can you stroll out to Nyholms Skandse at dusk, just before midnight, and listen to catchy music by Mari Boine, Bo Kaspers Orkester or Bigbang, surrounded by cheerful Northerners, while you wave to the Hurtigruten ship as it sneaks by only a few metres away.
Nordland Music Festival was established in Bodø in 1980 under the name of Olsokdagene (The St. Olaf’s Day Festival). It began as a celebration of St. Olaf’s Day. In 1987 the festival took the name of Nordland Music Festival, and is now arranged annually in the second week of August. As of 2013, a winter version of the festival has also been established and will be arranged in March every year – Nordland Winter Music Festival. The festival lasts for three days and is held in collaboration with the Arctic Dialogue conference. Nordland Music Festival is one of the biggest festivals in Norway, and is a music festival with wide-ranging appeal. The programme consists for the most part of classical music in addition to jazz, contemporary music, folk music, musicals, dance, and pop/rock.

The Worlds Strongest Tidal & Experience Centre Welcome to Saltstraumen, home of the world’s most extraordinary natural phenomena. During your drive from Bodø enjoy picturesque landscape towards Saltstraumen, located just 30 minutes outside Bodø. Magic Saltstraumen Experience Centre is located next to the world’s strongest tidal current. The restaurant can seat 100 guests and the film theatre another 100. Champagne receptions with musical entertainment, lunches or dinners are some of the options available on request for groups, but we are also open for the public every day during the summer months and have all the local favorites available on the menu. In Saltstraumen up to 400 million tons of seawater is forcing its way through a 3 km long and 150 m wide strait every six hours. During the strongest currents, whirlpools of up to 32 feet/9.7 m. in diameter and 16 feet/4.9 m. deep are formed. Depending on the time of day, you may witness this phenomenon from the water’s edge or from the bridge that spans the strait. The tidal is at its strongest point approx. every 6 hours.
We offer coffee and waffles, lunch or dinner, depending on your schedule and time of day. Enjoy the beautiful vista from the warm comfort of inside, or outside on one of the many benches. In winter guests can also see the documentary about the Northern Lights. The film examines fascinating myths, history and facts through amazing film footage and images. There is also an underwater photo exhibition in the center, which will give you a visual experience of brightly coloured sea anemone and different fish seen in Saltstraumen. In other words, an exhibition that shows the natural wonders of a unique underwater environment. Around the centre, visitors can wander in the beautiful landscape with 6 km of surfaced nature trails with plenty of places to stop for photos and rest. En route back to Bodø, we recommend a photo stop at Ronvikfjellet viewpoint for an incredible panorama of the city.

Other features of interest. Bodø is the capital of Nordland, and is located strategically by the entrance to the massive Vestfjord, close to the Saltenfjord where we find the world’s strongest tidal maelstrom, and surrounded by beautiful and accessible mountains. Bodø has a population of 52 000, a busy airport, sea and rail terminals, and is a transport hub for much of Nordland and Northern Norway. Military heritage During the 1960s the air base was developed into NATO’s most important air force base in the Northern regions. Jet fighters from Bodø were regularly the first ones to intercept and identify naval vessels and aircraft from the Soviet Northern Fleet as they headed out to the Atlantic. Although now a peaceful city with several colleges and a university, Bodø is mindful of its military heritage as a NATO outpost, and the majority of the Royal Norwegian Air Force’s F-16 jets are still stationed here. Bodø also proudly hosts annual NATO exercises of various sizes, giving citizens and visitors a rare glimpse of activities normally performed at distant locations. The Cold War made its mark on the city of Bodø, with occasional suspicious visits by foreign trawlers bristling with aerial antennae, and with several spy stories worthy of the best LeCarre novel. But also allies from the United States and Canada, England, Germany, the Netherlands and other nations have spent countless weeks in Bodø during extensive NATO exercises, and we would not be surprised to hear that some of your passengers have actually been here before – in uniform, in the service of their country. Nowadays, the relations to nearby Russia are of a friendlier nature, but much of the Cold War history can be viewed at the National Aviation Museum located less than five minutes by bus from the pier. Bodø also hosts one of the two Norwegian Search and Rescue Centres, ambulance aircraft and modern Search and Rescue helicopters on 24/7alert, that are specially equipped and trained for Arctic and all-weather operations. Crews regularly train in the Spitsbergen region. 45
